2. Postgraduate Psychology Students' Mental Health and Coping during COVID-19: Lessons Learnt

Abstract: The transition in learning trajectories, academic pressures and stressors associated with financial and societal pressure that South African postgraduate university students experience places them at risk of mental health difficulties. For these students, their mental well-being has been further threatened due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the subsequent switch to emergency remote teaching. This study aimed to explore the physical and psychological health, resilience and coping amongst two Psychology honours student cohorts at a South African university. Using a repeated cross-sectional design, a sample of 38 Psychology honours students enrolled in 2020 and 39 Psychology honours students enrolled in 2021 voluntarily participated in the study. Overall, students reported poor mental health, with elevated levels of anxiety and burnout and moderate post-traumatic stress symptoms. The 2021 cohort reported significantly lower levels of self-efficacy, increased post-traumatic stress symptoms and employed coping through self-blame more frequently. Students' feelings of isolation persisted as well as feelings of hopelessness with regard to the contextual challenges faced by the country and the pandemic. Over the course of the pandemic, students found that they had less anxiety about online learning, however, they noted that the mental health support provided by the university was not sufficient. These results highlight the important role university mental health services play in fostering student mental well-being and thus the need to prioritise making mental health services to students more accessible and efficient.

3. Intersectoral Interventions in School to Develop Strategies to Prevent the Use of Alcohol and Other Drugs: A Scoping Review

Abstract: It is important to prioritize intersectoral action at schools to prevent the use of alcohol and other drugs. This strategic act should be organized with multidisciplinary learning characteristics and with the involvement of different stakeholders. The aim of a recent scoping review was to identify the factors that benefit and hinder intersectoral actions at school resulting from the elaboration of policies to prevent drug use. It seems like the research study was a scoping review that used the P-population, C-context, and C-concept structure. The study searched for information in various databases like Embase, Proquest, Lilacs, Medline via Pubmed, PsycInfo, WHO-Iris, and PAHO-Iris on April 17, 2023. According to the results, there were 5 studies that were eligible to answer the research question. One of the advantages of intersectoral actions is the role of schools in creating a support network with different social actors, particularly with family involvement. On the other hand, one of the challenges is inconsistencies in legal regulations, which do not provide enough guidance to schools on how to prevent alcohol and drug use. While public and private schools may be affected differently by social and economic factors, it is essential to invest in developing policies that focus on drug prevention for children and adolescents who are learning in schools.

4. Analytical solutions for Maxwell-scalar system on radially symmetric spacetimes

Abstract: We investigate Maxwell-scalar models on radially symmetric spacetimes in which the gauge and scalar fields are coupled via the electric permittivity. We find the conditions that allow for the presence of minimum energy configurations. In this formalism, the charge density must be written exclusively in terms of the components of the metric tensor and the scalar field is governed by first-order equations. We also find a manner to map the aforementioned equation into the corresponding one associated to kinks in $(1,1)$ spacetime dimensions, so we get analytical solutions for three specific spacetimes. We then calculate the energy density and show that the energy is finite. The stability of the solutions against contractions and dilations, following Derrick's argument, and around small fluctuations in the fields is also investigated. 5. The young exoplanetary system TOI-4562: Confirming the presence of a third body in the system

Abstract: Young planetary systems represent an opportunity to investigate the early stages of (exo)planetary formation because the gravitational interactions have not yet significantly changed the initial configuration of the system. TOI-4562 b is a highly eccentric temperate Jupiter analogue orbiting a young F7V-type star of $<700$ Myr in age with an orbital period of $P_{orb} \sim 225$ days and an eccentricity of $e=0.76$, and is one of the largest known exoplanets to have formed in situ. We observed a new transit of TOI-4562 b using the 0.6-m Zeiss telescope at the Pico dos Dias Observatory (OPD/LNA) in Minas Gerais, Brazil, and combine our data with Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) and archive data, with the aim being to improve the ephemerides of this interesting system. The $O-C$ diagram for the new ephemeris is consistent with the presence of a giant planet in an outer orbit around TOI-4562. TOI-4562 c is a planet with a mass of $M=5.77 M_{Jup}$, an orbital period of $P_{orb}= 3990$ days, and a semi-major axis of $a = 5.219$ AU. We report the discovery of TOI-4562 c, the exoplanet with the longest orbital period discovered to date via the transit timing variation (TTV) method. The TOI-4562 system is in the process of violent evolution with intense dynamical changes - judging by its young age and high eccentricity - and is therefore a prime target for studies of formation and evolution of planetary systems., Comment: 5 pages and 3 figures (+ appendix). 6. Constructions of well-rounded algebraic lattices over odd prime degree cyclic number fields

Abstract: Algebraic lattices are those obtained from modules in the ring of integers of algebraic number fields through the canonical or twisted embeddings. In turn, well-rounded lattices are those with maximal cardinality of linearly independent vectors in its set of minimal vectors. Both classes of lattices have been applied for signal transmission in some channels, such as wiretap channels. Recently, some advances have been made in the search for well-rounded lattices that can be realized as algebraic lattices. Moreover, some works have been published studying algebraic lattices obtained from modules in cyclic number fields of odd prime degree $p$. 7. SDformerFlow: Spatiotemporal swin spikeformer for event-based optical flow estimation

Abstract: Event cameras generate asynchronous and sparse event streams capturing changes in light intensity. They offer significant advantages over conventional frame-based cameras, such as a higher dynamic range and an extremely faster data rate, making them particularly useful in scenarios involving fast motion or challenging lighting conditions. Spiking neural networks (SNNs) share similar asynchronous and sparse characteristics and are well-suited for processing data from event cameras. Inspired by the potential of transformers and spike-driven transformers (spikeformers) in other computer vision tasks, we propose two solutions for fast and robust optical flow estimation for event cameras: STTFlowNet and SDformerFlow. STTFlowNet adopts a U-shaped artificial neural network (ANN) architecture with spatiotemporal shifted window self-attention (swin) transformer encoders, while SDformerFlow presents its fully spiking counterpart, incorporating swin spikeformer encoders. Furthermore, we present two variants of the spiking version with different neuron models. Our work is the first to make use of spikeformers for dense optical flow estimation. We conduct end-to-end training for all models using supervised learning. Our results yield state-of-the-art performance among SNN-based event optical flow methods on both the DSEC and MVSEC datasets, and show significant reduction in power consumption compared to the equivalent ANNs., Comment: Under Review

