The differential growth and yield response of plant species to rising carbon dioxide concentrations and climatic change may alter species diversity within biomes. The Pampa Biome in South America is an important grassland biome of agronomic and environmental importance.

The objective of this work was to qualify the improvement of the physical properties of the soil and the reduction of weeds by combining the management of the superficial cover associated with a strategy of physical improvement soil in the drilling, seeking the maintenance of the no-tillage system. The experiment was carried out in the 2015/16 and 2017/18 harvests, using a randomized block design in a two-factorial scheme (3 2) with three managements of the ground cover (chopped, rolled and natural) and two depths of planter’s shank (7 and 12 cm). Counts and identification of weeds emerged in the row and between the lines of the soybean crop at 20 and 40 days after emergence, bulk density, mechanical resistance of the soil to penetration and total soil porosity in the flowering of the soybean culture were measured. The management of the straw cover combined with the depth of action of the planter shank influenced the emergence of weeds, as well as, the increase in the depth of the furrow improvement of the physical environment of the soil in the sowing line, reducing penetration resistance, bulk density and increasing total porosity.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects sowing systems and fertilizer application systems on the incidence of weeds and on yield components in soybean crops. Two experiments were conducted in soils with different fertility levels. An experimental design in split-plot was used; the plots consisted of four sowing systems: crossed sowing (0.45×0.45 m), and spacings between rows of 0.35 m, 0.175 m, and 0.45 m; and the subplots consisted of fertilizer application systems: application in the sowing row, broadcast fertilizer application at sowing, and no fertilizer application. The variables evaluated were: grain yield, 1000-grain weight, and weed incidence at 30 and 50 days after sowing (DAS). The weed incidence at 30 DAS was lower when using spacing between rows of 0.45 m, which was correlated with the lower turning of the soil surface layer. The plant spacing between rows of 0.175 m resulted in a lower competition with weeds at 50 DAS and in a higher shading, generating higher grain yields. The fertilizer application in the sowing row resulted in a higher grain yield and 1000-grain weight. The sowing system affects the weed population dynamics, which directly affects the grain yield of soybean crops. Este estudo teve por objetivo avaliar os efeitos de sistemas de semeadura e de aplicação de fertilizantes sobre a incidência de plantas daninhas e componentes de rendimento na cultura da soja. Dois experimentos foram realizados em áreas com níveis distintos de fertilidade. O delineamento experimental utilizado foi blocos ao acaso em parcelas subdivididas, o tratamento principal foi quatro sistemas de semeadura, sendo: sistema de semeadura cruzada (0,45x0,45 m); sistema de espaçamento entre linha reduzido de 0,35 m, 0,175 m e 0,45 m. Como subparcelas foram três sistemas de aplicação de fertilizantes, sendo: aplicado na linha de semeadura, lanço no momento da semeadura e sem aplicação de fertilizante. As variáveis analisadas foram: produtividade, massa de mil grãos e incidência de plantas daninhas aos 30 e 50 dias após a semeadura (DAS). Nos 30 DAS, a incidência foi menor no espaçamento entre linhas 0,45 m, fato correlacionado com o menor revolvimento da camada superficial do solo. O arranjo de planta no espaçamento entre linha de 0,175 m proporcionou menor competição entre plantas daninhas aos 50 DAS e maior sombreamento, resultando em maior rendimento de grãos. A aplicação do fertilizante na linha causou maior rendimento e massa de mil grãos. O sistema de semeadura afeta a dinâmica populacional de plantas daninhas que teve influencia direta no rendimento da cultura da soja.

A cultura do milho e uma importante fonte de alimentacao para cadeia produtiva animal do estado de Santa Catarina. A ocorrencia de plantas daninhas pode reduzir drasticamente a produtividade de graos da cultura. O objetivo do presente trabalho foi determinar o controle de plantas daninhas na cultura do milho. O trabalho foi realizado em duas safras em delineamento blocos casualizados com arranjo subdividido com tres repeticoes. A parcela principal consistiu da primeira aplicacao de herbicidas (sem sequencial) e a subparcela da aplicacao sequencial do mesmo herbicida aplicado anteriormente (com sequencial). Os herbicidas utilizados foram glyphosate, paraquat + diuron, e a mistura de tanque com glyphosate com bentazon, metribuzin, imazapyr + imazapic, iodosulfuron-methyl, atrazine + S-metolachlor, 2,4-D, imazethapyr, triclopyr, halosulfuron e diuron + sulfentrazone. Avaliou-se o numero de plantas de Cyperus rotundus , folha larga e folha estreita por m² e a produtividade de graos de milho. A mistura glyphosate + imazethaphyr foi eficiente para ambas as safras no controle de plantas folha larga, folha estreita e Cyperus rotundus . Para a safra 2018/19 a mistura glyphosate + sulfentrazone + diuron apresentou controle satisfatorio, entretanto esse tratamento nao foi seletivo para a cultura do milho. O herbicida glyphosate e glyphosate + triclopyr nao se mostrou eficiente em ambas as safras para o controle de Cyperus rotundus .

