Most studies of animal coloration focus on spectral colours, which are colours evoked by single peaks within the wavelengths of visible light. It is poorly understood how non-spectral colours (those produced by a combination of reflectance peaks) are produced, despite their potential significance to both animal communication and biomimicry. Moreover, although both pigmentary and structural colour production mechanisms have been well characterized in feathers independently, their interactions have received considerably less attention, despite their potential to broaden the available colour spectrum. Here, we investigate the colour production mechanisms of the purple feathers of the purple-breasted cotinga (Cotinga cotinga). The purple feather colour results from both the coherent scattering of light by a sphere-type nanomatrix of β-keratin and air (spongy layer) in the barbs, which produces a blue–green colour, and the selective absorption of light in the centre of the bird-visible spectrum by the methoxy-carotenoid, cotingin. This unusual combination of carotenoid and nanostructure with a central air vacuole, in the absence of melanin, is a blueprint of a synergistic way to produce a non-spectral colour that would be difficult to achieve with only a single colour production mechanism.

Tailoring the solution chemistry of metal halide perovskites requires a detailed understanding of precursor aggregation and coordination. In this work, we use various scattering techniques, including dynamic light scattering (DLS), small angle neutron scattering (SANS), and spin-echo SANS (SESANS) to probe the nanostructures from 1 nm to 10 μm within two different lead-halide perovskite solution inks (MAPbI 3and a triple-cation mixed-halide perovskite). We find that DLS can misrepresent the size distribution of the colloidal dispersion and use SANS/SESANS to confirm that these perovskite solutions are mostly comprised of 1-2 nm-sized particles. We further conclude that if there are larger colloids present, their concentration must be 3solutions age more drastically than triple cation solutions.

Structural colours, produced by the reflection of light from ultrastructures, have evolved multiple times in butterflies. Unlike pigmentary colours and patterns, little is known about the genetic basis of these colours. Reflective structures on wing-scale ridges are responsible for iridescent structural colour in many butterflies, including the Müllerian mimics Heliconius erato and Heliconius melpomene. Here, we quantify aspects of scale ultrastructure variation and colour in crosses between iridescent and non-iridescent subspecies of both of these species and perform quantitative trait locus (QTL) mapping. We show that iridescent structural colour has a complex genetic basis in both species, with offspring from crosses having a wide variation in blue colour (both hue and brightness) and scale structure measurements. We detect two different genomic regions in each species that explain modest amounts of this variation, with a sex-linked QTL in H. erato but not H. melpomene. We also find differences between species in the relationships between structure and colour, overall suggesting that these species have followed different evolutionary trajectories in their evolution of structural colour. We then identify genes within the QTL intervals that are differentially expressed between subspecies and/or wing regions, revealing likely candidates for genes controlling structural colour formation. A range of amphiphilic statistical copolymers is synthesized where the hydrophilic component is either methacrylic acid (MAA) or 2-(dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate (DMAEMA) and the hydrophobic component comprises methyl, ethyl, butyl, hexyl, or 2-ethylhexyl methacrylate, which provide a broad range of partition coefficients (log P). Small-angle X-ray scattering studies confirm that these amphiphilic copolymers self-assemble to form well-defined spherical nanoparticles in an aqueous solution, with more hydrophobic copolymers forming larger nanoparticles. Varying the nature of the alkyl substituent also influenced self-assembly with more hydrophobic comonomers producing larger nanoparticles at a given copolymer composition. A model based on particle surface charge density (PSC model) is used to describe the relationship between copolymer composition and nanoparticle size. This model assumes that the hydrophilic monomer is preferentially located at the particle surface and provides a good fit to all of the experimental data. More specifically, a linear relationship is observed between the surface area fraction covered by the hydrophilic comonomer required to achieve stabilization and the log P value for the hydrophobic comonomer. Contrast variation small-angle neutron scattering is used to study the internal structure of these nanoparticles. This technique indicates partial phase separation within the nanoparticles, with about half of the available hydrophilic comonomer repeat units being located at the surface and hydrophobic comonomer-rich cores. This information enables a refined PSC model to be developed, which indicates the same relationship between the surface area fraction of the hydrophilic comonomer and the log P of the hydrophobic comonomer repeat units for the anionic (MAA) and cationic (DMAEMA) comonomer systems. This study demonstrates how nanoparticle size can be readily controlled and predicted using relatively ill-defined statistical copolymers, making such systems a viable attractive alternative to diblock copolymer nanoparticles for a range of industrial applications.

