New types of fish feed based on processed animal proteins (PAPs), insect meal, yeast, and microbial biomasses have been used with success in gilthead sea bream. However, some drawback effects on feed conversion and inflammatory systemic markers were reported in different degrees with PAP- and non-PAP-based feed formulations. Here, we focused on the effects of control and two experimental diets on gut mucosal-adherent microbiota, and how it correlated with host transcriptomics at the local (intestine) and systemic (liver and head kidney) levels. The use of tissue-specific PCR-arrays of 93 genes in total rendered 13, 12, and 9 differentially expressed (DE) genes in the intestine, liver, and head kidney, respectively. Illumina sequencing of gut microbiota yielded a mean of 125,350 reads per sample, assigned to 1,281 operational taxonomic unit (OTUs). Bacterial richness and alpha diversity were lower in fish fed with the PAP diet, and discriminant analysis displayed 135 OTUs driving the separation between groups with 43 taxa correlating with 27 DE genes. The highest expression of intestinal pcna and alpi was achieved in PAP fish with intermediate values in non-PAP, being the pro-inflammatory action of alpi associated with the presence of Psychrobacter piscatorii. The intestinal muc13 gene was down-regulated in non-PAP fish, with this gene being negatively correlated with anaerobic (Chloroflexi and Anoxybacillus) and metal-reducing (Pelosinus and Psychrosinus) bacteria. Other inflammatory markers (igm, il8, tnfα) were up-regulated in PAP fish, positively correlating the intestinal igm gene with the inflammasome activator Escherichia/Shigella, whereas the systemic expression of il8 and tnfα was negatively correlated with the Bacilli class in PAP fish and positively correlated with Paracoccus yeei in non-PAP fish. Overall changes in the expression pattern of il10, galectins (lgals1, lgals8), and toll-like receptors (tlr2, tlr5, tlr9) reinforced the anti-inflammatory profile of fish fed with the non-PAP diet, with these gene markers being associated with a wide range of OTUs. A gut microbiota-liver axis was also established, linking the microbial generation of short chain fatty acids with the fueling of scd1- and elovl6-mediated lipogenesis. In summary, by correlating the microbiome with host gene expression, we offer new insights in the evaluation of fish diets promoting gut and metabolism homeostasis, and ultimately, the health of farmed fish.

Medicine - Abstract
Objectives In Europe, there is a distinction between two different healthcare organisation systems, the tax-based healthcare system (THS) and the social health insurance system (SHI). Our aim was to investigate whether the characteristics, treatment and mortality of older, critically ill patients in the intensive care unit (ICU) differed between THS and SHI.Setting ICUs in 16 European countries.Participants In total, 7817 critically ill older (≥80 years) patients were included in this study, 4941 in THS and 2876 in the SHI systems.Primary and secondary outcomes measures We chose generalised estimation equations with robust standard errors to produce population average adjusted OR (aOR). We adjusted for patient-specific variables, health economic data, including gross domestic product (GDP) and human development index (HDI), and treatment strategies. Results In SHI systems, there were higher rates of frail patients (Clinical Frailty Scale>4; 46% vs 41%; p

Parkinson’s disease (PD) is often associated with a vast list of gait-associated disabilities, for which there is still a limited pharmacological/surgical treatment efficacy. Therefore, alternative approaches have emerged as vibrotactile biofeedback systems (VBS). This review aims to focus on the technologies supporting VBS and identify their effects on improving gait-associated disabilities by verifying how VBS were applied and validated with end-users. It is expected to furnish guidance to researchers looking to enhance the effectiveness of future vibrotactile cueing systems. The use of vibrotactile cues has proved to be relevant and attractive, as positive results have been obtained in patients’ gait performance, suitability in any environment, and easy adherence. There seems to be a preference in developing VBS to mitigate freezing of gait, to improve balance, to overcome the risk of fall, and a prevalent use to apply miniaturized wearable actuators and sensors. Most studies implemented a biofeedback loop able to provide rescue strategies during or after the detection of a gait-associated disability. However, there is a need of more clinical evidence and inclusion of experimental sessions to evaluate if the biofeedback was effectively integrated into the patients’ motor system., This work was supported by FCT national funds, under the national support to R&D units grant, through the reference project UIDB/04436/2020 and UIDP/04436/2020, and under the Reference Scholarship under Grant SFRH/BD/136569/2018.