RESUMO: Popularmente conhecida como pata de elefante ou sussuaiá, Elephantopus mollis, é uma espécie que recentemente surgiu como uma planta daninha em lavouras de cultivos de grãos. Objetivou-se com este estudo avaliar a sensibilidade diferencial de biótipos de E. mollis oriundos de áreas agrícolas e não agrícolas e determinar as melhores combinações de herbicidas aplicados em diferentes estádios de desenvolvimento para o controle desta espécie. Foram realizados três experimentos. No experimento de sensibilidade diferencial foram utilizados dez herbicidas em dois biótipos em duas fases de desenvolvimento. O experimento de dose resposta foi conduzido com oito doses de sete herbicidas. O experimento a campo foi realizado em uma área que apresenta problemas com a planta daninha para validar os resultados dos experimentos anteriores. O biótipo oriundo de área agrícola apresentou menor sensibilidade aos herbicidas quando comparado ao biótipo oriundo de área não agrícola. Os herbicidas de contato inicialmente apresentam controle superior, mas logo a planta apresenta rebrote em função de gemas presentes no colo da planta. A aplicação isolada de 2,4-D com doses entre 1005 e 1675 g e.a ha-1 possui controle de 25%. Quando o 2,4-D é seguido da aplicação de paraquat (400 g i.a ha-1) o controle passa a ser entre 51 e 68%. O melhor tratamento para o controle de plantas desenvolvidas é a mistura de 2,4-D + glyphosate (1340 + 1080 g e.a ha-1) com aplicação sequencial de paraquat. ABSTRACT: Elephantopus mollis, popularly known as elephant paw or sussuaiá, is a species that has recently emerged as a weed affecting grain crops. This study aimed to evaluate the differential sensitivity of biotypes of E. mollis obtained from agricultural and nonagricultural areas and to determine the best combinations of herbicides applied at different stages of development for controlling this species. Three experiments were conducted. In the differential sensitivity experiment, 10 herbicides were used in 2 biotypes in 2 stages of development. The dose-response experiment was conducted using 8 doses of 7 herbicides. The field experiment was conducted in an area with weed issues to validate the results of previous experiments. The biotype from the agricultural area showed lower sensitivity to herbicides than the biotype from the nonagricultural area. The contact herbicides initially presented better control; however, the weed shortly showed re-growth due to the presence of buds in the plant crown. Isolated application of 2.4-D amine at doses between 1005 and 1675 g a.e. ha−1 demonstrated 25% control. When 2,4-D amine was followed by paraquat application (400 g a.i. ha−1), the control observed was between 51% and 68%. The best treatment for the control of completely developed weeds is 2,4-D amine + glyphosate mixture (1340 + 1080 g a.e. ha−1), followed by sequential paraquat application.

In view of the rapid evolution of Conyza sumatrensis populations resistant to glyphosate, it is necessary to understand the genetic diversity aimed to improve strategies for managing this weed. We investigated the genetic dissimilarity among 15 biotypes of C. sumatrensis from different geographic regions using microsatellite loci. The biotypes, were cultivated in a greenhouse to obtain vegetal material for DNA extraction. Nineteen microsatellite markers (SSR), were developed for C. sumatrensis biotypes. The genetic dissimilarity was estimated by the Jaccard coefficient (JC) and the biotypes grouped by the UPGMA method. The results demonstrated a high dissimilarity (JC = 7.14 to 82.62) of the analyzed material, with the biotypes forming five groups, being one group formed just by the susceptible biotype and in the others grouped by biotypes from distinct locations in the same group The high genetic diversity of C. sumatrensis indicates that the biotypes may show different responses to different management strategies, and that the mechanisms of resistance to herbicides and characteristics of evolution of populations due to adaptability may be some of the factors involved in the genetic variability of the species. Diante do exposto, objetivou-se com este trabalho investigar a dissimilaridade genética entre 15 biótipos de C. sumatrensis de diferentes regiões geográficas usando marcadores moleculares microssatélites. Os biótipos foram cultivados em casa de vegetação, para obtenção de material vegetal para extração de DNA. Dezenove marcadores microssatélites (SSR) foram desenvolvidos para os biótipos de C. sumatrensis. A dissimilaridade genética foi estimada pelo coeficiente de Jaccard (JC), e os biótipos, agrupados pelo método UPGMA. Os resultados demonstraram alta dissimilaridade (JC = 7,14 a 82,62) do material analisado, com os biótipos formando cinco grupos. A alta diversidade genética de C. sumatrensis indica que os biótipos podem apresentar distintas respostas a diferentes estratégias de manejo e que os mecanismos de resistência a herbicidas podem ser um dos fatores envolvidos na variabilidade genética das espécies. The objective of this work was to investigate the resistance mechanism of glyphosate-resistant C. sumatrensis biotypes by determining the expression levels of the constitutive gene epsps and two ABC transport protein-coding genes designated m7 and m11 with RT-qPCR. Two biotypes of C. sumatrensis were evaluated: one resistant and one susceptible to glyphosate. The treatments consisted of the absence or application of two doses of glyphosate (1,080 and 8,640 g a.e. ha-1). Plant leaves were collected at 1 and 4 days after herbicide application. No difference was observed in epsps gene expression between the studied biotypes. The expression of the m7 and m11 genes revealed that both genes had higher relative expression in the resistant biotype with the application of glyphosate at both doses. The overexpression of the m7 and m11 genes in the resistant biotype treated with glyphosate reveals that these genes play a role in herbicide resistance. These genes may be involved in the sequestration of glyphosate into the vacuole lumen in the resistant C. sumatrensis biotype studied. This work investigates the extraction process of polyphenols (phenolic acids and flavonoids) from Goldenberry using pressurized ethanol. The influence of pressure (100 and 200 bar), flow rate (1–3 mL min−1) and time (0–60 min) on the antioxidant capacity (DPPH) and chemical composition were evaluated. Results indicated that the highest antioxidant potentials were obtained at 10 min and ranged from 34.01% to 76.33%. Gallic acid and ellagic acid were extracted at 100 bar and 200 bar, respectively, regardless of the flow. On the other hand, caffeic acid, rutin and mangiferin were extracted in all conditions, regardless of the flow and pressure applied. In general, high antioxidant capacities were modulated by specific experimental conditions and the value may not be related only to content, but probably due to the presence of some compounds with strong power of radical scavenging (DPPH).

