Search

Radio galaxies can extend far beyond the stellar component of their originating host galaxies, and their radio emission can consist of multiple discrete components. Furthermore, the apparent source structure will depend on survey sensitivity, resolution and the observing frequency. Associated discrete radio components and their originating host galaxy are typically identified through a visual comparison of radio and mid-infrared survey images. We present the first data release of Radio Galaxy Zoo, an online citizen science project that enlists the help of citizen scientists to cross-match extended radio sources from the Faint Images of the Radio Sky at Twenty Centimeters (FIRST) and the Australia Telescope Large Area Survey (ATLAS) surveys, often with complex structure, to host galaxies in 3.6 um infrared images from the Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE) and the Spitzer Space Telescope. This first data release consists of 100,185 classifications for 99,146 radio sources from the FIRST survey and 583 radio sources from the ATLAS survey. We include two tables for each of the FIRST and ATLAS surveys: 1)the identification of all components making up each radio source; and 2) the cross-matched host galaxies. These classifications have an average reliability of 0.83 based on the weighted consensus levels of our citizen scientists. The reliability of the DR1 catalogue has been further demonstrated through several parallel studies which used the pre-release versions of this catalogue to train and prototype machine learning-based classifiers. We applied a Density-Based Clustering algorithm on samples of galaxies and galaxy systems belonging to 53 rich superclusters from the \textit{Main SuperCluster Catalogue} (MSCC) to identify the presence of ``central regions'', or \emph{cores}, in these large-scale structures. \emph{Cores} are defined here as large gravitationally bound galaxy structures, comprised of two or more clusters and groups, with sufficient matter density to survive cosmic expansion and virialize in the future. We identified a total of 105 galaxy structures classified as \emph{cores}, which exhibit a high density contrast of mass and galaxies. The Density-based \textit{Core} Catalogue (DCC), presented here, includes \emph{cores} that were previously reported in well-known superclusters of the Local Universe, and also several newly identified ones. We found that 83\% of the rich superclusters in our sample have at least one \emph{core}. While more than three \emph{cores} with different dynamical state are possible, the presence of a single \emph{core} in the superclusters is more common. Our work confirms the existence of nucleation regions in the internal structure of most rich superclusters and points to the fact that these \emph{cores} are the densest and most massive features that can be identified in the cosmic web with high probability for future virialization., Comment: This article has been accepted for publication in the Publications of the Astronomical Society of Australia (PASA) journal. The Polarisation Sky Survey of the Universe's Magnetism (POSSUM) will conduct a sensitive $\sim$1 GHz radio polarization survey covering 20 000 square degrees of the Southern sky with the Australian Square Kilometre Array Pathfinder (ASKAP). In anticipation of the full survey, we analyze pilot observations of low-band (800-1087 MHz), mid-band (1316-1439 MHz), and combined-band observations for an extragalactic field and a Galactic-plane field (low-band only). Using the POSSUM processing pipeline, we produce prototype RM catalogs that are filtered to construct prototype RM grids. We assess typical RM grid densities and RM uncertainties and their dependence on frequency, bandwidth, and Galactic latitude. We present a median filter method for separating foreground diffuse emission from background components, and find that after application of the filter, 99.5% of measured RMs of simulated sources are within 3$\sigma$ of their true RM, with a typical loss of polarized intensity of 5% $\pm$ 5%. We find RM grid densities of 35.1, 30.6, 37.2, and 13.5 RMs per square degree and median uncertainties on RM measurements of 1.55, 12.82, 1.06, and 1.89 rad m$^{-2}$ for the median-filtered low-band, mid-band, combined-band, and Galactic observations, respectively. We estimate that the full POSSUM survey will produce an RM catalog of $\sim$775 000 RMs with median-filtered low-band observations and $\sim$877 000 RMs with median-filtered combined-band observations. We construct a structure function from the Galactic RM catalog, which shows a break at $0.7^{\circ}$, corresponding to a physical scale of 12-24 pc for the nearest spiral arm., Comment: 51 pages, 19 figures, 5 tables

In this study, we compare the radio, optical and environmental properties of GRGs with those of a control sample of smaller RGs we found in the three LOw-Frequency ARray (LOFAR) deep fields, namely the Bootes, ELAIS-N1, Lockman Hole, for a total area of about 95 deg^2. We inspected the LOFAR deep fields and created a catalogue of 1609 extended radio galaxies (ERGs). By visual inspection, we identified their host galaxies and spectroscopically or photometrically classified 280 of these as GRGs. We studied their properties, such as their accretion state, stellar mass and star formation rate (SFR) using deep optical and infrared survey data. Moreover, we explored the environment in terms of the surface number density of neighbouring galaxies within these surveys. Integrated flux densities and radio luminosities were also determined for a subset of ERGs through available survey images at 50, 150, 610, and 1400 MHz to compute integrated spectral indices. Considering the fraction of GRGs displaying an FRII morphology alongside the host galaxy properties, we suggest that GRGs consistently possess sufficient power to overcome jet frustration caused by the interstellar medium. Moreover, clear differences emerge in the environmental densities between GRGs and smaller RGs, using the number of neighbouring galaxies within 10 Mpc from the host galaxy as a proxy. GRGs preferentially reside in sparser environments compared to their smaller counterparts. In particular, only 3.6% of the GRGs reside within a 3D comoving distance of 5 Mpc from a previously reported galaxy cluster. We found that larger sources exhibit steeper integrated spectral indices, suggesting that GRGs are late-stage versions of RGs. These results suggest that GRGs are amongst the oldest radio sources with the most stable nuclear activity that reside in sparse environments., Comment: 21 pages, 11 figures. Clusters of galaxies have been found to host Mpc-scale diffuse, non-thermal radio emission in the form of central radio halos and peripheral relics. Turbulence and shock-related processes in the intra-cluster medium are generally considered responsible for the emission, though details of these processes are still not clear. The low surface brightness makes detection of the emission a challenge, but with recent surveys with high-sensitivity radio telescopes we are beginning to build large samples of these sources. The Evolutionary Map of the Universe (EMU) is a Southern Sky survey being performed by the Australian SKA Pathfinder (ASKAP) over the next few years and is well-suited to detect and characterise such emission. To assess prospects of the full survey, we have performed a pilot search of diffuse sources in 71 clusters from the Planck Sunyaev-Zeldovich (SZ) cluster catalogue (PSZ2) found in archival ASKAP observations. After re-imaging the archival data and performing both (u,v)-plane and image-plane angular scale filtering, we detect 21 radio halos (12 for the first time, excluding an additional six candidates), 11 relics (in seven clusters, and six for the first time, excluding a further five candidate relics), along with 12 other, unclassified diffuse radio sources. From these detections, we predict the full EMU survey will uncover up to ~254 radio halos and ~85 radio relics in the 858 PSZ2 clusters that will be covered by EMU. The percentage of clusters found to host diffuse emission in this work is similar to the number reported in recent cluster surveys with the LOw Frequency ARray (LOFAR) Two-metre Sky Survey (Botteon, et al. 2022a, A&A, 660, A78), suggesting EMU will complement similar searches being performed in the Northern Sky and provide us with statistically significant samples of halos and relics at the completion of the full survey., Comment: 46 pages, 116 individual figure files, accepted in PASA