Bradykinetic, shuffling and shorter steps are prototypical signs of gait in Parkinson’s Disease (PD) and important indicators of Quality of Life (QoL). Advances in wearable technologies enabled their use to objectively evaluate these gait fluctuations complementing the subjective categorical clinical scales usually used by clinicians. This paper aims to study the ability of a wearable gait analysis lab, developed by our team, to serve as a biomarker of PD motor stages and an indicator of patients’ QoL. We accomplished experimental tests which involved repeated measurements of walking trials from a crosssection study with eighteen PD patients and thirteen healthy subjects. We measured gait spatiotemporal parameters and cross these data with commonly PD-scales to assess motor symptoms (UPDRS-III) and quantify patients’ QoL (PDQ39). Patients presented a bradykinetic gait with shorter steps, variability and asymmetry in spatiotemporal parameters. These prototypical signs were also observed along the disease progression considering UPDRS-III and PDQ39 levels. Positive outcomes demonstrated the feasibility and applicability of our objective wearable sensorbased gait analysis in PD to measure typical parkinsonian gait and a (bio)marker of PD motor stages and patients’ quality of life level., This work was supported in part by the FEDER Funds through the COMPETE 2020-Programa Operacional Competitividade e Internacionalizacao (POCI) and P2020 with the Reference Project SmartOs Grant POCI-01-0247-FEDER-039868, and by FCT national funds, under the national support to R&D units grant, through the reference project UIDB/04436/2020 and UIDP/04436/2020, and under the reference scholarship grant SFRH/BD/136569/2018

Solidarity economy-based alternative spaces result from an interface among structural factors, institutional regimes and forms of collective action that mobilise narratives of change, collective identities and non-capitalist economic practices. This book analyses how solidarity economy initiatives develop alternative spatialities as counterpower to mainstream economy. Based on case studies in Europe, Latin America, and Asia, it elaborates on how different scales of solidarity economy-based alternative spaces result from an interface among structural factors, institutional regimes and forms of collective action that mobilise narratives of change, collective identities and non-capitalist economic practices.

Background: Wearable monitoring devices based on inertial sensors have the potential to be used as a quantitative method in clinical practice for continuous assessment of gait disabilities in Parkinson’s disease (PD). Methods: This manuscript introduces a new gait monitoring system adapted to patients with PD, based on a wearable monitoring device. To eliminate inter- and intra-subject variability, the computational method was based on heuristic rules with adaptive thresholds and ranges and a motion compensation strategy. The experimental trials involved repeated measurements of walking trials from two cross-sectional studies: the first study was performed in order to validate the effectiveness of the system against a robust 3D motion analysis with 10 healthy subjects; and the second-one aimed to validate our approach against a well-studied wearable IMU-based system on a hospital environment with 20 patients with PD. Results: The proposed system proved to be efficient (Experiment I: sensitivity = 95,09% and accuracy = 93,64%; Experiment II: sensitivity = 99,53% and accuracy = 97,42%), time-effective (Experiment I: earlies = 13,71 ms and delays = 12,91 ms; Experiment II: earlies = 12,94 ms and delays = 12,71 ms), user and user-motion adaptable and a low computational-load strategy for real-time gait events detection. Further, it was measured the percentage of absolute error classified with a good acceptability (Experiment I: 3,02 ≤ ε%≤12,94; Experiment II: 2,81 ≤ ε%≤13,45). Lastly, regarding the measured gait parameters, it was observed a reflection of the typical levels of motor impairment for the different disease stages. Conclusion: The achieved outcomes enabled to verify that the proposed system can be suitable for gait analysis in the assistance and rehabilitation fields., This work was supported by FCT national funds, under the national support to R&D units grant, through the reference project UIDB/04436/2020 and UIDP/04436/2020, and under the Reference Scholarship under grant SFRH/BD/136569/2018.

