Measurements of atmospheric turbulence at a site in Ferryland (Newfoundland) during the C-FOG (Coastal-Fog) field campaign in September–October 2018 are used to study meteorological parameters, turbulence statistics, internal boundary layers, and scaling laws for turbulent mixing in the coastal zone. We observe stable/unstable shallow internal boundary layers with a region of unstable/stable stratification above with onshore flow from a relatively warm/cold sea onto the cold/heated land during the night/day. This study compares surface fluxes and other turbulence statistics as well as different scaling laws with and without fog. While both complexity of the coastal landforms and foggy conditions nominally violate assumptions underlying Monin–Obukhov similarity theory (MOST), our observations show that the non-dimensional standard deviations of the velocity components and the dissipation rate of turbulence kinetic energy obey MOST reasonably well for all measurement levels, stability conditions, and wind directions for both fog and no fog cases. However, the data scatter for the normalized dissipation rate is somewhat greater compared with the normalized standard deviations of the wind components. The bias and relatively larger scatter of normalized standard deviations for scalars in near-neutral conditions is likely associated with the underlying inhomogeneous coastal surface. According to the C-FOG data, during a fog event the moisture flux data become irregular and the latent heat flux is often negative (downward). Our observations also demonstrate poor agreement between normalized standard deviations of specific humidity with MOST for foggy conditions; its statistical dependence on the MOST stability parameter is weak at best in fog.

An interesting mixing-fog event was identified during the C-FOG field campaign, where a cold-frontal airmass arriving from the north-east collided with The Downs peninsula in Ferryland, Newfoundland, Canada, to produce misty/foggy conditions. A comprehensive set of field observations suggests that this collision caused turbulent mixing of nearly saturated ambient air with an almost saturated cold-frontal airmass, creating conditions for mixing fog. To delve into the physical processes underlying this phenomenon, laboratory experiments were performed on the interaction of lock-exchange-induced gravity currents with a rectangular obstacle. Instantaneous velocity and density fields were obtained using particle image velocimetry and planar laser-induced fluorescence. The observations suggest that the obstacle starts affecting the approaching gravity-current propagation at an upstream distance of 2H and, upon collision, the mixing occurs over a length of 0.83H, where H is the depth of the ambient fluid layer. The time for larger-scale turbulent stirring to permeate to the smallest scales of turbulence and activate the condensation nuclei is estimated as $$3t^*$$ , where $$t^*=\sqrt{H/g'}$$ is the intrinsic time scale of the gravity current, and $$g'$$ is the reduced gravity. Extrapolation of laboratory results to field conditions shows a good agreement with observations.

C-FOG is a comprehensive bi-national project dealing with the formation, persistence, and dissipation (life cycle) of fog in coastal areas (coastal fog) controlled by land, marine, and atmospheric processes. Given its inherent complexity, coastal-fog literature has mainly focused on case studies, and there is a continuing need for research that integrates across processes (e.g., air–sea–land interactions, environmental flow, aerosol transport, and chemistry), dynamics (two-phase flow and turbulence), microphysics (nucleation, droplet characterization), and thermodynamics (heat transfer and phase changes) through field observations and modeling. Central to C-FOG was a field campaign in eastern Canada from 1 September to 8 October 2018, covering four land sites in Newfoundland and Nova Scotia and an adjacent coastal strip transected by the Research Vessel Hugh R. Sharp. An array of in situ, path-integrating, and remote sensing instruments gathered data across a swath of space–time scales relevant to fog life cycle. Satellite and reanalysis products, routine meteorological observations, numerical weather prediction model (WRF and COAMPS) outputs, large-eddy simulations, and phenomenological modeling underpin the interpretation of field observations in a multiscale and multiplatform framework that helps identify and remedy numerical model deficiencies. An overview of the C-FOG field campaign and some preliminary analysis/findings are presented in this paper.

Climate models still have deficits in reproducing the surface energy and momentum budgets in Arctic regions. One of the reasons is that currently used transfer coefficients occurring in parameterizations of the turbulent fluxes are based on stability functions derived from measurements over land and not over sea ice. An improved parameterization is developed using the Monin–Obukhov similarity theory (MOST) and corresponding stability functions that reproduce measurements over sea ice obtained during the Surface Heat Budget of the Arctic Ocean (SHEBA) campaign. The new stability functions for the stable surface layer represent a modification of earlier ones also based on SHEBA measurements. It is shown that the new functions are superior to the former ones with respect to the representation of the measured relationship between the MOST stability parameter and the bulk Richardson number. Nevertheless, the functions fulfill the same criteria of applicability as the earlier functions and contain, as an extension, a dependence on the neutral-limit turbulent Prandtl number. Applying the new functions we develop an efficient noniterative parameterization of the near-surface turbulent fluxes of momentum and heat with transfer coefficients as a function of the bulk Richardson number (Rib) and roughness parameters. A hierarchy of transfer coefficients is recommended for weather and climate models. They agree better with SHEBA data for strong stability (Rib > 0.1) than previous parameterizations and they agree well with those based on the Businger–Dyer functions in the range Rib ≤ 0.1.

The effect of electrical field control of the spin-wave spectrum in adjacent magnonic crystals stripes was investigated by micromagnetic simulation, microwave spectroscopy, and Brillouin light scattering (BLS). The electric-field-induced dipolar coupling between magnetic stripes leads to the formation of symmetric and antisymmetric collective modes in the spectra of propagating spin waves. In particular, the strain-induced variation of the spin-wave coupling length in the stripe, predicted by micromagnetic simulation and measured by BLS, show the possibility of application of a lateral array of magnonic crystals as tunable microwave directional couplers, power dividers, and spin-wave demultiplexers, which can be used simultaneously as an interconnection unit in reconfigurable magnonic networks.

