Addressing disease remission and treatment adherence in inflammatory bowel diseases (IBDs), such as Crohn’s disease, poses significant challenges due to underlying oxidative and inflammatory processes. Nanotechnology emerges as a promising avenue for enhancing therapeutic outcomes in IBD by optimizing drug bioactivity, reducing toxicity, and extending circulation time. Gold nanoparticles, known for their resistance to gastrointestinal pH and possessing antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, offer particular promise. They can be produced by green synthesis with seaweed Ericaria selaginoides (ES), itself associated with gastroprotective and anti-inflammatory activities. In a murine model of Crohn’s disease induced with 8% acetic acid, pretreatment with dexamethasone (0.2 mL/30 g) or Au@ES (25 and 50 mg/kg) effectively mitigated inflammatory features. Notably, ES (50 mg/kg) and Au@ES (50 mg/kg) administration resulted in significant reductions in both macroscopic and microscopic inflammation scores compared to the disease control group. Furthermore, these treatments normalized inflammatory cytokine expression while safeguarding myenteric plexus glial cells. They also impeded neutrophil activation, leading to reduced myeloperoxidase activity and lipid peroxidation, coupled with increased glutathione levels. In conclusion, ES and Au@ES exhibit potent efficacy in counteracting inflammation and oxidation processes in an experimental Crohn’s disease model, suggesting their potential as alternative therapeutic strategies for IBD.

With the increment of the aging population in recent years, neurodegenerative diseases exert a major global disease burden, essentially as a result of the lack of treatments that stop the disease progression. Alzheimer’s Disease (AD) is an example of a neurodegenerative disease that affects millions of people globally, with no effective treatment. Natural compounds have emerged as a viable therapy to fill a huge gap in AD management, and in recent years, mostly fueled by the COVID-19 pandemic, RNA-based therapeutics have become a hot topic in the treatment of several diseases. Treatments of AD face significant limitations due to the complex and interconnected pathways that lead to their hallmarks and also due to the necessity to cross the blood–brain barrier. Nanotechnology has contributed to surpassing this bottleneck in the treatment of AD by promoting safe and enhanced drug delivery to the brain. In particular, exosome-like nanoparticles, a hybrid delivery system combining exosomes and liposomes’ advantageous features, are demonstrating great potential in the treatment of central nervous system diseases.

In the last decades, marine macroalgae have drawn attention mainly because of their bioactive constituents. Most brown algae are distributed over coastal areas of the Atlantic Ocean, Mediterranean Sea, Aegean Sea and Black Sea, and their composition varies with endogenous and exogenous factors. Phlorotannins, fatty acids, sterols and carbohydrates are some of the compounds responsible for biological activities related to cytotoxic, antiviral, antifungal, antibacterial, antidiabetic, antioxidant and anti-inflammatory potential. In this review we seek to highlight some of the compounds responsible for these last two biological activities, which have enormous importance for the management of neurodegenerative diseases, such as Alzheimer and Parkinson’s, with neuroinflammation and oxidative stress as hallmarks. However, one of the major problems associated with treating these diseases is the highly selective blood-brain-barrier, which can be overcome with nanocarriers used as delivery systems. Weighing the risks, benefits and toxicity of the used nanoparticles is nevertheless important. We also discuss zebrafish as an upcoming adequate biological model for in vivo screening of risks and benefits of such treatment strategies. This review aims to enable researchers working in the exploitation of these macroalgae and in the use of nanocarriers to potentiate the controlled delivery of bioactive compounds.

Care for food security has been on the rise in recent years, establishing a series of discussions among the responsible sectors to ensure that the population does not receive products that are harmful to their health and do not present pathogenic microorganisms from their manipulation. Thus, the objective of this study was to evaluate the presence of bacteria on cutting boards (wood, plastic and glass) used for food handling at two farmer’s markets in Bacabal/ MA. 16 samples of the surfaces of these utensils were analyzed through cultivation in MacConkey agar and nutrient agar culture media; the microorganisms were identified by Enterokit B® and Gram stain test and catalase test, respectively. Antibiotic susceptibility testing (AST) was also performed with 10 drugs. The results of microbiological analysis indicated the presence of Staphylococcus spp., Klebsiella pneumoniae, Salmonella spp., Serratia marcenscens and Citrobacter freundii, and the wooden cutting board displayed the greatest contamination. In relation to AST, some bacteria demonstrated resistance to oxacillin, lincomycin and cephalothin. Hygienic and sanitary aspects of the plates are not adequate, thus being tools for the transmission of pathogens. In addition, antimicrobial resistance is a concern and a public health problem, so there is a need to improve these conditions and strategies to minimize the occurrence of microorganisms.

