Introducción: Los síndromes hipertensivos del embarazo (SHE) son una de las complicaciones más frecuentes y se asocian a retraso del crecimiento intrauterino, lo que podría provocar alteraciones del desarrollo psicomotor específicas y diferentes de otras causas de prematuridad. Objetivo: (i) comparar el desarrollo psicomotor de niños y niñas prematuros nacidos de madres con SHE y por otras causas (NO-SHE) y (ii) relacionar las características del nacimiento con el desarrollo psicomotor. Sujetos y método: 56 niños prematuros fueron divididos en 2 grupos: hijos (as) de madres SHE (n=28) y NO-SHE (n= 28). Se evaluaron sus características generales (peso al nacer, talla, perímetro cefálico, edad gestacional, tipo de parto). Un evaluador experto aplicó la Escala de Desarrollo Infantil Bayley, tercera edición (BSID III) para determinar el desarrollo psicomotor. Resultados: SHE presentaron menor peso al nacer (p=0,021), nacieron principalmente por cesárea (p=0,005) y presentaron más casos de enfermedad de membrana hialina (p=0,049). En BSID III, los hijos e hijas de madres SHE tienen puntuaciones más bajas en habilidades motoras finas (p=0,037) y comportamiento adaptativo (p=0,047). En SHE existe una relación directa y moderada entre la comunicación expresiva y el peso al nacer (r=0,411; p=0,030) y con el perímetro cefálico (r=0,392; p=0,039). Conclusión: SHE tiene efectos diferenciados en el desarrollo psicomotor de los niños y niñas prematuros, lo que se manifiesta en puntuaciones más bajas en el área de motricidad fina y conducta adaptativa. Además, un mayor peso y circunferencia craneana al nacer se asocian con mejores puntuaciones en comunicación expresiva en este grupo.

Little is known about fire as an agent of direct animal mortality, and specifically, there is controversy regarding the effects of fire on reptiles. In the Sierra Morelos natural protected area in Mexico, both unplanned (e.g., man-made illegal and accidental burns) and prescribed burns occur during the dry season. In this study, we assessed direct fire-induced reptile mortality in the Sierra Morelos natural protected area by comparing live and dead individuals. Of the 14 reptile species reported in the area, seven were found dead due to fire. One-third of the individuals found in 2021 (34% of 169 ind.) and 2022 (33% of 33 ind.) were killed by fire. The mean density of detected dead individuals was 1.60 ± 2.99 individuals/ha in 2021 and 0.31 ± 0.27 individuals/ha in 2022. Mortality densities were similar in areas subjected to prescribed burns and in areas affected by unplanned burns (W= 37.5, p = 0.4383). Since our survey likely underestimated the actual mortality caused by fire, our findings show the important direct impact of fire on the reptile community of the Sierra Morelos natural protected area and support the notion that anthropogenic fire can represent a serious risk for reptiles in fragile ecosystems.

Background The global shift in healthcare during the COVID-19 pandemic led to challenges in the care of people living with HIV. Methods We conducted a retrospective study that aimed to delineate sociodemographic, clinical characteristics and outcomes, of people living with HIV diagnosed with ocular syphilis. Results Fifty-three people living with HIV were identified with ocular syphilis. Thirty-eight (71.6%) presented ocular symptoms. Twenty-three (43.3%) underwent lumbar puncture, 5 (9.4%) were positive for neurosyphilis. Forty-seven (88.6%) received treatment, 32 (68%) received standard treatment with aqueous crystalline penicillin G, and 15 (31.9%) were treated with alternative regimens due to the impossibility of hospitalization. Six (11.3%) individuals were lost to follow-up and/or did not receive treatment. Eighteen (56.2%) out of 32 individuals in the aqueous crystalline penicillin G group experienced serological response, 5 (15.6%) experienced treatment failure, and 9 (28.1%) were lost to follow-up. In the alternative therapy group, 12 out of 15 individuals (80%) experienced serological response. One (6.7%) experienced treatment failure, and 2 (13.3%) were lost to follow-up. Conclusions During the COVID-19 health emergency in Mexico, alternative treatments for ocular syphilis demonstrated favorable clinical outcomes amid challenges in accessing hospitalization.

Purpose: This study aims to minimize monitor units (MUs) of intensity-modulated treatments in the Monaco treatment planning system while preserving plan quality by optimizing the “Minimum Segment Width” (MSW) and “Fluence Smoothing” parameters. Materials and Methods: We retrospectively analyzed 30 prostate, 30 gynecological, 15 breast cancer, 10 head and neck tumor, 11 radiosurgery, and 10 hypo-fractionated plans. Original prostate plans employed “Fluence Smoothing” = Off and were reoptimized with Low, Medium, and High settings. The remaining pathologies initially used MSW = 0.5 cm and were reoptimized with MSW = 1.0 cm. Plan quality, including total MU, delivery time, and dosimetric constraints, was statistically analyzed with a paired t-test. Results: Prostate plans exhibited the highest MU variation when changing “Fluence Smoothing” from Off to High (average ΔMU = −5.1%; P < 0.001). However, a High setting may increase overall MU when MSW = 0.5 cm. Gynecological plans changed substantially when MSW increased from 0.5 cm to 1.0 cm (average ΔMU = −29%; P < 0.001). Organs at risk sparing and planning target volumes remained within 1.2% differences. Replanning other pathologies with MSW = 1.0 cm affected breast and head and neck tumor plans (average ΔMU = −168.38, average Δt = −11.74 s, and average ΔMU = −256.56, average Δt = −15.05 s, respectively; all with P < 0.004). Radiosurgery and hypofractioned highly modulated plans did not yield statistically significant results. Conclusions: In breast, pelvis, head and neck, and prostate plans, starting with MSW = 1.0 cm optimally reduces MU and treatment time without compromising plan quality. MSW has a greater impact on MU than the “Fluence Smoothing” parameter. Plans with high modulation might present divergent behavior, requiring a case-specific analysis with MSW values higher than 0.5 cm.

Remote sensing (RS) spectral time series provide a substantial source of information for the regular and cost-efficient monitoring of the Earth’s surface. Important monitoring tasks include land use and land cover classification, change detection, forest monitoring and crop type identification, among others. To develop accurate solutions for RS-based applications, often supervised shallow/deep learning algorithms are used. However, such approaches usually require fixed-length inputs and large labeled datasets. Unfortunately, RS images acquired by optical sensors are frequently degraded by aerosol contamination, clouds and cloud shadows, resulting in missing observations and irregular observation patterns. To address these issues, efforts have been made to implement frameworks that generate meaningful representations from the irregularly sampled data streams and alleviate the deficiencies of the data sources and supervised algorithms. Here, we propose a conceptually and computationally simple representation learning (RL) approach based on autoencoders (AEs) to generate discriminative features for crop type classification. The proposed methodology includes a set of single-layer AEs with a very limited number of neurons, each one trained with the mono-temporal spectral features of a small set of samples belonging to a class, resulting in a model capable of processing very large areas in a short computational time. Importantly, the developed approach remains flexible with respect to the availability of clear temporal observations. The signal derived from the ensemble of AEs is the reconstruction difference vector between input samples and their corresponding estimations, which are averaged over all cloud-/shadow-free temporal observations of a pixel location. This averaged reconstruction difference vector is the base for the representations and the subsequent classification. Experimental results show that the proposed extremely light-weight architecture indeed generates separable features for competitive performances in crop type classification, as distance metrics scores achieved with the derived representations significantly outperform those obtained with the initial data. Conventional classification models were trained and tested with representations generated from a widely used Sentinel-2 multi-spectral multi-temporal dataset, BreizhCrops. Our method achieved 77.06% overall accuracy, which is ∼6% higher than that achieved using original Sentinel-2 data within conventional classifiers and even ∼4% better than complex deep models such as OmnisCNN. Compared to extremely complex and time-consuming models such as Transformer and long short-term memory (LSTM), only a 3% reduction in overall accuracy was noted. Our method uses only 6.8k parameters, i.e., ∼400x fewer than OmnicsCNN and ∼27x fewer than Transformer. The results prove that our method is competitive in terms of classification performance compared with state-of-the-art methods while substantially reducing the computational load.

