Search

Infrared spectroscopy over a wide spectral range and at the highest resolving powers (R>70 000) has proved to be one of the leading technique to unveil the atmospheric composition of dozens of exoplanets. The recently upgraded spectrograph CRIRES instrument at the VLT (CRIRES+) was operative for a first Science Verification in September 2021 and its new capabilities in atmospheric characterisation were ready to be tested. We analysed transmission spectra of the Hot Saturn WASP-20b in the K-band (1981-2394 nm) acquired with CRIRES+, aiming at detecting the signature of H2O and CO. We used Principal Component Analysis to remove the dominant time-dependent contaminating sources such as telluric bands and the stellar spectrum and we extracted the planet spectrum by cross-correlating observations with 1D and 3D synthetic spectra, with no circulation included. We present the tentative detection of molecular absorption from water-vapour at S/N equal to 4.2 and 4.7 by using only-H2O 1D and 3D models, respectively. The peak of the CCF occurred at the same rest-frame velocity for both model types (Vrest=-1 $\pm$ 1 kms$^{-1}$), and at the same projected planet orbital velocity but with different error bands (1D model: KP=131$^{+18}_{-29}$ kms$^{-1}$; 3D: KP=131$^{+23}_{-39}$ kms$^{-1}$). Our results are in agreement with the one expected in literature (132.9 $\pm$ 2.7 kms$^{-1}$). Although sub-optimal observational conditions and issues with pipeline in calibrating and reducing our raw data set, we obtained the first tentative detection of water in the atmosphere of WASP-20b. We suggest a deeper analysis and additional observations to confirm our results and unveil the presence of CO., Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures, 2 tables. Aims. We present the first detailed analysis of the astrophysical parameters of the poorly studied Sco-Cen member HD 152384 and its circumstellar environment. Methods. We analyze newly obtained optical-near-IR XSHOOTER spectra, as well as archival TESS data, of HD 152384. In addition, we use literature photometric data to construct a detailed spectral energy distribution (SED) of the star. Results. The photospheric absorption lines in the spectrum of HD 152384 are characteristic of a A0 V star, for which we derive a stellar mass of 2.1 +/- 0.1 M_sun and a stellar age > 4.5 Myr. Superimposed on the photospheric absorption, the optical spectrum also displays double-peaked emission lines of Ca II, Fe I, Mg I and Si I, typical of circumstellar disks. Notably, all Hydrogen and Helium lines appear strictly in absorption. A toy model shows that the observed emission line profiles can be reproduced by emission from a compact (radius < 0.3 au) disk seen at an inclination of ~24 degrees. Further evidence for the presence of circumstellar material comes from the detection of a moderate infrared excess in the SED, similar to those found in extreme debris disk systems. Conclusions. We conclude that HD 152384 is surrounded by a tenuous circumstellar disk which, although rich in refractory elements, is highly depleted of volatile elements. To the best of our knowledge such a disk is unique within the group of young stars. However, it is reminiscent of the disks seen in some white dwarfs, which have been attributed to the disruption of rocky planets. The direct imaging of rocky exoplanets is one of the major science goals for upcoming large telescopes. The contrast requirement for imaging such planets is challenging. However, the mid-IR (InfraRed) regime provides the optimum contrast to directly detect the thermal signatures of exoplanets in our solar neighbourhood. We aim to exploit novel fast chopping techniques newly developed for astronomy with the aid of adaptive optics to look for thermal signatures of exoplanets around bright stars in the solar neighbourhood. We use the upgraded VISIR (Very Large Telescope Imager and Spectrometer for the mid-InfraRed) instrument with high contrast imaging (HCI) capability optimized for observations at 10~$\mu$m to look for exoplanets around five nearby ($d$ < 4 pc) stars. The instrument provides an improved signal-to-noise (S/N) by a factor of $\sim$4 in the N-band compared to standard VISIR for a given S/N and time. In this work we achieve a detection sensitivity of sub-mJy, which is sufficient to detect few Jupiter mass planets in nearby systems. Although no detections are made we achieve most sensitive limits within $<2''$ for all the observed targets compared to previous campaigns. For $\epsilon$ Indi A and $\epsilon$ Eri we achieve detection limits very close to the giant planets discovered by RV, with the limits on $\epsilon$ Indi A being the most sensitive to date. Our non-detection therefore supports an older age for $\epsilon$ Indi A. The results presented here show the promise for high contrast imaging and exoplanet detections in the mid-IR regime., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A

Mid-infrared imaging traces the sub-micron and micron sized dust grains in protoplanetary disks and it offers constraints on the geometrical properties of the disks and potential companions, particularly if those companions have circumplanetary disks. We use the VISIR instrument and its upgrade NEAR on the VLT to take new mid-infrared images of five (pre-)transition disks and one circumstellar disk with proposed planets and obtain the deepest resolved mid-infrared observations to date in order to put new constraints on the sizes of the emitting regions of the disks and the presence of possible companions. We derotate and stack the data to find the disk properties. Where available we compare the data to ProDiMo (Protoplanetary Disk Model) radiation thermo-chemical models to achieve a deeper understanding of the underlying physical processes within the disks. We apply the circularised PSF subtraction method to find upper limits on the fluxes of possible companions and model companions with circumplanetary disks. We resolve three of the six disks and calculate position angles, inclinations and (upper limits to) sizes of emission regions in the disks, improving upper limits on two of the unresolved disks. In all cases the majority of the mid-IR emission comes from small inner disks or the hot inner rims of outer disks. We refine the existing ProDiMo HD 100546 model SED fit in the mid-IR by increasing the PAH abundance relative to the ISM, adopting coronene as the representative PAH, and increase the outer cavity radius to 22.3 AU. We produce flux estimates for putative planetary-mass companions and circumplanetary disks, ruling out the presence of planetary-mass companions with $L > 0.0028 L_{\odot}$ for $a > 180$ AU in the HD 100546 system. Upper limits of 0.5 mJy-30 mJy are obtained at 8 $\mu$m-12 $\mu$m for potential companions in the different disks., Comment: Accepted in A&A

T Tauri has long been the prototypical young pre-main-sequence star. However, it has now been decomposed into a triple system with a complex disk and outflow geometry. We aim to measure the brightness of all three components of the T Tauri system (T Tau N, T Tau Sa, T Tau Sb) in the mid-infrared in order to obtain photometry around the $\sim 9.7~\mu m$ silicate feature. This allows us to study their variability and to investigate the distribution of dust and the geometry of circumstellar and circumbinary disks in this complex system. We observe T Tauri with the VLT/VISIR-NEAR instrument. With kernel phase interferometry post-processing of the data, and using the astrometric positions of all three components from VLT/SPHERE, we measure the three components' individual brightnesses (including the southern binary at an angular separation down to $\sim 0.2~\lambda/D$) and obtain their photometry. In order to validate our methods, we simulate and recover mock data of the T Tauri system using the observed reference point-spread function of HD 27639. We find that T Tau N is rather stable and shows weak silicate emission, while T Tau Sa is highly variable and shows prominent silicate absorption. T Tau Sb became significantly fainter compared to data from 2004 and 2006, suggesting increased extinction by dust. The precision of our photometry is limited by systematic errors, which is consistent with previous studies using kernel phase interferometry. Our results confirm the complex scenario of misaligned disks in the T Tauri system that had been observed previously, and they are in agreement with the recently observed dimming of T Tau Sb in the near-infrared. Direct imaging is a tried and tested method of detecting exoplanets in the near infrared, but has so far not been extended to longer wavelengths. New data at mid-IR wavelengths (8-20{\mu}m) canprovide additional constraints on planetary atmospheric models. We use the VISIR instrumenton the VLT to detect or set stringent limits on the 8.7{\mu}m flux of the four planets surrounding HR8799, and to search for additional companions. We use a novel circularised PSF subtractiontechnique to reduce the stellar signal and obtain instrument limited background levels andobtain optimal flux limits. The BT SETTL isochrones are then used to determine the resultingmass limits. We find flux limits between 0.7 and 3.3 mJy for the J8.9 flux of the differentplanets at better than5{\sigma}level and derive a new mass limit of 30 MJupfor any objects beyond40 AU. While this work has not detected planets in the HR 8799 system at 8.7{\mu}m, it has foundthat an instrument with the sensitivity of VISIR is sufficient to detect at least 4 known hotplanets around close stars, including\b{eta}Pictoris b (1700 K, 19 pc), with more than5{\sigma}certaintyin 10 hours of observing time in the mid-IR., Comment: Published in MNRAS, 5 pages, 5 figures

