MXenes are a rapidly-expanding family of 2D transition metal carbides and nitrides that have attracted attention due to their excellent performance in applications ranging from energy storage to electromagnetic interference shielding. Numerous other electronic and magnetic properties have been computationally predicted, but not yet realized due to the experimental difficulty in obtaining uniform surface terminations (Tx), necessitating new design approaches for MXenes that are independent of surface terminations. In this study, we distinguished the contributions of surface and sub-surface Ti atoms to the electronic structure of four Ti-containing MXenes (Ti2CTx, Ti3C2Tx, Cr2TiC2Tx, and Mo2TiC2Tx) using soft x-ray absorption spectroscopy. For MXenes with no Ti atoms on the surface transition metal layers, such as Mo2TiC2Tx and Cr2TiC2Tx, our results show minimal changes in the spectral features between the parent MAX phase and its MXene. In contrast, for MXenes with surface Ti atoms, here Ti3C2Tx and Ti2CTx, the Ti L-edge spectra are significantly modified compared to their parent MAX phase compounds. First principles calculations provide similar trends in the partial density of states derived from surface and sub-surface Ti atoms, corroborating the spectroscopic measurements. These results reveal that electronic states derived from sub-surface M-site layers are largely unperturbed by the surface terminations, indicating a relatively short length scale over which the Tx terminations alter the nominal electron count associated with Ti atoms and suggesting that desired band features should be hosted by sub-surface M-sites that are electronically more robust than their surface M-site counterparts.

Two-dimensional (2D) materials are highly anisotropic, with thicknesses on the order of a nanometer and lateral dimensions upward of hundreds of nanometers to micrometers. Controlling the assembly of these materials has direct implications for their properties and performance. We here describe the interfacial assembly and jamming of Ti3C2Tx MXene nanosheets at the oil-water interface. Planar, as well as complex, programmed three-dimensional all-liquid objects are realized. Our approach presents potential for the creation of all-liquid 3D-printed devices for possible applications in all-liquid electrochemical and energy storage devices and electrically active, all-liquid fluidics that exploits the versatile structure, functionality, and reconfigurability of liquids.

MXenes have demonstrated potential for various applications owing to their tunable surface chemistry and metallic conductivity. However, high temperatures can accelerate MXene film oxidation in air. Understanding the mechanisms of MXene oxidation at elevated temperatures, which is still limited, is critical in improving their thermal stability for high-temperature applications. Here, we demonstrate that Ti3C2Tx MXene monoflakes have exceptional thermal stability at temperatures up to 600 °C in air, while multiflakes readily oxidize in air at 300 °C. Density functional theory calculations indicate that confined water between Ti3C2Tx flakes has higher removal energy than surface water and can thus persist to higher temperatures, leading to oxidation. We demonstrate that the amount of confined water correlates with the degree of oxidation in stacked flakes. Confined water can be fully removed by vacuum annealing Ti3C2Tx films at 600 °C, resulting in substantial stability improvement in multiflake films (can withstand 600 °C in air). These findings provide fundamental insights into the kinetics of confined water and its role in Ti3C2Tx oxidation. This work enables the use of stable monoflake MXenes in high-temperature applications and provides guidelines for proper vacuum annealing of multiflake films to enhance their stability. 2D vanadium carbide MXene containing surface functional groups (denoted as V2CTx, where Tx are surface functional groups) is synthesized and studied as anode material for Na-ion batteries. V2CTx anode exhibits reversible charge storage with good cycling stability and high rate capability through electrochemical test. The charge storage mechanism of V2CTx material during Na+ intercalation/deintercalation and the redox reaction of vanadium are studied using a combination of synchrotron based X-ray diffraction, hard X-ray absorption near edge spectroscopy (XANES), and soft X-ray absorption spectroscopy (sXAS). Experimental evidence of a major contribution of redox reaction of vanadium to the charge storage and the reversible capacity of V2CTx during sodiation/desodiation process are provided through V K-edge XANES and V L2,3-edge sXAS results. A correlation between the CO32− content and the Na+ intercalation/deintercalation states in the V2CTx electrode observed from C and O K-edge in sXAS results implies that some additional charge storage reactions may take place between the Na+-intercalated V2CTx and the carbonate-based nonaqueous electrolyte. The results of this study provide valuable information for the further studies on V2CTx as anode material for Na-ion batteries and capacitors.

2D rare-earth metal carbides (MXenes) are attractive due to their novel electronic and magnetic properties and their potential as scalable 2D magnets. In this study, we used density functional theory with the Hubbard U correction to characterize the structure, termination, and magnetism in an out-of-plane ordered rare-earth containing M3C2Tx MXene, Mo2NdC2T2 (T = O or OH). We investigated the effect of the U parameter on the stability and magnetism of two possible termination sites: the hollow sites aligned with the inner Nd atoms (Nd-hollow sites) and those aligned with the closest C atoms (C-hollow sites). We found that increasing UMo stabilized the Nd hollow sites, which minimized electrostatic repulsion between C and O atoms. Using UMo = 3.0 eV and UNd = 5.6 eV, obtained via the linear response method, we found that the energetically preferred termination site was C-hollow in Mo2NdC2O2 and Nd-hollow in Mo2NdC2(OH)2. Regardless of termination and the Hubbard U value, we found Mo2NdC2O2 and Mo2NdC2(OH)2 to be magnetic. The C-hollow termination resulted in ferromagnetic states for all Hubbard U tested with no magnetic moment in Mo. In the case of Nd-hollow, Mo became magnetic for UMo ≥ 4 eV. The difference of Mo magnetism in Nd-hollow and C-hollow was explained by crystal field splitting of the Mo d orbital caused by a distorted ligand. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

For better charge storage and rate performance, supercapacitors need unique electrode materials and design architectures. Recent interest in metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) stems from their chemical compatibility with host materials and the abundance of active sites. However, their direct use as electrode materials has been difficult due to their limited electrical conductivity and excessive agglomeration, making them poor electrochemical performers. To solve these problems and boost the performance, we synthesized a nanoporous carbon-based electrode with metallic cobalt nanoparticles and MXenes. The electrode material is a zeolite-imidazole framework (ZIF)-67-derived cobalt-based nanoporous carbon nanotube (CNT) composite produced via in situ growth on Ti3C2Tx MXene flakes by pyrolysis under inert conditions. In situ synthesized porous CNTs add porosity and interconnecting channels to the MXenes providing increased sheet ion transport and diffusion, improving the electrochemical performance. This lowered the charge resistance to 3.73 Ω and enhanced the MXene nanosheet Bode phase angle. In an aqueous acidic electrolyte, the MXene-nanoporous CNT composite exhibited a nominal capacitance of 1605 F/g and 94.5% charge retention after 5000 cycles. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
