1. Inflorescence Yield, Essential Oil Composition and Antioxidant Activity of Cannabis sativa L. cv ‘Futura 75’ in a Multilocation and On-Farm Study

Abstract

Industrial hemp (Cannabis sativa L.), being a multiharvest crop, can increase farm profitability and cropping system diversification, including in marginal areas. Since inflorescence essential oil (EO) represents a valuable co-product for cosmetics and pharmaceutical sectors, the aim of this study was to assess the effect of pedoclimatic conditions on the inflorescence yield. EO content, composition and antioxidant capacity of the monoecious variety ‘Futura 75’. So, on-farm trials were performed in central Italy at three sites (SL, LA and SPG), which differed in terms of soil (taxonomic classes; chemical and physical characteristics), microclimate conditions (rainfall and air temperatures) and agricultural value. The results highlighted how location specificities significantly influence crop performance. Strong differences in productive parameters were observed among the farms, with inflorescence yields ranging from 1.3 to 4.9 Mg ha−1, mainly depending on the differences between the maximum and minimum air temperatures (ΔT) since negative correlations were found. Similarly, the concentration of monoterpene and sesquiterpene hydrocarbons showed a reduction when ΔT during the studied period was higher; conversely, oxygenated sesquiterpenes showed an increment due to a higher ΔT. Only phenylpropanoids were affected by rainfall, showing a positive correlation. All these findings confirm that in hemp, satisfactory productions can be reached only by matching territorial suitability. The variability in EO’s characteristics suggests, in fact, that the “uniqueness” of the EOs derives from a combination of the pedological, climatic and agronomic variables of each site.

Abstract

COVID-19 is a respiratory illness caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) and declared by the World Health Organization a global public health emergency. Among the severe outbreaks across South America, Uruguay has become known for curtailing SARS-CoV-2 exceptionally well. To understand the SARS-CoV-2 introductions, local transmissions, and associations with genomic and clinical parameters in Uruguay, we sequenced the viral genomes of 44 outpatients and inpatients in a private healthcare system in its capital, Montevideo, from March to May 2020. We performed a phylogeographic analysis using sequences from our cohort and other studies that indicate a minimum of 23 independent introductions into Uruguay, resulting in five major transmission clusters. Our data suggest that most introductions resulting in chains of transmission originate from other South American countries, with the earliest seeding of the virus in late February 2020, weeks before the borders were closed to all non-citizens and a partial lockdown implemented. Genetic analyses suggest a dominance of S and G clades (G, GH, GR) that make up >90% of the viral strains in our study. Abstract

Contrary to humans, candidiasis is a rare infection in animals. However, in reptiles, candidiasis can cause gastrointestinal, cutaneous, or rarely systemic infections in stressed animals. The infections due to Yarrowia lipolytica have been increasingly described in human medicine, and hundreds of cases are reported, comprised of granulomatous lung lesions. Herein, granulomatous pneumonia of a spectacled caiman, Caiman crocodilus, was described, and the presence of Y. lipolytica in the lesion was confirmed through histopathology, microbiologic cultures, and molecular methods. The cause of death of the spectacled caiman was ascribed to bacterial shock septicemia consequentially to a traumatic lesion. However, in the right lung, several nodules containing white exudate were evidenced. At mycological and molecular analyses, Y. lipolytica was evidenced, and the histological finding confirmed the presence of a Candida infection in the lung granulomatous lesions. The comparison of ITS sequences with 11 Yarrowia spp. isolates, recently described in green sea turtles, and with a human strain was conducted, and the whole genome of a strain isolated in the spectacled caiman was sequenced. Even though Y. lipolytica is considered a non-pathogenic yeast and has been rarely described in animals, it seems to cause granulomatous lesions in reptiles as in humans.