The use of processing additives to optimize the active layer morphology in organic solar cells (OSCs) is a simple and impactful way to improve photovoltaic performance. However, the retention of high boiling point liquid additives affects the stability and lifetime of OSCs, necessitating the development of volatilizable additives that can improve efficiency at no cost of the long-term device stability. In this study, three novel volatilizable solid additives, INB-1F, INB-3F, and INB-5F, with different degrees of fluorination, are rationally designed, synthesized and added into photovoltaic solutions to fabricate OSCs. These additives evaporate upon moderate thermal annealing and exhibit higher volatility as the number of fluorine atoms increases. Our device studies show that these additives can enhance the efficiency of PBDB-T-2F:BTP-4F binary cells from 15.2% to 16.5%, and that of PBDB-T-2F:IT-4F from 12.1% to 13.4%. Molecular dynamics simulations reveal attractive interactions between these additives and the non-fullerene acceptor BTP-4F, leading to enhanced intermolecular π–π stacking among BTP-4Fs, which is a favorable morphological change that we attribute to the origin of the enhanced performance and long-term stability. Our work presents a novel strategy to design new solid additives to replace liquid additives toward efficient and stable OSCs.

Metal–organic framework nanosheets (MONs) are an emerging class of two-dimensional materials whose diverse and readily tunable structures make them ideal for use in optoelectronic applications. Here, liquid exfoliation is used to synthesize ultrathin zinc-porphyrin based MONs with electronic and optical properties ideally suited for incorporation into a polythiophene–fullerene (P3HT–PCBM) organic solar cell. Remarkably, the addition of MONs to the photoactive layer of a photovoltaic device results in a power conversion efficiency of 5.2%, almost twice that for reference devices without nanosheets with a simultaneous improvement of Jsc, Voc and FF. Our analysis indicates that the complimentary electronic, optical and structural properties of the MONs allows them to act as a surface to template the crystallization of P3HT leading to a doubling of the absorbance, a tenfold increase in hole mobility and reduced grain size. These results demonstrate the potential of MONs as a tunable class of two-dimensional materials for enhancing the performance of a broad range of organic solar cells and other electronic devices.

Promoting cell proliferation is the cornerstone of most tissue regeneration therapies. As platelet-based applications promote cell division and can be customised for tissue-specific efficacy, this makes them strong candidates for developing novel regenerative therapies. Therefore, the aim of this study was to determine if platelet releasate could be optimised to promote cellular proliferation and differentiation of specific tissues. Growth factors in platelet releasate were profiled for physiological and supraphysiological platelet concentrations. We analysed the effect of physiological and supraphysiological releasate on C2C12 skeletal myoblasts, H9C2 rat cardiomyocytes, human dermal fibroblasts (HDF), HaCaT keratinocytes, and chondrocytes. Cellular proliferation and differentiation were assessed through proliferation assays, mRNA, and protein expression. We show that supraphysiological releasate is not simply a concentrated version of physiological releasate. Physiological releasate promoted C2C12, HDF, and chondrocyte proliferation with no effect on H9C2 or HaCaT cells. Supraphysiological releasate induced stronger proliferation in C2C12 and HDF cells compared with physiological releasate. Importantly, supraphysiological releasate induced proliferation of H9C2 cells. The proliferative effects of skeletal and cardiac muscle cells were in part driven by vascular endothelial growth factor alpha. Furthermore, supraphysiological releasate induced differentiation of H9C2 and C2C12, HDF, and keratinocytes. This study provides insights into the ability of releasate to promote muscle, heart, skin, and cartilage cell proliferation and differentiation and highlights the importance of optimising releasate composition for tissue-specific regeneration.

