Abstract

Le cuivre est utilisé pour contrôler diverses maladies fongiques ou bactériennes, principalement sur vigne, en productions fruitières et en cultures légumières. Il constitue la seule substance active à effet fongicide fort et gamme d'action large homologuée en agriculture biologique. Or la mise en évidence d'effets environnementaux négatifs du cuivre, notamment sur les organismes du sol, a conduit à des restrictions réglementaires d'usage (plafonnement des doses autorisées), et même à son interdiction comme pesticide dans certains pays d'Europe du Nord. De ces restrictions croissantes à l'emploi du cuivre, qui posent des difficultés notamment aux producteurs qui ne peuvent recourir à des fongicides de synthèse, découle une demande récurrente d'"alternatives". De nombreux travaux expérimentaux ont ainsi été menés pour identifier et tester d'autres techniques l'emploi de variétés résistantes aux maladies, l'application de substances d'origine naturelle à effet biocide et/ou stimulant les défenses naturelles des plantes, l'utilisation d'agents microbiologiques de lutte, l'adoption de conduites des peuplements cultivés à visée prophylactique, l'installation de protections physiques. Les résultats restent toutefois dispersés et ces méthodes de lutte peu mises en oeuvre sur le terrain. Issu d'une expertise scientifique collective, cet ouvrage est une synthèse pluridisciplinaire et critique des connaissances disponibles sur le sujet. Il présente et étudie les différentes techniques potentiellement efficaces contre les agents pathogènes contrôlés par les traitements cupriques, et la nécessité de les combiner dans des systèmes intégrés de protection des cultures.

40. Genetic structure of Aphanomyces euteiches populations sampled from United States and France pea nurseries.

Abstract

Aphanomyces euteiches Drechsler is an oomycete pathogen of leguminous crops that causes root rot, a severe disease of pea ( Pisum sativum L.) worldwide. An improved understanding of the genetic structure of A. euteiches populations would increase knowledge of pathogen evolution and assist in the design of strategies to develop pea cultivars and germplasm with stable disease resistance. Twenty six primers pairs were used to amplify Sequence Related Amplified Polymorphisms (SRAP) among 49 A. euteiches isolates sampled from pea. A total of 190 polymorphic SRAP bands were generated, of which 82 were polymorphic between all the A. euteiches isolates. The percentage of polymorphic bands per primer pair ranged from 22 to 75%. According to the PIC value estimated for each marker, 60% of the SRAP markers were highly to reasonably informative (PIC > 0.25). Genetic structure of A. euteiches populations sampled in different American and French locations showed low to high genetic diversity within populations. The largest variation occurred within countries, with a total estimated genetic diversity of 0.477 and 0.172 for American and French populations, respectively. This was particularly evident from a principal component analysis (PCA) and a Minimum Spanning Networks (MSN) based on genetic profiles of isolates, which generated two different clusters, one corresponding to the French isolates and four American isolates (MV1, MV5, MV7, Ath3), and the other to American isolates. A. euteiches populations from cultivated pea in France appeared as a single unstructured population, whereas American isolates of A. euteiches diverged into three different populations. Abstract

In a disease complex, different pathogen species cause similar symptoms on a common host plant species. These pathogens commonly develop simultaneously in a field and can then infect the same host individuals. Co-occurring pathogens may affect each other, through antagonism and/or synergism. An important question is the ecological and pathological consequences of co-occurrence of pathogenic species within a disease complex. By using two pathogens (Mycosphaerella pinodes and Phoma medicaginis var. pinodella) of the Ascochyta blight complex, this study aimed at describing how co-occurrence affects the development of pathogens and disease severity, and at defining the prerequisites for interactions between pathogens. Results showed that the presence of the two pathogens on the same host plant organ limited the disease development and their reproduction. Damages caused by the two pathogens, however, increased when plants that had been previously inoculated were inoculated with the other species. The development of one pathogen species can be affected by a subsequent pathogen inoculation. Co-occurrence of pathogens within a disease complex can then limit or favour plant damages and pathogens reproduction. It would be one of the main forces that shape pathogen community structures and therefore the dynamics of diseases in field.

Abstract

Controlling bacterial plant diseases remains a challenge, as direct chemical control is usually not possible. Obtaining new biocontrol methods, in particular efficient biomolecules able to boost defence reactions and limit infection or symptom development, is therefore of major importance. This study screened extracts from leaves of two Mediterranean plants rich in bioactive phenolic compounds, olive and carob, for their ability to reduce soft rot severity and to trigger phenylalanine ammonia-lyase (PAL) activity in potato tuber slices. Extracts from olive leaves significantly reduced disease severity caused by Pectobacterium atrosepticum or Pectobacterium carotovorum, whereas carob leaf extracts significantly increased it. Olive extracts and its main phenolic components, oleuropein and hydroxytyrosol, also significantly increased PAL activity 7.5 h after application. None of the extracts or purified molecules reduced bacterial growth in vitro. Furthermore, the effect of these extracts varied according to potato cultivars. These data therefore open new ways for the biological control of soft rot bacteria, but stress the importance of understanding the causes of response difference in different potato varieties in order to obtain optimal efficacy.