The palheiros of the central coast portuguese are an example of integral wood construction. Its origin relates to the need for storage of articles related to fishing and shelter for fishermen during the season. This buildings carry with them the history of fishermen who were looking for new places to fish. Over the years, its functional character of satisfaction of needs is outdated and, at present, the palheiros are holiday houses. Located on the portuguese coast, in different ways, materiality and different ways of building, few are the ones who maintain the original aspect. The still palheiros are an example of an evolutionary process both at the social and construction level. With the economic difficulty of the fishing sector and the emergence of new materials available, wood is no longer the predominant choice. The palheiros are abandoned or replaced, partially or entirely, by construction of other materials. These buildings are subject to the will and taste of the owners, depending on them this type of architecture of our country. Praia da Tocha, a small fishing village belonging to the municipality of Cantanhede, is an example of this diversity of materiality where the vast majority of the original palheiros were destroyed. Some remain until today, however, few are those who are in good condition. The present work especially as to intervene in Palheiro, already altered, integrated in a changing urban environment.

Promoting the articulation between design, artisan and textile art to develop concepts in contemporary fashion, here the focus is on developing joint projects between designers, artists and artisans, using different textile techniques for innovative productions. This approach drew on different types of materials and craft techniques, using these between designer, artists and artisans. Preserving the tradition in the technical execution of each textile piece is fundamental, where the articulation between the artist’s design and the artisan developing a textile/fashion collection from knowledge capable of incorporating innovation. The articulation in the development of new products with design, satisfies different tastes where the culture and identity of certain regions can recover tradition and contribute to cultural dissemination. So, is the dynamics between designer, artist and artisan possible in the development of new products for the textile/fashion area?

The past decades have witnessed big changes in international trade with the rise of global value chains (GVCs). Some countries, such as China, Poland, and Vietnam rode the tide, while other countries, many in the Africa region, faltered. This paper studies the determinants of countries’ GVC participation, based on a panel database of more than 100 countries from 1990 to 2015. Results from a three-pronged empirical approach show that factor endowments, geography, political stability, liberal trade policies, foreign direct investment and domestic industrial capacity are very important in determining GVC participation. These factors matter more for GVC trade than traditional trade.

