Plant roots connect belowground moisture with aboveground vegetation functionalities, making root plasticity critical for drought resilience. This study employs an enhanced land surface ecohydrological model, Duke Coupled Hydrology Model with Vegetation and Dynamic Roots (DCHM-VDR), to investigate how root dynamics affect vegetation adaptation under a range of climate conditions. DCHM-VDR features a moisture-driven root parameterization that simulates dynamic root profiles and hydraulic redistribution (HR). Applied to a semiarid woodland with groundwater-dependent mesquites and shallow-rooted shrubs, model results compare well against AmeriFlux tower data and capture observed soil moisture patterns tied to root water uptake, including mesquite’s dimorphic root profile and shifts in water source and the direction of HR. Accounting for HR lowers overall water use efficiency (WUE) by more than 50% in the dry season due to release of deep root water uptake to moisten dry soil layers. Dynamic root profiles reduce water demand by avoiding dry soil patches and utilizing moist layers with increased WUE, especially for shrubs. Mesquites with a dimorphic root profile show a 3-fold annual transpiration (Tr) increase from 183 mm to 629 mm/year and reduced HR/Tr from 34% to 6%, along with a small reduction of around 10% for shrubs, reflecting the importance of groundwater sourcing and the codependence of shrubs on mesquite for water stress resilience. Future climate scenarios were examined using the Thermodynamic Global Warming downscaled data. Mesquites and shrubs respond positively to wetter winters, albeit with opposite water use strategies in the drier growing seasons due to different rooting depths and HR modulation of soil moisture. Mesquites increase transpiration by adjusting root fraction, water uptake, and HR closer to the saturated zone, while shrubs reduce transpiration and increase WUE by 17% compared to a decrease of 13% in mesquite WUE under the driest scenario. The intertwined water use strategies of mesquites and shrubs expressed by the root water uptake dynamics determine ecosystem response aboveground under more extreme climate conditions, highlighting the importance of modeling root architecture dynamics and co-adaptive ecohydrological processes in predicting ecosystem responses to climate change.

The sensitivity of warm orographic cloud development to aerosol indirect effects was investigated through aerosol-aware Weather Research and Forecast model simulations contrasting aerosol-cloud-precipitation interactions using the default (generic) aerosol and regional aerosol measurements from the Integrated Precipitation and Hydrology Experiment in the Southern Appalachian Mountains for three rainfall events: 1) enhanced local convection; 2) a frontal system, and 3) a tropical system. Using the regional aerosol activation spectrum yields higher number of drops than using the default, smaller cloud droplets and delayed rainfall onset under weak synoptic forcing conditions. Evaluation against aircraft measurements in isolated convective clouds reveals that while the model microphysics falls short of reproducing the vertical structure of nonprecipitating clouds, the liquid water content, and the concentration of cloud droplets near cloud base are in keeping with observations. The simulated cloud vertical structure shows the regional signature of orographic enhancement over the mountains vis-a-vis the adjacent plains. In the inner region, valley-ridge circulations organize the spatial patterns of cloudiness under weak synoptic forcing. The formation of early afternoon low-level clouds over the ridges in the summertime reflects the aerosol indirect effect. By contrast, for large-scale systems with strong and sustained moisture convergence at low levels (frontal and tropical systems), mechanically forced rainfall efficiency is enhanced, there is no delay in the onset of precipitation, and the aerosol indirect effect is negligible. This study shows that the impact of aerosol-cloud-precipitation interactions on the spatial variability of orographic rainfall is conditional on weather regime.

This study examines the implications of Tropical Montane Forests (TMFs) loss on orographic precipitation in the Eastern slopes of the Andes (EADS). The focus is on moist processes for synoptic regimes associated with significant EADS precipitation: (1) monsoon rainfall for weak and strong South America Low-Level Jet (LLJ) conditions and (2) heavy rainfall associated with cold air intrusions (CAI) in the dry season. High-resolution simulations using the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model were conducted for realistic and modified land-cover resulting from the conversion of TMFs to savanna. The deforestation scenarios result in 50–100% decrease (up to ∼400 J kg–1) in Convective Available Potential Energy (CAPE) spatially organized by land-cover change along the EADS. Long-duration localized heavy rainfall (> 6 h, < 10 km2) was recorded by raingauges on October 4, 2013 at mid-elevations (~ 1, 500 m) in the Peruvian Andes, which was not apparent in infrared or microwave measurements from either geostationary or polar orbiting satellites. This spring event is investigated here through a numerical modeling study using the Weather and Research Forecasting (WRF) model, and examined in the context of the climatology of Cold Air Intrusions (CAIs) along the eastern flanks of the tropical Andes. The model results suggest significant precipitation enhancement from intense shallow convection at the CAI frontal boundary amplified by orographic lifting as it propagates northward latched to the slopes of Andes. Analysis of CAI mesoscale dynamics was conducted using four decades of European Center Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) reanalysis, Tropical Rainfall Measurement Mission (TRMM) data products, and rain-gauge observations with emphasis on characterizing year-round CAI frequency, CAI interactions with Andes topography, and their impact on orographic precipitation climatology. The data show a robust enhancement of the diurnal cycle of precipitation during CAI events in all seasons, and in particular increases in surface rainfall rate during early morning at intermediate elevations (~ 1,500 m), that is the eastern Andes orographic maximum. This link between CAI frequency and rainfall suggests that they play an important role in maintaining the Andes to Amazon year-round terrestrial connectivity through runoff production and transport by the river networks.

