Abstract

Organometallic ruthenium complexes with p-cymene = 1-methyl-4-(1-methylethyl)-benzene and N^N = bidentate polypyridyl ligands constitute interesting candidates with biological and catalytic properties. Towards this aim, we have synthesized four ruthenium(II)–arene complexes of the type [Ru(η6-p-cymene)(N^N)Cl][X] (N^N = Br-Qpy = 6-bromo-4-phenyl-2-pyridin-2-yl-quinoline, X = Cl− (1a); PF6− (1b); N^N = OH-Ph-Qpy = 4-(4-phenyl-2-(pyridin-2-yl)quinolin-6-yl)phenol, X = Cl− (2a); PF6− (2b)). This is the first report of ruthenium(II) p-cymene complexes incorporating substituted pyridine–quinoline ligands, with –Br and –C6H4OH groups in the 6-position of quinoline. We also refer to the cytotoxicity of the ligands and their possible effect of modulating the activity of the ruthenium(II) complexes. These were characterized by a combination of spectroscopic methods (ATR-IR, UV–Vis, multinuclear NMR), elemental analysis, and conductivity measurements. The solid-state structure of 2b, determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, reveals a three-legged piano-stool geometry. The in vitro cytotoxic activities of the new complexes were evaluated in HEK293T (human embryonic kidney cells) and in HeLa cells (cervical cancer cells), via the MTT assay. Poor in vitro anticancer activities were observed for the HeLa cancer cell line, with 2a being the most potent (IC50 = 75 μΜ). The cytotoxicity of Br-Qpy in HEK293T is comparable to that of cisplatin. Both complexes 1a and 1b successfully catalyze the transfer hydrogenation of benzophenone to benzhydrol by 2-propanol at 82 °C. The catalytic performance of 1a in the ratio of S:Cat:B = 400:1:40 (S = substrate, Cat = catalyst, B = base = KOiPr) leads to a conversion of 94%, within 3 h of reaction. Presumably, catalytic transformation takes place via ruthenium(II) hydride species being the active catalyst.

Abstract

Polymers containing π-conjugated segments are a diverse group of large molecules with semiconducting and emissive properties, with strong potential for use as active layers in Organic Light-Emitting Diodes (OLEDs). Stable blue-emitting materials, which are utilized as emissive layers in solution-processed OLED devices, are essential for their commercialization. Achieving balanced charge injection is challenging due to the wide bandgap between the HOMO and LUMO energy levels. This study examines the optical and photophysical characteristics of blue-emitting polymers to contribute to the understanding of the fundamental mechanisms of color purity and its stability during the operation of OLED devices. The investigated materials are a novel synthesized lab scale polymer, namely poly[(2,7-di(p-acetoxystyryl)-9-(2-ethylhexyl)-9H-carbazole-4,4′-diphenylsulfone)-co-poly(2,6-diphenylpyrydine-4,4′-diphenylsulfone] (CzCop), as well as three commercially supplied materials, namely Poly(9,9-di-n-octylfluorenyl-2,7-diyl) (PFO), poly[9,9-bis(2′-ethylhexyl) fluorene-2,7-diyl] (PBEHF), and poly (9,9-n-dihexyl-2,7-fluorene-alt-9-phenyl-3,6-carbazole) (F6PC). The materials were compared to evaluate their properties using Spectroscopic Ellipsometry, Photoluminescence, and Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM). Additionally, the electrical characteristics of the OLED devices were investigated, as well as the stability of the electroluminescence emission spectrum during the device’s operation. Finally, the determined optical properties, combined with their photo- and electro-emission characteristics, provided significant insights into the color stability and selectivity of each material.

Abstract

Learning is essential throughout human life. Accordingly, teachers and educators seek ways to strengthen learning. The use of play in the learning process seems to promote learning. Therefore, this research attempts to study how the integration of play in the learning process favors skills upgrading, using the quantitative research method and in particular the questionnaire. The sample consists of primary, secondary teachers and adult educators. In its context, variations in the attitudes of the participants in the sample arise, as regards their gender, the level of education, in which they work, and the years of service in it. The research results are in line with existing literature confirming the contribution of play to the improvement of skills and underline the need for further research and sensitization of the educational community so that it forms an integral part of the educational process, from formal up to adult education.

