Virtual prototyping combined with additive manufacturing technologies are opening new horizons in healthcare and biomimetic medical device personalisation is becoming feasible and competitive. Finite element-based optimisation combined with metallic additive manufacturing has already demonstrated the physical prototyping of interesting topologies for innovative articular prostheses. However, metallic implants are biomechanically and biologically suboptimal and a shift to ceramic materials, for bone replacement and articular implants, could result interesting. To this end, challenges liked to the engineering design of large-sized topology optimised ceramic implants and their additive manufacture still need to be overcome and exemplified. Accordingly, the whole engineering design of innovative short stem hip prostheses is presented here. Different approaches to the virtual prototyping of massive ceramic implants, involving strategies for their topology optimisation, are tested and systematically compared from biomechanical and mechanobiological perspectives. After virtual validation, the selected alternatives are successfully prototyped employing lithography-based ceramic manufacturing of alumina-toughened zirconia, which constitutes a design-enabled manufacturing breakthrough considering the massive implants achieved. Non-destructive evaluation using X-ray computed tomography allows for quantitative quality control and defect detection. Summarising, the study provides a systematic knowledge-based methodology for the engineering of topology optimised ceramic implants for critically sized defects with remarkable biomechanical and mechanobiological performance.

Nickel-titanium (NiTi) or nitinol alloys exhibit high corrosion resistance, mechanical strength, biocompatibility, and smart properties, rendering them ideal materials for active biomedical devices. Traditional manufacturing techniques struggle with these alloys, prompting the adoption of Laser Powder Bed Fusion (L-PBF) as a viable alternative for producing geometrically challenging features. However, L-PBF inherently introduces geometric inconsistencies and surface defects, necessitating post-processing. Electropolishing and chemical etching, while effective for surface smoothing, result in non-conformal material removal, potentially altering the designed geometry. This study examines the use of machining as a post-processing method to achieve uniform material removal and maintain geometric fidelity. Planar spring-shaped actuators were fabricated via L-PBF and subsequently machined to their final geometry using a Computer Numerical Controlled (CNC) system. The actuators were assessed for geometric accuracy and shape memory properties. Objectives: The evidence on water intake in the prevention of kidney function decline is scarce at population level in well-being individuals at high cardiovascular risk. Therefore, we aimed to longitudinally evaluate the associations between total water intake and subtypes and kidney function, through estimated-Glomerular Filtration Rate (eGFR). Methods: Three-year prospective analysis conducted in 1986 older adults (aged 55–75 year) with overweight/obesity and metabolic syndrome from the PREDIMED-Plus study. Water intake was assessed using validated beverage and food frequency questionnaires. Serum creatinine-based eGFR (SCr-based eGFR; ml/min/1.73 m2) was estimated using the CKD-EPI equation at baseline, one-year and 3-years of follow-up. Mixed-effects linear regression models were fitted to evaluate the associations between baseline total water intake and subtypes, and SCr-based eGFR over 3-years of follow-up. Results: Participants in the highest baseline tertile of total water intake, plain water and water from all fluids showed a lower decrease in SCr-based eGFR after 3-years of follow-up, compared to those in the lowest tertile. Participants with the highest tap water consumption showed a lower SCr-based eGFR decline after 1-year and 3-years of follow-up, in comparerd to participants in the lowest intake category (T3 vs. T1: β: 1.4 ml/min/1.73 m2; 95%CI: 0.5–2.3, β: 1.0; 95%CI: 0.1–2.0, respectively). Conclusions: Plain water rather than other water sources, and especially tap water, was associated with lower kidney function decline assessed through eGFR over 3-years of follow-up, in older individuals at high cardiovascular risk. Polydora hoplura is an invasive species and a harmful pest in commercial shellfish aquaculture, particularly for farmed abalone species. Different lines of treatment for Polydora affecting abalone have been explored, but with limited success. Using selective breeding to increase abalone resistance to and reduce shell damage from Polydora infestation could be a promising alternative. However, in abalone there is currently no information on the genetic variability for resistance to Polydora infestation. In the present study, heritability (h2) of traits associated with Pacific abalone resistance to P. hoplura were estimated after challenging abalone juveniles with trojan abalones heavily infested, using a nested experimental design, with 1 male crossed with 2–4 females. The heritability values were low but significant for some of those traits: survival h2=0.09; Infestation Intensity at Q50 h2 = 0.16 ± 0.11; and the proportion of the shell area occupied by blisters caused by the mud-worms h2 = 0.29 ± 0.14. These results suggest a significant potential for improving resistance or tolerance to P. hoplura infestation through selective breeding in Pacific abalone.

Food insecurity (FI) expresses irregular access to sufficient, safe, and nutritious food. We analyze the association between clusters of sociodemographic characteristics and FI in university students from Mexico. The Latin American and Caribbean Food Security Scale was applied, and household type, socioeconomic status (SES), and the characteristics of the head of the household, among others, were asked in a cross-sectional study. We performed Two-Step cluster analysis and logistic regression models. We included 466 university students (72.5% women, 47% with FI). We identified three clusters; Cluster-1 (n = 163) included a single-parent (37.4%) or co-resident/roommate (27%) household type, middle SES (63.2%); the head of the household is usually a woman (76.1%), single (71.8%), and with bachelor’s degree (41.7%) or less educational level (46.6%). Cluster-2 (n = 144) included the nuclear (89.6%) household type, high SES (76.4%); the head of the household is usually a man (79.2%), in a relationship (99.3%), and with a bachelor’s degree (63.2%) or graduate level (33.3%). Cluster-3 (n = 147) is very similar to Cluster-2. The difference is that Cluster-3 includes middle SES (70.1%), and the head of the household’s educational level is high school or less (100%). Only belonging to Cluster-1 was positively associated with FI (OR = 1.96, 95%CI: 1.24, 3.09). These results show the interrelationships between multiple sociodemographic characteristics and should contribute to developing interventions that simultaneously address numerous sociodemographic factors to diminish FI in university students.

We aimed to analyze the association between food insecurity (FI) and academic performance in university students, including mental health and sleep quality (SQ), in an association model. A cross-sectional design included university students (n = 466, 72.5% women) from Mexico. We applied the Latin American and Caribbean Food Security Scale, the Depression Anxiety and Stress Scale (DASS-21), and the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index. Students self-reported their academic grading (AG) and perceptions about their academic performance. Spearman’s rho and multiple logistic regression models were used. Almost half (47%) experienced some level of FI. The median AG was 95. AG was not significantly (p > 0.05) correlated with FI, nor with depression, anxiety, stress, and SQ. Considering mental health and SQ, moderate/severe FI remained significantly associated with perceived overall progress in college (OR: 2.96; 95%CI: 1.49, 5.88) and attendance to classes (OR:3.14; 95%CI: 1.19, 8.28) as poor or regular, and it was positively related to perceiving difficulties in completing their studies (OR:2.75; 95%CI: 1.43, 5.29). Stress, anxiety, depression symptoms, and poor SQ were also significantly associated with poor/regular perception of academic performance. These findings highlight the need to address psychological and nutritional factors in university students to promote their well-being and academic success.

