Background/purpose: Despite progress in inclusive education policies, research has largely neglected the analysis of learning environments that are adjustable for all students. School gardens are learning environments that emphasize the broader view of participation on current perspectives of inclusion. This article discusses the possibilities and limitations of using school gardens in inclusive learning environments and their relations with different inclusive education national policies. Materials/methods: We performed a content analysis of inclusive education national policies and 16 learning activities tested and implemented in four schools from Slovenia, Spain, Greece, and Portugal participating in an exchange project which promoted teaching with school gardens supported by digital tools. Results: The study revealed illustrations of how activities that combine the use of school gardens with digital tools can emphasize collaboration and participation in inclusive learning approaches. However, fostering inclusive practices was found to be either constrained or promoted by each country's view of inclusion in educational policies. Conclusion: Integrating teacher collaboration and project-based learning with garden-based school activities fosters student collaboration and participation, while offering enriched sensorial experiences that benefit the learning and development of all students. School gardens also foster inclusion through deepening intercultural understanding and stronger student interactions that heighten awareness and normalization of diversity.

Designing learning solutions in digitally mediated contexts requires attention to the level of immersion, interactivity, personalization, and engagement promoted, to which the incorporation of active learning methods and gamified strategies can be strategic. However, more research is needed on how teachers use technology-enhanced active learning strategies and on the impact of game-design elements inclusion in learning environments. This study provides findings from the informed exploration stage of a project, consisting of the development and assessment of a digital platform to be used in Portuguese basic and secondary schools to support participation in extracurricular projects and promote its users' sense of belonging. A survey by questionnaire was publicly shared with Portuguese schoolteachers, in June 2022, to map the current technological reality in Portuguese schools and teachers' relationship with technologies. 215 valid responses were analysed with descriptive statistics and content analysis. The use of digital technologies was found not to have decreased after the emergency remote learning period. Teachers assumed that the most used platforms coincided with those institutionally supported and that combining the promotion of active learning methods and the formal recognition of learners' attitudes and skills in a digital solution was something innovative and required in Portuguese schools.

En Portugal, el marco jurídico crea las condiciones para una mayor participación de la comunidad educativa en la promoción de la educación inclusiva. Las medidas de apoyo al aprendizaje y a la inclusión de los alumnos destacan el papel de las estructuras de nivel medio en la promoción de esta participación. En esta línea, las organizaciones internacionales también hacen énfasis en la misma orientación, mostrando un alineamiento político tanto a nivel nacional como transnacional. El estudio sigue la propuesta teórico-metodológica del ciclo político de Stephen Ball. El análisis de los datos siguió el método de análisis temático. En este artículo, demostramos cómo la relevancia de la participación de la comunidad educativa emerge como tema en la educación inclusiva a través del análisis de documentos internacionales/nacionales, así como cómo este tema es interpretado y traducido en el contexto de la práctica por los líderes intermedios a través de entrevistas. Los resultados revelan una falta de articulación entre las políticas abogadas por las organizaciones transnacionales y las prácticas reportadas por coordinadores (líderes intermedios) de Equipos Multidisciplinares de Apoyo a la Educación Inclusiva particularmente en términos de inclusión y participación en el proceso educativo.

ABSTRACT Objectives: to validate the content of a guidance guide on self-care in the postoperative period of breast surgery for breast cancer. Methods: a methodological study with content validity, carried out with 15 expert nurses and physiotherapists, between May and July 2022. Recruitment took place from the Lattes Platform, using snowball sampling. The level of relevance and representativeness for each item was verified using the Content Validity Index (CVI). It was considered valid when CVI was equal to or greater than 78% (0.78). Results: from the initial total of 37 items, two were excluded, as they had insufficient practical relevance and theoretical relevance, and another five items which, although presenting a CVI lower than the established cut-off, were suggested to be rewritten and grouped with other similar items. Conclusions: thirty items were considered valid and demonstrated important and significant characteristics, constituting suitable material for application in clinical practice.

Hepatocellular adenoma is a rare benign liver tumor that occurs predominantly in young women who use exogenous estrogens. We describe a case of a 40-year-old woman on birth control pill who presented with acute right hypochondrial pain and signs of hemodynamical instability triggered by a large bleeding tumor in the right liver lobe. Arterial embolization was performed with cessation of bleeding. To determine etiology, magnetic resonance imaging was conducted with findings suggestive of a hepatocellular adenoma. The tumor was surgically resected, and histologic examination made the definite diagnosis of an inflammatory hepatocellular adenoma. This is a noteworthy case of a rare but potentially fatal complication of liver tumors, whose diagnosis requires a high index of suspicion. Clinicians should consider this diagnosis in young women on oral contraceptive pills who present with severe unexplained abdominal pain and hemodynamical instability. This case aimed to raise awareness of this condition, while reviewing important aspects concerning the management of hepatocellular adenomas.

Objective: to carry out a scoping review with the purpose of mapping the scientific evidence on the use of the neutropenic diet in neutropenic pediatric cancer patients. Source of data: The scoping review protocol was prepared in accordance with the PRISMA-ScR and the checklist before the literature search was performed. Articles on nutritional management in adults or on the treatment of other diseases, and articles that were not in Portuguese or English and published before the year 2000, were excluded. Data were extracted based on the Cochrane Consumer and Communication Review Group form. Summary of the findings: Three hundred and forty scientific articles were identified, with the final sample of this review consisting of nine studies. Although the neutropenic diet has been part of the nutritional management of pediatric cancer patients for more than 20 years, there is still great variation in the criteria for indicating use and starting and discontinuing it, as well as in the nutritional composition of the diet. Furthermore, there is no consensus on the impact of using a neutropenic diet on different clinical and nutritional outcomes. Conclusion: In the absence of guidelines that standardize the use of a neutropenic diet in pediatric patients with neutropenia, there are heterogeneous approaches reported in the literature, even within the same institution. The available literature presents an absence of evidence on the use, viability, and effectiveness of the neutropenic diet in oncological children with neutropenia. More studies are needed to identify the real impact of the neutropenic diet on clinical and nutritional outcomes.

The paper presents an extensive fish sampling dataset spanning a long-term period from 2010 to 2019. The data were collected in Lenta Marina, an upstream area in the Minho Estuary of the NW Iberian Peninsula, which belongs to a LTSER (Long-Term Socio-Ecological Research) platform. To capture fish, fyke nets were utilised as the sampling method and deployed at Lenta Marina. This dataset offers valuable insights into the abundance of each collected taxa recorded over time.The dataset reports a comprehensive compilation of data on the abundance of fish species observed in the area during the sampling period (includes zeroes when a given taxonomic entity was absent in a given sampling event). It provides a detailed record of the abundances of the fish community through time in a frequent sampling regime (on average, sampling was done every 6 days). The dataset shows that the amount of fish from invasive taxa exceeds the count of fish from native taxa in the Minho Estuary.

