5. Effective bowel motion reduction in mouse abdominal MRI using hyoscine butylbromide

Abstract

Purpose: Bowel motion is a significant source of artifacts in mouse abdominal MRI. Fasting and administration of hyoscine butylbromide (BUSC) have been proposed for bowel motion reduction, but with inconsistent results and limited efficacy assessments. Here, we evaluate these regimes for mouse abdominal MRI at high field. Methods: Thirty-two adult C57BL/6J mice were imaged on a 9.4T scanner with a FLASH sequence, acquired over 90 minutes with ~19s temporal resolution. During MRI acquisition, eight mice were injected with a low-dose and eight mice with a high-dose bolus of BUSC (0.5 and 5 mg/kg, respectively). Eight mice were food deprived for 4.5-6.5h before MRI and another group of 8 mice was injected with saline during MRI acquisition. Two expert readers reviewed the images and classified bowel motion, and quantitative voxel-wise analyses were performed for identification of moving regions. After defining the most effective protocol, high-resolution T2-weighted and diffusion-weighted images were acquired from four mice. Results: High-dose BUSC was the most effective protocol for bowel motion reduction, for up to 45 minutes. Fasting and saline protocols were not effective in suppressing bowel motion. High-resolution abdominal MRI clearly demonstrated improved image quality and ADC quantification with the high-dose BUSC protocol. Conclusion: Our data show that BUSC administration is advantageous for abdominal MRI in the mouse. Specifically, it endows significant bowel motion reduction, with relatively short onset timings after injection (~8.5 minutes) and relatively long duration of the effect (~45 minutes). 8. Lived Experience of Parents with Technology-Dependent Children: A Phenomenological Study.

Abstract

Caring for technology-dependent children significantly impacts the family unit, a topic that has not been researched in Portugal. Understanding this impact can help nurses to improve their interventions. This study aimed to describe the lived experiences of parents with technology-dependent children using a qualitative descriptive design. We applied Giorgi's approach to analyze 10 individual semi-structured interviews with parents recruited through a children's hospital in Portugal. Our analysis identified two major themes: (1) Discovering a new parenthood: parent and caregiver, comprising two subthemes: Family reorganization and Learning to use a medical device; (2) Reconciling daily life with the needs of the technology-dependent children, comprising two subthemes: Importance of support systems and Experiencing difficulties. These results indicate that parents experience a wide range of concerns and challenges in managing medical devices, starting from the moment the need for a device is communicated and continuing through the process of learning and providing care. This journey involves significant changes in family dynamics and is marked by sacrifice and adaptation, supported by family, formal support systems, and healthcare professionals. Our findings provide valuable insights into the vulnerabilities faced by these parents and highlight how nursing care can enhance the quality of care for these families. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Perovskite solar cells (PSCs) are the most rapidly advancing photovoltaic technology in terms of power conversion efficiency. An efficiency of 26.1% was achieved in a decade, which is on par with the efficiency of very mature silicon panels. However, PSC commercialisation is partly hindered by the difficulty of scaling these devices without efficiency loss, mostly due to the increasing sheet resistance of the transparent conductive layer substrates and the nonuniformity of the layers when deposited across large areas. Therefore, it is crucial for the commercialisation of PSCs to implement easily scalable deposition processes with low material waste and compatibility with roll-to-roll (R2R) processes to reduce manufacturing costs. Slot-die coating can meet all these requirements, allowing for great uniformity over large areas. The most recent developments in PSC upscaling using slot-die coating as the main deposition process, along with its extension to the R2R process, are reviewed, including a thorough discussion of the slot-die coating process and the theory behind its operating limits. In fact, R2R coating is a very promising strategy for PSC industrialisation, since all processing steps use low-cost materials and scalable processes at temperatures lower than 120 °C, allowing the cost-effective and high-throughput production of PSC devices.