Abstract Background The utility of neutrophil‐to‐lymphocyte ratio (NLR), platelet to‐lymphocyte ratio (PLR) and monocyte‐to‐lymphocyte ratio (MLR) as prognostic indicators has not been investigated in canine parvovirosis (CPV). Hypothesis To evaluate whether these hematological ratios obtained at hospital admission in CPV are associated with outcome or duration of hospitalization. Animals. Four hundred one client‐owned dogs presented with CPV. Methods‐Retrospective multicenter cohort study. Medical records were reviewed to identify dogs with CPV. Data regarding signalment, complete blood count at admission, duration of hospitalization and outcome were collected. Results Of the 401 dogs included in the study, 336 (83.8%) survived to discharge. The median (25th and 75th percentiles) PLR in nonsurvivors (336.56 [159.84‐635.77]) was significantly higher than in survivors (217.65 [117.67‐389.65]) (P = .003). The area under the receiver‐operating characteristic curve for nonsurvival was 0.615 (95% CI [0.593‐0.691], P = .003). A cut off of 700 showed a 21.5% sensitivity and 90% specificity for nonsurvival. No association was observed between hospitalization duration and either hematological ratios or total WBC counts. The median (25th and 75th percentiles) lymphocyte count was below reference interval in all dogs and was significantly lower in the dogs which died (0.82 × 109/L [0.5‐1.87]) than in survivors (1.27 × 109/L [0.73‐2.22]) (P = .005). The median (25th and 75th percentiles) monocyte count however was lower in survivors (0.38 × 109/L [0.29‐1.59]), than in nonsurvivors (0.73 × 109/L [0.1‐2]) (P = .002). Conclusions Evaluation of PLR at hospital admission might be a useful marker of disease severity and could have prognostic value in dogs with CPV.

Introducción: la mayoría de las aplicaciones en patología digital se encuentran relacionadas con la oncológica, aunque se han propuesto algunos modelos recientes que permiten evaluar la utilidad en el diagnóstico histológico de microorganismos. Material y métodos: se realizó la siguiente revisión en la que se incluyeron 10 artículos publicados en inglés, que tienen como eje central el diagnóstico histopatológico de microorganismos y diferentes modelos de inteligencia artificial. Discusión: los diseñados se han probado para el diagnóstico de Helicobacter pylori, Mycobacterium tuberculosis, Aspergillus, Mucorales y microorganismos relacionados con onicomicosis. Conclusiones: se recomienda el uso de la inteligencia artificial en el diagnóstico histopatológico de microorganismos como un campo emergente que refuerza la función del patólogo coordinador de los diferentes modelos, optimizando así su función y mejorando los tiempos de trabajo y los niveles de efectividad.

The present database contains brain activity of subjective tinnitus sufferers at identifying their sound tinnitus. The main objective of this database is to provide spontaneous Electroencephalographic (EEG) activity at rest, and evoked EEG activity when tinnitus sufferers attempt to identify their sound tinnitus among 54 tinnitus sound examples. For the database, 37 volunteers were recruited: 15 ones without tinnitus (Control Group – CG), and 22 ones with tinnitus (Tinnitus Group – TG). For EEG recording, 30 channels were used to record two conditions: 1) basal condition, where the volunteer remained in a state of rest with the open eyes for two minutes; and 2) active condition, where the volunteer must have identified his/her sound stimulus by pressing a key. For the active condition, a sound-tinnitus library was generated in accordance with the most typical acoustic properties of tinnitus. The library consisted in ten pure tones (250 Hz, 500 Hz, 1 kHz, 2 kHz, 3 kHz, 3.5 kHz, 4 kHz, 6 kHz, 8 kHz, 10 kHz), a White Noise (WN), a Narrow Band noise-High frequencies (NBH, 4 kHz–10 kHz), a Narrow Band noise-Medium frequencies (NBM,1 kHz–4 kHz), a Narrow-Band noise Low frequencies (NBL, 250 Hz–1 kHz), ten pure tones combined with WN, ten pure tones superimposed with NBH, ten tones with NBM and ten pure tones combined with NBL. In total, 54 sound-tinnitus were applied for both groups. In the case of CG, volunteers must have identified a sound at 3.5 kHz. In addition to EEG information, a csv-file with audiometric and psychoacoustic information of volunteers is provided. For TG, this information refers to: 1) hearing level, 2) type of tinnitus, 3) tinnitus frequency, 4) tinnitus perception, 5) Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS) and 6) Tinnitus Functional Index (TFI). For CG, the information refers to: 1) hearing level, and 2) HADS.

Abstract Purpose Medicines in special situations (MSS) refer to off‐label or to unlicensed drugs under investigation (compassionate use). Our objectives were to evaluate characteristics and to estimate overall survival (OS), event‐free survival (EFS), and the duration of treatment (DT) of MSS used for cancer treatment at a multicentre comprehensive cancer institution. Methods Retrospective cohort study on adult cancer patients for whom an MSS treatment was requested (January 2011–December 2020). A descriptive analysis was performed and median OS and EFS and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were estimated. Survival curves were stratified by type of tumor, ECOG (Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group) performance status (PS), age, sex, treatment stage and type of drug (mechanism of action and target). Results Treatment was initiated in 2092 episodes (1930 patients) out of 2377 MSS episodes (2189 patients) requested, 33% for hematological treatment and 87% for advanced stage cancer. Median OS (months) was 21.1 (95% CI 19.4–22.7), median EFS was 5.6 (95% CI 5.1–6.0) months, and median DT was 4.5 [0.0; 115.3] months. Introduction: Ventilator weaning and extubation in patients with acute brain injuries pose a challenge for healthcare professionals due to the lack of clear consensus on extubation criteria. Objective: To summarize the available evidence on extubation of patients with acute brain injuries and analyze potential alternatives to the classical extubation criteria. Methods: A literature search was conducted in the Spanish and English languages, covering the last 20 years, across different databases. Systematic reviews with or without meta-analysis, guidelines and recommendations from scientific societies, clinical trials, and observational studies that met the inclusion criteria were included. Results: A total of 262 relevant articles were collected, of which, through analysis and comparison of the evidence, 48 articles were selected as most relevant to fulfill the stated objective. Conclusions: The available evidence is weak in providing a recommendation on extubation criteria for neurocritical patients. Early extubation could be considered in patients with a minimal level of consciousness while maintaining protective airway reflexes, without an increase in reintubation rate or mortality.

Abstract Off‐label use (OLU) is quite common in oncology due to the complexity of cancer and the time‐consuming regulatory process. However, outcomes of OLU in cancer treatment remain unclear. This study aimed to evaluate the overall survival (OS), event‐free survival (EFS), duration of treatment (DOT), and reason for treatment discontinuation in patients receiving immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICI) as OLU for solid tumors from 2011 to 2020. The study collected data on 356 episodes (353 patients), with a median age of 64.4 years, 36.2% women, and 14.6% ECOG ≥ 2. Median OS was 15.7 (11.9–18.7) months, and median EFS was 5.4 (3.8–6.6) months. Men, patients with metastatic disease or ECOG‐PS higher than 1, had worse survival outcomes. The findings derived from this study provide valuable information regarding the real‐world use of ICI‐OLU and contributes to enhancing the decision‐making process for individuals with cancer. Further research on immunotherapy outcomes of OLU in cancer is needed.

Spindle cell hemangioma is a rare benign vascular tumor. It has been linked to Maffucci syndrome, Klippel-Trenaunay syndrome, and other venous malformations. They are usually purplish dermal nodules on the distal extremities of children and young adults, with no sex predilection. A case of a 22-years-old patient who suffered from a subcutaneous nodule, painful on pressure, in the right leg is presented. On physical examination, a 1.5 cm violaceous round tumor was observed. The presence of a hemangioma was suspected. A simple excision was performed and sent to the pathology department. The sample was described as an intraluminal nodule made up of a proliferation of spindle-shaped cells with moderate atypia and isolated mitotic figures, and the diagnosis of intravascular spindle cell hemangioma was confirmed. The diagnosis of spindle cell hemangioma is anatomopathological and simple excision is usually sufficient as treatment, although they frequently recur. Since spindle cell hemangioma is a little-known entity and can be confused with other vascular lesions, the communication of this case is considered interesting. Knowledge of this type of injury can increase reported cases.