This innovative study proposes a revolutionary strategy to enhance the efficacy and customization of hip arthroplasty, focusing on a short prosthesis design meticulously tailored to individual patient needs, with special emphasis on the femoral stem. The implemented methodology involves data collection through a meshless software, which quantifies the stress/strain shielding resulting from femoral insertion. Automatic pre-processing is performed using clustering algorithms, allowing the data to be divided into anatomical areas of the body. Subsequently, training of machine learning algorithms, such as random forests and stacking, is carried out to accurately predict the shielding caused by the stem. These predictions are based on design parameters, specifically linked to the patient's femoral cavity dimensions and their relationship to stem size, which are quantified through dimensionless parameters and serve as model inputs. The reliability of the models is confirmed by evaluation of data from patient with different femoral morphology than those used during the training and validation phases. This approach not only provides fast and cost-effective analyses for medical experts and engineers, but the described methodology can also be successfully extended to the development of alternative arthroplasty prostheses, such as shoulder and knee implants.

Abstract Background University students are often affected by food insecurity (FI) and this situation has been associated with low consumption of fruit/vegetables and high intake of added sugars and sweet drinks. However, there needs to be more evidence on the association between FI and dietary patterns (DPs), assessing the overall diet and allowing analysis of commonly consumed food combinations. We aimed to analyze the association between FI and DPs in university students’ households. Methods We used data from 7659 university student households from the 2018 Mexican National Household Income and Expenditure Survey (ENIGH, for its acronym in Spanish). We obtained FI levels (mild, moderate, and severe) using the validated Mexican Food Security Scale (EMSA, Spanish acronym). Two DPs were identified by principal component analysis based on the weekly frequency of consumption of 12 food groups. Multivariate logistic regression adjusted by university student and household’s characteristics was applied. Results Compared to food security, households with mild-FI (OR:0.34; 95%CI:0.30, 0.40), moderate-FI (OR:0.20; 95%CI:0.16, 0.24) or severe-FI (OR:0.14; 95%CI:0.11, 0.19) were less likely to adhere to the dietary pattern “Fruits, vegetables and foods rich in animal protein” (fruits, vegetables, meat, fish or seafood, dairy products, and starchy vegetables). In addition, people with severe-FI (OR:0.51; 95% CI:0.34, 0.76) were also less likely to adhere to the dietary pattern “Traditional-Westernized” (pulses, oils or fats, sugar, sweets, industrialized drinks, foods made from corn/maize, wheat, rice, oats or bran, coffee, tea and eggs). Conclusions In these households FI impairs the ability to consume a healthy dietary pattern (fruits/vegetables and foods rich in animal protein). In addition, the intake of foods typical of the Mexican food culture reflecting the local Western dietary pattern is compromised in households with severe-FI.

Abstract Evidence suggests that iron status may be linked to symptoms of childhood attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), but there is little data available on the relationship between iron status in pregnancy and the risk of developing ADHD. And the data that does exist is inconsistent. Our aim here is to assess the effect of maternal serum ferritin (SF) and haemoglobin (Hb) levels during pregnancy on manifestations of ADHD in children at 7 years of age. This prospective study analysed data from 1204 mother–child pairs from three Spanish cohorts participating in the INMA project. Maternal SF and Hb levels during pregnancy and other mother and child characteristics were collected. The children’s ADHD behaviours were reported by their parents using Conners’ Parent Rating Scale-Revised Short Form (CPRS-R:S). In the unadjusted regression analysis, maternal SF was positively associated with children’s T-scores on the subscales Cognitive problems/Inattention (β: 0.63, 95%CI 0.06–1.19; p = 0.029) and ADHD index (β: 0.72, 95%CI 0.20–1.24; p = 0.007). These associations were not present after multivariate adjustment or stratification by first and second trimester of pregnancy. The Hb levels were not related to any of the CPRS-R:S subscales in unadjusted or multivariate-adjusted models. We observed no association between maternal SF or Hb levels and the risk of ADHD symptomatology (T-score ≥ 65 for CPRS-R:S subscales). Our results suggest that neither maternal SF nor Hb levels during pregnancy are related to ADHD symptoms in 7-year-old children.

Utilizando métodos innovadores, exploramos patrones de satisfacción con el tiempo libre en adultos chilenos. Mediante un análisis de clases latentes, identificamos cuatro patrones de satisfacción diferentes. Por medio de regresión logística multinomial, examinamos los factores sociodemográficos que determinan la probabilidad de pertenecer a uno u otro de estos patrones. Los resultados muestran que la edad es el principal factor que define esta probabilidad, siendo los mayores de 56 años los más propensos a pertenecer a la clase de mayor satisfacción. Esta conclusión es coherente con los datos empíricos sobre la disponibilidad objetiva de tiempo libre. En cuanto a los ingresos, los individuos del quintil 4 tienen menos probabilidades de pertenecer al grupo de mayor satisfacción. No observamos diferencias al comparar hombres y mujeres. Sin embargo, sí se observan al evaluar la intersección entre el sexo y las condiciones de vivir en pareja y tener hijos de 0 a 4 años. Nuestros hallazgos cuestionan los patrones de paternidad en parejas heterosexuales en Chile y sugieren que las mujeres en tales condiciones tienen menos probabilidades de pertenecer a la clase de mayor satisfacción.

4D printing is the additive manufacturing (3D printing) of objects that can transform their shape in a controlled and predictable way when subjected to external stimuli. A thermo-responsive shape memory polymer (SMP) is a highly suitable material to 4D print smart devices, due to its actuation function and the capability of recovering its original shape from the deformed one upon heating. This study presents the results of employing an epoxy resin in the additive manufacturing of complex-shaped smart devices with shape-morphing properties using laser stereolithography (SLA). To quantify the shape memory behaviour of the shape memory epoxy (SMEp), we first investigate the thermomechanical properties of the 3D-printed specimens in a tensile testing machine coupled with an environmental thermal chamber. This approach allows us to determine the shape fixity and recovery of SMEp. Next, we propose effective designs of complex-shaped devices, with the aim of promoting shape morphing through micro-actuators and compliant joints acting as active regions in combination with multiplying mechanisms or kinematic chains in each of the devices. We manufacture the complex-shaped prototypes by using SLA directly from the computer-aided designs. The shape memory trials of the 3D-printed prototypes reveal quite precise shape recovery of the devices, illustrating their shape-memory. In fact, the inclusion of micro-actuators and compliant joints within the complex-geometry devices allows for local triggering, deformation and recovery, resulting in a prompt response of the devices to heat. Therefore, innovative designs, along with the suitable smart material and high-quality manufacturing process, lead to 4D printed devices with fast actuation and shape-morphing properties. Overall, this research may contribute to the development of smart materials and 4D printing technology for applications in fields such as biomedical engineering, robotics, transport and aerospace engineering.

Metamaterials are engineered materials conceived and designed to achieve very special or even unique physical properties, which depend on the designed micro or nanostructures, more than on the chemical composition of the raw materials employed for their fabrication. Normally metamaterials are made of periodic repetitions of unit cells or Boolean combinations of lattices or porous building blocks. Metasurfaces are the quasi-two-dimensional version of metamaterials and are generally applied to controlling electromagnetic and acoustic waves reaching them. Metamaterials are mainly created through high-precision additive manufacturing technologies, while metasurfaces are normally obtained using micromanufacturing techniques from the electronics industry and laser patterning methods. Consequently, the potential benefits and industrial applications of multi-scale or hierarchical metastructures, which could be obtained by merging metamaterials and metasurfaces, remain unexplored. Through the innovative combination of 3D CAD modelling resources and specific tools for computational mapping of topographical 2D images this study validates the possibility of texturing the building blocks and unit cells of metamaterials, hence reaching designs with interwoven metamaterials and metasurfaces. These microtextured lattices are additively manufactured, using two-photon polymerisation, to demonstrate the feasibility of bridging the gap between metamaterials and metasurfaces and analyse current challenges and potential applications of these digital materials.

