Since productive performance in dairy cows is directly linked to the manner in which cows are raised, the breeding system can have a direct influence on the parameters of a farm. Unlike the main European and North American countries, in southern Brazil the use of confinement systems with access to pasture is widespread. Grazing cows are believed to be less stressed from the metabolic point of view. This study was conducted on nine commercial dairy farms located in the Serra Gaúcha, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, from September 2016 to November 2017. A total of 393 Holstein dairy cows were included immediately after birth. The dairy farms had an average of 45 lactating cows and were milked twice a day with an average milk production in 305 days of 9,500 kg / cow for the confinement system with access to pasture and 10,700 kg / cow for the confined system. The confinement system with access to pasture (CAP) was composed of five properties and was characterized by access to rotating pasture, while the confinement system without access to pasture (CNP) was composed of four properties. The study diagnosed uterine diseases, metabolic diseases and their correlations, and assessed the conception rate in the first service of the herds. Animals with access to pasture had generally lower production rates than animals reared in confinement, which suggests that the model with access to pasture used in the extreme south of the country can result in deleterious effects on animal production.

This study describes an outbreak of acute necrotic hepatopathy associated with spontaneous poisoning by Lantana camara L. in dairy cattle. A herd of 15 cows and heifers was introduced into a native pasture with limited food supply, and, sixteen days later, eight animals had spontaneous nasal hemorrhage, fever, lethargy, jaundice, and dry, dark stools with mucus and blood. The clinical course varied from two to five days. In the pasture where the cattle were kept, abundant adult specimens of L. camara L. with evident signs of consumption were observed. In total, seven cattle died and necropsy was performed in three of them. All animals had moderate jaundice, hemorrhage in the subcutaneous tissue and on the surface of different organs. The liver was slightly enlarged, with orange discoloration and enhanced lobular pattern. Histologically, multifocal areas of coagulative necrosis of hepatocytes in the centrilobular area, occasionally extending to the midzonal area, were observed, as well as marked hepatocellular degeneration and prominent cholestasis. The current study suggests that L. camara L. poisoning should be considered a differential diagnosis of acute and necrotic hepatotoxicity in cattle, despite the absence of photosensitization. RESUMO: Esse estudo descreve um surto de hepatopatia necrótica aguda associada a intoxicação espontânea por Lantana camara L. em bovinos leiteiros. Um lote de 15 vacas e novilhas foram introduzidas em um piquete com campo nativo, com escassa oferta de alimento. Após dezesseis dias, oito animais manifestaram epistaxe, febre, apatia, icterícia, fezes ressecadas e escuras com muco e sangue. A evolução do quadro clínico variou de dois a cinco dias. No piquete em que os bovinos estavam alojados havia grande quantidade de L. camara L. com sinais evidentes de consumo. No total, sete bovinos morreram, e destes, o exame post mortem foi realizado em três. Os bovinos exibiam moderada icterícia, hemorragias no tecido subcutâneo e na superfície de diferentes órgãos. O fígado estava discretamente aumentado, com coloração alaranjada e padrão lobular evidente. As lesões histológicas consistiam em acentuada necrose de coagulação de hepatócitos em região centrolobular, por vezes se estendendo a região mediozonal, além de acentuada degeneração dos hepatócitos e evidente Colestase. O presente trabalho alerta para que intoxicação por L. camara L. seja levada em consideração nos diagnósticos diferenciais de hepatotoxicidade necrótica aguda em bovinos, mesmo sem indícios de fotossensibilização.

Foot-and-mouth disease represents an important barrier to the international commerce of animal products, potentially associated with significant economic losses. The systematic vaccination of bovines and buffaloes was fundamental for the eradication of this disease; however, the use of vaccines can lead to reactions at the application site. The objectives of this study were to evaluate the effects of the vaccination protocol to the production of dairy cows and to observe the occurrence of vaccinal reactions in the animals. At one property located in the municipality of Salvador do Sul, Rio Grande do Sul, 270 dairy cows were vaccinated against foot-and-mouth disease in May 2019. The vaccine was administered via a subcutaneous application using disposable syringes and needles for each animal. Inspection of the animals was performed before and 20 days after the vaccination to verify the presence of reactions to the vaccine. The study’s sample was set by convenience, including 203 lactating animals with or without bovine somatotropin (BST) administration during the data collection period, which was limited to 20 days before and 20 days after the vaccination. Milk production data was obtained through SmartDairy® HerdMetrix™ software, tabulated in electronic spreadsheets using Microsoft Excel® and processed using the program SAS®, considering a 5% significance level for mixed model statistical analysis. RESUMO: A anaplasmose bovina é uma das principais causas de perdas produtivas e mortes no Rio Grande do Sul em rebanhos bovinos. O Anaplasma marginale é o principal agente causador da enfermidade e provoca hipertermia, anemia, prostração, abortos e perdas produtivas nos bovinos acometidos. Tendo em vista o controle deste hemoparasita em uma propriedade leiteira localizada no município de Eldorado do Sul no Rio Grande do Sul, na qual a incidência da doença era alta, 471 animais foram imunizados com Anaplasma centrale na busca de desenvolvimento cruzado para Anaplasma marginale. No experimento foi verificado que a incidência que normalmente era acima de 30% na propriedade passou para níveis inferiores a 5%. No entanto, foram verificados abortos decorrentes da imunização, principalmente nos animais que possuíam menos de 90 dias de prenhes. Já o número de mortes globais na fazenda caiu consideravelmente tendo em vista que a principal causa de morte era a anaplasmose bovina. Dos animais inoculados com A. centrale em torno de 15% apresentaram sintomatologia clínica da enfermidade e precisaram ser tratados com oxitetraciclina no período entre 15 e 30 dias após a imunização. O custo com tratamento empregado na propriedade posterior à imunização caiu em torno de 85% o que provocou impacto significativo economicamente na propriedade. ABSTRACT: Bovine anaplasmosis is a major cause of production losses and deaths in Rio Grande do Sul cattle herds. Anaplasma sp. is the main causative agent of cattle disease. It causes hyperthermia, anemia, prostration, abortions and reduces milk production in affected animals. In order to control this hemoparasite on a dairy farm located in the municipality of Eldorado do Sul in Rio Grande do Sul, where the disease incidence was high, 471 animals were immunized with Anaplasma centrale in the search for cross-protectiv immunity for Anaplasma marginale. The property anaplasmosis incidence, which usually was above 30%, became 5% after the immunization. However, abortions were observed resulting from innoculaition, especially in animals that had less than 90 days of pregnancy. The global number of deaths on the farm dropped considerably given that the main cause of death was the bovine anaplasmosis. 15% of animals inoculated with A. centrale showed clinical symptoms of the disease between 15 and 30 days after immunization and had to be treated with oxytetracycline. The amount of money spent with anaplasmosis treatment decay 85% after the immunization, which caused significant economic impact on the property.

