Impairment in linguistic and memory skills is a possible late sequela in cancer survivors that can limit their quality of life and the overall performance of the individual in society. There is evidence that survivors of ALL treated exclusively with chemotherapy demonstrate significant differences in long-term linguistic and memory functions and also changes in neuroanatomical integrity. However, most studies described do not count on a speech-language pathologist in their team, which we consider important to discuss. Thus, the objective of the present study was to assess memory and vocabulary skills in the pediatric population diagnosed with acute lymphoid leukemia during chemotherapy treatment.Materials and Methods: An observational cohort study was conducted over a 1.8-year period. Participants of this research were children diagnosed with ALL. All participants were assessed on their linguistic-cognitive skills (ie, vocabulary, short-term memory and lexical access). All data underwent statistical analyses.Results: The results of the current study found no major significant difference in the linguistic-cognitive performance of children with ALL and their healthy controls. Regarding the linguistic variables, we believe that there should be a differentiation between the effects of the drugs and the effects of social communication skills on performance.Conclusion: This first characterization of the linguistic-cognitive abilities of children with ALL did not identify differences between these children and their healthy peers, although we were able to identify variables regarding the multidisciplinary team and social communication that should be considered in future studies.Keywords: interdisciplinary research, leukemia, children, language

Sebaceous adenoma (SA) is a rare solitary tumour with a predilection for the forehead and scalp. In the English literature, less than 10 cases of SA have been described in the oral cavity. The objective of this study was to examine the clinicopathologic features and evaluate the expression of epidermal growth factor and its receptor, estrogen receptor and androgen receptor in SA and in its differential diagnoses including sebaceous gland hyperplasia (SGH) and Fordyce's granules (FG). Additionally, we analysed the proliferative potential of sebaceous cells from SA, SGH and FG by measuring proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA) expression and quantification of argyrophilic nuclear organizer regions (AgNORs). The SA showed many clinicopathologic similarities to cases previously reported including the biphasic population of cells, in the periphery of lobules undifferentiated basaloid cells whereas the central area was formed by mature sebocytes. SA was composed of 198 lobules of sebaceous cells, whereas SGH and FG showed a mean of 21 ± 7.81 and 5.84 ± 2.83, respectively. The AgNOR and PCNA indices were similar in SA, SGH and FG. These data suggest that lobule counts may be used as additional criteria in distinguishing SA of the oral cavity from other intraoral sebaceous gland lesions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar os efeitos da aplicação de lodo de esgoto nas propriedades químicas de um Argissolo Vermelho-Amarelo, e na produção de matéria seca e acúmulo de nutrientes em plantas de milho. O experimento foi realizado em casa de vegetação, em delineamento inteiramente casualizado e os tratamentos foram dispostos em fatorial 6x2x2, com quatro repetições. Ao solo (3 kg), contido em vasos, adicionaram-se doses de lodo equivalentes a 0, 10, 20, 30, 40 e 50 Mg ha-1 (base seca). Após incubação por 30 dias, retiraram-se amostras de solo para análise, realizaram-se complementações minerais com P (0 e 100 mg kg-1) e K (0 e 100 mg kg-1) e cultivaram-se cinco plantas por vaso durante 50 dias. A aplicação de lodo elevou os teores de MO, P, K, Ca, Mg, SO4(2-), Al e H+Al do solo e diminuiu o pH. O acúmulo de macronutrientes e a produção de matéria seca do milho aumentaram com a aplicação de lodo de esgoto e foram incrementados pela adição de K, não sofrendo efeito da aplicação de fósforo.

Os processos de gelatinização e de extrusão de amido de milho foram estudados. Calorimetria diferencial de varredura e miscroscopia óptica foram utilizadas na determinação da temperatura de gelatinização, T(G), em função do grau de umidade. Misturado a plastificantes, o amido foi processado em extrusoras mono- e dupla-rosca para obtenção de termoplásticos. As propriedades mecânicas dos filmes obtidos por processamento em extrusora dupla-rosca foram investigadas. A análise termo-dinâmico-mecânica do filme de amido termoplástico com 33% (p/p) de plastificantes revela a presença de duas transições distintas, atribuídas às transições das duas macromoléculas constituintes do amido.

Colorectal cancer (CRC) is one of the top 10 most common cancers worldwide and caused approximately 10 million deaths in 2022. CRC mortality has increased by 10% since 2020 and 52.000 deaths will occur in 2024, highlighting the limitations of current treatments due to ineffectiveness, toxicity, or non-adherence. The widely used chemotherapeutic agent, 5-fluorouracil (5-FU), is associated with several adverse effects, including renal, cardiac, and hepatic toxicity; mucositis; and resistance. Taurine (TAU), an essential β-amino acid with potent antioxidant, antimutagenic, and anti-inflammatory properties, has demonstrated protective effects against tissue toxicity from chemotherapeutic agents like doxorubicin and cisplatin. Taurine deficiency is linked to aging and cancers such as breast and colon cancer. This study hypothesized that TAU may mitigate the adverse effects of 5-fluorouracil (5-FU). Carcinogenesis was chemically induced in rats using 1,2-dimethylhydrazine (DMH). Following five months of cancer progression, taurine (100 mg/kg) was administered orally for 8 days, and colon tissues were analyzed. The results showed 80% of adenocarcinoma (AC) in DMH-induced control animals. Notably, the efficacy of 5-FU showed 70% AC and TAU 50% while, in the 5-FU + TAU group, no adenocarcinoma was observed. No differences were observed in the inflammatory infiltrate or the expression of genes such as K-ras, p53, and Ki-67 among the cancer-induced groups whereas APC/β-catenin expression was increased in the 5FU + TAU-treated group. The mitotic index and dysplasia were increased in the induced 5-FU group and when associated with TAU, the levels returned to normal. These data suggest that 5-FU exhibits a synergic anticancer effect when combined with taurine.