Abstract

The European hedgehog is a synanthropic mammal, widely distributed in Europe. This species usually inhabits the edges of deciduous or mixed woods, but it is also very common in private gardens and public parks. Despite its popularity and frequency of contacts both with humans and with wild and domestic animals, few studies have examined the endoparasitic fauna of the hedgehog in Italy. In the present study, endoparasites of naturally deceased hedgehogs (n = 40) from central Italy (Latium and Tuscany regions) were investigated, along with concurrent gross and histopathological lesions. The most prevalent identified endoparasites were Crenosoma striatum (45%), Capillaria erinacei (42.5%) and Brachylaemus erinacei (22.5%), in accordance with previous reports from hedgehogs in southern Italy. In few subjects, Physaloptera clausa, Acanthocephalans and Cystoisospora rastegaeivae coccidia were also identified. The infection by the lungworm C. striatum was found to be significantly associated (p < 0.01) with bronchial hyperplasia and peribronchiolitis upon histopathological examination. Awareness of the most common parasitic infections in the hedgehog and of their effects on the health of these animals is extremely important, especially in wildlife rescue centers, where European hedgehog represents the most frequently hospitalized mammal species.

Abstract

The analysis of antimicrobial use (AMU) data in livestock allows for the identification of risk factors for AMU, thereby favoring the application of responsible AMU policies on-farm. Herewith, AMU in 36 finishing pig farms in northern Italy from 2015−2017 was expressed as defined daily doses for Italian pigs (DDDita) per population correction unit (DDDita/100kg). A retrospective analysis was then conducted to determine the effects of several husbandry practices on AMU. Overall, AMU ranged between 12 DDDita/100kg in 2015 and 8 DDDita/100kg in 2017, showing no significant trends, due to the large variability in AMU between farms. However, a 66% AMU reduction was observed in 19 farms during 2015-2017. Farm size, number of farm workers, air quality, average pig mortality, and presence of undocked pigs on the farm had no significant effects on AMU. Rather, welfare-friendly farms had 38% lower AMU levels (p < 0.05). In conclusion, animal welfare management seems to be relatively more important than farm structure and other managerial characteristics as drivers of AMU in finishing pig farms.

Abstract

In spite of their favourable chemical characteristics, using AB5 alloys as fixed bed for hydrogen storage devices requires proper management of a number of technological aspects. Among these, the mechanical stability of metal particle grains under hydrogen cycling and the overall thermal conductivity of the material bed constitute crucial features. We developed by High Energy Ball Milling HEBM a mechanically stable silica-based AB5 composite with enhanced thermal conductivity. Here, focusing on the material’s physical-chemical properties, we report on the silica-AB5 composite development and characterization. Particularly, we studied the material consolidation process, the resulting composite morphology and the system behaviour under hydrogen loading/unloading cycling.

Abstract

On August 14th 1996, the opening ceremony of the Amsterdam ArenA took place; the first stadium intended to be a multifunctional structure, a place where to host a wide variety of events, with a highway passing underneath the pitch and with a sliding roof. The Amsterdam ArenA case represents a successful example of private-public partnership. A win-win solution has brought benefits to both parties. In today’s competitive global markets, the event itself is no longer sufficient to motivate consumers to pay expensive tickets and parking fees. To be worthwhile, spectators expect to be immersed in an experience. AFC Ajax remains the stadium’s anchor tenant, Nevertheless the Amsterdam ArenA case also demonstrates the role that a stadium can play as a catalyst for urban renewal.

Abstract

The identification of high-risk patients in the early stages of infected pancreatic necrosis (IPN) is critical, because it could help the clinicians to adopt more effective management strategies. We conducted a post hoc analysis of the MANCTRA-1 international study to assess the association between clinical risk factors and mortality among adult patients with IPN. Univariable and multivariable logistic regression models were used to identify prognostic factors of mortality. We identified 247 consecutive patients with IPN hospitalised between January 2019 and December 2020. History of uncontrolled arterial hypertension (p = 0.032; 95% CI 1.135–15.882; aOR 4.245), qSOFA (p = 0.005; 95% CI 1.359–5.879; aOR 2.828), renal failure (p = 0.022; 95% CI 1.138–5.442; aOR 2.489), and haemodynamic failure (p = 0.018; 95% CI 1.184–5.978; aOR 2.661), were identified as independent predictors of mortality in IPN patients. Cholangitis (p = 0.003; 95% CI 1.598–9.930; aOR 3.983), abdominal compartment syndrome (p = 0.032; 95% CI 1.090–6.967; aOR 2.735), and gastrointestinal/intra-abdominal bleeding (p = 0.009; 95% CI 1.286–5.712; aOR 2.710) were independently associated with the risk of mortality. Upfront open surgical necrosectomy was strongly associated with the risk of mortality (p p = 0.018; 95% CI 0.138–0.834; aOR 0.339) and enteral nutrition (p = 0.003; 95% CI 0.143–0.716; aOR 0.320) were found as protective factors. Organ failure, acute cholangitis, and upfront open surgical necrosectomy were the most significant predictors of mortality. Our study confirmed that, even in a subgroup of particularly ill patients such as those with IPN, upfront open surgery should be avoided as much as possible. Abstract