We report on the results of optical, near-infrared (NIR) and mid-infrared observations of the black hole X-ray binary candidate (BHB) MAXI J1535-571 during its 2017/2018 outburst. During the first part of the outburst (MJD 58004-58012), the source shows an optical-NIR spectrum that is consistent with an optically thin synchrotron power-law from a jet. After MJD 58015, however, the source faded considerably, the drop in flux being much more evident at lower frequencies. Before the fading, we measure a de-reddened flux density of $\gtrsim$100 mJy in the mid-infrared, making MAXI J1535-571 one of the brightest mid-infrared BHBs known so far. A significant softening of the X-ray spectrum is evident contemporaneous with the infrared fade. We interpret it as due to the suppression of the jet emission, similar to the accretion-ejection coupling seen in other BHBs. However, MAXI J1535-571 did not transition smoothly to the soft state, instead showing X-ray hardness deviations, associated with infrared flaring. We also present the first mid-IR variability study of a BHB on minute timescales, with a fractional rms variability of the light curves of $\sim 15-22 \%$, which is similar to that expected from the internal shock jet model, and much higher than the optical fractional rms ($\lesssim 7 \%$). These results represent an excellent case of multi-wavelength jet spectral-timing and demonstrate how rich, multi-wavelength time-resolved data of X-ray binaries over accretion state transitions can help refining models of the disk-jet connection and jet launching in these systems., Comment: 20 pages, 8 figures. Aims. CO ro-vibrational lines observed from Herbig group II discs are seen to be often broad while the same lines observed from group I discs are often narrow. This difference is not well understood. In this paper we explore the underlying cause for this difference and provide a pathway for a better understanding of the geometry and structure of the inner discs around Herbig Ae/Be stars. Methods. High-spectral-resolution infrared spectra of CO ro-vibrational emission from six Herbig Ae/Be candidate stars were taken with CRIRES (CRyogenic high-resolution InfraRed Echelle Spectrograph) at the VLT (Very Large Telescope). From these spectra, we produce individual and co-added CO ro-vibrational line profiles. We investigate line profile shape differences, and we explore the FWHM (Full Width Half Maximum) variations with J quantum number in the context of disc geometry. Furthermore, we put our new sources into the context of earlier observed sources to study a large sample. For comparison, we also investigate the FWHM variations with J of modelled CO ro-vibrational lines from two typical disc geometries produced with the thermo-chemical disc modelling code ProDiMo. Results. - abbreviated - Comparing dust and gas inner disc geometries (inferred by SED and CO ro-vibrational emission) for the expanded sample of observed Herbig discs, we find no clear correspondence between the SED groups of the sources and their inner CO radius. Conclusions. The FWHM versus J is a potential new gas diagnostic for the inner disc with e.g. a constant FWHM versus J indicating the presence of a large gas hole or gap. We present for the first time a direct comparison of multi-epoch (2001-2002 and 2012) CO ro-vibrational emission lines from HD163296. We find that both the line shapes and the FWHM (Full Width Half Maximum) differ between these two epochs. The FWHM of the median observed line profiles are 10-25 km/s larger in the earlier epoch, and confirmed double peaks are only present in high J lines from 2001-2002. The line wings of individual transitions are similar in the two epochs making an additional central component in the later epoch a likely explanation for the single peaks and the lower FWHM. Variations in NIR brightness have been reported and could be linked to the observed variations. Additionally, we use the thermo chemical disc code ProDiMo to compare for the first time the line shapes, peak separations, FWHM, and line fluxes, to those observed. The ProDiMo model reproduces the peak separations, and low and mid J line fluxes well. The FWHM however, are over predicted and high J line fluxes are under predicted. We propose that a variable non-Keplerian component of the CO ro-vibrational emission, such as a disc wind or an episodic accretion funnel, is causing the difference between the two data sets collected at different epochs, and between model and observations. Additional CO ro-vibrational line detections (with CRIRES/VLT or NIRSPEC/Keck) or [Ne II] line observations with VISIR/VLT could help to clarify the cause of the variability., Comment: 13 pages, 10 figures, 3 tables. The number of well-studied early-type pre-main-sequence objects is very limited, hampering the study of massive star formation from an observational point of view. Here, we present the results of VLT/FORS2 spectropolarimetric and VLT/X-shooter spectroscopic observations of two recently recognised candidate Herbig Be stars, PDS 27 and PDS 37. Through analysis of spectral lines and photometry, we find that these two objects are hot, 17500 $\pm$ 3500~K, have large radii, 17.0 $\pm$ 4.0 and 25.8 $\pm$ 5.0~${\rm R}_\odot$, and are very massive, 15.3 (+5.4, -4.4) and 21.1 (+11.0, -5.3)~M$_{\odot}$ for PDS 27 and PDS 37, respectively. This suggests that these two objects are very young in their evolution and may become O-type stars. Their youth is supported by their high accretion rates of the order of $10^{-3}$--$10^{-4.5}~{\rm M}_\odot$/yr. A change in linear polarisation across the absorption component of H$\alpha$ is detected in both objects. This change indicates that the circumstellar environment close to the star, at scales of several stellar radii, has a flattened structure, which we identify as an inner accretion disk. Strong variability is seen in both objects in many lines as further indication of an active circumstellar environment., Comment: 15 pages, 9 figures

Herbig Ae/Be stars span a key mass range that links low and high mass stars, and thus provide an ideal window from which to explore their formation. This paper presents VLT/X-Shooter spectra of 91 Herbig Ae/Be stars, HAeBes; the largest spectroscopic study of HAeBe accretion to date. A homogeneous approach to determining stellar parameters is undertaken for the majority of the sample. Measurements of the ultra-violet (UV) are modelled within the context of magnetospheric accretion, allowing a direct determination of mass accretion rates. Multiple correlations are observed across the sample between accretion and stellar properties: the youngest and often most massive stars are the strongest accretors, and there is an almost 1:1 relationship between the accretion luminosity and stellar luminosity. Despite these overall trends of increased accretion rates in HAeBes when compared to classical T Tauri stars, we also find noticeable differences in correlations when considering the Herbig Ae and Herbig Be subsets. This, combined with the difficulty in applying a magnetospheric accretion model to some of the Herbig Be stars, could suggest that another form of accretion may be occurring within the Herbig Be mass range., Comment: 29 pages, 19 figures, Accepted for publication in MNRAS