8. Analytical short- and long-range kink-like structures in scalar field models with polynomial interactions

Abstract: We investigate a class of scalar field models which engender kink-like solutions in the presence of polynomial potentials that allows for modifications of the tails of the localized configurations. We introduce a parameter in the potential that controls the classical mass associated to its minima. By using the first-order framework developed by Bogomol'nyi, we obtain analytical solutions that become more and more interactive as we increase such parameter. By investigating the limit in which the parameter tends to infinite, the kink solution gets power law tails, and we show that this feature is related to the behavior of the classical mass, which vanishes in the aforementioned limit. We also investigate the stability against small fluctuations, with the results unveiling that, depending on the values of the parameter, the stability potential may support several bound states and also, it may attain a volcano-like profile., Comment: 7 pages, 7 figures

Abstract: Using a sample of 2800 galaxy clusters identified in the Dark Energy Survey across the redshift range $0.20 < z < 0.60$, we characterize the hierarchical assembly of Bright Central Galaxies (BCGs) and the surrounding intracluster light (ICL). To quantify hierarchical formation we use the stellar mass - halo mass (SMHM) relation for the BCG+ICL system and incorporate the magnitude gap (M14), the difference in brightness between the BCG (measured within 30kpc) and 4th brightest cluster member galaxy within 0.5 $R_{200,c}$. The inclusion of M14, which traces BCG hierarchical growth, increases the slope and decreases the intrinsic scatter in the SMHM relation, highlighting that it is a latent variable within the BCG+ICL SMHM relation. Moreover, the correlation with M14 decreases at large radii from the BCG's centre. However, the stellar light within the BCG+ICL transition region (30kpc - 80kpc) most strongly correlates with the dark matter halo mass and has a statistically significant correlation with M14. As the light in the transition region and M14 are independent measurements, the transition region may grow as a result of the BCG's hierarchical two-phase formation. Additionally, as M14 and ICL result from hierarchical growth, we use a stacked sample and find that clusters with large M14 values are characterized by larger ICL and BCG+ICL fractions, which illustrates that the merger processes that build the BCG stellar mass also grow the ICL. 10. Fano-Rashba effect in the presence of Majorana bound states

Abstract: In this paper, we investigate the influence of Majorana bound states on the Fano-Rashba effect in a two-channel Fano-Anderson model. Employing Green's function formalism and the equation of motion method, we compute the transmission through the quantum dot and the density of states. Our analysis reveals that the Majorana bound states, localized at the ends of the topological superconductor nanowire, penetrate into the quantum dot, thereby altering the interference pattern in the electronic transmission profile through it, resulting from their interaction with the bound states in the continuum. Furthermore, we explore the robustness of the bound state in the continuum concerning its connection to Majorana bound states and the energy induced by the magnetic field. 11. Micro and macro facial expressions by driven animations in realistic Virtual Humans

Abstract: Computer Graphics (CG) advancements have allowed the creation of more realistic Virtual Humans (VH) through modern techniques for animating the VH body and face, thereby affecting perception. From traditional methods, including blend shapes, to driven animations using facial and body tracking, these advancements can potentially enhance the perception of comfort and realism in relation to VHs. Previously, Psychology studied facial movements in humans, with some works separating expressions into macro and micro expressions. Also, some previous CG studies have analyzed how macro and micro expressions are perceived, replicating psychology studies in VHs, encompassing studies with realistic and cartoon VHs, and exploring different VH technologies. However, instead of using facial tracking animation methods, these previous studies animated the VHs using blendshapes interpolation. To understand how the facial tracking technique alters the perception of VHs, this paper extends the study to macro and micro expressions, employing two datasets to transfer real facial expressions to VHs and analyze how their expressions are perceived. Our findings suggest that transferring facial expressions from real actors to VHs significantly diminishes the accuracy of emotion perception compared to VH facial animations created by artists.

Abstract: A good edge-labeling (gel for short) of a graph $G$ is a function $\lambda: E(G) \to \mathbb{R}$ such that, for any ordered pair of vertices $(x, y)$ of $G$, there do not exist two distinct increasing paths from $x$ to $y$, where ``increasing'' means that the sequence of labels is non-decreasing. This notion was introduced by Bermond et al. [Theor. Comput. Sci. 2013] motivated by practical applications arising from routing and wavelength assignment problems in optical networks. Prompted by the lack of algorithmic results about the problem of deciding whether an input graph admits a gel, called GEL, we initiate its study from the viewpoint of parameterized complexity. We first introduce the natural version of GEL where one wants to use at most $c$ distinct labels, which we call $c$-GEL, and we prove that it is NP-complete for every $c \geq 2$ on very restricted instances. We then provide several positive results, starting with simple polynomial kernels for GEL and $c$-\GEL parameterized by neighborhood diversity or vertex cover. As one of our main technical contributions, we present an FPT algorithm for GEL parameterized by the size of a modulator to a forest of stars, based on a novel approach via a 2-SAT formulation which we believe to be of independent interest. We also present FPT algorithms based on dynamic programming for $c$-GEL parameterized by treewidth and $c$, and for GEL parameterized by treewidth and the maximum degree. Finally, we answer positively a question of Bermond et al. [Theor. Comput. Abstract: Experiments in Agricultural Sciences often involve the analysis of longitudinal nominal polytomous variables, both in individual and grouped structures. Marginal and mixed-effects models are two common approaches. The distributional assumptions induce specific mean-variance relationships, however, in many instances, the observed variability is greater than assumed by the model. This characterizes overdispersion, whose identification is crucial for choosing an appropriate modeling framework to make inferences reliable. We propose an initial exploration of constructing a longitudinal multinomial dispersion index as a descriptive and diagnostic tool. This index is calculated as the ratio between the observed and assumed variances. The performance of this index was evaluated through a simulation study, employing statistical techniques to assess its initial performance in different scenarios. We identified that as the index approaches one, it is more likely that this corresponds to a high degree of overdispersion. Conversely, values closer to zero indicate a low degree of overdispersion. Abstract: We explain the large variety of star formation laws in terms of one single, simple law that can be inferred from the definition of the star formation rate and basic algebra. The resulting equation, $\SFR = \eff\ \Mcollapsing/\tauff$, although it has been presented elsewhere, is interpreted in terms of clouds undergoing collapse { rather than being turbulence-supported, an idea that different groups have pursued this century}. Under such assumption, one can explain the constancy of $\eff$, the different intra-cloud correlations observed in Milky Way's molecular clouds, as well as the resolved and unresolved extragalactic relationships between SFR and a measurement of the mass in CO, HCN, and CO+HI. We also explain why the slope of the correlation changes when the orbital time $\tauorb$ is considered instead of the free-fall time, and why estimations of the free-fall time from extragalactic observations skew the correlation, providing a false sublinear correlation. We furthermore show that the apparent nearly linear correlation between the star formation rate and the dynamical equilibrium pressure in the midplane of the galaxies, $\PDE$, is just a consequence of $\PDE$ values being dominated by the variation of the column density of molecular gas. All in all, we argue that the star formation law is driven by the collapse of cold, dense gas, which happens to be primarily molecular in the present Universe, and that the role of stellar feedback is just to shut down the star formation process, not to shape the star formation law., Comment: 17 pages, one figure. Abstract: The widespread application of Artificial Intelligence (AI) techniques has significantly influenced the development of new therapeutic agents. These computational methods can be used to design and predict the properties of generated molecules. Multi-target Drug Discovery (MTDD) is an emerging paradigm for discovering drugs against complex disorders that do not respond well to more traditional target-specific treatments, such as central nervous system, immune system, and cardiovascular diseases. Still, there is yet to be an established benchmark suite for assessing the effectiveness of AI tools for designing multi-target compounds. Standardized benchmarks allow for comparing existing techniques and promote rapid research progress. Hence, this work proposes an evaluation framework for molecule generation techniques in MTDD scenarios, considering brain diseases as a case study. Our methodology involves using large language models to select the appropriate molecular targets, gathering and preprocessing the bioassay datasets, training quantitative structure-activity relationship models to predict target modulation, and assessing other essential drug-likeness properties for implementing the benchmarks. Additionally, this work will assess the performance of four deep generative models and evolutionary algorithms over our benchmark suite. 17. A Strategy to Combine 1stGen Transformers and Open LLMs for Automatic Text Classification

