Mandelbrot's empirical observation that the coast of Britain is fractal has been confirmed by many authors, but it can be described by the Schramm--Loewner Evolution? Since the self-affine surface of our planet has a positive Hurst exponent, one would not expect a priori any critical behavior. Here, we investigate numerically the roughness and fractal dimension of the isoheight lines of real and artificial landscapes. Using a novel algorithm to take into account overhangs, we find that the roughness exponent of isoheight lines is consistent with unity regardless of the Hurst exponent of the rough surface. Moreover, the effective fractal dimension of the iso-height lines decays linearly with the Hurst exponent of the surface. We perform several tests to verify if the complete and accessible perimeters would follow the Schramm--Loewner Evolution and find that the left passage probability test is clearly violated, implying that coastlines violate SLE., Comment: 17 pages, 11 figures

We analyze the network of transactions among cities based on the electronic invoice database for the municipalities in the Cear\'a state, Brazil. It consists of approximately 3.7 billion records, registered during the period between the years 2016 to 2019. All the transactions are grouped in a unique dataset and represented as an asymmetrical adjacency matrix corresponding to a directed graph with connections weighted by the number of transactions among cities. Due to the large size of Cear\'a state, its unequal distribution of wealth, and spatially heterogeneous population, we initially determine communities of cities based on their mutual intensity of trades and verify to which extent their economic interests reflect a community cohesiveness. For the first task, we use the Infomap algorithm to detect the partition which provides the shortest description length and captures the optimal community structure of the network in terms of its associated flow dynamics. Surprisingly, the partition identified has five modules, whose two-dimensional geographical projections are all simply-connected domains. We proceed with the analysis of traded products by building bipartite structures represented in terms of adjacency matrices between municipalities and products, considering selling and buying. Using the revealed comparative advantage (RCA) concept, we define a non-monetary and binary activity index that can distinguish the RCA of a city in a class of goods or services as evidenced by trade flows. Finally, through the pairwise Maximum Entropy Model, we can associate to the largest communities their corresponding binary Ising-like Hamiltonian models. In an analogy with critical phenomena, our results reveal that each community operates at a "temperature" that is close to the corresponding "critical point", suggesting a high degree of "economic cohesiveness" in its trade network of cities., Comment: 29 pages, 10 figures

The ongoing debate surrounding the impact of the Internet Research Agency s (IRA) social media campaign during the 2016 U.S. presidential election has largely overshadowed the involvement of other actors. Our analysis brings to light a substantial group of suspended Twitter users, outnumbering the IRA user group by a factor of 60, who align with the ideologies of the IRA campaign. We scrutinize the phenomenology arising from a minimal vaccination-epidemic (MVE) dynamics using three methods: mean-field approach, Monte Carlo simulations, and finite-size scaling analysis. The mean-field formulation reveals that the MVE model exhibits either a continuous or a discontinuous active-to-absorbing phase transition, accompanied by bistability and a tricritical point. However, on square lattices, we detect no signs of bistability, and we disclose that the active-to-absorbing state transition has a scaling invariance and critical exponents compatible with the continuous transition of the directed percolation universality class. Several natural and industrial processes involve the extraction or retention of a solute by a fluid invading a network of channels. Examples include aquifer contamination, chemical filtration, and coffee extraction. We propose a continuum equation to model these processes, parametrized by the P\'eclet number and the rate of mass transfer between the solid and the fluid. We study the time dependence of the extracted mass for different values of the parameter space. The continuum description is validated by combining extraction experiments with coffee and computational fluid dynamics. An analytical solution is derived for the limit of slow mass transfer, which is corroborated by numerical simulations.

We use the configuration model to generate networks having a degree distribution that follows a $q$-exponential, $P_q(k)=(2-q)\lambda[1-(1-q)\lambda k]^{1/(q-1)}$, for arbitrary values of the parameters $q$ and $\lambda$. We study the assortativity and the shortest path of these networks finding that the more the distribution resembles a pure power law, the less well connected are the corresponding nodes. In fact, the average degree of a nearest neighbor grows monotonically with $\lambda^{-1}$. Moreover, our results show that $q$-exponential networks are more robust against random failures and against malicious attacks than standard scale-free networks. Indeed, the critical fraction of removed nodes grows logarithmically with $\lambda^{-1}$ for malicious attacks. An analysis of the $k_s$-core decomposition shows that $q$-exponential networks have a highest $k_s$-core, that is bigger and has a larger $k_s$ than pure scale-free networks. Being at the same time well connected and robust, networks with $q$-exponential degree distribution exhibit scale-free and small-world properties, making them a particularly suitable model for application in several systems., Comment: 6 pages, 8 figures