The solvent-free synthesis of allyl-substituted chitosan derivatives through reactive co-extrusion of chitosan powder with allyl bromide at shear deformation was performed. For the structural characterization, FTIR and NMR methods were employed. The results were confirmed by chemical analysis. The total content of allyl substituents from 5 to 50 per 100 chitosan units as a function of the component ratio in the reactive mixtures was revealed. Carrying out the reaction without any additives leads to the selective formation of N-alkylated derivatives, whereas in the presence of alkali the ethers of chitosan were preferentially formed. The results suggest that the proposed approach allows significantly higher yield of products to be obtained at high process speeds and significantly lower reagent consumption as compared with the liquid-phase synthesis in organic medium. The synthesized unsaturated derivatives are promising photosensitive components for use in laser stereolithography for fabrication of three-dimensional biocompatible structures with well-defined architectonics.

We report here on dipolar coupling of spin waves propagating as guided modes of adjacent yttrium iron garnet stripes. Three stripes are placed parallel to each other and separated by gaps that are small enough to provide nearest-neighbor coupling. The origin of the coupling is the dipole field of the precessing magnetization vector. The micromagnetic numerical simulation, yielded spectra of spin waves through the magnonic structure. Analysis of those spectra revealed that the lateral structure can be used as a functional unit in planar magnonic networks – they can be utilized as a directional coupler, spin-wave multiplexer, or microwave power divider. Using Brillouin light scattering spectroscopy, we experimentally demonstrated spin-wave transport along the lateral stripes. We were able to control the spin-wave routing between the stripes by varying the bias angle of the magnetic field.

Results of weather forecast, present-day climate simulations and future climate projections depend among other factors on the interaction between the atmosphere and the underlying sea-ice, the land and the ocean. In numerical weather prediction and climate models some of these interactions are accounted for by transport coefficients describing turbulent exchange of momentum, heat and moisture. Currently used transfer coefficients have, however, large uncertainties in flow regimes being typical for cold nights and seasons, but especially in the polar regions. Furthermore, their determination is numerically complex. It is obvious that progress could be achieved when the transfer coefficients would be given by simple mathematical formulae in frames of an economic computational scheme. Such a new universal, so-called non-iterative parametrization scheme is derived for a package of transfer coefficients.The derivation is based on the Monin-Obukhov similarity theory, which is over the years well accepted in the scientific community. The newly derived non-iterative scheme provides a basis for a cheap systematic study of the impact of near-surface turbulence and of the related transports of momentum, heat and moisture in NWP and climate models. We show that often used transfer coefficients like those of Louis et al. (1982) or of Cheng and Brutsaert (2005) can be applied at large stability only with some caution, keeping in mind that at large stability they significantly overestimate the transfer coefficient compared with most comprehensive measurements. The paper presents the author’s concept of increasing employment in rural areas by expanding the practice of efficient use of labor resources. When analyzing this problem and proposing a research hypothesis, the authors used such methods as synthesis, induction, assumptions, and a sociological survey. The study resulted in recommendations for increasing indirect employment in the studied region.

The article is devoted to technologies and virtual reality systems as comprehensive solutions for immersion of the user into virtual reality using specialized devices and interfaces. Technologies for wire/wireless transfer of audio-visual and parametric information in virtual reality systems are discussed. The aim of the article is to analyze and summarize advantages and disadvantages of modern facilities for multimedia and parametric information transfer used in virtual reality systems. A search method for research materials in Russian and international journals included in scientific citation databases was used. The paper analyzes the features (advantages and disadvantages) of using virtual reality in conditions of optical information transfer, wireless protocols (WiFi, Bluetooth, Wireless USB, LIDAR, ZigBee), and wire interfaces (Display Port, HDMI, USB) that provide user communication with virtual reality system. Virtual reality forms a new artificial real world transferred to the user via various wire/wireless (WiGig (802.11ad), WiFi 6 (802.11ax), WiHD (802.15.3c), and Display Port 2.0) interfaces, taking into account physiological, physical and psychometric indicators. Modern technical solutions should give impetus to the creation of adaptive virtual reality with a total immersion effect, when the user cannot distinguish a virtual world from real events.

The calculation of the near-surface turbulent fluxes of energy and momentum in climate and weather prediction models requires transfer coefficients. Currently used parametrizations of these coefficients are based on stability functions derived from measurements over land and not over sea ice. However, recently, a non-iterative parametrization has been proposed by Gryanik and Lüpkes (2018), which can be applied to climate and weather prediction models as well but uses stability functions of Grachev et al. (2007). These functions had been obtained from measurements during the Surface Heat Budget over the Arctic Ocean campaign (SHEBA) and thus from measurements over sea ice. A drawback of the scheme of Gryanik and Lüpkes (2018) is that there is still some complexity due to the complexity of the SHEBA based functions.Thus new stability functions are proposed for the stable boundary layer, which are also based on the SHEBA measurements but avoid the complexity. It is shown that the new functions are superior to the former ones with respect to the representation of the measured relationship between the Obukhov length and the bulk Richardson number. Moreover, the resulting transfer coefficients agree slightly better with the SHEBA observations in the very stable range. Nevertheless, the functions fulfill the same criteria of applicability as the earlier functions and contain furthermore as an extension a dependence on the neutral Prandtl number. Inductive sensors can be used in devices for measuring the composition of liquid media, the moisture content of bulk and solid materials, while they provide several advantages over the more common conductometric sensors, for example, they allow more accurate measurements of moving materials or ampoules of aggressive and toxic environments. Inductive sensors are less widely used due to the complexity of the design and the appearance of resonant effects in combination with the capacity of inductive sensors. The article discusses: equivalent circuits of inductive sensors represented by a multi-element equivalent circuit; options for constructing unifying single and multichannel converters of electrophysical properties parameters of substances based on an inductive sensor, their construction features, drawbacks, errors, the choice of an informative parameter, ways to increase the invariance of measurements. To process the obtained analog results from the outputs of the unifying converters, it is proposed to use digital post-processing in the microcontroller. This construction simplifies the scheme and allows you to create stand-alone mobile devices without the use of processing measurement results on a personal computer and without the use of specialized expensive software. The advantages of such a construction are its wide functionality and correction of additional errors.