Given the importance of soybean to the global economy and as a food source, improving crop management techniques is integral to obtaining higher yields. As such, this study aimed to assess the yield of soybean cultivars as a function of different glyphosate salt formulations, doses and application times. Two field experiments were conducted simultaneously using a randomized block design and 3x4x2 factorial scheme, with three repetitions. Factor A consisted of three glyphosate formulations: isopropylamine salt (Roundup Original®), ammonium salt (Roundup WG®), and potassium salt (Zapp Qi®), factor B four application times: 0, 14, 28, 42 days after planting (DAP), and factor C two doses: the recommended dose of 720 grams of acid equivalent per hectare and twice that (1440 grams of acid equivalent per hectare). There was no difference between the glyphosate salts for the BMX Ativa RR® cultivar, but yields of BMX Apolo RR® submitted to ammonium salt were 28% higher than those recorded for the other salts studied. Glyphosate potassium salt resulted in lower soybean yields. Potassium salt application between 14 and 28 DAP caused greater toxicity in both the soybean cultivars analyzed. Diante da importância da cultura da soja tanto na economia mundial quanto para a alimentação, a melhoria das técnicas de cultivo torna-se um ponto fundamental na obtenção de maiores produtividades. Desta forma o objetivo do trabalho foi avaliar a produtividade de cultivares de soja sob a influência da aplicação de diferentes sais de glyphosate, doses e épocas de aplicação. Dois experimentos de campo foram realizados simultaneamente em delineamento de blocos casualizados com arranjo trifatorial (3x4x2) com três repetições. O fator A consistiu de três formulações de glyphosate: sal de isopropilamina (Roundup Original®), sal de amônio (Roundup WG®), sal de potássio (Zapp Qi®). O fator B consistiu de quatro épocas de aplicação: 0, 14, 28, 42 dias após a semeadura (DAS). O fator C consistiu em duas doses: a dose recomendada de 720 gramas de equivalente ácido por hectare e duas vezes a dose recomendada com 1440 gramas de equivalente ácido por hectare. Para a cultivar BMX Ativa RR® não se observou diferença quanto aos sais, porém a cultivar BMX Apolo RR® submetida a aplicação de sal de amônio demostrou uma produtividade 28% superior em relação aos demais sais. O glyphosate na formulação sal de potássio apresentou redução da produtividade da cultura da soja. Aplicações de glyphosate na formulação sal de potássio realizadas entre os 14 e 28 dias após a semeadura causam maior toxidez em ambas cultivares de soja utilizadas. &nbsp

The combined use of desiccant and residual herbicides is a common management practice under no-tillage systems. However, the effect of desiccant herbicides and mulch on the leaching of residual herbicide is unknown. This study aimed at assessing the leaching of the S-metolachlor herbicide applied to ryegrass sequentially or in association with paraquat or glyphosate. A randomized blocks design was used, with four repetitions and treatments distributed over split-plots. The desiccant herbicides paraquat (600 g ha-1) or glyphosate (720 g ha-1) were used in the main plot, while S-metolachlor (2,800 g ha-1) was applied sequentially or in association with the desiccant herbicides in the subplots. There was also a control containing only desiccant herbicide, with no application of residual herbicide. The type of desiccant did not affect the leaching of the residual herbicide. In addition, the chosen method to apply the residual herbicide, sequentially or in association with the desiccant, did not impact the S-metolachlor behavior in the soil. The bioavailable concentration in the soil, 25 days after the application, was 90 g a.i. ha-1, at a depth of 18 cm. RESUMO A associação de herbicidas dessecantes com herbicidas residuais constitui manejo comum, em áreas sob semeadura direta. Entretanto, não se conhece o efeito do herbicida dessecante e da palhada sobre a lixiviação do herbicida residual. Objetivou-se determinar a lixiviação do herbicida S-metolachlor, aplicado sequencialmente ou associado a paraquat ou glyphosate, sobre azevém. Utilizou-se delineamento em blocos casualizados, com quatro repetições, sendo os tratamentos distribuídos em parcelas subdivididas. Nas parcelas principais, foram alocados os herbicidas dessecantes paraquat (600 g ha-1) ou glyphosate (720 g ha-1) e, nas subparcelas, S-metolachlor (2.800 g ha-1) aplicado sequencialmente ou associado aos herbicidas dessecantes, assim como uma testemunha contendo apenas herbicida dessecante, sem aplicação do herbicida residual. O tipo de herbicida dessecante não interferiu na lixiviação do herbicida residual. Além disso, a modalidade de aplicação do herbicida residual, sequencialmente ou em associação ao dessecante, não afetou o comportamento do S-metolachlor no solo. A concentração biodisponível no solo, aos 25 dias após a aplicação, foi de 90 g i.a. ha-1, à profundidade de 18 cm.

Several studies have expressed concerns about the effects of gene flow from transgenic herbicide‐resistant crops to their wild relatives, but no major problems have been observed. This review describes a case study in which what has been feared in transgenics regarding gene flow has actually changed biodiversity and people's lives. Nontransgenic imidazolinone‐resistant rice (IMI‐rice) cultivars increased the rice grain yield by 50% in southern Brazil. This increase was beneficial for life quality of the farmers and also improved the regional economy. However, weedy rice resistant to imidazolinone herbicides started to evolve three years after the first use of IMI‐rice cultivars. Population genetic studies indicate that the herbicide‐resistant weedy rice was mainly originated from gene flow from resistant cultivars and distributed by seed migration. The problems related with herbicide‐resistant weedy rice increased the production costs of rice that forced farmers to sell or rent their land. Gene flow from cultivated rice to weedy rice has proven to be a large agricultural, economic, and social constraint in the use of herbicide‐resistant technologies in rice. This problem must be taken into account for the development of new transgenic or nontransgenic rice technologies.

The herbicide nicosulfuron is an important tool for weed control in maize crops; however, its incorrect use can cause yield losses to crops due to its high toxicity. The objective of this work was to evaluate the efficiency of using herbicide safener to increase selectivity of nicosulfuron to maize crops. The experiment was conducted in field conditions, and the treatments consisted of dose-response curves, using nicosulfuron at rates of 0, 15, 30, 45, and 60 g ha-1, applied with safener and/or malathion to maize crops at the V5-V6 stage. The use of organophosphorus insecticides such as malathion decrease the selectivity of nicosulfuron to maize crops. Rates of up to 60 g ha-1 were selective to the maize crops when using nicosulfuron or nicosulfuron + safener. However, plant height decreased 0.19 and 0.91 cm for each gram of nicosulfuron in the treatments nicosulfuron + safener + malathion, and nicosulfuron + malathion, respectively, at 28 days after the application. The phytotoxicity increased 0.19% and 0.97% in the treatments nicosulfuron + safener + malathion and nicosulfuron + malathion, respectively. The number of grains per row and grain yield were affected by the treatments with nicosulfuron + malathion, presenting decreases of 0.09 grains and 52 kg ha-1, respectively. Thus, adding safener to the herbicide mixture increases the selectivity of nicosulfuron to maize crops, decreases damages regarding plant height and phytotoxicity, and prevents effects of the herbicide on the number of grains per row and grain yield, up to the rate of 60 g ha-1.

