The study of thin-film and multi-layered structures with nanometer resolution is possible with low energy µSR (LE-µSR). Modeling of the measured µSR parameters such as diamagnetic asymmetry and relaxation rate as a function of sample depth can be obtained from a series of experimental implantation energy measurements and its correlation with the simulated stopping profiles. The fitting approach assumes a sharp transition between regions with distinct properties. The fitting method, previously developed in matlab, was implemented in musrfit, a free µSR data analysis framework written in C++. We report depth-resolved measurements of the Meissner screening profile in several surface-treated Nb samples using low-energy muon spin rotation (LE-$\mu$SR). In these experiments, implanted positive muons, whose stopping depths below Nb's surface were adjusted between ~10 nm to ~150 nm, reveal the field distribution inside the superconducting element via their spin-precession (communicated through their radioactive decay products). We compare how the field screening is modified by different surface treatments commonly employed to prepare superconducting radio frequency (SRF) cavities used in accelerator beamlines. In contrast to an earlier report [A. Romanenko et al., Appl. Phys. Lett. 104 072601 (2014)], we find no evidence for any "anomalous" modifications to the Meissner profiles, with all data being well-described by a London model. Differences in screening properties between surface treatments can be explained by changes to the carrier mean-free-paths resulting from dopant profiles near the material's surface., Comment: 15 pages, 5 figures, 2 tables

We performed depth-dependent low-energy muon spin spectroscopy ($\mu$SR) studies on three palladium 100 nm thin films, both undoped and doped with 170 ppm of iron. Muons implanted in the surface and substrate interface region probe an increased local magnetic field compared to the inner part of the sample. The field increase extends over a few nanometers, it is temperature-independent (in the range of 3.7 - 100 K), stronger for the iron-doped samples and accompanied by an increase in local field inhomogeneity. We consider various potential origins for this magnetic surface state, such as adsorbents and supressed d-states. Our conclusion is that orbital moments induced at the surface / interface by localized spins and charges are the most likely explanation, potentially accompanied by magnetic moments due to crystal irregularities.

Here we present the results of the first measurement of the 2S1/2, F=0 -> 2P1/2, F=1 transition in Muonium, the hydrogen-like bound state of a positive muon and an electron. The measured value of 580.6+-6.8 MHz is in agreement with the theoretical calculations. From this measurement a value of the Lamb shift of 1045.5+-6.8 MHz is extracted, compatible with previous experiments. We also determine for the first time the 2S hyperfine splitting in Muonium to be 559.6+-7.2 MHz. The measured transition being isolated from the other hyperfine levels holds the promise to provide an improved determination of the Muonium Lamb shift at a level where bound state QED recoil corrections not accessible in hydrogen could be tested. Such a measurement will also be sensitive to new physics in the muonic sector, e.g. to new bosons which might provide an explanation of the g-2 muon anomaly or Lorentz and CPT violation. We also present the first observation of Muonium in the n = 3 excited state opening up the possibility of new precise microwave measurements as realized in hydrogen.

Thin films of the solid solution Nd 1 − x La x NiO3 are grown in order to study the expected 0 K phase transitions at a specific composition. We experimentally map out the structural, electronic and magnetic properties as a function of x and a discontinuous, possibly first order, insulator–metal transition is observed at low temperature when x = 0.2. Raman spectroscopy and scanning transmission electron microscopy show that this is not associated with a correspondingly discontinuous global structural change. On the other hand, results from density functional theory (DFT) and combined DFT and dynamical mean field theory calculations produce a 0 K first order transition at around this composition. We further estimate the temperature-dependence of the transition from thermodynamic considerations and find that a discontinuous insulator–metal transition can be reproduced theoretically and implies a narrow insulator–metal phase coexistence with x. Finally, muon spin rotation (µSR) measurements suggest that there are non-static magnetic moments in the system that may be understood in the context of the first order nature of the 0 K transition and its associated phase coexistence regime.