In the past few years, the study of exoplanets has evolved from being pure discovery, then being more exploratory in nature and finally becoming very quantitative. In particular, transmission spectroscopy now allows the study of exoplanetary atmospheres. Such studies rely heavily on space-based or large ground-based facilities, because one needs to perform time-resolved, high signal-to-noise spectroscopy. The very recent exchange of the prisms of the FORS2 atmospheric diffraction corrector on ESO's Very Large Telescope should allow us to reach higher data quality than was ever possible before. With FORS2, we have obtained the first optical ground-based transmission spectrum of WASP-19b, with 20 nm resolution in the 550--830 nm range. For this planet, the data set represents the highest resolution transmission spectrum obtained to date. We detect large deviations from planetary atmospheric models in the transmission spectrum redwards of 790 nm, indicating either additional sources of opacity not included in the current atmospheric models for WASP-19b or additional, unexplored sources of systematics. Nonetheless, this work shows the new potential of FORS2 for studying the atmospheres of exoplanets in greater detail than has been possible so far., Comment: 7 pages, 9 figures, 3 tables. For about three years, it was known that precision spectrophotometry with FORS2 suffered from systematic errors that made quantitative observations of planetary transits impossible. We identified the Longitudinal Atmospheric Dispersion Compensator (LADC) as the most likely culprit, and therefore engaged in a project to exchange the LADC prisms with the uncoated ones from FORS1. This led to a significant improvement in the depth of FORS2 zero points, a reduction in the systematic noise, and should make FORS2 again competitive for transmission spectroscopy of exoplanets., Comment: To appear in the March issue of the ESO Messenger

We study the emission and absorption of CO ro-vibrational lines in the spectra of intermediate mass pre-main-sequence stars with the aim to determine both the spatial distribution of the CO gas and its physical properties. We also aim to correlate CO emission properties with disk geometry. Using high-resolution spectra containing fundamental and first overtone CO ro-vibrational emission, observed with CRIRES on the VLT, we probe the physical properties of the circumstellar gas by studying its kinematics and excitation conditions. We detect and spectrally resolve CO fundamental ro-vibrational emission in 12 of the 13 stars observed, and in two cases in absorption. Keeping in mind that we studied a limited sample, we find that the physical properties and spatial distribution of the CO gas correlate with disk geometry. Flaring disks show highly excited CO fundamental emission up to v$_u$ = 5, while self-shadowed disks show CO emission that is not as highly excited. Rotational temperatures range between ~250-2000 K. The $^{13}$CO rotational temperatures are lower than those of $^{12}$CO. The vibrational temperatures in self-shadowed disks are similar to or slightly below the rotational temperatures, suggesting that thermal excitation or IR pumping is important in these lines. In flaring disks the vibrational temperatures reach as high as 6000 K, suggesting fluorescent pumping. Using a simple kinematic model we show that the CO inner radius of the emitting region is $\approx$10 au for flaring disks and $\leq$ 1 au for self-shadowed disks. HD 142527 is a young pre-main sequence star with properties indicative of the presence of a giant planet or/and a low-mass stellar companion. We have analyzed an X-Shooter/Very Large Telescope spectrum to provide accurate stellar parameters and accretion rate. The analysis of the spectrum, together with constraints provided by the SED fitting, the distance to the star (140 +- 20 pc) and the use of evolutionary tracks and isochrones, lead to the following set of parameters T_eff = 6550 +- 100 K, log g = 3.75 +- 0.10, L_*/L_sun = 16.3 +- 4.5, M_*/M_sun = 2.0 +- 0.3 and an age of 5.0 +- 1.5 Myr. This stellar age provides further constrains to the mass of the possible companion estimated by Biller et al. (2012), being in-between 0.20 and 0.35 M_sun. Stellar accretion rates obtained from UV Balmer excess modelling, optical photospheric line veiling, and from the correlations with several emission lines spanning from the UV to the near-IR, are consistent to each other. The mean value from all previous tracers is 2 (+- 1) x 10^-7 M_sun yr^-1, which is within the upper limit gas flow rate from the outer to the inner disk recently provided by Cassasus et al. (2013). This suggests that almost all gas transferred between both components of the disk is not trapped by the possible planet(s) in-between but fall onto the central star, although it is discussed how the gap flow rate could be larger than previously suggested. In addition, we provide evidence showing that the stellar accretion rate of HD 142527 has increased by a factor ~ 7 on a timescale of 2-5 years., Comment: Accepted in ApJ. 8 pages, 7 figures

We have studied the emission of CO ro-vibrational lines in the disc around the Herbig Be star HD100546 with the final goal of using these lines as a diagnostic to understand inner disc structure in the context of planet formation. High-resolution IR spectra of CO ro-vibrational emission at eight different position angles were taken with CRIRES at the VLT. From these spectra flux tables, CO ro-vibrational line profiles, and population diagrams were produced. We have investigated variations in the line profile shapes and line strengths as a function of slit position angle. We used the thermochemical disc modelling code ProDiMo based on the chemistry, radiation field, and temperature structure of a previously published model for HD100546. Comparing observations and the model, we investigated the possibility of disc asymmetries, the excitation mechanism (UV fluorescence), the geometry, and physical conditions of the inner disc. The observed CO ro-vibrational lines are largely emitted from the inner rim of the outer disc at 10-13 AU. The line shapes are similar for all v levels and line fluxes from all vibrational levels vary only within one order of magnitude. All line profile asymmetries and variations can be explained with a symmetric disc model to which a slit correction and pointing offset is applied. Because the angular size of the CO emitting region (10-13 AU) and the slit width are comparable the line profiles are very sensitive to the placing of the slit. The model reproduces the line shapes and the fluxes of the v=1-0 lines as well as the spatial extent of the CO ro-vibrational emission. It does not reproduce the observed band ratios of 0.5-0.2 with higher vibrational bands. We find that lower gas volume densities at the surface of the inner rim of the outer disc can make the fluorescence pumping more effcient and reproduce the observed band ratios., Comment: 20 pages, 21 figures

*Context The evolution of young massive protoplanetary disks toward planetary systems is expected to include the formation of gaps and the depletion of dust and gas. *Aims A special group of flaring disks around Herbig Ae/Be stars do not show prominent silicate emission features. We focus our attention on four key Herbig Ae/Be stars to understand the structural properties responsible for the absence of silicate feature emission. *Methods We investigate Q- and N-band images taken with Subaru/COMICS, Gemini South/T-ReCS and VLT/VISIR. Our radiative transfer modeling solutions require a separation of inner- and outer- disks by a large gap. From this we characterize the radial density structure of dust and PAHs in the disk. *Results The inner edge of the outer disk has a high surface brightness and a typical temperature between ~100-150 K and therefore dominates the emission in the Q-band. We derive radii of the inner edge of the outer disk of 34, 23, 30 and 63 AU for HD97048, HD169142, HD135344B and Oph IRS 48 respectively. For HD97048 this is the first detection of a disk gap. The continuum emission in the N-band is not due to emission in the wings of PAHs. This continuum emission can be due to VSGs or to thermal emission from the inner disk. We find that PAH emission is not always dominated by PAHs on the surface of the outer disk. *Conclusions. The absence of silicate emission features is due to the presence of large gaps in the critical temperature regime. Many, if not all Herbig disks with Spectral Energy Distribution (SED) classification `group I' are disks with large gaps and can be characterized as (pre-) transitional. An evolutionary path from the observed group I to the observed group II sources seems no longer likely. Instead, both might derive from a common ancestor., Comment: 20 pages, 42 Figures