We present a comparison between the performance of a selection of source finders using a new software tool called Hydra. The companion paper, Paper~I, introduced the Hydra tool and demonstrated its performance using simulated data. Here we apply Hydra to assess the performance of different source finders by analysing real observational data taken from the Evolutionary Map of the Universe (EMU) Pilot Survey. EMU is a wide-field radio continuum survey whose primary goal is to make a deep ($20\mu$Jy/beam RMS noise), intermediate angular resolution ($15^{\prime\prime}$), 1\,GHz survey of the entire sky south of $+30^{\circ}$ declination, and expecting to detect and catalogue up to 40 million sources. With the main EMU survey expected to begin in 2022 it is highly desirable to understand the performance of radio image source finder software and to identify an approach that optimises source detection capabilities. Hydra has been developed to refine this process, as well as to deliver a range of metrics and source finding data products from multiple source finders. We present the performance of the five source finders tested here in terms of their completeness and reliability statistics, their flux density and source size measurements, and an exploration of case studies to highlight finder-specific limitations., Comment: Paper accepted for publication in PASA

The latest generation of radio surveys are now producing sky survey images containing many millions of radio sources. In this context it is highly desirable to understand the performance of radio image source finder (SF) software and to identify an approach that optimises source detection capabilities. We have created Hydra to be an extensible multi-SF and cataloguing tool that can be used to compare and evaluate different SFs. Hydra, which currently includes the SFs Aegean, Caesar, ProFound, PyBDSF, and Selavy, provides for the addition of new SFs through containerisation and configuration files. The SF input RMS noise and island parameters are optimised to a 90\% ''percentage real detections'' threshold (calculated from the difference between detections in the real and inverted images), to enable comparison between SFs. Hydra provides completeness and reliability diagnostics through observed-deep ($\mathcal{D}$) and generated-shallow ($\mathcal{S}$) images, as well as other statistics. In addition, it has a visual inspection tool for comparing residual images through various selection filters, such as S/N bins in completeness or reliability. The tool allows the user to easily compare and evaluate different SFs in order to choose their desired SF, or a combination thereof. This paper is part one of a two part series. We present the discovery of highly-collimated radio jets spanning a total of 355 kpc around the nearby elliptical galaxy NGC 2663, and the possible first detection of recollimation on kiloparsec scales. The small distance to the galaxy (~28.5 Mpc) allows us to resolve portions of the jets to examine their structure. We combine multiwavelength data: radio observations by the Murchison Widefield Array (MWA), the Australian Square Kilometre Array Pathfinder (ASKAP) and the Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA), and X-ray data from Chandra, Swift and SRG/eROSITA. We present intensity, rotation measure, polarisation, spectral index and X-ray environment maps. Regions of the southern jet show simultaneous narrowing and brightening, which can be interpreted as a signature of the recollimation of the jet by external, environmental pressure, though it is also consistent with an intermittent Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) or complex internal jet structure. X-ray data suggest that the environment is extremely poor; if the jet is indeed recollimating, the large recollimation scale (40 kpc) is consistent with a slow jet in a low-density environment., Comment: 16 pages, 14 figures, Accepted for publication in MNRAS

We present the Australian Square Kilometre Array Pathfinder (ASKAP) observations of the Galaxy and Mass Assembly (GAMA)-23h field. The survey was carried out at 887.5 MHz and covers a 83 square degree field. We imaged the calibrated visibility data, taken as part of the Evolutionary Mapping of Universe (EMU) Early Science Programme, using the latest version of the ASKAPSoft pipeline. The final mosaic has an angular resolution of 10 arcsec and a central rms noise of around 38 $\mu$Jy beam$^{-1}$. The derived radio source catalogue has 39812 entries above a peak flux density threshold of 5$\sigma$. We searched for the radio source host galaxy counterparts using the GAMA spectroscopic (with an i-band magnitude limit of 19.2 mag) and multi-wavelength catalogues that are available as part of the collaboration. We identified hosts with GAMA spectroscopic redshifts for 5934 radio sources. We describe the data reduction, imaging, and source identification process, and present the source counts. Thanks to the wide area covered by our survey, we obtain very robust counts down to 0.2 mJy. ASKAP's exceptional survey speed, providing efficient, sensitive and high resolution mapping of large regions of the sky in conjunction with the multi-wavelength data available for the GAMA23 field, allowed us to discover 63 giant radio galaxies. We report the discovery of J0624-6948, a low-surface brightness radio ring, lying between the Galactic Plane and the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). It was first detected at 888 MHz with the Australian Square Kilometre Array Pathfinder (ASKAP), and with a diameter of ~196 arcsec. This source has phenomenological similarities to Odd Radio Circles (ORCs). Significant differences to the known ORCs - a flatter radio spectral index, the lack of a prominent central galaxy as a possible host, and larger apparent size - suggest that J0624-6948 may be a different type of object. We argue that the most plausible explanation for J0624-6948 is an intergalactic supernova remnant due to a star that resided in the LMC outskirts that had undergone a single-degenerate type Ia supernova, and we are seeing its remnant expand into a rarefied, intergalactic environment. We also examine if a massive star or a white dwarf binary ejected from either galaxy could be the supernova progenitor. Finally, we consider several other hypotheses for the nature of the object, including the jets of an active galactic nucleus (AGN) or the remnant of a nearby stellar super-flare., Comment: 20 pages accepted to MNRAS