13. Fluorescent Aromatic Polyether Sulfones: Processable, Scalable, Efficient, and Stable Polymer Emitters and Their Single-Layer Polymer Light-Emitting Diodes

Abstract

In this study, fully aromatic polyether sulfones were developed, bearing blue, yellow, and orange–red π-conjugated semiconducting units. Carbazole-, anthracene-, and benzothiadiazole-based fluorophores are copolymerized with a diphenylsulfone moiety. A diphenylpyridine comonomer was additionally utilized, acting as both a solubilizing unit and a weak blue fluorescent group. Using this rationale, fluorescent polyarylethers with high molecular weights, up to 70 kDa, were developed, showing film formation ability and high thermal stability, while preserving excellent solubility in common organic, nonvolatile, and nonchlorinated solvents. Fine-tuning of the emission color was achieved through subtle changes of the comonomers’ type and ratio. Single-chromophore-bearing copolymers emitted in the blue or the yellow region of the visible spectrum, while the dual-chromophore-bearing terpolymers emitted throughout the visible spectrum, resulting in white light emission. Solutions of 20 wt% in polar aprotic solvents at ambient conditions allowed the deposition of fluorescent copolyethers and printing from non-chlorinated solvents. All polyethers were evaluated for their structural and optoelectronic properties, and selected copolymers were successfully used in the emitting layer (EML) of organic light-emitting diode (OLED) devices, using either rigid or flexible substrates. Remarkable color stability was displayed in all cases for up to 15 V of bias voltage. The Commission Internationale de L’Eclairage (CIE) of the fabricated devices is located in the blue (0.16, 0.16), yellow (0.44, 0.50), or white region of the visible spectrum (0.33, 0.38) with minimal changes according to the ratio of the comonomers. The versatile methodology toward semiconducting polyethersulfones for polymer light-emitting diodes (PLEDs) developed herein led to the scaled-up production of luminescent polymers of up to 25 g of high-molecular-weight single batches, demonstrating the effectiveness of this approach as a straightforward tool to facilitate the synthesis of flexible and printable EMLs for large-area PLED coverage.

21. Foot drop and fatigability in people with multiple sclerosis

Abstract

People with Multiple Sclerosis (pwMS) often experience walking impairments such as foot drop which can lead to trip and falls. Foot drop can be either transient and is often induced by exercise (fatigability) in pwMS whose walking ability is not affected and can become more fixed with disease progression. The overall aim of this PhD was to explore foot drop, its presence in pwMS with different disability levels and the psychometric properties of outcomes used to evaluate walking impairments. The first study in this thesis was a systematic review into the level of evidence for the psychometric properties of walking measures that have been used to evaluate the effect of assistive technology such as FES for foot drop in MS. Moderate to strong psychometric evidence was found for the Multiple Sclerosis Walking Scale, Timed 25 Foot Walk, 6 minute and 10 meter walk tests. There were no psychometric studies for three-dimensional (3D) gait kinematics in pwMS even though it was one of the most frequently used outcome measures. The second study assessed the test-retest reliability of 3D ankle kinematics and spatiotemporal parameters in pwMS, with low Expanded Disability Status Scale (EDSS < 3.5) and in those with moderate to high EDSS (EDSS: 4-6). Reliability was excellent for ankle kinematics and spatiotemporal parameters in both groups, with lower minimal detectable change (MDC95%) values in the low EDSS group compared to the higher EDSS group. The third study investigated transient exercise induced foot drop in highly physically active pwMS (EDSS < 3.5) and health controls using 3D kinematics. It was found that 6 out of 15 pwMS and none of the healthy controls presented this phenomenon. The fourth study examined the direct orthotic effect of FES during dual-tasking (i.e. walking combined with a cognitive task) and after inducing fatigability. Low to moderate effect sizes indicated that the direct orthotic effect was higher under dual-task and fatiguing conditions but this needs to be confirmed in appropriately powered studies. In conclusion, the studies in this thesis have contributed to the psychometric evidence of gait kinematics in pwMS, have objectively documented the presence of transient foot drop in highly physically active pwMS and orthotic effect of FES under a variety of conditions simulating the perceived benefits in ‘real life’ reported by FES users.

Through a literature review and secondary research on the internet, the aim of this paper is to investigate the dynamics of the internet presence of the producers, packers, traders, and online sellers of PDO dried figs in the Kymi and Taxiarchi regions of the Evia Regional Unit, Greece. With the use of big data, an attempt is made to identify internet users’ preferences concerning the dried figs. Suggestions for improved internet presence that will match demand with supply can be subsidised from EU regional development funds and contribute to the increase in internet sales of PDO Evia dried figs.

