A new species of marine amphipod of the genus Quadrimaera is described from material collected from Crandon Park, Key Biscayne, Miami, Florida, USA, associated to Penicillus spp. about 0.5 m water depth. The differences with the closer species are also presented.

Magnaphoxus ajaja gen. et sp. nov., Ma. simplex gen. et sp. nov. and Ma. longicarpus gen. et sp. nov. are described. The material examined was collected off the states of Ceará, Rio Grande do Norte and Bahia during the projects “Avaliação da Biota Bentônica e Planctônica na porção offshore das Bacias Potiguar e Ceará (BPOT)” and “Programa de Avaliação do Potencial Sustentável de Recursos Vivos na Zona Econômica Exclusiva (REVIZEE)”. Additionally, material from other surveys off Brazilian northeastern coast is included. The samples were collected by rectangular dredges, box corer and Van Veen grabs, ranging from shallow waters to 168 meters in depth. The new genus is morphologically similar to the genera Grandifoxus Barnard, 1979, Metharpinia Schellenberg, 1931, Microphoxus Barnard, 1960 and Rhepoxynius Barnard, 1979. However, it can be recognized by the exclusive constricted and very broad rostrum and bilobated coxa 6, plus the combination of characters such as: lower lip outer plate with apical cusps; right mandible without lacinia mobilis; pereopods 3–4 carpus posterior margin with one distal robust long seta; propodus strongly armed with robust setae; uropods 1–2 peduncle dorsolateral margin combed distally; telson with two apical robust setae on each side. All three new species, are fully described, illustrated, and discussed.

The inner and outer surfaces of eight tubes of Ceriantharia from the northern coast of the state of São Paulo, Brazil, were analyzed. We observed 14 taxa of crustaceans, including one novel species, Podocerus carmelina sp. nov. We also report two new location records for previously known species and provide an identification key for Podocerus species with type localities in the Atlantic Ocean. The new species can be easily differentiated from its congeners by the following features: pereonite 3 with weak dorsal carina; gnathopod 2 carpus indistinct, almost entirely fused to propodus, propodus bearing several facial short plumose setae, palm defined by a proximal blunt projection, with a subtriangular tooth medially, a ‘u-shaped’ concavity and a crenulated lobe distally; pereonite 4 elongated, about 2.2 × deeper than wide; pereonites 5–6 anteroventral corner with a subacute projection; coxa 5 anteroventral corner with a notch, forming an acute spine; telson dorsal lobe with three stout setae, with naked lateral margins; uropod 2 outer ramus with one subapical long and stout plumose seta. Microplastics (MPs) are ubiquitous in marine environment, and a growing body of evidence suggests that they pose a threat to marine ecosystems. The ingestion of MPs causes a false sense of satiation and decline in nutritional status. After animal ingestion, MPs fragment into nanoplastics, returning to the environment through egestion and thereby becoming vectors of contaminant exposure (organic and inorganic) into marine food webs. Crustacea is one invertebrate group frequently investigated in studies of MP ingestion. Through a critical review of the current literature, we provide an overview of techniques utilized in research on the contamination of MPs on members of the Crustacea subphylum and thereby identify methodological limitations and future research needs.

Ecologically important marine ecosystems should be identified and protected, as is the case of the poorly known SW Atlantic rhodolith beds. Understanding the main variables predicting biodiversity patterns is essential for determining priority areas for conservation. Here, we analyzed the macroinvertebrate associated with rhodoliths from euphotic and mesophotic zones from the Fernando de Noronha Archipelago investigating the drivers of diversity distribution in this habitat. Rhodoliths were sampled and vagile macroinvertebrates (>500 μm) were classified and quantified. We verified that estimated density of organisms associated with rhodoliths in the euphotic zone was 17 % greater than the mesophotic zone. The communities along depth zones show dissimilarities, suggesting that both environments are ecologically distinct. Comparisons with other ecosystems revealed that rhodolith beds have similar diversity of macroinvertebrates. We also found that four of the six tested variables predicted 85 % of the variability observed in the vagile macroinvertebrate community (i.e. average diameter, depth, biomass of macroalgae and density of rhodoliths in the bed). These variables should be taken into account in future research in modeling the biodiversity associated with the rhodolith beds. This is especially relevant in the SW Atlantic where the rhodolith beds seem to harbor an associated biodiversity greater than previous works had indicated, moreover, they represent one of the main ecosystems that are often superimposed with mining activities.