In an all solid state Li-ion battery, it is crucial to reduce ionic resistivity at the interface between the electrode and the electrolyte in order to enhance Li+ mobility across the interface. Recent first principles calculations predict the presence of a space-charge layer (SCL) at the interface due to the difference in the Li+ chemical potential at the interface between two different materials, as in the metal-semiconductor junction in electronic devices. However, the presence of SCL has never been experimentally observed. Our first attempt in a fresh multilayer sample, Cu(10 nm)/Li3PO4(50 nm)/LiCoO2(100 nm) on a sapphire substrate, with low-energy µ +SR (LE µ +SR) revealed a gradual change in the nuclear magnetic field distribution width as a function of implantation depth even across the interface between Li3PO4 and LiCoO2. This implies that the change in the field distribution width at SCL of the sample is too small to be detected by LE µ +SR.

The importance of accounting for the inhomogeneity of the magnetic field distribution and roundness of domain walls near the surface of type-I superconductors in the intermediate state for forming the equilibrium flux structure was predicted by Landau eight decades ago. Further studies confirmed this prediction and extended it to all equilibrium properties of this state. Here we report on direct depth-resolved measurements of the field distribution and shape of domains near the surface of high-purity type-I (indium) films in a perpendicular field using Low-Energy Muon Spin Rotation spectroscopy. We find that at low applied fields (in about half of the field range of the intermediate state) the field distribution and domains' shape agrees with that proposed by Tinkham. However, for high fields our data suggest that reality differs from theoretical expectations. In particular, the width of the superconducting laminae can expand near the surface leading to formation of a maximum in the static magnetic field in the current-free space outside the sample. The discovery of superconductivity in Nd$_{0.8}$Sr$_{0.2}$NiO$_2$ [1] introduced a new family of layered nickelate superconductors that has now been extended to include a range of Sr-doping [2, 3], Pr or La in place of Nd [4-6], and the 5-layer Nd$_6$Ni$_5$O$_{12}$ [7]. A number of studies indicate that electron correlations are strong in these materials [8-14], and hence a central question is whether or not magnetism is present as a consequence of these interactions. Here we report muon spin rotation/relaxation studies of a series of superconducting infinite-layer nickelates. In all cases we observe an intrinsic magnetic ground state, regardless of the rare earth ion or doping, arising from local moments on the nickel sublattice. The coexistence of magnetism - which is likely to be antiferromagnetic and short-range ordered - with superconductivity is reminiscent of some iron pnictides [15] and heavy fermion compounds [16], and qualitatively distinct from the doped cuprates [17].

Materials with strongly correlated electrons often exhibit interesting physical properties. An example of these materials is the layered oxide perovskite Sr2RuO4, which has been intensively investigated due to its unusual properties. Whilst the debate on the symmetry of the superconducting state in Sr2RuO4 is still ongoing, a deeper understanding of the Sr2RuO4 normal state appears crucial as this is the background in which electron pairing occurs. Here, by using low-energy muon spin spectroscopy we discover the existence of surface magnetism in Sr2RuO4 in its normal state. We detect static weak dipolar fields yet manifesting at an onset temperature higher than 50 K. We ascribe this unconventional magnetism to orbital loop currents forming at the reconstructed Sr2RuO4 surface. Our observations set a reference for the discovery of the same magnetic phase in other materials and unveil an electronic ordering mechanism that can influence electron pairing with broken time reversal symmetry. Strontium Ruthenate, Sr2RuO4, displays a remarkable number of intriguing physical phenomena, from superconductivity, to strain-induced ferromagnetism. Here, using low-energy muon spectroscopy, Fittipaldi et al. demonstrate the existence of unconventional magnetism at the surface of Sr2RuO4 in its normal state and without any applied strain.

