The growing need for new and reliable surface sensing methods is arousing interest in the electromagnetic excitations of ultrathin films, i.e., to generate electromagnetic field distributions that resonantly interact with the most significant quasi-particles of condensed matter. In such a context, Bloch surface waves turned out to be a valid alternative to surface plasmon polaritons to implement high-sensitivity sensors in the visible spectral range. Only in the last few years, however, has their use been extended to infrared wavelengths, which represent a powerful tool for detecting and recognizing molecular species and crystalline structures. In this work, we demonstrate, by means of high-resolution reflectivity measurements, that a one-dimensional photonic crystal can sustain Bloch surface waves in the infrared spectral range from room temperature down to 10 K. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first demonstration of infrared Bloch surface waves at cryogenic temperatures. Furthermore, by exploiting the enhancement of the surface state and the high brilliance of infrared synchrotron radiation, we demonstrate that the proposed BSW-based sensor has a sensitivity on the order of 2.9 cm

We report on the design, fabrication, and spectroscopic characterization of a 1D Photonic Cristal (1DPC) sustaining Bloch Surface Waves (BSWs) in the mid-infrared. The reported all-dielectric 1DPC structure shows potential for label-free biosensing applications to medical diagnostics.

A structured catalyst for the dry reforming of methane (DRM) was investigated as a biogas pre-reformer for indirect internal reforming solid oxide fuel cell (IIR-SOFC). For this purpose, a NiCrAl open-cell foam was chosen as support and Ni-based samarium doped ceria (Ni-SmDC) as catalyst. Ni-SmDC powder is a highly performing catalyst showing a remarkable carbon resistance due to the presence of oxygen vacancies that promote coke gasification by CO2 activation. Ni-SmDC powder was deposited on the metallic support by wash-coating method. The metallic foam, the powder, and the structured catalyst were characterized by several techniques such as: N2 adsorption-desorption technique, X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM-EDX), focused ion beam (FIB), temperature programmed reduction (H2-TPR), and Raman spectroscopy. Catalytic tests were performed on structured catalysts to evaluate activity, selectivity, and stability at SOFC operating conditions.

In this work we shed light on the early stage of the chemical vapor deposition of graphene on Ge(001) surfaces. By a combined use of m-Raman and x-ray photoelectron spectroscopies, and scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy, we were able to individuate a carbon precursor phase to graphene nucleation which coexists with small graphene domains. This precursor phase is made of C aggregates with different size, shape and local ordering which are not fully sp(2) hybridized. In some atomic size regions these aggregates show a linear arrangement of atoms as well as the first signature of the hexagonal structure of graphene. The carbon precursor phase evolves in graphene domains through an ordering process, associated to a re-arrangement of the Ge surface morphology. This surface structuring represents the embryo stage of the hills-and-valleys faceting featured by the Ge(001) surface for longer deposition times, when the graphene domains coalesce to form a single layer graphene film. By tuning the growth parameters, we show that it is possible to drive the CVD synthesis of graphene on Ge(110) towards the formation of either ultrathin armchair nanoribbons or of continuous graphene films. The ribbons are aligned along specific high-symmetry directions of the Ge(110) surface and have a width of ~5 nm. Moreover, by merging spectroscopic and morphological information, we find that the quality of graphene films depends critically on the growth temperature improving significantly in a narrow range close to the Ge melting point. The abruptness of the temperature behavior observed indicates that achieving high-quality graphene is intimately connected to the quasi-liquid Ge layer formed close to 930 °C on the substrate. Being observed for diverse Ge orientations, this process, known as incomplete melting, is shown to be of general relevance for graphene synthesis on Ge, and explains why similar growth conditions present in literature lead to graphene of very diverse quality on these substrates.