The genus Pariphinotus Kunkel, 1910 comprises a total of six species around the world, with circumtropical and subtropical distribution, commonly occurring in shallow waters, in soft bottoms and algae, including a previous record of P. seclusus (Shoemaker, 1933) from Brazil. Material examined was collected by SCUBA diving, from rhodolith beds, 12 meters deep, at the Fernando de Noronha Archipelago, off the northeastern Brazilian coast. The new Brazilian species described here can be diagnosed by a unique combination of character states present in other species of the genus. However, it has two exclusive characteristics, distinguishing it from the group: medial apex of pleopod 3 peduncle with two small hook setae, and uropod 1 peduncle not exceeding the apex of telson.

Synopia ultramarina Dana, 1853 is considered a circumtropical species and was originally described based on material collected from two localities near halfway between the southwestern Africa and northeastern Brazil. The species is redescribed here with samples from Fernando de Noronha Archipelago, Pernambuco state, northeastern Brazil. The material examined was collected by SCUBA diving, from rhodolith beds, in Ressureta Channel, between Meio and Rata Islands. Additional material was collected from off Ceará state coast, during environmental consultancies, by Petrobras S. A., and off Pernambuco state coast, during the Project REVIZEE NE IV. Discussion on morphological variations of the species is presented, based on the studied material and previous descriptions in the literature. RESUMO Synopia ultramarina Dana, 1853 é considerada uma espécie circumtropical e foi originalmente descrita com material coletado em duas localidades, a meio caminho entre o sudoeste da África e o nordeste do Brasil. A espécie é redescrita aqui com amostras do Arquipélago de Fernando de Noronha, estado de Pernambuco, nordeste do Brasil. O material estudado foi coletado por mergulho autônomo, em camas de rodolitos, no canal Ressureta, entre as ilhas do Meio e Rata. Material adicional foi coletado ao largo da costa do estado do Ceará, durante consultorias ambientais coordenadas pela Petrobras S. A., e ao largo da costa do estado de Pernambuco, durante o Projeto REVIZEE NE IV. É apresentada discussão sobre as variações morfológicas da espécie, baseada no material estudado e em descrições prévias na literatura.

Four new species of Pseudharpinia Schellenberg, 1931 are described. The material examined was collected during the Mini Biological Trawl project, off Atlantic’s southwestern coast on the states of Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, Santa Catarina and Rio Grande do Sul with rectangular dredges at 25 to 500 meters depth. All the new species described present the following remarkable character states that make them easily distinguishable from their congeners: P. bonhami sp. nov. has pereopod 7 basis with 6 large spines posteroventrally; P. jonesyi sp. nov. exhibits pereopod 6 basis with a long acute spiny-projection posteriorly; P. pagei sp. nov. presents head with ventrolateral lines, antenna 1 primary flagellum with stout article 1, gnathopod 2 palm excavate and with slightly serrate palmar hump; P. planti sp. nov. presents head with dorsal keel and ventrolateral line, elongate flagella article 1 of antenna 1, pereopods 3–4 carpus anterior margin with a comb-like structure distally and pereopod 7 merus strongly produced posteroventrally. An identification key for all species of Pseudharpinia of the world is provided.

Two new species of the genus Cephalophoxoides Gurjanova, 1977 are described. The material examined was collected during the Mini Biological Trawl (MBT) project, off Brazil’s southeastern coast on the states of Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo, at depths ranging from 34 to 75 meters. Cephalophoxoides fortisetus sp. nov. resembles C. homilis (Barnard, 1960) in some general aspects of mandible, propodus of gnathopods 1–2, basis of pereopod 5 and rami of uropod 1. However, it can be distinguished by the latter species mainly by distinct characters on the maxilliped, gnathopod 1, uropod 2 and uropod 3. Also, the new species presents 1 short and 2 long stout setae on the lobes of telson as a notable character. Cephalophoxoides obtusimanus sp. nov. can be distinguished from its congeners by presenting gnathopod 1 with an obtuse and weakly chelate palm as an exclusive character of the genus. An identification key for all species of Cephalophoxoides of the world is provided.