Study region: Southeast US (SE US). Study focus: This study probes the propagation of errors in standard remote-sensing vegetation products caused by cloud contamination and the impact of time-variant radiative properties for correctly describing land-surface properties in hydrologic models. Spatiotemporally-varying quality-controlled vegetation attributes (i.e., leaf area index and fractional vegetation coverage) and surface radiative properties (i.e., longwave broadband emissivity and shortwave broadband albedo) were derived from MODIS (Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer) products over the SE US at 1 km × 1 km and hourly resolutions from 2007 to 2013. The data sets are publicly available. The impact of uncorrected standard vegetation products and static treatments of radiative properties was assessed systematically clearly illustrating improvements in simulated water and energy fluxes using the developed landscape attributes with a fully-distributed uncalibrated hydrologic model. New hydrological insights for the region: Through simulations in the Southern Appalachian Mountains, we found that the spatiotemporal variability of radiative properties significantly influences the diurnal cycle of the surface energy budget with marked differences in sensible heat fluxes (up to 10–20%). Better performance of streamflow simulations achieved by using the improved vegetation attributes is tied to changes in rainfall interception and evapotranspiration, reflecting the importance of SE forests in the regional water cycle. The largest improvements in streamflow simulations result from larger corrections to MODIS products in the inner mountain region where cloudiness is persistent. Hydro-climatic resilience is an essential element of food security. The miombo ecosystem in Southern Africa supports varied land uses for a growing population. Albedo, Leaf Area Index (LAI), Fractional Vegetation Cover (FVC), Solar-Induced chlorophyll Fluorescence (SIF), and precipitation remote-sensing data for current climate were jointly analyzed to explore vegetation dynamics and water availability feedbacks. Changes in the surface energy balance tied to vegetation status were examined in the light of an hourly albedo product with improved atmospheric correction derived for this study. Phase-space analysis shows that the albedo’s seasonality tracks the landscape-scale functional stability of miombo and woody savanna with respect to precipitation variations. Miombo exhibits the best adaptive traits to water stress which highlights synergies among root-system water uptake capacity, vegetation architecture, and landscape hydro-geomorphology. This explains why efforts to conserve the spatial structure of the miombo forest in sustainable farming of seasonal wetlands have led to significant crop yield increases. Grass savanna’s high vulnerability to water stress is illustrative of potential run-away impacts of miombo deforestation. This study suggests that phase-space analysis of albedo, SIF, and FVC can be used as operational diagnostics of ecosystem health.

Ensemble predictions of the seasonal snowpack over the Grand Mesa, CO (~300 km2) for the hydrologic year 2016–2017 were conducted using a multilayer snow hydrology model. Snowpack ensembles were driven by gridded atmospheric reanalysis and evaluated against SnowEx’17 measurements. The multi-frequency microwave brightness temperatures and backscattering behavior of the snowpack (separate from soil and vegetation contributions) show that at sub-daily time-scales, the ensemble standard deviation (i.e., weather variability at 3 × 3 km2) is < 3 dB for dry snow, and increases to 8–10 dB at mid-day when there is surficial melt that also explains the wide ensemble range (~20 dB). The linear relationship of the ensemble mean backscatter with SWE (R2 > 0.95) depends on weather conditions (e.g., 5–6 cm/dB/month in January; 2–2.5 cm/dB/month in late February as melt-refreeze cycles modify the microphysics in the top 50 cm of the snowpack). The nonlinear evolution of ensemble snowpack physics translates into seasonal hysteresis in the mesoscale microwave behavior. The backscatter hysteretic offsets between accumulation and melt regimes are robust in the L- and C-bands and collapse for wet, shallow snow at Ku-band. The emissions behave as a limit-cycles with weak sensitivity in the accumulation regime, and hysteretic behavior during melt that is different for deep (winter-spring transition) and shallow snow (spring-summer), and offsets that increase with frequency. These findings suggest potential for multi-frequency active-passive remote-sensing of high-elevation SWE conditional on snowpack regime, particularly suited for data-assimilation using coupled snow hydrology-microwave models extended to include snow-soil and snow-vegetation interactions.

Previous examination of rain gauge observations over a five-year period at high elevations within a river basin of the southern Appalachian Mountains showed that half of the extreme (upper 2.5%) rainfall events were associated with an atmospheric river (AR). Of these extreme events having an AR association, over 73% were linked to a societal hazard at downstream locations in eastern Tennessee and western North Carolina. Our analysis in this study was expanded to investigate AR effects in the southern Appalachian Mountains on two river basins, located 60 km apart, and examine their influence on extreme rainfall, periods of elevated precipitation and landslide events over two time periods, the ‘recent’ and ‘distant’ past. Results showed that slightly more than half of the extreme rainfall events were directly attributable to an AR in both river basins. However, there was disagreement on individual ARs influencing extreme rainfall events in each basin, seemingly a reflection of its proximity to the Blue Ridge Escarpment and the localized terrain lining the river basin boundary. Days having at least one landslide occurring in western North Carolina were found to be correlated with long periods of elevated precipitation, which often also corresponded to the influence of ARs and extreme rainfall events.