Antimicrobials have been widely used in poultry, promoting antimicrobial resistance (AMR) emergence and spread. Resistant bacteria selected by antimicrobial use (AMU) can contaminate the farm environment and transfer resistance genes to other bacteria, providing opportunities for persistence and (re-)colonization of subsequent flocks and potentially jeopardizing antimicrobial treatments. We investigated the effects of AMU on AMR in poultry in the long-term (due to historical AMU in the farm) and in the short-term (due to current AMU in a flock). Litter samples from 35 broiler and 35 turkey farms in North-East Italy were sampled longitudinally for AMR testing of E. coli indicator bacteria in 2019/2020. Differences in AMR as a function of historical AMU (Defined Daily Doses in 2016-2018), current AMU in the sampled flock, farm size and season were tested using Generalized Estimating Equation regression analysis. In both broilers and turkeys, the highest resistance levels were observed for sulfamethoxazole (>70%), followed by ampicillin (54-60%). Only few positive associations between historical levels of penicillin use and the specific resistance levels to penicillin in broiler farms, and the overall historical AMU and resistance to trimethoprim in turkey flocks, were significant. Current AMU showed significant effects on resistance to sulfamethoxazole, trimethoprim, ciprofloxacin and tetracycline in turkey flocks. Significant effects of farm size on some AMR levels were also identified. We found a stronger association between current AMU and AMR compared to historical AMU and AMR. AMR persistence in the farm environment in absence of direct AMU pressure needs to be further investigated.

Abstract

Freedom of religion or belief is a fundamental right recognized in all the international acts concerning human rights. This contribution investigates the content and the contours of this right considering the interpretative and applicative acts adopted by those international organs called to clarify and apply the right. In particular, it considers the activity of the Human Rights Committee and of the Special Rapporteur on Freedom of Religion and Belief, and the case-law of the European Court of Human Rights. The analysis focuses on both dimensions of the right: the right to adopt, change and renounce to one’s religion, further enriched by the prohibition on forcing others to believe or not; and the right to manifest one’s religion, with the addition of the prohibition on requiring people to reveal their beliefs.

Abstract

This contribution is devoted to enquiring the status of religious freedom in the different regional human rights protection systems. Though the amount of practice produced under the auspices of the European Court of Human Rights appears to be quantitatively more significant as well as qualitatively more articulated than other regional systems’ practice, a more careful scrutiny of the case-law of the Interamerican Court and Commission, on the one hand, and of the African Commission especially, on the other, reveals that the contribution of those mechanisms is just as interesting as the European case-law. Other regional human rights catalogues, such as the Arab Charter or the ASEAN Declaration, are also considered in so far as, though not yet accompanied by a properly jurisdictional human rights machinery, both nonetheless expressly provide for religious freedom. A comparative analysis of the relevant provisions and case-law of each system is thus performed and, based on the results, some tentative observations on current trends and future perspectives are formulated.