Purpose: The study is intended to perform an end-to-end test of the entire intraoperative process using cadaver heads. A simulation of tumor removal was performed, followed by irradiation of the bed and measurement of absorbed doses with radiochromic films. Materials and Methods: Low-energy X-ray intraoperative radiotherapy (IORT) was used for irradiation. A computed tomography study was performed at each site and the absorbed doses calculated by the treatment planning system, as well as absorbed doses with radiochromic films, were studied. Estudio exploratorio-descriptivo sobre un grupo de profesionales costarricenses en psicología acerca de sus actitudes hacia la aplicación de los principios psicológicos en la práctica odontológica. La muestra fue de 377 psicólogos (activos en el Colegio de Profesionales en Psicología de Costa Rica). A partir del cuestionario original diseñado por Gómez y Gómez (2007), el cual fue construido para estimar la necesidad de conformar programas universitarios que integren la psicología y la odontología, se aplicó una adaptación consistente en una encuesta de 10 preguntas autoadministradas de selección simple, la cual se efectuó en línea a través del sistema QuestionPro®. Se pudo evidenciar que existe una actitud positiva ante el enfoque interdisciplinario entre la Odontología y la Psicología; se demostró que un 74% de la muestra sostiene que los aspectos psicosociales son “Bastante importantes” en el marco de la atención odontológica. A pesar de ello, la mayoría (57%) de las personas consultadas indicó que no ha tenido ocasión de aplicar sus conocimientos y experiencia en psicología al contexto odontológico. Asimismo, un 72% de los participantes considera “Bastante importante” que los profesionales en Odontología reciban capacitación básica en el área psicológica para la prevención o contención de ciertos síntomas que puedan incidir en la salud mental. Por otra parte, el 80% de quienes respondieron la encuesta indicaron que las iniciativas interdisciplinarias de colaboración científica (investigación) y aplicada (ejercicio profesional) son “Bastante importantes” para producir beneficios tangibles en la prestación de servicios integrales a los pacientes y el bienestar del personal sanitario.

Gastrointestinal parasites and their control in buffaloes (Bubalus bubalis) represent increasing production costs. To improve sanitary plans in buffalo herds, experimental field re-search was carried out to evaluate the efficacy of three commercial anthelmintics against strongylids parasites in buffalo calves. The effectiveness of the anthelmintics was estimated through faecal egg count (FEC) reduction percentage. The study was conducted in a buffalo system dedicated to milk and meat production with crossbreed animals (Murrah and Mediterranean breeds) in the South of Lake Maracaibo, Venezuela. Twenty-eight buffalo calves, naturally infected, with a parasite load ≥ 350 eggs per gram of faeces (EPG), and age between 2 and 3 months, with an average weight of 65.9 kgs, were selected. The animals were grouped into four treatments: T0 control without anthelmintic; T1 fenbendazole 10%, Intervet laboratory, Brazil, at 5mg/kg orally; T2 ivermectin 1%, SIGMA laboratory, Venezuela, at 0.2 mg/kg subcutaneously; and T3 levamisole hydrochloride 22.3%, Valmor laboratory, Venezuela, at 4.5 mg/kg subcutaneously. The anthelmintics were applied in a single dose on day zero (0) of the research. A coprological diagnosis was performed prior to treatment and at 14 (A), 21 (B) and 28 (C) days after treatment. The faecal samples were examined by applying McMaster’s technique with saturated saline. Data was analyzed with descriptive statistics and the nonparametric Friedman test. The FEC reduction percentage was calculated for each anthelmintic. Moreover, the lower limit of the 95% confidence interval was calculated for each anthelmintic (low-CI95%). The mean EPG before treatment (BT) was 907.1 EPG, 978.6 EPG, 1057.1 EPG, and 921.4 EPG for T0, T1, T2, and T3, respectively. The mean of EPG during the evaluation of the different treatments showed significant variations (p 500). Furthermore, levamisole was most effective against strongylids. In the case of ivermectin, the FEC reduction percentage was less than 90% during the trial, resulting in a low-CI 95% of -7.2%, showing possible anthelmintic resistance.

The buffalo (Bubalus bubalis) is an animal species of great importance for producing milk and meat. Buffaloes have been considered rustic and resistant to many pathologies. However, they are susceptible to parasitic infections. Gastrointestinal parasites (GIP) decrease production, cause growth retardation and death of animals. Furthermore, buffalo calves are the most affected animals. To evaluate the prevalence (%) and mean intensity of infection of gastrointestinal parasites in buffalo calves and their association with age and sex, a non-experimental field study was carried out in the Agropecuaria Rosa Elena (a dual-purpose buffalo system) using crossbreed animals (Murrah and Mediterranean breeds). The buffalo farm is located in the municipality of Colón, Zulia, Venezuela. Eightythree out of 106 buffaloes were randomly selected, stratified by age (months): A (≤ 1 m); B (>1 ≤2 m); C (>2 ≤ 3 m); and D (> 3 ≤ 4 m), and sex. Fecal samples were taken directly from the rectum and processed by McMaster’s technique using saturated saline as flotation medium. The eggs or oocysts per gram of feces (EPG/OPG) were determined. The data was analyzed to determine the prevalence using contingency tables and Chi2; for the intensity variable, the mean of EPG and OPG was calculated, and an ANOVA and comparison of Tukey means was performed. The overall prevalence was 94%, with polyparasitism (37.8%, 32.9%, and 3.7% in two, three, and four GIP species, respectively). Therefore, it was possible to identify these parasites: strongylids (34%), Strongyloides sp. (44%); Toxocara vitulorum (37%) and Eimeria spp. (83%). In the age groups the overall prevalence was higher in C (100%), for strongylids (77.8%) and Strongyloides sp. (72.2%) in C, T. vitulorum (66.7%) in B, with significant association (p0.05). IntroductionThe prevalence of frailty is increasing worldwide, emphasizing the importance of prioritizing healthy ageing. To address this, cost-effective and minimally supervised interventions are being sought. This study aimed to assess the impact of an educational program on frailty status, physical function, physical activity, sleep patterns, and nutritional status in community-dwelling older adults with at least 1 Fried’s frailty criteria.MethodsA 6-month multicentre randomized controlled trial was conducted from March 2022 to February 2023 in 14 health centres located in Cadiz and Malaga, Spain. The educational intervention consisted of 4 group sessions and 6 follow-up phone calls spread over 6 months. The program focused on educating participants about frailty and its impact on health, providing guidelines for physical activity, healthy dietary habits, cognitive training, psychological well-being and social activities. Los memes de Internet forman parte del día a día de los jóvenes que en la actualidad se comunican en los medios digitales. Ante la llegada y consolidación de esta nueva tipología textual, este artículo propone introducir en el aula de Lengua Castellana y Literatura, aprovechando su potencial motivacional entre los adolescentes, el meme de Internet como recurso didáctico para el desarrollo de la competencia pragmática de los estudiantes. Para ello, se realiza un estudio de la percepción de los memes por parte de los estudiantes y, con base en los resultados, aporta el diseño de una propuesta empleando los memes como principal herramienta didáctica. Los resultados de la aplicación de la propuesta en aula confirman el impacto didáctico y motivacional positivo que estos tienen en el aula de Lengua Castellana y Literatura.