Scientific and technological advances that are most remarkable in the world where students grow every day demand the definition of educational policies that make it possible to use the potential of digital technologies for the benefit of teaching and learning. Digital technologies allow access to knowledge and learning anytime, anywhere, which implies a shift in the traditional role of teachers, who become enablers of learning through the implementation of teaching strategies that place the student in the center of the educational process. Based on the assumption that the use of digital technologies allows the implementation of new teaching models which contribute to increase the quality of learning, preparing students for the challenges of today's society, the EduLabs project was created based on three assumptions: the availability of technologies to teachers and students; teachers’ training to integrate these technologies into the teaching and learning process; and teachers’ monitoring and follow-up throughout the process of appropriation and innovative integration of the available resources. This research was developed in the School Group of Gafanha da Nazaré, one of the groups where the EduLabs pilot project was implemented. It is a case study of mixed nature, based on the interpretative paradigm that sought to understand the perceptions and practices of the teachers involved in the use of digital technologies in the educational process, to evaluate the impact of the use of these technologies on teaching and learning, and to outline recommendations for the implementation of educational projects integrating digital technologies. For these purposes, data were collected through a variety of techniques and instruments, namely interview, questionnaires to teachers and students, class registration grids, the researcher’s journal and reflective reports from teachers. The results obtained are systematized in this document in seven scientific publications by the researcher and her advisor, who individually seek to respond to each of the defined research objectives. The results highlight positive perceptions of teachers on the impact of the use of digital technologies, both for teaching and learning. At the level of practices, a frequent use is made of the available technological resources, both in classes and in their preparation; however, the unusual implementation of innovative teaching strategies is noticed. The conclusions drawn at the level of perceptions and practices, and consequently at the level of the impact on teaching and learning, allow to define a set of recommendations for the implementation of technological educational projects. At this level, it is important to set effective educational policies that promote the innovative integration of digital technologies. In this sense, in addition to the availability of adequate technological resources, it is necessary to guarantee technical support for their use. However, technology should not be over-valued in relation to pedagogy, which is why it is fundamental to invest in professional teacher development, focusing on both sides. Training should promote the acquisition of technological knowledge of teachers but, above all, should prepare teachers for the use of these resources in practice, in an innovative way, for the benefit of their students' learning. Follow-up, monitoring and continuous assessment of the process of integrating digital technologies into teaching and learning are also extremely important as they allow for adjustments and improvements whenever necessary. This report refers to the six months of internship, between December 2018 and May 2019, in the Clinical Pathology Department (SPC) of Instituto Português de Oncologia de Coimbra Francisco Gentil (IPOCFG), integrated in the Masters of Clinical Analysis of Faculdade de Farmácia da Universidade de Coimbra. Clinical analyses are essential in the hospital routine. The entire course of the samples, from the collection to the final result, always with quality assurance, is fundamental in supporting the diagnosis and monitoring of cancer patient therapy. The simple analysis of a biological product proves to be extremely important when becomes to evaluate the patient’s health status, since the presence of the tumor changes certain analytical parameters. Due to increased frequency of oncological diseases, it is essential to promote the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of these diseases, in wich the IPOCFG has a preponderant role. The four sectors of SPC, Hematology, Biochemistry, Microbiology, Immunology/Hormonology, although structurally separated, work together to achieve the same goal: to obtain reliable results, which allow to infer the health status of the patient, in order to assist the clinician in the diagnosis and institution of therapy. The main goal of this report is to describe the laboratory routine involved in sample processing, given special attention to Microbiology and Immunology/Hormonology, always taking into account that the interpretation of the results obtained in the different sectors should not be performed independently, in order to allow the complete and correct evaluation of the patient.

Freezing of Gait (FOG) is arguably the most disabling motor dysfunction in Parkinson’s Disease (PD), being pharmacological an unfeasible approach in the long-run, which justifies the emergence of non-pharmacological solutions. In fact, patients easily overcome FOG when it is provided a rhythmical temporal information (external cues), favoring a goal-directed gait (biofeedback systems). In this paper, it was intended to assess the tolerability and acceptability of a healthy group towards an augmented reality interface which aims to apply visual cues in temporal synchrony with heel-strike event by an augmented reality glasses. It is intended to be later assessed, the visual cues ability to facilitate motor activity in PD patients. The experimental setup comprised a group of 15 healthy subjects, being those instructed to perform a 30 m straight-walking along an unobstructed walkway, both in the presence of external cues and without any feedback applied. Questionnaires proven visual feedback to be perceived by the users with ease. Users reported interest and curiosity towards the system and proved to be keen to integrate the system into their daily life if they would ever face this disease., Research supported in part by the FEDER Funds through the COMPETE 2020—Programa Operacional Competitividade e Internacionalização (POCI) and P2020 with the Reference Project EMLunder GrantPOCI-01-0247-FEDER-033067 and through the COMPETE 2020—Programa Operacional Competitividade e Internacionalização (POCI)—with the Reference Project under Grant POCI-01-0145-FEDER-006941.