Introduction: Furoxan and benzofuroxan are compounds containing an N-oxide function, known for their diverse pharmacological properties, including antimicrobial and antiinflammatory effects. This study aimed to investigate these activities using an in-house library of N-oxide compounds., Method: Twenty compounds were tested against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, including Cutibacterium acnes (C. acnes), a microorganism implicated in the development of acne vulgaris. One compound, (E)-4-(3-((2-(3-hydroxybenzoyl)hydrazone)methyl)phenoxy)-3- (phenylsulfonyl)-1,2,5-oxadiazol-2-N-oxide (compound 15), exhibited selective antimicrobial activity against C. acnes, with a Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) value of 2 μg/mL. Indirect measurement of Nitric Oxide (NO) release showed that compound 15 and isosorbide dinitrate, when treated with L-cysteine, produced nitrite levels of 20.1% and 9.95%, respectively. Using a NO scavenger (PTIO) in combination with compound 15 in a culture of C. acnes resulted in reduced antimicrobial activity, indicating that NO release is part of its mechanism of action. Cytotoxicity assessments using murine macrophages showed cellular viability above 70% at concentrations up to 0.78 μg/mL., Results: Measurements of Interleukin-1 beta (IL1-β) and Tumor Necrosis Factor-alpha (TNF-α) indicated that compound 15 did not reduce the levels of these pro-inflammatory cytokines. Sustained NO production by inducible Nitric Oxide Synthase (iNOS) in macrophages or neutrophils has been found to be involved in the inflammatory process in acne vulgaris and lead to toxicity in surrounding tissues. Nitrite levels in the supernatant of murine macrophages were found to be decreased at a concentration of 0.78 μg/mL of compound 15, indicating an anti-inflammatory effect. In vivo studies were conducted using Balb/c nude mice inoculated subcutaneously with C. acnes. Cream and gel formulations of compound 15 were applied to treat the animals, along with commercially available anti-acne drugs, for 14 days. Animals treated with a cream base containing 5% of compound 15 exhibited less acanthosis with mild inflammatory infiltration compared to other groups, highlighting its anti-inflammatory properties., Conclusion: Similar results were observed in the benzoyl peroxide group, demonstrating that compound 15 presented comparable anti-inflammatory activity to the FDA-approved drug. Background: Hysterectomy is a gynaecological surgical procedure in which the uterus is removed as a treatment for both malignant and benign gynaecological diseases. A hysterectomy is also performed to minimise risks in women with problems related to the uterus. This study aimed to estimate the prevalence of reported hysterectomy and associated risk factors in Brazilian women aged 50 and older., Methods: A cross-sectional study using data from the Brazilian Longitudinal Study of Ageing (ELSI-Brazil) was conducted. A total of 5,293 women aged 50 and over who participated in the ELSI-Brazil study in 2015 and 2016 were included. The prevalence rate of hysterectomy was estimated and the main reasons for performing the surgery were identified. The bivariate analyses utilised the chi-square test, while multivariate analyses employed Poisson regression with a robust estimator., Results: The reported prevalence of hysterectomy was 17.8%. The most prevalent reason for the surgery was the presence of uterine myoma. Significant and independent associations were observed in women aged 63 and older, married, having undergone preventive exams, hormonal treatment, had up to three deliveries and having a private health plan., Conclusion: The main objective of the study was achieved. The prevalence of hysterectomy in Brazilian women aged 50 and older was 17.8%. Significant associations were observed with participants' sociodemographic and clinical characteristics reinforcing the importance of considering the reproductive characteristics of women as indicators of health status., (© 2024. Microorganisms, such as yeasts, filamentous fungi, bacteria, and microalgae, have gained significant attention due to their potential in producing commercially valuable natural carotenoids. In recent years, Phaffia rhodozyma yeasts have emerged as intriguing non-conventional sources of carotenoids, particularly astaxanthin and β-carotene. However, the shift from academic exploration to effective industrial implementation has been challenging to achieve. This study aims to bridge this gap by assessing various scenarios for carotenoid production and recovery. It explores the use of ionic liquids (ILs) and bio-based solvents (ethanol) to ensure safe extraction. The evaluation includes a comprehensive analysis involving Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), biocompatibility assessment, and Techno-Economic Analysis (TEA) of two integrated technologies that utilize choline-based ILs and ethanol (EtOH) for astaxanthin (+β-carotene) recovery from P. rhodozyma cells. Introduction. Candida albicans and Staphylococcus aureus are recognized for their development of resistance and biofilm formation. New therapeutic alternatives are necessary in this context. Hypothesis. Etomidate shows potential application in catheters against mixed biofilms of fluconazole-resistant C. albicans and methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA). Aim. The present study aimed to evaluate the activity of etomidate against mixed biofilms of fluconazole-resistant C. albicans and MRSA. Methodology. The action of etomidate against mature biofilms was verified through the evaluation of biomass and cell viability, and its ability to prevent biofilm formation in peripheral venous catheters was determined based on counts of colony forming units (c.f.u.) and confirmed by morphological analysis through scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Results. Etomidate generated a reduction ( P <0.05) in biomass and cell viability starting from a concentration of 250 µg ml -1 . In addition, it showed significant ability to prevent the formation of mixed biofilms in a peripheral venous catheter, as shown by a reduction in c.f.u. SEM revealed that treatment with etomidate caused substantial damage to the fungal cells. Conclusion. The results showed the potential of etomidate against polymicrobial biofilms of fluconazole-resistant C. albicans and MRSA.