On a daily commute, the shortest route from home to work rarely overlaps completely the shortest way back. We analyze this asymmetry for several cities and show that it exists even without traffic, due to a non-negligible fraction of one-way streets. For different pairs of origin-destination ($\rm OD$), we compute the log-ratio $r=\ln(\ell_{\rm D}/\ell_{\rm O})$, where $\ell_{\rm O}$ and $\ell_{\rm D}$ are the lengths of the shortest routes from $\rm O$ to $\rm D$ and from $\rm D$ to $\rm O$, respectively. While its average is zero, the amplitude of the fluctuations decays as a power law of the $\rm OD$ shortest path length, $r\sim \ell_{\rm O}^{-\beta}$. Similarly, the fraction of one-way streets in a shortest route also decays as $\ell_{\rm O}^{-\alpha}$. Based on semi-analytic arguments, we show that $\beta=(1+\alpha)/2$. Recent studies revealed an important interplay between the detailed structure of fibration symmetric circuits and the functionality of biological and non-biological networks within which they have be identified. The presence of these circuits in complex networks are directed related to the phenomenon of cluster synchronization, which produces patterns of synchronized group of nodes. Here we present a fast, and memory efficient, algorithm to identify fibration symmetries over information-processing networks. This algorithm is specially suitable for large and sparse networks since it has runtime of complexity $O(M\log N)$ and requires $O(M+N)$ of memory resources, where $N$ and $M$ are the number of nodes and edges in the network, respectively. We propose a modification on the so-called refinement paradigm to identify circuits symmetrical to information flow (i.e., fibers) by finding the coarsest refinement partition over the network. Finally, we show that the presented algorithm provides an optimal procedure for identifying fibers, overcoming the current approaches used in the literature., Comment: 13 pages, 7 figures

We investigate, through a data-driven contact tracing model, the transmission of COVID-19 inside buses during distinct phases of the pandemic in a large Brazilian city. From this microscopic approach, we recover the networks of close contacts within consecutive time windows. A longitudinal comparison is then performed by upscaling the traced contacts with the transmission computed from a mean-field compartmental model for the entire city. Our results show that the effective reproduction numbers inside the buses, $Re^{bus}$, and in the city, $Re^{city}$, followed a compatible behavior during the first wave of the local outbreak. Moreover, by distinguishing the close contacts of healthcare workers in the buses, we discovered that their transmission, $Re^{health}$, during the same period, was systematically higher than $Re^{bus}$. This result reinforces the need for special public transportation policies for highly exposed groups of people.

Magnetic beads attract each other forming chains. We pushed such chains into an inclined Hele-Shaw cell and discovered that they spontaneously form self-similar patterns. Depending on the angle of inclination of the cell, two completely different situations emerge, namely, above the static friction angle the patterns resemble the stacking of a rope and below they look similar to a fortress from above. Moreover, locally the first pattern forms a square lattice, while the second pattern exhibits triangular symmetry. For both patterns, the size distributions of enclosed areas follow power laws. We characterize the morphological transition between the two patterns experimentally and numerically and explain the change in polarization as a competition between friction-induced buckling and gravity., Comment: 5 pages, 6 figures

The spread of COVID-19 caused by the recently discovered SARS-CoV-2 virus has become a worldwide problem with devastating consequences. To slow down the spread of the pandemic, mass quarantines have been implemented globally, provoking further social and economic disruptions. Here, we implement a comprehensive contact tracing network analysis to find an optimized quarantine protocol to dismantle the chain of transmission of coronavirus with minimal disruptions to society. We track billions of anonymized GPS human mobility datapoints from a compilation of hundreds of mobile apps deployed in Latin America to monitor the evolution of the contact network of disease transmission before and after the confinements. As a consequence of the lockdowns, people's mobility across the region decreases by $\sim$53\%, which results in a drastic disintegration of the transmission network by $\sim$90\%. However, this disintegration did not halt the spreading of the disease. Our analysis indicates that superspreading k-core structures persist in the transmission network to prolong the pandemic. Once the k-cores are identified, an optimized strategy to break the chain of transmission is to quarantine a minimal number of 'weak links' with high betweenness centrality connecting the large k-cores. As countries built contact tracing apps to fight the pandemic, our results could turn into a valuable resource to help deploy quarantine protocols with minimized disruptions., Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures

The flow through a porous medium strongly depends on the boundary conditions, very often assumed to be static. Here, we consider changes in the medium due to swelling and erosion and extend existing Lattice-Boltzmann models to include both. We study two boundary conditions: a constant pressure drop and a constant flow rate. For a constant flow rate, the steady state depends solely on the erosion dynamics while for a constant pressure drop it depends also on the timescale of swelling. We show that logic computational circuits in gene regulatory networks arise from a fibration symmetry breaking in the network structure. From this idea we implement a constructive procedure that reveals a hierarchy of genetic circuits, ubiquitous across species, that are surprising analogues to the emblematic circuits of solid-state electronics: starting from the transistor and progressing to ring oscillators, current-mirror circuits to toggle switches and flip-flops. These canonical variants serve fundamental operations of synchronization and clocks (in their symmetric states) and memory storage (in their broken symmetry states). These conclusions introduce a theoretically principled strategy to search for computational building blocks in biological networks, and present a systematic route to design synthetic biological circuits.