Hydrogels are known for their leading role in biomaterial systems involving pharmaceuticals that fascinate material scientists to work on the wide variety of biomedical applications. The physical and mechanical properties of hydrogels, along with their biodegradability and biocompatibility characteristics, have made them an attractive and flexible tool with various applications such as imaging, diagnosis and treatment. The water-cherishing nature of hydrogels and their capacity to swell—contingent upon a few ecological signals or the simple presence of water—is alluring for drug conveyance applications. Currently, there are several problems relating to drug delivery, to which hydrogel may provide a possible solution. Hence, it is pertinent to collate updates on hydrogels pertaining to biomedical applications. The primary objective of this review article is to garner information regarding classification, properties, methods of preparations, and of the polymers used with particular emphasis on injectable hydrogels. This review also covers the regulatory and other commerce specific information. Further, it enlists several patents and clinical trials of hydrogels with related indications and offers a consolidated resource for all facets associated with the biomedical hydrogels.

Abstract Introduction Aggression can be defined according to impulsive or premeditated features. Impulsivity is defined as an uncontrolled and unplanned form of aggression. On the contrary, premeditation requires planning and is goal-oriented. Objective The purpose of this study was to validate the basic psychometric properties of the Impulsive/Premeditated Aggression Scale (IPAS) into European Portuguese. The scale evaluates aggression according to impulsive and premeditated features, which are considered the predominant forms of aggressive behavior, and can be used in community, forensic and clinical settings. Methods Participants from a community sample (n = 957; 424 male) and incarcerated individuals (n = 115, all male) completed the IPAS. Results Internal consistency and reliability indicated that the scale has good psychometric properties in both samples. Data from a principal component analysis (PCA) demonstrated similarities to previous structures reported in the literature. Conclusions The scale demonstrated to be sensitive to the bimodal classification of aggression in community and forensic samples, indicating its utility in the characterization of aggressive patterns.

Poly(vinylidene fluoride) nanocomposites processed with different morphologies, such as porous and non-porous films and fibres, have been prepared with silica nanoparticles (SiNPs) of varying diameter (17, 100, 160 and 300 nm), which in turn have encapsulated perylenediimide (PDI), a fluorescent molecule. The structural, morphological, optical, thermal, and mechanical properties of the nanocomposites, with SiNP filler concentration up to 16 wt %, were evaluated. Furthermore, cytotoxicity and cell proliferation studies were performed. All SiNPs are negatively charged independently of the pH and more stable from pH 5 upwards. The introduction of SiNPs within the polymer matrix increases the contact angle independently of the nanoparticle diameter. Moreover, the smallest ones (17 nm) also improve the PVDF Young’s modulus. The filler diameter, physico-chemical, thermal and mechanical properties of the polymer matrix were not significantly affected. Finally, the SiNPs’ inclusion does not induce cytotoxicity in murine myoblasts (C2C12) after 72 h of contact and proliferation studies reveal that the prepared composites represent a suitable platform for tissue engineering applications, as they allow us to combine the biocompatibility and piezoelectricity of the polymer with the possible functionalization and drug encapsulation and release of the SiNP.

- Abstract
The purpose of this chapter is to review the literature on health services internationalization and to identify the most addressed themes using the Scopus platform. Six articles were analyzed in detail and contributed to the results and discussion. The literature was found to highlight the internationalization of medical services mainly in developed countries. However, emerging countries have felt the need to adapt their services to international competitiveness. The potential of these initiatives has encouraged governments to restructure their hospital infrastructure. This growth, in the countries of origin, is a consequence of outdated, slower, and overloaded services and the difficulty of access to alternative treatments. This study summarizes the reasons, motives, and decision-making processes that lead patients to opt for services outside their home country.