Abstract

Background/objectives: Reports about the implementation of recommendations from acute pancreatitis guidelines are scant. This study aimed to evaluate, on a patient-data basis, the contemporary practice patterns of management of biliary acute pancreatitis and to compare these practices with the recommendations by the most updated guidelines. Methods: All consecutive patients admitted to any of the 150 participating general surgery (GS), hepatopancreatobiliary surgery (HPB), internal medicine (IM) and gastroenterology (GA) departments with a diagnosis of biliary acute pancreatitis between 01/01/2019 and 31/12/2020 were included in the study. Categorical data were reported as percentages representing the proportion of all study patients or different and well-defined cohorts for each variable. Continuous data were expressed as mean and standard deviation. Differences between the compliance obtained in the four different subgroups were compared using the Mann-Whitney U, Student's t, ANOVA or Kruskal-Wallis tests for continuous data, and the Chi-square test or the Fisher's exact test for categorical data. Results: Complete data were available for 5275 patients. The most commonly discordant gaps between daily clinical practice and recommendations included the optimal timing for the index CT scan (6.1%, χ2 6.71, P = 0.081), use of prophylactic antibiotics (44.2%, χ2 221.05, P < 0.00001), early enteral feeding (33.2%, χ2 11.51, P = 0.009), and the implementation of early cholecystectomy strategies (29%, χ2 354.64, P < 0.00001), with wide variability based on the admitting speciality. Conclusions: The results of this study showed an overall poor compliance with evidence-based guidelines in the management of ABP, with wide variability based on the admitting speciality. Abstract

Simple Summary The European hedgehog is a very common animal in Europe. This animal usually lives in woods but often it is possible to find it in gardens and parks in urban areas. Few studies describe parasites infecting the European hedgehog in Italy. In the present study, endoparasite infections and associated lesions were investigated in hedgehogs from two different regions of central Italy (Latium and Tuscany), where no investigations had been performed before. Several helminth and protozoan species were identified in the intestine and respiratory tract of the animals analyzed. The presence of the respiratory worm Crenosoma striatum was found to be associated with bronchial lesions. This study contributed to the knowledge of parasitic infections of the European hedgehog, the most frequently hospitalized animal in wildlife rescue centers. Abstract The European hedgehog is a synanthropic mammal, widely distributed in Europe. This species usually inhabits the edges of deciduous or mixed woods, but it is also very common in private gardens and public parks. Despite its popularity and frequency of contacts both with humans and with wild and domestic animals, few studies have examined the endoparasitic fauna of the hedgehog in Italy. In the present study, endoparasites of naturally deceased hedgehogs (n = 40) from central Italy (Latium and Tuscany regions) were investigated, along with concurrent gross and histopathological lesions. The most prevalent identified endoparasites were Crenosoma striatum (45%), Capillaria erinacei (42.5%) and Brachylaemus erinacei (22.5%), in accordance with previous reports from hedgehogs in southern Italy. In few subjects, Physaloptera clausa, Acanthocephalans and Cystoisospora rastegaeivae coccidia were also identified. The infection by the lungworm C. striatum was found to be significantly associated (p < 0.01) with bronchial hyperplasia and peribronchiolitis upon histopathological examination. Awareness of the most common parasitic infections in the hedgehog and of their effects on the health of these animals is extremely important, especially in wildlife rescue centers, where European hedgehog represents the most frequently hospitalized mammal species.

Abstract

COVID-19 is a respiratory illness caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) and declared by the World Health Organization a global public health emergency. Among the severe outbreaks across South America, Uruguay has become known for curtailing SARS-CoV-2 exceptionally well. To understand the SARS-CoV-2 introductions, local transmissions, and associations with genomic and clinical parameters in Uruguay, we sequenced the viral genomes of 44 outpatients and inpatients in a private healthcare system in its capital, Montevideo, from March to May 2020. We performed a phylogeographic analysis using sequences from our cohort and other studies that indicate a minimum of 23 independent introductions into Uruguay, resulting in five major transmission clusters. Our data suggest that most introductions resulting in chains of transmission originate from other South American countries, with the earliest seeding of the virus in late February 2020, weeks before the borders were closed to all non-citizens and a partial lockdown implemented. Genetic analyses suggest a dominance of S and G clades (G, GH, GR) that make up >90% of the viral strains in our study. In our cohort, lethal outcome of SARS-CoV-2 infection significantly correlated with arterial hypertension, kidney failure, and ICU admission (FDR < 0.01), but not with any mutation in a structural or non-structural protein, such as the spike D614G mutation. Abstract

Lo scopo di questo contributo è fornire una breve analisi dell’attuale rapporto tra Unione ed organizzazioni religiose, soffermandosi in particolare sul dialogo tra l’Unione e le organizzazioni cattoliche., The EU legal order acknowledges the identity of religious communities and their specific contribution to the cause of European integration. For this reason, Article 17(3) TFEU commits the Union to maintain an open, transparent and regular dialogue with churches and religious organisations. This contribution analyses the meaning of this provision by clarifying the object, characteristics and purposes of such dialogue. Consequently, it takes into consideration how the relationship between the Union and religious organisations has been developed in concrete over the past years. Indeed, while the EU legal order has recognised the specificity of religious organisations and their mission, the latter have given an important contribution to the shaping of European policies and the advancement of the Union. Particular attention is paid to the role of Catholic institutions and associations.