Long transportation times remain a challenge to the satisfactory diagnosis of Campylobacter fetus subsp. venerealis (Cfv). Here we demonstrated that samples of frozen bovine preputial mucus maintained at −20 °C for 10 days can be used as an alternative source for molecular diagnosis of Cfv. This approach will improve the analysis of this bacterium.

EnglishThe objective of this paper is to report the epidemiological, clinical, and pathological aspects of a case of rumenitis due to the ingestion of soybean oil in a bovine. The ox had access to barrels that stored soybean oil and ingested an indeterminate amount of the product. After consuming it, the animal presented hiporexia; liquid, brownish, and greasy feces; severe dehydration (12%); apathy; sternal recumbency; and death with a clinical evolution of 4 days. At necropsy, the rumen was filled with voluminous food and moderate amount of white-gray liquid with a greasy appearance. Upon microscopic examination, hydropic degeneration of the epithelium and areas of mucosal necrosis were observed in the rumen and reticulum. From these findings, we concluded that the bovine developed a state of acidosis and acute rumenitis due to excessive intake of lipids. O animal teve acesso acidental a toneis que armazenavam oleo de soja e ingeriu uma quantidade indeterminada do produto. Apos o consumo, o bovino apresentou hiporexia, fezes liquidas, acastanhadas e de aspecto gorduroso, desidratacao severa (12%), apatia, decubito esternal e morte, com evolucao clinica de quatro dias. Na necropsia o rumen estava repleto por alimentos volumosos e moderada quantidade de liquido branco-acinzentado e de aspecto gorduroso. Microscopicamente, no rumen e reticulo havia degeneracao hidropica do epitelio e areas de necrose da mucosa. A partir destes achados, concluimos que o bovino desenvolveu um quadro de acidose e ruminite aguda por consumo excessivo de lipideos. RESUMO: A infestação de pastagens por Pteridium arachnoideum é um problema que afeta a pecuária em diversas partes do mundo, ocasionando perdas produtivas e mortalidades nos rebanhos, bem como a redução das áreas de pastagens. Devido aos prejuízos na bovinocultura, foi proposto o acompanhamento de uma propriedade no Rio Grande do Sul com perdas por Pteridium arachnoideum. Realizou-se um levantamento das mortes associadas à intoxicação por samambaia na propriedade durante o período de janeiro de 2007 a janeiro de 2015. Adicionalmente, testou-se a viabilidade de ovinos como ferramenta de controle biológico de samambaia e se acompanhou as tentativas de controle da planta através do uso dos herbicidas metilsulfuron-metil e picloram, os quais eram associados ou não à roçada prévia. Das mortes por intoxicação natural acompanhadas na propriedade, observou-se 22 casos de quadro agudo de diátese hemorrágica e seis de quadro crônico de carcinomas do trato digestório superior. Em cinco bovinos jovens com diátese hemorrágica, além de hemorragias disseminadas e infartos, observou-se acentuado edema laríngeo, que cursava, clinicamente, com dispneia e estertores respiratórios característicos. Os carcinomas do trato digestório superior, apesar de menos frequentes, causaram perdas expressivas, devido à mortalidade anual de reprodutoras. Notou-se que a introdução de bovinos jovens em áreas recentemente roçadas pode resultar no consumo de grandes quantidades de samambaia e na ocorrência de surtos da enfermidade aguda. O controle das populações de samambaia pelo pastejo por ovinos não foi eficiente, devido ao baixo consumo observado com a lotação de quatro ovinos por hectare, embora mortalidade de ovinos por consumo da planta não tenha sido registrada. Após a retirada do potreiro infestado por samambaia, ao final do experimento, oito dos ovinos foram acompanhados, clinicamente, por três anos e não apresentaram nenhuma alteração. A utilização dos herbicidas resultou em uma redução da cobertura de P. arachnoideum. No entanto, essa prática necessita de estudos adicionais, já que algumas áreas não tiveram recuperação satisfatória da pastagem e o seu uso pode causar impactos ambientais e aquisição de resistência de P. arachnoideum aos herbicidas. ABSTRACT: The infestation of pastures by populations of Pteridium arachnoideum has been a considerable and global problem to the livestock production, due to animal mortality and pasture coverage reduction. Given the impact of P. arachnoideum on cattle production, it has been proposed to monitor a beef cattle farm in Rio Grande do Sul, to assess some of the losses associated with the plant consumption and the methods employed for the plant control. A survey of cattle deaths associated with fern poisoning on the farm was carried out from January 2007 to January 2015. In addition, the viability of sheep as a biological control tool was tested. Attempts to control the plant through the use of the herbicides methylsulfuron-methyl and picloram associated or not with previous mowing were monitored. Cases of natural poisoning observed in the farm included the acute form (22), known as hemorrhagic diathesis as well as the chronic form, consisting in digestive carcinomas (6). Five cases of hemorrhagic diathesis in young cattle went along with marked laryngeal edema, which was clinically manifested as dyspnea and roaring, in addition to the classic pathological changes of widespread hemorrhages and infarcts. Even though less frequent, upper digestive tract carcinomas caused significant losses, due to annual mortality of mature cows. In occasions, when cattle were moved to newly mowed infested areas, outbreaks of acute poisoning were observed. The attempted control by sheep introduction showed to be unpractical, due to the little consumption seen at a stocking rate of four sheep per hectare. However, sheep mortality due to P. arachnoideum consumption was not recorded. The plant control method applied at the farm is based on both, the mowing of densely populated areas and the use of herbicides, namely metylsulfuron-methyl and picloram, in all paddocks. The reduction of P. arachnoideum coverage showed to be varied in different paddocks, however allowed the recovery of some grazing areas. This practice needs further studies, as some areas have not had satisfactory pasture recovery, and its indiscriminate use could lead to environmental impacts and resistance of P. arachnoideum to herbicides.