Abstract: Transformer models have achieved state-of-the-art results, with Large Language Models (LLMs), an evolution of first-generation transformers (1stTR), being considered the cutting edge in several NLP tasks. However, the literature has yet to conclusively demonstrate that LLMs consistently outperform 1stTRs across all NLP tasks. This study compares three 1stTRs (BERT, RoBERTa, and BART) with two open LLMs (Llama 2 and Bloom) across 11 sentiment analysis datasets. The results indicate that open LLMs may moderately outperform or match 1stTRs in 8 out of 11 datasets but only when fine-tuned. Given this substantial cost for only moderate gains, the practical applicability of these models in cost-sensitive scenarios is questionable. In this context, a confidence-based strategy that seamlessly integrates 1stTRs with open LLMs based on prediction certainty is proposed. High-confidence documents are classified by the more cost-effective 1stTRs, while uncertain cases are handled by LLMs in zero-shot or few-shot modes, at a much lower cost than fine-tuned versions. Abstract: Magnetic fields remain an enigmatic part of the content of galaxy clusters. Faraday rotation and depolarisation of extragalactic radio sources are useful probes, but the limited availability of polarised radio sources necessitates stacking clusters to study average magnetic field profiles and correlation scales. We recently presented a VLA survey of the 124 most massive Planck clusters at low redshift ($z<0.35$), where a clear depolarisation trend with the cluster impact parameter was found. In this study, we combine the depolarisation information with the observed rotation measure (RM) and present an investigation into the average magnetic field properties of the sample, using both background sources and sources embedded in clusters. We observe a significant increase in the RM scatter, $\sigma_\mathrm{RRM}$, closer to the cluster centres. Averaging all 124 clusters, we find a scatter within $R_\mathrm{500}$ of $\sigma_\mathrm{RRM}=209\pm37$ rad m$^{-2}$, with background sources and cluster members showing similar values ($200\pm33$ and $219\pm66$ rad m$^{-2}$, respectively). In the simple assumption of a uniform magnetic field with a single fluctuation scale $\Lambda_c$, this translates to an average magnetic field strength of $2\,(\Lambda_c/10\mathrm{kpc})^{-0.5}\, \mu$G. The profile of $\sigma_\mathrm{RRM}$ as a function of projected radius is inconsistent with a model that has a simple scaling $B \propto n_e^\eta$, with an observed deficit near the centre of clusters possibly caused by the fact that the highest RM sources near the centre of clusters are depolarised. Abstract: First principles real-time time dependent density functional theory (rt-TDDFT) calculations reveal the existence of ballistic photocurrents generated by Coulomb scattering, a form of photocurrent that has not previously been considered as a mechanism for the bulk photovoltaic effect. With monolayer GeS as an example, it is predicted that ballistic currents can exceed shift currents under experimentally accessible conditions. Moreover, these simulations reveal recombination pathways that work to modify shift current magnitudes beyond perturbation theory predictions.

20. Slow waltzing with REEM-C: a physical-social human-robot interaction study of robot-to-human communication

Abstract: Humans often work closely together and relay a wealth of information through physical interaction. Robots, on the other hand, have not yet been developed to work similarly closely with humans, and to effectively convey information when engaging in physical human-robot interaction (pHRI). This currently limits the potential of physical human-robot collaboration to solve real-world problems. This paper investigates the question of how to establish clear and intuitive robot-to-human communication, while ensuring human comfort during pHRI. We approach this question from the perspective of a leader-follower scenario, in which a full-body humanoid robot leads a slow waltz dance by signaling the next steps to a human partner. This is achieved through the development of a whole-body control framework combining admittance and impedance control, which allows for different communication modalities including haptic, visual, and audio signals. Abstract: Results are presented for the measurement of large-scale anisotropies in the arrival directions of ultra-high-energy cosmic rays detected at the Pierre Auger Observatory during 19 years of operation, prior to AugerPrime, the upgrade of the Observatory. The 3D dipole amplitude and direction are reconstructed above $4\,$EeV in four energy bins. Besides the established dipolar anisotropy in right ascension above $8\,$EeV, the Fourier amplitude of the $8$ to $16\,$EeV energy bin is now also above the $5\sigma$ discovery level. No time variation of the dipole moment above $8\,$EeV is found, setting an upper limit to the rate of change of such variations of $0.3\%$ per year at the $95\%$ confidence level. Additionally, the results for the angular power spectrum are shown, demonstrating no other statistically significant multipoles. The results for the equatorial dipole component down to $0.03\,$EeV are presented, using for the first time a data set obtained with a trigger that has been optimized for lower energies. Finally, model predictions are discussed and compared with observations, based on two source emission scenarios obtained in the combined fit of spectrum and composition above $0.6\,$EeV.