The alarming increase in antimicrobial resistance in the last decades has prompted the search for alternatives to control infectious diseases. Antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) represent a heterogeneous class of molecules with ample antibacterial, antiviral, and antifungal effects. They can be found in many organisms, including all classes of vertebrates, providing a valuable source of new antimicrobial agents. The unique properties of AMPs make it harder for microbes develop resistance, while their immunomodulatory properties and target diversity reinforce their translational use in multiple diseases, from autoimmune disorders to different types of cancer. The latest years have witnessed a vast number of studies evaluating the use of AMPs in therapy, with many progressing to clinical trials. The present review explores the recent developments in the medicinal properties of cathelicidins, a vast family of AMPs with potent antimicrobial and immunomodulatory effects. Cathelicidins from several organisms have been tested in disease models of viral and bacterial infections, inflammatory diseases, and tumors, with encouraging results. Combining nanomaterials with active, natural antimicrobial peptides, including LL-37 and synthetic analogs like ceragenins, leads to the creation of innovative nanoagents with significant clinical promise. However, there are still important limitations, such as the toxicity of many cathelicidins to healthy host cells and low stability in vivo. The recent advances in nanomaterials and synthetic biology may help overcome the current limitations, enabling the use of cathelicidins in future therapeutics. Furthermore, a better understanding of the mechanisms of cathelicidin action in vivo and their synergy with other host molecules will contribute to the development of safer, highly effective therapies.

hile analysing Las malas (2019) by Camila Sosa Villada, this article looks at the family and its intersection within travesti identities and bodies. By portraying a group of travesti sex workers, Sosa Villada proposes alternative ways of constituting a family by questioning the patriarchal heteronormative structure, a structure marked by sexism, violence, homo and transphobia, and how the travesti community transforms the notion of family by making sisters and mothers out of friends and by adopting an abandoned baby. This adoption, an alternative proposal to heterosexual conception, proves to be the biggest obstacle for this community, apart from violence, prejudice, illness and premature death, given that, for the society that surrounds them, the idea of a travesti adopting a child is inconceivable. Las malas offers groundbreaking ways of creating bonds of affection and kinship beyond the structures defined by blood and the law, while also questioning notions of inheritance and genealogy, suggesting that it is through bonds that exist outside the family that feelings of belonging, sharing, and material and emotional security are experienced, especially when the blood family presents itself as a source of trauma and rejection.

Doxorubicin (DOX) is an anthracycline used to treat a wide range of tumours. Despite its effectiveness, it is associated with a long range of adverse effects, of which cognitive deficits stand out. The present study aimed to assess the neurologic adverse outcome pathways of two clinically relevant cumulative doses of DOX. Adult male CD-1 mice received biweekly intraperitoneal administrations for 3 weeks until reaching cumulative doses of 9 mg/kg (DOX9) or 18 mg/kg (DOX18). Animals were euthanized one week after the last administration, and biomarkers of oxidative stress and brain metabolism were evaluated in the whole brain. Coronal sections of fixed brains were used for specific determinations of the prefrontal cortex (PFC) and hippocampal formation (HF). In the whole brain, DOX18 tended to disrupt the antioxidant defences, affecting glutathione levels and manganese superoxide dismutase expression. Considering the regional analysis, DOX18 increased the volume of all brain areas evaluated, while GFAP-immunoreactive astrocytes decreased in the dentate gyrus (DG) and increased in the CA3 region of HF, both in a dose-dependent manner. Concerning the apoptosis pathway, whereas Bax increased in the DOX9 group, it decreased in the DOX18 group. Only in the latter group did Bcl-2 levels also decrease. While p53 only increased in the CA3 region of the DOX9 group, AIF increased in the PFC and DG of DOX18. Finally, phosphorylation of Tau decreased with the highest DOX dose in DG and CA3, while TNF-α levels increased in CA1 of DOX18. Our results indicate new pathways not yet described that could be responsible for the cognitive impairments observed in treated patients.

This study aimed to evaluate the effects of sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl), chlorhexidine (CHX), and the glycolic extract of propolis (GEP) as endodontic irrigants and of calcium hydroxide [Ca(OH)2], CHX, or Ca(OH)2 + CHX as intracanal medications on the capacity of the lipoteichoic acid (LTA) of Enterococcus faecalis in macrophages’ proinflammatory cytokines production. Freshly extracted 108 human single-rooted teeth were used in this study. The LTA of E. faecalis was standardized in double-distilled pyrogen-free water (250 µg/mL) and inoculated into the specimens subdivided into nine subgroups (n = 12). Cultures of murine macrophages (RAW 264.7) were treated with 30 µL of each sample collected from root canals and incubated (37 °C, 5% CO2) for 24 h. Lastly, anti-TNF-α, anti-IL-6, anti-IP-10, anti-MIP-1α, anti-G-CSF, and anti-IL-1β DuoSet kits were used to perform an ELISA assay. Data were analyzed using one-way ANOVA and Tukey test (p ≥ 0.05). It was found that 1% NaOCl was the most effective irrigant in reducing the capacity of LTA in cytokines production, followed by 12% GEP and 2% CHX, respectively. Ca(OH)2 + CHX presented the best results when associated with NaOCl or GEP. Thus, NaOCl or GEP associated with Ca(OH)2 + CHX were effective in reducing the capacity of LTA in different macrophages pro-inflammatory cytokines production.

Diffusional limitations associated with zeolite microporous systems can be overcome by developing hierarchical zeolites, i.e., materials with a micro- and mesoporous framework. In this work, Y and ZSM-5 zeolites were modified using a surfactant-mediated hydrothermal alkaline method, with NaOH and cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB). For Y zeolite, after a mild acidic pretreatment, the effect of the NaOH+CTAB treatment time was investigated. For ZSM-5 zeolite, different concentrations of the base and acid solutions were tested in the two-step pretreatment preceding the hydrothermal treatment. The properties of the materials were studied with different physical–chemical techniques. Hierarchical Y zeolites were characterized by 3.3–5 nm pores formed during the alkaline treatment through the structure reconstruction around the surfactant aggregates. The effectiveness of the NaOH+CTAB treatment was highly dependent on the duration. For intermediate treatment times (6–12 h), both smaller and larger mesopores were also obtained. Hierarchical ZSM-5 zeolites showed a disordered mesoporosity, mainly resulting from the pretreatment rather than from the subsequent hydrothermal treatment. High mesoporosity was obtained when the concentration of the pretreating base solution was sufficiently high and that of the acid one was not excessive. Hierarchical materials can be obtained for both zeolite structures, but the pretreatment and treatment conditions must be tailored to the starting zeolite and the desired type of mesoporosity.