Species of the genus Candida, characterized as commensals of the human microbiota, are opportunistic pathogens capable of generating various types of infections with high associated costs. Considering the limited pharmacological arsenal and the emergence of antifungal-resistant strains, the repositioning of drugs is a strategy used to search for new therapeutic alternatives, in which minocycline and doxycycline have been evaluated as potential candidates. Thus, the objective was to evaluate the in vitro antifungal activity of two tetracyclines, minocycline and doxycycline, and their possible mechanism of action against fluconazole-resistant strains of Candida spp. The sensitivity test for antimicrobials was performed using the broth microdilution technique, and the pharmacological interaction with fluconazole was also analysed using the checkerboard method. To analyse the possible mechanisms of action, flow cytometry assays were performed. The minimum inhibitory concentration obtained was 4-427 µg ml -1 for minocycline and 128-512 µg ml -1 for doxycycline, and mostly indifferent and additive interactions with fluconazole were observed. These tetracyclines were found to promote cellular alterations that generated death by apoptosis, with concentration-dependent reactive oxygen species production and reduced cell viability. Therefore, minocycline and doxycycline present themselves as promising study molecules against Candida spp.

Background and Aims: From a clinical point of view, post-stroke patients present difficulties in swallowing management. The purpose of this research was to identify risk factors that were independently related to the maintenance of a severe restriction of oral intake in patients affected by acute ischemic stroke., Methods: The authors conducted a prospective observational cohort study of patients with dysphagia post-acute ischemic stroke who were admitted to an Emergency Room (ER). Demographic and clinical data were collected at ER admission. Swallowing data was based on The Functional Oral Intake Scale (FOIS) and was collected at two distinct moments: initial swallowing assessment and at the patient outcome. Patients were divided into two groups according to their FOIS level assigned on the last swallowing assessment (at hospital outcome): G1 with severe restriction of oral intake and indication of feeding tube - patients with FOIS levels 1 to 4; G2 without restriction of food consistencies in oral intake - patients with FOIS levels 5 to 7., Results: One hundred and six patients were included in our study. Results of the multivariate logistic regression model for the prediction of maintenance of a severe restriction of oral intake at hospital outcome in patients post-acute ischemic stroke indicated that increasing age (p = 0.006), and dysarthria (p = 0.003) were associated with higher chances of presenting severe restriction of oral intake at hospital outcome., Conclusions: Patients with acute ischemic stroke in an Emergency Room may experience non-resolved severe dysphagia, indicating the need to prepare for the care/rehabilitation of these patients., Competing Interests: Conflicts of interest The authors declare no conflicts of interest., (Copyright © 2023 HCFMUSP. Our aim was to verify the modulative TP-4-ol capacity in 4-nitroquinoline-1-oxide induced oral rat cancer. The stereoisomers of TP-4-ol were used against the human tongue squamous cell line and the negative stereoisomer showed lower IC50. Thirty-one Holtzman rats (120-130 g) were cancer-induced by 4-nitroquinoline-1-oxide (4-NQO/8 weeks/25 ppm) and 32 Holtzman rats (120-130 g) were used to healthy and TP-4-ol toxicity experiments. Six groups were used, healthy, 0.1nL/g of TP-4-ol, 8nL/g of TP-4-ol, 4-NQO, 4-NQO + 0.1nL/g of TP-4-ol, and 4-NQO + 8nL/g of TP-4-ol. We performed the toxicity analysis by biochemical and histopathological analysis. The biochemistry analysis includes alkaline phosphatase (ALP), alanine aminotransferase (ALT), aspartate transaminase (AST), urea, and creatinine and the histopathology analysis includes the liver, kidney, lung, and spleen. Specifically, for malign modulation, we performed a macroscopic and microscopic analysis. The group exposed to 0.1nL/g of TP-4-ol demonstrated a reduced risk of malignancy in dysplasia considering the criteria of architecture and cytology. Similarly, a drop of percentual rats with SCC diagnosis was observed in 4-NQO + 0.1nL/g (41.6%) when compared to 4-NQO (87.5%). Moreover, the 4-NQO group presented a median of 2.62 SCC/rat and the 4-NQO + 0.1nL/g demonstrated a median of 0.75 SCC/rat. For toxicity analysis, 4-NQO + 0.1nL/g showed focal necrosis in the kidney and 4-NQO showed lung hemorrhagic areas. The concentration of 0.1nL/g was more effective in reducing the tongue induction of potentially malignant and malignant lesions by 4-NQO. A kidney toxicity was observed in healthy animals exposed to 0.1nL/g of TP-4-ol. The negative isoform of terpinen-4-ol negatively modulates the development of potentially malignant and malignant lesions in rats (Rattus nonverdicts albinos, Holtzman) exposed to 4-NQO. (-)-Terpinen-4-ol reduced the mice percentual with squamous cell carcinoma, 87.5 to 41.6%, and decreased the cancer/rat ratio of 2.62 in 4-NQO to 0.75 in 4-NQO + 0.1nL/g. Introduction: Candida krusei and Candida albicans are biofilm-forming drug-resistant yeasts that cause bloodstream infections that can lead to death. Materials & methods: nystatin and itraconazole were combined with two synthetic peptides, PepGAT and PepKAA, to evaluate the synergistic effect against Candida biofilms. Additionally, scanning electron and fluorescence microscopies were employed to understand the mechanism behind the synergistic activity. Results: Peptides enhanced the action of drugs to inhibit the biofilm formation of C. krusei and C. albicans and the degradation of mature biofilms of C. krusei . In combination with antifungal drugs, peptides' mechanism of action involved cell wall and membrane damage and overproduction of reactive oxygen species. Additionally, in combination, the peptides reduced the toxicity of drugs to red blood cells. Conclusion: These results reveal that the synthetic peptides enhanced the antibiofilm activity of drugs, in addition to reducing their toxicity. Thus, these peptides have strong potential as adjuvants and to decrease the toxicity of drugs.