In this work, the authors investigated MoO3 films with thickness between 30 nm and 1 μm grown at room temperature by solid phase deposition on polycrystalline Cu substrates. Atomic force microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and scanning tunneling microscopy revealed the presence of a homogenous MoO3 film with a “grainlike” morphology, while Raman spectroscopy showed an amorphous character of the film. Nanoindentation measurements evidenced a coating hardness and stiffness comparable with the copper substrate ones, while Auger electron spectroscopy, x-ray absorption spectroscopy, and secondary electron spectroscopy displayed a pure MoO3 stoichiometry and a work function ΦMoO3 = 6.5 eV, 1.8 eV higher than that of the Cu substrate. By combining scanning probe microscopy with Raman and x-ray photoelectron spectroscopies, we investigate the evolution of CVD-grown graphene/Ge(001) as a function of the deposition temperature in close proximity to the Ge melting point, highlighting an abrupt change of the graphene's quality, morphology, electronic properties and growth mode at 930 degrees. We attribute this discontinuity to the incomplete surface melting of the Ge substrate and show how incomplete melting explains a variety of diverse and long-debated peculiar features of the graphene/Ge(001), including the characteristic nanostructuring of the Ge substrate induced by graphene overgrowth. We find that the quasi-liquid Ge layer formed close to 930 degrees is fundamental to obtain high-quality graphene, while a temperature decrease of 10 degrees already results in a wrinkled and defective graphene film., in press

Herein, we report an impedimetric DNA-based aptamer sensor for a single-step detection of B. anthracis spore simulant (B. cereus spore). Specifically, we designed a miniaturized label-free aptasensor for B. cereus spores based on a gold screen-printed electrode functionalized with B. cereus spores-binding aptamer (BAS-6R). Several parameters were optimized to fabricate the aptasensor such as the concentration of DNA aptamer solution (0.5 µM), the time (48 h), the temperature (4 °C), and the pH (7.5) for aptamer immobilization on the working electrode surface. Once the aptasensor was developed, it was tested against B. cereus spores 14579 evaluating the effect of incubation time and MgCl2 concentration. Under the optimized conditions (incubation time equal to 3 h and absence of MgCl2), B. cereus spores 14579 were detected with a linear range between 104 CFU/ml and 5 × 106 CFU/ml and a detection limit of 3 × 103 CFU/ml. Furthermore, the study of selectivity toward B. cereus 11778, B. subtilis, Legionella pneumophila, and Salmonella Typhimurium has demonstrated the capability of this sensor to detect B. cereus spores, proving the suitability of the DNA-based sensing element combined with a portable instrument for a label-free measurement on site of B. anthracis spore simulant.

Label-free detection is a fashion manner to accomplish analysis in immunosensing field, owing to the possibility to avoid labelled antibody and enzymatic reaction time, as well. To develop a label-free immunosensor, the electrochemical impedance spectroscopy in combination with the bulk gold electrode is one of the most common approaches; however, the use of laboratory setup as well as the cost of gold bulk electrode hinders their widespread applications. Herein, we report a label-free impedimetric immunosensor based on the use of gold screen-printed electrodes for Salmonella Typhimurium, chosen as model analyte. With the aim to enhance the immunosensor electrochemical performances, different protocols were accomplished to pre-treat the working electrode surface used as platform to immobilise the immunological chain in a self-assembled monolayer configuration. Salmonella Typhimurium was detected with a linear range comprised between 10(3) and 10(7)CFU/mL, demonstrating the suitability of the treated gold-printed electrode combined with portable instrumentation as implemented electrochemical analytical tool for effective and in situ analysis.