After their re-emergence in the last decades, dengue fever and other vector-borne diseases are a potential threat to the lives of millions of people. Based on a data set of dengue cases in the Brazilian city of Fortaleza, collected from 2011 to 2016, we study the spatio-temporal characteristics of dengue outbreaks to characterize epidemic and non-epidemic years. First, we identify regions that show a high prevalence of dengue cases and mosquito larvae in different years and also analyze their corresponding correlations. Our results show that the characteristic correlation length of the epidemic is of the order of the system size, suggesting that factors such as citizen mobility may play a major role as a drive for spatial spreading of vector-borne diseases. Inspired by this observation, we perform a mean-field estimation of the basic reproduction number and find that our estimated values agree well with the values reported for other regions, pointing towards similar underlying spreading mechanisms. These findings provide insights into the spreading characteristics of dengue in densely populated areas and should be of relevance for the design of improved disease containment strategies., Comment: 25 pages, 8 figures

The follow up of Representative behavior after elections is imperative for a democratic Representative system, at the very least to punish betrayal with no re-election. Our goal was to show how to follow Representatives' and how to show behavior in real situations and observe trends in political crises including the onset of game changing political instabilities. We used correlation and correlation distance matrices of Brazilian Representative votes during four presidential terms. Re-ordering these matrices with Minimal Spanning Trees displays the dynamical formation of clusters for the sixteen year period, which includes one Presidential impeachment. The reordered matrices, colored by correlation strength and by the parties clearly show the origin of observed clusters and their evolution over time. When large clusters provide government support cluster breaks, political instability arises, which could lead to an impeachment, a trend we observed three years before the Brazilian President was impeached. Racial residential segregation is interconnected with several other phenomena such as income inequalities, property values inequalities, and racial disparities in health and in education. Furthermore, recent literature suggests the phenomena of gentrification as a cause of perpetuation or increase of racial residential segregation in some American cities. In this paper, we analyze the dynamics of racial residential segregation for white, black, Asian, and Hispanic citizens in New York City in the years of 1990, 2000, and 2010. It was possible to observe that segregation between white and Hispanic citizens, and discrimination between white and Asian ones has grown, while segregation between white and black is quite stable. Furthermore, we analyzed the per capita income and the Gini coefficient in each segregated zone, showing that the highest inequalities occur in the zones where there is overlap of high-density zones of pair of races. Focusing on census tracts that have changed density of population during these twenty years, and, particularly, by analyzing white and black people's segregation, our analysis reveals that a positive flux of white (black) people is associated to a substantial increase (decrease) of the property values, as compared with the city mean. Furthermore, by clustering the region of high density of black citizens, we measured the variation of area and displacement of the four biggest clusters in the period from 1990 to 2010. The large displacements (~ 1.6 Km) observed for two of these clusters, namely, one in the neighborhood of Harlem and the other inside the borough of Brooklyn, led to the emergence of typically gentrified regions., Comment: 19 pages, 12 figures

Drainage basins are essential to Geohydrology and Biodiversity. Defining those regions in a simple, robust and efficient way is a constant challenge in Earth Science. Here, we introduce a model to delineate multiple drainage basins through an extension of the Invasion Percolation-Based Algorithm (IPBA). In order to prove the potential of our approach, we apply it to real and artificial datasets. We observe that the perimeter and area distributions of basins and anti-basins display long tails extending over several orders of magnitude and following approximately power-law behaviors. Moreover, the exponents of these power laws depend on spatial correlations and are invariant under the landscape orientation, not only for terrestrial, but lunar and martian landscapes. The terrestrial and martian results are statistically identical, which suggests that a hypothetical martian river would present similarity to the terrestrial rivers. Finally, we propose a theoretical value for the Hack's exponent based on the fractal dimension of watersheds, $\gamma=D/2$. We measure $\gamma=0.54 \pm 0.01$ for Earth, which is close to our estimation of $\gamma \approx 0.55$. In spite of the considerable progress towards reducing illiteracy rates, many countries, including developed ones, have encountered difficulty achieving further reduction in these rates. This is worrying because illiteracy has been related to numerous health, social, and economic problems. Here, we show that the spatial patterns of illiteracy in urban systems have several features analogous to the spread of diseases such as dengue and obesity. Our results reveal that illiteracy rates are spatially long-range correlated, displaying non-trivial clustering structures characterized by percolation-like transitions and fractality. These patterns can be described in the context of percolation theory of long-range correlated systems at criticality. Sand fences are often erected to reduce wind speed, prevent aeolian soil erosion, and induce sand deposition and dune formation in areas affected by sand encroachment and desertification. However, the search for the most efficient array of fences by means of field experiments alone poses a challenging task given that field experiments are affected by weather conditions. Here we apply Computational Fluid Dynamic simulations to investigate the three-dimensional structure of the turbulent wind field over an array of fences of different sizes, porosity and spacing. Our goal is to perform a quantitative analysis of this structure in the absence of saltation or suspension transport, as first step toward the development of a continuum simulation of the aeolian soil in presence of the fences. We find that the area of soil protected against direct aerodynamic entrainment has two regimes, depending on the spacing $L_x$ between the fences. When $L_x$ is smaller than a critical value $L_{xc}$, the wake zones associated with each fence are inter-connected (regime A), while these wake zones appear separated from each other (regime B) when $L_x$ exceeds this critical value of spacing. The system undergoes a second order phase transition at $L_x = L_{xc}$, with the cross-wind width of the protected zone scaling with $\left[{1-{L}_x}/{L}_{xc}\right]^\beta$ in regime A, with $\beta \approx 0.32$. Our findings have implication for a better understanding of aeolian transport in the presence of sand fences, as well as to develop optimization strategies for measures to protect soils from wind erosion., Comment: 35 pages, 13 figures