- Abstract

Abstract: The novels of Maria O’Neill (1873-1932), a committed Portuguese feminist, spiritualist and socialist writer, were considered by many conservatives as propaganda for dangerous ideas. In her prolific and diverse career, O'Neill has effectively registered and publicized the feminine and feminist experience of the early 20th century. Her texts presented and discussed not only the actors who subjugated, diminished and limited the existence of women, but, above all, the possibilities and potential that they had to transgress and overcome such impediments. In A marquesa de Vale Negro, of 1914, Maria O'Neill points out the harmful effects of the female rivalry established and maintained by the patriarchy. Following in the footsteps of the writer in Brazil is also revealing the paths of feminism and spiritualism in the country. Without conciliatory endings, Her texts affirm the importance of mobilization and collective struggle for the construction of a more egalitarian and just society. Introduction Research on gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) occupies a prominent place in the field of biomedicine nowadays, being their putative toxicity and bioactivity areas of major concern. The green synthesis of metallic nanoparticles using extracts from marine organisms allows the avoidance of hazardous production steps while maintaining features of interest, thus enabling the exploitation of their promising bioactivity. Objective To synthesize and characterize AuNPs using, for the first time, macroalga Cystoseira tamariscifolia aqueous extract (Au@CT). Methods Algal aqueous extracts were used for the synthesis of AuNPs, which were characterized using a wide panel of physicochemical techniques and biological assays. Results The characterization by UV-Vis spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy, Z-potential and infrared spectroscopy confirmed that Au@CT were stable, spherical and polycrystalline, with a mean diameter of 7.6 ± 2.2 nm. The antioxidant capacity of the extract, prior to and after synthesis, was analyzed in vitro, showing that the high antioxidant potential was not lost during the synthesis. Subsequently, in vitro and in vivo toxicity was screened, by comparing two species of the genus Cystoseira (C. tamariscifolia and C. baccata) and the corresponding biosynthesized gold nanoparticles (Au@CT and Au@CB). Cytotoxicity was tested in mouse (L929) and human (BJ5ta) fibroblast cell lines. In both cases, only the highest (nominal) test concentration of both extracts (31.25 mg/mL) or Au@CB (12.5 mM) significantly affected cell viability, as measured by the MTT assay. These results were corroborated by a Fish Embryo Acute Toxicity (FET) test. Briefly, it was shown that, at the highest (nominal) tested concentration (31.25 mg/mL), CT extract induced significantly higher cytotoxicity and embryotoxicity than CB extract. However, it was demonstrated that Au@CT, but not Au@CB, were generally non-toxic. At sub-lethal (nominal) test concentrations (1.25 and 2.5 mM), Au@CT affected zebrafish embryonic development to a much lesser extent than Au@CB. In vitro wound healing assays also revealed that, while other experimental conditions did not impact cell migration, CT and Au@CT displayed a moderate positive effect. Conclusion Au@CT and Au@CB display promising features, desirable for biomedical applications, as wound healing.

Diversity of production systems and specific socio-economic barriers are key reasons explaining why the implementation of new technologies in small ruminants, despite being needed and beneficial for farmers, is harder than in other livestock species. There are, however, helpful peculiarities where small ruminants are concerned: the compulsory use of electronic identification created a unique scenario in Europe in which all small ruminant breeding stock became searchable by appropriate sensing solutions, and the largest small ruminant population in the world is located in Asia, close to the areas producing new technologies. Notwithstanding, only a few research initiatives and literature reviews have addressed the development of new technologies in small ruminants. This Research Reflection focuses on small ruminants (with emphasis on dairy goats and sheep) and reviews in a non-exhaustive way the basic concepts, the currently available sensor solutions and the structure and elements needed for the implementation of sensor-based husbandry decision support. Finally, some examples of results obtained using several sensor solutions adapted from large animals or newly developed for small ruminants are discussed. Significant room for improvement is recognized and a large number of multiple-sensor solutions are expected to be developed in the relatively near future.

Background: Studies are linking the history of childhood adversity and alexithymia and others with empathy. Alexithymia refers to the difficulty of expressing feelings. Adversity is emotional, physical and / or sexual abuse, emotional and / or physical neglect, parental divorce / separation, exposure to domestic violence, substance abuse in the family environment, mental illness and / or suicide and arrest of a family member. Adults who have experienced adversity in children are more likely to develop alexithymia and low empathy. Objectives: To analyze the relationship between the history of childhood adversity and the experience of adulthood victimization, childhood victimization, and adulthood alexithymia and the history of childhood adversity and empathy in adulthood. To verify the relationship between the history of childhood adversity and the perpetration of violent behaviors and between those same behaviors and empathy and alexithymia. Participants: Sample included 92 Portuguese adults (75 women and 17 men) between 20 and 63 years (M = 40.23, SD = 12.14). Method: Participants answered an online protocol consisting of a sociodemographic questionnaire with questions related to the victimization and perpetration of violent behaviors, by the Childhood History Questionnaire (ACE), the Twenty-Item Toronto Alexithymia Scale (TAS) -20 and the Interpersonal Reactivity Index (IRI). Results: Of the sample, 64.1% witnessed violence in childhood or youth. In childhood adversity, mental illness and suicide are the most quoted factor, empathy is the taking of perspective, and alexithymia is the outward-oriented thinking. The history of childhood adversity correlates negatively with empathy and positively with alexithymia. Conclusion: Experience of childhood adversity is present in most of the sample. Adverse childhood experiences are found to increase alexithymia and decrease empathy.