Proteomics can be a robust tool in protein identification and regulation, allowing the discovery of potential biomarkers. In clinical practice, the management of endometrial cancer can be challenging. Thus, identifying promising markers could be beneficial, helping both in diagnosis and prognostic stratification, even predicting the response to therapy. Therefore, this manuscript systematically reviews the existing evidence of the proteomic profile of human endometrial cancer. The literature search was conducted via Medline (through PubMed) and the Web of Science. The inclusion criteria were clinical, in vitro, and in vivo original studies reporting proteomic analysis using all types of samples to map the human endometrial cancer proteome. A total of 55 publications were included in this review. Most of the articles carried out a proteomic analysis on endometrial tissue, serum and plasma samples, which enabled the identification of several potential diagnostic and prognostic biomarkers. In addition, eight articles were analyzed regarding the identified proteins, where three studies showed a strong correlation, sharing forty-five proteins. This analysis also allowed the identification of the 10 most frequently reported proteins in these studies: EGFR, PGRMC1, CSE1L, MYDGF, STMN1, CASP3 ANXA2, YBX1, ANXA1, and MYH11. Proteomics-based approaches pointed out potential diagnostic and prognostic candidates for endometrial cancer. However, there is a lack of studies exploring novel therapeutic targets.

BackgroundSerological surveys for SARS-CoV-2 were used early in the COVID-19 pandemic to assess epidemiological scenarios. In the municipality of Cascais (Portugal), serological testing combined with a comprehensive socio-demographic, clinical and behavioral questionnaire was offered to residents between May 2020 and beginning of 2021. In this study, we analyze the factors associated with adherence to this municipal initiative, as well as the sociodemographic profile and chronic diseases clinical correlates associated to seropositivity. We aim to contribute with relevant information for future pandemic preparedness efforts.MethodsThis was a cross-sectional study with non-probabilistic sampling. Citizens residing in Cascais Municipality went voluntarily to blood collection centers to participate in the serological survey. The proportion of participants, stratified by socio-demographic variables, was compared to the census proportions to identify the groups with lower levels of adherence to the survey. Univariate and multivariate logistic regression were used to identify socio-demographic, clinical and behavioral factors associated with seropositivity.ResultsFrom May 2020 to February 2021, 19,608 participants (9.2% of the residents of Cascais) were included in the study. Based on the comparison to census data, groups with lower adherence to this survey were men, the youngest and the oldest age groups, individuals with lower levels of education and unemployed/inactive. Significant predictors of a reactive (positive) serological test were younger age, being employed or a student, and living in larger households. Individuals with chronic diseases generally showed lower seroprevalence.ConclusionThe groups with low adherence to this voluntary study, as well as the socio-economic contexts identified as more at risk of viral transmission, may be targeted in future pandemic situations. We also found that the individuals with chronic diseases, perceiving higher risk of serious illness, adopted protective behaviors that limited infection rates, revealing that health education on preventive measures was effective for these patients.

The emergence and rapid spread of the SARS-CoV-2 Gamma variant in Brazil have raised concerns about SARS-CoV-2 vaccines’ neutralizing capacity and viral load impact. Our study aimed to assess the influence of the CoviShield and CoronaVac vaccines on the Ct-N2 value in the healthcare organization’s staff who experienced primary SARS-CoV-2 infection. We examined sixty-three COVID-19 cases reported in the first half of 2021 and identified similar clinical and laboratory characteristics among individuals, regardless of the vaccine they received. Surprisingly, our observations revealed that both CoviShield and CoronaVac vaccines had no impact on viral load or the development and severity of symptoms. These findings suggest a potential reduction in neutralizing response and indicate the need to consider the incorporation of other SARS-CoV-2 vaccines and maintain additional containment measures against SARS-CoV-2, as they remain imperative despite vaccination efforts.

The development of vaccinations has been game-changing in the ongoing effort to combat the COVID-19 pandemic. Until now, adverse effects are being reported at low frequency, including thrombocytopenia and myocarditis. Careful monitoring for any suspicious symptoms and signs following vaccination is necessary. We report a case of hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (HLH) after mRNA COVID-19 vaccine in a 23-year-old female with ulcerative colitis. Diagnosis was made according to HLH-2004 criteria and the patient was treated with dexamethasone with response. Our report aimed to draw attention to the potential relation between COVID-19 vaccines and HLH and the necessity of continued surveillance, especially in at-risk populations such as those with underlying immune dysregulation.

O estudo, tem como objetivo analisar o AM na perspectiva de universitários de uma universidade federal, pertencentes ao curso de Administração, durante a prática de seus estágios. A metodologia classifica o estudo como exploratório, do tipo descritivo-interpretativo e de abordagem mista. A pesquisa ocorreu entre 2019 e 2020 e, do total de 226 alunos em situação regular de estágio, a amostra foi calculada chegando-se a 143 questionários necessários e respondidos. Para a coleta de dados primários, após o pré-teste, foram aplicados questionários online e presencialmente. Já os secundários, foram às resoluções normativas da respectiva universidade federal sobre sua regulação do estágio. A análise dos dados revelou que as condições de estágio são boas para maioria dos participantes, mas houve percepção destes quanto à ocorrência de AM. Em maior grau, foram enfatizadas a realização de tarefas inferiores as suas capacidades, assim como humilhações. E, em menor grau, ofensas verbais, sexuais, religiosas, sociais e políticas, interferência na vida privada e ataques físicos.

Resumo Este artigo teve como objetivo descrever o itinerário terapêutico das trabalhadoras rurais durante a pandemia de covid-19. Realizou-se um estudo qualitativo por meio da metodologia da história oral temática. Foram realizadas 15 entrevistas com trabalhadoras rurais pertencentes ao território da Estratégia da Saúde da Família (ESF) de um distrito municipal do interior de Minas Gerais. As narrativas foram submetidas à análise de conteúdo proposta por Bardin. Os resultados apontaram duas categorias: “Um caminho a percorrer: desvelando o contexto e a organização da ESF no território”; e “Entre medo e (des)atenção à saúde: visibilidade para as trajetórias das trabalhadoras rurais durante a pandemia de covid-19”. Na primeira categoria, revelou-se o itinerário terapêutico das trabalhadoras rurais para a busca de cuidados na ESF do território, bem como a organização do serviço de saúde local. A segunda retratou a intensificação da desatenção à saúde para com as trabalhadoras rurais. Conclui-se que, no itinerário terapêutico das trabalhadoras rurais, a utilização da ESF do território se apresentou como rede preferencial, evidenciando a premência de fortalecimento da APS rural. A pandemia de covid-19 acentuou os dilemas para a busca de cuidados de saúde, revelando a urgência de ações de saúde para esse território.