The use of ACCase-inhibiting herbicides without the correct addition of an adjuvant is a major cause of inefficient poaceous weed control. As such, this study aimed to assess the efficiency of a new clethodim/adjuvant formulated mixture in postemergence weed control for soybean crops. Two field experiments were conducted in the 2015/16 and 2016/17 growing seasons. A randomized block design, consisting of ten treatments with four repetitions, was used. The treatments and doses were: clethodim (108 g a.i. ha-1) + Lanzar® (0.5%), clethodim (108 g a.i. ha-1) + Nimbus® (0.5%), clethodim/adjuvant formulation at doses of (84 g a.i. ha-1), (96 g a.i. ha-1), (108 g a.i. ha-1), (120 g a.i. ha-1), (132 g a.i. ha-1), and (144 g a.i. ha-1), and a control with and without weeding. The formulated clethodim/adjuvant mixture showed high control at 7 days after application (DAA) in the 2015/16 growing season. At 28 DAA, formulation doses of 108 g a.i. ha-1 and higher exhibited superior weed control and the highest crop yields. Therefore, the use of correct adjuvant or formulated mixture is essential to increase the efficiency of clethodim herbicide.

A 3-year field study was conducted to assess the potential for using pre-emergent (PRE) herbicides tank mixed with glyphosate as a means of controlling weed species in soybean. In 2011/12, 2012/13 and 2013/14 growing sessions soybean cultivar Brasmax Apollo RR was planted under residues of rye. The herbicide treatments glyphosate (gly) (1,296 g a.i. ha-1), gly + S-metolachlor (1,296 + 1,920), gly + imazaquin (1,296 +161), gly + pendimethalin (1,296 + 1,000), gly + metribuzin (1,296 + 480), gly + 2.4-D amine (1,296 + 1,209) was applied in pre-emergence (PRE) over rye crop residues two days before soybean sowing. In addition, full season weed-free and weedy control plots were included. Gly + S-metolachlor and gly + pendimethalin reduced the horseweed density from 48 to 3 and 6 plants m-2, respectively. The mix containing gly + metribuzin and gly + 2.4-D amine and gly applied alone had no effect in the horseweed control. The mix containing gly + metribuzin, gly + 2.4-D amine, gly + imazaquin and gly applied alone had no effect in the crabgrass control. In contrast gly + S-metolachlor and gly + pendimethalin reduced the crabgrass density from 70 to 0 and 1 plant m-2, respectively. The soybean yield was higher with weed-free, S-metolachlor and metribuzin treatments. The use of an herbicide with residual effect had impact on weed management and soybean yield. In conclusion, a greater control of horseweed and crabgrass occurred when S-metolachlor or pendimethalin was applied PRE. RESUMO: Um estudo de campo de três safras foi conduzido para avaliar o potencial de uso de herbicidas pré-emergentes misturados com glyphosate como meio de controlar as espécies de plantas daninhas na cultura da soja. Nas safras 2011/12, 2012/13 e 2013/14, o cultivar Brasmax Apollo RR foi semeado sob resíduos de colheita de centeio. Os tratamentos herbicidas foram o glyphosate (gly) (1.296 g i.a. ha-1), gly + S-metolachlor (1.296 + 1.920), gly + imazaquin (1.296 + 161), gly + pendimethalin (1.296 + 1.000), gly + metribuzin (1.296 + 480) e gly + 2,4-D (1.296 + 1.209) aspergidos em pré-emergência (PRE) dois dias antes da semeadura da soja. Além disso, foram incluídas as testemunhas capinada e sem capina. Gly + S-metolachlor e gly + pendimethalin reduziram a densidade de buva de 48 para 3 e 6 plantas m-2, respectivamente. A mistura contendo gly + metribuzin e gly + 2,4-D amina e o gly aplicado isoladamente não apresentaram controle dessa planta daninha. As misturas contendo gly + metribuzin, gly + 2,4-D amina, gly + imazaquin e gly aplicado isoladamente não mostraram qualquer efeito no controle de milhã. Em contraste, gly + S-metolachlor e gly + pendimethalin reduziram a densidade de milhã de 70 para 0 e 1 planta m-2, respectivamente. O rendimento de soja foi maior na testemunha sem capina, gly + S-metolachlor e gly + metribuzin. O uso de herbicida com efeito residual teve impacto no manejo de plantas daninhas e na produtividade da soja. Os maiores níveis de controle de buva e milhã ocorreram com os herbicidas S-metolachlor e metribuzin.

As plantas daninhas possuem elevada variabilidade genética, e principalmente por este motivo, são adaptadas a ambientes com intensa atividade humana. Embora o controle de plantas daninhas tenha evoluído de maneira positiva nos últimos anos, elas continuam a interferir na produção agrícola. O objetivo desta revisão bibliográfica é apresentar a contribuição da biologia molecular nos estudos aplicados a herbologia. Há lacunas entre o que aprendemos sobre genômica de plantas daninhas e como esses conhecimentos poderiam nos auxiliar no manejo e melhorar a competividade de culturas agrícolas frente às plantas daninhas. Muitos estudos na área da ciência das plantas daninhas podem ser realizados com o emprego de técnicas de biologia molecular, sendo eles: caracterização do genoma de espécies de plantas daninhas, visando à identificação destes com maior acurácia, identificação de espécies resistentes a herbicidas e seu mecanismo de resistência, variabilidade e similaridade genética entre populações de plantas daninhas, identificação de genes envolvidos nos processos de interação entre plantas, dentre outros.

Seed shattering is one of the main traits related with the domestication of cultivated rice and with the invasiveness and persistence of weedy rice. Two independent studies in 2006 have indicated that qSH1 in Japonica and Sh4 in Indica rice are major genes governing this trait. However, a wide variation of seed shattering occurs in weedy rice ecotypes from the same geographic region and even within the same ecotype. The aim of this study was to evaluate the nucleotide variability of known and putative genes related to seed shattering in cultivated rice and to identify and validate new genes related to this trait in weedy rice. The qSH1 gene was not associated with seed shattering in the evaluated genotypes. The nucleotide variability of the genes Os01g0849100 and Os08g0512400, previously identified based on a genome-wide resequencing study, was related to seed shattering in rice. The nucleotide variability of three single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) of the OsXTH8 gene, which is related to cell wall biosynthesis, was not associated with seed shattering. However, the high expression of this gene was related to the occurrence of this trait. This study evaluated jointly a series of genes involved in rice seed shattering and indicated that the genes OsXTH8, Os08g0512400 and Os01g0849100 are important for the regulation of this trait in weedy rice in addition to previously described genes. Seed shattering in weedy rice has a more complex regulation than in cultivated rice where few major genes were identified.