We present a comprehensive multi-frequency catalogue of radio sources behind the Large Magellanic Cloud between 0.2 and 20 GHz, gathered from a combination of new and legacy radio continuum surveys. This catalogue covers an area of $\sim$144~deg$^2$ at angular resolutions from 45 arcsec to $\sim$3 arcmin. We find 6434 discrete radio sources in total, of which 3789 are detected at two or more radio frequencies. We estimate the median spectral index ($\alpha$; where $S_{v}\sim\nu^\alpha$) of $\alpha = -0.89 $ and mean of $-0.88 \pm 0.48$ for 3636 sources detected exclusively at two frequencies (0.843 and 1.384 GHz) with similar resolution (FWHM $\sim$40-45 arcsec). The large frequency range of the surveys makes it an effective tool to investigate Gigahertz Peak Spectrum (GPS), Compact Steep Spectrum (CSS) and Infrared Faint Radio sources populations within our sample. We find 10 GPS candidates with peak frequencies near 5 GHz, from which we estimate their linear size. 1866 sources from our catalogue are (CSS) candidates with $\alpha <-0.8$. We found six candidates for High Frequency Peaker (HFP) sources, whose radio fluxes peak above 5 GHz and no sources with unconstrained peaks and $\alpha~>0.5$. We found optical counterparts for 343 of the radio continuum sources, of which 128have a redshift measurement. Finally, we investigate the population of 123 Infrared Faint Radio Sources (IFRSs) found in this study., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS

The remnant phase of a radio galaxy begins when the jets launched from an active galactic nucleus are switched off. To study the fraction of radio galaxies in a remnant phase, we take advantage of a $8.31$\,deg$^2$ sub-region of the GAMA~23~field which comprises of surveys covering the frequency range 0.1--9\,GHz. We present a sample of 104 radio galaxies compiled from observations conducted by the Murchison Wide-field Array (216\,MHz), the Australia Square Kilometer Array Pathfinder (887\,MHz), and the Australia Telescope Compact Array (5.5\,GHz). We adopt an `absent radio core' criterion to identify 10 radio galaxies showing no evidence for an active nucleus. We classify these as new candidate remnant radio galaxies. Seven of these objects still display compact emitting regions within the lobes at 5.5\,GHz; at this frequency the emission is short-lived, implying a recent jet switch-off. On the other hand, only three show evidence of aged lobe plasma by the presence of an ultra-steep spectrum ($\alpha<-1.2$) and a diffuse, low surface-brightness radio morphology. The predominant fraction of young remnants is consistent with a rapid fading during the remnant phase. Within our sample of radio galaxies, our observations constrain the remnant fraction to $4\%\lesssim f_{\mathrm{rem}} \lesssim 10\%$; the lower limit comes from the limiting case in which all remnant candidates with hotspots are simply active radio galaxies with faint, undetected radio cores. Finally, we model the synchrotron spectrum arising from a hotspot to show they can persist for 5--10\,Myr at 5.5\,GHz after the jets switch off -- radio emission arising from such hotspots can therefore be expected in an appreciable fraction of genuine remnants.

We present observations of a region of the Galactic plane taken during the Early Science Program of the Australian Square Kilometre Array Pathfinder (ASKAP). In this context, we observed the SCORPIO field at 912 MHz with an uncompleted array consisting of 15 commissioned antennas. The resulting map covers a square region of ~40 deg^2, centred on (l, b)=(343.5{\deg}, 0.75{\deg}), with a synthesized beam of 24"x21" and a background rms noise of 150-200 {\mu}Jy/beam, increasing to 500-600 {\mu}Jy/beam close to the Galactic plane. A total of 3963 radio sources were detected and characterized in the field using the CAESAR source finder. We obtained differential source counts in agreement with previously published data after correction for source extraction and characterization uncertainties, estimated from simulated data. The ASKAP positional and flux density scale accuracy were also investigated through comparison with previous surveys (MGPS, NVSS) and additional observations of the SCORPIO field, carried out with ATCA at 2.1 GHz and 10" spatial resolution. These allowed us to obtain a measurement of the spectral index for a subset of the catalogued sources and an estimated fraction of (at least) 8% of resolved sources in the reported catalogue. We cross-matched our catalogued sources with different astronomical databases to search for possible counterparts, finding ~150 associations to known Galactic objects. The pre-merging system of galaxy clusters Abell 3391-Abell 3395 located at a mean redshift of 0.053 has been observed at 1 GHz in an ASKAP/EMU Early Science observation as well as in X-rays with eROSITA. The projected separation of the X-ray peaks of the two clusters is $\sim$50$'$ or $\sim$ 3.1 Mpc. Here we present an inventory of interesting radio sources in this field around this cluster merger. While the eROSITA observations provide clear indications of a bridge of thermal gas between the clusters, neither ASKAP nor MWA observations show any diffuse radio emission coinciding with the X-ray bridge. We derive an upper limit on the radio emissivity in the bridge region of $\langle J \rangle_{1\,{\rm GHz}}< 1.2 \times 10^{-44} {\rm W}\, {\rm Hz}^{-1} {\rm m}^{-3}$. A non-detection of diffuse radio emission in the X-ray bridge between these two clusters has implications for particle-acceleration mechanisms in cosmological large-scale structure. We also report extended or otherwise noteworthy radio sources in the 30 deg$^2$ field around Abell 3391-Abell 3395. We identified 20 Giant Radio Galaxies, plus 7 candidates, with linear projected sizes greater than 1 Mpc. The sky density of field radio galaxies with largest linear sizes of $>0.7$ Mpc is $\approx 1.7$ deg$^{-2}$, three times higher than previously reported. We find no evidence for a cosmological evolution of the population of Giant Radio Galaxies. We present a detailed analysis of the radio galaxy PKS 2250-351, a giant of 1.2 Mpc projected size, its host galaxy, and its environment. We use radio data from the Murchison Widefield Array, the upgraded Giant Metre-wavelength Radio Telescope, the Australian Square Kilometre Array Pathfinder, and the Australia Telescope Compact Array to model the jet power and age. Optical and infra-red data come from the Galaxy And Mass Assembly (GAMA) survey and provide information on the host galaxy and environment. GAMA spectroscopy confirms that PKS 2250-351 lies at z=0.2115 in the irregular, and likely unrelaxed, cluster Abell 3936. We find its host is a massive, `red and dead' elliptical galaxy with negligible star formation but with a highly obscured active galactic nucleus dominating the mid-infrared emission. Assuming it lies on the local M-sigma relation it has an Eddington accretion rate of lambda_EDD~0.014. We find that the lobe-derived jet power (a time-averaged measure) is an order of magnitude greater than the hotspot-derived jet power (an instantaneous measure). We propose that over the lifetime of the observed radio emission (~300 Myr) the accretion has switched from an inefficient advection dominated mode to a thin-disc efficient mode, consistent with the decrease in jet power. We also suggest that the asymmetric radio morphology is due to its environment, with the host of PKS 2250-351 lying to the west of the densest concentration of galaxies in Abell 3936., Comment: 16 pages and 8 figures, accepted for publication in PASA