Beef heifers that conceive early during their first breeding season calve earlier, wean heavier calves, and tend to continue doing so throughout the rest of their reproductive lives. Otherwise, under extensively managed systems in Southern Brazil, only a variable proportion of 2-year-old beef heifers reach puberty before the start of the breeding season. The aim of this study was to evaluate a protocol to induce puberty in peripubertal beef heifers using injectable progesterone (P4) and oestradiol cypionate (EC) to improve pregnancy per AI (P/AI) in fixed-time AI (FTAI) programs. A total of 311 Angus heifers, 24 ± 3 months of age, 3.1 ± 0.3 body condition score (1 = emaciated; 5 = obese), and 328 ± 41 kg of body weight (BW), were examined before FTAI protocol (Day −24) by transrectal ultrasonography to determine reproductive tract score (RTS; 1 = prepubertal; 5 = pubertal). Prepubertal heifers (RTS 1; 12.8%, 40/311) were excluded from the study. Heifers with RTS = 2 (n = 271) were assigned to 2 groups: P4 (RTS 2 or 3, n = 100) and cyclic (RTS 4 and 5, n = 171). Peripubertal heifers were treated on Day −24 with 150 mg of injectable P4 IM (Sincrogest® injectable, Ourofino Animal Health, Cravinhos, Brazil) and on Day −12 received 1 mg of EC IM (Sincro CP®, Ourofino Animal Health). Cyclic heifers received no hormonal treatment before FTAI protocol. On Day 0, heifers in the P4 group were evaluated again to determine RTS, body condition score, and BW. Induction of puberty was defined by the presence of a follicle >8.5 mm (RTS = 4) or a corpus luteum (RTS = 5). All heifers received an FTAI protocol consisting of 2 mg of oestradiol benzoate IM (Sincrodiol®, Ourofino Animal Health) and an intravaginal progesterone implant (1 g; Sincrogest®, Ourofino Animal Health). On Day 8, heifers had implants removed and were injected with 1 mg of EC and 500 µg of sodium cloprostenol IM (Sincrocio®, Ourofino Animal Health). After 48 h, all heifers received an FTAI. Thirty days after AI, the diagnosis of gestation was performed by ultrasonography. Statistics included chi-square and linear regression with coefficients analysed as independent variables, considering a significant P-value of 0.05. On Day 0, percentages of RTS 5, 4, and 3 in the P4 heifers were 37, 27, and 36%, respectively, resulting in 64% of puberty induction. Presynchronization treatments associated with the Ovsynch protocol and its modifications have been used to improve reproductive performance in lactating dairy cows. Use of a PG-3-G protocol is indicated to increase the number of cows in the most ideal stage of the oestrous cycle (Days 5-9) at first gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) injection of the Ovsynch protocol. The objective of this study was to compare fertility of lactating dairy cows submitted to Ovsynch-P, preceded by PG-3-G protocol or not. A total of 86 Holstein cows [body condition score of 2.6 ± 0.2 (1-to-5 scale), 3 and 10 years old, mean milk yield of 28.1 ± 7.9 kg per day, and 118 ± 56 days postpartum period] maintained in a semi-intensive system were blocked by parity and date of calving and randomly assigned to groups: control (n = 44) and PG-3-G (n = 42). On Day -10 cows in the PG-3-G group received an injection of 500 µg of sodium cloprostenol IM (Estron, Agener Uniao, Brazil), and on Day -7 they received 0.05 mg of Lecirelin IM (GnRH, Gestran, Agener Uniao). On Day 0, all cows had the first dose of Ovsynch GnRH injection and a 1-g progesterone intravaginal implant (P4, Primer, Agener Uniao). On Day 7, a dose of sodium cloprostenol was administered to induce corpus luteum (CL) luteolysis, and the P4 implant was removed. Forty-eight hours later, cows were injected with the second dose of GnRH and inseminated 12 to 18 h later. The presence of CL and ovulatory follicle (OF) diameter were determined by transrectal ultrasonography (Aquila, Pie Medical, Maastricht, the Netherlands) on Days 0, 7, and 9, and gestation diagnosis was done on Day 30 after AI. Statistical analysis was performed using ANOVA, chi-square, Mann-Whitney, and Pearson correlation tests in SPSS 18 (Armonk, NY, USA), considering P = 0.05 significant and a tendency when P > 0.05 but P = 0.10. Incidence of CL on Day 0 tended to be more frequent (P = 0.1) in the PG-3-G group (78.6%) compared with the control (59%), but CL presence on Day 7 did not differ (P = 0.98) between the groups (35 and 34%, respectively). Lameness can negatively affect production, but there is still controversy about the perception of pain in dairy cows. This study aimed to verify the effects of hoof affections in dairy cows on locomotion score, physiological attributes, pressure nociceptive threshold, and thermographic variables, as well as assess