Abstract There is little evidence regarding the role that consuming a Mediterranean diet (MedDiet) during pregnancy plays in foetal growth. We therefore examined the relationship between maternal MedDiet adherence during pregnancy and anthropometric measures and small-for-gestational-age (SGA) at birth in a Spanish population on the north-eastern Mediterranean coast of Spain. Prospective analysis involved 614 mother–newborn pairs from the ECLIPSES study. Diet during pregnancy was assessed using a validated food frequency questionnaire, and a relative MedDiet score (rMedDiet) was calculated. We studied atmospheric corrosion on Rapa Nui Island, using galvanized and non-galvanized SAE 1020 steel samples exposed on racks. We also added Charpy samples of both materials to directly determine the effect of corrosion rate on these materials' impact toughness. The results indicated a correlation between corrosion rate and toughness loss in the studied materials. In the corrosion study, we could also demonstrate the effect from increased insular population growth on contaminants which aid atmospheric corrosivity. Results showed that atmospheric SO2 has tripled compared with similar corrosion studies done 20 years ago (Mapa Iberoamericano de Corrosión, MICAT), increasing corrosion rates. Our results show how human factors can influence changes in environmental variables that strengthen corrosion.

Las crisis gelásticas son una forma rara de epilepsia no convulsiva, más frecuente en población adulta joven y casi exclusiva de hamartomas hipotalámicos; sin embargo, hay otras localizaciones no hipotalámicas poco descritas en las cuales se presentan estas crisis, como el lóbulo temporal. El caso que presentamos muestra una manifestación atípica: un paciente de edad avanzada consultó por cambios en el comportamiento y risas inmotivadas; durante la hospitalización, se estableció la presencia de crisis gelásticas, las cuales fueron atribuidas a zona de gliosis temporal izquierda por antecedente de hematoma epidural en esta localización. Se concluye que este tipo de crisis epiléptica en población de la tercera edad es el resultado de etiologías distintas al hamartoma hipotalámico.

Abstract In this study, authors explore the application of modelling and additive layer manufacturing (ALM) for creating and testing materials with interlocking structures aimed to reduce the stress concentration along the edges of a typical lap joint. The effectiveness of this approach is discussed by means of modelling and experimental validation of joints with interlocking structures obtained by ALM. Considering the achieved results, ALM of interlocking structures constitutes an interesting alternative or complement to traditional joining processes, as it may help to minimize stress mismatches in the joining region. It may also prevent the use of adhesive or joining post processes, because the joint is created together with the joined components.

Abstract Atmospheric corona discharge devices are being studied as innovative systems for cooling, sterilization, and propulsion, in several industrial fields, from robotics to medical devices, from drones to space applications. However, their industrial scale implementation still requires additional understanding of several complex phenomena, such as corrosion, degradation, and fatigue behaviour, which may affect final system performance. This study focuses on the corrosive behaviour of wires that perform as a high-voltage electrode subject to DC positive corona discharge in atmospheric air. The experiments demonstrate that the non-thermal plasma process promotes the growth of the oxidative films and modifies the physicochemical properties of the materials chosen as corona electrodes, hence affecting device operation. Surfaces exposed to this non-thermal plasma are electrically characterized by negative exponential decay of time-depend power and analysed with SEM. Implications on performance are analysed and discussed.

Introducción: La amiloidosis hereditaria mediada por transtirretina es una enfermedad autosómica dominante, con compromiso sistémico y progresivo, que altera la función de múltiples órganos, y se asocia con una alta morbilidad y mortalidad. Se presenta compromiso neurológico, cardiaco, autonómico, oftalmológico y nefrológico, entre otros, que se relacionan con el genotipo del paciente. Estas alteraciones afectan la calidad de vida y tienen una relación directa con la mortalidad temprana en estos pacientes. La neuropatía periférica es un marcador temprano de la enfermedad. Su identificación permite un tratamiento temprano con terapias modificadoras de la enfermedad, en busca de la estabilización de la progresión de la enfermedad, lo cual, acompañado de un seguimiento adecuado, tiene un impacto positivo en la calidad de vida de los pacientes y una prolongación de la expectativa de vida. Objetivo: Estructurar una serie de recomendaciones adecuadas al entorno local sobre el tratamiento y seguimiento en pacientes con amiloidosis hereditaria mediada por transtirretina. Materiales y método: Se utilizó la metodología Delphi y se estableció como punto de corte un 75% de favorabilidad. Resultados y conclusiones: Se plantearon una serie de recomendaciones basadas en la evidencia disponible y las recomendaciones internacionales, aplicables al entorno local, sobre métodos diagnósticos que faciliten la detección temprana del paciente afectado y los parámetros de inicio del tratamiento y el seguimiento que mejoren la calidad de vida, disminuyan las complicaciones y aumenten la expectativa de vida de estos pacientes.

Introducción. El uso de bacterias promotoras de crecimiento vegetal puede ser una alternativa a integrar en estrategias de manejo del cultivo de uchuva mediante su incorporación en etapas de semillero, permitiendo obtener plántulas de mayor vigor que puedan tolerar el estrés biótico y abiótico al momento del trasplante. Objetivo. Evaluar la actividad promotora de crecimiento vegetal y capacidad endofítica de las bacterias Bacillus amyloliquefaciens Bs006 y Pseudomonas migulae Pf014 inoculadas durante la etapa de semillero de uchuva (Physalis peruviana L.). Materiales y métodos. Se realizó un experimento de abril a mayo de 2018 en invernadero ubicado en el Centro de Investigación Tibaitatá, Mosquera, Colombia, en un diseño de bloques completos al azar con tres repeticiones. Se inocularon rizobacterias por separado en el sustrato 1 x 108 UFC mL-1 y se analizaron las variables fisiológicas biomasa seca (g) de raíz, tallo y hojas, la longitud final (cm), el área foliar (cm2) y número de hojas, adicionalmente se comprobó su endofitismo mediante la evaluación de la colonización del tejido vegetal. Resultados. B. amyloliquefaciens Bs006 estimuló el crecimiento de plántulas a diferentes niveles, exhibiendo mayor capacidad de promoción que P. migulae Pf014, ya que aumentó la longitud de la planta en 34 %, y el crecimiento en tallo y raíz en 59 % y 16 % respectivamente; aumento de la biomasa seca de la raíz en 178 %, el tallo en 161 %, y de las hojas en 96 %. Las bacterias se aislaron del interior de los tejidos vegetales demostrando su comportamiento endofítico. Conclusiones. La respuesta positiva en todas las variables agronómicas evaluadas con la aplicación de B. amyloliquefaciens Bs006, indica que esta bacteria puede ser integrada al esquema de producción de la uchuva contribuyendo a potenciar la producción del cultivo.