We present two new radio continuum images from the Australian Square Kilometre Array Pathfinder (ASKAP) survey in the direction of the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC). These images are part of the Evolutionary Map of the Universe (EMU) Early Science Project (ESP) survey of the Small and Large Magellanic Clouds. The two new source lists produced from these images contain radio continuum sources observed at 960 MHz (4489 sources) and 1320 MHz (5954 sources) with a bandwidth of 192 MHz and beam sizes of 30.0"x30.0" and 16.3"x15.1", respectively. The median Root Mean Squared (RMS) noise values are 186$\mu$Jy beam$^{-1}$ (960 MHz) and 165$\mu$Jy beam$^{-1}$ (1320 MHz). To create point source catalogues, we use these two source lists, together with the previously published Molonglo Observatory Synthesis Telescope (MOST) and the Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA) point source catalogues to estimate spectral indices for the whole population of radio point sources found in the survey region. Combining our ASKAP catalogues with these radio continuum surveys, we found 7736 point-like sources in common over an area of 30 deg$^2$. In addition, we report the detection of two new, low surface brightness supernova remnant candidates in the SMC. The high sensitivity of the new ASKAP ESP survey also enabled us to detect the bright end of the SMC planetary nebula sample, with 22 out of 102 optically known planetary nebulae showing point-like radio continuum emission. The Very Large Array Sky Survey (VLASS) is a synoptic, all-sky radio sky survey with a unique combination of high angular resolution ($\approx$2.5"), sensitivity (a 1$\sigma$ goal of 70 $\mu$Jy/beam in the coadded data), full linear Stokes polarimetry, time domain coverage, and wide bandwidth (2-4 GHz). The first observations began in September 2017, and observing for the survey will finish in 2024. VLASS will use approximately 5500 hours of time on the Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array (VLA) to cover the whole sky visible to the VLA (Declination $>-40^{\circ}$), a total of 33,885 deg$^2$. The data will be taken in three epochs to allow the discovery of variable and transient radio sources. The survey is designed to engage radio astronomy experts, multi-wavelength astronomers, and citizen scientists alike. By utilizing an "on the fly" interferometry mode, the observing overheads are much reduced compared to a conventional pointed survey. Faraday rotation measures (RMs) of extragalactic radio sources provide information on line-of-sight magnetic fields, including contributions from our Galaxy, source environments, and the intergalactic medium (IGM). Looking at differences in RMs, $\Delta$RM, between adjacent sources on the sky can help isolate these different components. In this work, we classify adjacent polarized sources in the NVSS as random or physical pairs. We recompute and correct the uncertainties in the NVSS RM catalog, since these were significantly overestimated. Our sample contains 317 physical and 5111 random pairs, all with Galactic latitudes $|b|\ge20^{\circ}$, polarization fractions $\ge2\%$, and angular separations between $1.^{'},$ and $20^{'}$. We find an rms $\Delta$RM of $14.9\pm0.4\,$rad m$^{-2}$ and $4.6\pm1.1\,$rad m$^{-2}$ for random and physical pairs, respectively. This means polarized extragalactic sources that are close on the sky, but at different redshifts, have larger differences in RM than two components of one source. This difference of $\sim10\,$rad m$^{-2}$ is significant at $5\sigma$, and persists in different data subsamples. While there have been other statistical studies of $\Delta$RM between adjacent polarized sources, this is the first unambiguous demonstration that some of this RM difference must be extragalactic, thereby providing a firm upper limit on the RM contribution of the IGM. If the $\Delta$RMs originate local to the sources, then the local magnetic field difference between random sources is a factor of two larger than between components of one source. Alternatively, attributing the difference in $\Delta$RMs to the intervening IGM yields an upper limit on the IGM magnetic field strength of $40\,$nG., Comment: 26 pages, 13 figures, 3 tables. Cosmological simulations predict that an intergalactic magnetic field (IGMF) pervades the large scale structure (LSS) of the Universe. Measuring the IGMF is important to determine its origin (i.e. primordial or otherwise). Using data from the LOFAR Two Metre Sky Survey (LoTSS), we present the Faraday rotation measure (RM) and depolarisation properties of the giant radio galaxy J1235+5317, at a redshift of $z = 0.34$ and 3.38 Mpc in size. We find a mean RM difference between the lobes of $2.5\pm0.1$ rad/m$^2$ , in addition to small scale RM variations of ~0.1 rad/m$^2$ . From a catalogue of LSS filaments based on optical spectroscopic observations in the local universe, we find an excess of filaments intersecting the line of sight to only one of the lobes. Associating the entire RM difference to these LSS filaments leads to a gas density-weighted IGMF strength of ~0.3 {\mu}G. However, direct comparison with cosmological simulations of the RM contribution from LSS filaments gives a low probability (~5%) for an RM contribution as large as 2.5 rad/m$^2$ , for the case of IGMF strengths of 10 to 50 nG. It is likely that variations in the RM from the Milky Way (on 11' scales) contribute significantly to the mean RM difference, and a denser RM grid is required to better constrain this contribution. In general, this work demonstrates the potential of the LOFAR telescope to probe the weak signature of the IGMF. Future studies, with thousands of sources with high accuracy RMs from LoTSS, will enable more stringent constraints on the nature of the IGMF., Comment: 12 pages, 6 figures, 3 tables. We investigate the role of environment on radio galaxy properties by constructing a sample of large ($\gtrsim100$~kpc), nearby ($z<0.3$) radio sources identified as part of the Radio Galaxy Zoo citizen science project. Our sample consists of 16 Fanaroff-Riley Type II (FR-II) sources, 6 FR-I sources, and one source with a hybrid morphology. FR-I sources appear to be hosted by more massive galaxies, consistent with previous studies. In the FR-II sample, we compare the degree of asymmetry in radio lobe properties to asymmetry in the radio source environment, quantified through optical galaxy clustering. We find that the length of radio lobes in FR-II sources is anti-correlated with both galaxy clustering and lobe luminosity. These results are in quantitative agreement with predictions from radio source dynamical models, and suggest that galaxy clustering provides a useful proxy for the ambient gas density distribution encountered by the radio lobes., Comment: 18 pages, 31 figures, 1 table; accepted in MNRAS