22. Broadband mode exchanger based on subwavelength Y-junctions

Abstract: Multimode silicon photonics, leveraging mode-division multiplexing technologies, offers significant potential to increase capacity of large-scale multiprocessing systems for on-chip optical interconnects. These technologies have implications not only for telecom and datacom applications, but also for cutting-edge fields such as quantum and nonlinear photonics. Thus, the development of compact, low-loss and low-crosstalk multimode devices, in particular mode exchangers, is crucial for effective on-chip mode manipulation. This work introduces a novel mode exchanger that exploits the properties of subwavelength grating metamaterials and symmetric Y-junctions, achieving low losses and crosstalk over a broad bandwidth and a compact size of only 6.5 {\mu}m {\times} 2.6 {\mu}m. The integration of SWG nanostructures in our design enables precise control of mode exchange through different propagation constants in the arms and metamaterial, and takes advantage of dispersion engineering to broaden the operating bandwidth. Experimental characterization demonstrates, to the best of our knowledge, the broadest operational bandwidth covering from 1420 nm to 1620 nm, with measured losses as low as 0.5 dB and extinction ratios higher than 10 dB. Enhanced performance is achieved within a 149 nm bandwidth (1471-1620 nm), showing measured losses below 0.4 dB and extinction ratios greater than 18 dB.

23. Video-based Pedestrian and Vehicle Traffic Analysis During Football Games

Abstract: This paper utilizes video analytics to study pedestrian and vehicle traffic behavior, focusing on analyzing traffic patterns during football gamedays. The University of Florida (UF) hosts six to seven home football games on Saturdays during the college football season, attracting significant pedestrian activity. Through video analytics, this study provides valuable insights into the impact of these events on traffic volumes and safety at intersections. Comparing pedestrian and vehicle activities on gamedays versus non-gamedays reveals differing patterns. For example, pedestrian volume substantially increases during gamedays, which is positively correlated with the probability of the away team winning. This correlation is likely because fans of the home team enjoy watching difficult games. Win probabilities as an early predictor of pedestrian volumes at intersections can be a tool to help traffic professionals anticipate traffic management needs. Pedestrian-to-vehicle (P2V) conflicts notably increase on gamedays, particularly a few hours before games start. Addressing this, a "Barnes Dance" movement phase within the intersection is recommended. Law enforcement presence during high-activity gamedays can help ensure pedestrian compliance and enhance safety. In contrast, we identified that vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) conflicts generally do not increase on gamedays and may even decrease due to heightened driver caution.

Abstract: Characterization of the redshift distribution of ensembles of galaxies is pivotal for large scale structure cosmological studies. In this work, we focus on improving the Self-Organizing Map (SOM) methodology for photometric redshift estimation (SOMPZ), specifically in anticipation of the Dark Energy Survey Year 6 (DES Y6) data. This data set, featuring deeper and fainter galaxies than DES Year 3 (DES Y3), demands adapted techniques to ensure accurate recovery of the underlying redshift distribution. We investigate three strategies for enhancing the existing SOM-based approach used in DES Y3: 1) Replacing the Y3 SOM algorithm with one tailored for redshift estimation challenges; 2) Incorporating $\textit{g}$-band flux information to refine redshift estimates (i.e. using $\textit{griz}$ fluxes as opposed to only $\textit{riz}$); 3) Augmenting redshift data for galaxies where available. These methods are applied to DES Y3 data, and results are compared to the Y3 fiducial ones. Our analysis indicates significant improvements with the first two strategies, notably reducing the overlap between redshift bins. By combining strategies 1 and 2, we have successfully managed to reduce redshift bin overlap in DES Y3 by up to 66$\%$. Conversely, the third strategy, involving the addition of redshift data for selected galaxies as an additional feature in the method, yields inferior results and is abandoned. Our findings contribute to the advancement of weak lensing redshift characterization and lay the groundwork for better redshift characterization in DES Year 6 and future stage IV surveys, like the Rubin Observatory.

26. A Novel Two-Step Fine-Tuning Pipeline for Cold-Start Active Learning in Text Classification Tasks

Abstract: This is the first work to investigate the effectiveness of BERT-based contextual embeddings in active learning (AL) tasks on cold-start scenarios, where traditional fine-tuning is infeasible due to the absence of labeled data. Our primary contribution is the proposal of a more robust fine-tuning pipeline - DoTCAL - that diminishes the reliance on labeled data in AL using two steps: (1) fully leveraging unlabeled data through domain adaptation of the embeddings via masked language modeling and (2) further adjusting model weights using labeled data selected by AL. Our evaluation contrasts BERT-based embeddings with other prevalent text representation paradigms, including Bag of Words (BoW), Latent Semantic Indexing (LSI), and FastText, at two critical stages of the AL process: instance selection and classification. Experiments conducted on eight ATC benchmarks with varying AL budgets (number of labeled instances) and number of instances (about 5,000 to 300,000) demonstrate DoTCAL's superior effectiveness, achieving up to a 33% improvement in Macro-F1 while reducing labeling efforts by half compared to the traditional one-step method. We also found that in several tasks, BoW and LSI (due to information aggregation) produce results superior (up to 59% ) to BERT, especially in low-budget scenarios and hard-to-classify tasks, which is quite surprising., Comment: 11 pages, 4 figures, 2 Tables, and 1 algorithm

Abstract: Cosmological analyses with Type Ia Supernovae (SNe Ia) have traditionally been reliant on spectroscopy for both classifying the type of supernova and obtaining reliable redshifts to measure the distance-redshift relation. While obtaining a host-galaxy spectroscopic redshift for most SNe is feasible for small-area transient surveys, it will be too resource intensive for upcoming large-area surveys such as the Vera Rubin Observatory Legacy Survey of Space and Time, which will observe on the order of millions of SNe. Here we use data from the Dark Energy Survey (DES) to address this problem with photometric redshifts (photo-z) inferred directly from the SN light-curve in combination with Gaussian and full p(z) priors from host-galaxy photo-z estimates. Using the DES 5-year photometrically-classified SN sample, we consider several photo-z algorithms as host-galaxy photo-z priors, including the Self-Organizing Map redshifts (SOMPZ), Bayesian Photometric Redshifts (BPZ), and Directional-Neighbourhood Fitting (DNF) redshift estimates employed in the DES 3x2 point analyses. With detailed catalog-level simulations of the DES 5-year sample, we find that the simulated w can be recovered within $\pm$0.02 when using SN+SOMPZ or DNF prior photo-z, smaller than the average statistical uncertainty for these samples of 0.03. With data, we obtain biases in w consistent with simulations within ~1$\sigma$ for three of the five photo-z variants. We further evaluate how photo-z systematics interplay with photometric classification and find classification introduces a subdominant systematic component. Abstract: We present extensive photometric and spectroscopic observations of the nearby Type Ia supernova (SN) 2023wrk at a distance of about 40 Mpc. The earliest detection of this SN can be traced back to a few hours after the explosion. Within the first few days the light curve shows a bump feature, while the B - V color is blue and remains nearly constant. The overall spectral evolution is similar to that of an SN 1991T/SN 1999aa-like SN Ia, while the C II $\lambda6580$ absorption line appears to be unusually strong in the first spectrum taken at $t \approx -$15.4 days after the maximum light. This carbon feature disappears quickly in subsequent evolution but it reappears at around the time of peak brightness. The complex evolution of the carbon line and the possible detection of Ni III absorption around 4700 {\AA} and 5300 {\AA} in the earliest spectra indicate macroscopic mixing of fuel and ash. The strong carbon lines is likely related to collision of SN ejecta with unbound carbon, consistent with the predictions of pulsational delayed-detonation or carbon-rich circumstellar-matter interaction models. Among those carbon-rich SNe Ia with strong C II $\lambda6580$ absorption at very early times, the line-strength ratio of C II to Si II and the B-V color evolution are found to exhibit large diversity, which may be attributed to different properties of unbound carbon and outward-mixing $^{56}$Ni., Comment: Accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journal (27 pages, 14 figures, 7 tables)