Abstract Background Calcareous outcrops, rocky areas composed of calcium carbonate (CaCO3), often host a diverse, specialized, and threatened biomineralizing fauna. Despite the repeated evolution of physiological and morphological adaptations to colonize these mineral rich substrates, there is a lack of genomic resources for calcareous rock endemic species. This has hampered our ability to understand the genomic mechanisms underlying calcareous rock specialization and manage these threatened species. Results Here, we present a new draft genome assembly of the threatened limestone endemic land snail Oreohelix idahoensis and genome skim data for two other Oreohelix species. The O. idahoensis genome assembly (scaffold N50: 404.19 kb; 86.6% BUSCO genes) is the largest (~ 5.4 Gb) and most repetitive mollusc genome assembled to date (85.74% assembly size). The repetitive landscape was unusually dominated by an expansion of long terminal repeat (LTR) transposable elements (57.73% assembly size) which have shaped the evolution genome size, gene composition through retrotransposition of host genes, and ectopic recombination. Genome skims revealed repeat content is more than 2–3 fold higher in limestone endemic O. idahoensis compared to non-calcareous Oreohelix species. Gene family size analysis revealed stress and biomineralization genes have expanded significantly in the O. idahoensis genome. Conclusions Hundreds of threatened land snail species are endemic to calcareous rock regions but there are very few genomic resources available to guide their conservation or determine the genomic architecture underlying CaCO3 resource specialization. Our study provides one of the first high quality draft genomes of a calcareous rock endemic land snail which will serve as a foundation for the conservation genomics of this threatened species and for other groups. The high proportion and activity of LTRs in the O. idahoensis genome is unprecedented in molluscan genomics and sheds new light how transposable element content can vary across molluscs. The genomic resources reported here will enable further studies of the genomic mechanisms underlying calcareous rock specialization and the evolution of transposable element content across molluscs.

La prevalencia de la infertilidad no posee datos muy exactos y varía en cada región, pero se estima que aproximadamente entre un 10 a 20% de las parejas experimentan algún problema de fertilidad durante su vida reproductiva. Según la Organización Mundial de la Salud (OMS), entre 48 millones de parejas y 186 millones de personas padecen de trastornos reproductivos en todo el mundo. El objetivo de este estudio fue la evaluación citogenética en parejas con esterilidad e infertilidad que concurrieron al Departamento de Genética del Instituto de Investigaciones en Ciencias de la Salud de la Universidad Nacional de Asunción (IICS-UNA) en el periodo septiembre 2021 a febrero 2022. Dicha evaluación citogenética fue realizada en muestras de 19 parejas mediante el análisis microscópico de 30 metafases por paciente. Se identificaron anomalías cromosómicas en algunas parejas estudiadas, se encontraron tres anomalías cromosómicas estructurales y varios polimorfismos o variantes cromosómicas. En el 63% de los individuos estudiados se observó un cariotipo normal, en el 8% alteraciones cromosómicas y en el 29% variantes cromosómicas. De las anomalías cromosómicas encontradas, las deleciones y translocaciones observadas se relacionan con una producción de gametos desequilibrados, dando lugar a abortos espontáneos y a la imposibilidad de concebir; en las parejas con cariotipo normal, se identificaron factores de riesgo como la edad, hábitos tóxicos como el consumo de tabaco, y enfermedades de base.

IntroductionThis study aims to investigate the health factors associated with cognitive frailty in frail and pre-frail older adults living in the community.MethodsA total of 233 older adults meeting Fried’s criteria for pre-frailty or frailty were included. Cognitive status was evaluated using the Short Portable Mental Status Questionnaire. Health factors encompassed nutritional status (evaluated using the Mini Nutritional Assessment tool, body mass index, and waist, arm, and leg circumferences), physical function (assessed with the Short Physical Performance Battery), quality of life (measured with the total index of the EuroQoL 5-Dimension 5-Level questionnaire - EQoL-Index -, and the Visual-Analogue Scale - QoL-VAS - for today’s health state), as well as sleep, physical activity, and inactivity estimated through wrist-worn accelerometers. Escherichia coli isolates that are resistant to cefixime and amoxicillin/clavulanic acid, but apparently susceptible to cefuroxime, with no ESBL identified, were initially detected in Madrid from urine samples in 2019. Throughout 2020 and 2021, all cases of community UTI by E. coli from six health areas in Madrid were studied. A representative sample of 23 cases was selected for further studies. The broth microdilution method and the agar diffusion method were performed to determine the antibiotic susceptibility. WGS was carried out for phylogeny, resistome and virulome analysis. Community consumption of third-generation oral cephalosporins in Madrid (2017–2021) was analyzed. A total of 582 (1.3%) E. coli isolates had the mentioned resistance profile. The mutation at position –32 (T > A) of the AmpC promoter was found in 21 isolates. No plasmid AmpC- or ESBL-encoding genes were detected. A cluster of 20 ST12 isolates was detected by cgMLST. A 6.2% increase in the consumption of third-generation oral cephalosporins, especially cefixime, was observed in Madrid. Chromosomal AmpC-hyperproducing ST12 E. coli isolates could be implicated in the increase in community UTI cases by cefixime-resistant isolates, which correlates with an increasing trend of cefixime consumption.

The repercussions of the pandemic caused by the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus over recent years have posed an unprecedented challenge for the whole of society, affecting the well-being of everyone. Among all the variables affected in relation to well-being, Anxiety, Emotional Intelligence, and Effective Personality (Self-Esteem, Academic Self-Realisation, Resolute Self-Efficacy, Social Self-Realisation) have been highlighted. The aim of this study is to assess the evolution of those variables across three temporal phases: pre-pandemic, during the pandemic, and up until the end of the study in April 2022. A study was conducted during these temporal phases with three cohorts from Spanish Universities. The cohorts were formed of people assessed for Anxiety (660 pre-pandemic, 460 during the pandemic, and 311 at the end of the study), Emotional Intelligence (355 pre-pandemic, 91 during the pandemic, 311 at the end of the study), and Effective Personality (708 pre-pandemic, 174 in 2018, 311 at the end of the study). Anxiety was assessed with the State–Trait Anxiety Inventory, Emotional Intelligence with the Trait Meta-Mood Scale and TMMS-24, and Effective Personality with the Cuestionario Personalidad Eficaz-Universidad (the Effective Personality Questionnaire-University). The results showed a rise in the state of anxiety during COVID-19, with a subsequent reduction two years into the pandemic; however, anxiety rates remained higher than before the pandemic. Emotional intelligence increased in the emotional attention factor, but diminished as regards both clarity and regulation. Effective Personality was at lower levels for all factors (Self-Esteem, Academic Self-Realisation, Resolute Self-Efficacy, Social Self-Realisation). The main conclusion was the need for assistance with the dimensions under study, in order to improve the well-being of university students after the serious effects caused by COVID-19.

Abstract Background Alzheimer’s disease is the most prevalent cause of dementia in the elderly. Neuronal death and synaptic dysfunctions are considered the main hallmarks of this disease. The latter could be directly associated to an impaired metabolism. In particular, glucose metabolism impairment has demonstrated to be a key regulatory element in the onset and progression of AD, which is why nowadays AD is considered the type 3 diabetes. Methods We provide a thread regarding the influence of glucose metabolism in AD from three different perspectives: (i) as a regulator of the energy source, (ii) through several metabolic alterations, such as insulin resistance, that modify peripheral signaling pathways that influence activation of the immune system (e.g., insulin resistance, diabetes, etc.), and (iii) as modulators of various key post-translational modifications for protein aggregation, for example, influence on tau hyperphosphorylation and other important modifications, which determine its self-aggregating behavior and hence Alzheimer’s pathogenesis. Conclusions In this revision, we observed a 3 edge-action in which glucose metabolism impairment is acting in the progression of AD: as blockade of energy source (e.g., mitochondrial dysfunction), through metabolic dysregulation and post-translational modifications in key proteins, such as tau. Therefore, the latter would sustain the current hypothesis that AD is, in fact, the novel diabetes type 3.