The Upper Zambezi River Basin (UZRB) delineates a complex region of topographic, soil and rainfall gradients between the Congo rainforest and the Kalahari Desert. Satellite imagery shows permanent wetlands in low-lying convergence zones where surface–groundwater interactions are vigorous. A dynamic wetland classification based on MODIS Nadir BRDF-Adjusted Reflectance is developed to capture the inter-annual and seasonal changes in areal extent due to groundwater redistribution and rainfall variability. Simulations of the coupled water–carbon cycles of seasonal wetlands show nearly double rates of carbon uptake as compared to dry areas, at increasingly lower water-use efficiencies as the dry season progresses. Thus, wetland extent and persistence into the dry season is key to the UZRB’s carbon sink and water budget. Whereas groundwater recharge governs the expansion of wetlands in the rainy season under large-scale forcing, wetland persistence in April–June (wet–dry transition months) is tied to daily morning fog and clouds, and by afternoon land–atmosphere interactions (isolated convection). Rainfall suppression in July–September results from colder temperatures, weaker regional circulations, and reduced instability in the lower troposphere, shutting off moisture recycling in the dry season despite high evapotranspiration rates. The co-organization of precipitation and wetlands reflects land–atmosphere interactions that determine wetland seasonal persistence, and the coupled water and carbon cycles.

Satellite orographic precipitation estimates exhibit large errors with space-time structure tied to landform. Observations in the Southern Appalachian Mountains (SAM) suggest that low-level clouds and fog (LLCF) amplify mid-day rainfall via seeder-feeder interactions (SFI) at both high and low elevations. Knowledge on biodiversity is fundamental for conservation strategies. The Brazilian Pampa region, located in subtropical southern Brazil, is neglected in terms of conservation, and knowledge of its biodiversity is fragmented. We aim to answer the question: how many, and which, species occur in the Brazilian Pampa? In a collaborative effort, we built species lists for plants, animals, bacteria, and fungi that occur in the Brazilian Pampa. We included information on distribution patterns, main habitat types, and conservation status. Our study resulted in referenced lists totaling 12,503 species (12,854 taxa, when considering infraspecific taxonomic categories [or units]). Vascular plants amount to 3,642 species (including 165 Pteridophytes), while algae have 2,046 species (2,378 taxa) and bryophytes 316 species (318 taxa). Fungi (incl. lichenized fungi) contains 1,141 species (1,144 taxa). Animals total 5,358 species (5,372 taxa). Among the latter, vertebrates comprise 1,136 species, while invertebrates are represented by 4,222 species. Our data indicate that, according to current knowledge, the Pampa holds approximately 9% of the Brazilian biodiversity in an area of little more than 2% of Brazil’s total land. The proportion of species restricted to the Brazilian Pampa is low (with few groups as exceptions), as it is part of a larger grassland ecoregion and in a transitional climatic setting. Our study yielded considerably higher species numbers than previously known for many species groups; for some, it provides the first published compilation. Further efforts are needed to increase knowledge in the Pampa and other regions of Brazil. Considering the strategic importance of biodiversity and its conservation, appropriate government policies are needed to fund studies on biodiversity, create accessible and constantly updated biodiversity databases, and consider biodiversity in school curricula and other outreach activities.

This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of bioactive toothpastes in remineralizing eroded enamel surfaces in vitro. Bovine enamel blocks (n = 48) were obtained and classified into untreated, demineralized, and treated areas. Specimens were randomly classified into six groups (n = 8 each): fluoride-free toothpaste (NCT), Colgate Total 12 (PCT), Sensodyne Repair and Protect (SRP), Sensodyne Pronamel (SPE), Regenerador + Sensitive (RGS), and RGS/calcium booster (RCB). The specimens were subjected to erosive pH cycling for 5 days for 4 times/day (90 s) and treated with toothpaste slurries (1:3) for 1 min. The Vickers hardness (50 g/10 s) and percentage surface hardness recovery (%SMHR) were calculated. Furthermore, the topography and roughness (Ra) of the enamel surface were evaluated using a 3D non-contact optical profilometer, along with the tooth surface loss (TSL). Data were statistically analyzed using analysis of variance or Tukey's test (significance: 5%). The %SMHR of the SRP and NCT groups were significantly lower than those of the other groups (p < 0.05). Ra was higher when the eroded area was treated with SRP and SPE (p < 0.05). Treatment with RGS, PCT, and SPE favored the recovery of the enamel surface compared with the NCT group (p < 0.05). The best TSL results were obtained with treatment with RGS, followed by PCT and SPE (p < 0.05). The RCB group showed statistically equivalent results for surface hardness recovery and TSL (p > 0.05). Conclusively, PCT and RGS toothpastes were more effective in remineralizing the enamel surface. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