Freezing of Gait (FOG) is one of the most disabling gait disorders in Parkinson’s Disease (PD), for which the efficacy of the medication is reduced, highlighting the use of non-pharmacological solutions. In particular, patients present less difficulties in overcoming FOG when using feedback and especially with Biofeedback Systems. In this study it is intended to detect the frequency threshold and the minimum interval of perception of the vibrotactile feedback, through a proposed wearable system, a waistband. Experimental tests were carried out that considered a temporal, spatial and spatiotemporal context, for which 15 healthy and 15 PD patients participated. It was detected as threshold frequency 180 Hz and for minimum interval of vibration perception 250 ms. The identification of this threshold frequency and this interval will allow us to select the frequency and the minimum interval of vibration to be used in a Vibrotactile Biofeedback Device for patients with PD, in order to help them to overcome FOG., This work was supported by the FCT – Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia - with the reference project UID/EEA/04436/ 2013, by FEDER funds through the COMPETE 2020 – Programa Operacional Competitividade e Internacionalização (POCI) - with the reference project POCI-01-0145-FEDER-006941.

Mathematics must be taught in order to stimulate participation of the students, allowing them to perform significant learning. Mathmagic establish a ludic resource that enables the motivation and development of the students logic. At a first glance, this problems/riddles seem to have something magic, but when the students manage to figure out the mathematic tricks they consider them dynamic challenges. To apply this kind of tasks in a classroom context, it’s important that future teachers develop and consolidate their algebraic reasoning during their academic formation. For that reason, the following question applies: ‘’Do future teachers have algebraic reasoning well consolidated to solve and enforce tasks related with mathmagic in a classroom context?’’. In this aspect, a study has been performed in the University of Trás-os-Montes e Alto Douro, which had the attendance of 52 future teachers from different study cycles and different graduations, using an interpretative and descriptive qualitative research methodology with the use of the case study design. In the first phase, was provided in Google Docs a composed questionnaire survey, by closed questions, with the goal of portray the participants. In the second phase, two mathmagic activities were applied: (a) Think of a number and (b) Symbol Challenge. After reading the answers from the participants, we proceeded with the elaboration of analysis categories that were simplified by the use of the data analysis software SPSS. After the analysis and interpretation of the results, we have concluded that, in the activity (a), only 17,3% of the surveyed managed to solve the activity using the reverse operation concept, while the rest was unable to solve it at all. In the activity (b), only 1,9% of the surveyed used algebraic symbolic to solve the activity, while the rest didn’t come to the solution at all or used concrete examples to come up with the solution. In the final part of this study the activities were described, which were developed in Supervised Teaching Practice, with relation to the domain of Numbers and Operations. This domain, still in arithmetic context, builds the base for the gradual transition to algebra. In many problems its palpable the need for the teachers/educators to have their algebraic reasoning well developed to allow them to help their students/children in achieving their outlined goals.

The continuous monitoring of human gait would allow to more objectively verify the abnormalities that arise from the most common pathologies. Therefore, this manuscript proposes a real-time tool for human gait detection from lower trunk acceleration. The vertical acceleration signal was acquired through an IMU mounted on a waistband, a wearable device. The proposed algorithm was based on a finite state machine (FSM) which includes a set of suitable decision rules and the detection of Heel-Strike (HS), Foot-flat (FF), Toe-off (TO), Mid-Stance (MS) and Heel-strike (HS) events for each leg. Results involved 7 healthy subjects which had to walk 20 m three times with a comfortable speed. The results showed that the proposed algorithm detects in real-time all the mentioned events with a high accuracy and time-effectiveness character. Also, the adaptability of the algorithm has also been verified, being easily adapted to some gait conditions, such as for different speeds and slopes. Further, the developed tool is modular and therefore can easily be integrated in another robotic control system for gait rehabilitation. These findings suggest that the proposed tool is suitable for the real-time gait analysis in real-life activities., FCT -Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia(PEst/UID/CEC/00027/2013)