Tissue engineering as a field may benefit from progressively implementing and spreading the use of standards, conceived to support the repeatability, replicability and efficient comparing of research results among experts in the field worldwide. Considering that scaffolds play a fundamental role in many tissue engineering strategies, it would be interesting to count with an internationally accepted set of geometries, acting as a library of lattices, porous materials and scaffolding structures, which could be employed for comparative purposes among materials and manufacturing technologies under development. To this end, an open-source library of tissue engineering scaffolds has been implemented. This library stands out for providing a comprehensive collection of scaffolds blueprints, designed considering the specific features of most additive manufacturing technologies applicable to tissue engineering and biofabrication. Besides, the library has been developed focusing on FAIR data principles along the development, for promoting: Findability, Accessibility, Interoperability and Reusability. The scaffolds are shared as open-source medical devices with the necessary documentation for facilitating their application. Similar initiatives may be synergically integrated towards an ISO standard on tissue engineering scaffolds.

BackgroundDiets high in acid load may contribute to kidney function impairment. This study aimed to investigate the association between dietary acid load and 1-year changes in glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) and urine albumin/creatinine ratio (UACR).MethodsOlder adults with overweight/obesity and metabolic syndrome (mean age 65 ± 5 years, 48% women) from the PREDIMED-Plus study who had available data on eGFR (n = 5,874) or UACR (n = 3,639) at baseline and after 1 year of follow-up were included in this prospective analysis. Dietary acid load was estimated as potential renal acid load (PRAL) and net endogenous acid production (NEAP) at baseline from a food frequency questionnaire. Linear and logistic regression models were fitted to evaluate the associations between baseline tertiles of dietary acid load and kidney function outcomes. One year-changes in eGFR and UACR were set as the primary outcomes. We secondarily assessed ≥ 10% eGFR decline or ≥10% UACR increase.ResultsAfter multiple adjustments, individuals in the highest tertile of PRAL or NEAP showed higher one-year changes in eGFR (PRAL, β: –0.64 ml/min/1.73 m2; 95% CI: –1.21 to –0.08 and NEAP, β: –0.56 ml/min/1.73 m2; 95% CI: –1.13 to 0.01) compared to those in the lowest category. No associations with changes in UACR were found. Participants with higher levels of PRAL and NEAP had significantly higher odds of developing ≥10% eGFR decline (PRAL, OR: 1.28; 95% CI: 1.07–1.54 and NEAP, OR: 1.24; 95% CI: 1.03–1.50) and ≥10 % UACR increase (PRAL, OR: 1.23; 95% CI: 1.04–1.46) compared to individuals with lower dietary acid load.ConclusionsHigher PRAL and NEAP were associated with worse kidney function after 1 year of follow-up as measured by eGFR and UACR markers in an older Spanish population with overweight/obesity and metabolic syndrome.

Abstract This study examines if overweight/obesity are related to higher impulsivity, food addiction and depressive symptoms, and if these variables could be modified after 1 year of a multimodal intervention (diet, physical activity, psychosocial support). 342 adults (55–75 years) with overweight/obesity and metabolic syndrome (MetS) from the PREDIMED-Plus Cognition study were randomized to the intervention or to the control group (lifestyle recommendations). Cognitive and psychopathological assessments were performed at baseline and after 1-year follow-up. At baseline, higher impulsivity was linked to higher food addiction and depressive symptoms, but not to body mass index (BMI). Food addiction not only predicted higher BMI and depressive symptoms, but also achieved a mediational role between impulsivity and BMI/depressive symptoms. After 1 year, patients in both groups reported significant decreases in BMI, food addiction and impulsivity. BMI reduction and impulsivity improvements were higher in the intervention group. Higher BMI decrease was achieved in individuals with lower impulsivity. Higher scores in food addiction were also related to greater post-treatment impulsivity. To conclude, overweight/obesity are related to higher impulsivity, food addiction and depressive symptoms in mid/old age individuals with MetS. Our results also highlight the modifiable nature of the studied variables and the interest of promoting multimodal interventions within this population.

Abstract It remains unclear whether caffeinated beverages could have deleterious renal effects in elderly population with underlying comorbid conditions. We investigated the associations between coffee, tea, or caffeine intake and 1-year changes in glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) in a large Spanish cohort of overweight/obese elderly with metabolic syndrome (MetS). This prospective analysis includes 5851 overweight/obese adults (55–75 years) with MetS from the PREDIMED-Plus study. We assessed coffee, tea, and caffeine consumption from a validated food-frequency questionnaire and creatinine-based eGFR using the Chronic Kidney Disease Epidemiology Collaboration equation. Multivariate-adjusted regression models were applied to test associations between baseline coffee, tea, or caffeine intake and 1-year eGFR changes. Caffeinated coffee (> 2 cups/day) and tea (at least 1 cup/day) drinkers had 0.88 and 0.93 mL/min/1.73 m2 greater eGFR decrease respectively, compared to those with less than 1 cup/day of coffee consumption or non-tea drinkers. Furthermore, caffeinated coffee consumption of > 2 cups/day was associated with 1.19-fold increased risk of rapid eGFR decline > 3 mL/min/1.73 m2 (95% CI 1.01–1.41). Similarly, individuals in the highest (median, 51.2 mg/day) tertile of caffeine intake had a 0.87 mL/min/1.73 m2 greater eGFR decrease. Decaffeinated coffee was not associated with eGFR changes. In conclusion, higher consumption of caffeinated coffee, tea, and caffeine was associated with a greater 1-year eGFR decline in overweight/obese adults with MetS.

Resumen: Introducción: el síncope es un síntoma complejo de evaluar, que además representa un reto diagnóstico; la estratificación inadecuada del riesgo de los pacientes puede conllevar mal uso de los recursos en salud y aumentar así el costo derivado de la atención. Objetivo: comparar la incidencia de desenlaces a un año en pacientes con síncope de alto y bajo riesgo en cuatro hospitales de Bogotá. Metodología: estudio de cohorte retrospectiva, en el que se incluyeron pacientes mayores de 18 años que consultaron a urgencias por síncope, y que fueron seguidos desde febrero de 2013 hasta julio de 2015. Fueron clasificados en bajo y alto riesgo según la escala de Martin et al. Se hizo seguimiento telefónico para evaluar los desenlaces a un año. Resultados: los pacientes de alto riesgo tienen mayor frecuencia de mortalidad, recurrencia del síncope, requerimiento de hospitalización, eventos neurológicos y necesidad de intervención cardiovascular. La mortalidad global está alrededor del 6% y en el subgrupo de pacientes de mayor puntaje (4 puntos) asciende al 16,6%. La mayoría de eventos se presentaron en los primeros 6 meses de seguimiento. La mortalidad y la necesidad de intervención cardiovascular tuvieron un incremento de su frecuencia a medida que aumentó el puntaje de la escala. Conclusión: los pacientes clasificados en alto riesgo según la escala de Martin et al. tienen mayor frecuencia de desenlaces adversos a un año de seguimiento, y por tanto podrían beneficiarse de un estudio más amplio y expedito de la causa del síncope. Abstract: Introduction: Syncope is a complex symptom to assess, and is a diagnostic challenge. The inadequate risk stratification can lead to the inappropriate use of health resources and to an increase in the costs arising from the care. Objective: To compare the outcomes at one year in patients with high and low risk syncope in four Bogota hospitals. Material and method: A retrospective cohort study was conducted that included patients over 18 years-old that were seen in the Emergency Department due to a syncope. They were followed-up from February 2013 until July 2015. They were classified into low and high risk according to the score on the scale of Martin et al. At one year, a telephone call follow-up was made to assess the outcomes. Results: The high risk patients had higher rates of mortality and recurrence of syncope, required more hospital admissions, had more neurological events, and a greater need for cardiac intervention. The overall mortality was 6%, and in sub-group of patients with a higher score (4 points) it increased to 16.6%. The majority of events occurred in the first 6 months of follow-up. The mortality and the need for cardiovascular intervention were associated with the increase in the score on the scale. Conclusion: Patients classified as high risk according to the scale of Martin et al. are more likely to have adverse outcomes at one year of follow-up, and thus could benefit from a larger study and directed at the cause of the syncope.