We present new imaging and spectroscopic data of the young Herbig star HD 144432 A, which was known to be a binary star with a separation of 1.47 arcsec. High-resolution NIR imaging data obtained with NACO at the VLT reveal that HD 144432 B itself is a close binary pair with a separation of 0.1 arcsec. High-resolution optical spectra, acquired with FEROS at the 2.2m MPG/ESO telescope in La Silla, of the primary star and its co-moving companions were used to determine their main stellar parameters such as effective temperature, surface gravity, radial velocity, and projected rotational velocity by fitting synthetic spectra to the observed stellar spectra. The two companions, HD 144432 B and HD 144432 C, are identified as low-mass T Tauri stars of spectral type K7V and M1V, respectively. From the position in the HRD the triple system appears to be co-eval with a system age of 6+/-3 Myr., Comment: Accepted for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysics, 4 pages, 4 figures

We report on a sensitive search for H2 1-0 S(1), 1-0 S(0) and 2-1 S(1) ro-vibrational emission at 2.12, 2.22 and 2.25 micron in a sample of 15 Herbig Ae/Be stars employing CRIRES, the ESO-VLT near-infrared high-resolution spectrograph, at R~90,000. We detect the H2 1-0 S(1) line toward HD 100546 and HD 97048. In the other 13 targets, the line is not detected. The H2 1-0 S(0) and 2-1 S(1) lines are undetected in all sources. This is the first detection of near-IR H2 emission in HD 100546. The H2 1-0 S(1) lines observed in HD 100546 and HD 97048 are observed at a velocity consistent with the rest velocity of both stars, suggesting that they are produced in the circumstellar disk. In HD 97048, the emission is spatially resolved and it is observed to extend at least up to 200 AU. We report an increase of one order of magnitude in the H2 1-0 S(1) line flux with respect to previous measurements taken in 2003 for this star, which suggests line variability. In HD 100546 the emission is tentatively spatially resolved and may extend at least up to 50 AU. Modeling of the H2 1-0 S(1) line profiles and their spatial extent with flat keplerian disks shows that most of the emission is produced at a radius >5 AU. Upper limits to the H2 1-0 S(0)/ 1-0 S(1) and H2 2-1 S(1)/1-0 S(1) line ratios in HD 97048 are consistent with H2 gas at T>2000 K and suggest that the emission observed may be produced by X-ray excitation. The upper limits for the line ratios for HD 100546 are inconclusive. Because the H2 emission is located at large radii, for both sources a thermal emission scenario (i.e., gas heated by collisions with dust) is implausible. We argue that the observation of H2 emission at large radii may be indicative of an extended disk atmosphere at radii >5 AU. In this paper we present mid-infrared spectra of a comprehensive set of Herbig Ae/Be stars observed with the Spitzer Space Telescope. The signal-to-noise ratio of these spectra is very high, ranging between about a hundred and several hundreds. During the analysis of these data we tested the validity of standard protoplanetary dust models and studied grain growth and crystal formation. On the basis of the analyzed spectra, the major constituents of protoplanetary dust around Herbig Ae/Be stars are amorphous silicates with olivine and pyroxene stoichiometry, crystalline forsterite and enstatite and silica. No other solid state features, indicating other abundant dust species, are present in the Spitzer spectra. Deviations of the synthetic spectra from the observations are most likely related to grain shape effects and uncertainties in the iron content of the dust grains. Our analysis revealed that larger grains are more abundant in the disk atmosphere of flatter disks than in that of flared disks, indicating that grain growth and sedimentation decrease the disk flaring. We did not find, however, correlations between the value of crystallinity and any of the investigated system parameters. Our analysis shows that enstatite is more concentrated toward the warm inner disk than forsterite, in contrast to predictions of equilibrium condensation models. None of the three crystal formation mechanisms proposed so far can alone explain all our findings. The chemistry of astronomical hydrocarbons, responsible for the well-known infrared emission features detected in a wide variety of targets, remains enigmatic. Here we focus on the group of young intermediate-mass Herbig Ae stars. We have analyzed the aliphatic and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) emission features in the infrared spectra of a sample of 53 Herbig Ae stars, obtained with the Infrared Spectrograph aboard the Spitzer Space Telescope. We confirm that the PAH-to-stellar luminosity ratio is higher in targets with a flared dust disk. However, a few sources with a flattened dust disk still show relatively strong PAH emission. Since PAH molecules trace the gas disk, this indicates that gas disks may still be flared, while the dust disk has settled due to grain growth. There are indications that the strength of the 11.3 um feature also depends on dust disk structure, with flattened disks being less bright in this feature. We confirm that the CC bond features at 6.2 and 7.8 um shift to redder wavelengths with decreasing stellar effective temperature. Moreover, we show that this redshift is accompanied by a relative increase of aliphatic CH emission and a decrease of the aromatic 8.6 um CH feature strength. Cool stars in our sample are surrounded by hydrocarbons with a high aliphatic/aromatic CH ratio and a low aromatic CH/CC ratio, and vice versa for the hot stars. We conclude that, while the overall hydrocarbon emission strength depends on the dust disk's geometry, the relative differences seen in the IR emission features in disks around Herbig Ae stars are mainly due to chemical differences of the hydrocarbon molecules induced by the stellar UV field. We present FEROS high-resolution (R~45000) optical spectroscopy of 34 Herbig Ae/Be star candidates with previously unknown or poorly constrained spectral types. Within the sample, 16 sources are positionally coincident with nearby (d<250 pc) star-forming regions (SFRs). All the candidates have IR excess. We determine the spectral type and luminosity class of the sources, derive their radial and rotational velocities, and constrain their distances employing spectroscopic parallaxes. We confirm 13 sources as Herbig Ae/Be stars and find one classical T Tauri star. Three sources are emission line early-type giants and may be Herbig Ae/Be stars. One source is a main-sequence A-type star. Fourteen sources are post-main-sequence giant and supergiant stars. Two sources are extreme emission-line stars. Most of the sources appear to be background stars at distances over 700 pc. We show that high-resolution optical spectroscopy is a crucial tool for distinguishing young stars from post-main sequence stars in samples taken from emission-line star catalogs based on low-resolution spectroscopy. Within the sample, 3 young stars (CD-38 4380, Hen 3-1145, and HD 145718) and one early-type luminosity class III giant with emission lines (Hen 3-416) are at distances closer than 300 pc and are positionally coincident with a nearby SFR. These 4 sources are likely to be nearby young stars and are interesting for follow-up observations at high-angular resolution. Furthermore, seven confirmed Herbig Ae/Be stars at d>700 pc (Hen 2-80, Hen 3-1121 N&S, HD 313571, MWC 953, WRAY 15-1435, and Th 17-35) are inside or close (<5') to regions with extended 8 micron continuum emission and in their 20' vicinity have astronomical sources characteristic of SFRs. These 7 sources are likely to be members of SFRs. Context. Based on the far infrared excess the Herbig class of stars is divided into a group with flaring circumstellar disks (group I) and a group with flat circumstellar disks (group II). Dust sedimentation is generally proposed as an evolution mechanism to transform flaring disks into flat disks. Theory predicts that during this process the disks preserve their gas content, however observations of group II Herbig Ae stars demonstrate a lack of gas. Aims. We map the spatial distribution of the gas and dust around the group II Herbig Ae star HD 95881. Methods. We analyze optical photometry, Q-band imaging, infrared spectroscopy, and K and N-band interferometric spectroscopy. We use a Monte Carlo radiative transfer code to create a model for the density and temperature structure which quite accurately reproduces all the observables. Results. We derive a consistent picture in which the disk consists of a thick puffed up inner rim and an outer region which has a flaring gas surface and is relatively void of 'visible' dust grains. Context. X-shooter is the first second-generation instrument to become operative at the ESO Very Large Telescope (VLT). It is a broad-band medium-resolution spectrograph designed with gamma-ray burst (GRB) afterglow spectroscopy as one of its main science drivers. Aims. During the first commissioning night on sky with the instrument fully assembled, X-shooter observed the afterglow of GRB 090313 as a demonstration of the instrument's capabilities. Methods. GRB 090313 was observed almost two days after the burst onset, when the object had already faded to R~21.6. Furthermore, the 90% illuminated Moon was just 30 degrees away from the field. In spite of the adverse conditions, we obtained a spectrum that, for the first time in GRB research, covers simultaneously the range from 5700 to 23000 Angstroms. Results. The spectrum shows multiple absorption features at a redshift of 3.3736, the redshift of the GRB. These features are composed of 3 components with different ionisation levels and velocities. Some of the features have never been observed before in a GRB at such a high redshift. Furthermore, we detect two intervening systems at redshifts of 1.8005 and 1.9597. Conclusions. These results demonstrate the potential of X-shooter in the GRB field, as it was capable of observing a GRB down to a magnitude limit that would include 72% of long GRB afterglows 2 hours after the burst onset. Coupled with the rapid response mode available at VLT, allowing reaction times of just a few minutes, X-shooter constitutes an important leap forward on medium resolution spectroscopic studies of GRBs, their host galaxies and intervening systems, probing the early history of the Universe., Comment: Accepted for publication in Astronomy and Astrophysics on the 20 January. 8 pages, 5 figures, 4 tables