The stratum corneum (SC) is the skin's outermost layer, organized by clusters of corneocytes among a lipid matrix, acting as a barrier. This “brick and mortar” organization is modified in many skin diseases. We proposed a lesioned-skin model for assessing the permeability of topical formulations and the impact of skin integrity on the permeability of molecules. We anticipate that removal of the SC compromises the skin barrier function, making it more permeable, affecting the biopharmaceutics of topical formulations. By stripping with 25 strips (Corneofix®), the thickness of the SC was considerably reduced, exposing the viable epidermis. Transversal and upper views of the skin by electronic microscopy and histology confirm the removal of the SC. After, we evaluated the permeability of tacrolimus (Protopic®, 0.1 % and 0.03 %) by HPLC-UV. The non-lesioned skin presented 20–25 % of tacrolimus in the SC and no drug permeated through the skin’s inner layers. Contrary, the lesioned-skin model allowed the permeation of tacrolimus to the epidermis, dermis, and also in the receptor medium. These results highlight the importance of using diseased skin tissue as opposed to normal skin when assessing the permeability of pharmaceutical formulations for local topical delivery, closely mimicking the occurred events in clinical scenario.

Introdução: A monitorização terapêutica de medicamentos é descrita como especialidade clínica multidisciplinar que busca aprimorar a assistência prestada ao paciente, devido ao ajuste individualizado na dose de medicamentos. Isso é possível ao combinar conhecimentos de farmacocinética e farmacodinâmica, que permitem avaliar a eficácia e segurança de medicamentos em diversos cenários clínicos. A vancomicina, antibiótico comumente utilizado em infecções, causadas por S. aureus resistente à meticilina, estafilococos coagulase-negativos e enterococos, é um medicamento passível de tal avaliação, que pode ser realizada pela razão da área sob a curva (ASC) em 24h pela concentração mínima inibitória (CIM) do medicamento em relação ao microrganismo. Objetivo: Acompanhar os pacientes elegíveis para o método de avaliação para ASC em que a Vancomicina foi prescrita. Material e Método: Trata-se de um estudo descritivo com atividades de monitoramento séricos (MS) de vancomicina em pacientes, durante o período de junho a dezembro de 2022, realizado no Hospital Sírio Libanês – Brasília. Para a avaliação do modelo de monitoramento (vale – concentração mínima no platô - ou ASC) foram definidos critérios de acordo com a diretriz da ASHP (American Society of Health-System Pharmacists) de 2020, sendo monitoramento por vale indicado para pacientes com IRA (insuficiência renal aguda), em terapia substitutiva renal com HD (hemodiálise) e doente renal crônico (DRC). Para a ASC/MIC, consideram-se elegíveis aqueles com infecções bacterianas em uso de vancomicina com previsão de tratamento > 5 dias e que não estejam no critério de avaliação por vale. As informações foram coletadas das prescrições médicas, evoluções da farmácia clínica, participação de visita e discussão multidisciplinar para avaliação do método aplicável. Resultados: Foram identificadas 193 prescrições com vancomicina, dos quais 186 seguiram com acompanhamento de dosagem sérica do medicamento e 7 não tiveram nenhum tipo de acompanhamento por falha do processo. Dessas, 86 prescrições foram avaliadas por ASC, 100 pelo método de vale. Os pacientes avaliados apenas com o resultado referente a CIM no platô, obtiveram caracterização dos motivos, sendo eles: DRC, IRA e HD, porém um total de 25 foram avaliados por esta metodologia com ausência de motivo objetivo, por falha de processo. Conforme a diretriz da ASHP, a recomendação, principalmente pelo risco de IRA, é o gerenciamento de dosagem por ASC. Discussão e Conclusões: Diante de um antimicrobiano que apresenta potencial toxicidade, além do risco de aumento da resistência bacteriana, se faz necessário o uso de ferramentas para MS. Há espaço para utilização destas técnicas, incluindo o cálculo de ASC, forma mais robusta de MS, elegível para diversos perfis de pacientes e aplicável na prática clínica. Mediante os estudos sobre superioridade no uso de ASC, percebe-se a necessidade do controle sob os pacientes em uso de Vancomicina afim de serem avaliados pelo método padrão ouro até o atual momento.

Objetivo: estimar o nível de conhecimento sobre asma de servidores técnico-administrativos do curso de graduação e pós-graduação em Enfermagem de uma universidade pública em Salvador, Bahia. Método: estudo transversal, realizado com 18 servidores técnico-administrativos de uma universidade pública. A coleta de dados foi realizada mediante envio de e-mail com links do formulário no Google Forms, entre janeiro e maio de 2021. Os dados foram analisados por meio da estatística descritiva com uso do software SPSS, 28.0. Resultados: encontrou-se predominância do sexo feminino 77,8% (n=14), média de idade 42,11±10,98 anos. Verificou-se que 55,6% (n=10) da amostra apresentou conhecimento insatisfatório sobre asma na análise por domínio e pela média de acertos (X±DP=22,6±7,5 acertos). O tratamento da asma foi a temática mais desconhecida pela amostra (X±DP=2,77±1,73 acertos). Background Blood biomarkers are a potential tool for early stroke diagnosis. We aimed to perform a pilot and exploratory study on untargeted blood biomarkers in patients with suspected stroke by using mass spectrometry analysis. Methods and Results This was a prospective observational study of consecutive patients with suspected stroke admitted within 6 hours of last being seen well. Blood samples were collected at admission. Patients were divided into 3 groups: ischemic stroke (IS), intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH), and stroke mimics. Quantitative analysis from mass spectrometry data was performed using a supervised approach. Biomarker‐based prediction models were developed to differentiate IS from ICH and ICH+stroke mimics. Models were built aiming to minimize misidentification of patients with ICH as having IS. We included 90 patients, one‐third within each subgroup. The median age was 71 years (interquartile range, 57–81 years), and 49 participants (54.4%) were women. In quantitative analysis, C3 (complement component 3), ICAM‐2 (intercellular adhesion molecule 2), PLGLA (plasminogen like A), STXBP5 (syntaxin‐binding protein 5), and IGHV3‐64 (immunoglobulin heavy variable 3‐64) were the 5 most significantly dysregulated proteins for both comparisons. Biomarker‐based models showed 88% sensitivity and 89% negative predictive value for differentiating IS from ICH, and 75% sensitivity and 95% negative predictive value for differentiating IS from ICH+stroke mimics. ICAM‐2, STXBP5, PLGLA, C3, and IGHV3‐64 displayed the highest importance score in our models, being the most informative for identifying patients with stroke. Conclusions In this proof‐of‐concept and exploratory study, our biomarker‐based prediction models, including ICAM‐2, STXBP5, PLGLA, C3, and IGHV3‐64, showed 75% to 88% sensitivity for identifying patients with IS, while aiming to minimize misclassification of ICH. Although our methodology provided an internal validation, these results still need validation in other cohorts and with different measurement techniques.

