W dniach 15–17 marca 2022 r. w Instytucie Badawczym Leśnictwa odbyła się XII Sesja Zimowej Szkoły Leśnej, której tematem był „Wpływ zmian klimatu na środowisko leśne”. Spośród licznych propozycji, o wyborze powyższego tematu przesądziło obserwowane od wielu lat systematyczne pogorszanie się stanu zdrowotnego drzewostanów na skutek synergicznego oddziaływania wielu czynników abiotycznych i biotycznych w warunkach zmian klimatu. Współorganizatorem Sesji była Dyrekcja Generalna Lasów Państwowych. Merytoryczne aspekty XII Sesji zostały przygotowane i opracowane przez Radę Programową Zimowej Szkoły Leśnej w składzie: dr hab. Krzysztof Stereńczak, prof. IBL (przewodniczący), prof. dr hab. Bogdan Brzeziecki, mgr inż. Michał Graczyk, prof. dr hab. Andrzej Grzywacz, prof. dr hab. Andrzej Jagodziński, prof. dr hab. Janusz Olejnik, mgr inż. Jan Tabor, mgr inż. Krzysztof Rostek, prof. dr hab. Iwona Skrzecz, dr inż. Klaudia Ziemblińska. Rada Programowa określiła nie tylko zakres problematyki XII Sesji, ale także propozycje tematyczne referatów zamawianych oraz ich autorów. W trakcie trzech dni obrad prelegenci przedstawili 33 referaty. Referaty wygłosili również zaproszeni goście zagraniczni reprezentujący: Uniwersytet w Helsinkach, Czeski Uniwersytet Przyrodniczy w Pradze, Instytut Badań nad Zmianami Globalnymi (Czechy), Uniwersytet Wspólnoty Wirginii, Łotewski Państwowy Instytut Badawczy Leśnictwa oraz Integrated Carbon Observation System. W XII Sesji, która odbyła się w wersji online, wzięło udział niemal 200 osób reprezentujących m.in.: Ministerstwo Klimatu i Środowiska, jednostki organizacyjne Lasów Państwowych, ośrodki uniwersyteckie i instytuty badawcze. Liczne grono stanowili również przedstawiciele ośrodków naukowych oraz polskich uczelni leśnych.

Puszcza Białowieska od wieków uważana jest za niepowtarzalny i bardzo cenny obiekt leśny. Obszar ten był bardzo ważny dla leśników, którzy uczyli się tam różnych metod odnowienia i prowadzenia lasów, dla ekologów, którzy mogli obserwować ciekawe procesy zachodzące w ekosystemach leśnych oraz dla społeczeństwa, które mogło poznać, czym charakteryzowały się lasy, które wieki temu pokrywały duże obszary Polski. Obszar Puszczy Białowieskiej od dawna był obiektem intensywnie eksploatowanym przez świat nauki. Prowadzono tu badania dotyczące dynamiki drzewostanów, siedliskoznawstwa i zespołów roślinnych, dynamiki populacji różnych gatunków zwierząt oraz badania dotyczące grzybów. Specyfiką badań drzewostanów było wykorzystanie terenowych powierzchni próbnych, na których w zależności od potrzeb wykonywano pomiary różnych faz rozwojowych drzewostanów. Następnie, wykorzystując metody statystyczne, charakteryzowano stan i kierunki zmian zachodzących w zbiorowiskach leśnych Puszczy Białowieskiej. Projekt „LIFE+ ForBioSensing PL Kompleksowy monitoring dynamiki drzewostanów Puszczy Białowieskiej z wykorzystaniem danych teledetekcyjnych” powstał w 2012 roku z inicjatywy ówczesnego Dyrektora Instytutu Badawczego Leśnictwa, prof. dra hab. Tomasza Zawiły-Niedźwieckiego. Impulsem do powstania niniejszego projektu była chęć zastosowania w analizie procesów zachodzących w drzewostanach puszczańskich danych teledetekcyjnych, głównie danych pochodzących z lotniczego skanowania laserowego. Dane