We present initial result of a large spectroscopic survey aimed at measuring the timescale of mass accretion in young, pre-main-sequence stars in the spectral type range K0 - M5. Using multi-object spectroscopy with VIMOS at the VLT we identified the fraction of accreting stars in a number of young stellar clusters and associations of ages between 1 - 50 Myr. The fraction of accreting stars decreases from ~60% at 1.5 - 2 Myr to ~2% at 10 Myr. No accreting stars are found after 10 Myr at a sensitivity limit of $10^{-11}$ Msun yr-1. We compared the fraction of stars showing ongoing accretion (f_acc) to the fraction of stars with near-to-mid infrared excess (f_IRAC). In most cases we find f_acc < f_IRAC, i.e., mass accretion appears to cease (or drop below detectable level) earlier than the dust is dissipated in the inner disk. At 5 Myr, 95% of the stellar population has stopped accreting material at a rate of > 10^{-11} Msun yr-1, while ~20% of the stars show near-infrared excess emission. Assuming an exponential decay, we measure a mass accretion timescale (t_acc) of 2.3 Myr, compared to a near-to-mid infrared excess timescale (t_IRAC) of 2.9 Myr. Planet formation, and/or migration, in the inner disk might be a viable mechanism to halt further accretion onto the central star on such a short timescale., Comment: Accepted for publication

HD 100453 has an IR spectral energy distribution (SED) which can be fit with a power-law plus a blackbody. Previous analysis of the SED suggests that the system is a young Herbig Ae star with a gas-rich, flared disk. We reexamine the evolutionary state of the HD 100453 system by refining its age (based on a candidate low-mass companion) and by examining limits on the disk extent, mass accretion rate, and gas content of the disk environment. We confirm that HD 100453B is a common proper motion companion to HD 100453A, with a spectral type of M4.0V - M4.5V, and derive an age of 10 +/- 2 Myr. We find no evidence of mass accretion onto the star. Chandra ACIS-S imagery shows that the Herbig Ae star has L_X/L_Bol and an X-ray spectrum similar to non-accreting Beta Pic Moving Group early F stars. Moreover, the disk lacks the conspicuous Fe II emission and excess FUV continuum seen in spectra of actively accreting Herbig Ae stars, and from the FUV continuum, we find the accretion rate is < 1.4x10^-9 M_Sun yr^-1. A sensitive upper limit to the CO J = 3-2 intensity indicates that the gas in the outer disk is likely optically thin. Assuming a [CO]/[H2] abundance of 1x10^-4 and a depletion factor of 10^3, we find that the mass of cold molecular gas is less than ~0.33 M_J and that the gas-to-dust ratio is no more than ~4:1 in the outer disk. The combination of a high fractional IR excess luminosity, a relatively old age, an absence of accretion signatures, and an absence of detectable circumstellar molecular gas suggests that the HD 100453 system is in an unusual state of evolution between a gas-rich protoplanetary disk and a gas-poor debris disk., Comment: 24 pages, 10 figures, Accepted in ApJ 2/27/09

We investigate the physical properties and spatial distribution of Carbon Monoxide (CO) gas in the disks around the Herbig Ae/Be stars HD 97048 and HD 100546. Using high-spectral-resolution 4.588-4.715 $\mu$m spectra containing fundamental CO emission taken with CRIRES on the VLT, we probe the circumstellar gas and model the kinematics of the emission lines. By using spectro-astrometry on the spatially resolved targets, we constrain the physical size of the emitting regions in the disks. We resolve, spectrally and spatially, the emission of the $^{13}$CO v(1-0) vibrational band and the $^{12}$CO $v=1-0, v=2-1, v=3-2$ and $v=4-3$ vibrational bands in both targets, as well as the $^{12}$CO $v=5-4$ band in HD 100546. Modeling of the CO emission with a homogeneous disk in Keplerian motion, yields a best fit with an inner and outer radius of the CO emitting region of 11 and $\geq$ 100 AU for HD 97048. HD 100546 is not fit well with our model, but we derive a lower limit on the inner radius of 8 AU. The fact that gaseous [OI] emission was previously detected in both targets at significantly smaller radii suggests that CO may be effectively destroyed at small radii in the surface layers of these disks, Comment: v2: Letter format has been changed to Paper format; Change in the focus of the paper towards CO depletion; Major changes in text; Change of title. [Abridged] We present the first direct comparison of the distribution of the gas, as traced by the [OI] 6300 AA emission, and the dust, as traced by the 10 micron emission, in the protoplanetary disk around three intermediate-mass stars: HD 101412, HD 135344 B and HD 179218. N-band visibilities were obtained with VLTI/MIDI. Simple geometrical models are used to compare the dust emission to high-resolution optical spectra in the 6300 AA [OI] line of the same targets. The disks around HD 101412 and HD 135344 B appear strongly flared in the gas, but self-shadowed in the dust beyond ~ 2 AU. In both systems, the 10 micron emission is rather compact (< 2 AU) while the [OI] brightness profile shows a double peaked structure. The inner peak is strongest and is consistent with the location of the dust, the outer peak is fainter and is located at 5-10 AU. Spatially extended PAH emission is found in both disks. The disk around HD 179218 is flared in the dust. The 10 micron emission emerges from a double ring-like structure with the first ring peaking at ~ 1 AU and the second at ~ 20 AU. No dust emission is detected between ~ 3 -- 15 AU. The oxygen emission seems also to come from a flared structure, however, the bulk of this emission is produced between ~ 1 -- 10 AU. This could indicate a lack of gas in the outer disk or could be due to chemical effects which reduce the abundance of OH -- the parent molecule of the observed [OI] emission -- further away from the star. The three systems, HD 179218, HD 135344 B and HD 101412, may form an evolutionary sequence: the disk initially flared becomes flat under the combined action of gas-dust decoupling, grain growth and dust settling., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A