Surface turbulent fluxes provide a key boundary condition for the prediction of weather, hydrology, and atmospheric carbon dioxide. The turbulence cospectrum is assumed to typically follow a −7/3 power-law scaling, which is used for the high-frequency spectral correction of eddy-covariance data. The derivation of this scaling is mostly grounded on dimensional analysis. The dimensional analysis or cospectral budget analyses, however, can lead to alternative cospectral scaling. Here we examine the shape of turbulence cospectra at high Reynolds number and high wavenumbers based on extensive field measurements of wind velocity and temperature in various stably stratified atmospheric conditions. We show that the cospectral scaling deviates from the −7/3 scaling at high wavenumbers in the inertial subrange of the stable atmospheric boundary layer, and appears to follow a −2 power-law scaling. We suggest that −2 power-law scaling is a better alternative for cospectral corrections for eddy-covariance measurements of the stable boundary layer.

Measurements of the surface energy fluxes (turbulent and radiative) and other ancillary atmospheric/soil parameters made in the Columbia River Basin (Oregon) in an area of complex terrain during a 10-month long portion of the second Wind Forecast Improvement Project (WFIP 2) field campaign are used to study the surface energy budget (SEB) and surface fluxes over different temporal scales. This study analyzes and discusses SEB closure based on half-hourly, daily, monthly, seasonal, and sub-annual (~10-month) temporal averages. The data were collected over all four seasons for different states of the underlying ground surface (dry, wet, and frozen). Our half-hourly direct measurements of energy balance show that the sum of the turbulent sensible and latent heat fluxes systematically underestimate positive net radiation by around 20–30% during daytime and overestimate negative net radiation at night. This imbalance of the surface energy budget is comparable to other terrestrial sites. However, on average, the residual energy imbalance is significantly reduced at daily, weekly, and monthly averaging timescales, and moreover, the SEB can be closed for this site within reasonable limits on seasonal and sub-annual timescales (311-day averaging for the entire field campaign dataset). Increasing the averaging time to daily and longer time intervals substantially reduces the ground heat flux and storage terms, because energy locally entering the soil, air column, and vegetation in the morning is released in the afternoon and evening. Averaging on daily to sub-annual timescales also reduces random instrumental measurement errors and other uncertainties as well as smooths out a hysteresis effect (phase lag) in the SEB relationship between different components. This study shows that SEB closure is better for dry soils compared to wet soils and the statistical dependence of the turbulent fluxes and net radiation for freezing soil surfaces appears weak, if not non-existent, apparently due to lack of the latent heat of fusion term in the traditional SEB equation.

Flow in the stable boundary layer is examined at four contrasting sites with greater upwind surface roughness. The surface heterogeneity is disorganized and in some cases weak as commonly occurs. With low wind speeds, the vertical divergence (or convergence) of the momentum and heat fluxes can be large near the surface in what is normally assumed to be the surface layer where such divergence is neglected. For the two most heterogeneous sites, a shallow “new” boundary layer is captured by the tower observations, analogous to an internal boundary layer but more complex. Above the new boundary layer, the magnitudes of the downward fluxes of heat and momentum increase with height in a transition layer, reach a maximum, and then decrease with height in an overlying regional boundary layer. Similar structure is observed at the site with rolling terrain where the shallow new boundary layer at the surface is identified as cold-air drainage generated by the local slope above which the flow undergoes transition to an overlying regional flow. Significant flux divergence near the surface is generated even over an ice floe for low wind speeds and in a shallow Ekman layer that forms during the polar night. For higher wind speeds, the magnitude of the downward fluxes decreases gradually with height at all levels as in a traditional boundary layer.