Resumen: Introducción: estudios recientes han reportado fenómenos trombóticos o coagulopatía en pacientes con COVID-19. Hay posiciones divergentes en cuanto a la prevención, el diagnóstico y el tratamiento de estos fenómenos, y la práctica clínica actual está basada únicamente en deducciones por extensión a partir de estudios retrospectivos, series de casos, estudios observacionales y guías internacionales desarrolladas previas a la pandemia. Objetivo: establecer una serie de recomendaciones sobre prevención, diagnóstico y manejo de las complicaciones trombóticas asociadas a COVID-19. Métodos: se desarrolló una guía rápida en la que se aplicó el marco de la evidencia a la decisión (EtD) de GRADE y un sistema de participación iterativo, con análisis estadísticos y cualitativos de sus resultados. Resultados: se generaron 31 recomendaciones clínicas enfocadas a: a) Pruebas de coagulación en adultos sintomáticos con sospecha de infección o infección confirmada por SARS-CoV-2; b) Tromboprofilaxis en personas adultas con diagnóstico de COVID-19 (escalas de riesgo, tromboprofilaxis de manejo ambulatorio, intrahospitalario y duración de tromboprofilaxis después del egreso de hospitalización), c) Diagnóstico y tratamiento de las complicaciones trombóticas y d) Manejo de personas con indicación previa a usar agentes anticoagulantes. Conclusiones: las recomendaciones clínicas de este consenso orientan la toma de decisiones clínicas respecto a prevención, diagnóstico y tratamiento de fenómenos trombóticos en pacientes con COVID-19, y representan un acuerdo que ayudará a disminuir la dispersión en las prácticas clínicas acorde con el desafío que impone la pandemia. Abstract: Introduction: recent studies have reported the occurrence of thrombotic phenomena or coagulopathy in patients with COVID-19. There are divergent positions regarding the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of these phenomena, and current clinical practice is based solely on deductions by extension from retrospective studies, case series, observational studies, and international guidelines developed prior to the pandemic. Objective: to generate a group of recommendations on the prevention, diagnosis and management of thrombotic complications associated with COVID-19. Methods: a rapid guidance was carried out applying the GRADE Evidence to Decision (EtD) frameworks and an iterative participation system, with statistical and qualitative analysis. Results: 31 clinical recommendations were generated focused on: a) Coagulation tests in symptomatic adults with suspected infection or confirmed SARS CoV-2 infection; b) Thromboprophylaxis in adults diagnosed with COVID-19 (Risk scales, thromboprophylaxis for outpatient, in-hospital management, and duration of thromboprophylaxis after discharge from hospitalization), c) Diagnosis and treatment of thrombotic complications, and d) Management of people with previous indication of anticoagulant agents. Conclusions: recommendations of this consensus guide clinical decision-making regarding the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of thrombotic phenomena in patients with COVID-19, and represent an agreement that will help decrease the dispersion in clinical practices according to the challenge imposed by the pandemic.

Atmospheric corrosion of copper, exposed on a tropical island in the South-Central Pacific Ocean, was reported and compared with those of a very similar study at the same site conducted 20 years earlier. The new measurements—taken over three years of exposure, from 2010 to 2013—quantified corrosion by mass loss, characterized corrosion products by X-ray diffraction (DRX) and Raman techniques, observed the attack morphology by Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM), and evaluated the patina resistance using electrochemical techniques. The results showed a copper corrosivity category of C4, and the main copper patina compound, cuprite, was porous, nonhomogeneous, and thin. Electrochemical measurements showed cuprite layer growth as a function of the exposure time, and the morphology did not favor corrosion protection. Finally, when comparing the results to those of a study 22 years previous, the copper corrosion rates increased only slightly, even with increased contaminants associated with growing local populations and continuous tourism on the island.

Abstract Background This study explored the association between inactive time and measures of adiposity, clinical parameters, obesity, type 2 diabetes and metabolic syndrome components. It further examined the impact of reallocating inactive time to time in bed, light physical activity (LPA) or moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA) on cardio-metabolic risk factors, including measures of adiposity and body composition, biochemical parameters and blood pressure in older adults. Methods This is a cross-sectional analysis of baseline data from 2189 Caucasian men and women (age 55–75 years, BMI 27–40 Kg/m2) from the PREDIMED-Plus study (http://www.predimedplus.com/). All participants had ≥3 components of the metabolic syndrome. Inactive time, physical activity and time in bed were objectively determined using triaxial accelerometers GENEActiv during 7 days (ActivInsights Ltd., Kimbolton, United Kingdom). Multiple adjusted linear and logistic regression models were used. Isotemporal substitution regression modelling was performed to assess the relationship of replacing the amount of time spent in one activity for another, on each outcome, including measures of adiposity and body composition, biochemical parameters and blood pressure in older adults. Results Inactive time was associated with indicators of obesity and the metabolic syndrome. Abstract Several computational models, both continuum and discrete, allow for the simulation of collective cell behaviors in connection with challenges linked to disease modeling and understanding. Normally, discrete cell modelling employs quasi-infinite or boundary-less 2D lattices, hence modeling collective cell behaviors in Petri dish-like environments. The advent of lab- and organ-on-a-chip devices proves that the information obtained from 2D cell cultures, upon Petri dishes, differs importantly from the results obtained in more biomimetic micro-fluidic environments, made of interconnected chambers and channels. However, discrete cell modelling within lab- and organ-on-a-chip devices, to our knowledge, is not yet found in the literature, although it may prove useful for designing and optimizing these types of systems. Consequently, in this study we focus on the establishment of a direct connection between the computer-aided designs (CAD) of microfluidic systems, especially labs- and organs-on-chips (and their multi-chamber and multi-channel structures), and the lattices for discrete cell modeling approaches aimed at the simulation of collective cell interactions, whose boundaries are defined directly from the CAD models. We illustrate the proposal using a quite straightforward cellular automata model, apply it to simulating cells with different growth rates, within a selected set of microsystem designs, and validate it by tuning the growth rates with the support of cell culture experiments and by checking the results with a real microfluidic system.