We investigate by numerical simulation and finite-size analysis the impact of long-range shortcuts on a spatially embedded transportation network. Our networks are built from two-dimensional ($d=2$) square lattices to be improved by the addition of long-range shortcuts added with probability $P(r_{ij})\sim r_{ij}^{-\alpha}$ [J. M. Kleinberg, Nature 406, 845 (2000)]. Considering those improved networks, we performed numerical simulation of multiple discrete package navigation and found a limit for the amount of packages flowing through the network. Such limit is characterized by a critical probability of creating packages $p_{c}$, where above this value a transition to a congested state occurs. Moreover, $p_{c}$ is found to follow a power-law, $p_{c}\sim L^{-\gamma}$, where $L$ is the network size. Our results indicate the presence of an optimal value of $\alpha_{\rm min}\approx1.7$, where the parameter $\gamma$ reaches its minimum value and the networks are more resilient to congestion for larger system sizes., Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures

We investigate the dynamics of overdamped $D$-dimensional systems of particles repulsively interacting through short-ranged power-law potentials, $V(r)\sim r^{-\lambda}\;(\lambda/D>1)$. We show that such systems obey a non-linear diffusion equation, and that their stationary state extremizes a $q$-generalized nonadditive entropy. Here we focus on the dynamical evolution of these systems. Our first-principle $D=1,2$ many-body numerical simulations (based on Newton's law) confirm the predictions obtained from the time-dependent solution of the non-linear diffusion equation, and show that the one-particle space-distribution $P(x,t)$ appears to follow a compact-support $q$-Gaussian form, with $q=1-\lambda/D$. We also calculate the velocity distributions $P(v_x,t)$ and, interestingly enough, they follow the same $q$-Gaussian form (apparently precisely for $D=1$, and nearly so for $D=2$). The satisfactory match between the continuum description and the molecular dynamics simulations in a more general, time-dependent, framework neatly confirms the idea that the present dissipative systems indeed represent suitable applications of the $q$-generalized thermostatistical theory., Comment: 5 pages, 5 figures

The elastic backbone is the set of all shortest paths. We found a new phase transition at $p_{eb}$ above the classical percolation threshold at which the elastic backbone becomes dense. At this transition in $2d$ its fractal dimension is $1.750\pm 0.003$, and one obtains a novel set of critical exponents $\beta_{eb} = 0.50\pm 0.02$, $\gamma_{eb} = 1.97\pm 0.05$, and $\nu_{eb} = 2.00\pm 0.02$ fulfilling consistent critical scaling laws. Interestingly, however, the hyperscaling relation is violated. Using Binder's cumulant, we determine, with high precision, the critical probabilities $p_{eb}$ for the triangular and tilted square lattice for site and bond percolation. The shape of urban settlements plays a fundamental role in their sustainable planning. Properly defining the boundaries of cities is challenging and remains an open problem in the Science of Cities. Here, we propose a worldwide model to define urban settlements beyond their administrative boundaries through a bottom-up approach that takes into account geographical biases intrinsically associated with most societies around the world, and reflected in their different regional growing dynamics. The generality of the model allows to study the scaling laws of cities at all geographical levels: countries, continents, and the entire world. Our definition of cities is robust and holds to one of the most famous results in Social Sciences: Zipf's law. According to our results, the largest cities in the world are not in line with what was recently reported by the United Nations. For example, we find that the largest city in the world is an agglomeration of several small settlements close to each other, connecting three large settlements: Alexandria, Cairo, and Luxor. Our definition of cities opens the doors to the study of the economy of cities in a systematic way independently of arbitrary definitions that employ administrative boundaries.