ABSTRACT Studies have shown the synergism of co-inoculation with symbiotic and non-symbiotic N2-fixing bacteria, efficiently contribute to plant development. However, for crops such as forage legumes, data on the use of co-inoculation are still incipient, requiring studies to identify the contribution of this technique for application in pasture areas, thus ensuring greater sustainability. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of co-inoculation of Azospirillum brasilense (Ab-V5) and native rhizobia isolated from two forage legumes, Crotalaria spectabilis and Lupinus albus. Two experiments were installed in pots with 8dm3. Both were conducted in a randomized block design (DBC) with four replications and an 8 x 2 factorial scheme with six bacterial strains and two control treatments without inoculation (with presence or absence of mineral nitrogen), co-inoculated or not with the Ab-V5 strain. Plants were cultivated until the time of flowering when shoot (SDM) and root dry matter (RDM), number (NN) and nodule dry matter (NDM), and relative symbiotic efficiency (RSE) were evaluated. Isolates 05-21 and 06-03, for C. spectabilis and L. albus, respectively, indicated higher potential to promote plant growth when co-inoculated with Ab-V5, showing potential to act as substitutes for nitrogenous chemical fertilizers, reducing costs and increasing the sustainability of production.

Abstract The aims of this study were to perform pre-surgery miRNA profiling of patients who develop Vasoplegic syndrome (VS) after coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) and identify those miRNAs that could be used as VS prognostic tools and biomarkers. The levels of 754 microRNAs (miRNAs) were measured in whole blood samples from a cohort of patients collected right before the coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) surgery. We compared the miRNA levels of those who developed VS (VASO group) with those who did not (NONVASO group) after surgery. Six miRNAs (hsa-miR-548c-3p, -199b-5p, -383-5p -571 -183-3p, -30d-5p) were increased and two (hsa-1236-3p, and hsa-miR770-5p) were decreased in blood of VASO compared to NONVASO groups. Receiver Operating Characteristic (ROC) curve analysis revealed that a combination of the miRNAs, hsa-miR-30d-5p and hsa-miR-770-5p can be used as VS predictors (AUC = 0.9615, p

Leishmania infantum, a zoonotic vector-born parasite, is endemic in the Mediterranean region, presenting mostly as visceral (VL), but also as cutaneous (CL) and mucosal leishmaniasis (ML). This study aimed to describe the epidemiological and clinical aspects of the CL and ML cases diagnosed in mainland Portugal between 2010 and 2020. Collaboration was requested from every hospital of the Portuguese National Health System. Cases were screened through a search of diagnostic discharge codes or positive laboratory results for Leishmania infection. Simultaneously, a comprehensive literature search was performed. Descriptive statistics and hypothesis testing were performed using IBM® SPSS® Statistics. A total of 43 CL and 7 ML cases were identified, with a predominance of autochthonous cases (86%). In CL, immunosuppressed individuals constituted a significant proportion of patients (48%), and in this group, disseminated CL (22%) and simultaneous VL (54%) were common. In autochthonous cases, lesions, mostly papules/nodules (62%), were frequently observed on the head (48%). The approach to treatment was very heterogeneous. ML cases were all autochthonous, were diagnosed primarily in older immunosuppressed individuals, and were generally treated with liposomal amphotericin B. The findings suggest a need for enhanced surveillance and reporting, clinical awareness, and diagnostic capacity of these forms of leishmaniasis to mitigate underdiagnosis and improve patient outcomes. A holistic One Health approach is advocated to address the multifaceted challenges posed by leishmaniases in Portugal and beyond.

Over the past few decades, people in Saudi Arabia have become less inclined to adopt active lifestyles and healthy eating habits due to the increasing use of digital technologies such as social media. The objective of this online-based cross-sectional study was to assess the role of social media food advertisements and physical activity on eating behaviors among the general population in Saudi Arabia (n = 471). Data were collected through a structured questionnaire, which consisted of four parts: (i) sociodemographic information, (ii) attitude towards social media, (iii) eating behaviors-related information, and (iv) exposure to and engagement with social media advertisements. The study’s outcome variable, eating behaviors (healthy vs. unhealthy), was assessed using the following question: “Are you on a healthy diet (such as a balanced diet, keto, or low carb)?” A multiple binary logistic regression analysis was performed to investigate the factors that influence unhealthy eating behaviors. Approximately 79.6% of the participants had unhealthy eating behaviors. Participants who were not involved in daily physical activity were more likely to have unhealthy eating behaviors compared to their counterparts (adjusted odds ratio, AOR = 4.86). Participants who watched food ads on social media channels 1–3 times a week (AOR = 2.58) or daily (AOR = 3.49) were more likely to have unhealthy eating behaviors than their counterparts. Participants whose appetite to try foods increases always (AOR = 1.42) or usually (AOR = 2.88) after viewing ads on social media were more likely to have unhealthy eating behaviors. These findings suggest that policymakers should take immediate action to regulate food advertising policy to promote a healthy food environment across the country. Saudis should be encouraged to engage in more physical activity, which could support the maintenance of healthy eating patterns and lifestyles.

Obesity entails metabolic alterations across multiple organs, highlighting the role of inter-organ communication in its pathogenesis. Extracellular vesicles (EVs) are communication agents in physiological and pathological conditions, and although they have been associated with obesity comorbidities, their protein cargo in this context remains largely unknown. To decipher the messages encapsulated in EVs, we isolated plasma-derived EVs from a diet-induced obese murine model. Obese plasma EVs exhibited a decline in protein diversity while control EVs revealed significant enrichment in protein-folding functions, highlighting the importance of proper folding in maintaining metabolic homeostasis. Previously, we revealed that gut-derived EVs’ proteome holds particular significance in obesity. Here, we compared plasma and gut EVs and identified four proteins exclusively present in the control state of both EVs, revealing the potential for a non-invasive assessment of gut health by analyzing blood-derived EVs. Given the relevance of post-translational modifications (PTMs), we observed a shift in chromatin-related proteins from glycation to acetylation in obese gut EVs, suggesting a regulatory mechanism targeting DNA transcription during obesity. This study provides valuable insights into novel roles of EVs and protein PTMs in the intricate mechanisms underlying obesity, shedding light on potential biomarkers and pathways for future research.

Sugarcane, a globally cultivated crop constituting nearly 80% of total sugar production, yields residues from harvesting and sugar production known for their renewable bioactive compounds with health-promoting properties. Despite previous studies, the intricate interplay of extracts from diverse sugarcane byproducts and their biological attributes remains underexplored. This study focused on extracting the lipid fraction from a blend of selected sugarcane byproducts (straw, bagasse, and filter cake) using ethanol. The resulting extract underwent comprehensive characterization, including physicochemical analysis (FT-IR, DSC, particle size distribution, and color) and chemical composition assessment (GC-MS). The biological properties were evaluated through antihypertensive (ACE), anticholesterolemic (HMG-CoA reductase), and antidiabetic (alpha-glucosidase and Dipeptidyl Peptidase-IV) assays, alongside in vitro biocompatibility assessments in Caco-2 and Hep G2 cells. The phytochemicals identified, such as β-sitosterol and 1-octacosanol, likely contribute to the extract’s antidiabetic, anticholesterolemic, and antihypertensive potential, given their association with various beneficial bioactivities. The extract exhibited substantial antidiabetic effects, inhibiting α-glucosidase (5–60%) and DPP-IV activity (25–100%), anticholesterolemic potential with HMG-CoA reductase inhibition (11.4–63.2%), and antihypertensive properties through ACE inhibition (24.0–27.3%). These findings lay the groundwork for incorporating these ingredients into the development of food supplements or nutraceuticals, offering potential for preventing and managing metabolic syndrome-associated conditions.