Abstract Background Sarcopenia is a progressive age‐related skeletal muscle disorder associated with increased likelihood of adverse outcomes. Muscle wasting is often accompanied by an increase in body fat, leading to ‘sarcopenic obesity’. The aim of the present study was to analyse the association of lifestyle variables such as diet, dietary components, physical activity (PA), body composition, and inflammatory markers, with the risk of sarcopenic obesity. Methods A cross‐sectional analysis based on baseline data from the PREDIMED‐Plus study was performed. A total of 1535 participants (48% women) with overweight/obesity (body mass index: 32.5 ± 3.3 kg/m2; age: 65.2 ± 4.9 years old) and metabolic syndrome were categorized according to sex‐specific tertiles (T) of the sarcopenic index (SI) as assessed by dual‐energy X‐ray absorptiometry scanning. Anthropometrical measurements, biochemical markers, dietary intake, and PA information were collected. Linear regression analyses were carried out to evaluate the association between variables. Background: Chagas cardiomyopathy (CC) increases cardiovascular mortality associated with congestive heart failure (CHF), ventricular arrhythmias (VA), and sudden cardiac death (SCD). Different imaging techniques have been tested to assess disease progression and cardiac risk in individuals with Chagas disease (ChD). In this systematic review, we evaluated the accuracy in detecting cardiac complications in CC patients using cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR) and speckle tracking echocardiography (STE). Methods: A search was done on PubMed, Cochrane, and Embase for studies in humans over 18 years of age with ChD. Demographic data, research methodology, imaging parameters, and cardiac outcomes were extracted, and study quality was assessed, resulting in a narrative description. Results: Twelve studies with 1124 patients were analyzed. One study discovered a contractility pattern by STE. Four studies assessed the identification of Early Cardiac Impairment (ECI) and VA risk, respectively, while three studies evaluated the risk of SCD. Global Longitudinal Strain (GLS) identified patients with ECI (–18.5 ± 3.4% non-fibrosis vs –14.0 ± 5.8% fibrosis, p = 0.006 and –18 ± 2% non-fibrosis vs –15 ± 2% fibrosis, p = 0.004). The amount of fibrosis >11.78% or in two or more contiguous transmural segments were markers for VA risk. GLS and the amount of fibrosis were found to be predictors of SCD. Conclusions: STE may be considered a screening technique for identifying the subclinical status of CHF. CMR using Late Gadolinium Enhancement (LGE) is considered a relevant parameter for stratifying patients with ChD who are at risk of SCD. Fibrosis and GLS can be used as markers to categorize patients at risk for arrhythmias.

Interest in the development of electro-fluid-dynamic devices (EFDs) based on corona discharge is growing due to their advantages and applicability across different industrial sectors. On the one hand, their performance as forced convection motors, in terms of weight, volume, and absence of noise and moving parts, make them competitive against traditional systems such as fans. On the other hand, the actions of the corona discharge, in terms of elimination of viruses and bacteria, are already known. This paper studies the characteristics of corona discharge in terms of air flow for a new proposed configuration and geometry of electrodes. A systematic study is performed through a parametric study of the distances, power consumption, and size of the corona electrode. The characteristic voltage–current (CVCCs) and flow–pressure curves obtained provide design rules to use the generated corona discharge and the device itself, as a silent air propeller, which may also sterilize the surrounding environment and surfaces.

The study aim was to characterize executive function in 114 children with Down syndrome from a reference institution in Bogotá, Colombia. Children were screened with the Battelle Developmental Inventory to establish their developmental age. Eighty children with an equivalent mental age of 2–5.11 years were allocated to groups of 20 according to their mental age. Parents and teachers then completed the Behavior Rating Inventory of Executive Function-Preschool Version. We found a high variability and a low correlation between parent and teacher ratings. In general, children showed a specific profile characterized by weakness in the domains of working memory, shifting, planning, and organization, and strengths in the emotional control domain. These findings indicate a characteristic pattern of executive function in children with Down syndrome. This profile could form the basis for the planning of clinical assessment programs.

Micro, small and medium enterprises (MIPyMES) are the main engines that drive many economies around the world, since they are a fundamental part of the economic units and they generate most of the jobs and the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of countries. Rural businesses play an important social role in Mexico, both because of their role as job creators, buffers of social problems and as an instrument of social cohesion and stability. The objective of this research is to identify and describe those business characteristics that have a differentiated behavior in rural and urban businesses through a comparative statistical analysis. The investigation consisted in applying a semi-structured survey to 80 companies belonging to the National Statistical Directorate of Economic Units (DENUE) of the State of Mexico in 2016 and its subsequent analysis, by using an ANOVA of means and chi-square. There are a series of variables that show that rural and urban companies have a heterogeneous behavior, associated to the environment where they are developed. These variables are: administration and management, human capital, financing, access to markets, sector and scale of the company. The variables of seniority, consolidation gap, evolution of partners, breadth of the portfolio of goods and services, employability, sales destinations and market integration did not show statistically significant differences, so they may be considered similar in rural and urban companies. La presente investigación analizó las características de las empresas rurales y urbanas con la finalidad de determinar cuáles tienen un comportamiento diferenciado para establecer lineamientos que permitan focalizar los objetivos de política pública. La investigación consistió en la aplicación de una encuesta semiestructurada a 80 empresas del Estado de México en 2015; para el análisis de los datos se aplicaron técnicas de ANOVA de medias con prueba de Scheffé y de chi-cuadrada. Del conjunto de variables analizadas cinco resultaron tener un comportamiento diferenciado, las cuales fueron: socios, apalancamiento externo, tamaño, estatus y sector. Estos resultados ofrecen elementos para constituir un instrumento para el diseño de políticas públicas que mejoren el desempeño de las empresas rurales y urbanas.

The production of bovine meat is paramount in the consumption of protein in Mexico but, despite having grown in recent decades, there is still an unsatisfied market. There are records of several beef business models in the country, among which the following stands out: artisanal meat (cecina). The objective of this research was to analyze the structure and operation of the production and commercialization of cecina in order to determe the economic and social impact that it generates in the municipality of Tepetlixpa, in the State of Mexico. 21 semistructured surveys were applied to businesses dedicated to selling cecina during 2015. Subsequently, the productive chain methodology was used and the interactions of the links that conform it were identified and described: raw material, transformation, marketing and sales. The supply of raw material is basically twofold: local and foreign, mainly from the United States of America; the transformation of the product takes place in more than 90% of the municipality of Yecapixtla, Morelos and, finally, the commercialization and sales of cecina is carried out in the municipality of Tepetlixpa. This activity generates a significant number of direct and indirect jobs, as well as acceptable profit margins (40%). Despite the quality of the product, the activity is in decline due to external factors. This implies that strategies should be designed to allow an increase in related activities. Abstract This study cross-sectionally examines in the elderly population: (a) the association of type 2 diabetes with executive function (EF); (b) the effect of BMI on both type 2 diabetes and EF; (c) the association between glycaemia control and EF in type 2 diabetes. 6823 older individuals with overweight/obesity and metabolic syndrome participating in the PREDIMED-PLUS study, were assessed with a battery of cognitive tests and a medical interview. ANOVA showed a significantly worse performance on EF in type 2 diabetes vs. non-diabetic individuals. Two complementary models were displayed: (1) in the whole sample, the presence of type 2 diabetes, depressive symptoms and BMI had a direct negative effect on EF, while apnoea had an indirect negative effect; (2) in the diabetes subsample, higher illness duration was associated with worse performance in EF. Los code smells son síntomas en el código fuente que pueden revelar problemas de diseño. Para poder solucionar un smell deben aplicarse un conjunto de refactorings que permitan restructurar el sistema. Sin embargo, al aplicar un conjunto de refactorings en un orden determinado, pueden surgir problemas que impiden que éstos se apliquen. Por ejemplo, porque un refactoring que depende de una reestructuración realizada por otro refactoring que aún no fue aplicado, o porque un refactoring referencia un artefacto del sistema que fue modificado por un refactoring aplicado anteriormente. Por estos motivos, para aplicar un conjunto de refactorings, se deben analizar las dependencias que existen entre estos para poder establecer el orden de aplicación. En esta línea, este trabajo presenta una herramienta que identifica y soluciona los conflictos originados por dependencias entre refactorings para luego aplicar automáticamente los mismos. Los resultados, si bien son preliminares, indican que este enfoque permite identificar y solucionar un alto porcentaje de conflictos.