Curved X‐ray detectors have the potential to revolutionize diverse sectors due to benefits such as reduced image distortion and vignetting compared to their planar counterparts. While the use of inorganic semiconductors for curved detectors are restricted by their brittle nature, organic–inorganic hybrid semiconductors which incorporated bismuth oxide nanoparticles in an organic bulk heterojunction consisting of poly(3‐hexylthiophene‐2,5‐diyl) (P3HT) and [6,6]‐phenyl C71 butyric acid methyl ester (PC70BM) are considered to be more promising in this regard. However, the influence of the P3HT molecular weight on the mechanical stability of curved, thick X‐ray detectors remains less well understood. Herein, high P3HT molecular weights (>40 kDa) are identified to allow increased intermolecular bonding and chain entanglements, resulting in X‐ray detectors that can be curved to a radius as low as 1.3 mm with low deviation in X‐ray response under 100 repeated bending cycles while maintaining an industry‐standard dark current of, Solution processable organic–inorganic hybrid semiconductors for flexible curved X‐ray detector components have the potential to revolutionize diverse sectors in terms of its cost and performance. This work introduces a strategy for realizing the optimum balance for detector performance at low operating voltages with mechanical flexibility by tuning the organic semiconductor molecular weight for such curved hybrid detectors.

Background We have shown previously that low‐density lipoprotein (LDL) can be oxidized in the lysosomes of macrophages, that this oxidation can be inhibited by cysteamine, an antioxidant that accumulates in lysosomes, and that this drug decreases atherosclerosis in LDL receptor–deficient mice fed a high‐fat diet. We have now performed a regression study with cysteamine, which is of more relevance to the treatment of human disease. Methods and Results LDL receptor–deficient mice were fed a high‐fat diet to induce atherosclerotic lesions. They were then reared on chow diet and drinking water containing cysteamine or plain drinking water. Aortic atherosclerosis was assessed, and samples of liver and skeletal muscle were analyzed. There was no regression of atherosclerosis in the control mice, but cysteamine caused regression of between 32% and 56% compared with the control group, depending on the site of the lesions. Cysteamine substantially increased markers of lesion stability, decreased ceroid, and greatly decreased oxidized phospholipids in the lesions. The liver lipid levels and expression of cluster of differentiation 68, acetyl–coenzyme A acetyltransferase 2, cytochromes P450 (CYP)27, and proinflammatory cytokines and chemokines were decreased by cysteamine. Skeletal muscle function and oxidative fibers were increased by cysteamine. There were no changes in the plasma total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, high‐density lipoprotein cholesterol, or triacylglycerol concentrations attributable to cysteamine. Conclusions Inhibiting the lysosomal oxidation of LDL in atherosclerotic lesions by antioxidants targeted at lysosomes causes the regression of atherosclerosis and improves liver and muscle characteristics in mice and might be a promising novel therapy for atherosclerosis in patients.

Novel carbon adsorbents for propane/propylene separation, with an unprecedented adsorption selectivity to propane – the minority component – were prepared from a phenolic resin precursor. The preparation conditions of the carbon molecular sieve adsorbents, such as pre-treatment with phosphoric acid; carbonization and post-treatment with propylene, were carefully investigated concerning their role on the separation performance. The best performing sample, MFF_8, was characterized by SEM, FTIR and small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS). It was concluded that the pre-treatment with phosphoric acid was critical for obtaining the propane/propylene separation performance – adsorption ratio of ca. 2 at 1 bar and 25 °C; this sample was carbonized at 1100 °C and post-treated with propylene during 12 days. SAXS analysis indicates rod-shaped pores for the MFF_8 sample with a bimodal size distribution with averages of 0.4 nm and 3.7 nm, and HRTEM images show a network of earthworm micropores. The adsorption selectivity of this adsorbent to propane was assigned to the shape and size of the pores and the rigidity of propylene compared with propane for worming through the constriction of the ultra-micropores network. To the best knowledge of the authors, this is the first time a carbon molecular sieve (CMS) adsorbent with rod-shaped pores is reported. This new family of CMS adsorbents show great potential for equilibrium and kinetic based separations of adsorbates displaying different worming performances.