teledetekcyjne umożliwiają charakterystykę drzewostanów w określonym terminie. Pozyskanie danych w kilku okresach umożliwia nie tylko opisanie statycznej sytuacji, ale również pozwala na charakterystykę zmian zachodzących w drzewostanach Puszczy Białowieskiej. Dodatkowo, tego typu dane stanowią punkt odniesienia do analiz stanu Puszczy Białowieskiej w kolejnych dziesięcioleciach, przy zastosowaniu nowych metod analizy i interpretacji. Projekt zakładał opracowanie i praktyczne zastosowanie systemu monitoringu lasów Puszczy Białowieskiej z wykorzystaniem naziemnych powierzchni monitoringowych oraz danych teledetekcyjnych. Głównym celem działań prowadzonych w ramach projektu było powiązanie kilkukrotnie pozyskanych zdalnie danych (w latach: 2015-2019) z wynikami kilku pomiarów naziemnych, a tym samym umożliwienie i ułatwienie późniejszego monitorowania procesów zachodzących w całej Puszczy. Z założenia, zaplanowany monitoring dotyczył wybranych elementów dynamiki drzewostanów i ograniczony był możliwościami danych teledetekcyjnych. W ramach projektu założono i zinwentaryzowano 685 stałych powierzchni próbnych w terenie, które posłużyły jako naziemne powierzchnie monitoringowe. Podkreślić przy tym należy, iż projekt ForBioSensing po raz pierwszy w historii stworzył siatkę powierzchni monitoringowych rozlokowanych losowo na całym obszarze polskiej części Puszczy Białowieskiej, obejmując tym samym wszystkie jednostki administracyjne i formy ochrony przyrody. Było to 355 powierzchni rozmieszczonych w siatce 1300 m × 1300 m, o jednym boku ułożonym według azymutu 330º (więcej szczegółów w podrozdz. 1.4 w rozdz. 4, patrz również mapa załącznik numer 1). Dodatkowo, w ramach projektu wykorzystano szereg już istniejących stałych powierzchni próbnych o dłuższej historii pomiarów i uzyskane dzięki nim dane empiryczne. Było to 160 powierzchni badawczych rozlokowanych schematycznie w Białowieskim Parku Narodowym (w siatce ok. 267 m × 1067 m) (por. podrozdz. 1.3 w rozdz. 4 oraz ryc. 2 w rozdz. 6) oraz 170 powierzchni badawczych Instytutu Badawczego Leśnictwa rozmieszczonych arbitralnie w najlepiej zachowanych fragmentach polskiej części Puszczy Białowieskiej (por. mapa 1). W wyniku działań prowadzonych w ramach projektu zweryfikowano przydatność poszczególnych danych teledetekcyjnych w monitorowaniu kompleksów leśnych, określono, które cechy drzew i drzewostanów mogą być monitorowane z wykorzystaniem tych danych oraz określono najlepsze rodzaje danych teledetekcyjnych w analizach dynamiki drzewostanów. Dodatkowo, w oparciu o dane naziemne określono dynamikę wszystkich generacji drzew Puszczy Białowieskiej w okresie objętym monitoringiem, zinwentaryzowano stan martwego drewna w drzewostanach puszczańskich, wykonano analizy najszerszego jak dotąd materiału dendrochronologicznego na obszarze polskiej części Puszczy Białowieskiej, zebrano dane na temat aktualnych zmian obwodu pni głównych gatunków drzew występujących na tym obszarze, przeanalizowano dynamikę odnowienia w lukach oraz wykonano mapę zbiorowisk leśnych. Wyniki projektu oraz efekty prowadzonych prac zostały szeroko rozpropagowane wśród społeczeństwa. Blisko 5 mln osób zostało bezpośrednio poinformowanych o projekcie i/lub jego działaniach. W ramach projektu