Future quantum networks will rely on the ability to coherently transfer optically encoded quantum information between different wavelength bands. Bragg-scattering four-wave mixing in optical fiber is a promising route to achieving this, but requires fibers with precise dispersion control and broadband transmission at signal, target and pump wavelengths. Here we introduce a photonic crystal fiber with a germanium-doped core featuring group velocity matching at 1550 nm, the telecoms C-band, and 920 nm, within the emission range of efficient single photon sources based on InAs quantum dots. With low chromatic walk-off and good optical guidance even at long wavelengths, large lengths of this fiber are used to achieve nanometer-scale frequency shifts between wavelengths around 920 nm with up to 79.4\% internal conversion efficiency, allowing dissimilar InAs dots to be interfaced. We also show how cascading this frequency conversion can be used to generate a frequency comb away from telecoms wavelengths. Finally, we use the fiber to demonstrate tunable frequency conversion of weak classical signals around 918 nm to the telecoms C-band.

The interaction of excitonic transitions with confined photonic modes enables tests of quantum physics and design of efficient optoelectronic devices. Here we study how key metrics such as Purcell factor, beta-factor and collection efficiency are determined by the non-cavity modes which exist in real devices, taking the well-studied micropillar cavity as an example. Samples with dots at different positions in the cavity field allow us to quantify the effect of the non-cavity modes and show that the zero-phonon line and the phonon-assisted emission into the cavity mode HE11 is suppressed by positioning dots at the field node., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

Quantum dots have the potential to be the brightest deterministic single photon source with plausible high end applications in quantum computing and cluster state generation. In this work, we re-examine the design of simple micropillars by meticulously examining the structural effects of the decay into leaky channels beyond the atom-like cavity estimation. We show that precise control of the side losses with the diameter and avoidance of propagating Bloch modes in the DBR structure can result in easy to manufacture broadband (Q$\approx750-2500$) micropillars and demonstrate extremely high internal efficiency ($90.5\%-96.4\%$). We also demonstrate that such cavities naturally decouple from the phonon sideband, with the phonon sideband reducing by a factor of $5-33$ allowing us to predict that the photons should show $99.2\%-99.8\%$ indistinguishability.

We study the resonance fluorescence properties of an optically active spin 1/2 system, elucidating the effects of a magnetic field on the coherence of the scattered light. We derive a master equation model for this system that reproduces the results of a two level system (TLS) while also being applicable to a spin system with ground state coupling. This model is then solved analytically in the weak excitation regime. The inclusion of spin dynamics in our model alters the properties of the coherently scattered light at a fundamental level. For a TLS the coherence properties are known to be determined by the input laser. We show that spin scattered light inherits the coherence properties of the spin. This mapping allows us to measure spin dynamics and coherence time through direct measurement of the scattered fields. Furthermore, we show the ability to resolve sub-natural linewidth zeeman splittings. Along with representing an invaluable tool for spin spectroscopy understanding the coherence properties of the spin-scattered field will be vital for spin-photon based quantum technologies., Comment: 13 pages, 6 figures

We have developed a process to mass-produce quantum dot micropillar cavities using direct-write lithography. This technique allows us to achieve high volume patterning of high aspect ratio pillars with vertical, smooth sidewalls maintaining a high quality factor for diameters below 2.0 $\mu$m. Encapsulating the cavities in a thin layer of oxide (Ta$_2$O$_5$) prevents oxidation in the atmosphere, preserving the optical properties of the cavity over months of ambient exposure. We confirm that single dots in the cavities can be deterministically excited to create high purity indistinguishable single photons with interference visibility $(96.2\pm0.7)\%$.

We investigate the effect of nuclear spins on the phase shift and polarisation rotation of photons scattered off a quantum dot-cavity system. We show that as the phase shift depends strongly on the resonance energy of an electronic transition in the quantum dot, it can provide a sensitive probe of the quantum state of nuclear spins that broaden this transition energy. By including the electron-nuclear spin coupling at a Hamiltonian level within an extended input-output formalism, we show how a photon scattering event acts as a nuclear spin measurement, which when rapidly applied leads to an inhibition of the nuclear spin dynamics via the quantum Zeno effect, and a corresponding stabilisation of the optical resonance. We show how such an effect manifests in the intensity autocorrelation $g^{(2)}(\tau)$ of scattered photons, whose long-time bunching behaviour changes from quadratic decay for low photon scattering rates (weak laser intensities), to ever slower exponential decay for increasing laser intensities as optical measurements impede the nuclear spin evolution., Comment: 8 pages, 3 figures

Quantum dots (QDs) are semiconductor nanostructures in which a three dimensional potential trap produces an electronic quantum confinement, thus mimicking the behaviour of single atomic dipole-like transitions. However unlike atoms, QDs can be incorporated into solid state photonic devices such as cavities or waveguides that enhance the light-matter interaction. A near unit efficiency light-matter interaction is essential for deterministic, scalable quantum information (QI) devices. In this limit, a single photon input into the device will undergo a large rotation of the polarization of the light field due to the strong interaction with the QD. In this paper we measure a macroscopic ($\sim6^o$) phase shift of light as a result of the interaction with a negatively charged QD coupled to a low quality-factor (Q$\sim290$) pillar microcavity. This unexpectedly large rotation angle demonstrates this simple low Q-factor design would enable near deterministic light-matter interactions., Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures

By performing a full analysis of the projected local density of states (LDOS) in a photonic crystal waveguide, we show that phase plays a crucial role in the symmetry of the light-matter interaction. By considering a quantum dot (QD) spin coupled to a photonic crystal waveguide (PCW) mode, we demonstrate that the light-matter interaction can be asymmetric, leading to unidirectional emission and a deterministic entangled photon source. Further we show that understanding the phase associated with both the LDOS and the QD spin is essential for a range of devices that that can be realised with a QD in a PCW. We also show how quantum entanglement can completely reverse photon propagation direction, and highlight a fundamental breakdown of the semiclassical dipole approximation for describing light-matter interactions in these spin dependent systems., Comment: Updated version fixes some errors.