This observational study compares seasonal variations of surface fluxes (turbulent, radiative, and soil heat) and other ancillary atmospheric/surface/permafrost data based on in-situ measurements made at terrestrial research observatories located near the coast of the Arctic Ocean. Hourly-averaged multiyear data sets collected at Eureka (Nunavut, Canada) and Tiksi (East Siberia, Russia) are analyzed in more detail to elucidate similarities and differences in the seasonal cycles at these two Arctic stations, which are situated at significantly different latitudes (80.0°N and 71.6°N, respectively). While significant gross similarities exist in the annual cycles of various meteorological parameters and fluxes, the differences in latitude, local topography, cloud cover, snowfall, and soil characteristics produce noticeable differences in fluxes and in the structures of the atmospheric boundary layer and upper soil temperature profiles. An important factor is that even though higher latitude sites (in this case Eureka) generally receive less annual incoming solar radiation but more total daily incoming solar radiation throughout the summer months than lower latitude sites (in this case Tiksi). This leads to a counter-intuitive state where the average active layer (or thaw line) is deeper and the topsoil temperature in midsummer are higher in Eureka which is located almost 10° north of Tiksi. The study further highlights the differences in the seasonal and latitudinal variations of the incoming shortwave and net radiation as well as the moderating cloudiness effects that lead to temporal and spatial differences in the structure of the atmospheric boundary layer and the uppermost ground layer. Specifically the warm season (Arctic summer) is shorter and mid-summer amplitude of the surface fluxes near solar noon is generally less in Eureka than in Tiksi. During the dark Polar night and cold seasons (Arctic winter) when the ground is covered with snow and air temperatures are sufficiently below freezing, the near-surface environment is generally stably stratified and the hourly averaged turbulent fluxes are quite small and irregular with on average small downward sensible heat fluxes and upward latent heat and carbon dioxide fluxes. The magnitude of the turbulent fluxes increases rapidly when surface snow disappears and the air temperatures rise above freezing during spring melt and eventually reaches a summer maximum. Throughout the summer months strong upward sensible and latent heat fluxes and downward carbon dioxide (uptake by the surface) are typically observed indicating persistent unstable (convective) stratification. Due to the combined effects of day length and solar zenith angle, the convective boundary layer forms in the High Arctic (e.g., in Eureka) and can reach long-lived quasi-stationary states in summer. During late summer and early autumn all turbulent fluxes rapidly decrease in magnitude when the air temperature decreases and falls below freezing. Unlike Eureka, a pronounced zero-curtain effect consisting of a sustained surface temperature hiatus at the freezing point is observed in Tiksi during fall due to wetter and/or water saturated soils.

We report on the study of the spin wave (SW) propagation in the magnonic waveguide which consists of an irregular magnetic thin film and a piezoelectric layer. We demonstrate that the use of a finite-width piezoelectric layer on the top of a magnetic waveguide leads to controllable SW splitting. By means of numerical simulation, we demonstrate the functionality of the proposed structure. We show that the switching of SW power is possible due to electric field variation and thus the proposed structure can act as a frequency-selective multichannel SW splitter and multiplexer.

The article presents a device for measuring the moisture content of leguminous crops based on a contact conduct-dielcometric sensor, represented by a multi-element equivalent circuit. It is proposed to introduce into the device, implemented on the microcontroller, a processing unit for an analog signal obtained from the output of the measuring circuit, carrying information on the values of the equivalent circuit parameters of the contact conduct-dielcometric sensor. Such a construction simplifies the circuit and allows creating stand-alone mobile moisture meters without using the processing of measurement results on a personal computer and without using specialized expensive software. A functional diagram of such a measuring device and experimental dependences of the parameters of the sensor equivalent circuit on the grain moisture are presented. The transformation equations for each parameter and moisture calculation, as well as the values of the errors obtained as a result of processing the experimental data are given. The advantages of the device are wide functionality and correction of additional errors.

The high-energy potential of wastewater sewage sludge (SS) produced in large amounts around the world makes it an attractive feedstock for fuels and energy sectors. Thermochemical valorization relying on pyrolysis of SS followed by hydrotreatment of pyrolysis oil (Py-SS) might even allow the integration of SS into existing oil refineries. In the present study, catalytic hydrotreatment of Py-SS was performed over a NiCuMo-P-SiO2 catalyst in a batch reactor at temperatures in the range of 200&ndash, 390 &deg, C. Due to sulfur presence in the feed, the increasing reaction temperature induced in situ transformation of metallic Ni into Ni3S2 in the catalyst. In contrast, the Ni3P active phase possessed remarkable stability even at the harshest reaction conditions. The oxygen content in the reaction products was decreased by 59%, while up to 52% of N and 89% of S were removed at 390 &deg, C. The content of free fatty acids was greatly reduced by their conversion to n-alkanes, while the larger amount of volatile aromatics was generated from high molecular mass compounds. The quality of oil-derived products greatly changed at elevated temperatures, providing strong evidence of effective upgrading via decarboxy(ny)lation, hydrogenation, and hydrocracking transformations.

Atmospheric turbulence measurements made at the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Field Research Facility (FRF) located on the Atlantic coast near the town of Duck, North Carolina during the CASPER-East Program (October–November 2015) are used to study air–sea/land coupling in the FRF coastal zone. Turbulence and mean meteorological data were collected at multiple levels (up to four) on three towers deployed at different landward distances from the shoreline, with a fourth tower located at the end of a 560-m-long FRF pier. The data enable comparison of turbulent fluxes and other statistics, as well as investigations of surface-layer scaling for different footprints, including relatively smooth sea-surface conditions and aerodynamically rough dry inland areas. Both stable and unstable stratifications were observed. The drag coefficient and diurnal variation of the sensible heat flux are found to be indicators for disparate surface footprints. The drag coefficient over the land footprint is significantly greater, by as much as an order of magnitude, compared with that over the smooth sea-surface footprint. For onshore flow, the internal boundary layer in the coastal zone was either stable or (mostly) unstable, and varied dramatically at the land-surface discontinuity. The offshore flow of generally warm air over the cooler sea surface produced a stable internal boundary layer over the ocean surface downstream from the coast. While the coastal inhomogeneities violate the assumptions underlying Monin–Obukhov similarity theory (MOST), any deviations from MOST are less profound for the scaled standard deviations and the dissipation rate over both water and land, as well as for stable and unstable conditions. Observations, however, show a poor correspondence with MOST for the flux-profile relationships. Suitably-averaged, non-dimensional profiles of wind speed and temperature vary significantly among the different flux towers and observation levels, with high data scatter. Overall, the statistical dependence of the vertical gradients of scaled wind speed and temperature on the Monin–Obukhov stability parameter in the coastal area is weak, if not non-existent.