Polymeric electrospun fibers are becoming popular in microbial biotechnology because of their exceptional physicochemical characteristics, biodegradability, surface-to-volume ratio, and compatibility with biological systems, which give them a great potential as microbial supports to be used in production processes or environmental applications. In this work, we analyzed and compared the ability of Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas putida, Brevundimonas diminuta, and Sphingobium fuliginis to develop biofilms on different types of polycaprolactone (PCL) microfibers. These bacterial species are relevant in the production of biobased chemicals, enzymes, and proteins for therapeutic use and bioremediation. The obtained results demonstrated that all selected species were able to attach efficiently to the PCL microfibers. Also, the ability of pure cultures of S. fuliginis (former Flavobacterium sp. ATCC 27551, a very relevant strain in the bioremediation of organophosphorus compounds) to form dense biofilms was observed for the first time, opening the possibility of new applications for this microorganism. This material showed to have a high microbial loading capacity, regardless of the mesh density and fiber diameter. A comparative analysis between PCL and polylactic acid (PLA) electrospun microfibers indicated that both surfaces have a similar bacterial loading capacity, but the former material showed higher resistance to microbial degradation than PLA., European Union’s H2020 research and innovation programme under the Marie Skłodowska-Curie grant agreement no. 691095. It has recently been shown that the relaxation time of a graphene sheet is the crucial parameter that governs the radiation performance in graphene THz antennas based on either plasmonic or nonplasmonic leaky waves. Moreover, the radiating properties of these devices have always been derived assuming an ideal dipole-like source, and no full-wave and experimental results on realistic feeders have been reported, yet. To this purpose, in this work we aim at bringing the designs of graphene-based Fabry-Perot cavity leaky-wave antennas (FPC-LWAs) towards an experimental stage. First, the antenna design is validated with full-wave simulations, by modeling not only the antenna structure, but also a realistic THz source, namely an open-ended waveguide. Another considerable difference with the previous designs is the use of a cylindrical geometry. As a result, the radiation patterns now exhibit a remarkable omnidirectionality over the azimuthal plane, as the beam is scannable from broadside up to 45°. Second, THz measurements are carried out to characterize graphene samples deposited over silicon substrates. The relaxation time is estimated by combining the transmittance measurements of a sample with well-established theoretical models for the graphene surface conductivity. These results shed several issues for the future developments of graphene-based FPC-LWAs.

We present here a correlative X-ray microscopy approach for quantitative single cell imaging of molar concentrations. By combining the elemental content provided by X-ray fluorescence microscopy and the morphology information extracted from X-ray phase nanotomography, we determine the intracellular molarity distributions. This correlative method was demonstrated on a freeze-dried human phagocytic cell to obtain the absolute elemental concentration maps of K, P, and Fe. The cell morphology results showed a very good agreement with atomic-force microscopy measurements. This work opens the way for non-destructive single cell chemical analysis down to the sub-cellular level using exclusively synchrotron radiation techniques. It will be of high interest in the case where it is difficult to access the morphology using atomic-force microscopy, for example, on frozen-hydrated cells or tissues.

International audience; A novel scanning probe tip made of heavily doped semiconductor is fabricated and used instead of standard gold-coated tips in infrared scattering-type near-field microscopy. Midinfrared near-field microscopy experiments are conducted on ZnO nanowires with a lateral resolution better than 100 nm, using tips made of heavily electron-doped germanium with a plasma frequency in the midinfrared (plasma wavelength of 9.5 μm). Nanowires embedded in a dielectric matrix are imaged at two wavelengths, 11.3 and 8.0 μm, above and below the plasma wavelength of the tips. An opposite sign of the imaging contrasts between the nanowire and the dielectric matrix is observed at the two infrared wavelengths, indicating a clear role of the free-electron plasma in the heavily doped germanium tip in building the imaging contrast. Electromagnetic simulations with a multispherical dipole model accounting for the finite size of the tip are well consistent with the experiments. By comparison of the simulated and measured imaging contrasts, an estimate for the local free-carrier density in the investigated ZnO nanowires in the low 10 19 cm −3 range is retrieved. The results are benchmarked against the scattering intensity and phase maps obtained on the same sample with a gold-coated probe tip in pseudoheterodyne detection mode.