Introducción: el progreso en los tratamientos para el lupus eritematoso sistémico (LES) resultó en una disminución de la mortalidad; sin embargo, la enfermedad cardiovascular y las complicaciones infecciosas aún son las principales causas de muerte. La evidencia apoya la participación del sistema inmunológico en la generación de la placa aterosclerótica, así como su conexión con las enfermedades autoinmunes. Objetivos: describir la frecuencia de eventos cardiovasculares (ECV) en el RELESSAR transversal (Registro de Lupus Eritematoso Sistémico de la Sociedad Argentina de Reumatología), así como sus principales factores de riesgo asociados. Materiales y métodos: estudio descriptivo y transversal para el cual se tomaron los pacientes ingresados en el registro RELESSAR transversal. Se describieron las variables sociodemográficas y clínicas, las comorbilidades, score de actividad y daño. ECV se definió como la presencia de al menos una de las siguientes patologías: enfermedad arterial periférica, cardiopatía isquémica o accidente cerebrovascular. El evento clasificado para el análisis fue aquel posterior al diagnóstico del LES. Se conformaron dos grupos macheados por edad y sexo 1:2. Resultados: 1515 pacientes mayores de 18 años participaron del registro. Se describieron 80 pacientes con ECV (5,3%). En este análisis se incluyeron 240 pacientes conformando dos grupos. La edad media fue de 47,8 (14,4) y 47,6 (14,2) en el grupo con y sin ECV respectivamente. Los pacientes con ECV tuvieron mayor duración del LES en meses, mayor índice de Charlson, mayor SLICC (Systemic Lupus International Collaborating Clinics/American College of Rheumatology), mayor frecuencia de manifestaciones neurológicas, síndrome antifosfolípido, hospitalizaciones y uso de ciclofosfamida. IntroductionInborn errors of immunity (IEI) are a heterogeneous group of diseases caused by intrinsic defects of the immune system. Estimating the immune competence of immunocompromised patients for an infection risk assessment or after SARS-CoV-2 vaccination constituted a challenge.MethodsThe aim of this study was to determine the humoral responses of patients with IEI through a comprehensive analysis of specific receptor-binding domain-positive (RBD+) IgG+ memory B cells (MBCs) by flow cytometry, together with routine S-specific IgG antibodies and QuantiFERON SARS-CoV-2 (T-cell response), before the vaccine and 3 weeks after a second dose.Results and discussionWe first analyzed the percentage of specific RBD+ IgG+ MBCs in healthy healthcare workers. Within the control group, there was an increase in the percentage of specific IgG+ RBD+ MBCs 21 days after the second dose, which was consistent with S-specific IgG antibodies.Thirty-one patients with IEI were included for the pre- and post-vaccination study; IgG+ RBD+ MBCs were not evaluated in 6 patients due to an absence of B cells in peripheral blood. We detected various patterns among the patients with IEI with circulating B cells (25, 81%): an adequate humoral response was observed in 12/25, consider by the detection of positive S-specific IgG antibodies and the presence of specific IgG+ RBD+ MBCs, presenting a positive T-cell response; in 4/25, very low S-specific IgG antibody counts correlated with undetectable events in the IgG+ RBD+ MBC compartment but with positive cellular response. Despite the presence of S-specific IgG antibodies, we were unable to detect a relevant percentage of IgG+ RBD+ MBCs in 5/25; however, all presented positive T-cell response. Lastly, we observed a profound failure of B and T-cell response in 3 (10%) patients with IEI, with no assessment of S-specific IgG antibodies, IgG+ RBD+ MBCs, and negative cellular response. The identification of specific IgG+ RBD+ MBCs by flow cytometry provides information on different humoral immune response outcomes in patients with IEI and aids the assessment of immune competence status after SARS-CoV-2 mRNA vaccine (BNT162b2), together with S-specific IgG antibodies and T-cell responses.

La formación de competencias en gestión y administración posee características distintivas que requieren estrategias docentes y evaluativas congruentes con dicho campo de estudio. El objetivo de la investigación fue analizar las metodologías de enseñanza y evaluación de los aprendizajes en el ámbito de los programas de pregrado del campo de la gestión y la administración en la Universidad de Antofagasta, Chile, mediante un diseño mixto realizado durante los años 2021 y 2022. Se considera el análisis documental de los programas de asignaturas y guías de aprendizaje de un caso único, así como la participación de 10 estudiantes de último año y 5 docentes como informantes clave, quienes mediante entrevistas semiestructuradas y grupos focales comparten sus experiencias y perspectivas sobre el proceso formativo. Los principales hallazgos del estudio muestran una presencia importante de metodologías tradicionales de enseñanza y evaluación, tales como clases magistrales o pruebas teóricas, combinadas con metodologías activas centradas en el estudiantado como aprendizaje basado en problemas o juego de roles. Los relatos de las personas informantes clave, exponen las repercusiones de la modalidad online implementada durante la pandemia, especialmente en la motivación del cuerpo docente por la baja asistencia y participación del estudiantado en clases virtuales. La principal conclusión expone que el caso estudiado evidencia algunas de las complejidades para la docencia universitaria emanadas del cambio de paradigma que propone el modelo de formación por competencias laborales, lo que requiere el fortalecimiento de la profesionalización docente para la implementación de metodologías de enseñanza y de evaluación afines con el modelo formativo indicado en el caso de estudio.

The impacts of disease on host vital rates can be demonstrated using longitudinal studies, but these studies can be expensive and logistically challenging. We examined the utility of hidden variable models to infer the individual effects of infectious disease from population-level measurements of survival when longitudinal studies are not possible. Our approach seeks to explain temporal deviations in population-level survival after introducing a disease causative agent when disease prevalence cannot be directly measured by coupling survival and epidemiological models. We tested this approach using an experimental host system (Drosophila melanogaster) with multiple distinct pathogens to validate the ability of the hidden variable model to infer per-capita disease rates. We then applied the approach to a disease outbreak in harbor seals (Phoca vituline) that had data on observed strandings but no epidemiological data. We found that our hidden variable modeling approach could successfully detect the per-capita effects of disease from monitored survival rates in both the experimental and wild populations. Our approach may prove useful for detecting epidemics from public health data in regions where standard surveillance techniques are not available and in the study of epidemics in wildlife populations, where longitudinal studies can be especially difficult to implement.

To investigate the influence of geographic constrains to mobility on SARS-CoV-2 circulation before the advent of vaccination, we recently characterized the occurrence in Sicily of viral lineages in the second pandemic wave (September to December 2020). Our data revealed wide prevalence of the then widespread through Europe B.1.177 variant, although some viral samples could not be classified with the limited Sanger sequencing tools used. A particularly interesting sample could not be fitted to a major variant then circulating in Europe and has been subjected here to full genome sequencing in an attempt to clarify its origin, lineage and relations with the seven full genome sequences deposited for that period in Sicily, hoping to provide clues on viral evolution. The obtained genome is unique (not present in databases). It hosts 20 single-base substitutions relative to the original Wuhan-Hu-1 sequence, 8 of them synonymous and the other 12 encoding 11 amino acid substitutions, all of them already reported one by one. They include four highly prevalent substitutions, NSP12:P323L, S:D614G, and N:R203K/G204R; the much less prevalent S:G181V, ORF3a:G49V and N:R209I changes; and the very rare mutations NSP3:L761I, NSP6:S106F, NSP8:S41F and NSP14:Y447H. GISAID labeled this genome as B.1.1 lineage, a lineage that appeared early on in the pandemic. Phylogenetic analysis also confirmed this lineage diagnosis. Comparison with the seven genome sequences deposited in late 2020 from Sicily revealed branching leading to B.1.177 in one branch and to Alpha in the other branch, and suggested a local origin for the S:G118V mutation.

Cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) are a very versatile material, and optimizing the reaction conditions to obtain them is vital for cost savings, purity, selectivity, or performance. In this study, the reaction conditions of the CNCs were tested, as well as their application as binders for the fabrication of electrodes of a symmetric capacitor (based on activated carbon). The resulting CNCs were physicochemically characterized using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, X-ray diffraction, atomic force microscopy, and its capacitive properties using cyclic voltammetry (CV). It was found that the best reaction conditions were at 45°C, 30 and 45 minutes, and 64 wt%. The CNCs were used as a binder, as they conferred stability to the electrodes and prevented the crumbling of the activated carbon electrodes. The CV measurements showed a capacitor behavior; CNCs can be used in energy storage applications.