Science education can build a bridge between research carried out by scientists and relevant learning opportunities for students. The Broader Impact requirements for scientists by funding agencies facilitate this connection. We propose and test a model curriculum development process in which scientists, curriculum developers, and classroom educators work together to scaffold the use of authentic, unprocessed scientific data for high school students. We outline a three-module curriculum structure that facilitates these goals. This curriculum engages students in the collection, description, visualization, and interpretation of data; develops understanding of the nature of science; includes prompts to develop higher-order thinking skills; builds knowledge of regional relevance of climate change in students; uses active learning techniques; and can be easily integrated with the Next Generation Science Standards. We observe and explain theoretically strain-induced spin-wave routing in the bilateral composite multilayer. By means of Brillouin light scattering and microwave spectroscopy, we study the spin-wave transport across three adjacent magnonic stripes, which are strain coupled to a piezoelectric layer. The strain may effectively induce voltage-controlled dipolar spin-wave interactions. We experimentally demonstrate the basic features of the voltage-controlled spin-wave switching. We show that the spin-wave characteristics can be tuned with an electrical field due to piezoelectricity and magnetostriction of the piezolayer and layered composite and mechanical coupling between them. Our experimental observations agree with numerical calculations.

Chitosan-g-oligolactide copolymers with relatively long oligolactide grafted chains of various stereochemical compositions have been synthetized via a solvent-free mechanochemical technique and tailored to fabricate three-dimensional hydrogels using two-photon induced microstereolithography. An effect of the characteristics of chitosan and oligolactide used for the synthesis on the grafting yield and copolymer’s behavior were evaluated using fractional analysis, FTIR-spectroscopy, dynamic light scattering, and UV-spectrophotometry. The lowest copolymer yield was found for the system based on chitosan with higher molecular weight, while the samples consisting of low-molecular weight chitosan showed higher grafting degrees, which were comparable in both the cases of l,l- or l,d-oligolactide grafting. The copolymer processability in the course of two-photon stereolithography was evaluated as a function of the copolymer’s characteristics and stereolithography conditions. The structure and mechanical properties of the model film samples and fabricated 3D hydrogels were studied using optical and scanning electron microscopy, as well as by using tensile and nanoindenter devices. The application of copolymer with oligo(l,d-lactide) side chains led to higher processability during two-photon stereolithography in terms of the response to the laser beam, reproduction of the digital model, and the mechanical properties of the fabricated hydrogels.

The Coupled Air–Sea Processes and Electromagnetic Ducting Research (CASPER) project aims to better quantify atmospheric effects on the propagation of radar and communication signals in the marine environment. Such effects are associated with vertical gradients of temperature and water vapor in the marine atmospheric surface layer (MASL) and in the capping inversion of the marine atmospheric boundary layer (MABL), as well as the horizontal variations of these vertical gradients. CASPER field measurements emphasized simultaneous characterization of electromagnetic (EM) wave propagation, the propagation environment, and the physical processes that gave rise to the measured refractivity conditions. CASPER modeling efforts utilized state-of-the-art large-eddy simulations (LESs) with a dynamically coupled MASL and phase-resolved ocean surface waves. CASPER-East was the first of two planned field campaigns, conducted in October and November 2015 offshore of Duck, North Carolina. This article highlights the scientific motivations and objectives of CASPER and provides an overview of the CASPER-East field campaign. The CASPER-East sampling strategy enabled us to obtain EM wave propagation loss as well as concurrent environmental refractive conditions along the propagation path. This article highlights the initial results from this sampling strategy showing the range-dependent propagation loss, the atmospheric and upper-oceanic variability along the propagation range, and the MASL thermodynamic profiles measured during CASPER-East.

Local similarity theory is suggested based on the Brunt-Vaisala frequency and the dissipation rate of turbulent kinetic energy instead the turbulent fluxes used in the traditional Monin-Obukhov similarity theory. Based on dimensional analysis (Pi theorem), it is shown that any properly scaled statistics of the small-scale turbulence are universal functions of a stability parameter defined as the ratio of a reference height z and the Dougherty-Ozmidov length scale which in the limit of z-less stratification is linearly proportional to the Obukhov length scale. Measurements of atmospheric turbulence made at five levels on a 20-m tower over the Arctic pack ice during the Surface Heat Budget of the Arctic Ocean experiment (SHEBA) are used to examine the behaviour of different similarity functions in the stable boundary layer. It is found that in the framework of this approach the non-dimensional turbulent viscosity is equal to the gradient Richardson number whereas the non-dimensional turbulent thermal diffusivity is equal to the flux Richardson number. These results are a consequence of the approximate local balance between production of turbulence by the mean flow shear and viscous dissipation. The turbulence framework based on the Brunt-Vaisala frequency and the dissipation rate of turbulent kinetic energy may have practical advantages for estimating turbulence when the fluxes are not directly available.

International Arctic Systems for Observing the Atmosphere (IASOA) activities and partnerships were initiated as a part of the 2007–09 International Polar Year (IPY) and are expected to continue for many decades as a legacy program. The IASOA focus is on coordinating intensive measurements of the Arctic atmosphere collected in the United States, Canada, Russia, Norway, Finland, and Greenland to create synthesis science that leads to an understanding of why and not just how the Arctic atmosphere is evolving. The IASOA premise is that there are limitations with Arctic modeling and satellite observations that can only be addressed with boots-on-the-ground, in situ observations and that the potential of combining individual station and network measurements into an integrated observing system is tremendous. The IASOA vision is that by further integrating with other network observing programs focusing on hydrology, glaciology, oceanography, terrestrial, and biological systems it will be possible to understand the mechanisms of the entire Arctic system, perhaps well enough for humans to mitigate undesirable variations and adapt to inevitable change.