The increasing cost of electoral campaigns raises the need for effective campaign planning and a precise understanding of the return of such investment. Interestingly, despite the strong impact of elections on our daily lives, how this investment is translated into votes is still unknown. By performing data analysis and modeling, we show that top candidates spend more money \emph{per vote} than the less successful and poorer candidates, a sublinearity that discloses a diseconomy of scale. We demonstrate that such electoral diseconomy arises from the competition between candidates due to inefficient campaign expenditure. Our approach succeeds in two important tests. First, it reveals that the statistical pattern in the vote distribution of candidates can be explained in terms of the independently conceived, but similarly skewed distribution of money campaign. Second, using a heuristic argument, we are able to predict a turnout percentage for a given election of approximately 63\%. This result is in good agreement with the average turnout rate obtained from real data. We propose a targeted intervention protocol where recovery is restricted to individuals that have the least number of infected neighbours. Our recovery strategy is highly efficient on any kind of network, since epidemic outbreaks are minimal when compared to the baseline scenario of spontaneous recovery. In the case of spatially embedded networks, we find that an epidemic stays strongly spatially confined with a characteristic length scale undergoing a random walk. We demonstrate numerically and analytically that this dynamics leads to an epidemic spot with a flat surface structure and a radius that grows linearly with the spreading rate., Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures

When searching for a target within an image our brain can adopt different strategies, but which one does it choose? This question can be answered by tracking the motion of the eye while it executes the task. Following many individuals performing various search tasks we distinguish between two competing strategies. Motivated by these findings, we introduce a model that captures the interplay of the search strategies and allows us to create artificial eye-tracking trajectories, which could be compared to the experimental ones. Identifying the model parameters allows us to quantify the strategy employed in terms of ensemble averages, characterizing each experimental cohort. In this way we can discern with high sensitivity the relation between the visual landscape and the average strategy, disclosing how small variations in the image induce changes in the strategy.

We show that the definition of the city boundaries can have a dramatic influence on the scaling behavior of the night-time light (NTL) as a function of population (POP) in the US. Precisely, our results show that the arbitrary geopolitical definition based on the Metropolitan/Consolidated Metropolitan Statistical Areas (MSA/CMSA) leads to a sublinear power-law growth of NTL with POP. On the other hand, when cities are defined according to a more natural agglomeration criteria, namely, the City Clustering Algorithm (CCA), an isometric relation emerges between NTL and population. This discrepancy is compatible with results from previous works showing that the scaling behaviors of various urban indicators with population can be substantially different for distinct definitions of city boundaries. Moreover, considering the CCA definition as more adequate than the MSA/CMSA one because the former does not violate the expected extensivity between land population and area of their generated clusters, we conclude that, without loss of generality, the CCA measures of light pollution and population could be interchangeably utilized in future studies.

Sand fences are widely applied to prevent soil erosion by wind in areas affected by desertification. Sand fences also provide a way to reduce the emission rate of dust particles, which is triggered mainly by the impacts of wind-blown sand grains onto the soil and affects the Earth's climate. Many different types of fence have been designed and their effects on the sediment transport dynamics studied since many years. However, the search for the optimal array of fences has remained largely an empirical task. In order to achieve maximal soil protection using the minimal amount of fence material, a quantitative understanding of the flow profile over the relief encompassing the area to be protected including all employed fences is required. Here we use Computational Fluid Dynamics to calculate the average turbulent airflow through an array of fences as a function of the porosity, spacing and height of the fences. Specifically, we investigate the factors controlling the fraction of soil area over which the basal average wind shear velocity drops below the threshold for sand transport when the fences are applied. We introduce a cost function, given by the amount of material necessary to construct the fences. We find that, for typical sand-moving wind velocities, the optimal fence height (which minimizes this cost function) is around $50\,$cm, while using fences of height around $1.25\,$m leads to maximal cost., Comment: 10 pages

We investigate at the subscale of the neighborhoods of a highly populated city the incidence of property crimes in terms of both the resident and the floating population. Our results show that a relevant allometric relation could only be observed between property crimes and floating population. More precisely, the evidence of a superlinear behavior indicates that a disproportional number of property crimes occurs in regions where an increased flow of people takes place in the city. For comparison, we also found that the number of crimes of peace disturbance only correlates well, and in a superlinear fashion too, with the resident population. Our study raises the interesting possibility that the superlinearity observed in previous studies [Bettencourt et al., Proc. Natl. Acad. Sci. USA 104, 7301 (2007) and Melo et al., Sci. Rep. 4, 6239 (2014)] for homicides versus population at the city scale could have its origin in the fact that the floating population, and not the resident one, should be taken as the relevant variable determining the intrinsic microdynamical behavior of the system., Comment: 17 pages, 8 Figures

