Geometric arrays of vortices found in various systems owe their regular structure to mutual interactions within a confined system. In optics, such vortex crystals may form spontaneously within a resonator. Their crystallization is relevant in many areas of physics, although their usefulness is limited by the lack of control over their topology. On the other hand, programmable devices like spatial light modulators allow the design of nearly arbitrary vortex distributions but without any intrinsic evolution. By combining non-Hermitian optics with on-demand topological transformations enabled by metasurfaces, we report a solid-state laser that generates 10 × 10 vortex laser arrays with actively tunable topologies and non-local coupling dictated by the array’s topology. The vortex arrays exhibit sharp Bragg diffraction peaks, witnessing their coherence and topological charge purity, which we spatially resolve over the whole lattice by introducing a parallelized analysis technique. By structuring light at the source, we enable complex transformations that allow to arbitrarily partition orbital angular momentum within the cavity and to heal topological charge defects, thus realizing robust and versatile resonators for applications in topological optics.

International audience; In order to improve the outcome observed with azacitidine (AZA) in higher-risk Myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS), its combination with other drugs in MDS must be evaluated. So far, no combination has not been shown to be more effective than AZA alone. AZA-PLUS was a phase II trial that, in a "pick a winner" approach, randomly assigned patients with higher-risk MDS, CMML and low blast count AML to: AZA; AZA plus lenalidomide; AZA plus Valproic Acid or AZA plus Idarubicin. 322 patients were included. After six\,cycles, 69 (21.4%) CR\,+\,PR were observed with no benefit from any combination. Median EFS and OS were 17.2 and 19.7\,months in the whole cohort, respectively, with no difference across randomised arms. Infection and rates of hospitalisation during the first six\,cycles were higher in the AZA-LEN And AZA-IDA arm, related to increased myelosuppression. Factors associated with better response were IPSS, favourable or intermediate karyotype, haemoglobin, lower circulating blast count, fibrinogen level and lower LDH, while poorer survival was seen in therapy-related MDS and, in the case of TP53, PTPN11 or CSF3R mutation. The combinations used did not improve the outcome obtained with AZA alone. However, our "pick a winner" randomised strategy may remain useful with potentially more active drugs to be tested in combination with AZA.

To exploit the full potential of the transverse spatial structure of light using the Laguerre-Gaussian basis, it is necessary to control the azimuthal and radial components of the photons. Vortex phase elements are commonly used to generate these modes of light, offering precise control over the azimuthal index but neglect the radially dependent amplitude term which defines their associated corresponding transverse profile. Here we experimentally demonstrate the generation of high purity Laguerre-Gaussian beams with a single step on-axis transformation implemented with a dielectric phase-amplitude metasurface. By vectorially structuring the input beam and projecting it onto an orthogonal polarisation basis, we can sculpt any vortex beam in phase and amplitude. We characterize the azimuthal and radial purity of the generated vortex beams, reaching a purity of 98% for a vortex beam with $\ell=50$ and $p=0$. Furthermore, we comparatively show that the purity of the generated vortex beams outperform those generated with other well-established phase-only metasurface approaches. In addition, we highlight the formation of 'ghost' orbital angular momentum orders from azimuthal gratings (analogous to ghost orders in ruled gratings), which have not been widely studied to date. Terahertz resonant nanoantennas have recently become a key tool to investigate otherwise inaccessible interactions of such long-wavelength radiation with nano-matter. Because of their high-aspect-ratio rod-shaped geometry, resonant nanoantennas suffer from severe loss, which ultimately limits their field localization performance. Here we show, via a quasi-analytical model, numerical simulations, and experimental evidence, that a proper tapering of such nanostructures relaxes their overall loss, leading to an augmented local field enhancement and a significantly reduced resonator mode volume. Our findings, which can also be extended to more complex geometries and higher frequencies, have profound implications for enhanced sensing and spectroscopy of nano-objects, as well as for designing more effective platforms for nanoscale long-wavelength cavity quantum electrodynamics.

Recently developed plasmonic nanostructures are able to generate intense and localized magnetic hot spots in a large spectral range from the terahertz to the visible. However, a direct measurement of the magnetic field at the hot spot has not been performed yet, due to the absence of magnetic field detectors that work at those high frequencies and that fit the hot-spot area. We propose to place a graphene ribbon in the hot spot of a plasmonic nanostructure driven by a laser beam, such that a current is generated due to both the magnetic field at the hot spot and the electric field of the laser. We demonstrate that a nonlinear Hall voltage, which can be measured by standard electrical means, builds up across the ribbon, making it possible to directly probe the magnetic field at the hot spot., 9 pages, 7 figures

Nonlinear metasurfaces are a key-asset in nanophotonics, given their ability to scale down nonlinear optics to sub-µm thicknesses. To date, they are mainly realized using small-gap semiconductors, which hampers applications in the visible (VIS) range. High refractive-index transparent materials, such as lithium niobate (LiNbO 3 ), could be used to circumvent this limitation [1] , [2] , [3] , but efficient operation in this strategic spectral window is hindered by nanofabrication challenges. Here we show the first monolithic nonlinear metasurface based on LiNbO 3 for second-harmonic generation (SHG) in the VIS range with efficiency comparable to recent work in the near-infrared [3] . By tuning the pump polarization, we demonstrate efficient steering and polarization encoding of SHG, opening novel opportunities for nonlinear meta-optics.

