Since water quality monitoring can be rather costly, it is important to properly design the monitoring network so that maximum information can be received with moderate effort. One component of monitoring is measuring the phytoplankton community composition and detecting whether that has changed. From April to October 2012, by using ships-of-opportunity (SOOP), we collected simultaneous samples from 15 stations in the Gulf of Finland and the Baltic Proper to study the spatial variability in the phytoplankton species composition and biomass throughout the growing season. Assessments of the environmental status of the Baltic Sea as called for by the Marine Strategy Framework Directive (MSFD) must be based on a set of indicators. A pre-core indicator is the diatom/dinoflagellate index (Dia/Dino index), which reflects the dominance of diatoms or dinoflagellates during the phytoplankton spring bloom. Here we explain the principles of the Dia/Dino index and the conditions for its calculation using examples from two very different water bodies, the Eastern Gotland Basin and Kiel Bay. The index is based on seasonal mean diatom and dinoflagellate biomass values. A precondition for its applicability is the coverage of the bloom. As a criterion, the maximum value of diatom or dinoflagellate biomass has to exceed a predefined threshold, e.g., 1000 μg/L in the investigated areas. If this condition is not fulfilled, an alternative Dia/Dino index can be calculated based on silicate consumption data. Changes in the dominance of these two phytoplankton classes impact the food web because both their quality as a food source for grazers and their periods of occurrence differ. If diatoms are dominant, their rapid sinking reduces the food stock for zooplankton but delivers plenty of food to the zoobenthos. Consequently, the Dia/Dino index can be used to follow the food pathway (Descriptor 4 of MSFD: “food web”). Moreover, a low Dia/Dino index may indicate silicate limitation caused by eutrophication (Descriptor 5 of MSFD: “eutrophication”). The Dia/Dino index was able to identify the regime shift that occurred at the end of the 1980s in the Baltic Proper. Diatom dominance, and thus a high Dia/Dino index, are typical in historical data and are therefore assumed to reflect good environmental status (GES). In assessments of the environmental status of the Eastern Gotland Basin and Kiel Bay, Dia/Dino index GES thresholds of 0.5 and 0.75, respectively, are suggested. The GES thresholds as calculated by the alternative Dia/Dino index are 0.84 and 0.94, respectively.

The response of nutrient and chlorophyll fields to climate change by the end of the twenty-first century was evaluated in the Gulf of Finland (Baltic Sea) using comparison of a hindcast simulation for 1997–2006 and future climate forcing, assuming an A1B greenhouse gas emission scenario and business-as-usual riverine nutrient load for 2090–2099. The comparison of simulated oxygen, phosphate and nitrate levels from the hindcast model with the measurements indicated a good performance of the 3D ecosystem model, except for overestimated near-bottom layer nitrates. The mean chlorophyll level was slightly overestimated by the model, whereas the variability in the surface layer chlorophyll level was well reproduced. Future projection simulations indicate no considerable changes in the upper layer oxygen concentrations compared with the hindcast simulation and observations, but deeper near-bottom layers were projected to become anoxic, causing an increase in phosphate and a decrease in nitrate concentrations in these layers. The increase in surface layer phosphate and the decrease in nitrate concentrations lead to an increase in summer cyanobacteria blooms and an increase in nitrogen fixation, which therefore led to an increase in the annual mean chlorophyll content in the upper layer.

A novel approach for estimating phytoplankton biodiversity – ICES Journal of Marine Science, 70: 408–417. Maintaining biodiversity is one of the main priorities in environmental protection. The biodiversity of phytoplankton, the key primary producers in the marine ecosystem, is, however, often very difficult to estimate, since the phytoplankton assemblage includes a vast number of taxa, many of which occur in such small quantities that they may not be recorded in routine sampling. Moreover, many taxa cannot be identified to species level by routine methods such as light microscopy of preserved samples, even by a skilled taxonomist. This means that, in general, we cannot assume to have a complete list of species in the ecosystem at any given point in time. In this paper, we present an approach for evaluating phytoplankton biodiversity in spite of this challenge. Since eutrophication, which increases phytoplankton biomass, has been identified as the most important factor causing degradation of the Baltic Sea ecosystem, the proposed approach was evaluated against total phytoplankton biomass. When phytoplankton biomass was low, both low and high biodiversity values were observed, and, as the phytoplankton biomass increased, the high biodiversity values disappeared. These results were consistent both using data based on individual samples and using yearly sampling station averages.

Alien species contribute to global change in all marine ecosystems. Environmental variability can affect species distribution and population sizes, and is therefore expected to influence alien species. In this study, we have investigated temporal variability of 11 alien species representing different trophic levels and ecological functions in two gulfs of the brackish Baltic Sea in relation to environmental change. Independent of the invasion time, organism group or the life-history stage, abundance and/or biomass of the investigated alien species was either stable or displayed abrupt increases over time. Timing in population shifts was species-specific and exhibited no generic patterns, indicating that the observed large shifts in environmental parameters have no uniform consequences to the alien biota. In general, the inter-annual dynamics of alien and native species was not largely different, though native species tended to exhibit more diverse variability patterns compared to the alien species. There were no key environmental factors that affected most of the alien species, instead, the effects varied among the studied gulfs and species. Non-indigenous species have caused prominent structural changes in invaded communities as a result of exponential increase in the most recent invasions, as well as increased densities of the already established alien species.