Muon spin rotation/relaxation measurements were performed to investigate magnetic properties of $\mathrm{Fe}{\mathrm{Se}}_{1\ensuremath{-}x}{\mathrm{S}}_{x}$ thin films on $\mathrm{La}\mathrm{Al}{\mathrm{O}}_{3}$. A drastic decrease of the initial asymmetry was observed together with the peak structure in the temperature dependence of the relaxation rate of muon spins almost at the same temperature where kink anomalies were observed in the temperature-dependent resistivity. With increasing S content, the anomaly temperature increased and the magnetic fluctuations at the lowest temperature were suppressed. These results show that the S substitution induces magnetism at low temperatures in $\mathrm{Fe}{\mathrm{Se}}_{1\ensuremath{-}x}{\mathrm{S}}_{x}$ thin films. Although the behaviors of the magnetic and nematic phases in FeSe films toward chemical pressure by S substitution are similar to those for bulk FeSe toward hydrostatic pressure, the behavior of ${T}_{\mathrm{c}}$ is significantly different between these systems. Our results demonstrate that the detailed comparative investigation among physical and chemical pressure effects is essentially important to understand the interplay of the magnetism, the nematicity, and the superconductivity in iron chalcogenides.

$3{d}^{2}$ vanadate perovskites exhibit an unusual phase diagram where the low temperature orbital and spin orders are strongly dependent upon the rare-earth cation size. Here, we demonstrate the delicate role of strain in epitaxial ${\mathrm{LaVO}}_{3}$ films by performing low-energy muon spin spectroscopy and ellipsometry measurements. The electronic structure is revealed by the measurement of the multipeak structure of the charge excitations. The analysis highlights the independent roles of the ${d}_{xy}$ band confinement and the ${d}_{zx},{d}_{zy}$ doublet polarization for the orbital ordering to establish.

We present a detailed low-energy muon spin rotation and x-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) investigation of the magnetic structure in ultra-thin tetragonal (T)-CuO films. The measured muon-spin polarization decay indicates an antiferromagnetic (AFM) order with a transition temperature higher than 200K. The XMCD signal obtained around the Cu $L_{2,3}$ edges indicates the presence of pinned Cu$^{2+}$ moments that are parallel to the sample surface, and additionally, isotropic paramagnetic moments. The pinning of some of the Cu moments is caused by an AFM ordering consisting of moments that lie most likely in the plane of the film. Moreover, pinned moments show a larger orbital magnetic moment contribution with an approximate ratio of $m_{orb}/m_{spin} = 2$, indicating that these spins are located at sites with reduced symmetry. Some fractions of the pinned moments remain pinned from an AFM background even at 360K, indicating that $T_N >$ 360K. A simple model could explain qualitatively these experimental findings; however, it is in contrast to theoretical predictions, showing that the magnetic properties of ultra-thin T-CuO films differ from bulk expectations and is more complex., 11 Figures

Gut microbiota influences many aspects of host health including immune, metabolic, and gut health. We examined the effect of a fermented whey concentrate (FWC) drink rich in L-(+)-Lactic acid, consumed daily, in 18 healthy men (n = 5) and women (n = 13) in free-living conditions.Objective: The aims of this 6-weeks pilot trial were to (i) identify changes in the gut microbiota composition and fecal short chain fatty acid (SCFA) profile, and (ii) to monitor changes in glucose homeostasis.Results: Total fecal SCFA (mM) concentration remained constant throughout the intervention. Proportionally, there was a significant change in the composition of different SCFAs compared to baseline. Acetate levels were significantly reduced (−6.5%; p < 0.01), coupled to a significant increase in the relative amounts of propionate (+2.2%; p < 0.01) and butyrate (+4.2%; p < 0.01), respectively. No changes in the relative abundance of any specific bacteria were detected. No significant changes were observed in glucose homeostasis in response to an oral glucose tolerance test.Conclusion: Daily consumption of a fermented whey product led to significant changes in fecal SCFA metabolite profile, indicating some potential prebiotic activity. These changes did not result in any detectable differences in microbiota composition. Post-hoc analysis indicated that baseline microbiota composition might be indicative of participants likely to see changes in SCFA levels. However, due to the lack of a control group these findings would need to be verified in a rigorously controlled trial. Future work is also required to identify the biological mechanisms underlying the observed changes in microbiota activity and to explore if these processes can be harnessed to favorably impact host health.Clinical Trial Registration: www.clinicaltrials.gov, identifier NCT03615339; retrospectively registered on 03/08/2018.