Parkinson’s Disease is a neurodegenerative disorder for which there is still no cure affecting the non-motor and motor systems. One of the most serious gait disorders are the freezing episodes, denominated by freezing of gait. This paper address the development and validation of a neurofeedback vibrotactile system through a belt for patients with Parkinson’s Disease overcome the freezing episodes, aiming to detect the most perceived frequency. It was verified that the higher frequencies (above 160 Hz) are easily perceived independently of the time interval of vibrotactile feedback., This work is supported by the FCT – Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia - with the reference project UID/EEA/04436/2013, by FEDER funds through the COMPETE 2020 - Programa Operacional Competitividade e Internacionalização (POCI) - with the reference project POCI-01- 0145-FEDER-006941

The Portuguese and European demography of the modern era is developed to the point where we can set standards and find similarities and particularities in various regions. This thesis aims to realize the Serpins parish falls within these standards to the level of marriage practices in the parish. For that were used as sources parish records of marriage and the pastoral visits. Research is between the years 1630 and 1729, thus giving us a view over 100 years, and allowing us to see if changes have occurred over the period.

ABSTRACT To document, why and for what use? How to treat the information gathered? The documentation goes beyond the mere gather of evidence that justify an individual evaluation; from the point of view of the teacher it allows him to be more conscious of the work that he is developing since he obtains interpretative proof on how the children process apprenticeship, and also the meanings that they input to a determined occurrence, therefore allowing for a more conscious evaluation on how to define the future teachings on each situation. From the child's point of view, it allows her to review her work, reflect on it and to question critically without fear of being wrong. The present study aims to portray reflexively the weeks of the practice intervention, and also intends to register the work developed in action-research under the theme of pedagogical documentation, held with the group of children from the kindergarten. After characterizing the group, it was apparent that it presented enough protective factors that made it impossible for problematic situations to occur, and the ones that did, were well resolved by the group and therefore couldn’t be considered for this work. Thus, in conjunction with the institutional supervisor and the cooperating teacher, it was decided that the research-action would be more focused on the professional development of this masters’ degree student. During the course of this work it started to be more evident the identification of what is more relevant to advance in new ways. However, it is safe to say that when it comes to observe the documentation collected over time all the practice its essential, since it is still a the construction tool in the professional development of the student.

Professional services matter for development in East Africa. Business services, including professional services, are among the most dynamic services sectors; and are a key input for other sectors. Greater use of professional services by East African firms is associated with higher labor productivity. But there is a large gap between the potential contribution these services could make and the meager contribution they make today. National markets for professionals and professional services in East Africa remain underdeveloped, whereas regional markets are fragmented by restrictive policies and regulatory heterogeneity. An effective reform agenda will require policy action in four areas: education, regulation of professional services, trade policy, and labor mobility at both the national and international levels.

The intentional and deliberate individuals’ behavior in a declining job satisfaction context has been studied within the behavioral strategies’ phenomenon. Starting from the classical approach, through the EVLN model, the intention is to propose a new reconceptualization in order to enhance the scientific debate concerning the problematic around loyalty and silence. This study also considers the organizational commitment as a behavioral strategies relations antecedent, being job satisfaction a mediator of this relationship. Methodologically, this research is characterized by its hypothetical-deductive component where a quantitative methodology was used via questionnaires. The sample consists of 756 teachers and staff of the Portuguese public higher education. Through structural equation modeling, the conceptual model was tested and was also analyzed the possible presence of mediation effects. The education subsystem and type of career were tested as model moderators. The results showed that organizational commitment is a behavioral strategies’ antecedent. The findings also pointed out the nature and importance of loyalty and the mediating role of silence. The moderation of higher education subsystem and the type of career became clear as the appearance of six different commitment profiles within participants’ respective organizations. For the Management discipline and for the Portuguese public higher education, the behavioral relationships were discussed as a support for Human Resources Management practices. Topics for future research were suggested. N/A