Abstract

Despite the worldwide dramatic spread of religious-based discriminations, persecutions, and conflicts, both official data and academic literature have underestimated their role as a root cause of contemporary migrations. This multidisciplinary study aims to overcome this gap. Through an unprecedented collection of theoretical analysis and original empirical evidence, the book provides unique data and insights on the role of religion in the trajectories of asylum seekers and migrants – from the analysis of the religious geography of sending countries to the role of spirituality as a factor of resilience and adaptation. By enhancing both academic and political debate on these issues, the book offers the possibility of regaining awareness of the close link between religious freedom and the quality of democracy.

Abstract

Freedom of religion is a fundamental right recognized in many acts within international and European law. It includes the right for everyone to have, to change and to manifest his religion. Serious violations of this right could be ascertained as a form of persecution giving rise to the right, for those who escape from places where this right is not respected, to obtain the recognition of the status of refugee, according to the Geneva Convention of 1951, and to the EU directive 2011/95/EU concerning the recognition of an international protection for refugees. The goal of this contribution is to verify the relationship between the right to freedom of religion and of the status of refugee considering, in particular, the applications of these institutes given by the international judicial and quasi-judicial organs.

Abstract

Il volume intende fornire un panorama chiaro e organico del quadro istituzionale e dei caratteri fondamentali dell’ordinamento giuridico dell’Unione europea, rendendo conto in particolare delle novità normative e giurisprudenziali dell’ultimo decennio. Nei primi capitoli, dopo avere illustrato le principali tappe del processo d’integrazione e l’assetto attuale dell’Unione europea, con i principi che ne stanno a fondamento, vengono puntualmente analizzati il quadro istituzionale e le modalità di esercizio delle funzioni attribuite alle istituzioni politiche. I successivi capitoli si concentrano sulle fonti, i caratteri e gli effetti dell’ordinamento giuridico dell’Unione, sulle competenze della Corte di giustizia e sui rapporti tra l’ordinamento dell’Unione e quello italiano (con uno specifico paragrafo dedicato al recente e importante caso “Taricco”). Conclude la trattazione l’esame dei principali aspetti istituzionali dell’azione esterna dell’Unione.

Abstract

In spite of their favourable chemical characteristics, using AB5 alloys as fixed bed for hydrogen storage devices requires proper management of a number of technological aspects. Among these, the mechanical stability of metal particle grains under hydrogen cycling and the overall thermal conductivity of the material bed constitute crucial features. We developed by High Energy Ball Milling HEBM a mechanically stable silica-based AB5 composite with enhanced thermal conductivity. Here, focusing on the material’s physical-chemical properties, we report on the silica-AB5 composite development and characterization. Particularly, we studied the material consolidation process, the resulting composite morphology and the system behaviour under hydrogen loading/unloading cycling.

Abstract

Luigi Nono's early spatial works with tape are characterized by strong political commitment as well as by compositional devices and performance solutions that reflect the composer's involvement with technology and theatrical practices after his detachment from Darmstadt in the late 1950s. Looking at the tape works composed between 1961 and 1969, the article outlines the development of Luigi Nono's unique spatial practice, its theatrical influences and the dramaturgical implications. The analysis is centred on the composer's use of acoustic space as a conveyor of meaning designed to stimulate active and critical audience engagement. Particular emphasis is thus placed on the use of tape and amplification in performance, introducing notions such as ‘doubling’, ‘con-fusion’, fragmentation, non-linearity, simultaneity and multiplicity, which inform Nono's vision of space and are essential for a serious understanding of the composer's engaged spatial aesthetic.