Antimicrobial peptides, also known as AMPs, are cationic and amphipathic molecules found in all living organisms, composing part of the defense mechanisms against various pathogens, including fungi, viruses, bacteria, and nematodes. AMPs derived from plants are the focus of this review because they have gained attention as alternative molecules to overcome pathogen resistance as well as new drugs to combat cancer. Plant AMPs are generally classified based on their sequences and structures, as thionins, defensins, hevein-like peptides, knottins, stable-like peptides, lipid transfer proteins, snakins, and cyclotides. Although there are studies reporting the toxicity of plant AMPs to nontarget cells or limitations of oral administration, synthetic AMPs with reduced toxicity or allergenicity, or greater resistance to peptidases can be designed by using different bioinformatics tools. Thus, this review provides information about the classification of plant AMPs, their characteristics, mechanisms of action, hemolytic and cytotoxic potential, possible applications in the medical field, and finally, the use of bioinformatics to help design synthetic AMPs with improved features., (Copyright © 2022 Elsevier B.V. The study aimed to identify patterns in adverse childhood experiences among teenage schoolchildren in a municipality (county) in Rio de Janeiro State, Brazil, according to sociodemographic characteristics (sex, skin color, and socioeconomic status) and depressive symptoms. It adopted a cross-sectional design with a sample of 1,117 teenage schoolchildren 13 to 19 years of age in São Gonçalo, Rio de Janeiro State. Depression was assessed with the Childhood Depression Inventory, and adverse childhood experiences were investigated. The study used bivariate analyses and multiple correspondence analysis (MCA) of adverse childhood experiences, sociodemographic variables (sex, skin color, socioeconomic status), and depressive symptoms. The results reveal the organization of eight groups: lower-income female children and adolescents and adverse childhood experiences related to the environment; boys, with higher socioeconomic status, and not having experienced adverse childhood experiences; adolescents with depressive symptoms and adverse childhood experiences against themselves or their families; white adolescents, with depressive symptoms, and that had not experienced adverse childhood experiences; black, brown, Asian-descendant, and indigenous adolescents that had adverse experiences in the family and community; adolescents that had lost their father and/or mother from death, and lack of food at home; adolescents that had experienced psychological violence; and adolescents with a history of sexual experiences involving their parents. The findings call attention to the need for close and early attention to exposure to adverse childhood experiences to care for these youngsters, intervene, and mitigate the negative effects both at present, over the course of life, and in future generations.

Late in 2019, SARS-CoV-2 (severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2) emerged, causing an unknown type of pneumonia today called coronaviruses disease 2019 (COVID-19). COVID-19 is still an ongoing global outbreak that has claimed and threatened many lives worldwide. Along with the fastest vaccine developed in history to fight SARS-CoV-2 came a critical problem, SARS-CoV-2. These new variants are a result of the accumulation of mutations in the sequence and structure of spike (S) glycoprotein, which is by far the most critical protein for SARS-CoV-2 to recognize cells and escape the immune system, in addition to playing a role in SARS-CoV-2 infection, pathogenicity, transmission, and evolution. In this review, we discuss mutation of S protein and how these mutations have led to new variants that are usually more transmissible and can thus mitigate the immunity produced by vaccination. Here, analysis of S protein sequences and structures from variants point out the mutations among them, how they emerge, and the behavior of S protein from each variant. This review brings details in an understandable way about how the variants of SARS-CoV-2 are a result of mutations in S protein, making them more transmissible and even more aggressive than their relatives., (Copyright © 2022 Elsevier B.V. Introduction. Candida spp. are commensal fungal pathogens of humans, but when there is an imbalance in the microbiota, or weak host immunity, these yeasts can become pathogenic, generating high medical costs. Gap Statement. With the increase in resistance to conventional antifungals, the development of new therapeutic strategies is necessary. This study evaluated the in vitro antifungal activity of chlorogenic acid against fluconazole-resistant strains of Candida spp. Mechanism of action through flow cytometry and in silico analyses, as well as molecular docking assays with ALS3 and SAP5, important proteins in the pathogenesis of Candida albicans associated with the adhesion process and biofilm formation. Results. The chlorogenic acid showed in vitro antifungal activity against the strains tested, causing reduced cell viability, increased potential for mitochondrial depolarization and production of reactive oxygen species, DNA fragmentation and phosphatidylserine externalization, indicating an apoptotic process. Concerning the analysis through docking, the complexes formed between chlorogenic acid and the targets Thymidylate Kinase , CYP51, 1 Yeast Cytochrome BC1 Complex e Exo -B-(1,3)- glucanase demonstrated more favourable binding energy. In addition, chlorogenic acid presented significant interactions with the ALS3 active site residues of C. albicans, important in the adhesion process and resistance to fluconazole. Regarding molecular docking with SAP5, no significant interactions were found between chlorogenic acid and the active site of the enzyme. Conclusion. We concluded that chlorogenic acid has potential use as an adjuvant in antifungal therapies, due to its anti- Candida activity and ability to interact with important drug targets.