We consider the problem of determining the host galaxies of radio sources by cross-identification. This has traditionally been done manually, which will be intractable for wide-area radio surveys like the Evolutionary Map of the Universe (EMU). Automated cross-identification will be critical for these future surveys, and machine learning may provide the tools to develop such methods. We apply a standard approach from computer vision to cross-identification, introducing one possible way of automating this problem, and explore the pros and cons of this approach. We apply our method to the 1.4 GHz Australian Telescope Large Area Survey (ATLAS) observations of the Chandra Deep Field South (CDFS) and the ESO Large Area ISO Survey South 1 (ELAIS-S1) fields by cross-identifying them with the Spitzer Wide-area Infrared Extragalactic (SWIRE) survey. We train our method with two sets of data: expert cross-identifications of CDFS from the initial ATLAS data release and crowdsourced cross-identifications of CDFS from Radio Galaxy Zoo. We found that a simple strategy of cross-identifying a radio component with the nearest galaxy performs comparably to our more complex methods, though our estimated best-case performance is near 100 per cent. ATLAS contains 87 complex radio sources that have been cross-identified by experts, so there are not enough complex examples to learn how to cross-identify them accurately. Much larger datasets are therefore required for training methods like ours. We also show that training our method on Radio Galaxy Zoo cross-identifications gives comparable results to training on expert cross-identifications, demonstrating the value of crowdsourced training data.

Hybrid morphology radio sources are a rare type of radio galaxy that display different Fanaroff-Riley classes on opposite sides of their nuclei. To enhance the statistical analysis of hybrid morphology radio sources, we embarked on a large-scale search of these sources within the international citizen science project, Radio Galaxy Zoo (RGZ). Here, we present 25 new candidate hybrid morphology radio galaxies. Our selected candidates are moderate power radio galaxies (L_median = 4.7x10^{24} W/(Hz sr) at redshifts 0.141Mpc) radio galaxies, one resides at a centre of a galaxy cluster, and one is hosted by a rare green bean galaxy. Although the origin of the hybrid morphology radio galaxies is still unclear, this type of radio source starts depicting itself as a rather diverse class. We discuss hybrid radio morphology formation in terms of the radio source environment (nurture) and intrinsically occurring phenomena (nature; activity cessation and amplification), showing that these peculiar radio galaxies can be formed by both mechanisms. While high angular resolution follow-up observations are still necessary to confirm our candidates, we demonstrate the efficacy of the Radio Galaxy Zoo in the pre-selection of these sources from all-sky radio surveys, and report the reliability of citizen scientists in identifying and classifying complex radio sources., Comment: 16 pages, published by Astronomical Journal

We study the mutual alignment of radio sources within two surveys, FIRST and TGSS. This is done by producing two position angle catalogues containing the preferential directions of respectively $30\,059$ and $11\,674$ extended sources distributed over more than $7\,000$ and $17\,000$ square degrees. The identification of the sources in the FIRST sample was performed in advance by volunteers of the Radio Galaxy Zoo project, while for the TGSS sample it is the result of an automated process presented here. After taking into account systematic effects, marginal evidence of a local alignment on scales smaller than $2.5\deg$ is found in the FIRST sample. The probability of this happening by chance is found to be less than $2$ per cent. Further study suggests that on scales up to $1.5\deg$ the alignment is maximal. For one third of the sources, the Radio Galaxy Zoo volunteers identified an optical counterpart. Assuming a flat $\Lambda$CDM cosmology with $\Omega_m = 0.31, \Omega_\Lambda = 0.69$, we convert the maximum angular scale on which alignment is seen into a physical scale in the range $[19, 38]$ Mpc $h_{70}^{-1}$. This result supports recent evidence reported by Taylor and Jagannathan of radio jet alignment in the $1.4$ deg$^2$ ELAIS N1 field observed with the Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope. The TGSS sample is found to be too sparsely populated to manifest a similar signal.

We have discovered a previously unreported poor cluster of galaxies (RGZ-CL J0823.2+0333) through an unusual giant wide-angle tail radio galaxy found in the Radio Galaxy Zoo project. We obtained a spectroscopic redshift of $z=0.0897$ for the E0-type host galaxy, 2MASX J08231289+0333016, leading to M$_r = -22.6$ and a $1.4\,$GHz radio luminosity density of $L_{\rm 1.4} = 5.5\times10^{24}$ W Hz$^{-1}$. These radio and optical luminosities are typical for wide-angle tailed radio galaxies near the borderline between Fanaroff-Riley (FR) classes I and II. The projected largest angular size of $\approx8\,$arcmin corresponds to $800\,$kpc and the full length of the source along the curved jets/trails is $1.1\,$Mpc in projection. X-ray data from the XMM-Newton archive yield an upper limit on the X-ray luminosity of the thermal emission surrounding RGZ J082312.9+033301,at $1.2-2.6\times10^{43}$ erg s$^{-1}$ for assumed intra-cluster medium temperatures of $1.0-5.0\,$keV. Our analysis of the environment surrounding RGZ J082312.9+033301 indicates that RGZ J082312.9+033301 lies within a poor cluster. The observed radio morphology suggests that (a) the host galaxy is moving at a significant velocity with respect to an ambient medium like that of at least a poor cluster, and that (b) the source may have had two ignition events of the active galactic nucleus with $10^7\,$yrs in between. This reinforces the idea that an association between RGZ J082312.9+033301, and the newly discovered poor cluster exists., Comment: Published in MNRAS