The open source medical passport presented in this study consists of a near-field communication (NFC) tag and an Android application. The app works with structured and normalized data and allows the user to write the tag with relevant medical information, such as health conditions, allergies, recent diseases, blood type, health insurance, medication, as well as other important information including: emergency contact, birth year, nationality, among others. The tag can be read using the app or with another NFC app. The information recorded in the tag can be reliably translated to the reader’s language due to information normalization. The reader of the tag will be a health professional, who will make use of the information recorded by the patient in order to provide a better medical care or act more adequately in emergency situations. The prototype presented includes an offline operation mode, especially envisioned for primary care in remote locations. The whole project has been developed with the support of the UBORA e-infrastructure, a sort of universal “Wikipedia” for open source medical devices, which guides designers through the whole development cycle. All the development information of the medical passport project is made available through such online infrastructure.

El escrito presenta resultados del proyecto La formación docente en los programas licenciatura en educación física y licenciatura en recreación y turismo, a partir de la muestra de algunas investigaciones representativas sobre formación docente en educación física y recreación y turismo. Con estos hallazgos, organizados con la metodología de análisis de contenido, se muestran algunas tendencias de las investigaciones que agrupan los principales rasgos de los estudios, con respecto a categorías construidas en la investigación. Además, se describen perspectivas de la investigación que han sido construidas para comprender tanto el concepto de formación docente como las experiencias que se relacionan con este como hecho dado, usualmente institucionalizado. Las tendencias de las investigaciones en este aspecto se dividen en: 1. Recomendaciones éticas, 2. Comparaciones entre programas, 3. Propuestas de ejes o componentes específicos y 3. Dificultades de la práctica docente. Para finalizar se proponen conclusiones que proyectan necesidades y posibilidades para la investigación sobre el tema. Abstract. The paper presents results of the project La formación docente en los programas licenciatura en educación física y licenciatura en recreación y turismo, from the representative sample of research on teacher training in physical education and recreation and tourism. These findings, organized using the content analysis methodology, shows trends in research by clustering the main traits of the studies considered based on categories built for this research. In addition, research perspectives built to understand both the concept of teacher training and experiences relating to it as a given, usually institutionalized fact, are described. Research trends in this area are divided into: 1. Ethical Recommendations 2. Comparisons between programs, 3. Proposals axes or components and 4. Difficulties of teaching practice. Finally, conclusions are drawn to project needs and possibilities for research on the topic proposed.

We aimed to assess the effects of the antioxidant-rich Mediterranean diet (MedDiet) on white blood cell count. Our study population included participants in the PREvención con DIeta MEDiterránea study (average age 67 years old, 58% women, high cardiovascular risk). We assessed whether a MedDiet intervention enriched in extra-virgin olive oil or nuts, versus a low-fat control diet, modified the incidence of leukocytosis (>11 × 109 leukocytes/L), mild leukopenia (9 leukocytes/L), or severe leukopenia (9 leukocytes/L) in individuals without the condition at baseline (n = 3190, n = 2925, and n = 3190, respectively). We also examined whether MedDiet modified the association between leukocyte count alterations and all-cause mortality. Both MedDiet interventions were associated with a lower risk of developing leukopenia (incidence rates: 5.06% in control diet, 3.29% in MedDiet groups combined; hazard ratio [95% confidence interval]: 0.54 [0.36–0.80]) and severe leukopenia (incidence rates: 1.26% in control diet, 0.46% in MedDiet groups combined; hazard ratio: 0.25 [0.10–0.60]). High cumulative adherence to a MedDiet was linked to lower risk of leukocytosis (incidence rates: 2.08% in quartile 1, 0.65% in quartile 4; HRQ4-Q1: 0.29 [0.085–0.99]) and attenuated the association between leukopenia and all-cause mortality (P-interaction = 0.032). In brief, MedDiet decreased the incidence of white blood cell count-related alterations in high cardiovascular risk individuals.

Thermal spray is one of the most widely used coating techniques to improve wear, surface fatigue or corrosion properties. In the atmospheric plasma spray (APS) process, a powdered material is melted by hydrogen and argon combustion and is propelled at high speed onto the target substrate. The high impact energy of the particles produces a dense and resistant coating layer. Mechanical and surface properties of the obtained coating depend on various spraying parameters, such as gas flow, traverse speed and spraying distance, among others. In this research, the influence of these manufacturing parameters on the thickness, hardness and resistance of the coating obtained from a Ni-Al alloy sprayed onto an aluminum alloy substrate was studied. In order to analyze the effect of these parameters on the coating properties, an extensive experimental program was carried out. A metallographic analysis, hardness and strength measurements were carried out using the small punch test to locally study the mechanical properties of the coating surface. The design of experiments and the response surface methodology facilitate the assessment of the optimal set of spraying parameters.

Our aim was to assess whether long-term adherence to a Mediterranean diet (MedDiet) and leisure-time physical activity (LTPA) were associated with a lower initiation of cardiovascular drug use. We studied the association between cumulative average of MedDiet adherence and LTPA and the risk of cardiovascular drug initiation in older adults at high cardiovascular risk (PREvención con DIeta MEDiterránea trial participants) non-medicated at baseline: glucose-lowering drugs (n = 4437), antihypertensives (n = 2145), statins (n = 3977), fibrates (n = 6391), antiplatelets (n = 5760), vitamin K antagonists (n = 6877), antianginal drugs (n = 6837), and cardiac glycosides (n = 6954). One-point increases in MedDiet adherence were linearly associated with a decreased initiation of glucose-lowering (HR: 0.76 [0.71–0.80]), antihypertensive (HR: 0.79 [0.75–0.82]), statin (HR: 0.82 [0.78–0.85]), fibrate (HR: 0.78 [0.68–0.89]), antiplatelet (HR: 0.79 [0.75–0.83]), vitamin K antagonist (HR: 0.83 [0.74; 0.93]), antianginal (HR: 0.84 [0.74–0.96]), and cardiac glycoside therapy (HR: 0.69 [0.56–0.84]). LTPA was non-linearly related to a delayed initiation of glucose-lowering, antihypertensive, statin, fibrate, antiplatelet, antianginal, and cardiac glycoside therapy (minimum risk: 180–360 metabolic equivalents of task-min/day). Both combined were synergistically associated with a decreased onset of glucose-lowering drugs (p-interaction = 0.04), antihypertensive drugs (p-interaction < 0.001), vitamin K antagonists (p-interaction = 0.04), and cardiac glycosides (p-interaction = 0.01). Summarizing, sustained adherence to a MedDiet and LTPA were associated with lower risk of initiating cardiovascular-related medications.