Seed shattering is an evolutionary trait that is essential to the survival of wild and weedy rice. Discovery of the qSH1 gene in rice subspecies Japonica and Sh4 in the rice subspecies Indica indicated the possibility that seed shattering is governed by major genes in a qualitative manner. However, observation of the large variability of seed shattering in weedy rice has led us to hypothesise that other genes related to abscission layer integrity could also be important in the regulation of seed shattering in rice. Gene expression 10 days after pollination and nucleotide composition revealed that qSH1 and Sh4 that are described as major players in seed shattering were not important in weedy rice. High expression of the gene OsCPL1 was positively associated with the occurrence of high seed shattering in weedy rice, which did not concur in previous studies of cultivated rice. This result is related to the absence of four SNPs and an indel in the OsCPL1 gene in weedy rice that are related to seed shattering in previous studies. Analysis of the expression of six genes related to cell wall synthesis/degradation revealed the importance of the genes OsXTH8 and OsCel9D in seed shattering in weedy rice. Therefore, in addition to qSH1 and Sh4, the genes OsCPL1, OsXTH8 and OsCel9D should be considered in studies of rice evolution and in the development of mitigation approaches of gene flow in transgenic rice.

Several red rice biotypes have evolved resistance to imidazolinone herbicides. The origin of resistance has been attributed to gene flow from the herbicide-resistant rice cultivars, but independent evolution of spontaneous mutation can also contribute to the herbicide resistance. The objective of this study was to quantify the occurrence of gene flow and independent selection as the mechanisms of origin of imidazolinone-resistance in red rice to correctly define the management practices for red rice control. Three single nucleotide polymorphism markers were used to identify acetolactate synthase (ALS) gene mutations, and four simple sequence repeat markers were used to identify hybrids of imidazolinone-resistant rice cultivars and red rice. In addition, genetic diversity and population structure analyses were performed. Artificial hybrids were used as controls. Gene flow was the main origin of imidazolinone herbicide resistance, but independent selection occurred in 1.1 % of the evaluated red rice plants. Two red rice plants that independently evolved herbicide resistance had the ALS gene mutation, Gly654Glu. Population structure analysis also indicated intense gene flow from rice cultivars to red rice, but some populations maintained a high genetic identity based on a small amount of gene introgression from the rice cultivars. These results indicate the importance of adopting controls of red rice escapees to avoid gene flow from the imidazolinone-resistant rice, and the necessity of biotechnological approaches to mitigating gene flow in the development of new herbicide-resistant rice cultivars.

Apesar de existirem marcadores moleculares mais específicos, os marcadores microssatélites apresentam grande potencialidade de utilização na área de plantas daninhas devido à sua crescente disponibilização em outras espécies e à qualidade das informações proporcionadas. O uso convencional dos marcadores moleculares microssatélites demanda grande quantidade de trabalho e recursos financeiros. O objetivo deste trabalho foi descrever a técnica da cauda fluorescente como forma de otimização da utilização de marcadores moleculares microssatélites, utilizando como exemplo um estudo de identificação de híbridos entre arroz-vermelho e cultivado. Foram utilizadas como modelo plantas de arroz cultivado, arroz-vermelho e o híbrido originado do cruzamento artificial dessas plantas. A técnica da cauda fluorescente consiste na síntese do iniciador forward com a sequência desejada e a adição da sequência de um iniciador universal, que corresponde à chamada cauda. A detecção da amplificação é realizada em equipamento de eletroforese capilar automatizada, através da utilização de um iniciador universal sintetizado com fluoróforo. O sistema desenvolvido foi eficiente na identificação da hibridização entre arroz cultivado e vermelho e apresenta viabilidade de utilização, por exemplo, em estudos de fluxo gênico da resistência a herbicidas e de caracteres relacionados à adaptação diferencial entre essas plantas. A técnica da cauda fluorescente possibilitou o uso de diversos marcadores moleculares a partir de um único marcador fluorescente e viabilizou a realização das análises em multiplex. O aumento da disponibilidade e do conhecimento de técnicas moleculares pode proporcionar melhor elucidação em vários estudos relacionados a espécies de plantas daninhas que possuem pouca disponibilidade de marcadores moleculares específicos.

The practice of associating non-selective and residual herbicides is becoming increasingly used as it may mitigate problems related to weed resistance to herbicides. This work aimed to evaluate the persistence of the residual herbicide imazaquin when applied simultaneously or in sequence to the non-selective herbicides paraquat and glyphosate, under field conditions and growing chamber, respectively. The experiment was carried out the Agronomic Experimental Station of the Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul (EEA/UFRGS), and at the School of Agronomy of the UFRGS using typical Dystrophic Red Argisol (Ultisol) composed by 28% of clay. The experiments were arranged in a randomized block design, in split-plots with four replications. The non-selective herbicides (paraquat, 600 g ha-1 or glyphosate 720 g ha-1) were applied on the main plots and the residual herbicide imazaquin (300 g ha-1) on the subplots,sequentially or in association with the non-selective herbicides, plus a control, where only a non-selective herbicide was applied. The persistence of imazaquin is longer in the presence of glyphosate when compared to paraquat. No difference was found between simultaneous and sequential application of the non-selective and residual herbicides.