Colomastigids are small, commensal marine amphipods distributed worldwide. Here we present descriptions of three new species of Colomastix Grube, 1861 from Todos-os-Santos Bay (Bahia state), and separately identification keys to males and females of all known Colomastix species from the Atlantic Ocean. Males of Colomastix iemanja sp. nov. can be distinguished from all others in the genus especially by the bifurcate apex of inner ramus of uropod 1, with highly asymmetric branches surrounded by a membranous-like structure. Males of Colomastix tubulosa sp. nov. can be distinguished from all others in the genus especially by the tube-like morphology of the apex of inner ramus of uropod 1, the morphology of the distalmost palmar process of gnathopod 2 and by the expanded inner ramus of uropod 2. Females of Colomastix iemanja sp. nov. and Colomastix tubulosa sp. nov. are the only species in the Atlantic with a pleated apex on dactylus of gnathopod 2, besides Colomastix trispinosa Silvany, Alves & Senna, 2019. Colomastix marielle sp. nov. can be distinguished from all other species in the genus by the elongate carpus of pereopod 5 of females and by the rudder-like morphology of the apex of inner ramus of uropod 1 of males. These three new species increase the number of Colomastix in the Atlantic from 18 to 21, and are amongst the first records of the suborder Colomastigidea Lowry & Myers, 2017 from Brazilian waters.

Material collected from three different states of the northeastern region of Brazil (Ceará, Rio Grande do Norte and Bahia) is analyzed. Four new lysianassid species of the genera Aruga and Shoemakerella are described. This paper includes the first record of Aruga in Brazilian waters and an identification key to world species of Aruga and Shoemakerella.

The suborder Colomastigidea consists essentially of small commensal amphipods and, to the date, no species are known from Brazilian waters. Here, a new species (Colomastix trispinosa sp. nov.) of the genus Colomastix is described from the Northeastern Brazilian coast, Ceará state. The new species is distinguished from the others in the genus especially by the male morphology of the palm of gnathopod 2 and the apex of inner ramus of uropod 1, as well as for the combination of other characters. In addition, it is the first Atlantic species to have a pleated apex on dactylus of female gnathopod 2.

A new species of the genus Ceradocus Costa, 1853 is described from Northeastern Brazil. This species is unique in having: (1) male gnathopod 2 propodus palm ornamented, palmar corner defined by a soft spine; (2) spines along the entire posterior margin of epimeral plate 3, (3) telson with very long apical setae. This new species is the second species of this genus in Brazil. An updated taxonomic key to the Ceradocus of the world is also provided.

Box-corer samples taken between 700 and 2000 m depth on the slope of the Campos Basin, southeastern Brazilian deep sea, provided the material for the description of two new genera in the family Urothoidae, Carangolioides gen. nov. and Coronaurothoe gen. nov., and three new species: Carangolioides castellatus sp. nov., Carangolioides hamatus sp. nov. and Coronaurothoe rotunda sp. nov. Carangolioides gen. nov. differs from other urothoid genera by the presence of a distolateral projection on the outer lobes of the lower lip and the distally truncated margin of the upper lip, while Coronaurothoe gen. nov. differs by the mandibular molar being triturative with a distal crown of stout setae. In this study, we provide detailed descriptions and illustrations of the new taxa. An identification key to genera of Urothoidae is also provided. The oribatid mite genus Mucronothrus is recorded for the first time in Brazil. A new species, Mucronothrus braziliensis sp. nov. is described from macrophytes in a cool (12.5oC) spring on the Campo Belo River spring and Brejo da Lapa reservoir, National Park Itatiaia of Brazil, on the basis of adults and tritonymphs. This species is morphologically similar to Mucronothrus nasalis (Willmann) and Mucronothrus willmanni Norton, Behan-Pelletier & Wang; however, it differs from both by the morphology of the bothridial setae, length of notogastral setae cp and position of epimeral setae 2a. Entre fevereiro de 2009 a junho de 2012, 368 espécimes de nove espécies de peixes marinhos (Osteichthyes) coletados ao longo da costa do Estado do Rio de Janeiro (21° - 23° S, 41° - 45° W), foram necropsiados para estudar sua fauna parasita de Copepoda e Isopoda. Foram identificadas 11 espécies de copépodes e três espécies de isópodes parasitos. Sendo coletados 852 espécimes de copépodes e quatro de isópodes. O mais prevalente e abundante dentre os crustáceos parasitos foi Taeniacanthus lagocephali Pearse, 1952, enquanto Coryphaena hippurus Linnaeus, 1758 foi a espécie de hospedeiro com a maior diversidade de espécies de ectoparasitos. Os gêneros Ceratothoa Dana, 1852 e Mothocya Hope, 1851 são registrados pela primeira vez para o Brasil neste estudo.