Una creciente cantidad de requisitos técnicos, públicos y privados, para la comercialización de bienes, ponen en riesgo la inserción internacional argentina. Abordamos este problema mediante estudios de caso en Argentina en los sectores de arándanos y maquinaria agrícola. Describimos los requisitos técnicos en mercados externos relevantes y analizamos los desafíos y estrategias de las empresas para cumplirlos. Encontramos que los requisitos técnicos no son una barrera infranqueable para las empresas que deciden cumplirlos, pero aun así pueden obstaculizar su inserción internacional. Existen políticas públicas que pueden facilitar que las empresas los conozcan y cumplan en forma efectiva y poco costosa.

Durante los últimos años, la inversión sostenible y responsable en España ha crecido no solo en el patrimonio de los activos gestionados con criterios Ambientales, Sociales y de Gobernanza, sino en la sofisticación de las estrategias de selección, integración e influencia empleadas. El extendido uso del marco de los Objetivos de Desarrollo Sostenible de Naciones Unidas, el crecimiento de los mercados de bonos verdes y sociales, así como el impulso regulatorio europeo a las finanzas sostenibles, son los ejes de expansión de las finanzas sostenibles en el presente. Por el lado de las tendencias, el impulso de la financiación climática en la recuperación económica a la crisis COVID-19, la evolución del mercado de la inversión sostenible en América Latina y la calidad y disponibilidad de información no financiera serán clave en el desarrollo de esta filosofía de inversión en el futuro próximo.

This manuscript addresses the phenomenon of masked priming and the cognitive process of switching from Spanish to English while reading in sequential bilingual texts compared to heritage speakers. A lexical decision task was employed in the present study with masked translation priming, which serves as a valuable tool for elucidating the orthographic and lexical processes involved in the initial stages of reading. This study builds upon previous research conducted on monolingual masked priming, which consistently demonstrates shifts in the response time (RT) distributions when comparing related and unrelated primes. Within the framework of a diffusion model, we implemented two theoretical positions. First, we posited that translation priming operates at the orthographic level, resulting in enhanced efficiency during the encoding process. Second, we explored the possibility that translation priming operates at the semantic level, influencing the accumulation of evidence during the lexical decision task. The findings of the present study indicate that translation priming elicits outcomes similar to those observed in monolingual priming paradigms. Specifically, we observed that translation priming facilitation is manifested as shifts in the RT distributions. These findings are interpreted to suggest that the benefits derived from the encoding process are not specific to the accessed lexicon following a brief stimulus presentation.

Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is a multifactorial neurodegenerative disorder without a cure, despite the enormous number of investigations and therapeutic approaches. AD is a consequence of microglial responses to “damage signals”, such as aggregated tau oligomers, which trigger a neuro-inflammatory reaction, promoting the misfolding of cytoskeleton structure. Since AD is the most prevalent cause of dementia in the elderly (>60 years old), new treatments are essential to improve the well-being of affected subjects. The pharmaceutical industry has not developed new drugs with efficacy for controlling AD. In this context, major attention has been given to nutraceuticals and novel bioactive compounds, such as molecules from the Andean Shilajit (AnSh), obtained from the Andes of Chile. Primary cultures of rat hippocampal neurons and mouse neuroblastoma cells were evaluated to examine the functional and neuroprotective role of different AnSh fractions. Our findings show that AnSh fractions increase the number and length of neuronal processes at a differential dose. All fractions were viable in neurons. The AnSh fractions inhibit tau self-aggregation after 10 days of treatment. Finally, we identified two candidate molecules in M3 fractions assayed by UPLC/MS. Our research points to a novel AnSh-derived fraction that is helpful in AD. Intensive work toward elucidation of the molecular mechanisms is being carried out. AnSh is an alternative for AD treatment or as a coadjuvant for an effective treatment.

ABSTRACT: Objectives: The aim of this this study was to describe the presence of different variants of the fosA gene in fosfomycin-resistant Escherichia coli strains in Madrid, Spain. Methods: fos genes were searched for in 55 E. coli strains collected from seven representative hospitals located in Madrid. A phenotypic screening test was performed following the disk diffusion method with sodium phosphonoformate added as described by Nakamura et al. Additionally, a molecular study based on PCR was used to confirm the screening results. Positive strains for fos genes were further subjected to whole-genome sequencing (WGS). Results: Phenotypic screening was positive in 9/55 strains (16.4%), although genotypic detection was positive in only 3 (fosA3, fosA4 and fosA6). Thus, the prevalence of fos genes in Madrid was 5.5% (3/55). WGS data were not available for the fosA6-positive strain. One isolate with fosA3 (ST69) carried a blaCTX-M-55 gene and seven virulence genes (air, eilA, iha, iss, lpfA, sat and senB). The fosA4-positive isolate (ST4038) carried the virulence genes iss, lpfA, iroN and mchF. Both fos genes were located between two IS26 mobile elements of a plasmid. Conclusion: We detected the presence of different variants of plasmid-mediated fosA genes in fosfomycin-resistant E. coli strains in Madrid, Spain. Despite the few reports in Europe, it would be of interest to monitor the spread of these acquired resistance genes.

Background: The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has generated changes due to confinement, this measure can increase the perception of loneliness. The objective was to estimate the frequencies of emotional, social and general loneliness and their association with fear and anxiety with COVID-19, religiosity and severe deterioration of quality of life in middle-aged women. Methods: A cross-sectional study in Colombian women (40-59 y, n=984) surveyed with an electronic form that included sociodemographic characteristics and validated measures (Menopause Rating Scale, de Jong Gierveld Loneliness Scale, fear of COVID-19 scale, Coronavirus Anxiety Scale and Francis Scale for Religiosity). Associations of emotional, social and general loneliness (dependent variables) with severe somatic, psychological, urogenital and quality of life deterioration, as well as with high religiosity, anxiety and high fear of COVID-19 (independent variables), were estimated. Results: The median age was 47 years old, and 39.2% [95% CI: 36.2-42.3] postmenopausal. La evolución de la terapia antirretroviral ha generado un gran impacto en la sobrevida de los pacientes con infección por VIH produciendo un aumento en la presencia de comorbilidades no relacionadas al sida, tales como las enfermedades autoinmunitarias. Objetivo: Realizar una búsqueda actualizada de la información disponible respecto a las enfermedades autoinmunitarias y su presentación en pacientes con infección por el VIH. Materiales y métodos: Mediante una búsqueda avanzada en bases de datos de literatura médica desde enero 1989 hasta 2021 usando las palabras claves como VIH, manifestaciones reumáticas, autoinmunidad, únicamente literatura en ingles en pacientes mayores de 18 años. Resultados: Se encontró que las enfermedades autoinmunes tienen una mayor prevalencia en los pacientes con VIH en comparación con la población general, siendo reportado un 9% en estudios retrospectivos. La presentación de enfermedad autoinmune es mayor durante los estadios donde la carga viral es elevada y tiende a presentare de forma más variada por su traslape con enfermedad propia del VIH. Conclusiones: Esta revisión se enfocan en las características de presentación de las enfermedades reumáticas en la población con VIH, así como la discusión terapéutica para estos pacientes y el uso de terapia TAR.

Roberts’ False Brook Salamander (Pseudoeurycea robertsi) is a critically endangered plethodontid salamander, endemic to the Nevado de Toluca Volcano (NTV), Mexico. Little is known about the biology and ecology of this species, including its microhabitats. Thus, this study aimed to collect basic information about P. robertsi. We sampled fourteen forested sites in the NTV; to corroborate the correct identification of the species we used genetic data, we assessed the variation in head morphometric measurements and dorsal colouration patterns amongst localities and the microhabitat features associated with P. robertsi presence. Of the four potential salamander species, P. robertsi was the most abundant (89.80%) and widely distributed (approximately within 130 km2) salamander in the NTV. We did not find significant variations in morphometry; however, we found significant differences in dorsal patterns between populations (in the number and size of segments of the dorsal stripe). The average total length for 185 adults was 89.15 mm (38.7–117.9 mm); we found seven patterns of dorsal stripe. We found 98% of P. robertsi individuals under the bark of fallen logs in Abies religiosa and A. religiosa-Pinus sp. forests, with a higher number of detected salamanders in naturally-fallen logs than in cut logs (34% vs. 10%). Thus, keeping well-preserved A. religiosa forests and retaining fallen logs is essential to P. robertsi conservation.