29. Mapping Inter-City Trade Networks to Maximum Entropy Models using Electronic Invoice Data

Abstract: We analyze the network of transactions among cities based on the electronic invoice database for the municipalities in the Cear\'a state, Brazil. It consists of approximately 3.7 billion records, registered during the period between the years 2016 to 2019. All the transactions are grouped in a unique dataset and represented as an asymmetrical adjacency matrix corresponding to a directed graph with connections weighted by the number of transactions among cities. Due to the large size of Cear\'a state, its unequal distribution of wealth, and spatially heterogeneous population, we initially determine communities of cities based on their mutual intensity of trades and verify to which extent their economic interests reflect a community cohesiveness. For the first task, we use the Infomap algorithm to detect the partition which provides the shortest description length and captures the optimal community structure of the network in terms of its associated flow dynamics. Surprisingly, the partition identified has five modules, whose two-dimensional geographical projections are all simply-connected domains. We proceed with the analysis of traded products by building bipartite structures represented in terms of adjacency matrices between municipalities and products, considering selling and buying. Using the revealed comparative advantage (RCA) concept, we define a non-monetary and binary activity index that can distinguish the RCA of a city in a class of goods or services as evidenced by trade flows. Finally, through the pairwise Maximum Entropy Model, we can associate to the largest communities their corresponding binary Ising-like Hamiltonian models. In an analogy with critical phenomena, our results reveal that each community operates at a "temperature" that is close to the corresponding "critical point", suggesting a high degree of "economic cohesiveness" in its trade network of cities., Comment: 29 pages, 10 figures

Abstract: We show how a potential that is well-defined everywhere on the positive half-line, but diverges to $-\infty$ as $x\rightarrow 0^+$, may still be able to dynamically confine a particle to the (positive) half-line. We shall call this effect quantum bungee jumping: in the familiar quantum tunneling scenario one heading towards a wall is expected to bounce off it but instead passes through, while in the present scenario one jumping off a cliff is expected to fall but instead is pulled back. We discuss a particular example of a potential displaying this property, and study its energy eigenstates and spectrum., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures

Abstract: The determination of the direction of a stellar core collapse via its neutrino emission is crucial for the identification of the progenitor for a multimessenger follow-up. A highly effective method of reconstructing supernova directions within the Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment (DUNE) is introduced. The supernova neutrino pointing resolution is studied by simulating and reconstructing electron-neutrino charged-current absorption on $^{40}$Ar and elastic scattering of neutrinos on electrons. Procedures to reconstruct individual interactions, including a newly developed technique called ``brems flipping'', as well as the burst direction from an ensemble of interactions are described. Performance of the burst direction reconstruction is evaluated for supernovae happening at a distance of 10 kpc for a specific supernova burst flux model. The pointing resolution is found to be 3.4 degrees at 68% coverage for a perfect interaction-channel classification and a fiducial mass of 40 kton, and 6.6 degrees for a 10 kton fiducial mass respectively. Assuming a 4% rate of charged-current interactions being misidentified as elastic scattering, DUNE's burst pointing resolution is found to be 4.3 degrees (8.7 degrees) at 68% coverage., Comment: 25 pages, 16 figures

Abstract: We present results from a search for X-ray/gamma-ray counterparts of gravitational-wave (GW) candidates from the third observing run (O3) of the LIGO-Virgo-KAGRA (LVK) network using the Swift Burst Alert Telescope (Swift-BAT). The search includes 636 GW candidates received in low latency, 86 of which have been confirmed by the offline analysis and included in the third cumulative Gravitational-Wave Transient Catalogs (GWTC-3). Targeted searches were carried out on the entire GW sample using the maximum--likelihood NITRATES pipeline on the BAT data made available via the GUANO infrastructure. We do not detect any significant electromagnetic emission that is temporally and spatially coincident with any of the GW candidates. We report flux upper limits in the 15-350 keV band as a function of sky position for all the catalog candidates. For GW candidates where the Swift-BAT false alarm rate is less than 10$^{-3}$ Hz, we compute the GW--BAT joint false alarm rate. Finally, the derived Swift-BAT upper limits are used to infer constraints on the putative electromagnetic emission associated with binary black hole mergers., Comment: 50 pages, 10 figures, 4 tables

Abstract: Ultra-high-energy cosmic rays are known to be mainly of extragalactic origin, and their propagation is limited by energy losses, so their arrival directions are expected to correlate with the large-scale structure of the local Universe. In this work, we investigate the possible presence of intermediate-scale excesses in the flux of the most energetic cosmic rays from the direction of the supergalactic plane region using events with energies above 20 EeV recorded with the surface detector array of the Pierre Auger Observatory up to 31 December 2022, with a total exposure of 135,000 km^2 sr yr. The strongest indication for an excess that we find, with a post-trial significance of 3.1{\sigma}, is in the Centaurus region, as in our previous reports, and it extends down to lower energies than previously studied. We do not find any strong hints of excesses from any other region of the supergalactic plane at the same angular scale. In particular, our results do not confirm the reports by the Telescope Array collaboration of excesses from two regions in the Northern Hemisphere at the edge of the field of view of the Pierre Auger Observatory. Abstract: Under appropriate positivity hypotheses, we prove quantitative estimates for the total $k$-th order $Q$-curvature functional near minimizing metrics on any smooth, closed $n$-dimensional Riemannian manifold for every integer $1 \leq k < \frac{n}{2}$. More precisely, we show that on a generic closed Riemannian manifold the distance to the minimizing set of metrics is controlled quadratically by the $Q$-curvature energy deficit, extending recent work by Engelstein, Neumayer and Spolaor in the case $k=1$. Next we prove, for any integer $1 \leq k< \frac{n}{2}$, the existence of an $n$-dimensional Riemannian manifold such that the $k$-th order $Q$-curvature deficit controls a higher power of the distance to the minimizing set. Abstract: Synthesized beam (PSF) synthetic observations with and without the antennas in Mexico are analyzed. For a simple continuum observing setup, we generated visibility files and their associated PSF images for a grid of parameters (robust weighting, tapering, and declination). The tests were done for both the MID and MID+Spiral+Core configurations and their cropped versions without antennas in Mexico. We show that the performance of the Array, in terms of the beam properties, is in general significantly better when both the MID array antennas are present in Northern Mexico and observations target southern sources. At a declination of -40 deg, there are increments in the ellipticity of at least ~1.3X and 1.2X for a tapering of 3.0 and 4.0 mas, if the antennas in Mexico are not included. For the parameter space tested, the changes in ellipticity of the MID and MID+Spiral+Core configurations differ by ~10%. Larger tapering values help to reduce the ellipticity for cropped configurations at all declinations, but it will impose more constraints in terms of angular resolution., Comment: 10 pages, 8 figures