X-ray ptychography has revolutionised nanoscale phase contrast imaging at large-scale synchrotron sources in recent years. We present here the first successful demonstration of the technique in a small-scale laboratory setting. We conducted an experiment with a liquid metal-jet X-ray source and a single photon-counting detector with a high spectral resolution. The experiment used a spot size of 5 microns to produce a ptychographic phase image of a Siemens star test pattern with a sub-micron spatial resolution. Cyphochilus beetle scales are amongst the brightest structural whites in nature, being highly opacifying whilst extremely thin. However, the formation mechanism for the voided intra-scale structure is unknown. Here we report 3D x-ray nanotomography data for the voided chitin networks of intact white scales of Cyphochilus and Lepidiota stigma. Chitin-filling fractions are found to be 31 ± 2% for Cyphochilus and 34 ± 1% for Lepidiota stigma, indicating previous measurements overestimated their density. Optical simulations using finite-difference time domain for the chitin morphologies and simulated Cahn-Hilliard spinodal structures show excellent agreement. Reflectance curves spanning filling fraction of 5-95% for simulated spinodal structures, pinpoint optimal whiteness for 25% chitin filling. We make a simulacrum from a polymer undergoing a strong solvent quench, resulting in highly reflective (~94%) white films. In-situ X-ray scattering confirms the nanostructure is formed through spinodal decomposition phase separation. We conclude that the ultra-white beetle scale nanostructure is made via liquid–liquid phase separation. White beetle scales strongly scatter white light, whilst being very thin. Here, the authors measured the internal scale nanostructure for the beetles, Cyphochilus and L. stigma, and demonstrate that the optical structure can be simulated using liquid–liquid phase separation nanostructures, pointing to this as the formation mechanism.

Hybrid inorganic-in-organic semiconductors are an attractive class of materials for optoelectronic applications. Traditionally, the thicknesses of organic semiconductors are kept below 1 μm due to poor charge transport in such systems. However, recent work suggests that charge carriers in such organic semiconductors can be transported over centimeter length scales opposing this view. In this work, a unipolar X-ray photoconductor based on a bulk heterojunction architecture, consisting of poly(3-hexylthiophene), a C70 derivative, and high atomic number bismuth oxide nanoparticles operating in the 0.1–1 mm thickness regime is demonstrated, having a high sensitivity of ∼160 μC mGy–1 cm–3. The high performance enabled by hole drift lengths approaching a millimeter facilitates a device architecture allowing a high fraction of the incident X-rays to be attenuated. An X-ray imager is demonstrated with sufficient resolution for security applications such as portable baggage screening at border crossings and public events and scalable medical applications.

Mixed-halide perovskites prepared from methylammonium iodide and lead chloride (MAPbI 3-x Cl x ) precursors are becoming increasingly well understood, however the effect of non-stoichiometry in this system is still not clear. Here, we create MAPbI 3-x Cl x perovskites from starting mixtures containing an excess of MAI, and study them using a variety of structural and optical probes. Using grazing incidence X-ray scattering (GIWAXS) we demonstrate the existence of non-perovskite structures, and show that addition of hydroiodic acid (HI) also leads to similar low-dimensional phase formation. Photoluminescence spectroscopy performed at cryogenic temperatures indicates the existence of multiple emissive states between 510 nm and 605 nm resulting from a low dimensional phase (LDP) or multiple phases. By mapping the distribution of luminescence across the surface with submicron resolution, we found strong co-localisation of LDP emissive states. At certain blend ratios, emission is seen from both LDP states and methylammonium lead iodide perovskite (around 770 nm). Photoluminescence excitation spectroscopy of mixed-phase films reveals energy transfer, or a cascade, between different LDP states, but this process only occurs inefficiently to the surrounding perovskite. Time-resolved photoluminescence measurements demonstrate that LDP excited-state lifetimes decrease as a function of increasing temperature; a process consistent with a thermally-activated charge transfer process. Our work suggests that non-stoichiometric materials prepared via this processing route can lead to the formation of metastable LDPs with unique material properties that merit further investigation.

We report the need for careful selection of anti-solvents for Sn-based perovskite solar cells fabricated through the commonly used anti-solvent method, compared to their Pb-based counterparts. This, in combination with the film processing conditions used, enables the complete removal of unwanted Sn4+ dopants, through engineering the anti-solvent method for Sn-based perovskites. Using a Cs0.05(FA0.83MA0.17)0.95Pb0.5Sn0.5I3 perovskite, charge carrier mobilities of 32 ± 3 cm2 V−1 s−1 (the highest reported for such systems through the optical-pump terahertz probe technique) together with ∼28 mA cm−2 short circuit current densities are achieved. A champion efficiency of 11.6% was obtained for solvent extraction using toluene (an 80% enhancement in efficiency compared to the other anti-solvents) which is further improved to 12.04% following optimised anti-solvent wash and thermal treatment. Our work highlights the importance of anti-solvents in managing defects for high efficiency low bandgap perovskite materials and develops the potential for all-perovskite tandem solar cells.