Objective: The aim of this study is to evaluate the prevalence of T. pallidum infection markers in HIV-positive individuals receiving highly active antiretroviral therapy (ART) in the Mexico City HIV/AIDS Program, as well as predictive characteristics. Methods: The reverse serologic algorithm method was used for the T. pallidum diagnosis, and applied to 2,383 HIV-positive individuals. Socio-demographic characteristics, sexual practices, previous syphilis diagnosis, and length of antiretroviral treatment, were evaluated. Variables significantly associated with syphilis markers were analyzed using a logistic regression model. Results: Prevalence of “active or resolved” and “probable active” infection markers were 44.2% and 28.8%, respectively. Predictive factors were: Clinic Specialized Condesa Iztapalapa (CECI), previous syphilis diagnosis, MSM, and receptive sex practices. Conclusions: The prevalence of T. pallidum infection markers was the highest ever reported in Mexico, and was related to specific sexual practices as well as previous syphilis diagnosis, elements which require preventive measures in the Mexico City HIV/AIDS Program.

Objetivo: El objetivo de la presente investigación es descubrir la realidad existente en el sector hotelero de lujo de la zona centro de Madrid en lo concerniente a la implementación de estrategias y técnicas de Marketing Sensorial Olfativo a fin de revelar en qué medida se llevan a cabo tales estrategias en la actualidad, dónde, quién y con qué finalidad. Diseño/metodología/enfoque: La investigación es de carácter cuantitativo y ha sido llevada a cabo mediante una encuesta tipo CAPI asistida por un Smartphone con un software que navega por el cuestionario. Dicha encuesta tuvo que ser completada por personal del hotel cualificado con los conocimientos necesarios para poder responder a las preguntas planteadas. Resultados: Los resultados de la investigación validaron tres de las cinco hipótesis inicialmente planteadas para el estudio, por lo que se demostró que los hoteles de lujo de Madrid Centro utilizan tales estrategias para diferenciarse de la competencia y crear marca olfativa. Asimismo, se pone de relieve que un pequeño porcentaje de hoteles sigue sin usar dichas técnicas y que los niveles de satisfacción de los clientes se ven afectados por éstas positivamente entre otros resultados que serán expuestos más adelante. Limitaciones/implicaciones: Debido a la responsabilidad y carga de trabajo que implican las funciones de las personas necesarias para responder la encuesta, no se obtuvieron respuestas de ciertos hoteles. De la planificación de veintiún hoteles inicialmente listados conseguimos catorce respuestas, todas ellas cara a cara. Originalidad/contribución: Ha sido posible definir la realidad del Marketing Olfativo en el sector hotelero de lujo de Madrid Centro, así como las implicaciones que tiene y su contribución para crear una atmosfera agradable para los consumidores y garantizar su captación y fidelización a través de los aromas.

Background: Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) incidence should be calculated in cross-sectional studies using recent infection testing algorithms (RITA) that consider clinical variables and serological test results such as enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and dried blood spot (DBS) analysis. Methods: The correlation between serum samples and DBS was evaluated using two commercial ELISA kits: SediaTM BED HIV-1 Incidence EIA (BED-Sedia) and Maxim HIV-1 Limiting Antigen Avidity (LAg-Avidity). Eight different RITAs were developed; all of them included serological assays. A combination of the variables viral load, antiretroviral therapy (ART) and CD4 count was used to build the RITAs. The sensitivity, specificity, Youden index, predictive positive value, predictive negative value, false recent rate (FRR) and false long-term rate were evaluated. Results: The correlations between serum samples and DBS were 0.990 and 0.867 for BED-Sedia and LAg-avidity, respectively. Using only serological assays, the Youden index was higher for LAg-avidity than BED-Sedia (82.1–83.0% versus 69.2–69.6%). The best RITA was ART-serology, which showed a Youden index of 91.2–93.9% and FRR of 1.8–2.2%. Conclusions: Using DBS samples to determine HIV incidence is a good tool for epidemiological surveillance. The RITA that included ART and serological tests (BED-Sedia or LAg-avidity) showed the highest sensitivity and specificity and a low FRR. Background: The Roussel Uclaf Causality Assessment Method (RUCAM) is a validated tool for assessing causality in cases of suspected drug-induced liver injury (DILI). However, RUCAM cannot discriminate between concomitant hepatotoxic drugs with the same temporal sequence.Objective: To analyse the utility of the lymphocyte transformation test (LTT) for assisting updated RUCAM in 45 patients and 40 controls with a clinical diagnosis of DILI.Methods: Suspected DILI cases were detected through the Prospective Pharmacovigilance Program from Laboratory Signals in Hospital (PPLSH) or by consultations. The controls completed the drug therapy with no adverse reactions during the study period. A receiver operating characteristics (ROC) curve analysis was performed to calculate the optimal cut-off value for the stimulation index (SI), corresponding to the largest sum for the specificity and sensitivity values of LTT for true DILI cases.Results: Out of 45 patients diagnosed with DILI, 42 cases were detected by the PPLSH, two cases by consultation and one case by both methods. Most DILI cases (64.4%) arose during hospitalization. According to the biochemical parameters, 24 cases (53.3%) had the hepatocellular phenotype, 14 (31.1%) had the cholestatic phenotype, and 7 cases (15.6%) had the mixed phenotype. Considering the severity criteria, 7 (15.5%) cases were classified as moderate DILI, and 4 (8.9%) were severe DILI; there were no fatal cases. A total of 149 drugs (median/case, 3; IQR, 2–5) were suspected to be involved in the DILI cases (RUCAM score ≥3). In 8 cases, only one drug was suspected, and polypharmacy (≥5 drugs) was identified in 29% of the cases. Of all DILI cases, 46 (30.9%) of the 149 suspected drugs produced positive LTT results, and the LTT was positive in 34 (75.5%) of the 45 patients. No exposed controls produced positive LTT results. The optimal cut-off of 1.95 for the SI was obtained with a sensitivity of 77% and specificity of 100% (area under the curve, 0.91; 95% asymptotic confidence interval 0.84–0.97; p < 0.001). The sensitivity of the hepatocellular phenotype was 92%.Conclusion: Our results demonstrate that LTT is an add on strengthening causality in cases of suspected idiosyncratic DILI, especially for patients with several suspected drugs and a hepatocellular phenotype.

Introducción: el lupus es una enfermedad compleja y varias veces de difícil abordaje. Alcanzar la remisión es uno de los objetivos, incorporando opciones terapéuticas. Objetivos: describir las características generales de los pacientes según el estado de la enfermedad y el uso de belimumab. Materiales y métodos: estudio de corte transversal, registro RELESSAR. Se definió el estado de la enfermedad como: remisión: SLEDAI=0 y sin corticoides; baja actividad de la enfermedad: SLEDAI >0 y ≤4 y sin corticoides; control no óptimo: SLEDAI >4 y cualquier dosis de corticoides. Resultados: se incluyeron 1.277 pacientes, 23,4% en remisión, 12,6% en baja actividad y 63,8% con control no óptimo. En este último grupo eran más jóvenes y con menor duración de la enfermedad; presentaban mayores índices de actividad y cronicidad, y mayor empleo de inmunosupresores. Solo el 22,3% de los pacientes con criterio potencial de uso de belimumab (lupus eritematoso sistémico activo a pesar del tratamiento estándar) lo recibía en ese momento. Las variables asociadas a hospitalizaciones fueron: terapia con corticoides, ciclofosfamida y mayor SLICC. Conclusiones: se refleja la complejidad del manejo de estos pacientes y se visualizan aspectos estructurales como la desigualdad. El uso del belimumab resultaría beneficioso en los pacientes seleccionados.