MWC 297 is a young massive nearby B[e] star. The central star has a large projected rotational velocity of 350 km/s. Despite the wealth of published observations, the nature of this object and its dust-rich surroundings is not well understood. With the present paper, we shed light on the geometrical structure of the circumstellar matter which produces the near- to mid-infrared flux excess, and construct an overall image of the source's appearance and evolutionary status. The H-, K- and N-band brightness distribution of MWC 297 is probed with the ESO interferometric spectrographs AMBER and MIDI. We have obtained visibility measurements on 3 AMBER and 12 MIDI baselines, covering a wide range of spatial frequencies. We have reconstructed the brightness distribution in H, K and N with a geometric model consisting of three Gaussian disks with different extent and brightness temperature. This model can account for the entire near- to mid-IR emission of MWC 297. The near- and mid-IR emission, including the silicate emission at 10 micron, emanates from a very compact region (FWHM < 1.5 AU) around the central star. We argue that the circumstellar matter in the MWC 297 system is organized in a disk, seen under moderate (i < 40 deg) inclination. The disk displays no inner emission-free gap at the resolution of our interferometric data. The low inclination of the disk implies that the actual rotational velocity of the star exceeds its critical velocity. We present high spectral resolution optical spectra of three young intermediate mass stars, in all of which we spectrally resolve the 6300 Angstrom [OI] emission line. Two of these have a double peaked line profile. We fit these data with a simple model of the [OI] emission caused by photo-dissociation of OH molecules in the upper layer of a circumstellar disk by stellar UV radiation and thus translate the Doppler broadened [OI] emission profile into an amount of emission as a function of distance from the central star. The resulting spectra are in agreement with the expected disk shapes as derived from their spectral energy distribution. We find evidence for shadowing by an inner rim in the disk surrounding HD101412 and see a flaring disk structure in HD179218 while the [OI] spectrum of HD135344 is more complex. The [OI] emission starts for all three targets at velocities corresponding to their dust sublimation radius and extends up to radii of 10 -- 90 AU. We observed the Herbig Ae/Be stars UX Ori, HD 34282, HD 100453, HD 101412, HD 104237 and HD 142666, and the T Tauri star HD 319139 and searched for H2 0-0 S(2) emission at 12.278 micron and H2 0-0 S(1) emission at 17.035 micron with VISIR, ESO-VLT's high-resolution MIR spectrograph. None of the sources present evidence for H2 emission. Stringent 3sigma upper limits to the integrated line fluxes and the mass of optically thin warm gas in the disks are derived. The disks contain less than a few tenths of Jupiter mass of optically thin H2 gas at 150 K at most, and less than a few Earth masses of optically thin H2 gas at 300 K and higher temperatures. We compare our results to a Chiang and Goldreich (1997, CG97) two-layer disk model. The upper limits to the disk's optically thin warm gas mass are smaller than the amount of warm gas in the interior layer of the disk, but they are much larger than the amount of molecular gas in the surface layer. We present a calculation of the expected thermal H2 emission from optically thick disks, assuming a CG97 disk structure, a gas-to-dust ratio of 100 and Tgas = Tdust. The expected H2 thermal emission fluxes from typical disks around Herbig Ae/Be stars (10^-16 to 10^-17 erg/s/cm2 at 140 pc) are much lower than the detection limits of our observations (5*10^-15 erg/s/cm2). H2 emission levels are very sensitive to departures from the thermal coupling between the molecular gas and dust. Additional sources of heating of gas in the disk's surface layer could have a major impact on the expected H2 disk emission. We report on the first results of a search for H2 emission from protoplanetary disks using CRIRES, ESO's new VLT high resolution NIR spectrograph. We observed the CTTS LkHa 264 and the debris disk 49 Cet, and searched for the 1-0 S(1), 1-0 S(0) and 2-1 S(1) H2 emission lines. The H2 line at 2.1218 micron is detected in LkHa 264. Our CRIRES spectra reveal the previously observed but not detected H2 line at 2.2233 micron in LkHa 264. An upper limit on the 2-1 S(1) H2 line flux in LkHalpha 264 is derived. These observations are the first simultaneous detection of 1-0 S(1) and 1-0 S(0) H2 emission from a protoplanetary disk. 49 Cet does not exhibit H2 emission in any of the three observed lines. There are a few lunar masses of optically thin hot H2 in the inner disk (~0.1 AU) of LkHa 264, and less than a tenth of a lunar mass of hot H2 in the inner disk of 49 Cet. The measured 1-0 S(0)/1-0 S(1) and 2-1 S(1)/1-0 S(1) line ratios in LkHa 264 indicate that the H2 emitting gas is at T<1500 K and that the H2 is most likely thermally excited by UV photons. Modeling of the shape of the line suggests that the disk should be seen close to face-on (i<35). A comparative analysis of the physical properties of CTTS in which the H2 1-0 S(1) line has been detected and non-detected indicates that the presence of H2 emission is correlated with the magnitude of the UV excess and the strength of the Halpha line. The lack of H2 emission in the NIR spectra of 49 Cet and the absence of Halpha emission suggest that the gas in the inner disk of 49 Cet has dissipated. Aims: The recent outburst of the young eruptive star V1647 Orionis has produced a spectacular appearance of a new reflection nebula in Orion (McNeil's nebula). We present an optical/near infrared investigation of McNeil's nebula. This analysis is aimed at determining the morphology, temporal evolution and nature of the nebula and its connection to the outburst. Method: We performed multi epoch B, V, R, I, z, and K imaging of McNeil's nebula and V1647 Ori as well as K_S imaging polarimetry. The multiband imaging allows us to reconstruct the extinction map inside the nebula. Through polarimetric observations we attempt to disentangle the emission from the nebula from that of the accretion disk around V1647 Ori. We also attempt to resolve the small spatial scale structure of the illuminating source. Results: The energy distribution and temporal evolution of McNeil's nebula mimic that of the illuminating source. The extinction map reveals a region of higher extinction in the direction of V1647 Ori. Excluding foreground extionction, the optical extinction due to McNeil's nebula in the direction of V1647 Ori is A_V ~ 6.5 mag. The polarimetric measurement shows a compact high polarization emission around V1647 Ori. The percentage of K_S band linear polarization goes from 10 -- 20 %. The vectors are all well aligned with a position angle of 90 +/- 9 degree East of North. This may correspond to the orientation of a possible accretion disk around V1647 Ori. These findings suggest that the appearance of McNeil's nebula is due to reflection of light by pre-existing material in the surroundings of V1647 Ori. The occurrence of new FU Orionis-like objects is fundamental to understand the outburst mechanism in young stars and their role in star formation and disk evolution. Our work is aimed at investigating the properties of the recent outburst of V1647 Ori. Using optical and mid infrared long slit spectroscopy we monitored V1647 Ori in outburst between February 2004 and January 2006. The optical spectrum is characterized by Halpha and Hbeta in P-Cygni profile and by many weak FeI and FeII emission lines. Short timescale variability was measured in the continuum and line emission. On January 2006 we detected for the first time forbidden emission lines ([OI], [SII] and [FeII]). These lines are likely produced by an Herbig-Haro object driven by V1647 Ori. The mid infrared the spectrum of V1647 Ori is flat and featureless at all epochs. The SED changed drastically: the source was much redder in the early outburst than in the final phase. The magnitude rise and the SED of V1647 Ori resembles that of a FUor while the duration and recurrence of the outburst resemble that of a EXor. The optical spectrum is clearly distinct from either the absorption line spectrum of a FUor or the T Tauri-like spectrum of an EXor. Our data are consistent with a disk instability event which led to an increase of the mass accretion rate. The data also suggest the presence of a circumstellar envelope around the star+disk system. The peculiar N band spectrum might be explained by dust sublimation in the outer layers of the disk. The presence of the envelope and the outburst statistics suggest that these instability events occur only in a specific stage of a Class I source (e.g. in the transition phase to an optically visible star surrounded by a protoplanetary disk). We present VLT-FORS2 optical (5700 - 9400 A) spectroscopy of close (r < 1.5'') companions to three nearby (d < 200 pc) Herbig Ae/Be stars (HD 144432, HD 150193, KK Oph) and one T Tauri star (S CrA). We report the detection of Li I (6707 A) in absorption and emission lines (Halpha, Ca II triplet) in the spectra of the companions. Our observations strongly suggest that the companions are physically associated pre-main-sequence stars. The spectral type derived for the companions is K5Ve for HD 144432 B, F9Ve for HD 150193 B, and G6Ve for KK Oph B. S CrA A and B were observed simultaneously. The spatially resolved spectra indicate that S CrA A (primary, north) is a G star and that S CrA B (secondary, south) is a K star. Using photometry from the literature and estimations of the R and I magnitude derived from the spectra, we localized primaries and companions in the HR diagram, derived their masses and assuming coevality constrained the age of the systems. KK Oph B (7 Myr) and S CrA B (2 Myr) are actively accreting T Tauri stars and are very likely surrounded by disks. HD 150193 B (10 Myr) and HD 144432 B (8 Myr) are weak-line T Tauri stars. Three of the four systems studied (HD 144432, HD 150193, KK Oph) have ages > 7 Myr. These systems retained their disks for a longer time than typical of a young star. We have carried out a survey of 60 Herbig Ae/Be stars in the 3 micron wavelength region in search for the rare spectral features at 3.43 and 3.53 micron. These features have been attributed to the presence of large, hot, hydrogen-terminated nanodiamonds. Only two Herbig Ae/Be stars, HD 97048 and Elias 3-1 are known to display both these features. We have obtained medium-resolution spectra (R ~2500) with the ESO near-IR instrument ISAAC in the 3.15-3.65 micron range. In our sample, no new examples of sources with prominent nanodiamond features in their 3 micron spectra were discovered (detection rate less than 4%). We report tentative 3.53 micron detections in V921 Sco (=CD-42.11721), HD 163296 and T CrA. The sources which display the nanodiamond features are not exceptional in the group of Herbig stars with respect to disk properties, stellar characteristics, or disk and stellar activity. Moreover, the nanodiamond sources are very different from each other in terms of these parameters. We do not find evidence for a recent supernova in the vicinity of any of the nanodiamond sources. We have analyzed the PAH 3.3 micron feature and the Pfund delta hydrogen emission line, two other spectral features which occur in the 3 micron wavelength range. We reinforce the conclusion of previous authors that flared-disk systems display significantly more PAH emission than self-shadowed-disk sources. The Pf delta line detection rate is higher in self-shadowed-disk sources than in the flared-disk systems. We discuss the possible origin and paucity of the (nano)diamond features in Herbig stars. Different creation mechanisms have been proposed in the literature, amongst others in-situ and supernova-induced formation. Aims. We intend to spatially and spectrally resolve the [O I] emission region in two nearby Herbig stars. Methods. We present high-resolution (R = 80,000) VLT/UVES echelle spectra of the [O I] 6300A line in the Herbig Ae/Be stars HD 97048 and HD 100546. Apart from the spectral signature, also the spatial extent of the [O I] emission region is investigated. For both stars, we have obtained spectra with the slit positioned at different position angles on the sky. Results. The [O I] emission region of HD 100546 appears to be coinciding with the dust disk, its major axis located at 150+/-11 degrees east of north. The SE part of the disk moves towards the observer, while the NW side is redshifted. The [O I] emission region rotates counterclockwise around the central star. For HD 97048, the position angle of the emission region is 160+/-19 degrees east of north, which is the first determination of this angle in the literature. The southern parts of the disk are blueshifted, the northern side moves away from us. Our data support the idea that a gap is present at 10AU in the disk of HD 100546. Such a gap is likely planet-induced. We estimate the mass and orbital radius of this hypothetical companion responsible for this gap to be 20 Jupiter masses and 6.5 AU respectively. Conclusions. Based on temporal changes in the [O I] line profile, we conclude that inhomogeneities are present in the [O I] emission region of HD 100546. These ``clumps'' could be in resonance with the suggested companion, orbiting the central star in about 11 yr. If confirmed, these observations could point to the existence of an object straddling the line between giant planet and brown dwarf in a system as young as 10 million years., Comment: 13 pages, 8 figures. We present diffraction-limited images in the 11.3 micron PAH band and in the continuum at 11.9 microns of the S287B star forming region obtained with the newly commissioned mid-infrared imager/spectrometer VISIR at the VLT. In both filters five point-like sources are detected, of which at least one has a spectral energy distribution reminiscent of a Lada Class I source. We also report on the discovery of a new Herbig Ae star in this region. It is particularly striking that the brightest mid-infrared source in this region has not been detected at shorter wavelengths; it is a good candidate to be the driving source of the bipolar molecular outflow and optical reflection nebulosity previously reported in S287B., Comment: Accepted by A&A Letters