Introdução/objetivo: A forma pulmonar é manifestação mais comum e de maior repercussão de saúde pública da tuberculose, causada pelo Mycobacterium tuberculosis. A recidiva de tuberculose ocorre quando uma pessoa, que já teve a doença ativa previamente e recebeu alta após comprovação de cura ou conclusão do tratamento, volta a manifestá-la, seja por reativação endógena do bacilo ou por reinfecção exógena. O objetivo desse trabalho foi descrever os casos notificados de tuberculose pulmonar que manifestaram posteriormente recidiva, em indivíduos na faixa etária de 19 a 59 anos, entre 2016 e 2022, investigados no estado do Paraná. Métodos: Estudo descritivo, baseado nos casos notificados de tuberculose pulmonar em recidiva, reportados no Sistema Nacional de Agravos de Notificação no estado do Paraná, entre os anos de 2016 até 2022, sob CAAE 38855820.6.0000.5231. Resultados: Foram notificados 13947 casos de tuberculose, 9338 (67%) na forma pulmonar, 620 (6,6%) casos em recidiva. Desses, foram notificados mais casos nos anos de 2020 com 125 (20,2%) seguido de 2017, 117 (18,9%), com predomínio do sexo masculino com 468 casos (75,5%), 375 brancos (60,5%), 367 com até nove anos de estudos (59,2%). A mediana de idade foi 39,80 anos. Quanto às populações com risco acrescido, 99 eram privados de liberdade (16,0%), 57 estavam em situação de rua (9,2%), 4 profissionais da saúde (0,6%) e 4 imigrantes (0,6%). Nota-se que as notificações ao longo dos anos de recidiva em privados de liberdade aumentaram em 2020 (n = 25) e 2021 (n = 25), como também para os casos em situação de rua, 2020 (n = 15) e 2021 (n = 13). Quanto aos agravos, 250 eram tabagistas (40,3%), 192 alcoolistas (31,0%), 191 usuários de drogas ilícitas (30,8%), 88 desenvolveram AIDS (14,2%), 36 com diabetes (5,8%) e 18 transtornos mentais (2,9%). Dos casos de recidiva, 91 (14,7%) eram HIV positivos e 68 (11,0%) em uso de antirretroviral. Somente 437 (70,5%) realizavam o Tratamento Diretamente Observado. Obteve-se 352 curas (56,8%), 56 abandonos (9,0%), 14 óbitos por tuberculose (2,3%) e 28 droga resistente (4,5%). Conclusão: Observa-se maior prevalência para recidiva de tuberculose pulmonar em algumas populações-chave que apresentem comorbidades e práticas de risco acrescido como fatores importantes para novos casos. Deste modo, a rede de cuidado multidisciplinar para pessoas com tuberculose deve dar ênfase a essas populações prioritárias visando reduzir falhas terapêuticas e adesão ao tratamento.

Introdução/objetivo: A tuberculose é um importante problema de saúde pública, e sua transmissão associa-se às condições de vida. A população privada de liberdade configura-se como uma das mais vulneráveis, sendo o sistema prisional um ambiente potencialmente transmissor da tuberculose. Assim, tem-se como objetivo descrever os casos de tuberculose pulmonar notificados entre os anos de 2016 a 2022 na população privada de liberdade no estado do Paraná. Métodos: Estudo transversal descritivo, utilizando banco de dados do Sistema de Informações de Agravos e Notificação (SINAN). Foram avaliados dentre a população privada de liberdade entre 19 a 59 anos que tiveram tuberculose notificada entre 2016 a 2022, cujas formas clínicas incluíam a pulmonar, podendo ser isolada ou associada a formas extrapulmonares. Os dados foram analisados por meio do software Statistical Package for the Social Science (SPSS), versão 22.0, com análise de frequência. O projeto foi aprovado pelo Comitê de Ética em Pesquisa (CAAE 38855820.6.0000.5231). Resultados: Dos 11.085 casos de tuberculose notificados no período nessa faixa etária, 8,6% (n = 1.406) eram da população privada de liberdade. Quanto à forma, apenas 3,2% (n = 42) tiveram a forma pulmonar e extrapulmonar conjugadas. Os outros 1.252 tiveram a forma pulmonar isolada, e 112 apresentaram apenas formas extrapulmonares, logo, não entraram na amostra desse estudo. Excluindo as outras formas da doença, a amostra foi de 1.294, com média de idade de 30 anos, incidência majoritária em homens (97,4%; n = 1.261), brancos (62,3%; n = 806), mais da metade (65,9%; n = 833) apresentavam de zero até nove anos de estudo e 8,5% (n = 112) apresentando coinfecção com o vírus HIV. Três quartos foram casos novos (76,3%; n = 987) e chamou-se a atenção o número de indivíduos que faziam uso do tabaco (51,2%; n = 662) e de drogas ilícitas (49,5%; n = 640), quando avaliados as doenças e agravos associados. Quanto à resistência terapêutica, importante de ser considerada no ambiente de privação de liberdade, 7,2% (n = 92) apresentaram alguma resistência às medicações. Conclusão: Houve predomino do sexo masculino, brancos, com escolaridade de zero a nove anos. Quanto, a forma de entrada, a maioria eram casos novos e apresentavam agravos associados referente ao uso de tabaco e drogas ilícitas. Conhecer as características da tuberculose em populações vulneráveis pode auxiliar no planejamento e execução de ações para esses grupos específicos, visando o controle da doença.

Reflectins are a family of intrinsically disordered proteins involved in cephalopod camouflage, making them an interesting source for bioinspired optical materials. Understanding reflectin assembly into higher-order structures by standard biophysical methods enables the rational design of new materials, but it is difficult due to their low solubility. To address this challenge, we aim to understand the molecular self-assembly mechanism of reflectin’s basic unit—the protopeptide sequence YMDMSGYQ—as a means to understand reflectin’s assembly phenomena. Protopeptide self-assembly was triggered by different environmental cues, yielding supramolecular hydrogels, and characterized by experimental and theoretical methods. Protopeptide films were also prepared to assess optical properties. Our results support the hypothesis for the protopeptide aggregation model at an atomistic level, led by hydrophilic and hydrophobic interactions mediated by tyrosine residues. Protopeptide-derived films were optically active, presenting diffuse reflectance in the visible region of the light spectrum. Hence, these results contribute to a better understanding of the protopeptide structural assembly, crucial for the design of peptide- and reflectin-based functional materials.