Surveying the fauna in conservation areas is an important strategy to recognize patterns of richness and endemism and to reduce gaps related to geographical distribution. This study presents the first record of cladocerans in the Parque Nacional do Itatiaia, Southeastern Brazil. Alona ossiani, Alona guttata, Alona iheringula, Alona yara, and Briospylus repens were observed in different environments. Here, we provide the taxonomic status and geographic distribution of each species observed in the Parque Nacional do Itatiaia.

The lysianassoid species Eurythenes thurstoni Stoddart & Lowry, 2004 is recorded for the first time to the Southern Atlantic Ocean, with material collected from the South Mid-Atlantic Ridge during the MAR-ECO Project expeditions. A espécie Amphipoda Chelorchestia darwini (Müller, 1864) é registrada pela primeira vez em associação ao "Bostrychietum", uma associação de algas aderidas em pneumatóforos, rizóforos e troncos das árvores dos manguezais, incluindo cianobactérias e clorofíceas, porém com grande dominância das rodofïceas Bostrychia Mont., Caloglossa (Harv.) G. Martens e Catenella Grev. As coletas foram realizadas em períodos de maré baixa, no manguezal do Portinho, município de Praia Grande, Baixada Santista, estado de São Paulo. As amostras foram coletadas por raspagem de uma área de 10 cm x 5 cm (50 cm²), delimitada por um molde vazado de plástico. Foram coletados 128 espécimes, sendo 13 (10,15%) machos, 57 (44,53%) fêmeas e 58 (45,31%) juvenis. A densidade variou de 2 a 13 indivíduos por 50 cm², com média de 6,52 ± 3.02/50 cm².

This paper describes a species of the genus Cyphocaris Boeck, 1871, the first record of the family Cyphocarididae Lowry & Stoddart, 1997 from Brazil. Two specimens, both females, were found in the stomach contents of a tuna caught in the Saint Peter and Saint Paul Archipelago. The new species is characterized by coxae 4 and 5 both large, coxa 4 partially overlapping coxae 2–3; coxa of pereopod 5 with ventral laminar projection and well-developed anteroventral lobe, broadly rounded and apically folded backwards, basis with anterior margin broadly rounded and posterior margin with large subacute naked projection (or spur); uropod 3, outer ramus paddle-shaped; and telson elongate and deeply cleft, with a nail.

The genus Elasmopus is the most diverse in the Family Maeridae. Five new species and new records of Elasmopus from the Brazilian coast are herein described. The specimens were collected in intertidal and subtidal zones along the Northeastern Brazilian coast between 2010 and 2014. The distribution of Elasmopus longipropodus along the coast is extended . Eighteen species of Elasmopus are known from Brazil, not including these five new species. An identification key to the species of Elasmopus is provided.

A new species Peramphithoe conlanae sp. nov. is described from Todos os Santos Bay, Bahia, Northeast Brazil. The new species is characterized by the morphology of male gnathopod 1 coxa with anteroventral corner acute, palm transverse bearing a robust seta on the palmar corner and dactylus 2 × palm length, gnathopod 2 with propodus oval, palm extremely acute, concave and lacking processes or robust setae, pereopods 5 and 6 with merus and carpus inflated. This paper increases the number of described species in the genus to 22. It is the first record of the genus Peramphithoe from Brazilian waters.