Measurements of small-scale turbulence made over the complex-terrain atmospheric boundary layer during the MATERHORN Program are used to describe the structure of turbulence in katabatic flows. Turbulent and mean meteorological data were continuously measured at multiple levels at four towers deployed along the East lower slope (2-4 deg) of Granite Mountain. The multi-level observations made during a 30-day long MATERHORN-Fall field campaign in September-October 2012 allowed studying of temporal and spatial structure of katabatic flows in detail, and herein we report turbulence and their variations in katabatic winds. Observed vertical profiles show steep gradients near the surface, but in the layer above the slope jet the vertical variability is smaller. It is found that the vertical (normal to the slope) momentum flux and horizontal (along the slope) heat flux in a slope-following coordinate system change their sign below and above the wind maximum of a katabatic flow. The vertical momentum flux is directed downward (upward) whereas the horizontal heat flux is downslope (upslope) below (above) the wind maximum. Our study therefore suggests that the position of the jet-speed maximum can be obtained by linear interpolation between positive and negative values of the momentum flux (or the horizontal heat flux) to derive the height where flux becomes zero. It is shown that the standard deviations of all wind speed components (therefore the turbulent kinetic energy) and the dissipation rate of turbulent kinetic energy have a local minimum, whereas the standard deviation of air temperature has an absolute maximum at the height of wind-speed maximum. We report several cases where the vertical and horizontal heat fluxes are compensated. The gradient-based similarity approach removes turbulent fluxes as governing parameters and replaces them with vertical gradients of mean wind speed and potential temperature. As a result, the gradient Richardson number, Ri, appears as a stability parameter instead of the Monin–Obukhov stability parameter z/L (L is the Obukhov length). The gradient-based scaling is more appropriate for moderate and very stable conditions when the gradients are large and their errors are relatively small whereas z/L becomes ambiguous in these conditions because turbulent fluxes are small. However, the gradient-based formulation is faced with a problem related to the influence of Ri outliers: outliers with high values of Ri can exist in conditions that are really near-neutral. These outliers are mapped into the very stable range in plots in which Ri is the independent variable and may lead to spurious dependencies for bin-averaged data (spurious bin-averaging). This effect is quite large for functions that are steep for the gradient-based scaling. The present study uses the Surface Heat Budget of the Arctic Ocean (SHEBA) data to examine the problem and proposes two methods, conditional analysis and independent binning, to limit the influence of outliers on bin-averaging. A disadvantage of the conditional analysis is associated with eliminating outliers based on criteria that could be considered as subjective. The independent bin-averaging method does not have this disadvantage, but the scatter of the bin-averaged points is higher than for the conditional analysis, rendering data analysis and interpretation difficult.

The article of record as published may be located at http://dx.doi.org/10.1002/qj.618 The surface of the Arctic Ocean in summer is a mix of sea ice and water in both leads and melt ponds. Here we use data collected at multiple sites during the year-long experiment to study the SurfaceHeatBudget of the Arctic Ocean (SHEBA)to develop a bulk turbulent flux algorithm for predicting the surface fluxes of momentum and sensible and latent heat over the Arctic Ocean during summer from readily measured or modelled quantities. The distinctive aerodynamic feature of summer sea ice is that the leads andmelt ponds create vertical ice faces that the wind can push against; momentum transfer to the surface is thus enhanced through form drag. In effect, summer sea ice behaves aerodynamically like themarginal ice zone, which is another surface that consists of sea ice and water. In our bulk flux algorithm, we therefore combine our SHEBA measurements of the neutral-stability drag coefficient at a reference height of 10 m, CDN10, with similar measurements from marginal ice zones that have been reported in the literature to create a unified parametrization for CDN10 for summer sea ice and for anymarginal ice zone. This parametrization predicts CDN10 from a second-order polynomial in ice concentration. Our bulk flux algorithm also includes expressions for the roughness lengths for temperature and humidity, introduces new profile stratification corrections for stable stratification, and effectively eliminates the singularities that often occur initerativeflux algorithms for very light winds. In summary, this new algorithm seems capable of estimating the friction velocity u∗ (a surrogate for the momentum flux) over summer sea ice with an absolute accuracy of 0.02–0.03 m s−1; the sensible heat flux, with an accuracy of about 6Wm−2; and the latent heat flux, with an accuracy of 3.5Wm−2. Data collected during the SHEBA and CASES-99 field programs are employed to examine the flux–gradient relationship for wind speed and temperature in the stably stratified boundary layer. The gradient-based and flux-based similarity functions are assessed in terms of the Richardson number Ri and the stability parameter z/Λ*, z being height and Λ* the local Obukhov length. The resulting functions are expressed in an analytical form, which is essentially unaffected by self-correlation, when thermal stratification is strong. Turbulence within the stably stratified boundary layer is classified into four regimes: “nearly-neutral” (0 50). The flux-based similarity functions for gradients are constant in “nearly-neutral” conditions. In the “very-stable” regime, the dimensionless gradients are exponential, and proportional to (z/Λ*)3/5. The existence of scaling laws in “extremely-stable” conditions is doubtful. The Prandtl number Pr decreases from 0.9 in nearly-neutral conditions and to about 0.7 in the very-stable regime. The necessary condition for the presence of steady-state turbulence is Ri < 0.7.