We present spectroscopic observations of a large sample of Herbig Ae stars in the 10 micrometer spectral region. We perform compositional fits of the spectra based on properties of homogeneous as well as inhomogeneous spherical particles, and derive the mineralogy and typical grain sizes of the dust responsible for the 10 $\mu$m emission. Several trends are reported that can constrain theoretical models of dust processing in these systems: i) none of the sources consists of fully pristine dust comparable to that found in the interstellar medium, ii) all sources with a high fraction of crystalline silicates are dominated by large grains, iii) the disks around more massive stars (M >~ 2.5 M_sun, L >~ 60 L_sun) have a higher fraction of crystalline silicates than those around lower mass stars, iv) in the subset of lower mass stars (M <~ 2.5 M_sun) there is no correlation between stellar parameters and the derived crystallinity of the dust. The correlation between the shape and strength of the 10 micron silicate feature reported by van Boekel et al. (2003) is reconfirmed with this larger sample. The evidence presented in this paper is combined with that of other studies to present a likely scenario of dust processing in Herbig Ae systems. We conclude that the present data favour a scenario in which the crystalline silicates are produced in the innermost regions of the disk, close to the star, and transported outward to the regions where they can be detected by means of 10 micron spectroscopy. Additionally, we conclude that the final crystallinity of these disks is reached very soon after active accretion has stopped., Comment: 22 pages, 14 figures, accepted for publication in A&A. We present the results of medium-resolution spectroscopy of five nearby Herbig Ae/Be stars at 4.7 micron: UX Ori, HD 34282, HD 50138, V380 Ori, HK Ori. The goal was to search for CO fundamental ro-vibrational emission. None of the targets show CO features, either in absorption nor in emission. We derive a 5sigma upper limit of < 10^-12 cm^-2 to the column density of hot CO (T ~ 1500 K) in the sources. These upper limits are considerably lower than the values of Herbig Ae/Be stars for which warm and hot CO emission has been reported.The non-detection of CO v=1-0 emission in these five targets suggest that Herbig Ae/Be stars are not a homogeneous group with respect to the structure of the gaseous disk and/or the amount of CO in the inner 50 AU of their disks., Comment: 6 pages, 1 figure, accepted by A&A

The vast majority of the stars in our sample show narrow (FWHM < 100 km/s) emission lines, centered on the stellar radial velocity. In only three sources is the feature much broader (~400 km/s), and strongly blueshifted (-200 km/s) compared to the stellar radial velocity. Some stars in our sample show double-peaked lines profiles, with peak-to-peak separations of ~10 km/s. The presence and strength of the [O I] line emission appears to be correlated with the far-infrared energy distribution of each source: stars with a strong excess at 60 micron have in general stronger [O I] emission than stars with weaker 60 micron excesses. We interpret these narrow [O I] 6300A line profiles as arising in the surface layers of the protoplanetary disks surrounding Herbig Ae/Be stars. A simple model for [O I] 6300A line emission due to the photodissociation of OH molecules shows that our results are in quantitative agreement with that expected from the emission of a flared disk if the fractional OH abundance is ~5 x 10^{-7}., Comment: 22 pages, 26 figures, A&A accepted (21/02/2005)