We assessed the occurrence, genetic diversity, and zoonotic potential of four protozoan (Cryptosporidium spp., Entamoeba histolytica, Entamoeba dispar, Giardia duodenalis), one stramenopile (Blastocystis sp.), one microsporidia (Enterocytozoon bieneusi), and two ciliate (Balantioides coli, Troglodytella abrassarti) intestinal parasite or commensal protist species in captive non-human primates (NHP) and their zookeepers from six European zoological gardens in France (n = 1), Germany (n = 1), and Spain (n = 4). Faecal samples from NHP (n = 454) belonging to 63 species within 35 genera and humans (n = 70) were collected at two sampling periods in each participating institution between October 2018-August 2021. Detection and species identification was accomplished by PCR and Sanger sequencing of the ssu rRNA and/or ITS genes. Sub-genotyping analyses using specific markers were conducted on isolates positive for G. duodenalis (gdh, bg, tpi) and Cryptosporidium spp. (gp60). Overall, 41.0% (186/454) and 30.0% (21/70) of the faecal samples of NHP and human origin tested positive for at least one intestinal protist species, respectively. In NHP, Blastocystis sp. was the most prevalent protist species found (20.3%), followed by G. duodenalis (18.1%), E. dispar (7.9%), B. coli and T. abrassarti (1.5% each), and Cryptosporidium spp. and E. bieneusi (0.9% each). Occurrence rates varied largely among NHP host species, sampling periods, and zoological institutions. The predominant protist species found in humans was Blastocystis sp. (25.7%), followed by Cryptosporidium spp. (2.9%), E. dispar (1.4%), and G. duodenalis (1.4%). Sequencing of PCR-positive amplicons in human and/or NHP confirmed the presence of Cryptosporidium in six isolates (C. hominis: 66.7%, C. parvum: 33.3%), G. duodenalis in 18 isolates (assemblage A: 16.7%, assemblage B: 83.3%), Blastocystis in 110 isolates (ST1:38.2%, ST2:11.8%, ST3: 18.2%, ST4: 9.1%, ST5: 17.3%, ST8: 2.7%, ST13: 0.9%), and E. bieneusi in four isolates (CM18: 75.0%, Type IV: 25.0%). Zoonotic transmission events involving Blastocystis ST1–ST4 were identified in four zoological institutions. Zoonotic transmission of C. hominis was highly suspected, but not fully demonstrated, in one of them. Monitoring of intestinal protist species might be useful for assessing health status of captive NHP and their zookeepers, and to identify transmission pathways of faecal-orally transmitted pathogens.

Objetivo: Estimar la frecuencia de percepción de discriminación y su asociación con estrés laboral, ansiedad y miedo al COVID-19 en médicos generales colombianos.Métodos: Estudio transversal que perteneciente al proyecto Dinámicas Psicosociales Universitarias, con aval institucional de la Universidad de Cartagena. Un grupo de médicos generales colombianos fue invitado por redes sociales a diligenciar, los primeros cinco días de abril de2020, un formulario de Google Forms© con preguntas sobre miedo y opiniones respecto al COVID-19 con las herramientas Test de Estrés Laboral, Generalized Anxiety Disorder y Fear of COVID-19 Scale. El estudio fue anónimo y voluntario con aceptación de términos y consentimiento informado. Para el análisis de la información se conformaron dos grupos: con percepción de discriminación y sin percepción de discriminación, según respuesta a la pregunta "Haber tenido percepción de discriminación por su condición de médico". Se realizó regresión logística entre percepción de discriminación con ansiedad, estrés laboral y miedo al COVID-19.Resultados: Participaron 531 médicos colombianos, la mitad entre 20-30 años; 207 (39 %) informaron percepción de discriminación. In this research, the types of hemicellulose that predominate in the leaves and tops of the three most cultivated varieties (CC 8475, CC 8592, V 7151) of sugarcane (Saccharum officinarum L.) in Valle del Cauca, Colombia were determined. Hemicellulose analyses were performed after delignification with sodium chlorite and extraction with 18% NaOH and 24% KOH containing 0.26 M NaBH4. The main components of hemicellulose were identified via FTIR and NMR spectroscopy, and monomeric sugars were identified via HPLC. Hemicellulose A composed of arabinoxylans, glucomannans and arabinogalactactans and hemicellulose B primarily composed of arabinoxylans were extracted. The hemicelluloses of the Colombian varieties were more stable against heat than those of the Venezuelan variety. The results of this project allowed discovery of the potential use of agricultural sugarcane residues for bioethanol production because they have a holocellulose content of more than 60%.

Background: Quarantine is a measure to control COVID-19 spread, resulting in an increased perception of loneliness. In turn, sleep disorders (SD) may be more frequently reported in uncertain circumstances. Objectives: To identify the association between loneliness and severe SD, in women quarantined due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods: A cross-sectional study carried out in women, between 40 and 79 years and living in Colombia. The women were invited through social network to complete 5 digital instruments: de Jong Gierveld Loneliness Scale, Menopause Rating Scale, Fear of COVID-19 Five-item Version, Coronavirus Anxiety Scale, and Francis Religion Scale. Bivariate analysis and adjusted logistic regression between loneliness and SD were performed. Results: 1133 women participated, half of them under 50 years old. 43.1% had emotional loneliness, 39.9% social loneliness and 43.3% general loneliness. SD were identified in 6 out of 10 women, those with mild SD presented an OR of 1.84, 1.85, and 1.64, for emotional, social and general loneliness, respectively. Loneliness was associated twice with moderate SD, and more than twice with severe SD. Very severe SD reached OR:5.81 for emotional loneliness, OR:4.38 social loneliness and OR:4.02 general loneliness. In the presence of religiosity, fear and anxiety due to COVID-19, statistical significance was retained for associations, except intense SD with general loneliness. Conclusions: SD were significantly associated with loneliness in our study population. It is important to assess sleep quality and perception of loneliness in middle-aged women, especially during periods of quarantine due to a pandemic to avoid health implications.

There are different indications for the placement of a pleural drainage. It is indicated in a massive pneumothorax or a pleural effusion, and a tunnelled indwelling pleural catheter is put in place. As in any procedure, complications may occur. A broken catheter is a rare one, and when it occurs, it has to be removed by thoracoscopic surgery. This article describes the first case of a removal of a fractured pleural catheter in a preterm newborn with a bilateral pneumothorax using interventional radiology. We propose an alternative way less invasive that could enable a shorter recovery time with fewer complications.

Antecedentes: La epilepsia es la discapacidad motora más frecuente en el mundo, contribuyendo de forma directa en la funcionalidad familiar y en la sobrecarga del cuidador primario. Objetivo: Determinar la asociación entre la funcionalidad familiar y la sobrecarga del cuidador en familias de pacientes pediátricos con epilepsia. Material y métodos: Estudio observacional y de corte transversal en 100 familias de pacientes pediátricos de entre 5 y 16 años de edad con diagnóstico de epilepsia, adscritos al Hospital General de Zona/ Unidad de Medicina Familiar 2, durante el 2019, a quienes se les aplicó el test de funcionalidad familiar FF-SIL y el test de Zarit al cuidador primario. Resultados: Se utilizó la prueba estadística de Chi cuadrada de Pearson, donde resultó el valor de p < 0.001, siendo estadísticamente significativa la asociación entre la funcionalidad familiar y la sobrecarga del cuidador primario. Conclusiones: Existe una asociación estadísticamente significativa entre la funcionalidad familiar y la sobrecarga del cuidador en familias de pacientes pediátricos con epilepsia.

Objective. To evaluate the effectiveness of a combined strategy of human papillomavirus virus (HPV) vaccination and high-risk HPV screening to reduce the occurrence of anogenital and oropharyngeal neoplasms among men who have sex with men, people with HIV, homeless people, transgender women, female sex workers and rape victims. Materials and methods. This mixed methods study evaluates the effectiveness of a combined vaccination-screening strategy to reduce HPV prevalence/incidence and occurrence of cervical intraepithelial neoplasms grade 2+ and/or anal intraepithelial neoplasms grade 2+, using Kaplan-Meier. The time-to-event method will evaluate time from positive results for specific anogenital HPV to incidence of anogenital lesions containing that HPV type. Results. People vaccinated against HPV and screened for HPV as a primary test will have lower prevalence and incidence of HPV infection and consequently lower fre­quency of HPV-related anogenital and oropharyngeal lesions. Conclusions. This study will generate scientific evidence on effectiveness of a combined vaccination-screening strategy to reduce the burden of HPV-associated neoplasms.