This paper documents the development of nocturnal flows in the wide open Phoenix, Arizona (U.S.A) valley (30 km x 100 km) that is bordered by a large nearly flat plain to the west and high mountains to the north and east. Local thermally driven winds concomitant with the absence of significant synoptic pressure gradients dominate typical winter conditions in the Phoenix valley. The purpose of the Phoenix Air Flow Experiment (PAFEX-1) was to study the development of thermally driven flows during the evening transition in a sloping valley and describe the general pattern of transport and dispersion of contaminants during transition periods and at night. Measurements were made using a tethered balloon, sonic anemometer, balloon-based aerosol sampler, radiation sensors, cup anemometers, thermistors and humidity sensors in conjunction with data collected from 44 standard meteorological stations located throughout the valley. Over the period of 15 days in January and February 1998 the general diurnal flow patterns were repeatable, but varied substantially around the valley. This paper focuses on a case study of the evening transition, nocturnal circulation and morning breakdown of the nocturnal circulation on the night of 31 January and morning of 1 February. Central valley measurements were consistent with the notion that the evening transition is associated with a moving front, followed by intense mixing and the movement of the front to establish down-valley winds. Flows originating from different slopes led to the arrival of fronts at the various measurement locations at different times. These flows intrude into the valley and interact with each other, often causing multi-layered vertical structure. The intrusions respond to the evolving stratification and cause striking variability of these layers, for example, periodic wind and temperature disturbances corresponding to the arrival of new intrusive fronts. The evolution of the boundary layer was found to have a direct bearing on the pollution concentrations in the Phoenix air shed.

This paper focuses on the use of an acoustic sounder, or sodar, during the 2003 Antarctic Tropospheric Chemistry Investigation (ANTCI), to document the behavior of very shallow (

Sonic anemometer turbulence measurements were made at Summit, Greenland during summer 2004 and spring 2005. These measurements allow for the characterization of the variability of the atmospheric boundary layer at this site by describing seasonal and diurnal changes in sensible heat flux and boundary layer stability as well as providing estimates of mixing layer height. Diurnal sensible heat fluxes at Summit ranged from −18 to −2 W m −2 in the spring and from −7 to +10 W m −2 in the summer. Sustained stable surface layer conditions and low wind speeds occured during the spring but not during the summer months. Unstable conditions were not observed at Summit until late April. Diurnal cycles of convective conditions during the daytime (0700–1700 h local time) were observed throughout July and August. Boundary layer heights, which were estimated for neutral to stable conditions, averaged 156 m for the spring 2005 observations. Comparisons of the boundary layer characteristics of Summit with those from South Pole, Antarctica, provide possible explanations for the significant differences in snowpack and surface-layer chemistry between the two sites.

This study focuses on the behaviour of the turbulent Prandtl number, Prt, in the stable atmospheric boundary layer (SBL) based on measurements made during the Surface Heat Budget of the Arctic Ocean experiment (SHEBA). It is found that Prt increases with increasing stability if Prt is plotted vs. gradient Richardson number, Ri; but at the same time, Prt decreases with increasing stability if Prt is plotted vs. flux Richardson number, Rf, or vs. ζ = z/L. This paradoxical behaviour of the turbulent Prandtl number in the SBL derives from the fact that plots of Prt vs. Ri (as well as vs. Rf and ζ) for individual 1-h observations and conventional bin-averaged values of the individual quantities have built-in correlation (or self-correlation) because of the shared variables. For independent estimates of how Prt behaves in very stable stratification, Prt is plotted against the bulk Richardson number; such plots have no built-in correlation. These plots based on the SHEBA data show that, on the average, Prt decreases with increasing stability and Prt < 1 in the very stable case. For specific heights and stabilities, though, the turbulent Prandtl number has more complicated behaviour in the SBL.

Measurements of atmospheric turbulence made during the Surface Heat Budget of the Arctic Ocean Experiment (SHEBA) are used to examine the profile stability functions of momentum, φ m , and sensible heat, φ h , in the stably stratified boundary layer over the Arctic pack ice. Turbulent fluxes and mean meteorological data that cover different surface conditions and a wide range of stability conditions were continuously measured and reported hourly at five levels on a 20-m main tower for 11 months. The comprehensive dataset collected during SHEBA allows studying φ m and φ h in detail and includes ample data for the very stable case. New parameterizations for φ m (ζ) and φ h (ζ) in stable conditions are proposed to describe the SHEBA data; these cover the entire range of the stability parameter ζ = z/L from neutral to very stable conditions, where L is the Obukhov length and z is the measurement height. In the limit of very strong stability, φ m follows a ζ 1/3 dependence, whereas φ h initially increases with increasing ζ, reaches a maximum at ζ ≈ 10, and then tends to level off with increasing ζ. The effects of self-correlation, which occur in plots of φ m and φ h versus ζ, are reduced by using an independent bin-averaging method instead of conventional averaging.

Emerging application areas such as air pollution in megacities, wind energy, urban security, and operation of unmanned aerial vehicles have intensified scientific and societal interest in mountain meteorology. To address scientific needs and help improve the prediction of mountain weather, the U.S. Department of Defense has funded a research effort—the Mountain Terrain Atmospheric Modeling and Observations (MATERHORN) Program—that draws the expertise of a multidisciplinary, multi-institutional, and multinational group of researchers. The program has four principal thrusts, encompassing modeling, experimental, technology, and parameterization components, directed at diagnosing model deficiencies and critical knowledge gaps, conducting experimental studies, and developing tools for model improvements. The access to the Granite Mountain Atmospheric Sciences Testbed of the U.S. Army Dugway Proving Ground, as well as to a suite of conventional and novel high-end airborne and surface measurement platforms, has provided an unprecedented opportunity to investigate phenomena of time scales from a few seconds to a few days, covering spatial extents of tens of kilometers down to millimeters. This article provides an overview of the MATERHORN and a glimpse at its initial findings. Orographic forcing creates a multitude of time-dependent submesoscale phenomena that contribute to the variability of mountain weather at mesoscale. The nexus of predictions by mesoscale model ensembles and observations are described, identifying opportunities for further improvements in mountain weather forecasting.