Graphite conductive vertical microchannels, fabricated by femtosecond laser treatment, are proposed as distributed electrodes in defect-engineered (“black”) single-crystal diamond cathodes for innovative solar cells. Energy conversion is based on photon-enhanced thermionic emission, where the reduction of the cathode series resistance is crucial to preserve conversion efficiency. Process yield higher than 80% and resistivity as low as 0.75 ± 0.15 Ω cm were achieved by the optimization of laser parameters and the use of a multi-pass writing technique. A 100 × 100 array of graphite electrodes was integrated in a diamond-based cathode prototype, reducing the series resistance of more than 10 orders of magnitude with respect to bulk diamond.

We report a method that allows a complete quantitative characterization of whole single cells, assessing the total amount of carbon, nitrogen, oxygen, sodium, and magnesium and providing submicrometer maps of element molar concentration, cell density, mass, and volume. This approach allows quantifying elements down to 10(6) atoms/mu m(3). This result was obtained by applying a multimodal fusion approach that combines synchrotron radiation microscopy techniques with off-line atomic force microscopy. The method proposed permits us to find the element concentration in addition to the mass fraction and provides a deeper and more complete knowledge of cell composition. We performed measurements on LoVo human colon cancer cells sensitive (LoVo-S) and resistant (LoVo-R) to doxorubicin. The comparison of LoVo-S and LoVo-R revealed different patterns in the maps of Mg concentration with higher values within the nucleus in LoVo-R and in the perinuclear region in LoVo-S cells. This feature was not so evident for the other elements, suggesting that Mg compartmentalization could be a significant trait of the drug-resistant cells.

Elemental analysis of biological sample can give information about content and distribution of elements essential for human life or trace elements whose absence is the cause of abnormal biological function or development. However, biological systems contain an ensemble of cells with heterogeneous chemistry and elemental content; therefore, accurate characterization of samples with high cellular heterogeneity may only be achieved by analyzing single cells. Powerful methods in molecular biology are abundant, among them X-Ray microscopy based on synchrotron light source has gaining increasing attention thanks to its extremely sensitivity. However, reproducibility and repeatability of these measurements is one of the major obstacles in achieving a statistical significance in single cells population analysis. In this study, we compared the elemental content of human colon adenocarcinoma cells obtained by three distinct accesses to synchrotron radiation light.

Nano-scale devices based on zinc oxide (ZnO) are expected to be widely used as building-blocks of future innovative sensors due to outstanding properties of this semiconductive material including presence of a direct bandgap, piezoelectricity, pyroelectricity, biocompatibility. Zinc oxide nanostructures can be also conceived as ultra-high efficiency nanogenerators to harvest electrical energy from the strain vibrational energy in order to drive an array of nanosensors. In fact most applications are based on the cooperative and average response of a large number of ZnO elongated micro/nanostructures, such as wires, rods and pillars. In order to assess the quality of the materials and their performance it is fundamental to characterize and then accurately model the specific electrical and piezoelectric properties of single ZnO structures, in an integrated manner. In this paper, we report on the brittle-to-ductile transition that occurs when reducing the size down to the nanoscale, which has been rarely documented. Then we report on focused ion beam machined of high aspect ratio nanowires and pillars and their mechanical and electrical (by means of conductive atomic force microscopy) characterization. Finally, we present new simulation results concerning ZnO nanowires under lateral bending obtained through the classical approach and the finite element method. Here we use a new power-law design concepts to accurately model the relevant electrical and mechanical size-effects whose existence has been emphasized in recent reviews. (C) 2016 Elsevier B.V. Germanium is emerging as the substrate of choice for the growth of graphene in CMOS-compatible processes. For future application in next generation devices the accurate control over the properties of high-quality graphene synthesized on Ge surfaces, such as number of layers and domain size, is of paramount importance. Here we investigate the role of the process gas flows on the CVD growth of graphene on Ge(100). The quality and morphology of the deposited material is assessed by using mu-Raman spectroscopy, X-ray photo emission spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and atomic force microscopy. We find that by simply varying the carbon precursor flow different growth regimes yielding to graphene nanoribbons, graphene monolayer, and graphene multilayer are established. We identify the growth conditions yielding to a layer-by-layer growth regime and report on the achievement of homogeneous monolayer graphene with an average intensity ratio of 2D and G bands in the Raman map larger than 3.