Abstract

Investigation of the feasibility of the thermochemical two-step water splitting cycle based on MnFe 2 0 4 /Na 2 CO 3 system is reported. Influence of temperature and carbon dioxide pressure on the oxygen-releasing step was investigated. XRD analysis was applied to obtain phase identification of reacted powders at investigated experimental conditions. Different sodium sub-stoichiometric Na 1―δ (Mn 1/3 Fe 2/3 )O 2―δ/2 compounds were observed and their structure determined by using Rietveld analysis. Selected experimental conditions permitted to define a T/p CO2 phase diagram, showing different solid phases coexistence regions. Experimental conditions that permit complete regeneration of the initial MnFe 2 O 9 /Na 2 CO 3 mixture were identified (field I in the reported diagram), demonstrating the possibility of full chemical cyclical operation of the system.

Abstract

Aims Despite not being uncommon, limited evidence exists about predisposing factors for venous obstruction in patients with implantable electronic devices. We aimed to assess the prevalence of severe venous obstruction in patients with intravenous devices and identify predictor factors. Methods and results A total of 184 patients underwent venography to detect venous obstruction associated with the inserted lead. Vessel obstruction was graded as venous occlusion (complete flow interruption), severe obstruction (narrowing >90%), or mild–moderate obstruction (narrowing 50–90%). Severe venous obstruction/occlusion prevalence was 11.4% ( n = 21) and was always asymptomatic. Collateral circulation was found in 80.9% of patients with severe obstruction/occlusion. Twelve patients (6.5%) had 3 leads. The rates of patients with secondary prevention of sudden cardiac death as indication for implantable devices and of those of patients with 3 leads were significantly greater in the group with severe obstruction/occlusion than in the non-severe obstruction/occlusion group (respectively, P = 0.004 and P = 0.03). Logistic analysis adjusted for venous thromboembolic risk factors confirmed that secondary prevention of sudden cardiac death as indication for implantable devices [odds ratio (OR), 7.1; 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.4–35.3; P = 0.017] and the presence of 3 leads (OR, 8.5; 95% CI: 1.75–41.35; P = 0.008) were predictors of severe obstruction/occlusion. Conclusion In patients with implantable devices, severe venous obstruction prevalence is not negligible and the lack of symptoms does not exclude it. The presence of three leads and sudden cardiac death as indication for implantable devices seem to be associated with the presence of severe venous obstruction/occlusion.

27. La revisione della disciplina dei novel foods tra tutela di interessi generali e obiettivi economici

Abstract

L’articolo ha per oggetto la revisione della normativa europea sui c.d. novel foods, originariamente adottata nel 1997 con il regolamento 258/97. Dopo un esame delle principali criticità di quel regolamento, esso si concentra sul nuovo regolamento 2015/2283, che si applicherà a decorrere dal 1° gennaio 2018. Vengono in particolare approfonditi tre aspetti di quest’ultimo regolamento: (i) la definizione di nuovo alimento; (ii) la procedura centralizzata di autorizzazione e il correlato regime di tutela dei dati; (iii) lo speciale regime per gli alimenti tradizionali di Paesi terzi. Tale esame induce alla conclusione che la nuova disciplina realizza un migliore equilibrio tra la protezione della salute umana e degli interessi dei consumatori, da un lato, e gli interessi degli operatori del settore alimentare, dall’altro, e dunque dovrebbe stimolare le attività di ricerca e sviluppo da parte dell’industria alimentare. Al contrario, le disposizioni riguardanti i prodotti tradizionali di Paesi terzi non paiono del tutto coerenti con l’obiettivo di agevolare la loro immissione sul mercato europeo., The article deals with the reform of the EU legislation on novel foods, originally adopted in 1997 through Regulation 258/97. After identifying the main weaknesses of that Regulation, it focuses on the new Regulation 2015/2283, which shall apply from 1 January 2018. Three main aspects of the new Regulation are examined: (i) the definition of novel food; (ii) the centralized authorization procedure and the related data protection regime; (iii) the specific rules for traditional foods from third countries. The conclusion is that the new Regulation strikes a better balance than the original one between the protection of human health and consumers’ interests, on the one hand, and the interests of food business operators, on the other, and thus should stimulate research and development within the food industry. On the contrary, the rules for traditional foods from third countries do not seem perfectly fit for the stated purpose of facilitating the placing of such foods on the Union market.