We present results from the first twelve months of operation of Radio Galaxy Zoo, which upon completion will enable visual inspection of over 170,000 radio sources to determine the host galaxy of the radio emission and the radio morphology. Radio Galaxy Zoo uses $1.4\,$GHz radio images from both the Faint Images of the Radio Sky at Twenty Centimeters (FIRST) and the Australia Telescope Large Area Survey (ATLAS) in combination with mid-infrared images at $3.4\,\mu$m from the {\it Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer} (WISE) and at $3.6\,\mu$m from the {\it Spitzer Space Telescope}. We present the early analysis of the WISE mid-infrared colours of the host galaxies. For images in which there is $>\,75\%$ consensus among the Radio Galaxy Zoo cross-identifications, the project participants are as effective as the science experts at identifying the host galaxies. The majority of the identified host galaxies reside in the mid-infrared colour space dominated by elliptical galaxies, quasi-stellar objects (QSOs), and luminous infrared radio galaxies (LIRGs). We also find a distinct population of Radio Galaxy Zoo host galaxies residing in a redder mid-infrared colour space consisting of star-forming galaxies and/or dust-enhanced non star-forming galaxies consistent with a scenario of merger-driven active galactic nuclei (AGN) formation. The completion of the full Radio Galaxy Zoo project will measure the relative populations of these hosts as a function of radio morphology and power while providing an avenue for the identification of rare and extreme radio structures. We present results of a search for giant radio galaxies (GRGs) with a projected largest linear size in excess of 1 Mpc. We designed a computational algorithm to identify contiguous emission regions, large and elongated enough to serve as GRG candidates, and applied it to the entire 1.4-GHz NRAO VLA Sky survey (NVSS). In a subsequent visual inspection of 1000 such regions we discovered 15 new GRGs, as well as many other candidate GRGs, some of them previously reported, for which no redshift was known. Our follow-up spectroscopy of 25 of the brighter hosts using two 2.1-m telescopes in Mexico, and four fainter hosts with the 10.4-m Gran Telescopio Canarias (GTC), yielded another 24 GRGs. We determined accurate positions for 3000 of the "faint blue stars" in the PHL (Palomar-Haro-Luyten) and Ton/TonS catalogues. These were published from 1957 to 1962, and, aimed at finding new white dwarfs, provide approximate positions for about 10750 blue stellar objects. Some of these "stars" had become known as quasars, a type of objects unheard-of before 1963. We derived subarcsec positions from a comparison of published finding charts with images from the first-epoch Digitized Sky Survey. Numerous objects are now well known, but unfortunately neither their PHL or Ton numbers, nor their discoverers, are recognized in current databases. A comparison with modern radio, IR, UV and X-ray surveys leads us to suggest that the fraction of extragalactic objects in the PHL and Ton catalogues is at least 15 per cent. Using a new color-color diagnostic diagram in the mid infrared built from WISE data, the MIRDD, we compare narrow emission-line galaxies (NELGs) that exhibit different activity types (star-forming galaxies, SFGs, and AGNs, i.e.,LINERs, Sy2s and TOs), with broad-line AGNs (QSOs and Sy1s) and BL Lac objects at low redshift ($z \le 0.25$). We show that the BL Lac objects occupy in the MIRDD the same region as the LINERs, whereas the QSOs and Sy1s occupy an intermediate region, between the LINERs and the Sy2s.In the MIRDD these galaxies trace a sequence that can be reproduced by a power law, $F_\nu = \nu^{\alpha}$, where the spectral index, $\alpha$, varies from 0 to $-2$, which is similar to what is observed in the optical-ultraviolet part of the spectra of AGNs with different luminosities. For the NELGs, we perform a stellar population synthesis analysis, demonstrating that the ${\rm W}2-{\rm W}3$ color is tightly correlated with the level of star formation in their host galaxies. A comparison of their MIR colors with the colors yielded by energy distributions (SEDs) of galaxies with different activity types, shows that the SED of the LINERs is similar to the SEDs of the QSOs and Sy1s, consistent with AGN galaxies with mild star formation, whereas the SEDs of the Sy2s and TOs are consistent with AGN galaxies with strong star formation components. For the BL Lac objects, we can only fit a SED that has no star formation component, consistent with AGNs in elliptical-type galaxies. From their similarities in MIR colors and SEDs, we infer that, in the nearby universe, the level of star formation activity most probably increases in the host galaxies of emission-line galaxies with different activity types along the sequence BL Lac$\rightarrow$LINER$\rightarrow$QSO/Sy1$\rightarrow$Sy2$\rightarrow$TO$\rightarrow$SFG., Comment: 77 pages, 30 figures, To be published in The Astronomical Journal

We present two new catalogues of superclusters of galaxies out to a redshit of z = 0.15, based on the Abell/ACO cluster redshift compilation maintained by one of us (HA). The first of these catalogues, the all-sky Main SuperCluster Catalogue (MSCC), is based on only the rich (A-) Abell clusters, and the second one, the Southern SuperCluster Catalogue (SSCC), covers declinations delta < -17 deg and includes the supplementary Abell S-clusters. A tunable Friends-of-Friends (FoF) algorithm was used to account for the cluster density decreasing with redshift and for different selection functions in distinct areas of the sky. We present the full list of Abell clusters used, together with their redshifts and supercluster memberships and including the isolated clusters. The SSCC contains about twice the number of superclusters than MSCC for delta < -17 deg, which we found to be due to: (1) new superclusters formed by A-clusters in their cores and surrounded by S-clusters (50%), (2) new superclusters formed by S-clusters only (40%), (3) redistribution of member clusters by fragmentation of rich (multiplicity m > 15) superclusters (8%), and (4) new superclusters formed by the connection of A-clusters through bridges of S-clusters (2%). Power-law fits to the cumulative supercluster multiplicity function yield slopes of alpha = -2.0 and alpha = -1.9 for MSCC and SSCC respectively. This power-law behavior is in agreement with the findings for other observational samples of superclusters, but not with that of catalogues based on cosmological simulations., Comment: 15 pages, 8 figures

Using data from the Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE) we show that the mid infrared (MIR) colors of low-luminosity AGNs (LLAGNs) are significanlty different from those of post-asymptotic giant branch stars (PAGBs). This is due to a difference in spectral energy distribution (SEDs), the LLAGNs showing a flat component due to an AGN. Consistent with this interpretation we show that in a MIR color-color diagram the LINERs and the Seyfert~2s follow a power law with specific colors that allow to distinguish them from each other, and from star forming galaxies, according to their present level of star formation. Based on this result we present a new diagnostic diagram in the MIR that confirms the classification obtained in the optical using standard diagnostic diagrams, clearly identifying LINERs and LLAGNs as genuine AGNs., Comment: 32 pages, 15 figures, accepted for publication in RevMexAA

Using a sample of 229618 narrow emission-line galaxies, we have determined the normal star formation histories (SFHs) for galaxies with different activity types: star forming galaxies (SFGs), transition type objects (TOs), Seyfert 2s (Sy2s) and LINERs. We find that the variation of the SFH with the activity type is explained by the mass of the galaxies and the importance of their bulge: the LINERs reside in massive early-type galaxies, the Sy2s and TOs are hosted by intermediate mass galaxies with intermediate morphological types, and the SFGs are found in lower mass late-type spirals. Except for the Sy2s, the more massive galaxies formed the bulk of their stars more rapidly than the less massive ones. The Sy2s formed their stars more slowly and show presently an excess in star formation. We have also found that the maximum in star formation rate in the past increases with the virial mass within the aperture (VMA), the VMA increasing from the SFGs to the TOs, to the Sy2s, culminating in the LINERs. This correlation suggests that the bulges and the supermassive black holes at the center of galaxies grow in parallel, in good agreement with the M(BH)-sigma relation., Comment: 41 pages, 20 figures, accepted in RevMexAA, vol. 49, no. 2