Aim: To evaluate the antifungal activity of gallic acid (GA) against the strains of Candida spp. resistant to fluconazole and to determine its mechanism of action. Materials & methods: Antifungal activity was evaluated using the broth microdilution and flow cytometry techniques. Results: GA presented minimum inhibitory concentrations ranging from 16 to 72 μg/ml, causing alterations of the membrane integrity and mitochondrial transmembrane potential, production of reactive oxygen species and externalization of phosphatidylserine. Conclusion: GA has potential antifungal activity against Candida spp.

Different methods for the assessment of bone quality were evaluated in this study. Sixty alveolar bone areas were investigated. Peri-apical and panoramic radiographs were obtained with an aluminium scale to assess optical density. The Lekholm and Zarb (L&Z) classification was determined through radiographic analysis and the surgeon's tactile perception. A trephine was used to obtain a bone biopsy for assessment by micro-computed tomography (micro-CT) and histomorphometry. Primary stability of the implants was assessed using insertion torque (IT) and the implant stability quotient (ISQ). The optical density on peri-apical radiographs was correlated with IT, ISQ, and micro-CT (BV, BV/BT, Tb.Th, Tb.N, BS/BV, Tb.Pf, and SMI) (rho ≤ 0.471, P ≤ 0.028). Panoramic radiography showed a correlation only with bone surface (BS) and bone surface/volume ratio (BS/TV) (rho ≤ 0.290, P ≤ 0.031). IT showed a correlation with ISQ, histometry, and micro-CT (BV, BS/TV, Tb.Th, Tb.N, BS/BV, Tb.Pf, Tb.Sp, BV/BT) (rho ≤ 0.550, P ≤ 0.022). ISQ did not show any correlation with micro-CT. The L&Z classification showed correlations with the optical density obtained in the peri-apical radiographs, histometry, osteocyte count, IT, and micro-CT (BS/BV, Tb.Sp, Tb.Pf, BV, BS/TV, Tb.Th, Tb.N) (rho ≤ 0.344, P ≤ 0.042). Canine cementless total hip arthroplasty (THA) is a successful technique for the management of hip arthrosis; however, serious potential complications, such as femoral fractures and subsidence of the femoral stem, can occur. To evaluate the effect of two femoral stem designs in reducing subsidence in dogs, twenty-four hips from twenty-one dogs undergoing THA were assessed. The twenty-four arthroplasties were divided into two experimental groups: G1 with a first generation, and G2, which is the second generation, system were used. All the dogs were clinically and radiographically evaluated immediately post-operatively and at 30 (M1) and 120 days post-operatively (M2). Three of ten arthroplasties in the G1 system had subsidence and six of fourteen had subsidence in the G2 system. Both systems are effective for management of hip arthrosis. The varus positions with the sub-optimal filling were not related to the subsidence. Objective: The objective of this study was to investigate the association between survival rate and lymphovascular invasion (LVI) and perineural invasion (PNI) in the tumor invasive front (TIF) of squamous cell carcinoma of the tongue (TSCC)., Study Design: Seventy patients with TSCC were included. The retrospective analysis included demographic, clinical, and histopathologic data. Tissue blocks containing the TIF were stained with anti-α-smooth muscle actin and anti-S100 to detect LVI and PNI, respectively. Overall survival (OS) and disease-specific survival (DSS) were assessed using Pearson's chi-square test, Kaplan-Meier method, and Cox regression., Results: LVI and PNI were detected in 61.4% and 78.6% of the TSCC samples at the TIF, respectively. LVI and PNI were present in 54.3% of the cases and were associated with advanced clinical stage, lymph node resection, metastatic nodes, and lower survival (P < .05). The 5-year OS and DSS rates were 44% and 52%, respectively. Multivariate analysis showed that primary tumors >3.0 cm (hazard ratio = 4.29; P = .004) and a concomitant presence of LVI and PNI at the TIF (hazard ratio = 4.0; P = .012) were independent predictors for worse DSS., Conclusion: LVI and PNI, identified by immunostaining at the TIF, are potential prognostic markers of TSCC., (Copyright © 2021 Elsevier Inc. Male infertility accounts for about 30% of the causes of couple infertility and has become a public health concern. Male infertility may be caused by several factors occurring in isolation or association with several complex syndromes. Despite the importance of semen analysis in the initial investigation of infertility, it has been estimated that 15% of infertile men present normal sperm, a proportion that calls for additional tests to further investigate cases of infertility and accurately determine the factors that alter ejaculate quality. In addition to semen analysis parameters, genetics has been drawing attention. The incorporation of genetic diagnostic methods in the routine practice of andrology laboratories is an important step to further improve assisted reproductive technologies. The present study described the current status of the main methods used in male infertility investigation.