Furthermore, we aim to reveal possible connections between these findings regarding gender and intended choice of medical specialty. A total of 206 first year students (81 males and 125 females) enrolled in the University of Patras School of Medicine in 2017, were invited voluntarily to complete on paper the TEIQue-LF for assessing trait EI, the Zung Self-Rating Anxiety and Depression Scale, as well as a demographic questionnaire. Male medical students did not differ from females in global trait EI (p = 0.292), however they scored significantly higher on self-esteem (p = 0.019), emotion regulation (p = 0.013), social awareness (p = 0.046), stress management (p = 0.050) and sociability (p = 0.050). Female medical students (n = 125) reported significantly higher levels of anxiety (p < 0.001) and depression (p < 0.004), compared to males (n = 81). Students aiming to specialize in psychiatry, had significantly lower scores in Happiness (p < 0.003), Optimism (p < 0.002) and Well-being (p < 0.0011), and also scored significantly higher in anxiety (p < 0.029). Male medical students reported being significantly more self-confident, more socially competent and better regulating their stress and emotions compared to females, who seemed to have more anxiety and depression at the beginning of their studies. Students who aimed to pursue psychiatry as specialty had more anxiety symptoms, less self-esteem and were less happy. The findings support the need for enhancing EI attributes and remediating students&apos; mental health problems, particularly in students of a certain emotional profile.

Abstract Tetrathiomolybdate (TM) is a novel, copper-depleting compound associated with promising survival in a phase II study of patients with high-risk and triple-negative breast cancer. We sought to elucidate the mechanism of TM by exploring its effects on collagen processing and immune function in the tumor microenvironment (TME). Using an exploratory cohort, we identified markers of collagen processing (LOXL2, PRO-C3, C6M, and C1M) that differed between those with breast cancer versus controls. We measured these collagen biomarkers in TM-treated patients on the phase II study and detected evidence of decreased collagen cross-linking and increased degradation over formation in those without disease compared to those who experienced disease progression. Preclinical studies revealed decreased collagen deposition, lower levels of myeloid-derived suppressor cells, and higher CD4+ T-cell infiltration in TM-treated mice compared with controls. This study reveals novel mechanisms of TM targeting the TME and immune response with potential applications across cancer types.

Abstract

The present study attempted to translate and culturally adapt an established research instrument, the Hypoglycemia Fear Survey (HFS) questionnaire, to the Greek population and evaluate its validity and internal consistency so that it can be used for the assessment of hypoglycemia fear in Greek children and adolescents with T1DM and their parents. One hundred Greek children and adolescents with T1DM, 54 males, 6–18 years old, and one of their parents participated in this validation study. The participants completed the translated Greek HFS, which includes one version for children (CHFS) and one for parents (PHFS). Exploratory Factor Analysis (EFA) was used to assess construct validity. Internal consistency was assessed using Cronbach’s alpha, and convergent validity was established by estimating the correlation coefficients between the scores of the HFS scales/subscales and the different constructs of the Pediatric Quality of Life Inventory. The CHFS and PHFS exhibited adequate internal consistency for the total score and the Worry subscale, but lower consistency for the Behavior subscale. High test–retest reliability was also shown. We conclude that the Greek version of the HFS is a valid and reliable instrument to assess the fear of hypoglycemia in Greek children and adolescents with T1DM and their parents.

Abstract\nIMPLICATIONS FOR REHABILITATIONPurpose: Frame Running is an adapted community-based exercise option for people with moderate-to-severe walking impairments. This mixed-methods study aimed to examine the feasibility of 1) community-based Frame Running by young people with moderate-to-severe walking impairments and 2) conducting future studies on the impact of Frame Running on functional mobility and cardiometabolic disease risk factors.Materials and Methods: Weekly training sessions and data collection occurred in two sites. Quantitative data were collected at baseline, and after 12 (both sites) and 24 (one site) weeks of training, followed by interviews or focus groups. Consent and retention rates, attendance and outcome measure completion rates were calculated. Qualitative data were analysed abductively using concurrent inductive and deductive thematic content analysis. Data for the assessments at baseline, 12 and 24 weeks were available for 23, 15 and 5 participants respectively.Results: Participants were aged 5-25 with most diagnosed with cerebral palsy (GMFCS II-IV). Consent, intervention drop-out and adherence rates were 55%, 17% and 83% respectively with no serious adverse events. Outcome measure completion rates ranged between 60% and 98%. Themes related to facilitators to participating in Frame Running were mostly identified in the personal and social domains with barriers more common in the environmental and policy domains.Conclusions: The study results support the existing evidence that Frame Running is a safe and acceptable community-based exercise option for those with moderate-to-severe walking impairments. Themes identified in personal, social, environmental and policy domains can guide the implementation of community-based Frame Running participation. Abstract