We investigate a model for fatigue crack growth in which damage accumulation is assumed to follow a power law of the local stress amplitude, a form which can be generically justified on the grounds of the approximately self-similar aspect of microcrack distributions. Our aim is to determine the relation between model ingredients and the Paris exponent governing subcritical crack-growth dynamics at the macroscopic scale, starting from a single small notch propagating along a fixed line. By a series of analytical and numerical calculations, we show that, in the absence of disorder, there is a critical damage-accumulation exponent $\gamma$, namely $\gamma_c=2$, separating two distinct regimes of behavior for the Paris exponent $m$. For $\gamma>\gamma_c$, the Paris exponent is shown to assume the value $m=\gamma$, a result which proves robust against the separate introduction of various modifying ingredients. Explicitly, we deal here with (i) the requirement of a minimum stress for damage to occur; (ii) the presence of disorder in local damage thresholds; (iii) the possibility of crack healing. On the other hand, in the regime $\gamma<\gamma_c$ the Paris exponent is seen to be sensitive to the different ingredients added to the model, with rapid healing or a high minimum stress for damage leading to $m=2$ for all $\gamma<\gamma_c$, in contrast with the linear dependence $m=6-2\gamma$ observed for very long characteristic healing times in the absence of a minimum stress for damage. Upon the introduction of disorder on the local fatigue thresholds, which leads to the possible appearance of multiple cracks along the propagation line, the Paris exponent tends to $m\approx 4$ for $\gamma\lesssim 2$, while retaining the behavior $m=\gamma$ for $\gamma\gtrsim 4$., Comment: To appear in Phys. We investigate analytically the production of entropy during a breathing cycle in healthy and diseased lungs. First, we calculate entropy production in healthy lungs by applying the laws of thermodynamics to the well-known transpulmonary pressure-volume ($P-V$) curves of the lung under the assumption that lung tissue behaves as an entropy spring-like rubber. The bulk modulus, $B$, of the lung is also derived from these calculations. Second, we extend this approach to elastic recoil disorders of the lung such as occur in pulmonary fibrosis and emphysema. These diseases are characterized by particular alterations in the $P-V$ relationship. For example, in fibrotic lungs $B$ increases monotonically with disease progression, while in emphysema the opposite occurs. These diseases can thus be mimicked simply by making appropriate adjustments to the parameters of the $P-V$ curve. Using Clausius's formalism, we show that entropy production, $\Delta S$, is related to the hysteresis area, $\Delta A$, enclosed by the $P-V$ curve during a breathing cycle, namely, $\Delta S=\Delta A/T$, where $T$ is the body temperature. Although $\Delta A$ is highly dependent on the disease, such formula applies to healthy as well as diseased lungs, regardless of the disease stage. Finally, we use {\it ansatzs} to predict analytically the entropy produced by the fibrotic and emphysematous lungs.

We investigate the emergence of extreme opinion trends in society by employing statistical physics modeling and analysis on polls that inquire about a wide range of issues such as religion, economics, politics, abortion, extramarital sex, books, movies, and electoral vote. The surveys lay out a clear indicator of the rise of extreme views. The precursor is a nonlinear relation between the fraction of individuals holding a certain extreme view and the fraction of individuals that includes also moderates, e.g., in politics, those who are "very conservative" versus "moderate to very conservative" ones. We propose an activation model of opinion dynamics with interaction rules based on the existence of individual "stubbornness" that mimics empirical observations. According to our modeling, the onset of nonlinearity can be associated to an abrupt bootstrap-percolation transition with cascades of extreme views through society. Therefore, it represents an early-warning signal to forecast the transition from moderate to extreme views. Networks in nature do not act in isolation but instead exchange information, and depend on each other to function properly. An incipient theory of Networks of Networks have shown that connected random networks may very easily result in abrupt failures. This theoretical finding bares an intrinsic paradox: If natural systems organize in interconnected networks, how can they be so stable? Here we provide a solution to this conundrum, showing that the stability of a system of networks relies on the relation between the internal structure of a network and its pattern of connections to other networks. Specifically, we demonstrate that if network inter-connections are provided by hubs of the network and if there is a moderate degree of convergence of inter-network connection the systems of network are stable and robust to failure. We test this theoretical prediction in two independent experiments of functional brain networks (in task- and resting states) which show that brain networks are connected with a topology that maximizes stability according to the theory., Comment: 40 pages, 7 figures

We investigate the metallic breakdown of a substrate on which highly conducting particles are adsorbed and desorbed with a probability that depends on the local electric field. We find that, by tuning the relative strength $q$ of this dependence, the breakdown can change from continuous to explosive. Precisely, in the limit in which the adsorption probability is the same for any finite voltage drop, we can map our model exactly onto the $q$-state Potts model and thus the transition to a jump occurs at $q=4$. In another limit, where the adsorption probability becomes independent of the local field strength, the traditional bond percolation model is recovered. Our model is thus an example of a possible experimental realization exhibiting a truly discontinuous percolation transition.