improvement on these variables after corrective trimming and treatment. Thirty-four lame lactating cows were gait-scored, and all cows with locomotion score ≥4 were retained for this study 1 day before trimming. Lame cows were diagnosed, pressure nociceptive threshold at sound, and affected hooves were measured, thermographic images were recorded, and physiological attributes were evaluated. Hooves with lesions were trimmed and treated and cows were re-evaluated 1 week after such procedures. The experimental design was a completely randomized design. Each cow was considered an experimental unit and traits were analyzed using paired t test, linear correlation, and linear regression. Digital and interdigital dermatitis were classified as infectious diseases while laminitis sequels, sole ulcers, and white line were classified as non-infectious diseases. After 1 week, the locomotion score was reduced on average in 1.5 points. Trimming increased the pressure nociceptive threshold for cows with non-infectious affections while tended to increase the pressure nociceptive threshold for cows with infectious affections. Physiological attributes and thermographic values did not change with trimming. Trimming and treatment have benefic effects on animal welfare as gait is improved and sensitivity to pain is reduced.

Alternative diagnostic tools and interesting epidemiological assumptions were associated with an outbreak of Johne's disease. In a buffalo herd infected with paratuberculosis, seven clinically affected animals and 21 animals with anti-Mycobacterium avium ELISA reactions were identified. Total herd included 203 buffaloes. Most lesions were comparable to those described in buffaloes and cattle affected by Johne's disease. Water buffalo behaviors such as communal nursing and allosuckling may be additional risk factors for this disease. Detection of positive Ziehl-Neelsen staining and anti-M. avium immunolabeling in rectal biopsies from one buffalo with paratuberculosis are highlighted as auxiliary diagnostic tools for Johne's disease in live animals.

Background: The pregnancy rate in fixed-time insemination (FTAI) programs in beef cattle is affected by several factors, including the size of ovulatory follicle (OF). Induced ovulation of small OF (≤11 mm) reduces the chance of pregnancy after FTAI when compared to ovulation of larger follicles (≥12 mm). Hormonal treatments to enhance the follicle growth have been widely used in comercial beef cattle systems, aiming to improve the development of a dominant follicle. The objective of this experiment was to evaluate the effect of treatment with eCG or FSH at the time of progesterone implant removal on the diameter of OF, final follicle growth and pregnancy rate in beef cows.Materials, Methods & Results: Three hundred and seven suckled beef cows with body condition score 2.80 ± 0.24 (1 to 5 scale) and 45 to 70 days postpartum were synchronized to FTAI. On day 0, intravaginal implants containing 1 g of progesterone, were inserted and administered 2 mg of estradiol benzoate (EB), i.m. On day 7, intravaginal implants were removed and 150 µg of D-cloprostenol were administered i.m. At this time, three groups were assigned according to the treatments: eCG (400 UI eCG, i.m.), FSH (25 UI FSH, i.m.) and Control (1 mL Saline, i.m.). On day 8, all cows were injected with 1mg EB i.m. and were inseminated 52 to 56 h after the implant removal. Transrectal ultrasonography exams of ovaries were performed at the time of implant removal and before FTAI to determine the diameter of the largest follicle and the follicular daily growth. Pregnancy exams were conducted by transretal ultrasonography 30 days after FTAI. Statistical analyzes were performed by Chi-square test for pregnancy rate. Ovarian diameters and follicular daily growth were analyzed by ANOVA with means compared by Tukey test considering significant P value < 0.05. The diameter of the largest follicle measured on day 7 (10.07, 9.64 and 10.36 mm) and on day 9 (12.73, 11.53 and 12.57 mm), to eCG, FSH and Control respectively, did not differ within treatments (P > 0.05). Final follicular growth was greater (P < 0.05) on eCG group (1.33 mm/day) compared to Control (1.1 mm/day) and FSH (0.94 mm/day). The pregnancy rates of FTAI were 56.6% (60/106), 52% (51/98) and 50.4% (52/103) to eCG, FSH and Control, respectively, with no statistic difference (P > 0.05).Discussion: Suckled beef cows managed under grazing systems frequently have reduced follicular development and longer postpartum anestrous. In this situation, protocols to FTAI combining progesterone, estradiol and eCG or FSH at the time of progesterone device removal are encouraged to improve final follicular growth, ovulation and to increase conception rate. The hypotesis of similar follicular growth and pregnancy rate in suckled beef cows treated with eCG or FSH was not confirmed in the field trial. eCG treated cows had greater follicular growth, follicular diameter at day 9 and higher pregnancy rate compared to FSH and Control cows. FSH produced similar follicular growth rates to Controls and both were significantly smaller than observed in cows receiving eCG. Also FSH supplementation failed to enhance pregnancy rate compared to Control cows. The longer half-life of eCG and its greater LH-like effects could explain the difference in final follicular stimulation when compared to FSH in FTAI protocols. Thus, administration of a single dose of FSH at progesterone device removal failed to be an alternative to eCG in FTAI synchronization programs.

