The Tax Institute firmly believes that 2021 should be a year that focuses on necessary tax reform to assist economic recovery and protect future generations. The committees consider, analyse, debate, prepare submissions and report on the development, implementation and administration of tax technical and policy issues related to their specific area of tax law.

A personal narrative is presented which explores the author's experience of being wrote a column about re-examining the Australian tax base to ensure that Australia would have a strong tax system in the future, and had no idea what challenges 2020 would bring.

The article offers information on The Tax Institute which has strongly advocated for an extension of the superannuation guarantee (SG) amnesty which allows employers to disclose and pay previously unpaid SG charges for the period from July 1, 1992 to March 31, 2018 without certain penalties being applied. It discusses that the Institute is disappointed that its calls for a six-month extension of the deadline appear to have been ignored.