ZnO is receiving a considerable attention for the development of novel cost-effective nanostructures with outstanding functional properties for applications in electronics and energy. In this paper, we investigate the effects of the nonlinear piezoelectricity, that has been recently observed in ZnO nanostructures, on the piezotronic effect of ZnO nanowires (NWs). We insert a physically-based model of the nonlinear direct piezoelectric effect into a fully-coupled thermo-mechanical-electric scheme to study the current-voltage characteristic of ZnO NWs under a purely vertical compressive/tensile strain. Our results show for the first time that the nonlinear piezoelectricity deeply affects the current transport processes inside the NW and the behavior of devices for piezoelectric-piezotronic applications and provides remarkable insights into the underlying physics. © 2002-2012 IEEE.

The biological function of a chemical element in cells not only requires the determination of its intracellular quantity, but also the spatial distribution of its concentration. Different strategies can be employed to quantify and map the intracellular concentration of elements in single cells. The assessment of the intracellular elemental concentration, which is the relevant information, requires the measurement of cell volume. This challenging and demanding task requires combining different techniques allowing gathering of both morphological and compositional information on the same cell. Moreover, the need to analyse samples more similar to their natural state requires complex hardware equipment, and supplementary efforts in preparation protocols. Nevertheless, the response to the question: "where is it and how much?" is worth all these efforts. This review aims at providing an insight into the recent and most advanced techniques and strategies for quantifying and mapping chemical elements in single cells. We describe and discuss indirect detection techniques (label based) which make use of fluorescent dyes, and direct ones (label free), such as particle induced X-ray emission, proton backscattering spectrometry, scanning transmission ion spectrometry, nano-secondary ion mass spectrometry, X-ray fluorescence microscopy, complemented by X-ray imaging.

We report a novel experimental approach to derive quantitative concentration map of light elements in whole cells by combining two complementary nano-probe methods: X-ray fluorescence microscopy (XRFM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM). The concentration is derived by normalizing point-by-point the elemental (here Mg) spatial distribution obtained by XRFM, by the thickness measured using AFM. The considerable difference between the elemental distribution and the concentration maps indicates that this procedure is essential to obtain reliable information on the role and function of elements in whole cells. The technique for assembling a uniform oxide line by overlapping a series of nanosized oxide dots induced by atomic force microscopy is analytically and experimentally investigated. In addition to the normal continuous (static) pulses, the oxide growth rates under various discontinuous (modulated) pluses are studied to quantify the overlapping effect under multiple pulses used by the assembling technique. In the analysis of the assembling technique, the superposition principle is used to predict the assembled profiles and to define the uniformity criteria. Experiments have been performed to demonstrate the analytical prediction, including the threshold or minimum pitch for forming uniform lines, and the onset pitch for the overlapping effect to be considered. Indeed, by following the uniformity criteria developed, uniform and reliable oxide lines can be obtained by overlapping oxide dots.

A simple compact temperature sensor and microheater in a wide temperature range has been developed, realizing a laser-patterned resistive structure on the surface of a synthetic polycrystalline diamond plate. Imaging and spectroscopy techniques used to investigate morphology, structure, and composition of the pattern showed that it incorporates different nondiamond carbon phases. Transport experiments revealed the semiconducting behavior of this microresistor. Thermal power measurements versus temperature are presented. A possible application of this device that may easily match compact experimental layouts avoiding both thermal anchoring offset and mechanical stress between sample and sensor is discussed. The patterned structure undergoes testing as a microthermometer, providing fast response and excellent stability versus time. It exhibits a good sensitivity that coupled to an easy calibration procedure minimizes errors and guarantees high accuracy. Plot of temperature versus input power of the resistive patterned line used as microheater shows a linear behavior in an extended temperature range.

