Abstract

Carriers of large recurrent copy number variants (CNVs) have a higher risk of developing neurodevelopmental disorders. The 16p11.2 distal CNV predisposes carriers to e.g., autism spectrum disorder and schizophrenia. We compared subcortical brain volumes of 12 16p11.2 distal deletion and 12 duplication carriers to 6882 non-carriers from the large-scale brain Magnetic Resonance Imaging collaboration, ENIGMA-CNV. Abstract

Objective: Adjuvant chemotherapy is often indicated in patients diagnosed with early breast cancer (EBC). Among others, weight gain is one of the observed side effects of both chemotherapy and other cancer treatments; however, the mechanism is not well‐described. In this study, we aimed to assess thyroid function before and shortly after the course of chemotherapy for EBC. Methods: This is a prospective cohort study of women diagnosed with EBC. The main outcome was the thyroid function and body weight before and after completing chemotherapy. Secondary outcomes were the presence of thyroid autoantibodies and treatment radiation dosage. We included 72 patients treated with adjuvant chemotherapy, whereas 59 patients also received supraclavicular locoregional radiotherapy. Triple‐negative breast cancer (BC) patients receiving chemoimmunotherapy were excluded. Results: After the chemotherapy, we observed an increase in thyroid‐stimulating hormone (p = 0.03) and a decrease in free‐thyroxine (p = 0.0006), with no significant weight change. The prevalence of autoimmune thyroiditis was low. On average 3 months post‐chemo, we found no statistically significant difference in the thyroid function of women treated versus not treated with supraclavicular locoregional radiotherapy. Conclusions: Although statistically significant changes in thyroid hormones were observed, this study suggests no obvious clinically significant changes in thyroid function in women with early BC after the course of chemotherapy. The decrease in thyroid function was not related to autoimmunity, non‐thyroidal illness, radiotherapy, or high‐dose corticosteroids. Further studies with a longer follow‐up of thyroid function after adjuvant chemotherapy and supraclavicular locoregional radiotherapy are needed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

30. Consolidation of water-atomized chromium–nickel-alloyed powder metallurgy steel through novel processing routes

Abstract

When processing powder metallurgy (PM) steels, the conventional press and sinter route can reach a relative density up to 95%, which is insufficient for applications when dynamic mechanical performance is critical. In this study, a novel route is demonstrated consisting of cold isostatic pressing (CIP) followed by sintering and capsule-free hot isostatic pressing (HIP), allowing to achieve full density PM steels. Water-atomized steel powder admixed with 2 wt.% Ni was subjected to CIP and followed by sintering in 90N2/10H2atmosphere at 1120 and 1250°C, and in vacuum (10−2mbar) at 1250 and 1350°C, respectively. At the highest explored CIP pressure of 600 MPa, the three high-temperature sintering runs at 1250°C in 90N2/10H2atmosphere and vacuum, and 1350°C in vacuum resulted in relative density of ∼94% and closed surface pores. This condition with necessary closed porosity then allowed subsequent capsule-free HIP after sintering, resulting in full densification of the components.

Abstract

PurposeTo quantify the risk of second primary breast cancer in the contralateral breast (CB) after radiotherapy (RT) for first breast cancer.Methods and materialsThe study population included participants in the Women's Environmental, Cancer, and Radiation Epidemiology study: 708 cases (women with asynchronous bilateral breast cancer) and 1399 controls (women with unilateral breast cancer) counter-matched on radiation treatment. Participants were 1.0 Gy of absorbed dose to the specific quadrant of the CB had a 2.5-fold greater risk for CB cancer than unexposed women (RR = 2.5, 95% CI 1.4-4.5). No excess risk was observed in women >40 years of age. Women 5 years had a RR of 3.0 (95% CI 1.1-8.1), and the dose response was significant (excess RR per Gy of 1.0, 95% CI 0.1-3.0).ConclusionsWomen 1.0 Gy to the CB had an elevated, long-term risk of developing a second primary CB cancer. The risk is inversely related to age at exposure and is dose dependent.