Medical Genetics is a transversal and multidisciplinary medical speciality whose activity encompasses, in a general and simplistic perspective, the diagnosis of rare genetic diseases and genetic counselling of hereditary pathologies. Genetic information is, more than medical information, health information and it has implications not only for the self but also for family members. Although this medical specialization deals with risks and probabilities based on exact sciences and rigorous laboratory methodology, it also keeps challenging professionals to think ethically in different daily situations. Even in cases where the law is specific and quite rigorous on how to deal with the problem, it can be challenging to know which is the most ethical conduct in this rarity world. Henceforth, some examples will be given to make us think about how genetics can be a science art with certainties and queries.

Resumo Este artigo trata do tema da crise ambiental que nos ensina sobre reconhecer a devastação ocasionada pelos processos coloniais e o esforço global por uma emancipação ambiental. Abordamos o conceito de crise ambiental no âmbito do campo de conhecimento antropológico. Objetivamos refletir sobre a tensão, a violência e o conflito na relação entre a sociedade e a natureza. Em um mundo de recursos naturais finitos, destacamos o despreparo do poder público para lidar com os desafios climáticos e impactos do aquecimento global na forma desigual com que atinge a população mundial e a urgência de serviços do Estado para a mitigação de ações predatórias e a necessária inovação de biopolíticas (nacionais e internacionais) de preservação e fiscalização acompanhadas de ampla participação social.

Summary: During cytokinesis, a contractile ring consisting of unbranched filamentous actin (F-actin) and myosin II constricts at the cell equator. Unbranched F-actin is generated by formin, and without formin no cleavage furrow forms. In Caenorhabditis elegans, depletion of septin restores furrow ingression in formin mutants. How the cleavage furrow ingresses without a detectable unbranched F-actin ring is unknown. We report that, in this setting, anillin (ANI-1) forms a meshwork of circumferentially aligned linear structures decorated by non-muscle myosin II (NMY-2). Analysis of ANI-1 deletion mutants reveals that its disordered N-terminal half is required for linear structure formation and sufficient for furrow ingression. NMY-2 promotes the circumferential alignment of the linear ANI-1 structures and interacts with various lipids, suggesting that NMY-2 links the ANI-1 network with the plasma membrane. Collectively, our data reveal a compensatory mechanism, mediated by ANI-1 linear structures and membrane-bound NMY-2, that promotes furrowing when unbranched F-actin polymerization is compromised.

Trata-se de uma pesquisa, realizada por ocasião da conclusão de curso, cujo objetivo visava a compreender a perspectiva das crianças acerca das atividades de alfabetização e letramento, realizadas na Educação Infantil. Nota-se, nos últimos anos da Educação Infantil, que há uma expectativa, das professoras, pais, gestores educacionais, em enviar as crianças para os Anos Iniciais do Ensino Fundamental com conhecimentos de leitura e escrita. Por isso, as práticas de alfabetização e letramento acabam se tornando comuns nas turmas de pré-escola da Educação Infantil. Considerando-se isso, com base na Sociologia da Infância (SARMENTO, 2003, 2005, 2013) realizou-se uma pesquisa com as crianças, entendendo-as como sujeitos competentes, produtores de conhecimento e cultura. Em uma abordagem qualitativa, na produção de dados com as crianças, foram propostas atividades baseadas em métodos tradicionais e construtivistas de alfabetização e letramento (SOARES, 2004, 2017; FERREIRO, TEBEROSKI, 1985), e entrevistas-conversa (SARAMAGO, 2001) com os sujeitos da investigação. As categorias de análise dividiram-se em duas: perspectivas das crianças sobre as atividades tradicionais e perspectivas das crianças sobre as atividades construtivistas. Os resultados da análise dos dados indicaram que as atividades construtivistas, pautadas na ludicidade, como jogos e brincadeiras, são indicadas pelas crianças e se tornam eficientes para inseri-las no mundo letrado, pois respeitam as lógicas infantis, valorizam a participação da criança e de suas diferentes formas de expressão e comunicação.

ABSTRACT Objectives: to analyze the factors associated with the time to surgical treatment for breast cancer in patients seen at a reference mastology outpatient clinic in the State of Ceará. Methods: analytical, longitudinal study with medical charts from the Mastology Outpatient Clinic of Assis Chateaubriand Maternity School. We used 140 medical charts of breast cancer patients with surgeries performed during the pandemic. Results: the study evidenced associations between schooling and shorter time to treatment in patients who underwent biopsy before the first outpatient visit (p = 0.026; OR: 0.16; CI = 0.03-0.85); in the group who had the biopsy performed by the outpatient clinic, was associated the type of tumor (p = 0.019) and neoadjuvant therapy (p = 0.000). Conclusions: the lesser educational level, tumor type, and use of neoadjuvant therapy were factors associated with the time to treatment during the pandemic period.

Endometriosis is a relatively common gynecological condition in women of reproductive age. The rectosigmoid region is the most commonly affected segment when the gastrointestinal tract is involved. A differential diagnosis of colorectal neoplasia is difficult because of the similar clinical, endoscopic, and radiology findings. A 42-year-old female presented with abdominal distention and was subsequently diagnosed with a large bowel obstruction in the rectum. A temporary colostomy was performed, and endoscopy revealed a rectal mass obstructing the rectum. The biopsy showed normal mucosa, and it was difficult to exclude rectal malignancies even after the imaging workup. Endoscopic ultrasound demonstrated a hypoechoic lesion below the rectal mucosa, and fine needle aspiration confirmed the diagnosis of bowel endometriosis. Bowel endometriosis is a challenging diagnosis. Endoscopic ultrasound- guided fine-needle aspiration is useful for acquiring adequate samples for histological confirmation and a definitive diagnosis of bowel endometriosis.

Abstract Background Among the food additives used in the food industry, food dyes are considered the most toxic. For instance, tartrazine (TRZ) is a food colorant commercially available with conflicting data regarding its cytotoxic, genotoxic, and mutagenic effects. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the cytotoxic and mutagenic potential of TRZ using different eukaryotic cells (in vitro). Methods This study employed 3-(4,5-dimethyl-2-thiazolyl)-2,5-diphenyl-2H-tetrazolium bromide (MTT), brine shrimp lethality, Allium cepa and Saccharomyces cerevisiae tests. Different concentrations of TRZ and different exposure times were used in this study. Results The results demonstrate that TRZ induced a concentration-dependent toxic effect on the test systems. It also exerted cytotoxicity in fibroblasts and human gastric cells. In addition, TRZ showed mutagenic effects on the A. cepa test system. However, its toxicogenic effects may not relate to the oxidizing activity, which was confirmed by the S. cerevisiae test model. Conclusion Taken together, TRZ exerted toxicogenic effects on the test systems. Therefore, it may be harmful to health, especially its prolonged use may trigger carcinogenesis.