The gammarellid genus Nuuanu J. L. Barnard, 1970 is described for the first time from Brazilian waters, on the coast of the state of Espirito Santo. Nuuanu peroa sp. n. shares the diagnostic characters of the genus, such as the gnathopods 1 and 2 subchelate, dissimilar in size and shape, pereopod 7 with basis shield-like and posteriorly crenulate, and uropod 3 with both rami short, but inner ramus less than half the length of outer ramus. However, the new species differs from the others in the genus in that it is the only one that has the anteroventral corner of the head produced in a stout acuminate spine. A new species of the amphipod family Phoxocephalidae Sars, 1895, Pseudharpinia tupinamba sp. nov., is described from southeastern Brazilian continental shelf. The new species is closely related to the type-species of the genus, P. dentata Schellenberg, 1931 described from Magellan Province, and was misidentified as the latter species by some authors in the past. Pseudharpinia tupinamba sp. nov. differs from P. dentata by the number of articles in the accessory flagellum of antenna 1, ratio of length and width of the propodus of pereopod 6, size of the posteroventral lobe of the basis of pereopod 7, presence of slender setae in posterior margin of epimeral plate 3, presence of a corona of cuticular spines in dorsodistal margin of peduncle of uropod 2, ratio of length of the inner ramus and the first article of outer ramus of uropod 3, ratio of length and width of the telson, and presence of slender setae on the lateral margins of telson. The new described species is the unique of this genus known from the Brazilian continental shelf.

The genus Elasmopus has a worldwide distribution with most species living in warm waters. This work describes two new species, both from off the northeast Brazilian coast, including its oceanic banks of Fernando de Noronha Chain. The first new species, E. karamani sp. nov., is easily recognized by palm of gnathopod 2 with a medial concave portion, posterior margin of basis of pereopod 5 and 6 concave, epimeron 3 produced in a sharp spine, and the uropod 3 rami 2.4 times the peduncle length. The other one, E. lejeunei sp. nov., is very similar to E. balkomanus Thomas & Barnard, 1989 and E. lemaitrei Ortiz & Lalana, 1994 in having propodus of gnathopod 2 without palmar corner and posterior margin of basis of pereopod 5 concave. However, it differs from those by presenting gnathopod 2 with a weakly developed process near hinge of dactylus with some robust setae, followed by two tubercles. The propodus inner face presents one ridged line, about 1/3 of propodus length, and perpendicular lines of setae, from the proximal portion of the ridged line almost to the dactylus hinge. A key to all species of the genus Elasmopus recorded in the Brazilian coast is given.

A fauna de anfipodes associada ao cultivo comercial de Kappaphicus alvarezii foi avaliada a partir de tres locais de amostragem na Baia de Sepetiba, sul do estado do Rio de Janeiro, em uma pesquisa de campo qualitativa, realizada em duas campanhas, verao e inverno de 2011. O material foi coletado a partir dos organismos esclerobiontes colonizadores das estruturas de cultivo. Os locais de coleta estao localizados em praias nao expostas, uma no continente e as outras duas na Ilha de Itacuruca. Foram identificados 11 especies de Amphipoda, das quais uma e registrada pela primeira vez para a costa do estado do Rio de Janeiro. Duas especies nao foram possiveis de identificar a nivel especifico e talvez se tratem de especies ainda nao descritas para a ciencia.

The species of the amphipod family Melphidippidae are distributed worldwide in marine habitats, but there is no record of this family from Brazil so far. A new genus and species of Melphidippidae are described from Brazilian waters. Stebbingiella gen. nov. is monotypic and is distinguished from the other genera of the family by the presence of: antenna 1 with accessory flagellum 7-articulate, lateral cephalic lobe subacute, with globular eyes extremely produced, reaching beyond the second article of peduncle of antenna 2; gnathopods stout and slightly subchelate; coxae 3 and 4 with strong anterior projection and coxae 5 and 7 with strong posterior projection; telson cleft, not fully movable, with two globular lobes, about 2X wider than long. Stebbingiella globulosa sp. nov. is the first species of Melphidippidae recorded from Brazilian waters.