Flow in a stably stratified environment is characterized by anisotropic and intermittent turbulence and wavelike motions of varying amplitudes and periods. Understanding turbulence intermittency and wave-turbulence interactions in a stably stratified flow remains a challenging issue in geosciences including planetary atmospheres and oceans. The stable atmospheric boundary layer (SABL) commonly occurs when the ground surface is cooled by longwave radiation emission such as at night over land surfaces, or even daytime over snow and ice surfaces, and when warm air is advected over cold surfaces. Intermittent turbulence intensification in the SABL impacts human activities and weather variability, yet it cannot be generated in state-of-the-art numerical forecast models. This failure is mainly due to a lack of understanding of the physical mechanisms for seemingly random turbulence generation in a stably stratified flow, in which wave-turbulence interaction is a potential mechanism for turbulence intermittency. A workshop on wave-turbulence interactions in the SABL addressed the current understanding and challenges of wave-turbulence interactions and the role of wavelike motions in contributing to anisotropic and intermittent turbulence from the perspectives of theory, observations, and numerical parameterization. There have been a number of reviews on waves, and a few on turbulence in stably stratified flows, but not much on wave-turbulence interactions. This review focuses on the nocturnal SABL; however, the discussions here on intermittent turbulence and wave-turbulence interactions in stably stratified flows underscore important issues in stably stratified geophysical dynamics in general. A series of tri- and tetraorganotin compounds containing the optically active 2-(4-isopropyl-2-oxazolinyl)-5-phenyl ligand and tert -butyl, methyl and/or phenyl groups on the tin has been synthesized. All the novel compounds have been characterized, especially by means of the multinuclear NMR investigation, the results of which are discussed. The tin halides, as pairs of diastereoisomers in solution, crystallize in the form of one diastereoisomer. The single-crystal X-ray analysis of tin iodide 10a revealed pseudo -equatorial position of the tert -butyl group opposite to the isopropyl group. In the corresponding diastereomeric tin hydrides values of 1 J ( 1 H– 117/119 Sn) differ significantly, suggesting a different pseudo -axial/equatorial position of the hydrogen atom.

Turbulent and mean meteorological data collected at five levels on a 20-m tower over the Arctic pack ice during the Surface Heat Budget of the Arctic Ocean experiment (SHEBA) are analyzed to examine different regimes of the stable boundary layer (SBL). Eleven months of measurements during SHEBA cover a wide range of stability conditions, from the weakly unstable regime to very stable stratification. Scaling arguments and our analysis show that the SBL can be classified into four major regimes: (i) surface-layer scaling regime (weakly stable case), (ii) transition regime, (iii) turbulent Ekman layer, and (iv) intermittently turbulent Ekman layer (supercritical stable regime). These four regimes may be considered as the basic states of the traditional SBL. Sometimes these regimes, especially the last two, can be markedly perturbed by gravity waves, detached elevated turbulence (‘upside down SBL’), and inertial oscillations. Traditional Monin–Obukhov similarity theory works well in the weakly stable regime. In the transition regime, Businger–Dyer formulations work if scaling variables are re-defined in terms of local fluxes, although stability function estimates expressed in these terms include more scatter compared to the surface-layer scaling. As stability increases, the near-surface turbulence is affected by the turning effects of the Coriolis force (the turbulent Ekman layer). In this regime, the surface layer, where the turbulence is continuous, may be very shallow (< 5 m). Turbulent transfer near the critical Richardson number is characterized by small but still significant heat flux and negligible stress. The supercritical stable regime, where the Richardson number exceeds a critical value, is associated with collapsed turbulence and the strong influence of the earth’s rotation even near the surface. In the limit of very strong stability, the stress is no longer a primary scaling parameter.

In 1996, version 2.5 of the Coupled Ocean–Atmosphere Response Experiment (COARE) bulk algorithm was published, and it has become one of the most frequently used algorithms in the air–sea interaction community. This paper describes steps taken to improve the algorithm in several ways. The number of iterations to solve for stability has been shortened from 20 to 3, and adjustments have been made to the basic profile stability functions. The scalar transfer coefficients have been redefined in terms of the mixing ratio, which is the fundamentally conserved quantity, rather than the measured water vapor mass concentration. Both the velocity and scalar roughness lengths have been changed. For the velocity roughness, the original fixed value of the Charnock parameter has been replaced by one that increases with wind speeds of between 10 and 18 m s−1. This paper focuses on the study of momentum flux between ocean and atmosphere in light winds and is based on the data collected during several field campaigns, the Atlantic Stratocumulus Transition Experiment, the Tropical Ocean Global Atmosphere Coupled Ocean–Atmosphere Response Experiment, and the San Clemente Ocean Probing Experiment. Weak wind at sea is frequently accompanied by the presence of fast-traveling ocean swell, which dramatically affects momentum transfer. It is found that the mean momentum flux (uw covariance) decreases monotonically with decreasing wind speed, and reaches zero around a wind speed U ≈ 1.5–2 m s−1, which corresponds to wave age cp/U ≈ 10 for wave/swell conditions of the experiments in this study. Further decrease of the wind speed (i.e., increase of the wave age) leads to a sign reversal of the momentum flux, implying negative drag coefficient.
