Abstract

We have investigated radio-frequency single-electron transistor (RF-SET) operation of single-walled carbon nanotube quantum dots in the strong tunneling regime. At 4.2 K and carrier frequency 754.2 MHz, we reach a charge sensitivity of 2.3e-6 e/Hz^(1/2) over a bandwidth of 85 MHz. Our results indicate a gain-bandwidth product of 3.7e13 Hz^(3/2)/e, which is by one order of magnitude better than for typical RF-SETs., Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures

Abstract

We investigate the effect of Zeeman-splitting on quasiparticle transport in normal-superconducting-normal (NSN) aluminum single electron transistors (SETs). In the above-gap transport the interplay of Coulomb blockade and Zeeman-splitting leads to spin-dependence of the sequential tunneling. This creates regimes where either one or both spin species can tunnel onto or off the island. At lower biases, spin-dependence of the single quasiparticle state is studied and operation of the device as a bipolar spin filter is suggested., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures

5. Dependence of Curie Temperature on the Thickness of Epitaxial (Ga,Mn)As Film

Abstract

We present the magnetotransport properties of very thin (5 to 15 nm) single (Ga,Mn)As layers grown by low temperature molecular beam epitaxy. A lower (Ga,Mn)As thickness limit of 5 nm for the ferromagnetic phase and the dependence of the Curie temperature on (Ga,Mn)As thickness are determined from electrical transport measurements. The Curie temperature is determined to be 97 K for the thinnest ferromagnetic sample and is found to decrease for increasing layer thickness. A carrier density of ~7.1$\times10^{20}$ cm$^{-3}$ for the 5 nm thick (Ga,Mn)As layer is determined from Hall measurements. Differences between magnetotransport properties of thick and thin (Ga,Mn)As layers are observed and discussed., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures

Abstract

We report calibrated microwave transmission and reflection measurements of a qubit sample holder at millikelvin temperatures. The methodology we present extends our previous work on one-port cryogenic short–open–load (SOL) calibration to a two-port SOLT measurement by implementing an unknown thru (T) standard. We report the resulting calibrated transmission and reflection at millikelvin temperatures through a printed circuit board that is installed into the sample holder. Finally, we consider a cascade of components at the end of a qubit drive line that includes (1) a cryogenic attenuator, (2) a coaxial cable, and (3) a qubit sample holder. Using experimentally determined parameters for return losses for all three components, we calculate the negligible state-preparation error in the frequency band of 5–7 GHz due to control pulse distortions arising from reflection at the coaxial launches. Taken together, our results highlight the utility of calibrated cryogenic scattering parameter measurements for the validation of qubit packaging and the wiring in its immediate vicinity. 14. Basic Experiments in Telecommunications.

Abstract

Presented is a set of laboratory experiments developed to provide students with demonstrations and hands-on experiences with a variety of basic communications methods. These experiments may be used with students who have training in engineering, as well as those with social sciences who have no engineering background. Detailed exercises dealing with the oscilloscope and the spectrum analyzer are provided for those students lacking a technical background. It is assumed that the laboratory will be taken with a theory course in basic electrical engineering, simple mathematics, and communication theory. Each experiment requires a lecture and a short demonstration preceding the exercise, as well as considerable help and advice during the laboratory period. (Author/SK)