Estratégia de manejo de plantas daninhas pode ser realizada de forma integrada com o método químico na redução da utilização de herbicidas na cultura do milho. O objetivo deste trabalho é avaliar o efeito do manejo integrado do espaçamento entre linhas, ou de híbridos de milho com características morfológicas distintas e redução dos níveis de herbicidas, para controlar plantas daninhas na cultura do milho. O experimento foi instalado em delineamento de blocos ao acaso, com quatro repetições, arranjado em um fatorial 2 x 2 x 5, em que: o primeiro fator foram os híbridos Penta (superprecoce, com folhas mais planas) e Flash (superprecoce com folhas mais eretas); o segundo fator foram os espaçamentos entre linhas de milho (0,45 e 0,9 m) e o terceiro fator os níveis de manejo de plantas daninhas (capinado, sem capina e atrazine + foramsulfurom + iodosulfuron nas doses de 3000+45+3, 2250+33,8+2,3 e 1500+22,5+1,5 g ha-1 i.a.). Foram avaliados a altura e o ângulo foliar vertical das plantas, o número de plantas daninhas e a matéria seca de plantas daninhas por área. O ângulo foliar de plantas de milho torna-se mais planófilo com a adoção de espaçamentos reduzidos entre linhas, mas outras características de plantas de milho estão envolvidas no desempenho dos espaçamentos. O uso do espaçamento de 0,45 m entre linhas não contribui para a redução dos níveis de herbicidas para a cultura, mas sua adoção beneficia o manejo de plantas daninhas e o rendimento de grãos do híbrido Flash, embora não seja vantajosa para o híbrido Penta. Strategies to weed control in maize cultivation can be combined with chemical control to provide reduction of herbicide use. The aim of this work was to evaluate integrated management of plant row reduction, use of corn hybrids with contrasting morphological characteristics and reduction of herbicide levels to weed control. The experiment was carried out in a completely randomized block design with four replications in a 2 x 2 x 5 factorial. The first factor was maize hybrids such as Penta (super-early season maize with flatter vertical leaf angle) and Flash (super-early season maize and more upright vertical leaf angle). The second factor was maize row width (0.45 and 0.90 m) and the third factor was the weed management system (hoeing, no hoeing, and atrazine + foramsulfurom + iodosulfuron at 3000+45+3, 2250+33.8+2.3 and 1500+22.5+1.5 g a.i. ha-1). It was evalued the plant height and vertical leaf of corn plants, the number and dry matter of weeds per area. The vertical leaf angle of corn plants became flatter with the adoption of reduced row spacing, but other characteristics of corn plants were involved in the performance of spacing. The use of the narrow row spacing did not contribute to reducing levels of herbicides, but narrow row spacing benefits ony the weed management and grain yield of hybrid Flash.

Tradicionalmente vista como uma etapa de inocência e aprendizado, a infância tem assumido características diversas nas chamadas narrativas “de favela”. Assim, as crianças pobres, moradoras das periferias das grandes cidades, são apresentadas na ficção como uma contraface dessa noção tradicional de infância. Lembrancinha do Adeus, de Júlio Ludemir, e Cidade de Deus, dePaulo Lins, constroem narrativas em torno de personagens que mantêm apenas vestígios da infância, o que, ao mesmo tempo em que sinaliza especificamente para uma transformação da sociabilidade das crianças, simboliza profundas mudanças sociais.

Objetivou-se com este trabalho avaliar o efeito da integração de redução de espaçamento entre linhas sobre características morfofisiológicas de híbridos e estratégias de manejo químico de plantas daninhas em milho. O experimento foi realizado a campo, em delineamento de blocos casualizados, com quatro repetições, em um fatorial 2 x 2 x 5, em que o primeiro fator representou os híbridos de milho (Sprint, ciclo superprecoce e folhas mais eretas, e Penta, ciclo precoce e folhas mais planas); o segundo, espaçamentos entre linhas de milho (0,45 e 0,90 m); e o terceiro, tratamentos para controle de plantas daninhas: 1. atrazine + simazine (1.500 + 1.500 g i.a. ha-1) em pós-precoce; 2. atrazine + simazine (1.500 + 1.500 g i.a. ha-1), em pós-precoce, complementada por nicosulfuron + atrazine (20 + 750 g i.a. ha-1 ), em pós-tardia; 3. atrazine + simazine (750 + 750 g i.a. ha-1 ), em pós-precoce; 4. testemunha capinada; e 5. apenas nicosulfuron+atrazine (20 + 750 g i.a. ha-1 ), em pós -ardia. O espaçamento de 45 cm favoreceu a infestação de plantas daninhas na linha do milho, enquanto no espaçamento de 90 cm as maiores infestações foram observadas nas entrelinhas da cultura. As aplicações complementares de atrazine+nicosulfuron em pós-tardia foram importantes para controlar plantas daninhas no híbrido Sprint em espaçamento convencional, mas não necessárias para o híbrido Penta, nos espaçamentos utilizados. Observou-se no híbrido Penta que a redução do espaçamento afetou o rendimento de grãos, enquanto para Sprint não foi verificada redução de produtividade. This work was carried out to evaluate the effect of integrating morphophysiological characteristics of hybrids, row spacing reduction and chemical weed management in corn. The experiment was carried out under field conditions, in a randomized complete block design, in a 2 x 2 x 5 factorial scheme, with four replications, with the first factor consisting of corn hybrids (Sprint, too early-maturing and more erect leaves and Penta, early-maturing and more plane leaves),and the second consisting of row spacing (0.45 and 0.90 m) and the third, of the weed control treatments: 1.atrazine + simazine (1.500 + 1.500 g.a.i. ha-1 ) at early post-emergence; 2.atrazine + simazine (1.500 + 1.500 g a.i. ha-1), in early post-emergence, complemented by nicosulfuron+atrazine (20 + 750 g a.i. ha-1 ), at late post-emergence; 3.atrazine+simazine (750 + 750 g a.i. ha-1 ), at early post-emergence; 4.control with weeding; 5. only nicosulfuron+ atrazine (20 + 750 g a.i. ha-1 ), in late post-emergence. The 45 cm spacing favored weeds in the row while in the 90 cm spacing, the greatest weed infestations occurred in the interrows. Complementary applications of atrazine + nicosulfuron were needed to control weeds in the Spring hybrid and conventional row systems, but not to control Penta at the row width used. For the Penta hybrid, reduced spacing decreased corn grain yield, while for the Sprint hybrid, no corn grain yield reduction was observed.