Surface-Enhanced Infrared Absorption (SEIRA) has been proposed as a valuable tool for protein binding studies, but its performances have been often proven on model proteins undergoing severe secondary structure rearrangements, while ligand binding only marginally involves the protein backbone in the vast majority of the biologically relevant cases. In this study we demonstrate the potential of SEIRA microscopy for highlighting the very subtle secondary structure modifications associated with the binding of Lapatinib, a tyrosine kinase inhibitor (TKI), to epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR), a well-known driver of tumorigenesis in pathological settings such as lung, breast and brain cancers. By boosting the performances of Mid-IR plasmonic devices based on nanoantennas cross-geometry, accustoming the protein purification protocols, carefully tuning the protein anchoring methodology and optimizing the data analysis, we were able to detect EGFR secondary structure modification associated with few amino acids. A nano-patterned platform with this kind of sensitivity bridges biophysical and structural characterization methods, thus opening new possibilities in studying of proteins of biomedical interest, particularly for drug-screening purposes.

The generation of structured light by means of metasurfaces is presented and the applications in the characterizations of polarization rotation and Pancharatnam-Berry phase are discussed.

The study of nonthermal electrons, generated upon photoexcitation of plasmonic nanostructures, plays a key role in a variety of contexts, from photocatalysis and energy conversion to photodetection and nonlinear optics. Their ultrafast relaxation and subsequent release of energy to a low energy distribution of thermalized hot electrons has been the subject of a myriad of papers, mostly based on femtosecond transient absorption spectroscopy (FTAS). However, the FTAS signal stems from a complex interplay of different contributions arising from both nonthermal and thermal electrons, making the disentanglement of the two a very challenging task, so far accomplished only in terms of numerical simulations. Here a combined approach is introduced, based on a post-processing of the FTAS measurements guided by a reduced semiclassical model, the so-called extended two-temperature model, which has allowed the purely nonthermal contribution to the pump-probe experimental map recorded for 2D arrays of gold nanoellipsoids to be isolated. This approach displays the intimate correlation between electron energy and probe photon energy on the ultrafast time-scale of electron thermalization. It also sheds new light on the ultrafast transient optical response of gold nanostructures, and will help the development of optimized plasmonic configurations for nonthermal electrons generation and harvesting.

Ultrafast nanophotonics is an emerging research field aimed at the development of nanodevices capable of light modulation with unprecedented speed1–4. A promising approach exploits the optical nonlinearity of nanostructured materials (either metallic or dielectric) to modulate their effective permittivity via interaction with intense ultrashort laser pulses. Although the ultrafast temporal dynamics of such nanostructures following photoexcitation has been studied in depth5, sub-picosecond transient spatial inhomogeneities taking place at the nanoscale have been overlooked so far. Here, we demonstrate that the inhomogeneous spacetime distribution of photogenerated hot carriers induces a transient symmetry breaking in a highly symmetric plasmonic metasurface. The process is fully reversible and results in a broadband transient dichroism with a recovery of the initial isotropic state in less than 1 ps, overcoming the speed bottleneck caused by slower (electron–phonon and phonon–phonon) relaxation processes. Our results pave the way to ultrafast dichroic devices for high-speed modulation of light polarization. Inhomogeneity of the photogenerated carrier spacetime distribution enables transient symmetry breaking in a metasurface. As a result, broadband transient dichroism is demonstrated.

The electrophysiological recording of action potentials in human cells is a long-sought objective due to its pivotal importance in many disciplines. Among the developed techniques, invasiveness remains a common issue, causing cytotoxicity or altering unpredictably cell physiological response. In this work, a new approach for recording intracellular signals of outstanding quality and with noninvasiveness is introduced. By taking profit of the concept of mirror charge in classical electrodynamics, the new proposed device transduces cell ionic currents into mirror charges in a microfluidic chamber, thus realizing a virtual mirror cell. By monitoring mirror charge dynamics, it is possible to effectively record the action potentials fired by the cells. Since there is no need for accessing or interacting with the cells, the method is intrinsically noninvasive. In addition, being based on optical recording, it shows high spatial resolution and high parallelization. As shown through a set of experiments, the presented methodology is an ideal candidate for the next generation devices for the reliable assessment of cardiotoxicity on human-derived cardiomyocytes. More generally, it paves the way toward a new family of in vitro biodevices that will lay a new milestone in the field of electrophysiology.

The weakness of magnetic effects at optical frequencies is directly related to the lack of symmetry between electric and magnetic charges. Natural materials cease to exhibit appreciable magnetic phenomena at rather low frequencies and become unemployable for practical applications in optics. For this reason, historically important efforts were spent in the development of artificial materials. The first evidence in this direction was provided by split-ring resonators in the microwave range. However, the efficient scaling of these devices towards the optical frequencies has been prevented by the strong ohmic losses suffered by circulating currents. With all of these considerations, artificial optical magnetism has become an active topic of research, and particular attention has been devoted to tailor plasmonic metamolecules generating magnetic hot spots. Several routes have been proposed in these directions, leading, for example, to plasmon hybridization in 3D complex structures or Fano-like magnetic resonances. Concurrently, with the aim of electromagnetic manipulation at the nanoscale and in order to overcome the critical issue of heat dissipation, alternative strategies have been introduced and investigated. All-dielectric nanoparticles made of high-index semiconducting materials have been proposed, as they can support both magnetic and electric Mie resonances. Aside from their important role in fundamental physics, magnetic resonances also provide a new degree of freedom for nanostructured systems, which can trigger unconventional nanophotonic processes, such as nonlinear effects or electromagnetic field localization for enhanced spectroscopy and optical trapping.