Metabolic syndrome (MetS) components are strongly associated with increased risk of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) development. Several studies have supported that resveratrol is associated with anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects on health status. The main objective of this study was to assess the putative associations between some urinary resveratrol phase II metabolites, cardiometabolic, and liver markers in individuals diagnosed with MetS. In this cross-sectional study, 266 participants from PREDIMED Plus study (PREvención con DIeta MEDiterránea) were divided into tertiles of total urinary resveratrol phase II metabolites (sum of five resveratrol conjugation metabolites). Urinary resveratrol metabolites were analyzed by ultra- performance liquid chromatography coupled to triple quadrupole mass spectrometry (UPLC-Q-q-Q MS), followed by micro-solid phase extraction (µ-SPE) method. Liver function markers were assessed using serum levels of aspartate aminotransferase (AST), alanine aminotransferase (ALT), and gamma-glutamyl transferase (GGT). Moreover, lipid profile was measured by triglycerides, very-low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (VLDL-c), and total cholesterol/high-density lipoprotein ratio (total cholesterol/HDL). Linear regression adjusted models showed that participants with higher total urine resveratrol concentrations exhibited improved lipid and liver markers compared to the lowest tertile. For lipid determinations: log triglycerides (βT3= −0.15, 95% CI; −0.28, −0.02, p-trend = 0.030), VLDL-c, (βT3= −4.21, 95% CI; −7.97, −0.46, p-trend = 0.039), total cholesterol/HDL ratio Moreover, (βT3= −0.35, 95% CI; −0.66, −0.03, p-trend = 0.241). For liver enzymes: log AST (βT3= −0.12, 95% CI; −0.22, −0.02, p-trend = 0.011, and log GGT (βT3= −0.24, 95% CI; −0.42, −0.06, p-trend = 0.002). However, there is no difference found on glucose variables between groups. To investigate the risk of elevated serum liver markers, flexible regression models indicated that total urine resveratrol metabolites were associated with a lower risk of higher ALT (169.2 to 1314.3 nmol/g creatinine), AST (599.9 to 893.8 nmol/g creatinine), and GGT levels (169.2 to 893.8 nmol/g creatinine). These results suggested that higher urinary concentrations of some resveratrol metabolites might be associated with better lipid profile and hepatic serum enzymes. Moreover, urinary resveratrol excreted showed a reduced odds ratio for higher liver enzymes, which are linked to NAFLD.

Electro-fluid-dynamic cooling devices (EFAs) are being recognized due to their enormous advantages for their application in several industrial sectors, their performance benefits from generated ionic winds and their singular features, which make them competitive with conventional fans and heatsinks. Due to the problems in the electronics industry, where traditional refrigeration systems are not effective due to their dimensions, this study analyzes an innovative arrangement based on wire-to-plane fins by direct current (DC) positive corona discharge in atmospheric air for applications. The paper focuses on optimizing the multicriteria geometry of the electrodes. Several parameters are analyzed such as the gap between emitter and ground electrodes, the electrode materials and geometry, the diameter of the high-voltage electrode and the influence of the dielectric barriers located near the corona electrode to improve heat exchange. Experimental validation shows the potential of this arrangement related to weight, volume, non-mobile parts and silence.

Introducción: las taquicardias ventriculares (TV) y complejos ventriculares prematuros (CVP) de los tractos de salida (TS) son arritmias ventriculares más frecuentes que se producen en el corazón estructuralmente sano. El manejo intervencionista con ablación es el tratamiento que en casos seleccionados ha demostrado tener mayor efectividad terapéutica; para optimizar el lugar de ablación sobre el foco de origen se han conformado ayudas complementarias a los estudios de extensión. Objetivo: proponer una herramienta para discriminar tempranamente el origen de las extrasístoles ventriculares provenientes de los tractos de salida a partir del cálculo del valor de la relación deflexión intrinsecoide/QRS medida en extrasístoles ventriculares en V6. Materiales y métodos: se realizó un estudio de corte transversal, en pacientes con diagnóstico de CVP llevados a estudio electrofisiológico más ablación exitosa. Se midió la deflexión intrinsecoide y se relacionó con el tiempo total del QRS en V6. Resultados: a partir de los análisis de los puntos del corte se estableció un valor de la relación deflexión intrisecoide/qrs menor o igual a 0.67 para el ventrículo derecho y mayor o igual a o.68 para el ventrículo izquierdo. El análisis de los datos registró una correcta clasificación de los pacientes en el 80% de los casos. Conclusiones: este estudio propone una herramienta corta y sencilla de aplicar, que intenta predecir el origen de estas arritmias a partir de unas mediciones realizadas en un electrocardiograma en que se muestre dicha extrasístole ventricular en V6, en donde es obtener posible origen del foco arritmogénico antes del procedimiento intervencionista.

Background: Porcine Circovirus type 2 (PCV2) infections are distributed worldwide and cause Porcine Circovirus Associated Disease (PCVAD). To minimize the impact of PCV2 infection on swine health and production, different vaccination schemes have been used since 2006. However, the association between vaccination schemes, virus load and disease under field conditions are not completely understood. Therefore, the objective of this study was to compare the effect of two different PCV2 vaccination schemes on the humoral response and PCV2 load in pigs after weaning under field conditions. Methods: Two commercial pig farms (Farm A and B), endemically infected with PCV2, which were using two different PCV2 subunit vaccinations schemes for sow, gilts and piglets, were selected. We designed a longitudinal study and measured IgG levels by ELISA and virus load by quantitative PCR in pigs after weaning. Forty 3-week old piglets were randomly selected at weaning and followed for 20 weeks. IgG levels and virus loads were compared within and between farms and considered statistically different if the non-parametric Wilcoxon-test p value was lower than 0.05. Results: We found that low virus loads were maintained in pigs from both farms regardless of the vaccination scheme used (p>0.05). El presente artículo describe el diseño e implementación de un sistema embebido para personas con discapacidad auditiva leve mediante el uso de un casco sensorial EPOC EMOTIV para el control de un arreglo de micrófonos, mejorando la calidad auditiva y comprensión al estar presente a varias fuente de sonido o personas. El principal objetivo es determinar un dispositivo que mejore la calidad de vida de personas con niveles bajos de sordera haciendo uso de tecnologías de última generación.

En este escrito se expondrán algunos rasgos característicos de la lógica institucional de los frenos y contrapesos en Colombia, a partir de la interacción que se presenta entre los ámbitos representativos y los ámbitos jurisdiccionales del poder Estatal, en razón de la actuación del control judicial de constitucionalidad y de la reforma constitucional en sede legislativa. Se argumentará que la lógica de esa interacción, aunque puede optimizar la acción de controles más o menos efectivos para evitar el decisionismo, lo hace a costa de limitar la eficacia de otros principios también valiosos para el sistema constitucional, como la legitimidad democrática y la colaboración armónica.Con base en ello, se sugerirá que una revisión crítica de algunas de las normas de distribución de competencia entre los órganos del poder público podría arrojar argumentos relevantes para la discusión sobre procedimientos de decisión más democráticos, en clave deliberativa.