Digitalization has transformed various sectors, including forestry, by introducing specialized digital tools and ICTs. This study explores the impact of digitalization on the Italian forestry sector, focusing on socio-economic indicators. Data on these indicators were gathered from the "National Forest Information System" (SINFor), while the digitalization level in Italian regions came from previous studies. The methods used included correlation analysis between digitalization and socio-economic indicators, along with linear regression models. The study also presents three digital progress scenarios, predicting significant socio-economic improvements with increased digitalization. The results show a strong correlation between digitalization and forestry indicators such as employment, value creation, and certification. These findings highlight the transformative potential of digitalization for sustainable forest management, emphasizing the need for further investment in digital infrastructure to boost productivity, inclusivity, and environmental conservation. The study also discusses challenges in fully understanding the effects of digitalization and suggests future research directions to examine specific technological features and broader industry impacts. Abstract

ABSTRACT Mental illness stigma is still a widespread phenomenon with damaging psychological and social consequences. This study is of relevance to the design of appropriate psychiatric services which reinforce the social integration of individuals living with mental illness. It investigates the relationship between contact, emotional intelligence (EI) and attitudes of the general population towards people with mental illness. This study utilized a random sampling method to collect data from 183 participants. Measures included the EI Scale for assessing EI, the level of contact (LOC) Report to examine the LOC with mental illness, and the Attitudes towards Mental Illness Scale to evaluate attitudes towards mental illness. Each of these instruments has been validated in previous research. Data analysis involved Pearson's correlation analysis, multiple linear regression, and mediation analysis to explore the relationships between variables. EI and particularly the abilities of use of emotion and other's emotional appraisal were associated with more positive attitudes towards mental illness. conversely, lower levels of contact were associated with higher levels of social care, indicating a complicated relationship between contact and attitudes. The findings highlight that a deeper understanding of the association between contact with individuals living with mental illness and attitudes towards them is needed, focusing on potential mechanisms that might modify this association. Additionally, a focal point that is underlined in this research is the important role of EI in affecting attitudes as it seems to offer promising directions in planning educational programs and stigma reduction interventions. Abstract

Polymers containing π-conjugated segments are a diverse group of large molecules with semiconducting and emissive properties, with strong potential for use as active layers in Organic Light-Emitting Diodes (OLEDs). Stable blue-emitting materials, which are utilized as emissive layers in solution-processed OLED devices, are essential for their commercialization. Achieving balanced charge injection is challenging due to the wide bandgap between the HOMO and LUMO energy levels. This study examines the optical and photophysical characteristics of blue-emitting polymers to contribute to the understanding of the fundamental mechanisms of color purity and its stability during the operation of OLED devices. The investigated materials are a novel synthesized lab scale polymer, namely poly[(2,7-di(p-acetoxystyryl)-9-(2-ethylhexyl)-9H-carbazole-4,4′-diphenylsulfone)-co-poly(2,6-diphenylpyrydine-4,4′-diphenylsulfone] (CzCop), as well as three commercially supplied materials, namely Poly(9,9-di-n-octylfluorenyl-2,7-diyl) (PFO), poly[9,9-bis(2′-ethylhexyl) fluorene-2,7-diyl] (PBEHF), and poly (9,9-n-dihexyl-2,7-fluorene-alt-9-phenyl-3,6-carbazole) (F6PC). The materials were compared to evaluate their properties using Spectroscopic Ellipsometry, Photoluminescence, and Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM). Additionally, the electrical characteristics of the OLED devices were investigated, as well as the stability of the electroluminescence emission spectrum during the device's operation. Finally, the determined optical properties, combined with their photo- and electro-emission characteristics, provided significant insights into the color stability and selectivity of each material.
