Black snakes (Pseudechis spp) are a genus of venomous Australian elapid snakes that can cause major clinical envenomation in companion animals, which may be fatal, even with appropriate antivenom treatment. Despite its clinical significance, there is little published information on the pathology of black snake envenomation. We report the gross and microscopic lesions associated with black snake envenomation in two dogs, one with a definitive immunological species identification of red-bellied black snake (RBBS; Pseudechis porphyriacus), the other with a black snake immunotype on a venom detection kit. Both dogs were located in a geographical area where the RBBS is found. The prominent gross findings in both cases included icterus, localized facial oedema in the region of the presumed bite wound, pigmenturia and multicavitary serosanguineous effusions. Histopathology of the confirmed RBBS case revealed acute renal tubular necrosis with haemosiderosis, marked splenic haemosiderosis and centrilobular to midzonal hepatocellular necrosis with severe cholestasis. Defining the spectrum of lesions of elapid snake envenomation improves understanding of the pathogenesis, which may lead to improved patient outcomes and post-mortem diagnosis.

Background The northern hairy-nosed wombat (Lasiorhinus krefftii) is critically endangered, with only 200 individuals remaining in the wild. Individuals are rarely available for detailed pathological assessment and identification of disease threats to individuals is critically important to species conservation. Case report Two male northern hairy-nosed wombats, part of the Richard Underwood Nature Refuge population, were presented for necropsy, 5 months apart. They were found to have succumbed to adiaspiromycosis caused by the fungus Emmonsia parva. Pathological presentations were of severe pulmonary oedema and fibrosis, and pleuritis, respectively. Characteristic fungal adiaspores were noted on histopathological examination. The wombats had concurrent variably severe ectoparasite and endoparasite burdens. Conclusion These are the first reported cases of adiaspiromycosis in northern hairy-nosed wombats and the organism was associated with significant pathological changes. The rarity and the logistical challenges of presenting northern hairy-nosed wombats for pathological assessment are a challenge to identifying disease threats in this critically endangered species.

Two adult koalas (Phascolarctos cinereus) were presented for necropsy examination without any clinical history. A diffuse, severe gelatinous effusion was found in the abdominal cavity, while numerous 1-3 mm diameter, round, well-demarcated, multifocal to coalescing, raised, firm nodules containing a clear gelatinous fluid were scattered on the surface of the parietal peritoneum, diaphragm, liver, gastrointestinal tract and mesentery. Microscopically, the nodular lesions consisted of spindle-shaped to stellate neoplastic cells, with scant eosinophilic cytoplasm and moderate anisocytosis and anisokaryosis. The neoplastic cells were admixed with and surrounded by abundant acellular pale eosinophilic material that was stained by Alcian blue and only weakly by the periodic acid-Schiff reaction. Serosal proliferations are described rarely in koalas and to the authors' knowledge this is the first reported case of serosal myxosarcoma. The significance and pathogenesis of this condition in the koala population is unknown.

The goal of the study was to evaluate alternative student-centered approaches that could replace autopsy sessions and live demonstration and to explore refinements in assessment procedures for standardized cardiac dissection. Simulators and videos were identified as feasible, economical, student-centered teaching methods for technical skills training in medical contexts, and a direct comparison was undertaken. A low-fidelity anatomically correct simulator approximately the size of a horse's heart with embedded dissection pathways was constructed and used with a series of laminated photographs of standardized cardiac dissection. A video of a standardized cardiac dissection of a normal horse's heart was recorded and presented with audio commentary. Students were allowed to nominate a preference for learning method, and students who indicated no preference were randomly allocated to keep group numbers even. Objective performance data from an objective structure assessment criterion and student perception data on confidence and competency from surveys showed both innovations were similarly effective. Evaluator reflections as well as usage logs to track patterns of student use were both recorded. A strong selection preference was identified for kinesthetic learners choosing the simulator and visual learners choosing the video. Students in the video cohort were better at articulating the reasons for dissection procedures and sequence due to the audio commentary, and student satisfaction was higher with the video. The major conclusion of this study was that both methods are effective tools for technical skills training, but consideration should be given to the preferred learning style of adult learners to maximize educational outcomes.