In order to study the mechanism of formation of cD galaxies we search for possible dependencies between the K-band luminosity of cDs and the parameters of their host clusters which we select to have a dominant cD galaxy, corresponding to a cluster morphology of Bautz-Morgan (BM) type I. As a comparison sample we use cD galaxies in clusters where they are not dominant, which we define here as non-BMI (NBMI) type clusters. We find that for 71 BMI clusters the absolute K-band luminosity of cDs depends on the cluster richness, but less strongly on the cluster velocity dispersion. Meanwhile, for 35 NBMI clusters the correlation between cD luminosity and cluster richness is weaker, and is absent between cD luminosity and velocity dispersion. In addition, we find that the luminosity of the cD galaxy hosted in BMI clusters tends to increase with the cD's peculiar velocity with respect to the cluster mean velocity. In contrast, for NBMI clusters the cD luminosity decreases with increasing peculiar velocity. Also, the X-ray luminosity of BMI clusters depends on the cluster velocity dispersion, while in NBMI clusters such a correlation is absent. These findings favour the cannibalism scenario for the formation of cD galaxies. We suggest that cDs in clusters of BMI type were formed and evolved preferentially in one and the same cluster. A sample of 229618 narrow emission-line galaxies is used to establish two new unambiguous type of evidence for supermassive black holes at the center of their nuclei: 1) the Seyfert 2 galaxies and LINERs follow the same characteristic power law relating the luminosity of ionized flux with that of the continuum; 2) both show the highest concentration of mass at their center, independent of the morphology of the galaxy, consistent with higher binding energies. The Full Width at Half Maximum is shown to be related with the mass concentration, suggesting that the kinetic energy of the gas in AGNs has a gravitational origin. Within the standard accretion model, the Transition-type Objects, Seyfert 2 galaxies and LINERs represent AGNs forming supermassive black holes on different mass-scales, or they could be related through an evolutionary process, the LINERs representing the end product of this evolution., Comment: 32 pages, 17 figures. We compare the Spectral Energy Distribution (SED) of radio-loud and radio-quiet AGNs in three different samples observed with SDSS: radio-loud AGNs (RLAGNs), Low Luminosity AGNs (LLAGNs) and AGNs in isolated galaxies (IG-AGNs). All these galaxies have similar optical spectral characteristics. The median SED of the RLAGNs is consistent with the characteristic SED of quasars, while that of the LLAGNs and IG-AGNs are consistent with the SED of LINERs, with a lower luminosity in the IG-AGNs than in the LLAGNs. We infer the masses of the black holes (BHs) from the bulge masses. These increase from the IG-AGNs to the LLAGNs and are highest for the RLAGNs. All these AGNs show accretion rates near or slightly below 10% of the Eddington limit, the differences in luminosity being solely due to different BH masses. We discuss the nature and origin of the nuclear activity observed in a sample of 292 SDSS narrow-emission-line galaxies, considered to have formed and evolved in isolation. All these galaxies are spiral like and show some kind of nuclear activity. The fraction of Narrow Line AGNs (NLAGNs) and Transition type Objects (TOs; a NLAGN with circumnuclear star formation) is relatively high, amounting to 64% of the galaxies. There is a definite trend for the NLAGNs to appear in early-type spirals, while the star forming galaxies and TOs are found in later-type spirals. We verify that the probability for a galaxy to show an AGN characteristic increases with the bulge mass of the galaxy (Torre-Papaqui et al. 2011), and find evidence that this trend is really a by-product of the morphology, suggesting that the AGN phenomenon is intimately connected with the formation process of the galaxies. Consistent with this interpretation, we establish a strong connection between the astration rate--the efficiency with which the gas is transformed into stars--the AGN phenomenon, and the gravitational binding energy of the galaxies: the higher the binding energy, the higher the astration rate and the higher the probability to find an AGN. EMU is a wide-field radio continuum survey planned for the new Australian Square Kilometre Array Pathfinder (ASKAP) telescope. The primary goal of EMU is to make a deep (rms ~ 10 microJy/beam) radio continuum survey of the entire Southern Sky at 1.3 GHz, extending as far North as +30 degrees declination, with a resolution of 10 arcsec. EMU is expected to detect and catalogue about 70 million galaxies, including typical star-forming galaxies up to z~1, powerful starbursts to even greater redshifts, and AGNs to the edge of the visible Universe. It will undoubtedly discover new classes of object. We have selected a sample of 292 SDSS Narrow-Emission-Line galaxies known to have formed and evolved in relative isolation to study the nature and origin of the AGN phenomenon. The galaxies in our sample have line fluxes with S/N>3 and were separated using a standard diagnostic diagram into Star Forming Galaxies (SFGs; 36.0%), Transition type Objects (TOs; 28.4%) and Narrow-Line AGNs (NLAGNs; 35.6%). Having found a strong correlation between the bulge mass and the NLAGN phenomenon, we have applied the same relation as for the Broad-Line AGNs to estimate their black hole (BH) masses. The BH in the NLAGNs are 2 to 3 orders lower in mass than the BHs found in BLAGNs, but are comparable to those observed in Narrow-Line Seyfert~1, although none of our objects can be classified as such. To determine the metallicities, [O/H], of the NLAGNs we calibrated the standard diagnostic diagram [OIII]/Hb vs. [NII]/Ha using similar relation as for the SFGs, which reproduce the values obtained with CLOUDY simulations developed for Bennert et al. [3]. For some individual objects we compared our line ratios with other CLOUDY similations by different authors. This suggests we achieve a typical uncertainty of 0.2 dex on [O/H], increasing to 0.3-0.5 in the Seyfert~2 (S2). This calibration suggests the metallicities of the NLAGNs are subsolar, varying between 1 and 0.3 $Z_\odot$. We find two statistically significant positive correlations: for [O/H] with the BH mass and for [O/H] with the luminosity at 5100\AA, $\lambda L(5100$\AA$)$. No correlation is found between [O/H] and the accretion rate, L_bol/L_Edd. However, comparisons with the BLAGNs suggest the NLAGNs extend the metallicity-accretion rate relationship [24] to the low metallicity regime. By cross-correlating large samples of galaxy clusters with publicly available radio source catalogs, we construct the volume-averaged radio luminosity function (RLF) in clusters of galaxies, and investigate its dependence on cluster redshift and mass. In addition, we determine the correlation between the cluster mass and the radio luminosity of the brightest source within 50 kpc from the cluster center. We use two cluster samples: the optically selected maxBCG cluster catalog and a composite sample of X-ray selected clusters. The radio data come from the VLA NVSS and FIRST surveys. We use scaling relations to estimate cluster masses and radii to get robust estimates of cluster volumes. We determine the projected radial distribution of sources, for which we find no dependence on luminosity or cluster mass. Background and foreground sources are statistically accounted for, and we account for confusion of radio sources by adaptively degrading the resolution of the radio source surveys. We determine the redshift evolution of the RLF under the assumption that