Abstract: Abstract: —J. Blunden and T. Boyer In 2023, La Niña conditions that generally prevailed in the eastern Pacific Ocean from mid-2020 into early 2023 gave way to a strong El Niño by October. Atmospheric concentrations of Earth’s major greenhouse gases—carbon dioxide, methane, and nitrous oxide—all increased to record-high levels. The annual global average carbon dioxide concentration in the atmosphere rose to 419.3±0.1 ppm, which is 50% greater than the pre-industrial level. The growth from 2022 to 2023 was 2.8 ppm, the fourth highest in the record since the 1960s. The combined short-term effects of El Niño and the long-term effects of increasing levels of heat-trapping gases in the atmosphere contributed to new records for many essential climate variables reported here. The annual global temperature across land and oceans was the highest in records dating as far back as 1850, with the last seven months (June–December) having each been record warm. Over land, the globally averaged temperature was also record high. Dozens of countries reported record or near-record warmth for the year, including China and continental Europe as a whole (warmest on record), India and Russia (second warmest), and Canada (third warmest). Intense and widespread heatwaves were reported around the world. In Vietnam, an all-time national maximum temperature record of 44.2°C was observed at Tuong Duong on 7 May, surpassing the previous record of 43.4°C at Huong Khe on 20 April 2019. In Brazil, the air temperature reached 44.8°C in Araçuaí in Minas Gerais on 20 November, potentially a new national record and 12.8°C above normal. The effect of rising temperatures was apparent in the cryosphere, where snow cover extent by June 2023 was the smallest in the 56-year record for North America and seventh smallest for the Northern Hemisphere overall. Heatwaves contributed to the greatest average mass balance loss for Alpine glaciers around the world since the start of the record in 1970. Due to rapid volume loss beginning in 2021, St. Anna Glacier in Switzerland and Ice Worm Glacier in the United States disappeared completely. In August, as a direct result of glacial thinning over the past 20 years, a glacial lake on a tributary of the Mendenhall Glacier in Alaska burst through its ice dam and caused unprecedented flooding on Mendenhall River near Juneau. Across the Arctic, the annual surface air temperature was the fourth highest in the 124-year record, and summer (July–September) was record warm. Smaller-than-normal snow cover extent in May and June contributed to the third-highest average peak tundra greenness in the 24-year record. In September, Arctic minimum sea ice extent was the fifth smallest in the 45-year satellite record. The 17 lowest September extents have all occurred in the last 17 years. In Antarctica, temperatures for much of the year were up to 6°C above average over the Weddell Sea and along coastal Dronning Maud Land. The Antarctic Peninsula also experienced well-above-average temperatures during the 2022/23 melt season, which contributed to its fourth consecutive summer of above-average surface melt. On 21 February, Antarctic sea ice extent and sea ice area both reached all-time lows, surpassing records set just a year earlier. Over the course of the year, new daily record-low sea ice extents were set on 278 days. In some instances, these daily records were set by a large margin, for example, the extent on 6 July was 1.8 million km2 lower than the previous record low for that day. Across the global oceans, the annual sea surface temperature was the highest in the 170-year record, far surpassing the previous record of 2016 by 0.13°C. Daily and monthly records were set from March onward, including an historic-high daily global mean sea surface temperature of 18.99°C recorded on 22 August. Approximately 94% of the ocean surface experienced at least one marine heatwave in 2023, while 27% experienced at least one cold spell. Globally averaged ocean heat content from the surface to 2000-m depth was record high in 2023, increasing at a rate equivalent to ∼0.7 Watts per square meter of energy applied over Earth’s surface. Global mean sea level was also record high for the 12th consecutive year, reaching 101.4 mm above the 1993 average when satellite measurements began, an increase of 8.1±1.5 mm over 2022 and the third highest year-over-year increase in the record. A total of 82 named tropical storms were observed during the Northern and Southern Hemispheres’ storm seasons, below the 1991–2020 average of 87. Hurricane Otis became the strongest landfalling hurricane on record for the west coast of Mexico at 140 kt (72 m s−1), causing at least 52 fatalities and $12–16 billion U.S. dollars in damage. Freddy became the world’s longest-lived tropical cyclones on record, developing into a tropical cyclone on 6 February and finally dissipating on 12 March. Freddy crossed the full width of the Indian Ocean and made one landfall in Madagascar and two in Mozambique. In the Mediterranean Sea—outside of traditional tropical cyclone basins—heavy rains and flooding from Storm Daniel killed more than 4300 people and left more than 8000 missing in Libya. The record-warm temperatures in 2023 created conditions that helped intensify the hydrological cycle. Measurements of total-column water vapor in the atmosphere were the highest on record, while the fraction of cloud area in the sky was the lowest since records began in 1980. The annual global mean precipitation total over land surfaces for 2023 was among the lowest since 1979, but global one-day maximum totals were close to average, indicating an increase in rainfall intensity. In July, record-high areas of land across the globe (7.9%) experienced extreme drought, breaking the previous record of 6.2% in July 2022. Overall, 29.7% of land experienced moderate or worse categories of drought during the year, also a record. Mexico reported its driest (and hottest) year since the start of its record in 1950. In alignment with hot and prolonged dry conditions, Canada experienced its worst national wildfire season on record. Approximately 15 million hectares burned across the country, which was more than double the previous record from 1989. Smoke from the fires were transported far into the United States and even to western European countries. August to October 2023 was the driest three-month period in Australia in the 104-year record. Millions of hectares of bushfires burned for weeks in the Northern Territory. In South America, extreme drought developed in the latter half of the year through the Amazon basin. By the end of October, the Rio Negro at Manaus, a major tributary of the Amazon River, fell to its lowest water level since records began in 1902. The transition from La Niña to El Niño helped bring relief to the prolonged drought conditions in equatorial eastern Africa. However, El Niño along with positive Indian Ocean dipole conditions also contributed to excessive rainfall that resulted in devastating floods over southeastern Ethiopia, Somalia, and Kenya during October to December that displaced around 1.5 million people. On 5 September, the town of Zagora, Greece, broke a national record for highest daily rainfall (754 mm in 21 hours, after which the station ceased reporting) due to Storm Daniel; this one-day accumulation was close to Zagora’s normal annual total.