Objectives: This study evaluated the bone quality of the maxilla and mandible by using the classification proposed by Lekholm and Zarb (L & Z) and histomorphometry., Methods: Sixty edentulous areas were evaluated. The classification by L & Z was obtained through the evaluation of periapical and panoramic radiographs associated with the surgeon's tactile perception during milling and implant installation. Before implant installation, bone biopsies of standardized sizes were performed for histological evaluation., Results: Type III bone quality was more frequent in the posterior (73.33%) and anterior (73.33%) maxilla, whereas type II bone quality was more frequent in the posterior (53.33%) and anterior (60.00%) mandible. Through histometry, statistical difference was observed for the amount of bone tissue of the posterior region of the maxilla in relation to the anterior and posterior regions of the mandible (P ≤ 0.043). However, there was no difference in osteocyte counts between alveolar regions (P = 0.2946). In the female gender, the age showed a low positive correlation with the L & Z classification (rho = 0.398; P = 0.006) and in the male gender, a moderate negative correlation was observed (rho = -0.650, P = 0.016)., Conclusions: Both methods detected differences in the bone quality of the alveolar regions of the maxilla/mandible and that the classification by L & Z is a reliable method, since it was consistent with histomorphometry, considered the "gold standard" method for the evaluation of bone quality and greater bone density was observed in older men., Competing Interests: The authors report no conflicts of interest., (Copyright © 2021 by Mutaz B. Background: Numerous studies have shown that the external nasal dilator (END) increases the cross sectional area of the nasal valve, thereby reducing nasal resistance, transnasal inspiratory pressure, stabilizing the lateral nasal vestibule, and preventing its collapse during final inhalation., Objectives: Our objective was to carry out a systematic review of the literature and meta-analysis on the effects of the END during physical exercise., Methods: After selecting articles in the PubMed, Cochrane Library and EMBASE databases, 624 studies were identified. However, after applying the inclusion and exclusion criteria, 19 articles were considered eligible for review., Results: Those studies included in the meta-analysis, the maximal oxygen uptake (VO 2 max.) outcome was assessed in 168 participants in which no statistically significant difference was found, MD (95% CI) = 0.86 [- 0.43, 2.15], p = 0.19, and I 2  = 0%. The heart rate (HR) outcome was assessed in 138 participants in which no statistically significant difference was found, MD (95% CI) = 0.02 [- 3.19, 3.22], p = 0.99, and I 2  = 0%. The rating of perceived exertion (RPE) outcome was assessed in 92 participants in which no statistically significant difference was found, MD (95% CI) =  - 0.12 [- 0.52, 0.28], p = 0.56, and I 2  = 27%., Conclusions: The external nasal dilator strip showed no improvement in VO 2 max., HR and RPE outcomes in healthy individuals during exercise.

In the context of the circular bioeconomy and cleaner production, the incorporation of the by-products of plant biomass production in the bioenergy chain is fundamental. However, lignocellulosic wastes have properties that hinder their use for the production of biofuels. This study aims to evaluate how blends of lignocellulosic wastes improve the physical, chemical, and mechanical quality of pellets destined to the industrial sector, and to identify the challenges associated with the use of agroforestry biomass as raw material for pelletizing. Pellets were produced from blends of soybean wastes, sorghum wastes, pine needles, rice powder, Eucalyptus sawdust, and charcoal fines. Additionally, pure pellets composed of soybean wastes, sugarcane bagasse, and pine wood were evaluated. The effect of biomass type on the energy density, ash content, net heating value, and ultimate analysis was significant. The pellets produced with soybean wastes presented high contents of N (3.5-4.9%) and ashes (16.4-26.7%), besides low mechanical durability (≤ 96%), hindering its commercialization for industrial purposes. Pellets with sugarcane bagasse presented N (1.5%), S (0.03%), ashes (5.6%), mechanical durability (96.6%), and net heating value (15.1 MJ kg -1 ), suitable for industrial energy use in accordance with ISO 17225-6. The high N and ash contents and the low mechanical durability are the greatest challenges for the energy use of pellets produced from Brazilian agroforestry wastes.