Resistance to acetolactate synthase (ALS)-inhibiting herbicides in Brazil has been documented for six species. The probability to select biotypes of Euphorbia heterophylla (EPPHL) with multiple resistance increases in the same order of magnitude as the use of other herbicides belonging to only one mechanism of action. The objectives of this work were to evaluate the distribution of resistant populations (R) in the states of the Parana and Santa Catarina; to determine the existence of populations of EPHHL with multiple resistance to ALS and PROTOX inhibitors, and to confirm the occurrence of cross resistance to compounds of these mechanisms of action. Seeds of EPHHL of areas with suspected resistance had been sampled in 97 places during 2003. In the greenhouse experiment samples of each population were sprayed with imazethapyr or fomesafen, at only one rate. To identify the resistant ones they were sprayed with different levels of the herbicides imazethapyr and fomesafen. Later they were sprayed with diverse herbicides of the same mechanisms of action to confirm the multiple/cross resistance. There is widespread distribution in the region of populations with resistance to ALS inhibitors. Some biotypes demonstrated resistance to herbicides from the two mechanisms of action. The resistance factor (FR), or the relation of resistance between R and susceptible biotypes, confirms the existence of two biotypes of EPHHL with cross resistance to several herbicides inhibitors of ALS and PROTOX.

Os metabólitos secundários garantem a sobrevivência das plantas em situações adversas. As plantas alteram sua constituição bioquímica a partir do metabolismo primário em resposta à mudanças no ambiente. A produção de metabólitos secundários mitiga os efeitos decorrentes do estresse permitindo o desenvolvimento da planta em situações não ideais. Compostos aleloquímicos são exemplos de metabólitos secundários produzidos por plantas em situação de interferência interespecífica. Quando em estresse por competição, as plantas possuem a capacidade de liberar compostos no ambiente a fim de sinalizar a presença ou inibir o crescimento de plantas vizinhas. As respostas no metabolismo secundário das culturas decorrentes da competição com plantas daninhas alteram a composição química da espécie, resultando em alterações no desenvolvimento e no rendimento. A aplicação de herbicidas também é fonte de alteração no metabolismo secundário pela interrupção de rotas, seja pelo acúmulo de ácidos constituintes ou a formação de compostos não desejados. A revisão atual tem como objetivo mostrar o estado da arte das relações de interferência entre plantas daninhas e as culturas sobre as alterações no metabolismo secundário.

In this work, microwave-assisted extraction (MAE) technique was developed for the extraction of total polyphenols from Physalis angulata. Several parameters of the MAE procedure (ethanol concentration, irradiation power, extraction time and liquid-to-solid ratio) were assessed through an experimental Box-Behnken design (four variables and three levels). Results indicated a variation from 3.74 to 0.03 mg GAE/g of extract (total polyphenol), 7.77 to 0.5 mg/L (gallic acid), 0.55 to 0.27 mg/L (ellagic acid), 0.26 to 0.02 mg/L (caffeic acid), 0.86 to 0.25 mg/L (rutin) and 2.43 to 0.89 mg/L (mangiferin), and different effects were observed depending on the compounds. In summary, MAE may be used as a suitable approach for the selective extraction of total polyphenols from Physalis angulata. Practical Applications Microwave-assisted extraction (MAE) is a potential technique to obtain total phenolic compounds from vegetable sources. This approach increases the yields and reduces the extraction time and the consumption of solvent compared with traditional extraction methods. Extract from Physalis angulata shows high polyphenol content and ethnopharmacological value which may be applied as preservative (in food industry) or due to its biological properties (antioxidant, antipyretic, analgesic and anti-inflammatory).

Dentre os fatores primordiais para a germinação estão a umidade, a temperatura e a aeração do solo. É importante citar que esses fatores são diretamente influenciados pelo estado de compactação do solo ao redor da semente. Objetivou-se, neste trabalho, estudar os efeitos da combinação entre profundidades de semeadura e cargas aplicadas pela roda compactadora da semeadora-adubadora sobre o desenvolvimento da cultura do feijão, em sistema plantio direto. Foi utilizado o esquema fatorial no delineamento em blocos ao acaso, composto por doze tratamentos (três profundidades de semeadura e quatro níveis de cargas aplicadas pela roda compactadora) e quatro repetições. Os resultados mostraram que a profundidade de semeadura influenciou, significativamente, o índice de velocidade de emergência, os estandes inicial e final de plantas e o rendimento da cultura. As diferentes cargas aplicadas pela roda compactadora não influenciaram significativamente as variáveis avaliadas. Among the primordial factors for the germination are humidity, temperature, and aeration of the soil. It is important to mention that these factors are directly influenced by the soil compaction state around the seed. The present paper had the aim of studying the effects of the combination between depths of sowing and loads applied by press wheel of the seeder upon the development of bean culture, in a no-tillage system. Factor schedule was applied to the delineation in random blocks composed by twelve treatments (three depths of sowing and four levels of loads applied by the press wheel) and four replications. The results showed that depth of sowing significantly influenced the index of emergency speed, the initial and final stands of plants and yield of culture. The different loads applied for the press wheel did not significantly influence the evaluated variables.