In this sense, Portugal has sought to increase awareness of stalking and strive for recognition of victims to contribute to prevention and to more effective support. The understanding of the phenomenon in justice professionals has become relevant since the professional context is considered a fertile environment for the presence of stalking, and there isn’t research that focuses on the evaluation, as well as the prevalence of stalking in the professionals of the which has been under-reported given its high risk. The sample of this investigation was composed of 270 legal professionals, 24.8% reported having been stalking at least once in their lifetime. In addition, women were more prevalent compared to men. In relation to the profession, the highest prevalence was verified in the group of professionals (lawyers, jurists, court officials and auditors). There followed the magistrates, and finally the judges and the criminal police. In short, the results obtained are of extreme importance and an alert for legal professionals as victims of stalking, and they can contribute to the adoption of strategies to prevent this crime in the exercise of these professional’s functions.

There is a growing number of companies expressing social concerns where environmental worries are also included. Even before legal obliga-tion of environmental disclosures, companies already used to adopt an active stance to safeguard their reputation. However, risk events may have negative impacts on companies’ legitimacy, making it necessary to implement strategies to repair/recover the damaged reputation. This study analyses the annual reports from 2001 to 2011 of the largest Por-tuguese oil company - Galp Energia - in the view of the occurrence of negative events, which, consequently, may have affected the company's reputation. Empirically, legitimacy theory can explain the implementa-tion of strategies to repair reputation. Within this context, most of the existing research is based on common-law countries, with little literature grounded on code-law countries, such as Portugal. Findings have shown that Galp Energia has great concerns about the external perception of society. The company acts immediately after risk events, implementing strategies to minimise the risk impact, especially through the use of cor-rective actions. info:eu-repo/semantics/acceptedVersion

Sixteen Murciano-Granadina dairy goats, provided with wireless rumen sensors for pH and temperature, were used to assess the rumen environment variations produced by extreme forage to concentrate diets (experiment 1) and climatic conditions (experiment 2). To avoid the interference of feed intake, goats were fed at maintenance level. Rumen sensors were inserted by surgery and programmed to collect and store rumen pH and temperature every 30min. In experiment 1, 8 dry goats (38.6±2.3kg of body weight) in tiestalls were divided into 2 groups and fed at maintenance level with 2 diets varying in forage-to-concentrate ratio [high forage (HF) 70:30; low forage (LF) 30:70] according to a crossover design. Diets were offered once daily for 4h and tap water (4 L, 9.8±0.4°C) was offered for only 30min at 6h after feeding. Rectal temperatures were recorded 3 times during the day. Rumen pH fell immediately after feeding, reaching a nadir depending on the diet (HF=6.35±0.07 at 11h after feeding; LF=6.07±0.07 at 6h after feeding) and being on average greater (0.31±0.06) in HF than LF goats. No diet effects were detected in rectal (38.2±0.1°C) and ruminal (38.9±0.1°C) mean temperatures, which were positively correlated. Rumen temperature dramatically changed by feeding (1.4±0.1°C) and drinking (−3.4±0.1°C), and 2h were necessary to return to the fasting value (38.2±0.1°C). In experiment 2, 8 dry goats (43.9±1.0kg of body weight) were kept in metabolic cages, fed a 50:50 diet and exposed to 2 climatic conditions following a crossover design. Conditions were thermoneutral (TN; 20 to 23°C day-night) and heat stress (HS; 12-h day at 37°C and 12-h night at 30°C). Humidity (40±5%) and photoperiod (light-dark, 12–12h) were similar. Goats were fed at maintenance level, the feed being offered once daily and water at ambient temperature was freely available. Intake, rectal temperature, and respiratory rate were recorded 3 times daily. Despite no differing in dry matter intake, rumen pH was lower in HS than in TN goats (−0.12±0.04). On the contrary, rumen temperature (0.3±0.1°C), rectal temperature (0.4±0.1°C), respiratory rate (77±5 breaths/min), and water intake (3.2±0.7 L/d) had a greater increase in HS than TN, which might indicate an altered microbial fermentation under high temperature conditions. In conclusion, wireless bolus sensors proved to be a useful tool to monitor rumen pH and temperature as affected by different feeding and climatic conditions.