Abstract: The Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI) completed its 5 month Survey Validation in 2021 May. Spectra of stellar and extragalactic targets from Survey Validation constitute the first major data sample from the DESI survey. This paper describes the public release of those spectra, the catalogs of derived properties, and the intermediate data products. In total, the public release includes good-quality spectral information from 466,447 objects targeted as part of the Milky Way Survey, 428,758 as part of the Bright Galaxy Survey, 227,318 as part of the Luminous Red Galaxy sample, 437,664 as part of the Emission Line Galaxy sample, and 76,079 as part of the Quasar sample. In addition, the release includes spectral information from 137,148 objects that expand the scope beyond the primary samples as part of a series of secondary programs. Here, we describe the spectral data, data quality, data products, Large-Scale Structure science catalogs, access to the data, and references that provide relevant background to using these spectra.

40. Nuclear Quantum Effects on the Electronic Structure of Water and Ice.

Abstract: The electronic properties and optical response of ice and water are intricately shaped by their molecular structure, including the quantum mechanical nature of the hydrogen atoms. Despite numerous previous studies, a comprehensive understanding of the nuclear quantum effects (NQEs) on the electronic structure of water and ice at finite temperatures remains elusive. Here, we utilize molecular simulations that harness efficient machine-learning potentials and many-body perturbation theory to assess how NQEs impact the electronic bands of water and hexagonal ice. By comparing path-integral and classical simulations, we find that NQEs lead to a larger renormalization of the fundamental gap of ice, compared to that of water, ultimately yielding similar bandgaps in the two systems, consistent with experimental estimates. Our calculations suggest that the increased quantum mechanical delocalization of protons in ice, relative to water, is a key factor leading to the enhancement of NQEs on the electronic structure of ice.

Abstract: The prevalence and progression of cancer differ in males and females, and thus, sexual dimorphism in tumor development directly impacts clinical research and medicine. Long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) are increasingly recognized as important players in gene expression and various cellular processes, including cancer development and progression. In recent years, lncRNAs have been implicated in the differences observed in cancer incidence, progression, and treatment responses between men and women. Here, we present a brief overview of the current knowledge regarding the role of lncRNAs in cancer sex dimorphism, focusing on how they affect epigenetic processes in male and female mammalian cells. We discuss the potential mechanisms by which lncRNAs may contribute to sex differences in cancer, including transcriptional control of sex chromosomes, hormonal signaling pathways, and immune responses. We also propose strategies for studying lncRNA functions in cancer sex dimorphism. Furthermore, we emphasize the importance of considering sex as a biological variable in cancer research and the need to investigate the role lncRNAs play in mediating these sex differences. In summary, we highlight the emerging link between lncRNAs and cancer sex dimorphism and their potential as therapeutic targets.

Abstract: The rapid increase in aquaculture over the last several decades has led to concerns about the environmental impact of fish feeds relying on marine resources for fishmeal (FM). We aim to assess Nannochloropsis sp. QH25 co-product as a viable and sustainable replacement for FM in juvenile rainbow trout, Oncorhynchus mykiss, feeds. We formulated four experimental diets: a reference (FM based), 33N, 66N, and 100N diet (33%, 66%, and 100% co-product replacement). Rainbow trout were randomly assigned to one of 16 tanks and randomly assigned an experimental diet to consume throughout the experiment (64 days total), with four replicate tanks per diet. We compared the phosphorus (P) and nitrogen (N) digestibility, emissions, and growth between diets and, compared six environmental impacts (biotic resource use (BRU), global warming potential (GWP), water use, land use, marine eutrophication potential (MEP), and freshwater eutrophication potential (FEP)) of each diet. Our results indicate that replacing FM with co-product did not significantly alter growth. P digestibility of the experimental and reference diets was comparable. BRU conversion ratio was significantly lower in the experimental diets. However, there were significantly higher water and land use conversion ratios but insignificantly higher results in GWP, MEP, and FEP between the reference and 100N diet.

43. Time evolution of Von Neumann entropy for a Kerr-Taub-NUT black hole

Abstract: In this work, we study the evolution of an evaporating black hole, described by the Kerr--Taub--NUT metric, which emits scalar particles. We found that allowing the black hole to radiate massless scalar particles increases the angular momentum loss rate while decreasing the loss rate of the NUT parameter and black hole mass. In fact, it means that angular momentum will disappear faster than the other black hole parameters (mass and NUT parameter) during the evaporation process. We also calculate the time evolution of the mass, angular momentum, and NUT parameter in order to get the evolution of the Von Neumann entropy of the black hole. We found that the entropy follows approximately the so-called Page curve, where the $\beta$ parameter, which quantifies the amount of radiation, affects the evaporation process. Implying that high $\beta$ values accelerate the evaporation process of a Kerr--Taub--NUT black hole.

44. Fracture and size effect in mechanical metamaterials

Abstract: We resort to variational methods to evaluate the asymptotic behavior of fine metamaterials as a function of cell size. To zeroth order, the metamaterial behaves as a micropolar continuum with both displacement and rotation degrees of freedom, but exhibits linear-elastic fracture mechanics scaling and therefore no size effect. To higher order, the overall energetics of the metastructure can be characterized explicitly in terms of the solution of the zeroth-order continuum problem by the method of {\Gamma}-expansion. We present explicit expressions of the second-order correction for octet frames. As an application, we evaluate the compliance of double-cantilever octet specimens to second order and use the result to elucidate the dependence of the apparent toughness of the specimen on cell size. The analysis predicts the discreteness of the metamaterial lattice to effectively shield the crack-tip, a mechanism that we term lattice shielding. The theory specifically predicts anti-shielding, i. e., coarser is weaker, in agreement with recent experimental observations.