Este trabalho teve como objetivo geral investigar as contribuições das atividades gamificadas à habilidade leitora no ensino em língua inglesa. Para isso, os aspectos metodológicos desta pesquisa perpassaram a pesquisa descritiva documental, de natureza qualitativa, com delineamento de levantamento, que consistiu no estudo e levantamento de informações sobre as práticas de leitura e as experiências de gamificação, buscando apresentar uma sugestão de atividade gamificada a ser utilizada nas aulas de língua inglesa nos anos iniciais do ensino fundamental. Verificou-se que a habilidade leitora tem, notoriamente, importância primordial para os indivíduos em sua língua materna, como uma prática comunicativa democratizada e democratizante que possibilita ao sujeito uma maior autonomia e cidadania. Essa relevância se expande para a língua estrangeira, dentro da proposta apresentada pela Base Nacional Comum Curricular (BNCC), na medida em que os estudantes podem explorar práticas de linguagem para a construção de significados, em uma relação que envolve aspectos de prática social e de constituição de sujeito. Assim, a leitura em língua adicional abre espaço para reflexão, autonomia e sensibilização ao outro na busca por uma compreensão de sua própria realidade. Como auxílio no caminho para o letramento, o docente pode elaborar questionamentos que auxiliem o processamento e a compreensão do texto. O jogo, por sua vez, é um instrumento pedagógico que pode auxiliar o professor no processo de ensino aprendizagem da língua inglesa, portanto a gamificação pode contribuir para uma aprendizagem mais significativa e atrativa para os estudantes nos anos iniciais do ensino fundamental, inserindo o lúdico, a motivação e a interação. A pesquisa evidenciou que as atividades gamificadas podem contribuir de forma significativa para o desenvolvimento da habilidade leitora no ensino em língua inglesa voltado para estudantes dos anos iniciais do ensino fundamental.

Entre los diversos temas que permean la Educación en Ciencias (EC), se enfatizan los modos de enseñanza y aprendizaje con foco en los aspectos conceptuales y cognitivos. Este ensayo tiene como objetivo presentar una Filosofía de la Educación en Ciencias (FEC) basada en la Hermenéutica Filosófica (HF) de Hans-Georg Gadamer con el fin de promover un camino ontológico para la EC que pueda sortear el énfasis mencionado. La FEC está constituida por la intersección de tres campos académicos: Filosofía, Filosofía de la Educación y Filosofía de la Ciencia. En Filosofía, el movimiento de comprender entender de manera ontológica explorado por Gadamer permite ver la Hermenéutica más allá de un carácter metodológico. En la Filosofía de la Educación, la HF se extiende a la apropiación del conocimiento, agregando una formación personal en la que hay exposición a la duda, valoración del diálogo, escucha del otro y búsqueda de la comprensión del mundo, pero también de uno mismo. En la Filosofía de la Ciencia, la perspectiva gadameriana permite una visión del trabajo científico en una racionalidad que se entrelaza con aspectos históricos, filosóficos y culturales a través de una aproximación entre la Hermenéutica y las Ciencias Naturales. Señalamos que una EC en la articulación entre estos campos con sesgo gadameriano promueve cambios en la dinámica escolar, en la disposición del alumno y del docente, en la forma de entenderse a sí mismo, al mundo y al lenguaje científico.

Introduction Currently, breast cancer ranks first among female malignancies; hence, there are strong recommendations for the early inclusion of these patients in palliative care. Palliative care aims to alleviate symptoms improving the quality of life of dying patients, an essential component of breast cancer care. This study aimed to map and synthesise the available evidence on palliative care for women with breast cancer and to discuss the review results with stakeholders.Methods A scoping review protocol is presented in this article, consisting of two phases. In the first phase, a scoping review study will be conducted adhering to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses Extension for Scoping Reviews (PRISMA-ScR) guidelines and guided by the Joanna Briggs Institute Manual for Evidence Synthesis. Nine databases, an electronic repository, a trial register website, grey literature and additional sources will be searched. A focus group discussion with six stakeholders will occur in the second phase. The analysis will be performed through inductive and manifest content analysis using the IRaMuTeQ V.0.7 alpha software.Ethics and dissemination The scoping review protocol did not require ethical approval. However, the study’s second phase has been approved by the institutional review board of Maternidade Escola Assis Chateaubriand/MEAC/UFC. The findings will be disseminated through professional networks, conference presentations and publications.

Introdução: Crianças com COVID-19 podem ser assintomáticas ou podem ter apresentação clínica heterogênea. O objetivo desta série de casos foi relatar as manifestações clínicas da COVID-19 em crianças e adolescentes internados em unidade de terapia intensiva pediátrica (UTIP) na cidade de São Carlos, Brasil, durante 2020 e 2021. Relatos: Os casos foram seis crianças com idade entre 3 meses e 13 anos, com COVID-19. Os dados foram coletados do prontuário eletrônico. Todos os casos foram contactantes domiciliares de algum caso de COVID-19. Dois casos se apresentaram como síndrome multissistêmica inflamatória (MIS-C), sendo um destes com icterícia e ascite. Um caso manifestou convulsão. Um caso necessitou de ventilação mecânica invasiva e dois casos apresentaram sintomas gastrointestinais. Não foi observado óbito entre os casos e o tempo de permanência na UTIP variou de 0 a 16 dias. Conclusão: Nos seis casos relatados, a COVID-19 revelou manifestações clínicas variadas, com rápida resolução e não foi observado óbito. É importante enfatizar que a história de contato com uma pessoa sintomática respiratória deveria guiar a suspeita de COVID-19 em crianças e indicar acompanhamento, uma vez que esta doença pode ser grave nesta população.

Chondrosia reniformis is a collagen-rich marine sponge that is considered a sustainable and viable option for producing an alternative to mammalian-origin collagens. However, there is a lack of knowledge regarding the properties of collagen isolated from different sponge parts, namely the outer region, or cortex, (ectosome) and the inner region (choanosome), and how it affects the development of biomaterials. In this study, a brief histological analysis focusing on C. reniformis collagen spatial distribution and a comprehensive comparative analysis between collagen isolated from ectosome and choanosome are presented. The isolated collagen characterization was based on isolation yield, Fourier-transformed infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), circular dichroism (CD), SDS-PAGE, dot blot, and amino acid composition, as well as their cytocompatibility envisaging the development of future biomedical applications. An isolation yield of approximately 20% was similar for both sponge parts, as well as the FTIR, CD, and SDS-PAGE profiles, which demonstrated that both isolated collagens presented a high purity degree and preserved their triple helix and fibrillar conformation. Ectosome collagen had a higher OHpro content and possessed collagen type I and IV, while the choanosome was predominately constituted by collagen type IV. In vitro cytotoxicity assays using the L929 fibroblast cell line displayed a significant cytotoxic effect of choanosome collagen at 2 mg/mL, while ectosome collagen enhanced cell metabolism and proliferation, thus indicating the latter as being more suitable for the development of biomaterials. This research represents a unique comparative study of C. reniformis body parts, serving as a support for further establishing this marine sponge as a promising alternative collagen source for the future development of biomedical applications.