Ciências Naturais::Ciências Biológicas - Abstract
[Excerpt] Throughout evolution nature created and refined proteins for a wide range of functions, working as structural components or as molecular motors. In this sense, the natural fibrous proteins represent the utmost case of function specialization and high performance materials. The remarkable mechanical properties of proteins like elastin or silk are founded on conservative blocks of amino acid sequences that propagate through the natural protein. These repetitive amino acid sequences are arranged in a way that creates flexible, rigid or tough domains, which are responsible for the physical and mechanical properties of the natural protein. Indeed, the recognition of the mechanics linking the nano- and micro-scale structure with the macromolecular assembly and organization, enabled molecular biologists to understand nature’s refined ways of creating high performance structural materials. Advances in synthetic protein biotechnology, emerging from the increase of knowledge in structural and molecular biology, combined with the use of recombinant DNA technology and biotechnology processes, made possible the advent of a new class of artificial biomacromolecules, the recombinant Protein-Based Polymers (rPBPs). This new class of protein-based materials, inspired in nature and with precisely controlled amino acid sequences, mimic the properties of their natural counterparts but can also combine in the same polypeptide chain the properties of two or more different proteins, creating copolymers with distinct properties from their native equivalents. Indeed, by recombinant DNA technology, it is possible to design and produce tailored synthetic genes, allowing for the creation of multifunctional complex PBPs with absolute control of its composition, structure and molecular weight. The focus of the present study is the relationship between subjects and reading habits in a logic of understanding if the family, school and society are able to sufficiently motivate children from the second cycle of Basic Education to the development of reading habits as a form of pleasure or distraction and as a source of knowledge. Thus, the present study aims precisely to identify the representations of the students in relation to reading, as well as to identify the reading habits of the children in the study and, finally, to identify the family and school practices in relation to reading, to reflect on them and to present possible ways of improvement. From these ends, the following research question was reached: "What are the representations and practices of students in relation to reading?" Followed by a subsidiary question with a reflexive content: "How can family and school contribute to the change of attitude and behavior of students in relation to reading and reading and, consequently, the acquisition of reading skills? " Taking into account the main objectives presented, the present study was part of a methodology of case study and was carried out in a group of the 6th year, constituted by 20 students, belonging to a Grouping of Schools where the Supervised Pedagogical Practice was developed. In order to answer the research questions, data were collected through reader biographies and a questionnaire survey of the students of the group referred to above, who were the group that worked on the Portuguese course. Based on the data collected and analyzed, it was found that the majority of the students demonstrates positive representations in relation to reading, and most of the students consider reading important because it allows learning and most of them say they enjoy reading. Still, there are students who understand reading as an annoyance and say they do not like to read. However, these results, as well as others led me as a trainee teacher in the process of training, to implement five activities that aimed to raise students' awareness of reading habits as well as the benefits of reading. Through the data and analysis inserted in this report, investigations may be carried out in the future, which include not only the students' representations and practices in relation to reading, but also the development of tools and sessions adequate for the development and improvement of reading habits of the school public, involving other actors, such as the family.

Goats are considered more tolerant to heat stress compared to dairy cows because of their greater sweating rate and lower body weight:surface ratio, allowing greater heat dissipation. Dairy goats kept under heat load in climatic chamber experienced losses in feed intake by 22–35% and produced 3–10% lower milk with reduced contents of fat, protein, and lactose. Moreover, milk of heat-stressed goats had altered coagulation properties, which could have an important impact for cheese industry. The RNA sequencing (RNA-seq) of milk cells showed that changes in milk composition were accompanied by down-regulation in the gene expression of casein, fat and lactose synthesis, and upregulation in the expression of genes related to milk cathepsins. Despite the reduction in feed intake, blood non esterified fatty acids and blood glucose did not change in heat-stressed goats. Lower insulin secretion after meals as well as muscle degradation are possible mechanisms to maintain the blood glucose levels under heat stress. Heat stress increased digestibility, which might partially compensate the reduction in feed intake. The microarray of blood cells revealed a change in the expression of genes regulating fat metabolism, which might be related to immune functions of blood cells under heat stress. In conclusion, heat stress exerts important changes in the metabolic functions, gene expression, inflammatory status, and productivity of dairy goats. Heat stress during pregnancy could permanently condition the productivity of the offspring, but this issue needs further investigation in dairy goats.