Abstract

It is shown that graphite is converted into an high disordered carbon black by prolonged ball milling. The kinetics of this transformation has been followed by powder x‐ray diffraction, measurements of the crystallinity and of the surface area. Ball milling is able to introduce an high concentration of defective sites in the pristine graphite including the fullerene‐like structures. By mixing with natural rubber both the pristine and the ball‐milled graphite, it is shown by bound rubber measurements that the amount of rubber grafted (chemically linked) on the pristine graphite surface is negligible but reaches a very high level in the ball‐milled graphite. Similarly, ball‐milling of N660 carbon black causes a deep activation of its surface activity which can be measured by a significant increase in the bound rubber level and in the amount of grafted rubber in comparison to the pristine N660 sample. Abstract

In this work the interaction between the carbon black reinforcement agent and a polymeric rubber matrix is investigated. Chemical activity of carbon black powder samples was enhanced using γ radiation in the dose range 168–1000 kGy and the radiation induced free radical concentration was investigated by EPR measurements. Activated powder samples were mixed with rubber and the bound rubber values of obtained compounds was measured by TG analysis. A comparison between EPR and bound rubber data shows that the greatest filler–polymer chemical interaction corresponds to the highest radiation induced free radical concentration.

Abstract

Physico-chemical equilibria that influence oxide powders' precipitation from an aqueous solution can be substantially altered when the process is carried out in a microemulsion system. To obtain nanosized MnFe2O4 and gain information about the physico-chemical characteristics of products, Mn2+ and Fe3+ metal ions were induced to precipitate in a toluene/water/sodium dodecylbenzenesulfonate microemulsion system. Portions of the precipitated powder were differently treated, both in solution and in the solid state, and the role of restricted aqueous domains in the obtained materials was investigated. X-ray diffraction profile-fitting methods and chemical analysis were applied to characterize the powder particles. Samples obtained from the selected microemulsion were identified as nanosized mixed hydroxide compounds. A low metal content and a limited matter exchange among aqueous nanodroplets appear to inhibit hydroxide to oxide transformation inside the selected micellar system. A calcination process of precipitated powder was required to obtain a manganese ferrite compound.

Abstract

La disinfestazione dei prodotti agricoli essiccati (frutta secca, cereali, thé, caffè, camomilla, tabacco ecc.), mediante fumigazione con fosfina, rappresenta una pratica ampiamente adoperata. Tale processo è realizzato mediante l’utilizzo di formulati a base di Fosfuro di Magnesio o Fosfuro di Alluminio, in forma di pelletts. Questi formulati, nelle normali condizioni di uso, reagiscono con l’umidità dell’aria, generando fosfina allo stato gassoso, dotata di una elevata azione disinfestante. I pelletts, durante l’esposizione all'aria, sfioriscono generando un sottile residuo polverulento che ostacolando la diffusione dell'umidità atmosferica, rallenta la reazione per la produzione di fosfina. Per questo motivo, dopo il normale periodo di fumigazione di cinque giorni, il residuo polverulento contiene ancora 1-2 % di principio attivo; pertanto il residuo, secondo la normativa vigente, è da considerarsi, tossico e nocivo. Da quanto esposto risulta evidente che l' esaurimento totale del principio attivo in un tempo ragionevole si può ottenere rimescolando continuamente il residuo polverulento. In aggiunta la velocità della produzione di fosfina dipende dalla quantità di acqua presente e dalla temperatura. In sintesi i parametri che consentono di esaurire completamente il principio attivo e di ridurre i tempi di reazione da cinque giorni a due giorni sono : rimescolamento, aggiunta di acqua al principio attivo e suo riscaldamento durante la fase di reazione. E' stato progettato e realizzato un dispositivo che prevede l' impiego dei parametri sopra riportati. Il dispositivo, di facile uso, consente di esaurire in maniera completa il principio attivo e di ridurre il tempo di produzione di fosfina da 5 giorni a 2 giorni. In aggiunta, il dispositivo risulta particolarmente conveniente nelle fumigazioni in periodi freddi.