Background: Lead poisoning is one of the major toxic diseases of cattle. Contamination occurs with ingestion of products containing lead, especially batteries, or through contaminated pastures and water sources. Clinical signs are neurological and necropsy findings and histopathological changes may vary depending on the clinical presentation. Although the diseaseis widely reported in the literature, there are rare descriptions of intoxication in cattle raised in military training areas. This work describes the epidemiological, clinical and anatomopathological features of an outbreak of lead poisoning in cattle kept in a military artillery training camp.Case: Fifteen cattle out of a herd of sixty 4-6 year-old, mixed breed castrated males were affected. The cattle were held in a 100 ha of native pasture used for military artillery training. After three weeks in this area, the affected cattle had predominantly neurological clinical manifestations, characterized by somnolence, ambulatory incoordination, muscle tremors,bruxism, aimless walking, blindness and decubitus. The clinical course was 24-72 h. Eight of the 15 affected cattle died and two were necropsied. Necropsy finds were non-specific and the histological lesions of both necropsied cattle were restricted to the brain and kidneys. Laminar neuronal necrosis, neuropil vacuolization (spongiosis) and vascular endothelial hypertrophy were observed in the telencephalic cortex. Additionally there was astrocytic degeneration and neuronophagia.There was degeneration and necrosis of renal tubular epithelium and in one bovine there were intranuclear inclusion bodies in the renal epithelial cells; these inclusion bodies were highlighted using both modified Ziehl-Neelsen and periodic acid Schiff (PAS) stains. The levels of lead found in the kidneys and livers of the two necropsied cattle were respectively51.7 μg/g and 41.00 μg/g for one of the necropsied cattle; and 431μg/g and 39.0 μg/g for the other. After the diagnosis of intoxication, cattle were removed from the area and the remaining seven affected bovines recovered.Discussion: The diagnosis of lead poisoning in cattle in the current study was based on epidemiological, clinical, anatomopathological data and in the determination of lead levels in the kidney and liver. The association of these data provides an invaluable aid in confirming a presumptive diagnosis of lead poisoning. Pasturing on military artillery training fieldsis a rarely described form source of lead for the intoxication in bovine species. In such cases, cattle may ingest the lead directly from the soil or through contaminated pastures containing lead dust on the surface of the leaves. Histologically, laminar neuronal necrosis in the telencephalic cortex, associated with tubular necrosis and intranuclear inclusion bodies intubular epithelial cells, are characteristic features of the intoxication. These changes are usually associated with ischemic anoxia in the nervous system and alteration in nuclear function which interferes in gene expression in the kidney. Lead poisoning in cattle should be differentiated from other neurological conditions, especially rabies, hepatic encephalopathyand several causes of polioencephalomalacia. Rinite micotica e uma doenca granulomatosa de ocorrencia pouco frequente que acomete o homem e os animais. Recentemente, no Centro-Oeste e Nordeste do Brasil foram descritos casos de rinite micotica em ovinos. Em uma propriedade no municipio de Parobe, Rio Grande do Sul, Sul do Brasil adoeceram e morreram, desde janeiro de 2007, 4 ovinos de um total de 30 animais. Os animais apresentavam dificuldade respiratoria, intolerância ao exercicio e secrecao serossanguinolenta pelas narinas e morte apos alguns dias. Um quinto animal doente foi encaminhado ao Setor de Patologia Veterinaria da UFRGS para exame clinico e necropsia. O ovino apresentava dificuldade respiratoria devido a obstrucao parcial dos orificios nasais, intolerância ao exercicio, espirros e corrimento nasal serossanguinolento bilateral. Os principais achados de necropsia foram massas de coloracao amarelada irregular, friavel e com coagulos de sangue na regiao etmoidal, conchas nasais e coanas do lado esquerdo. Foram encontrados ainda, pequenos nodulos no lobulo pulmonar diafragmatico esquerdo. Na microscopia da mucosa da cavidade nasal apresentava necrose multifocal, contendo estruturas semelhantes a hifas e circundadas por infiltrado de neutrofilo, macrofagos e celulas gigantes. Cerebro com focos necroticos piogranulomatosos na leptomeninge das porcoes frontais. Na coloracao de Gomori metenamina-prata, foram observadas hifas, irregulares e raramente septadas e na imunohistoquimica para Pythium insidiosum, obteve-se resultado negativo. A morfologia das hifas fungicas no tecido e caracteristica de Conidiobolomicose.