A number of predictors have been suggested to detect the most influential spreaders of information in online social media across various domains such as Twitter or Facebook. In particular, degree, PageRank, k-core and other centralities have been adopted to rank the spreading capability of users in information dissemination media. So far, validation of the proposed predictors has been done by simulating the spreading dynamics rather than following real information flow in social networks. Consequently, only model-dependent contradictory results have been achieved so far for the best predictor. Here, we address this issue directly. We search for influential spreaders by following the real spreading dynamics in a wide range of networks. We find that the widely-used degree and PageRank fail in ranking users' influence. We find that the best spreaders are consistently located in the k-core across dissimilar social platforms such as Twitter, Facebook, Livejournal and scientific publishing in the American Physical Society. Furthermore, when the complete global network structure is unavailable, we find that the sum of the nearest neighbors' degree is a reliable local proxy for user's influence. Certain currents in sociology consider society as being composed of autonomous individuals with independent psychologies. Others, however, deem our actions as strongly influenced by the accepted standards of social behavior. The later view was central to the positivist conception of society when in 1887 \'Emile Durkheim published his monograph Suicide (Durkheim, 1897). By treating the suicide as a social fact, Durkheim envisaged that suicide rates should be determined by the connections (or the lack of them) between people and society. Under the same framework, Durkheim considered that crime is bound up with the fundamental conditions of all social life and serves a social function. In this sense, and regardless of its extremely deviant nature, crime events are somehow capable to release certain social tensions and so have a purging effect in society. The social effect on the occurrence of homicides has been previously substantiated (Bettencourt et al., 2007; Alves et al., 2013), and confirmed here, in terms of a superlinear scaling relation: by doubling the population of a Brazilian city results in an average increment of 135 % in the number of homicides, rather than the expected isometric increase of 100 %, as found, for example, for the mortality due to car crashes. Here we present statistical signs of the social influence on the suicide occurrence in cities. Differently from homicides (superlinear) and fatal events in car crashes (isometric), we find sublinear scaling behavior between the number of suicides and city population, with allometric power-law exponents, $\beta = 0.836 \pm 0.009$ and $0.870 \pm 0.002$, for all cities in Brazil and US, respectively. The fact that the frequency of suicides is disproportionately small for larger cities reveals a surprisingly beneficial aspect of living and interacting in larger and more complex social networks., Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures

The small-world property is known to have a profound effect on the navigation efficiency of complex networks [J. M. Kleinberg, Nature 406, 845 (2000)]. Accordingly, the proper addition of shortcuts to a regular substrate can lead to the formation of a highly efficient structure for information propagation. Here we show that enhanced flow properties can also be observed in these complex topologies. Precisely, our model is a network built from an underlying regular lattice over which long-range connections are randomly added according to the probability, $P_{ij}\sim r_{ij}^{-\alpha}$, where $r_{ij}$ is the Manhattan distance between nodes $i$ and $j$, and the exponent $\alpha$ is a controlling parameter. The mean two-point global conductance of the system is computed by considering that each link has a local conductance given by $g_{ij}\propto r_{ij}^{-\delta}$, where $\delta$ determines the extent of the geographical limitations (costs) on the long-range connections. Our results show that the best flow conditions are obtained for $\delta=0$ with $\alpha=0$, while for $\delta \gg 1$ the overall conductance always increases with $\alpha$. For $\delta\approx 1$, $\alpha=d$ becomes the optimal exponent, where $d$ is the topological dimension of the substrate. Interestingly, this exponent is identical to the one obtained for optimal navigation in small-world networks using decentralized algorithms.

Transverse dunes, which form under unidirectional winds and have fixed profile in the direction perpendicular to the wind, occur on all celestial objects of our solar system where dunes have been detected. Here we perform a numerical study of the average turbulent wind flow over a transverse dune by means of computational fluid dynamics simulations. We find that the length of the zone of recirculating flow at the dune lee --- the {\em{separation bubble}} --- displays a surprisingly strong dependence on the wind shear velocity, $u_{\ast}$: it is nearly independent of $u_{\ast}$ for shear velocities within the range between $0.2\,$m$$s and $0.8\,$m$$s but increases linearly with $u_{\ast}$ for larger shear velocities. Our calculations show that transport in the direction opposite to dune migration within the separation bubble can be sustained if $u_{\ast}$ is larger than approximately $0.39\,$m$$s, whereas a larger value of $u_{\ast}$ (about $0.49\,$m$$s) is required to initiate this reverse transport., Comment: 11 pages, 8 figures

We study a subset of the movie collaboration network, imdb.com, where only adult movies are included. We show that there are many benefits in using such a network, which can serve as a prototype for studying social interactions. We find that the strength of links, i.e., how many times two actors have collaborated with each other, is an important factor that can significantly influence the network topology. We see that when we link all actors in the same movie with each other, the network becomes small-world, lacking a proper modular structure. On the other hand, by imposing a threshold on the minimum number of links two actors should have to be in our studied subset, the network topology becomes naturally fractal. This occurs due to a large number of meaningless links, namely, links connecting actors that did not actually interact. The probability distribution of number of ties of an individual in a social network follows a scale-free power-law. However, how this distribution arises has not been conclusively demonstrated in direct analyses of people's actions in social networks. Here, we perform a causal inference analysis and find an underlying cause for this phenomenon. Our analysis indicates that heavy-tailed degree distribution is causally determined by similarly skewed distribution of human activity. Specifically, the degree of an individual is entirely random - following a "maximum entropy attachment" model - except for its mean value which depends deterministically on the volume of the users' activity. We obtain the Paris law of fatigue crack propagation in a disordered solid using a fuse network model where the accumulated damage in each resistor increases with time as a power law of the local current amplitude. When a resistor reaches its fatigue threshold, it burns irreversibly. Over time, this drives cracks to grow until the system is fractured in two parts. We study the relation between the macroscopic exponent of the crack growth rate -- entering the phenomenological Paris law -- and the microscopic damage-accumulation exponent, $\gamma$, under the influence of disorder. The way the jumps of the growing crack, $\Delta a$, and the waiting-time between successive breaks, $\Delta t$, depend on the type of material, via $\gamma$, are also investigated. We find that the averages of these quantities, $<\Delta a>$ and $<\Delta t>/$, scale as power laws of the crack length $a$, $<\Delta a> \propto a^{\alpha}$ and $<\Delta t>/ \propto a^{-\beta}$, where $$ is the average rupture time. Strikingly, our results show, for small values of $\gamma$, a decrease in the exponent of the Paris law in comparison with the homogeneous case, leading to an increase in the lifetime of breaking materials. For the particular case of $\gamma=0$, when fatigue is exclusively ruled by disorder, an analytical treatment confirms the results obtained by simulation.