However, the quality of the reconstructed tomogram is often obscured by noise and therefore not suitable for automatic segmentation. Filtering methods are often required for a detailed quantitative analysis. However, most filters induce blurring in the reconstructed tomograms. Here, machine learning (ML) techniques offer a powerful alternative to conventional filtering methods. In this article, we verify that a self-supervised denoising ML technique can be used in a very efficient way for eliminating noise from nano­tomography data. The technique presented is applied to high-resolution nano­tomography data and compared to conventional filters, such as a median filter and a nonlocal means filter, optimized for tomographic data sets. The ML approach proves to be a very powerful tool that outperforms conventional filters by eliminating noise without blurring relevant structural features, thus enabling efficient quantitative analysis in different scientific fields., Published by Wiley-Blackwell, [S.l.]

The self-assembly of ultra-high molecular weight (UHMW) block copolymers (BCPs) remains a complex and time-consuming endeavor owing to the high kinetic penalties associated with long polymer chain entanglement. In this work, we report a unique strategy of overcoming these kinetic barriers through precision solvent annealing of an UHMW polystyrene-block-poly(2-vinylpyridine) BCP system (Mw: ∼800 kg/mol) by fast swelling to very high levels of solvent concentration (ϕs). Phase separation on timescales of ∼10 min is demonstrated once a thickness-dependent threshold ϕs value of ∼0.80–0.86 is achieved, resulting in lamellar feature spacings of over 190 nm. The threshold ϕs value was found to be greater for films with higher dry thickness (D0) values. Tunability of the domain morphology is achieved through controlled variation of both D0 and ϕs, with the kinetically unstable hexagonal perforated lamellar (HPL) phase observed at ϕs values of ∼0.67 and D0 values of 59–110 nm. This HPL phase can be controllably induced into an order–order transition to a lamellar morphology upon further increase of ϕs to 0.80 or above. As confirmed by grazing-incidence small-angle X-ray scattering, the lateral ordering of the lamellar domains is shown to improve with increasing ϕs up to a maximum value at which the films transition to a disordered state. Thicker films are shown to possess a higher maximum ϕs value before transitioning to a disordered state. The swelling rate is shown to moderately influence the lateral ordering of the phase-separated structures, while the amount of hold time at a particular value of ϕs does not notably enhance the phase separation process. These large period self-assembled lamellar domains are then employed to facilitate pattern transfer using a liquid-phase infiltration method, followed by plasma etching, generating ordered, high aspect ratio Si nanowall structures with spacings of ∼190 nm and heights of up to ∼500 nm. This work underpins the feasibility of a room-temperature, solvent-based annealing approach for the reliable and scalable fabrication of sub-wavelength nanostructures via BCP lithography.

In a proof‐of‐concept study, this work demonstrates that incorporating a specifically designed block copolymer as an interfacial layer between a charge transport layer and the photoactive layer in organic solar cells can enhance the interface between these layers leading to both performance and stability improvements of the device. This is achieved by incorporating a P3HT50‐b‐PSSx block copolymer as an interfacial layer between the hole transporting and photoactive layers, which results in the improvement of the interfacial roughness, energy level alignment, and stability between these layers. Specifically, the incorporation of a 10 nm P3HT50‐b‐PSS16 and a 13 nm P3HT50‐b‐PSS23 interfacial layer results in a 9% and a 12% increase in device efficiency respectively compared to the reference devices. In addition to having a higher initial efficiency, the devices with the block copolymer continue to have a higher normalized efficiency than the control devices after 2200 h of storage, demonstrating that the block copolymer not only improves device efficiency, but crucially, prevents degradation by stabilizing the interface between the hole transporting layer and the photoactive layer. This study proves that appropriately designed and optimized block copolymers can simultaneously stabilize and improve the efficiency of organic solar cells.