Objective: To quantify the benefits of a functional oral rehabilitation program for impairment caused by full thickness orofacial and neck burns, comparing the effects of early and late intervention., Methods: An observational cross-sectional study was conducted in a burn reference center over a two-year period. Patients with full thickness orofacial and neck burns were divided in two groups: Group 1 was composed by 14 patients who began the rehabilitation program 3-12 months after the burn injury; Group 2 was composed by 15 patients who began the rehabilitation program more than 12 months after the burn injury. Treatment was based on current strategies of non-surgical exercises for orofacial contracture management. Outcome measurements included an oral motor clinical evaluation and the assessment of the mandibular range of movement., Results: The functional rehabilitation program was effective in reestablishing the oral motor functions (i.e deficits reduced to approximately 15% when compared to the optimal possible scores) and in restoring horizontal mouth opening dimensions, with more than 70% of the patients presenting measurements within the expected normal limits at the end of treatment. Our results did not indicate differences in performance between the group of patients in neither set of assessments, i.e. pre and post treatment (p > 0.05)., Conclusion: The results of this study indicate that non-invasive orofacial contracture management is effective for patients with orofacial and neck burns, including those with long term sequelae., (Copyright © 2020 Elsevier Ltd and ISBI. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of aqueous extract of Paullinia cupana (AEG) against ketoprofen side effects, through biochemical, hematological, and histological parameters. AEG showed antioxidant activity in the DPPH • scavenging (IC 50  = 17.00 ± 1.00 µg/ml) and HPLC analysis revealed that this extract is constituted by antioxidants (caffeine, catechins, theobromine, and polyphenols). In vivo experiments in female Wistar rats demonstrated that alterations in urea, creatinine, and uric acid levels promoted (p < .05) by ketoprofen were reversed when AEG was co-administered. Ketoprofen significantly decreased the catalase levels of animal tissues (p < .05), which were restored when AEG was co-administered with the mentioned drug. Histological analysis showed that AEG protected tissues from damages caused by ketoprofen. Moreover, AEG reestablished the number of white blood cells, which had decreased when ketoprofen was administered. In conclusion, this study suggested that the association between ketoprofen and AEG may be an alternative to reduce health damages caused by this drug. PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS: Paullinia cupana, popularly known as guaraná, is commonly consumed as a beverage in Brazil and exhibits pharmacological and beneficial effects to humans. Ketoprofen is an efficacious drug employed in the treatment of inflammatory processes. However, this drug can cause several side effects in humans. Background & Objectives: Dengue is one of the most important arboviruses and public health problem associated with increasingly large outbreaks, especially in tropical countries such as Brazil. The state of Minas Gerais, in particular, has had high numbers of cases of this infection in recent years., Methods: Our study evaluated the epidemiological impact of dengue fever in the state of Minas Gerais from the National Health System (Sistema Único de Saúde, SUS) perspective between 2000 to 2015 using the Brazilian Notifiable Diseases Information System (SINAN, notification cases) and Hospital Information System (SIH)/SUS (hospitalization registers) databases., Results: The SUS database recorded 34,996 reports of dengue (International Classification of Diseases [ICD]: A90) as well as 1984 verified cases of severe dengue (ICD-A91). These hospitalizations for dengue and cases of severe dengue generally affected individuals aged 15-24 (17.74%) and 5-14 (20.86%) years, respectively. The epidemiological burden of dengue was substantial in Minas Gerais state, with the highest number of notifications nationally in 2013., Interpretation & Conclusion: From retrospective data associated with dengue records, our study sought to better highlight the locations with the largest number of dengue cases in the Minas Gerais state, and contribute to direct educational and surveillance actions of these regions applied to this infection., Competing Interests: None

In the last 40 years, Latin America countries, including Brazil, have suffered from the emergence and reemergence of arboviruses, first Dengue (DENV) and recently Zika (ZIKV) and Chikungunya (CHIKV). All three arboviruses are currently endemic in Brazil and have caused major outbreaks in recent years. Rio de Janeiro city, host of the last Summer Olympic Games and the Football World Cup, has been specially affected by them. A surveillance system based on symptomatic reports is in place in Rio, but the true number of affected individuals is unknown due to the great number of Zika, Dengue and Chikungunya asymptomatic cases. Seroprevalence studies are more suitable to evaluate the real number of cases in a given population. We performed a populational seroprevalence survey in Rio, with recruitment of a sample of volunteers of all ages and gender from July to October 2018, within randomly selected census tracts and household. A total of 2,120 volunteers were interviewed and tested with rapid immunochromatographic test for ZIKV, DENV and CHIKV. Individuals with positive results for IgG and/or IgM from only one virus were classified accordingly, while those with test results positive for both ZIKV and DENV were classified as flaviviruses. We corrected for sample design and non-response in data analysis, and calculated point estimate prevalence and 95% confidence intervals for each virus. Arbovirus prevalence in the Rio's population (n = 6,688,927) was estimated at 48.6% [95% CI 44.8-52.4] (n = 3,254,121) for flaviviruses and at 18.0% [95% CI 14.8-21.2] (n = 1,204,765) for CHIKV. Approximately 17.0% [95% CI 14.1-20.1] (n = 1,145,674) of Rio´s population had no contact with any of the three arboviruses. The reported cases of Zika, Dengue and Chikungunya by the current surveillance system in place is insufficient to estimate their real numbers, and our data indicate that Zika seroprevalence could be at least five times and Chikungunya 45 times bigger. The high number of individuals having never been infected by any of the three arboviruses, may indicate a proper scenario for future outbreaks., Competing Interests: The authors have declared that no competing interests exist.

We analyzed the presence of the mcr-1 gene in 165 extended-spectrum beta-lactamase-producing enterobacterales (ESBL-PE) obtained during 2017, from blood (40), urine (57), lower respiratory secretions (12) and rectal swabs (56) of patients hospitalized in the Instituto Nacional de Enfermedades Neoplásicas (Peru). Antimicrobial identification and susceptibility were determined by the Phoenix M50 automated system; colistin resistance by Colistin Agar-Spot (CAS); mrc-1 detection by colistin pre-diffusion and inhibition with EDTA test (CPD-E) and by polymerase chain reaction (PCR). We found that from the 165 ESBL-PE, 25 were positive for mcr-1 by the CPD-E method and confirmed by PCR. Colistin resistance was found in 20/165 by using the CAS method. Additionally, they showed resistance to fluoroquinolones and gentamicin, while remaining sensitive to amikacin; two isolates presented metallo-carbapenemases. Obtaining data on resistance to last-line antimicrobials (colistin) is crucial to establish measures for its control.