Descrevem-se cinco casos de pitiose cutânea em equinos enviados ao Laboratório de Patologia Veterinária da Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul, Brasil. Microscopicamente focos necróticos circundados por infiltrados de eosinófilos, neutrófilos, macrófagos e abundante tecido conjuntivo fibroso foi observado. Filamentos de hifas esparsamente septadas foram identificadas no centro das áreas necróticas. Na coloração de prata metenamina de Grocott hifas septadas, ramificadas foram também observadas no interior dos focos de necrose. O diagnóstico de pitiose foi confirmado em todos os casos através do teste de imuno-histoquímica em cortes de tecido usando um anticorpo policlonal anti-Pythium insidiosum. Imuno-histoquímica em tecidos fixados em formalina podem ser úteis no diagnóstico de pitiose quando o material submetido não pode ser mais utilizado para cultivo. This report describes five cases of equine cutaneos pythiosis submitted to the Veterinary Pathology Laboratory – Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. Microscopically necrotic foci surrounded by eosinophils, neutrophils, macrophages infiltrated and marked fibrosis were observed. Septated scattered hyphal filaments were also identified in the center of necrotic areas. In Gomori methenamine silver-stained sections septate hyphae were also observed within areas of necrosis. A diagnosis of Pythium insidiosum infection was confirmed in all cases by immunoperoxidase staining of tissue sections using a P. insidiosum polyclonal antibody. Immunohistochemical on formalin fixed material can be useful for diagnosis when materials submitted to culture are not more available.

The most common clinical presentation of the disease is the cutaneous form, which is characterized by granulomatous ulcerative lesions and yellow to tan necrotic masses, also termed ‘kunkers’ (Santurio et al., 2006). Nevertheless, isolated cases of enteric pythiosis have sporadically been described in horses (Brown and Roberts, 1988; Morton et al., 1991; Purcell et al., 1994), cats (Barker et al., 1993), and most commonly in dogs (Dykstra et al., 1999). The pathogenesis of intestinal pythiosis is not completely understood. It has been suggested that previous injury caused by vegetal material or pathogenic agents on the intestinal mucosa may be important predisposing factors (Morton et al., 1991; Purcell et al., 1994). Alternatively, the disease could also occur by active penetration of the agent (Brown and Roberts, 1988). This case report describes the pathologic and immunohistochemical findings observed in a case of equine intestinal pythiosis. Scrapie é uma encefalopatia espongiforme transmissível (EET) que causa lesões cerebrais degenerativas em ovinos e caprinos. Caracteriza-se pelo acúmulo, no tecido encefálico e linforreticular, da forma anormal da proteína priônica (PrP Sc) que provoca a morte maciça de neurônios e células gliais, além de vacuolização intensa no tecido afetado. Esse trabalho descreve a utilização da técnica de imuno-histoquímica (IHQ) para proteína priônica em tecido linforreticular de biópsias de terceira pálpebra e mucosa retal, como método diagnóstico de scrapie em ovinos. Realizaram-se exames de IHQ para scrapie em amostras de uma propriedade de origem de um ovino com diagnóstico dessa enfermidade. Utilizaram-se anticorpos monoclonais antipríon para diagnóstico ante mortem pela técnica de IHQ. Nas 318 amostras de biópsias analisadas, encontrou-se 19 resultados positivos para PrP Sc nos folículos de terceira pálpebra e não foi obtida marcação no tecido linfático de mucosa retal em nenhuma das amostras coletadas. Realizaram-se 18 necropsias dos animais positivos anteriormente por biópsia e 21 necropsias de ovinos parentes dos positivos de scrapie. Confirmou-se o resultado de scrapie pela IHQ após a necropsia dos animais positivos nas biópsias de terceira pálpebra. Nesses animais, os órgãos com maior número de cortes positivos foram a terceira pálpebra (18/18) e a tonsila (8/18). Nos ovinos com parentesco com os positivos, nenhum resultado de scrapie ocorreu. A utilização de tecidos linfoides no diagnóstico de scrapie por IHQ através de biópsias mostrou-se um método viável e eficaz para o diagnóstico pré-clínico. Scrapie, a form of transmissible spongiform encephalopathy (TSEs) is a fatal neurodegenerative disorder that affects sheep and goats. The disease is characterized by an accumulation of the abnormal prionic protein (PrP Sc) in the encephalic and lymphoreticular tissues. This paper describes the use of anti-prionic protein immunohistochemical (IHC) procedure as a method of pre-clinical diagnosis of scrapie.The test was carried out in biopsied lymphoreticular tissues from third eyelid and rectal mucosa. Anti-prion protein monoclonal antibodies F89/160.1.5 and F99/97.6.1 were used. Scrapie diagnosis in lymphoreticular tissues through IHC was achieved when the samples had a minimum of three lymphoid follicles in well delimited germinal centre. Positive immunostaining was identified in 19 out of 318 samples of the third eyelid. Material sampled at post-mortem examination in 18 of these scrapie-positive sheep, which were previously verified by biopsy, and in 21 of its relatives, was confirmed with IHC tests. Positive immunostaining from rectal mucosa tissue was not observed. Third eyelid and tonsil were the organs with the larger amount of positive immunostaining (18/18 and 8/18 respectively) at post-mortem examination. None positive result was obtained along the 21 animals related to the positive ones, and none of the positive cases showed IHC labeling in the brain. The use of lymphoid tissues for scrapie diagnosis by IHC through biopsies showed to be a viable and efficient method for pre-clinical diagnostic.