High resolution X-ray nano-tomography experiments are often limited to a few tens of micrometer size volumes due to detector size. It is possible, through the use of multiple overlapping tomography scans, to produce a large area scan which can encompass a sample in its entirety. Mounting and positioning regions to be scanned is highly challenging and normally requires focused ion beam approaches. In this work we have imaged intact beetle scale cells mounted on the tip of a needle using a micromanipulator stage. Here we show X-ray holotomography data for single ultra-white scales from the beetles Lepidiota stigma (L. stigma) and Cyphochilus which exhibit the most effective scattering of white light in the literature. The final thresholded matrices represent a scan area of 25 × 70 × 362.5 µm and 25 × 67.5 × 235µm while maintaining a pixel resolution of 25 nm. We have studied bulk-heterojunction (BHJ) solar cells composed of the polymer PffBT4T-2OD as electron donor and three different electron accepting fullerenes, namely PC71BM, PC61BM and indene-C60-bis-adduct (ICBA) in order to understand the impact of different fullerenes on the morphology and efficiency of the corresponding photovoltaic devices. Despite PffBT4T-2OD:ICBA devices being characterised by higher values of Voc, they display the lowest power conversion efficiency (PCE) due to their lower Jsc and FF values. We find that although all blend films have similar morphologies, X-ray scattering indicates a reduced degree of order within the fullerene domains in the ICBA-based film. Due to the high LUMO level of ICBA, the corresponding blends are characterised by a lower initial exciton dissociation and this associated with the reduced ordering within the ICBA domains results in increased geminate recombination of the photogenerated electrons in the fullerene-rich domains and a consequently reduced PCE of the corresponding devices. Porous polystyrene microspheres were produced by a process of nonsolvent induced phase separation (NIPS) from ternary polymer-solvent-nonsolvent (polystyrene-toluene-ethanol) systems and characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) techniques. This study provides evidence for a link between the structural morphology of the porous polystyrene particles and the polystyrene concentration in the initial solutions. A reciprocal relationship between pore diameter and polymer concentration was observed for the systems with the polymer amount below the critical chain overlap concentration, C*. Above C*, this relationship breaks down. The reciprocal relationship between porosity and polymer concentration can be used to facilitate the fine control of the void size. We demonstrate that the observed reciprocal relationship between pore diameter and polymer concentration correlates well with the relative amount of nonsolvent present in the system at the onset of the phase separation process. The pore size can be reduced and, consequently, the pore surface area can be increased either by reducing the polymer concentration in the initial solution or by decreasing the polymer molecular weight in the sample composition.

It is shown that by chemically doping the carbazole-based conjugated polymer PCDTBT using the molecular materials TBP, LiTFSI and FK209, its conductivity can be increased by a factor of 105 times. Such doped PCDTBT films are used as a hole transport material (HTM) for standard architecture (CH(NH2)2PbI3)0.85(CH3NH3PbBr3)0.15 perovskite solar cells (PSCs). We show that devices with optimised PCDTBT thickness and doping level achieve a peak power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 15.9%. We expect a number of related doped conjugated polymers to also be capable of acting as efficient HTMs for PSCs.

We studied crystallinity and exciton harvesting in bulk heterojunctions of a semiconducting polymer PffBT4T-2OD and electron acceptor PC71BM which are used to make highly efficient organic solar cells. Grazing incidence wide-angle X-ray scattering (GIWAXS) shows that the size of crystalline domains of PffBT4T-2OD increases to ~18 nm in photovoltaic blends upon thermal annealing at 100 °C for 5 minutes. These domains are larger than the typical exciton diffusion lengths in conjugated polymers. Time-resolved fluorescence measurements show that exciton diffusion length in PffBT4T-2OD increases from ~14 to ~24 nm upon thermal annealing, which enables efficient charge generation in blends with large domains. Solar cells prepared using thermally annealed blends show higher photocurrent, open circuit voltage and fill factor compared to as spin-coated blends which indicates reduced recombination losses. Our results demonstrate the advantages of large crystalline domains in organic photovoltaics, providing exciton diffusion is sufficient. Postprint