At an interface between a topological insulator (TI) and a conventional superconductor (SC), superconductivity has been predicted to change dramatically and exhibit novel correlations. In particular, the induced superconductivity by an s-wave SC in a TI can develop an order parameter with a p-wave component. Here we present experimental evidence for an unexpected proximity-induced novel superconducting state in a thin layer of the prototypical TI, Bi2Se3 proximity coupled to Nb. From depth-resolved magnetic field measurements below the superconducting transition temperature of Nb, we observe a local enhancement of the magnetic field in Bi2Se3 that exceeds the externally applied field, thus supporting the existence of an intrinsic paramagnetic Meissner effect arising from an odd-frequency superconducting state. Our experimental results are complemented by theoretical calculations supporting the appearance of such a component at the interface which extends into the TI. This state is topologically distinct from the conventional Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer state it originates from. To the best of our knowledge, these findings present a first observation of bulk odd-frequency superconductivity in a TI. Background: Herbal remedies of Echinacea purpurea tinctures are widely used today to reduce common cold respiratory tract infections.Methods: A system biology approach involving genomewide transcriptome, epigenome and kinome activity profiles was applied to characterize the immunomodulatory effects of a standardized Echinacea purpurea extract Echinaforce® in THP1 monocytes.Results: Gene expression and DNA methylation analysis revealed activation of innate immunity related antiviral signaling networks, involving IFN, chemotaxis and immunometabolic pathways. Furthermore, phosphopeptide based kinome activity profiling and pharmacological inhibitor experiments with filgotinib confirm a key role for Janus Kinase (JAK)-1 dependent gene expression changes in innate immune signaling. Finally, Echinaforce® treatment induces DNA hypermethylation at intergenic CpG, long/short interspersed nuclear DNA repeat elements (LINE, SINE) or long termininal DNA repeats (LTR). This changes transcription of flanking endogenous retroviral sequences (HERVs), involved in an evolutionary conserved (epi)genomic protective response against viral infections.Conclusions: Altogether, our results suggest that Echinaforce® phytochemicals strengthen antiviral innate immunity by JAK1 responsive gene expression and epigenetic regulation of HERVs in monocytes, which supports its prophylactic use against common cold corona viruses (CoV), Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS)-CoV, and new occurring strains such as SARS-CoV-2.

Background: Coronaviruses (CoVs) were long thought to only cause mild respiratory and gastrointestinal symptoms in humans but recent outbreaks of Middle Eastern Respiratory Syndrome (MERS)-CoV, Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS)-CoV, and the newly identified SARS-CoV-2 have cemented their zoonotic potential and their capacity to cause serious morbidity and mortality, with case fatality rates ranging from 2 to 35%. Currently, no specific prophylaxis or treatment is available for CoV infections and therefore we investigated the antiviral potential of Echinacea purpurea (Echinaforce®) against human coronavirus (HCoV) 229E and the highly pathogenic MERS- and SARS-CoVs in vitro.Methods:To evaluate the antiviral potential of Echinaforce we pre-treated virus particles and cells and evaluated remaining infectivity by limited dilution. Furthermore, we exposed cells to the extract post-infection to further estimate its potential as a prophylaxis and treatment against coronaviruses. We also determined the protective effect of Echinaforce in re-constituted nasal epithelium.Results:We found that HCoV-229E was irreversibly inactivated when exposed to Echinaforce at 3.2mg/ml IC50. Pre-treatment of cell lines, however, did not inhibit infection with HCoV-229E and post-infection treatment had only a marginal effect on virus propagation at 50 mg/ml. However, we did observe a protective effect in an organotypic respiratory cell culture system by exposing pre-treated respiratory epithelium to droplets of HCoV-229E, imitating a natural infection. Finally, antiviral activity was not restricted to common cold coronaviruses, as the highly pathogenic SARS- and MERS-CoVs were inactivated at comparable concentrations.Conclusions:These results suggest that Echinacea purpurea preparations, such as Echinaforce, could be effective as prophylactic treatment for all CoVs, including newly occurring strains, such as SARS-CoV-2.