its overall shape does not change with redshift. Our results are consistent with a pure luminosity evolution of the RLF in the range 0.1 < z < 0.3 from the optical cluster sample. The X-ray sample extends to higher redshift and yields results also consistent with a pure luminosity evolution. We present relations between X-ray luminosity and velocity dispersion (L-sigma), X-ray luminosity and gas mass (L-Mgas), and cluster radius and velocity dispersion (r500-sigma) for 62 galaxy clusters in the HIFLUGCS, an X-ray flux-limited sample minimizing bias toward any cluster morphology. Our analysis in total is based on ~1.3Ms of clean X-ray XMM-Newton data and 13439 cluster member galaxies with redshifts. Cool cores are among the major contributors to the scatter in the L-sigma relation. When the cool-core-corrected X-ray luminosity is used the intrinsic scatter decreases to 0.27 dex. Even after the X-ray luminosity is corrected for the cool core, the scatter caused by the presence of cool cores dominates for the low-mass systems. The scatter caused by the non-cool-core clusters does not strongly depend on the mass range, and becomes dominant in the high-mass regime. The observed L-sigma relation agrees with the self-similar prediction, matches that of a simulated sample with AGN feedback disregarding six clusters with <45 cluster members with spectroscopic redshifts, and shows a common trend of increasing scatter toward the low-mass end, i.e., systems with sigma<500km/s. A comparison of observations with simulations indicates an AGN-feedback-driven impact in the low-mass regime. The best fits to the $L-M_{\rm gas}$ relations for the disturbed clusters and undisturbed clusters in the observational sample closely match those of the simulated samples with and without AGN feedback, respectively. This suggests that one main cause of the scatter is AGN activity providing feedback in different phases, e.g., during a feedback cycle. Independent of established data centers, and partly for my own research, I have been collecting the tabular data from nearly 1500 articles concerned with radio sources. Optical character recognition (OCR) was used to recover tables from nearly 600 of these. Tables from only 44 percent of these articles are available in the CDS or CATS catalog collections. This fraction is 62 percent for articles with over 100 sources. Surprisingly, these fractions are not better for articles published electronically since 2001, perhaps partly due to the fact that often tabular data are published in formats not useful for direct machine reading. The databases Simbad and NED recognize only about 60 percent of the bibliographic references corresponding to the existing electronic radio source lists, and the number of objects associated with these references is much smaller still. Both, object databases like NED and Simbad, as well as catalog browsers (VizieR, CATS) need to be consulted to obtain the most complete information on radio sources. More human resources at the data centers and better collaboration between authors, referees, editors, publishers, and data centers are required to improve the flow of tabular data from journals to public databases. Current efforts within the Virtual Observatory (VO) project, to provide retrieval and analysis tools for different types of published and archival data stored at various sites, should be balanced by an equal effort to recover and include large amounts of published data not currently available in this way. We searched the literature for radio images and fluxes of brightest cluster members (BCMs) in 1169 Abell clusters, selected on the basis of their BM or RS type or on textual notes in the Abell catalog indicating the presence of dominant galaxies. We inspected the images of existing radio surveys (NVSS, SUMSS, FIRST, WENSS, etc.) and used the CATS and VizieR catalog browsers, as well as additional literature, to collect radio fluxes and radio morphologies for 1423 BCMs. We found 578 (41%) of these BCMs with detected radio emission, of which 223 are detected at only a single frequency. Using the survey images and published high-resolution images, we estimated the best available position angle for the innermost radio structure and for the largest angular size of each source. DSS images were used to obtain the orientation of the optical major axis of the outer envelope of the BCMs, and the acute difference angle between major optical and radio axes was derived for 102 objects. Its distribution shows a similar bimodality as reported previously for a larger BCM sample, although KS tests do not distinguish them from uniform ones. The shape of the distribution is independent of optical ellipticity, optical morphological type and largest linear radio size of the objects. In order to find further clusters with dominant central galaxies, the above-mentioned criteria need to be relaxed. There is at most marginal evidence for a relation between powerful high-redshift radio galaxies and dominant galaxies of low-z clusters when comparing their radio-optical alignment angle. A large sample of Abell clusters of galaxies, selected for the likely presence of a dominant galaxy, is used to study the dynamical properties of brightest cluster members (BCMs). From visual inspection of Digitized Sky Survey images combined with redshift data we identify 1426 candidate BCMs in 1221 redshift components in 1169 different Abell clusters, the largest such sample published so far. By our own morphological classification we find ~92% of these BCMs to be early-type galaxies, and 48% of cD type. We confirm previous findings based on much smaller samples, namely that a large fraction of BCMs have significant peculiar velocities. For a subsample of 452 clusters with at least 10 measured radial velocities, we find a median BCM peculiar velocity of 32% of their host clusters' radial velocity dispersion. This suggests that most BCMs are not at rest in the potential well of their clusters, and that the phenomenon is thus not a special trait of clusters hosting cD galaxies. We show that the peculiar velocity of the BCM is independent of cluster richness and only slightly dependent on the Bautz-Morgan type. We also find a weak trend for the peculiar velocity to rise with the cluster velocity dispersion. The strongest dependence is with the morphological type of the BCM: cD galaxies tend to have lower relative peculiar velocities than elliptical galaxies. This result points to a connection between the formation of the BCMs and that of their clusters. Our data are qualitatively consistent with the merging-groups scenario, where BCMs in clusters formed first in smaller subsystems comparable to compact groups of galaxies. For over four decades, synchrotron-radiating sources have played a series of pathfinding roles in the study of galaxy clusters and large scale structure. Such sources are uniquely sensitive to the turbulence and shock structures of large-scale environments, and their cosmic rays and magnetic fields often play important dynamic and thermodynamic roles. They provide essential complements to studies at other wavebands. Over the next decade, they will fill essential gaps in both cluster astrophysics and the cosmological growth of structure in the universe, especially where the signatures of shocks and turbulence, or even the underlying thermal plasma itself, are otherwise undetectable. Simultaneously, synchrotron studies offer a unique tool for exploring the fundamental question of the origins of cosmic magnetic fields. This work will be based on the new generation of m/cm-wave radio telescopes now in construction, as well as major advances in the sophistication of 3-D MHD simulations., Comment: 8 pages, 5 figures.