Engulfment of extracellular material by phagocytosis or macropinocytosis depends on the ability of cells to generate specialised cup shaped protrusions. To effectively capture and internalise their targets, these cups are organised into a ring or ruffle of actin-driven protrusion encircling a non-protrusive interior domain. These functional domains depend on the combined activities of multiple Ras and Rho family small GTPases, but how their activities are integrated and differentially regulated over space and time is unknown. Here, we show that the amoeba Dictyostelium discoideum coordinates Ras and Rac activity using the multidomain protein RGBARG (RCC1, RhoGEF, BAR and RasGAP-containing protein). We find RGBARG uses a tripartite mechanism of Ras, Rac and phospholipid interactions to localise at the protruding edge and interface with the interior of both macropinocytic and phagocytic cups. There, RGBARG shapes the protrusion by driving Rac activation at the rim whilst suppressing expansion of the active Ras interior domain. Consequently, cells lacking RGBARG form enlarged, flat interior domains unable to generate large macropinosomes. During phagocytosis, we find that disruption of RGBARG causes a geometry-specific defect in engulfing rod-shaped bacteria and ellipsoidal beads. This demonstrates the importance of co-ordinating small GTPase activities during engulfment of more complex shapes and thus the full physiological range of microbes, and how this is achieved in a model professional phagocyte.

Doping poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrene sulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) is known to improve its conductivity; however, little is known about the thin-film structure of PEDOT:PSS when doped with an asymmetrically charged dopant. In this study, PEDOT:PSS was doped with different concentrations of the zwitterion 3-( N, N dimethylmyristylammonio)propanesulfonate (DYMAP), and its effect on the bulk structure of the films was characterized by neutron reflectivity. The results show that at a low doping concentration, the film separates into a quasi-bilayer structure with lower roughness (10%), increased thickness (18%), and lower electrical conductivity compared to the undoped sample. However, when the doping concentration increases, the film forms into a homogeneous layer and experiences an enhanced conductivity by more than an order of magnitude, a 20% smoother surface, and a 60% thickness increase relative to the pristine sample. Atomic force microscopy (AFM) and profilometry measurements confirmed these findings, and the AFM height and phase images showed the gradually increasing presence of DYMAP on the film surface as a function of the concentration. Neutron reflectivity also showed that the quasi-bilayer structure of the lowest concentration-doped PEDOT:PSS is separated by a graded rather than a well-defined interface. Our findings provide an understanding of the layer structure modification for doped PEDOT:PSS films which should prove important for device applications.

Bright, highly reflective iridescent colours can be seen across nature and are produced by the scattering of light from nanostructures. Heliconius butterflies have been widely studied for their diversity and mimicry of wing colour patterns. Despite iridescence evolving multiple times in this genus, little is known about the genetic basis of the colour and the development of the structures which produce it. Heliconius erato can be found across Central and South America, but only races found in western Ecuador and Colombia have developed blue iridescent colour. Here, we use crosses between iridescent and non-iridescent races of H. erato to study phenotypic variation in the resulting F 2 generation. Using measurements of blue colour from photographs, we find that iridescent structural colour is a quantitative trait controlled by multiple genes, with strong evidence for loci on the Z sex chromosome. Iridescence is not linked to the Mendelian colour pattern locus that also segregates in these crosses (controlled by the gene cortex ). Small-angle X-ray scattering data show that spacing between longitudinal ridges on the scales, which affects the intensity of the blue reflectance, also varies quantitatively in F 2 crosses.

International audience; Stober silica particles are used in a diverse range of applications. Despite their widespread industrial and scientific uses, information on the internal structure of the particles is non-trivial to obtain and is not often reported. In this work we have used spin-echo small angle neutron scattering (SESANS) in conjunction with ultra small angle X-ray scattering (USAXS) and pycnometry to study an aqueous dispersion of Stober particles. Our results are in agreement with models which propose that Stober particles have a porous core, with a significant fraction of the pores inaccessible to solvent. For samples prepared from the same master sample in a range of H2O: D2O ratio solutions we were able to model the SESANS results for the solution series assuming monodisperse, smooth surfaced spheres of radius 83 nm with an internal open pore volume fraction of 32% and a closed pore fraction of 10%. Our results are consistent with USAXS measurements. The protocol developed and discussed here shows that the SESANS technique is a powerful way to investigate particles much larger than those studied using conventional small angle scattering methods