Background: Periodontitis has been associated with several systemic diseases and medical conditions, including oral cancer (OC). However, most studies reporting an association between OC and periodontal disease have used different clinical and radiographic criteria to define periodontal disease. This review aimed to evaluate the currently available evidence to determine an association between periodontal disease (extension and severity), OC, and oral potentially malignant disorders (OPMDs). Material and methods: A systematic search of studies published up to August 2018 was performed following the PRISMA guidelines in the electronic databases MEDLINE (PubMed) and COCHRANE (OVID). A methodological evaluation was made using the Strengthening the Reporting of Observational studies in Epidemiology (STROBE) checklist. Results: Eight studies (case-control, cross-sectional and cohort) were included. An increased clinical attachment loss, plaque index, bleeding on probing, and radiographic bone loss was found in patients with OC and OPMDs. Differences in the methodological characteristics, case definition used for periodontal diseases, and OC location did not allow estimating the odds ratio required to conduct a meta-analysis. Conclusion: Some studies suggest a positive relationship between periodontal disease, OC, and OPMDs; however, the currently available evidence is insufficient to draw solid conclusions.

Background & Objectives: Dengue is considered one of the greatest public health challenges in the world, especially, for tropical and subtropical countries. Brazil highlights with considerable number of registers associated with this arbovirus, with emphasis on the state of Minas Gerais and its municipalities in regions such as the midwest. We aimed to evaluate the economic and epidemiological impact of dengue in the midwest region of minas Gerais, from SUS perspective., Methods: Our study evaluated the epidemiological impact of dengue fever in the midwest region of Minas Gerais using data applied to Divinópolis city from SUS perspective between 2000 to 2015 considering SIH/SUS database (hospitalization registers) and 2007 to 2017 using the SINAN database (notification cases). We analyzed the number of notification registers and hospital services, as well as their costs, from a SUS perspective associated with this infection., Results: There were 26,516 notifications associated with dengue, with 21,953 cases being confirmed by SEMUSA, with a median incidence of 211 cases/100,000 inhabitants of dengue notifications between 2007 and 2017. The southeast and southwest regions in the municipality are highlighted with high number of cases. Additionally, 160 hospitalizations were recorded with 33.79% in individuals between 15 and 34 years old and expenses of USD 53,737.21 for SUS between 2000 and 2015., Interpretation & Conclusion: Divinópolis is the reference (social and economic) municipality of the midwest region in Minas Gerais state. Our study is the first conducted involving a long period of follow up applied to dengue context in this locality, especially, including the costs associated with hospitalization services. We hope to contribute to the discussions regarding the coping strategies of the disease, considering the impact in its different regions, highlighting the need for continued efforts and initiatives aimed at combating the vector of this and other arboviruses such as Zika and chikungunya., Competing Interests: None

The role of regulatory T cells (Tregs) on protective immunity in fungal infections, is controversial. Sporotrichosis is an emerging and worldwide-distributed subcutaneous mycosis caused by various related thermodimorphic fungi of the genus Sporothrix. Previously, we showed an elevated percent of Tregs around 21 days post-infection (dpi) in C57BL/6 mice infected with either Sporothrix schenckii or Sporothrix brasiliensis, but the effect of these cells in the ongoing infection was not evaluated. Here, we aim to characterize the role of Foxp3+ Tregs in a subcutaneous S. schenckii infection model. The flow cytometric analyses showed that S. schenckii infection elicited an expansion of a splenic CD4+Foxp3+ population, including a subset of Helios low + after ex vivo stimulation with S. schenckii-heat killed yeast. Depletion of Tregs in DEREG mice revealed a reduction of fungal burden in the skin and systemically in liver and kidneys, associated with enhanced Th1 and Th17 responses. Altogether, our results reveal for the first time that Tregs depletion in ongoing S. schenckii infection improves the protective antifungal immunity and these data suggest that Tregs modulation could be explored as a potential therapeutic strategy in sporotrichosis., (Copyright © 2020 Elsevier GmbH. Objective: To evaluate the number of asthma deaths and the temporal trend of the asthma-specific mortality rate in children and adolescents up to 19 years of age in Brazil., Methods: This is an ecological time-series study of asthma deaths reported in Brazil, in the population up to 19 years of age, between 1996 and 2015. The specific asthma mortality rate and its temporal trend were analyzed., Results: There were 5014 deaths during the 20 years evaluated, with the majority, 68.1%, being recorded in children under 5 years of age. The specific asthma mortality rate ranged from 0.57/100,000 in 1997 to 0.21/100,000 in 2014, with a significant reduction of 59.8%. Regarding the place of death, 79.4% occurred in a hospital setting. In this sample, the adolescents had a 1.5-fold higher chance of death out-of-hospital than children up to nine years of age. There was no significant difference in the temporal trend between the genders and no significant decrease in out-of-hospital deaths., Conclusions: This study found a temporal trend for a reduction in asthma deaths over 20 years in children and adolescents in Brazil. Mortality rates varied across the geographic regions of the country and were higher in the Northeast. The prevalence of deaths under 5 years of age may be associated with the greater vulnerability of this age group in low-income countries. In adolescence, deaths outside the hospital environment are noteworthy. Asthma deaths are rare but unacceptable events, considering the treatable nature of the disease and the presence of avoidable factors in most of fatal outcomes., (Copyright © 2019. Descriptive study conducted in order to determine the presence of the fimH and afa genes in urinary isolates of extended-spectrum beta-lactamases (ESBL) producing Escherichia coli. Isolates from project TO-06/09 of the Instituto Nacional de Salud del Niño in Lima, Peru were used. A total of 75 urinary isolates of Escherichia coli were included. Gene identification was performed by polymerase chain reaction. From the 75 isolates, 74 (98.7%) were positive for the fimH gene and 6 (8.0%) were positive for the afa gene. Virulence factors produced by the fimH and afa genes were evident in urinary isolates of ESBL producing Escherichia coli.