Since poisoning by Senecio spp. is one of the main causes of cattle death in southern Brazil, control of these plants is a priority for the local livestock production. After the pasture has been mowed, grazing by 16 sheep was efficient for controlling Senecio brasiliensis and Senecio madagascariensis populations in a 5.5-hectare area that had long been severely infested with these species. A total of 28,629 plants among S. brasiliensis (flower-of-souls, 10,122) and S.madagascariensis (fireweed, 18,507) were almost completely eliminated in a two-year period. The number of sheep was kept at 3.0 stock units/ha, but a variable number of cattle were temporarily stocked according to pasture availability. The major sanitary practice applied to the sheep was anthelmintic administration. Liver biopsies taken from sheep and cattle before and after experimental period didn't reveal any change associable with seneciosis. The performance levels of the sheep were comparable to those observed in flocks managed under traditional extensive grazing systems in southern Brazil. As intoxicações por Senecio spp. estão entre as principais causas de morte de bovinos no sul do Brasil; portanto, o controle dessas plantas é prioridade para a pecuária local. Depois de uma roçada, o pastejo por 16 ovinos controlou, eficientemente, populações de Senecio brasiliensis e Senecio madagascariensis em uma área de 5,5 hectares, a qual havia se mantido, por oito anos consecutivos, severamente, infestada por essas espécies. Um total de 28.629 plantas, entre S. brasiliensis (10.122) e S.madagascariensis (18.507) foi, virtualmente, eliminado em um período de dois anos. O número de ovelhas foi mantido em três unidades /hectare, mas variáveis lotações de bovinos foram associadas com a disponibilidade de forragem. As principais práticas de manejo sanitário aplicadas aos ovinos foram administrações de anti-helmínticos. Biópsias hepáticas, colhidas antes e após o período de estudo, não revelaram qualquer alteração associável com seneciose. Os níveis de desempenho dos ovinos foram comparáveis aos observados em rebanhos manejados em sistemas extensivos tradicionais no sul do Brasil.

Descreve-se um surto de intoxicação por monensina em avestruzes e equinos em uma propriedade no Rio Grande do Sul. Oito dias antes do aparecimento dos primeiros sinais clínicos, uma ração comercial formulada para bovinos, cuja composição incluía monensina (177ppm), foi introduzida na dieta dos animais. Três equinos manifestaram di iculdade de movimentação, cólica, sudorese e decúbito permanente; dois morreram em 48 horas após o inicio dos sinais. Três avestruzes adoeceram, dois apresentaram decúbito esternal permanente, o outro estava apático e relutante ao movimento. Dois avestruzes morreram 15 e 30 dias após o início dos sinais. Nas necropsias dos equinos, observou-se miocárdio com palidez multifocal, hemorragia no endocárdio e no epicárdio (principalmente ao redor dos vasos coronarianos) e musculatura esquelética com áreas branco-amareladas bilaterais e focalmente extensas. Essas alterações corresponderam histologicamente, à miopatia e cardiomiopatia necróticas. Nos avestruzes, músculos esqueléticos difusamente pálidos e com múltiplos pequenos pontos brancos corresponderam à necrose segmentar polifásica, com alterações necróticas e regenerativas. An outbreak of monensin poisoning affected ostriches and horses from a farm in Rio Grande do Sul. Eight days before the onset of clinical signs, a commercial cattle concentrate containing monensin (177ppm) was introduced in the diet of the animals. Three horses showed dif iculty moving, cramping, sweating and permanent recumbency, and death within 48 hours. Three ostriches showed sternal permanent recumbency or sluggish and reluctance to move. Two ostriches died 15 and 30 days after the onset of signs. Gross changes in the horses included multifocal myocardial pallor, endocardial and epicardial hemorrhages mainly around the coronary vessels, and bilateral yellowish white foci in skeletal muscles. Histological lesions were necrotic myopathy and cardiomyopathy. At necropsy of ostriches, skeletal muscles were diffusely pale with multiple small white spots, which corresponded to polyphasic segmental necrosis and regenerative changes.