Diversos biótipos de sagitária (Sagittaria montevidensis Cham. & Schlecht) foram constatados como resistentes a herbicidas inibidores da enzima ALS no Brasil e em outros locais do mundo. Os objetivos deste trabalho foram isolar e sequenciar o gene ALS de sagitária de forma a identificar a ocorrência de mutações relacionadas ao mecanismo de resistência de insensibilidade do local da ação de herbicidas. O material vegetal consistiu de sementes de sagitária coletadas em lavouras de arroz irrigado localizadas na região Sul do Estado de Santa Catarina. Nove pares de sequências nucleotídicas iniciadoras foram desenhadas para a amplificação dos domínios C, A e D do gene ALS. As sequências nucleotídicas dos fragmentos amplificados com quatro pares de oligonucleotídeos inciadores resultaram em amplicons com 360 a 393 nucleotídeos. Essas sequências apresentaram homologia com o gene ALS padrão de Arabdopsis thaliana e arroz, possuindo apenas três mutações de ponto. Uma dessas alterações foi a mutação Pro197Phe, que é relacionada à ocorrência de resistência à herbicida em diversas espécies vegetais. As sequências obtidas evidenciaram que o gene ALS avaliado encontrava-se em heterozigose. Esses resultados sugerem a ocorrência de insensibilidade do local de ação como mecanismo de resistência a herbicidas inibidores de ALS em sagitária. A prevenção e o controle da resistência a herbicidas inibidores da ALS em sagitária devem ser fundamentados na rotação de herbicidas com diferentes mecanismos de ação. California arrowhead (Sagittaria montevidensis Cham. & Schlecht) is an aquatic weed often found in rice paddy fields. Several biotypes of California arrowhead resistant to ALS-inhibiting herbicides were found in Brazil and in several rice fields worldwide. The objective of this study was to sequence the ALS gene of California arrowhead and to identify the occurrence of mutations related to target site insensitivity as the mechanism of herbicide resistance. The plant material consisted of seeds collected in rice paddy fields located in the state of Santa Catarina, Brazil. Nine pairs of primers were designed for the amplification of the domains C, A and D of the ALS gene. PCR reactions with four pairs of primers resulted in amplification of fragments with size close to expected, ranging from 360 to 393 nucleotides. These sequences showed high homology to the standard ALS gene Arabdopsis thaliana and rice having only three point mutations. One of these mutations was Pro197Phe that is related with herbicide resistance in several weeds. The sequences obtained indicated that the ALS gene evaluated was heterozygous. These results suggest the occurrence of insensitivity of the site of action as the mechanism of resistance to ALS-inhibitors herbicides in California arrowhead. The prevention and control of resistance to ALS-inhibitors in California arrowhead should be based on the rotation of herbicides with different mechanisms of action.

Quatro bioensaios, dois em casa de vegetação e dois em laboratório, foram conduzidos com o objetivo de identificar biótipos de Euphorbia heterophylla (EPHHL) com resistência múltipla a inibidores da ALS e da PROTOX. Em casa de vegetação, plantas do biótipo suscetível (S) e dos biótipos 4 e 23, suspeitos de resistência múltipla, foram aspergidas com diferentes doses de imazethapyr e fomesafen. Nos bioensaios em laboratório, sementes dos biótipos S e 4 foram depositadas em placas de Petri contendo diferentes concentrações dos mesmos herbicidas. Curvas de dose-resposta foram ajustadas, utilizando os modelos logístico e polinomial, respectivamente, para os dados obtidos em casa de vegetação e em laboratório. Em casa de vegetação, o fator de resistência (FR) a imazethapyr para o biótipo 4 foi superior a 24, enquanto para o biótipo 23 ele foi de 15. Os FRs a fomesafen foram, respectivamente, de 62 e 39, para os mesmos biótipos. Em um período de 144 horas, concentrações de imazethapyr e fomesafen no bioensaio em laboratório foram capazes de discriminar os crescimentos da parte aérea e radicular dos biótipos de EPHHL com resistência múltipla e S. Os resultados confirmam ser tanto os testes em casa de vegetação quanto os laboratoriais, utilizando placas de Petri, metodologias apropriadas para discriminar biótipos de EPHHL S daqueles com resistência múltipla. Four bioassays were developed under greenhouse and laboratory conditions to identify Euphorbia heterophylla (EPHHL) biotypes with multiple resistance to PROTOX and ALS-inhibiting herbicides. In the greenhouse bioassays, plants of a susceptible (S) biotype and of two biotypes suspected of multiple resistance (#4 and #23) were sprayed using different levels of the herbicides imazethapyr and fomesafen. The laboratory bioassays consisted of a comparative test between biotypes S and #4, exposed to germination in imazethapyr and fomesafen solutions. Dose-response relationships were adjusted using logistic and polynomial models, respectively, for data obtained from greenhouse and laboratory bioassays. For biotype #4, the resistance factor (RF) to imazethapyr was above 24, while for biotype #23 it was 15. FR to fomesafen were, respectively, 62 and 39, for the same biotypes. In the laboratory bioassay, a period of 144 hours was sufficient to discriminate differencial growth response to imazethapyr and fomesafen levels between R and S biotypes. The results confirm that both greenhouse and laboratory tests with Petri dishes are appropriate methodologies to discriminate S and multiple R EPHHL biotypes.

A metabolização dos herbicidas é um dos mecanismos que conferem resistência aos herbicidas em plantas daninhas. Inseticidas organofosforados inibem as enzimas que são responsáveis pela metabolização de herbicidas. O objetivo desse trabalho foi identificar se a metabolização de herbicidas inibidores da PROTOX é a causa da resistência a esse mecanismo de ação em biótipo de Euphorbia heterophylla com resistência múltipla a inibidores da ALS e PROTOX. O delineamento experimental foi o completamente casualizado, com tratamentos organizados em esquema fatorial, com 4 repetições, em que o fator A consistiu dos biótipos de E. heterophylla suscetível (S) e com resistência múltipla a inibidores da ALS e PROTOX (RM), e o fator B correspondeu à aplicação de herbicidas fomesafen e lactofen isolados ou em associação com inseticida organofosforado metamidofós, e testemunha sem aplicação. O biótipo S apresentou maior fitotoxicidade, redução de massa verde e seca em relação ao biótipo RM. No biótipo RM, não houve diferença entre os tratamentos herbicidas, independentemente da associação ou não com o inseticida na maioria das variáveis analisadas. Estes resultados indicam que a associação do inseticida organofosforado metamidofós a herbicidas inibidores da PROTOX não aumenta os níveis de controle do biótipo RM em comparação à aplicação isolada desses herbicidas. Apesar de não serem definitivos, os resultados parecem indicar que a metabolização não é o mecanismo de resistência de E. heterophylla aos herbicidas inibidores da PROTOX.

A evapotranspiração da cultura (ETc) e o coeficiente de cultura (Kc) da alface foram determinados em duas épocas do ano (inverno e outono) usando lisímetros de percolação. Durante o inverno e o outono a ETc média observada foi, respectivamente, 162 mm e 181 mm. O Kc determinado em ambas as épocas do ano atingiu o máximo valor no momento da colheita. No inverno e no outono o valor máximo de Kc foi de aproximadamente 1,40. Este valor é maior do que aqueles recomendados pela FAO (1,00). Pela regressão linear foi verificado que os valores de Kc determinados estão fortemente relacionados com o ciclo de desenvolvimento das plantas.