When the neutron scattering technique, Spin Echo Resolved Grazing Incidence Scattering (SERGIS) concept, was originally put forward by Rekveldt [Physica B 1135, 234-236 (1997)] and Felcher et al. [Proc. SPIE 4785, 164 (2002)], they recognized that the specular scattering and the off-specular scattering could be spatially separated due to the tight neutron beam collimation in the scattering plane, a necessity for any reflectometry experiment. In this Letter, we show that it is possible to make large area measurements of periodic grating structures using SERGIS in a number of interesting scenarios. The SERGIS data can be analyzed using a dynamical theory, which makes it possible to effectively retrieve the lateral profile of a commercial periodic diffraction grating. Interestingly, this is still the case even when that grating is buried beneath a highly deuterated poly(methyl methacrylate-D8) polymer layer. We also clearly demonstrate that the maximum sensitivity to lateral structures is achieved when the specular reflection from the grating is excluded from the data analysis, demonstrating a feature of SERGIS that was proposed over two decades ago. The impact of the additive 1,8-diiodooctane on the morphology of bulk-heterojunction solar cells based on the systems P3HT:PC71BM, PTB7:PC71BM and PTB7-Th:PC71BM is studied using a combination of Small Angle Neutron Scattering (SANS) and Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM). The results clearly show that while in the P3HT:PC71BM system, the additive DIO promotes a slight coarsening of the phase domains (type I additive), in the systems PTB7:PC71BM and PTB7-Th:PC71BM, DIO promotes a large decrease in the size of the phase domains (type II additive). SANS is demonstrated as being particularly useful at detecting the minor morphological changes observed in the P3HT:PC71BM system, which can be hardly seen in AFM. This work illustrates how SANS complements AFM and both techniques when used together provide a deeper insight into the nanoscale structure in thin organic photovoltaic (OPV) device films.

Non-fullerene acceptors (NFAs) have recently outperformed their fullerene counterparts in binary bulk-heterojunction (BHJ) organic solar cells (OSCs). Further development of NFA OSCs may benefit other novel OSC device structures that alter or extend the standard BHJ concept. Here, we report such a new processing route that forms a BHJ-like morphology between sequentially processed polymer donor and NFA with high power conversion efficiencies in excess of 10%. Both devices show similar charge generation and recombination behaviours, supporting formation of similar BHJ active layers. We correlate the approximate to 30 meV smaller open-circuit voltage in sq-BHJ devices to more substantial non-radiative recombination by voltage loss analysis. We also determine the exciton diffusion length of benchmark polymer PBDB-T to be 10 +/- 3 nm. Our results demonstrate high-efficiency OSC devices using sequential deposition method and provide new opportunities to further improve performance of state-of-the-art OSCs. The diversity and vividness of structural colour in the natural world have been recognised as far back as William Hooke in the 17th century. Whilst it is only recently that advances in the field have revealed the elegance and finesse of the physics used to create these effects. In this topical review we will highlight some of the structures and effects responsible for colour in butterfly scales, bird feathers, plants, insects and beetle elytra that have been studied to date. We will discuss the structures responsible and look at similarities and differences in these structures between species. This will be alongside our current understanding of how these are created biologically, how they develop structurally and what control mechanisms nature has at its disposal to control structure formation.

The crystallization of poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT) to form nanowires has attracted considerable interest because this process significantly increases the hole mobility when compared to amorphous P3HT, leading to improved performance in photovoltaic and other organic electronic devices. However, full characterization of the crystallization self-assembly of the polymer chains in solution has not been achieved yet, due to limited use of i n − s i t u not destructive techniques. Here, we investigate the ageing-driven formation and evolution of regioregular (rr) P3HT nanostructures in chlorobenzene solution using small angle neutron scattering (SANS) and UV–Vis spectroscopy. We have monitored how the shape of the rr-P3HT aggregates evolves. The initial states for rr-P3HT chains are the random coils, which straighten to form rods. These subsequently π - π stack to form 2D lamellae, which further stack to create nanowires. The formation of nanowires is promoted both by the length of ageing and by low temperatures ( 4 ∘ C ). Temperatures above > 40 ∘ C reverse the formation of nanowires. Additionally, atomic force microscopy (AFM) and grazing incidence wide angle x-ray scattering (GIWAXS) reveal that the nanowires can be successfully aligned during deposition by off-axis spin coating. Finally, the anisotropic conductivity of the aligned rr-P3HT nanowire films is reported. This is significant for applications such as gas sensing or organic thin film transistors, where increased conductivity and controlled nanostructure are desirable.