Display Omitted Argon and oxygen plasma processes are used for controlled disruption of ferritin.XPS detection of Fe in ferritin film after plasma process was enhanced by ~10.XPS reveals the oxidation state of Fe in the ferritin core after the plasma etching. Ferritin is the main iron storage protein in living systems. Recent studies demonstrated that the chemical species present in the ferritin core and their chemical coordination can be different between physiological and pathological ferritin proteins. Therefore it is of paramount importance revealing the presence of metals other than iron and their oxidation state in the protein core.In this work we investigated and compared the use of argon and oxygen plasma processes for the erosion of the protein shell surrounding the mineral core, which is necessary for the chemical analysis of the ferritin core by surface sensitive technique such as X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. We find that both the proposed etching processes are effective in the disruption of the protein shell and in the exposure of the Fe inside the core of the molecules. Neither oxygen nor argon plasma induced significant artifacts in the samples nor produce dramatic roughening in the surface allowing for a controlled thinning of the ferritin film. In the plasma treated samples X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy detected the Fe(III) oxidation state of metal present inside the ferritin cavity.

Multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) were functionalized via oxidative polymerization of 3-3'(vinylcarbazole) (PVK). Thin films of PVK-functionalized MWNTs (PVK-MWNTs) were fabricated by the Langmuir-Schaefer (LS) technique and characterized by spectroscopic, microscopic, electrical and electrochemical techniques before and after doping with iodine. I/V characterization showed an increase in the conductivity of the PVK-MWNTs and I-2-doped PVK-MWNTs compared with the PVK and I-2-doped PVK, respectively. The electrochemical characterization showed the formation of an I-2-doped PVK-MWNT complex. These nanostructured PVK-MWNT films revealed an increase in the current density under illumination of about 500 nA cm(-2).

Micro- and nano-scale materials and systems based on zinc oxide are expected to explode in their applications in the electronics and photonics, including nano-arrays of addressable optoelectronic devices and sensors, due to their outstanding properties, including semiconductivity and the presence of a direct bandgap, piezoelectricity, pyroelectricity and biocompatibility. In this paper, we report on focused ion beam machined high aspect ratio nanowires and their mechanical and electrical (by means of conductive atomic force microscopy) characterization. Then, we investigate the suitability of new power-law design concepts to accurately model the relevant electrical and mechanical size-effects, whose existence has been emphasized in recent reviews.

An overview of three major nonconventional approaches in nanofabrication, scanning probe microscopy lithography, self-assembly, and imprint lithography, is presented. Typically, these nonconventional approaches are emerging technologies based on simple principles with potential cost-effective manufacturability, as compared to those conventional processes that are widely used and highly developed for making microelectronic circuits. Following the introduction of nonconventional technologies and their significances in nanofabrication, the details of each approach are presented. The lithographic applications of scanning probe microscopy, which involves three major variations: scanning tunneling microscopy, atomic force microscopy, and scanning near-field optical microscopy, are first evaluated with emphasis on their abilities in making structures with subnanoscale resolutions. The principles and processes for each technique are presented while their differences are also discussed. For the second approach, self-assembly, which uses a bottom-up fabrication strategy, is reported starting with an introduction of its basic principle. Self-assembly, with and without externally controlled forces for patterning nanoscale structures, is then examined. The associated principles and procedures of key assembling processes are presented. The third one, imprint lithography, is addressed with an emphasis on its recent progress and challenges. The nanolithographic abilities of different techniques developed using the general imprinting principle are examined. Finally, concluding remarks are provided to summarize the major technologies studied and to recommend the scopes for technology improvement and future research.