Abstract

This paper presents a stabilized scheme that solves the wave propagation problem in a general bianisotropic, stratified medium. The method utilizes the concept of propagators, i.e., the wave propagation operators that map the total tangential electric and magnetic fields from one plane in the slab to another. The scheme transforms the propagator approach into a scattering matrix form, where a spectral decomposition of the propagator enables separation of the exponentially growing and decaying terms in order to obtain a well-conditioned formulation. Multilayer structures can be handled in a stable manner using the dissipative property of the Redheffer star product for cascading scattering matrices. The reflection and transmission dyadics for a general bianisotropic medium with an isotropic half space on both sides of the slab are presented in a coordinate-independent dyadic notation, as well as the reflection dyadic for a bianisotropic slab with perfect electric conductor backing (PEC). 43. Docker Container Images : Concerns about available container image scanning tools and image security

Abstract

With the growing use of cloud computing and need for resource effectiveness, the use of container technology has increased compared to virtual machines. This is since containers require fewer resources and are significantly faster to start up. A popular containerplatform is Docker which lets users manage and run containers. The containers are run from images that can be downloaded from different sources, Docker Hub being a popular choice. Because of container technology sharing the OS-kernel with the host, there is a great need to increase and monitor the security of containers and the images they are run from. To find vulnerabilities in images, there are image scanning tools available. In this dissertation, we study 5 different image scanning tools and their performance. Twentyfive random images were selected from popular images on Docker Hub and were then scanned for vulnerabilities with the tools in the study. We aimed to answer the following questions: (1) Are there any clear differences between the number of vulnerabilities found by different image vulnerability scanning tools? (2) Are there any differences between the types of vulnerabilities found by different image vulnerability scanning tools? (3) What is the relative effectiveness of different image vulnerability scanning tools? The results show that there are considerable differences between different container image scanning tools regarding the number of found vulnerabilities. We also found that there were differences regarding the severity-grading of found vulnerabilities between the tested tools. When using our proposed metric for calculation of relative effectiveness, we discovered that the tool with the highest relative effectiveness could still miss approximately 39 percent of the vulnerabilities in images. The tool with the lowest relative effectiveness could miss approximately 77 percent of the vulnerabilities in images.

Abstract

Introduction: Breast cancer (BC) is a common type of cancer in women. Advances in therapy options have resulted in higher overall survival rates but side effects of cancer treatment are increasingly in the spotlight. The beneficial effects of anti‐oestrogen therapy with tamoxifen and letrozole in the prevention of BC recurrence are well documented. While the most common side‐effects of this therapy are well‐defined, less is known about its effects on thyroid function. In women treated for early BC, an average of 1–5 kg weight gain has been observed after treatment with chemotherapy/anti‐oestrogens. We aim to evaluate the current knowledge on the side effects of tamoxifen and letrozole treatments on thyroid function, followed by its potential influence on the observed weight gain. Methods: We searched PubMed and found 16 publications on thyroid function and tamoxifen treatment in pre‐ and post‐menopausal women with early‐ and advanced BC, whereas five publications on letrozole treatment in post‐menopausal women with advanced BC. Results: According to the current literature, there is an overall tendency towards a mild and transient thyroid dysfunction, that is, subclinical hypothyroidism in tamoxifen‐treated patients. Only one publication reported further significant changes in thyroid hormones beyond one year of tamoxifen treatment. No significant changes in thyroid function have been observed among letrozole‐treated patients. Conclusion: Tamoxifen‐treated patients can develop mild and transient thyroid dysfunction within the first 12 months, yet further significant changes in thyroid function beyond one year of tamoxifen treatment have been reported in a single study. There is no evidence of thyroid dysfunction in letrozole‐treated patients. Current literature does not focus on subclinical hypothyroidism as a possible cause of weight gain in patients with BC. Subgrouping of BC patients and studies with a longer observation of thyroid hormones and weight changes during and after anti‐oestrogen treatment are needed to further elucidate how anti‐oestrogens affect thyroid function.