Implanted positive muons with low energies (in the range 1-30 keV) are extremely useful local probes in the study of thin films and multi-layer structures. The average muon stopping depth, typically in the order of tens of nanometers, is a function of the muon implantation energy and of the density of the material, but the stopping range extends over a broad region, which is also in the order of tens of nanometers. Therefore, an adequate simulation procedure is required in order to extract the depth dependence of the experimental parameters. Here, we present a method to extract depth-resolved information from the implantation energy dependence of the experimental parameters in a low-energy muon spin spectroscopy experiment. The method and corresponding results are exemplified for a semiconductor film, Cu(In,Ga)Se2, covered with a thin layer of Al2O3, but can be applied to any heterostructure studied with low-energy muons. It is shown that if an effect is present in the experimental data, this method is an important tool to identify its location and depth extent. published

Precision spectroscopy of the Muonium Lamb shift and fine structure requires a robust source of 2S Muonium. To date, the beam-foil technique is the only demonstrated method for creating such a beam in vacuum. Previous experiments using this technique were statistics limited, and new measurements would benefit tremendously from the efficient 2S production at a low energy muon (< 20 keV) facility. Such a source of abundant low energy μ+ has only become available in recent years, e.g. at the Low-Energy Muon beamline at the Paul Scherrer Institute. Using this source, we report on the successful creation of an intense, directed beam of metastable Muonium. We find that even though the theoretical Muonium fraction is maximal in the low energy range of 2–5 keV, scattering by the foil and transport characteristics of the beamline favor slightly higher μ+ energies of 7–10 keV. We estimate that an event detection rate of a few events per second for a future Lamb shift measurement is feasible, enabling an increase in precision by two orders of magnitude over previous determinations., The European Physical Journal C, 80 (9), ISSN:1434-6044, ISSN:1434-6052

We present a coordinated study of the paramagnetic-to-antiferromagnetic, rhombohedral-to-monoclinic, and metal-to-insulator transitions in thin-film specimens of the classic Mott insulator ${\mathrm{V}}_{2}{\mathrm{O}}_{3}$ using low-energy muon spin relaxation, x-ray diffraction, and nanoscale-resolved near-field infrared spectroscopic techniques. The measurements provide a detailed characterization of the thermal evolution of the magnetic, structural, and electronic phase transitions occurring in a wide temperature range, including quantitative measurements of the high- and low-temperature phase fractions for each transition. The results reveal a stable coexistence of the high- and low-temperature phases over a broad temperature range throughout the transition. Careful comparison of temperature dependence of the different measurements, calibrated by the resistance of the sample, demonstrates that the electronic, magnetic, and structural degrees of freedom remain tightly coupled to each other during the transition process. We also find evidence for antiferromagnetic fluctuations in the vicinity of the phase transition, highlighting the important role of the magnetic degree of freedom in the metal-insulator transition.

In recent years graphical processing units (GPUs) have become a powerful tool in scientific computing. Their potential to speed up highly parallel applications brings the power of high performance computing to a wider range of users. However, programming these devices and integrating their use in existing applications is still a challenging task. In this paper we examined the potential of GPUs for two different applications. The first application, created at Paul Scherrer Institut (PSI), is used for parameter fitting during data analysis of μ SR (muon spin rotation, relaxation and resonance) experiments. The second application, developed at ETH, is used for PET (Positron Emission Tomography) image reconstruction and analysis. Applications currently in use were examined to identify parts of the algorithms in need of optimization. Efficient GPU kernels were created in order to allow applications to use a GPU, to speed up the previously identified parts. Benchmarking tests were performed in order to measure the achieved speedup. During this work, we focused on single GPU systems to show that real time data analysis of these problems can be achieved without the need for large computing clusters. The results show that the currently used application for parameter fitting, which uses OpenMP to parallelize calculations over multiple CPU cores, can be accelerated around 40 times through the use of a GPU. The speedup may vary depending on the size and complexity of the problem. For PET image analysis, the obtained speedups of the GPU version were more than × 40 larger compared to a single core CPU implementation. The achieved results show that it is possible to improve the execution time by orders of magnitude.

Using the low energy muon spin rotation measurement technique, we further investigate this new theory by probing directly the flux screening in various superconductor-ferromagnet proximity structures. We examine its main characteristics and find in general good agreement between theory and experiment.