45. Restricted baby Skyrme-Maxwell theory in a magnetic medium: BPS configurations and some properties

Abstract: We study the existence of BPS configurations in a restricted baby Skyrme-Maxwell enlarged via the inclusion of a nontrivial magnetic permeability. In order to attain such a goal, we use the Bogomol'nyi-Prasad-Sommerfield prescription, which allows us to obtain the lower bound for the energy and the BPS equations whose [electrically neutral] solutions saturate that bound. During the energy minimization procedure, we find a differential constraint which involves the self-dual potential, the superpotential itself and also the magnetic permeability. In order to solve the BPS system, we focus our attention on those solutions with rotational symmetry. For that, we fix the magnetic permeability and select two BPS potentials which exhibit a similar behavior near to the vacuum. We depict the resulting profiles and proceed to an analytical description of the properties of the BPS magnetic field. Furthermore, we consider some essential aspects of our model, such as the conditions for the overall existence of the BPS solutions, and how the permeability affects the magnetic flux. 46. A Census of the Deep Radio Sky with the VLA I: 10GHz Survey of the GOODS-N field

Abstract: We present the first high-resolution, high-frequency radio continuum survey that fully maps an extragalactic deep field: the 10GHz survey of the Great Observatories Origins Deep Survey-North (GOODS-N) field. This is a Large Program of the Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array that allocated 380 hours of observations using the X-band ($8-12$GHz) receivers, leading to a 10GHz mosaic of the GOODS-field with an average rms noise $\sigma_{\rm n}=671\,\rm nJy\,beam^{-1}$ and angular resolution $\theta_{1/2}=0.22$arcsec across 297$\rm arcmin^2$. To maximize the brightness sensitivity we also produce a low-resolution mosaic with $\theta_{1/2}=1.0$arcsec and $\sigma_{\rm n}=968\,\rm nJy\,beam^{-1}$, from which we derive our master catalog containing 256 radio sources detected with peak signal-to-noise ratio $\geq 5$. Radio source size and flux density estimates from the high-resolution mosaic are provided in the master catalog as well. The total fraction of spurious sources in the catalog is 0.75%. Monte Carlo simulations are performed to derive completeness corrections of the catalog. We find that the 10GHz radio source counts in the GOODS-N field agree, in general, with predictions from numerical simulations/models and expectations from 1.4 and 3GHz radio counts., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ

Abstract: We present the joint tomographic analysis of galaxy-galaxy lensing and galaxy clustering in harmonic space, using galaxy catalogues from the first three years of observations by the Dark Energy Survey (DES Y3). We utilise the redMaGiC and MagLim catalogues as lens galaxies and the METACALIBRATION catalogue as source galaxies. The measurements of angular power spectra are performed using the pseudo-$C_\ell$ method, and our theoretical modelling follows the fiducial analyses performed by DES Y3 in configuration space, accounting for galaxy bias, intrinsic alignments, magnification bias, shear magnification bias and photometric redshift uncertainties. We explore different approaches for scale cuts based on non-linear galaxy bias and baryonic effects contamination. Our fiducial covariance matrix is computed analytically, accounting for mask geometry in the Gaussian term, and including non-Gaussian contributions and super-sample covariance terms. To validate our harmonic space pipelines and covariance matrix, we used a suite of 1800 log-normal simulations. We also perform a series of stress tests to gauge the robustness of our harmonic space analysis. In the $\Lambda$CDM model, the clustering amplitude $S_8 =\sigma_8(\Omega_m/0.3)^{0.5}$ is constrained to $S_8 = 0.704\pm 0.029$ and $S_8 = 0.753\pm 0.024$ ($68\%$ C.L.) for the redMaGiC and MagLim catalogues, respectively. For the $w$CDM, the dark energy equation of state is constrained to $w = -1.28 \pm 0.29$ and $w = -1.26^{+0.34}_{-0.27}$, for redMaGiC and MagLim catalogues, respectively. These results are compatible with the corresponding DES Y3 results in configuration space and pave the way for harmonic space analyses using the DES Y6 data., Comment: To be submitted to MNRAS

48. A study of the Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless transition in the XY model in a honeycomb lattice

Abstract: In this study, we examined the Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless (BKT) phase transition in the two-dimensional XY model on a honeycomb lattice. The XY model consists of normalized vectors arranged in a plane and is used to represent two-dimensional magnetic systems. It has applications in areas such as spintronics, superconductivity, and topological quantum computing. To calculate the thermodynamic properties of the system, we used numerical Monte Carlo simulations with the Metropolis algorithm and the Simulated Annealing protocol. The transition temperature was calculated using the second and fourth-order helicity modulus as the order parameter. We also calculated the vortex density and the formation energy of vortex-antivortex pairs. Our findings suggest that the critical temperature is $T_{BKT} = 0.576 \pm 0.001$, and the vortex formation energy is $2\mu=4.0 \pm 0.5$. When compared to the square lattice, both results support the notion of the honeycomb lattice's instability.

Abstract: A significant challenge in measurements of neutrino oscillations is reconstructing the incoming neutrino energies. While modern fully-active tracking calorimeters such as liquid argon time projection chambers in principle allow the measurement of all final state particles above some detection threshold, undetected neutrons remain a considerable source of missing energy with little to no data constraining their production rates and kinematics. We present the first demonstration of tagging neutrino-induced neutrons in liquid argon time projection chambers using secondary protons emitted from neutron-argon interactions in the MicroBooNE detector. We describe the method developed to identify neutrino-induced neutrons and demonstrate its performance using neutrons produced in muon-neutrino charged current interactions. The method is validated using a small subset of MicroBooNE's total dataset. The selection yields a sample with $60\%$ of selected tracks corresponding to neutron-induced secondary protons.

Abstract: We present a deep learning-based method for estimating the neutrino energy of charged-current neutrino-argon interactions. We employ a recurrent neural network (RNN) architecture for neutrino energy estimation in the MicroBooNE experiment, utilizing liquid argon time projection chamber (LArTPC) detector technology. Traditional energy estimation approaches in LArTPCs, which largely rely on reconstructing and summing visible energies, often experience sizable biases and resolution smearing because of the complex nature of neutrino interactions and the detector response. The estimation of neutrino energy can be improved after considering the kinematics information of reconstructed final-state particles. Utilizing kinematic information of reconstructed particles, the deep learning-based approach shows improved resolution and reduced bias for the muon neutrino Monte Carlo simulation sample compared to the traditional approach. In order to address the common concern about the effectiveness of this method on experimental data, the RNN-based energy estimator is further examined and validated with dedicated data-simulation consistency tests using MicroBooNE data. We also assess its potential impact on a neutrino oscillation study after accounting for all statistical and systematic uncertainties and show that it enhances physics sensitivity. This method has good potential to improve the performance of other physics analyses.