The self-similarity of complex networks is typically investigated through computational algorithms the primary task of which is to cover the structure with a minimal number of boxes. Here we introduce a box-covering algorithm that not only outperforms previous ones, but also finds optimal solutions. For the two benchmark cases tested, namely, the E. Coli and the WWW networks, our results show that the improvement can be rather substantial, reaching up to 15% in the case of the WWW network., Comment: 5 pages, 6 figures

Sand-moving winds blowing from a constant direction in an area of high sand availability form transverse dunes, which have a fixed profile in the direction orthogonal to the wind. Here we show, by means of a linear stability analysis, that transverse dunes are intrinsically unstable. Any along-axis perturbation on a transverse dune amplify in the course of dune migration due to the combined effect of two main factors, namely: the lateral transport through avalanches along the dune's slip-face, and the scaling of dune migration velocity with the inverse of the dune height. The simplest type of dune is the transverse one, which propagates with invariant profile orthogonally to a fixed wind direction. Here we show numerically and with a linear stability analysis that transverse dunes are unstable with respect to along-axis perturbations in their profile and decay on the bedrock into barchan dunes. Any forcing modulation amplifies exponentially with growth rate determined by the dune turnover time. We present the first systematic algorithm to estimate the maximum packing density of spheres when the grain sizes are drawn from an arbitrary size distribution. With an Apollonian filling rule, we implement our technique for disks in 2d and spheres in 3d. As expected, the densest packing is achieved with power-law size distributions. We also test the method on homogeneous and on empirical real distributions, and we propose a scheme to obtain experimentally accessible distributions of grain sizes with low porosity. Terrorist attacks on transportation networks have traumatized modern societies. With a single blast, it has become possible to paralyze airline traffic, electric power supply, ground transportation or Internet communication. How and at which cost can one restructure the network such that it will become more robust against a malicious attack? We introduce a unique measure for robustness and use it to devise a method to mitigate economically and efficiently this risk. We demonstrate its efficiency on the European electricity system and on the Internet as well as on complex networks models. We show that with small changes in the network structure (low cost) the robustness of diverse networks can be improved dramatically while their functionality remains unchanged. The discrete element method constitutes a general class of modeling techniques to simulate the microscopic behavior (i.e. at the particle scale) of granular/soil materials. We present a contact dynamics method, accounting for the cohesive nature of fine powders and soils. A modification of the model adjusted to capture the essential physical processes underlying the dynamics of generation and collapse of loose systems is able to simulate "quicksand" behavior of a collapsing soil material, in particular of a specific type, which we call "living quicksand". We investigate the penetration behavior of an object for varying density of the material. We propose a simple generalization of the explosive percolation process [Achlioptas et al., Science 323, 1453 (2009)], and investigate its structural and transport properties. In this model, at each step, a set of q unoccupied bonds is randomly chosen. Each of these bonds is then associated with a weight given by the product of the cluster sizes that they would potentially connect, and only that bond among the q-set which has the smallest weight becomes occupied. Our results indicate that, at criticality, all finite-size scaling exponents for the spanning cluster, the conducting backbone, the cutting bonds, and the global conductance of the system, change continuously and significantly with q. Surprisingly, we also observe that systems with intermediate values of q display the worst conductive performance. This is explained by the strong inhibition of loops in the spanning cluster, resulting in a substantially smaller associated conducting backbone., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures

How often will elections end in landslides? What is the probability for a head-to-head race? Analyzing ballot results from several large countries rather anomalous and yet unexplained distributions have been observed. We identify tactical voting as the driving ingredient for the anomalies and introduce a model to study its effect on plurality elections, characterized by the relative strength of the feedback from polls and the pairwise interaction between individuals in the society. With this model it becomes possible to explain the polarization of votes between two candidates, understand the small margin of victories frequently observed for different elections, and analyze the polls' impact in American, Canadian, and Brazilian ballots.