Nas últimas décadas, os cuidados sanitários de vacas leiteiras passaram por um processo de adaptação, no qual o enfoque individual foi substituído pelo coletivo, cujo sistema de manutenção e interpretação de registros por veterinários assumiu papel fundamental. Os registros de eficiência produtiva e reprodutiva, bem como os de ordem sanitária observados em um rebanho bovino leiteiro no Sul do Brasil foram apresentados e discutidos. O período estudado foi 2000-2009. Os dados de produção leiteira média incluíram, por período de lactação de 349 dias, 8436 kg de leite, 290 kg de gordura e 275 kg de proteína, com média de contagem de células somáticas de 201000 células/ml de leite. Idade ao primeiro parto (31 meses), serviços por concepção (2,1), intervalo entre partos (428 dias), intervalo parto-concepção (146 dias), taxas médias anuais de parição (76,2%), perdas fetais (9,8-19%) e natimortos (3,6%), além de período de espera voluntária (94 dias) foram alguns dos índices de desempenho reprodutivo registrados. Informações sanitárias do rebanho incluíram prevalência média de doenças comuns em bovinos leiteiros tais como anaplasmose (29,8%), mastites (27,8%), doenças digitais (26,3%), cistos ovarianos (21,3%), retenção de placenta (19,7%), infecções uterinas (10,6%), diarreia (23,7%) e pneumonia (16,8%) em terneiras, entre outras. Além disso, razões de descartes (baixo desempenho reprodutivo [56,3%], alterações de úbere [33,6%], etc.), causas de morte (anaplasmose [16,4%], leucose [11.4], etc.) e o impacto de doenças de bovinos como tuberculose, leucose e neosporose sobre o rebanho foram também apresentados e sucintamente discutidos. Números entre colchetes representam taxas acumuladas no período 2000-2009. Over the last decades, the emphasis on the health of dairy cows has changed from an individual to a herd level. In this scenario, the role played by the recording system and its interpretation by veterinarians has gained primordial importance. The records of productive and reproductive performance and of sanitary status from a southern Brazilian dairy cattle herd have been presented and discussed. The period of study was 2000-2009. Mean values per lactation period were 349D 8436M 290F 275P 201SCS (D: days in lactation, M: kg of milk yield, F: kg of fat, P: kg of protein and SCS: somatic cell score in 1000 cells/ml of milk). Major indexes of reproductive efficiency included age at first calving (31 months), services per conception (2.1), intercalving interval (428 days), calving to conception interval (146 days), mean annual rates of parturitions (76.2%), fetal losses (9.8-19.0%), and stillbirths (3.6%), apart of voluntary waiting period (94 days). Main information on sanitary status of the herd was associated with the mean prevalence of common disorders of dairy cattle such as anaplasmosis (29.8%), mastitis (27.8%), digital diseases (26.3%), ovarian cysts (21.3%), placental retention (19.7%), postpartum uterine infections (10.6%), and calf diarrhea (23.7%) and pneumonia (16.8%), among others. In addition, culling reasons (low reproductive performance [56.3%] and udder/mastitis problems [33.6%]), causes of cattle deaths (anaplasmosis [16.4%] and leukosis [11.4]), and the impact of cattle diseases such as tuberculosis, leukosis, and neosporosis on the herd have also been presented and succinctly discussed. Em um rebanho bovino leiteiro no Rio Grande do Sul, sete de 554 bovinos foram afetados e morreram devido à intoxicação por Senecio madagascariensis. Aspectos clínicos, patológicos e epidemiológicos observados nos bovinos afetados foram indistinguíveis daqueles usualmente observados em casos de intoxicações por outras espécies de Senecio. A planta invadiu extensas áreas em potreiros mantidos constantemente com altas lotações de bovinos. Senecio madagascariensis esteve se estabelecendo nesta propriedade pelos últimos três anos, sem que qualquer medida de controle fosse adotada pela equipe técnica do estabelecimento, que desconhecia o potencial tóxico dessa espécie de Senecio. In a dairy cattle herd in southern Brazil, 7 out of 554 cattle were affected and died due to Senecio madagascariensis poisoning. Clinical, pathological, and epidemiological findings in the affected cattle were indistinguishable from those usually seen in poisoning caused by other Senecio species. The plant invaded extensive areas in heavily stocked paddocks. Senecio madagascariensis had been spreading in this farm for the last three years, with no control strategy, because neither the farmers nor the local veterinarian knew about the potential risks of this Sernecio species.

O pastejo de plantas leguminosas que provocam fermentação excessiva pode causar surtos de timpanismo e mortes em ruminantes. Em uma propriedade no município de São Francisco de Paula, Rio Grande do Sul, oito bovinos de um total de 66 morreram subitamente, ao haverem sido transferidos de um potreiro de campo nativo, para outro cuja pastagem era composta por Trifolium repens e Trifolium pratense. Os animais foram encontrados mortos no amanhecer do dia seguinte à transferência, não foram observados sinais clínicos prévios. Os principais achados macroscópicos incluíram aumento de volume abdominal, protrusão de vagina e língua, distensão ruminal, fígado de coloração pálida e aumento do baço. Na histologia, havia congestão e edema pulmonares e hiperplasia linfóide difusa e acentuada no baço. A evidência de ingestão das leguminosas associada aos achados patológicos e à ausência de microrganismos no exame bacteriológico confirmaram o diagnóstico de timpanismo. Leguminous bloat may occur in cattle which graze pastures consisting of lush forages. In a dairy farm located on the municipality of São Francisco de Paula, Rio Grande do Sul, eight out of 66 cows died suddenly after being transferred to a paddock whose pastures were composed of Trifolium repens and Trifolium pratense. Animals were found dead in the morning of the next day after being transferred; no clinical signs were noticed. Main gross findings included enhanced abdominal volume, protrusion and congestion of the tongue and vagina, ruminal distension, pale liver, and enhanced spleen. Histologically, there were lung congestion and edema, and splenic lymphoid hyperplasia. The evidence of leguminous forages consumption associated with the pathological findings and the absence of growth on bacteriology confirmed the diagnosis.