We have calculated the (sub-)mm spectral indices of 26 Herbig Ae/Be stars, for which we can determine the infrared spectral energy distribution (SED). We find a clear correlation between the strength of the ratio of the near- to mid-infrared excess of these sources, and the slope of the (sub-)mm energy distribution. Based on earlier multi-dimensional modeling of disks around Herbig Ae stars, we interpret this as a correlation between the geometry of the disk (flared or self-shadowed) and the size of the grains: self-shadowed disks have, on average, larger grains than their flared counterparts. The detection and characterization of accretion processes in the disks surrounding young stars may be directly relevant to studies of planet formation. Especially the study of systems with very low accretion rates (<< 10^{-10} M_sun yr^{-1}) is important, since at those rates radial mixing becomes inefficient and disk material will have to be dissipated into larger bodies at its present location. In these proceedings, we compare the different methods of tracing accretion onto Herbig Ae/Be stars and conclude that high-resolution infrared spectroscopy is currently the only reliable method that offers the required sensitivity to shed light on this problem., Comment: To appear in proc. We report on a recent event in which, after more than a decade of slowly fading, the visual brightness of the massive young binary Z CMa suddenly started to rise by about 1 magnitude in December 1999, followed by a rapid decline to its previous brightness over the next six months. This behaviour is similar to that exhibited by this system around its eruption in February 1987. A comparison of the intrinsic luminosities of the system with recent evolutionary calculations shows that Z CMa may consist of a 16 M_sun B0 IIIe primary star and a ~ 3 M_sun FUOr secondary with a common age of ~ 3 x 10^5 yr. We also compare new high-resolution spectra obtained in Jan. and Feb. 2000, during the recent rise in brightness, with archive data from 1991 and 1996. The spectra are rich in emission lines, which originate from the envelope of the early B-type primary star. The strength of these emission lines increased strongly with the brightness of Z CMa. We interpret the collected spectral data in terms of an accretion disc with atmosphere around the Herbig B0e component of Z CMa, which has expanded during the outbursts of 1987 and 2000. A high resolution profile of the 6300 A [O I] emission line, obtained by us in March 2002 shows an increase in flux and a prominent blue shoulder to the feature extending to ~ -700 km/s, which was much fainter in the pre-outburst spectra. We propose that this change in profile is a result of a strong change in the collimation of a jet, as a result of the outburst at the start of this century., Comment: 22 pages, 12 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

The southern emission-line star HD 144432 has received considerable attention due to its relative brightness (V ~ 8.17), its late spectral type (late A-type or perhaps early F) and its relative isolation from a bona-fide active star formation region. We present new imaging and spectroscopic data of this star, which in the past has been classified as both evolved (post-AGB) object and an isolated Herbig Ae/Be star. We confirm the presence of a faint companion source located 1.4 arcseconds north, which appears physically associated with HD 144432. New infrared spectroscopy reveals this companion to be a late-type (early-mid K) star, devoid of any emission lines. Furthermore, we confirm the pre-main sequence nature of this object, report the detection of Li I 6707.8 AA absorption toward the HD 144432 system, and its apparent association with Sco OB2-2 located at 145 pc., Comment: 9 pages, 11 figures, accepted by A&A

In this Letter we propose a new view on UX Orionis type variability. The idea is based on the earlier proposal by various authors that UXORs are nearly-edge-on disks in which hydrodynamic fluctuations could cause clumps of dust and gas to cross the line of sight. However, because the standard disk models have a flaring geometry, it is mostly the outer regions of the disk that obscure the star. The time scales for such obscuration events would be too long to match the observed time scales of weeks to months. Recent 2-D self-consistent models of Herbig Ae/Be protoplanetary disks (Dullemond et al. 2002,2003 henceforth D02/DD03), however, have indicated that for Herbig Ae/Be star disks there exists, in addition to the usual flared disks, also a new class of disks: those that are fully self-shadowed. Only their puffed-up inner rim (at the dust evaporation radius) is directly irradiated by the star, while the disk at larger radius resides in the shadow of the rim. For these disks there exist inclinations at which the line of sight towards the star skims the upper parts of the puffed-up inner rim, while passing high over the surface of outer disk regions. Small hydrodynamic fluctuations in the puffed-up inner rim could then be held responsible for the extinction events seen in UXORs. If this idea is correct, it makes a prediction for the shape of the SEDs of these stars. It was shown by D02/DD03 that flared disks have a strong far-IR excess and can be classified as `group I' (in the classification of Meeus et al. 2001), while self-shadowed disks have a relatively weak far-IR excess and are classified as `group II'. Our model therefore predicts that UXORs belong to the `group II' sources. We present a catalogue of previously unpublished optical and infrared photometry for a sample of 162 emission-line objects and shell stars visible from the southern hemisphere. The data were obtained between 1978 and 1997 in the Walraven (WULBV), Johnson/Cousins (UBV(RI)_c) and ESO and SAAO near-infrared (JHKLM) photometric systems. Most of the observed objects are Herbig Ae/Be (HAeBe) stars or HAeBe candidates appearing in the list of HAeBe candidates of Th\'e et al. (1994), although several B[e] stars, LBVs and T Tauri are also included in our sample. For many of the stars the data presented here are the first photo-electric measurements in the literature. The resulting catalogue consists of 1809 photometric measurements. Optical variability was detected in 66 out of the 116 sources that were observed more than once. 15 out of the 50 stars observed multiple times in the infrared showed variability at 2.2 microns (K band)., Comment: 42 pages, no figures, to appear in Astronomy & Astrophysics

Recently, several groups of young stars in the solar neighborhood have been discovered. Given their proximity, these systems are ideally suited for detailed studies of star and planet formation. Here we report on a group of young stars associated with the bright F8V star HD 199143. At a distance of only 48 pc, this is the closest YSO group containing a classical T Tauri star (HD 358623; K7-M0e). New ground-based mid-infrared data shows that both HD 199143 and HD 358623 have large infrared excesses due to circumstellar disks. A systematic search for new members of this Capricornius association has yielded four new probable members, which we use to derive an age of 5-10 Myr for the group as a whole., Comment: 5 pages, 2 figures, to appear in Proc. We present new high and low resolution spectroscopic and photometric data of nine members of the young association CMa R1. All the stars have circumstellar dust at some distance as could be expected from their association with reflection nebulosity. Four stars (HD 52721, HD 53367, LkHalpha 220 and LkHalpha 218) show Halpha emission and we argue that they are Herbig Be stars with discs. Our photometric and spectroscopic observations on these stars reveal new characteristics of their variability. We present first interpretations of the variability of HD 52721, HD 53367 and the two LkHalpha stars in terms of a partially eclipsing binary, a magnetic activity cycle and circumstellar dust variations, respectively. The remaining five stars show no clear indications of Halpha emission in their spectra, although their spectral types and ages are comparable with those of HD 52721 and HD 53367. This indicates that the presence of a disc around a star in CMa R1 may depend on the environment of the star. In particular we find that all Halpha emission stars are located at or outside the arc-shaped border of the H II region, which suggests that the stars inside the arc have lost their discs through evaporation by UV photons from nearby O stars, or from the nearby (< 25 pc) supernova, about 1 Myr ago., Comment: 17 pages, 13 figures, accepted by MNRAS