There are very few time series documenting clear trends of change in the biomass of total phytoplankton or single taxa that coincide with trends of increasing nutrient concentrations. Weekly or biweekly monitoring since 1997 on a cross section of the central Gulf of Finland (NE Baltic Sea) with similar climatic and hydrographic conditions, but different nutrient levels, provided a uniform dataset. In order to evaluate seasonal (June–September) patterns of phytoplankton succession, more than 1,200 samples were statistically analyzed by selecting 12 dominant taxa using wet weight biomass values. In addition, the continuously measured hydrographic parameters on board the ships of opportunity, and simultaneous nutrient analyses gave high frequency information on the water masses. The objective of this study was to identify the taxa that may prove indicative in the assessment of eutrophication in the appropriate monitoring time periods. None of the most common bloom-forming species (Aphanizomenon sp., Nodularia spumigena, and Heterocapsa triquetra) showed reliable correlations with enhanced nutrient concentrations. The species we suggest as reliable eutrophication indicators—oscillatorialean cyanobacteria and the diatoms Cyclotella choctawhatcheeana and Cylindrotheca closterium—showed the best relationships with total phosphorus concentrations. Their maxima appear toward the end of July or in August–September when phytoplankton community structure is more stable, and less frequent observations may give adequate results. Another diatom, Skeletonema costatum, exhibited stronger correlations with dissolved inorganic and total nitrogen in June, during the period of the summer phytoplankton minimum.

Although the Chinese mitten crab Eriocheir sinensis (H. Milne-Edwards, 1853) (Crustacea, Decapoda, Varunidae) invaded the Baltic Sea about 80 years ago, published information on its present distribution and abundance in this region is lacking. We provide here information on its Baltic-wide distribution and long-term population dynamics. The species has been found all over the coastal Baltic Sea and also in some adjacent rivers and lakes. The Chinese mitten crab appears to have increased in abundance in recent years in the northeastern part of the Baltic Sea (Gulf of Finland, Gulf of Riga, northern Baltic Proper). Higher catch rates were observed in spring (April–June) and autumn (September–November). The size variation of crabs in different samples was low (mean carapace width 6.1–6.3 cm). Despite findings of gravid females, the reproduction of the mitten crab in the central, northern and eastern Baltic region is considered unlikely due to low salinity and the individuals caught are assumed to actively migrate into the region from the species’ main European distribution area (southeastern North Sea), certainly over 1500 km migration distance. Thus, the dynamics of the North Sea population is probably regulating, at least in part, the occurrence of the Chinese mitten crab in the Baltic Sea area.

During the latest years medium-sized (15–30 lm), single-celled dinoflagellates have been reported to form blooms in the northern Baltic Proper and the Gulf of Finland in winter and spring. Recent studies (Kremp et al., 2003. Proceedings of the 7th International conference of Modern and Fossil Dinoflagellates, September 21–25, Nagasaki, Japan, 66 pp.) indicate that those blooms are caused by two isomorphic species – Scrippsiella hangoei (Schiller) Larsen, and a new species, tentatively belonging to the genus Woloszynskia. Until now there has been no report on how widely distributed these phytoplankton species are in the Baltic Sea. In this study, the occurrence of Scrippsiella/Woloszynskia complex in the entire Baltic Sea was investigated, by using monitoring data from 1997 to 2003. The species occurred in a salinity range from 2 to 8 PSU. Highest concentrations were observed at salinity 4.5–6.5 PSU. Maximum cell densities of Scrippsiella/Woloszynskia complex in the water column were mainly obtained in April or in the beginning of May by the water temperature 6 � C. Bloom formations in the Baltic Proper and in the Gulf of Finland may not only be explained by optimum temperature and salinity, but also with other factors e.g. high nutrient concentrations and good seeding conditions from the sediments.

The spatially heterogeneous character of aquatic life and rapid changes in pelagic communities make it difficult to assess the status of the marine environment using traditional monitoring methods. In order to distinguish between human induced and natural changes in the ecosystem the environmental parameters and the factors affecting them need to be monitored at a wide range of temporal and spatial scales. The capacity of any single monitoring method or strategy should not be overestimated. Instead, different methods complement each other. In the Baltic Sea high frequency recordings of phytoplankton biomass and related environmental parameters (temperature, salinity, nutrients, chlorophyll a) in the near surface layer (4–5m) have been conducted with unattended water sampling onboard several commercial ferries over the last 14 years. The collected data have been used for delivery of almost on-line information for environmental authorities and public, for developing HELCOM indicator fact-sheets and indexes/maps characterising inter-annual and short-term changes of productivity and phytoplankton biomass in different sea areas, and for forecasts of algae blooms. The combination of high frequency automated sampling onboard merchant ships with satellite imagery, traditional sampling and meteorological information has increased the understanding of ecological processes in the Baltic Sea.

FerryBox monitoring provides cost-effective means to study the coastal ocean. In the Baltic Sea, FerryBox measurements have been conducted already for three decades. Despite the lack of formal structuration of the network, the Baltic FerryBox community has been interacting and collaborating actively in the maintenance of systems, in calibration of sensors, extending the suite of measured variables, and in improving the overall quality of measurements. However, the emerging needs for improving the consistency and availability of data and products call for better structuration of collaboration. EU funded JERICO-RI (Joint European Research Infrastructure of Coastal Observatories) provides a pan-European framework to improve the regional networking and transnational harmonization. Here we provide an overview of current collaborations within Baltic FerryBox community and an outlook for next actions, to be tested during JERICO-RI Pilot Supersite demonstration phase in 2021-22.
