Abstract

A horizon scan was conducted to identify emerging and intensifying issues for biodiversity conservation in South Africa over the next 5-10 years. South African biodiversity experts submitted 63 issues of which ten were identified as priorities using the Delphi method. These priority issues were then plotted along axes of social agreement and scientific certainty, to ascertain whether issues might be "simple" (amenable to solutions from science alone), "complicated" (socially agreed upon but technically complicated), "complex" (scientifically challenging and significant levels of social disagreement) or "chaotic" (high social disagreement and highly scientifically challenging). Only three of the issues were likely to be resolved by improved science alone, while the remainder require engagement with social, economic and political factors. Fortunately, none of the issues were considered chaotic. Nevertheless, strategic communication, education and engagement with the populace and policy makers were considered vital for addressing emerging issues.

Abstract

To support and scale up global restoration efforts, the United Nations (UN) has proclaimed 2021–2030 the "UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration." The Decade offers significant opportunities for and challenges to restoration, in particular for Africa, a continent that has a large need and potential for restoration. We thus argue that the Decade must be a success in and for Africa, and for this to happen, opportunities and challenges to achieving its goals must be promptly identified, and considered in the planning and implementation of restoration. Here, we outline six key areas that should be considered at a strategic level by African countries during the Decade. These are: (1) ensuring effective oversight and governance relevant to Africa; (2) translating the goals to meet the African context; (3) making the case for restoration amid multiple development demands; (4) growing an African restoration community of practice based on regional need; (5) collaborating to improve restoration outcomes; and (6) establishing an Africa‐relevant evidence base for restoration. We believe that these six key areas—even though they are not all novel—are currently not addressed at a level that matches the scale of the problem on the continent. Although the specific actions to be taken under each key area are dependent on the restoration context, integrating these key areas in the planning and implementation of restoration efforts will likely lead to improved restoration outcomes during the Decade. Abstract

Functional traits have been proposed as a more mechanistic way than species data alone to connect biodiversity to ecosystem processes and function in ecological research. Recently, this framework has also been broadened to include connections of traits to ecosystem services. While many links between traits and ecosystem processes/functions are easily and logically extended to regulating, supporting, and provisioning services, connections to cultural services have not yet been dealt with in depth. We argue that addressing this gap may involve a renegotiation of what have traditionally been considered traits, and a targeted effort to include and expand upon efforts to address traits-cultural ecosystem services links in traits research. Traits may also offer a better way to explore the recognition and appreciation of biodiversity. Drawing upon examples from outside the explicit traits literature, we present a number of potential connections between functional traits and cultural ecosystem services for attention in future research. Finally, we explore considerations and implications of employing a traits approach in urban areas, and examine how connections between traits and ecosystem services could be developed as indicators in a research and management context to generate a robust and resilient supply of ecosystem services.

Abstract

"There is an ecology that is particular to the urban. Urban ecological systems are deeply situated in the functioning of society, and as such have unique drivers and selection pressures. What has emerged in recent work is a complex of in- and of- city ecologies which strive to address sustainability at multiple scales, often in the context of joint anthropogenic and conservation agendas. In the City of Cape Town there are multiple demands on urban land use to meet development and conservation needs. The consequences of an unjust history are still very much evident in the City of Cape Town today where development discrepancies are acute and the demand for short term delivery high. The City is also host to exceptional, and geographically restricted, biodiversity, on a scale that gives it international conservation attention. Like other cities around the world, Cape Town has seen phenomenal population growth in the last century, growing from just over 630,000 in 1951, to 3.7 million today. This developing City, situated in the south, with its myriad of social and environmental issues, playing out at various scales, makes Cape Town both a relevant and exciting place to further the field of urban ecology."

48. A biogeographic analysis of the seaweed flora of the west coast of southern Africa, from Lüderitz to Cape Agulhas

Abstract

A biogeographic analysis of the seaweed flora of the area from Lüderitz to Cape Agulhas was undertaken. Biogeographic patterns were reviewed across 15 geographic regions. A TWINSPAN analysis showed a clear division of the area into two separate species communities. These two communities are the Benguela province, and the western overlap region between the Benguela and Agulhas provinces. The western overlap region was found to be the most diverse. Diversity was shown to decrease with a decrease in latitude. Patterns in endemism among the brown seaweeds follow this trend. In contrast to this, red and green endemics increase with a decrease in latitude. Shore distribution patterns were reviewed, and demonstrated an increase in diversity with a progression down the shore. Among the red seaweeds, this increase, with greater depth was considerable. Species distribution patterns in both shore and shore pool zones were found to follow the same pattern, except for a drop in species in the subtidal fringe pools, which this study concluded was a meaningless concept. These results have been reviewed in relation to present conservation areas along this shore, and future recommendations were made for location of sites for the conservation of seaweed. These were the formation of reserves between Lüderitz and Port Nolloth, between Yzerfontein and Melkbosstrand, and from Scarborough to Cape Hangklip. In some of these areas existing reserves need to make policy adjustments while in others reserves need to be established for the conservation of both diversity and uniqueness of seaweed species.

49. The competitive dynamics of two Protea shrubs growing in a mixed fynbos stand

Abstract

Patterns of segregation among Protea species were investigated. Interspecific competition was studied as a cause of these patterns. Two different methods were used for measuring competition in a mixed stand of P. lepidocarpodendron and P. corona/a growing on the Cape Peninsula. These were the plot-based averaging method, which considers stand density, and the nearest neighbour approach, which considers competitive impacts as a function of the immediate neighbouring plant. Both methods demonstrated negligible interspecific, and strong intraspecific competitive effects on fecundity. However strong interspecific competition appears to be occurring at earlier stages of the life cycle and may account for habitat segregation of P. coronata and P. lepidocarpodendron. P. lepidocarpodendron juveniles appear to outgrow and suppress P. coronata plants. Survivors of this interaction grow to full maturity, giving an apparent lack of species interactions when measured in terms of fecundity. The same results were demonstrated in a mixed stand of P. lepidocarpodendron and H. suaveolens, where H. suaveolens suppresses P. lepidocarpodendron. The study indicates the importance of shrub architecture in reducing species interactions, and juvenile phase properties in determining competitive displacement. Soil preferences and variable fire responses between the species were studied in an attempt to explain the restricted distribution of the stronger competitor, P. lepidocarpodendron at the study site. No conclusions were reached, but the restriction of this species from certain sites appears to be a fire response.