An easy method of incorporating TiO(2) nanoparticles into Nafion perfluorinated ionomer is proposed. Ultrathin films of Nafion were prepared by employing the Langmuir-Schaefer (LS) technique. The pressure-area isotherm study of a Langmuir monolayer of Nafion at the air-water interface on different concentrations of NaCl as the subphase allowed us to find the best experimental conditions for the deposition of stable Langmuir-Schaefer films. Incorporation of TiO(2) nanoparticles was performed by dipping Nafion LS films in a solution of TiO(2) nanoparticles. The uniformity of the TiO(2) incorporation was detected by UV-visible spectroscopy. The morphology of the Nafion, Nafion/TiO(2) nanoparticles thin films, and the changes due to the annealing procedure were investigated by atomic force microscopy. Interestingly, the AFM investigation showed that Nafion and Nafion/TiO(2) LS films have thermal stability up to 600 degrees C.

We propose the implementation of graphene-based field effect transistor (FET) as radiation sensor. In the proposed detector, graphene obtained via chemical vapor deposition is integrated into a Si-based field effect device as the gate readout electrode, able to sense any change in the field distribution induced by ionization in the underneath absorber, because of the strong variation in the graphene conductivity close to the charge neutrality point. Different 2-dimensional layered materials can be envisaged in this kind of device.

Langmuir–Schaefer (LS) films of poly(ortho-anisidine) (POAS) were fabricated by utilizing water and water acidified HCl as subphases, respectively. The uniformity of the films formation and the doping with Nafion were verified by UV–Vis spectroscopy. The morphology and the thickness of the POAS, HCl post-doping POAS and Nafion post-doping POAS LS films were investigated using atomic force microscopy. The electrochemical properties of POAS LS films, HCl post-doping POAS and Nafion post-doping POAS were investigated and compared with our previously published work. The electrochemical switching time of HCl post-doping POAS and Nafion post-doping POAS LS films were also estimated. This work reports on the production of ultrathin films of biologically functional macromolecules with patterns in the nano to micrometer range and nanometric resolution. This technology is of importance in the quickly developing fields of bioelectronics and molecular electronics. The technique used to immobilize biological molecules in thin uniform films is based on pulsed laser vaporization/ionization of a frozen aqueous solution in a high vacuum vessel. Ionized molecules are then driven to the substrate surface by applied electric fields. Patterning is obtained by electron beam lithography and lift-off. AFM characterization of the films reveals highly uniform near monolayers with nanometric features. The samples are invariably biologically active; comparison with enzymatic reaction kinetics of known concentration solutions gives us a percentage of active molecules in the range of 10-30%. This is sufficient for the production of highly integrated bioelectronic devices.

In this paper we present design, fabrication and characterization of Schottky terahertz diodes. The diode is based on a Ti/n-GaAs junction with very low junction capacitance. T-gate technology, based on trilayer of electronic resists and electron-beam lithography, and air-bridge technique have been used to obtain Schottky diodes with cutoff frequency in the THz range. The device fabrication process is fully planar and suitable for integration in monolithic arrays for active spectroscopic imaging.

The charge transport in zinc-oxide piezosemiconductive nanowires under purely vertical compressive or tensile strains is investigated. For simplicity, only the additional band bending originated by the piezoelectric charges has been accounted for. Moreover, a constant volumetric piezoelectric charge density is assumed, distributed within a maximum distance $\delta_{\rm piezo}$ from the two junctions between the metal ends and the nanowire. Examples demonstrate that the carrier concentration, the energy conduction band profile, and the current–voltage characteristics significantly depend on $\delta_{\rm piezo}$. Therefore, we propose the use of current–voltage measurements to obtain information on $\delta_{\rm piezo}$ in strained piezosemiconductors.

The piezoelectric performance of ultra-strength ZnO nanowires (NWs) depends on the subtle interplay between electrical and mechanical size-effects. "Size-dependent" modeling of compressed NWs illustrates why experimentally observed mechanical stiffening can indeed collide with electrical size-effects when the size shrinks, thereby lowering the actual piezoelectric function from bulk estimates. "Smaller" is not necessarily "better" in nanotechnology. (Figure Presented).