stworzono serię filmów i audycji radiowych. Promocja projektu odbywała się na różnego rodzaju spotkaniach, organizowanych m.in. przez zespół projektowy, a także w trakcie masowych imprez (np. Dniach Ziemi) czy konferencji naukowych. Najważniejsze fakty dotyczące projektu są następujące: ● Okres realizacji projektu: 1.10.2014 r. – 30.04.2022 r.; ● Źródło finansowania: Komisja Europejska w ramach Instrumentu Life+, oraz Narodowy Fundusz Ochrony Środowiska i Gospodarki Wodnej oraz Instytut Badawczy Leśnictwa; ● Numery umów: KE: LIFE13 ENV/PL/000048; NFOŚiGW: 485/2014/WN10/OP-NM-LF/D; ● Kwota finansowania: KE: 1 955 251 €; NFOŚiGW: 1 755 616 €; IBL: 352 559 €; ● Beneficjent: Instytut Badawczy Leśnictwa. Jednym z trzech najważniejszych obszarów aktywności w projekcie ForBioSensing, poza wykonywaniem zadań merytorycznych i upowszechnianiem uzyskiwanych wyników, był ciągły proces zarządzania projektem. Każdy projekt, a w szczególności projekt charakteryzujący się dużą liczbą wzajemnie powiązanych zadań, interakcji z licznymi interesariuszami, długim czasem realizacji, dużym zespołem projektowym, licznymi ryzykami oraz wielością instytucji finansujących, wymaga metodycznego zarządzania. Już na etapie wnioskowania o projekt ForBioSensing zaplanowano w nim liczne narzędzia umożliwiające efektywne zarządzanie przedmiotowym projektem, ciągłą kontrolę jego realizacji i osiągnięcie zaplanowanych rezultatów (produktów). Zarządzanie projektem ForBioSensing oparto o wybrane elementy metodyki PRINCE2. Powołano Komitet Sterujący Projektem, kierownictwo oraz zespół projektowy. Szczególnie dużą uwagę skierowano na stworzenie efektywnego zespołu projektowego. W ramach projektu zdefiniowano kilkanaście ról projektowych wraz z zakresem ich odpowiedzialności i przypisano je do poszczególnych osób. W momencie przygotowywania niniejszej publikacji, z perspektywy kończącego się projektu, można ocenić, że to właśnie odpowiednie zaplanowanie i poprowadzenie przez doświadczone kierownictwo kompetentnego i zaangażowanego zespołu projektowego (ponad 60 osób) było jednym z podstawowych czynników umożliwiających sprawne przeprowadzenie i ukończenie prac. Drugim z najważniejszych elementów zapewniających pomyślne wykonanie i zakończenie projektu było zaprojektowanie licznych mechanizmów monitorowania poprawności przebiegu przedsięwzięcia. W projekcie ForBioSensing zaprojektowano blisko 170 mierzalnych wskaźników (produktów projektu, kamieni milowych, wskaźników postępu w zadaniach, wskaźników dotyczących spotkań), których sukcesywne osiąganie w ramach 19 głównych zadań (grup zadań) zapewniło kontrolę przebiegu projektu. Kolejnym, bez wątpienia jednym z najważniejszych elementów, było zaplanowanie efektywnej komunikacji, zarówno formalnej, jak i nieformalnej. W obszarze komunikacji zaplanowano blisko 40 formalnych sprawozdań z przebiegu realizacji projektu, składanych do instytucji współfinansujących projekt, formalne kanały komunikacji w postaci funkcjonowania licznych rejestrów (ryzyk, zagadnień, doświadczeń), częste cykliczne spotkania na różnych poziomach zarządzania projektem oraz odpowiednią lokację zespołów zapewniającą nieformalną komunikację bezpośrednią. Niniejsza publikacja jest podsumowaniem działań wykonanych w projekcie ForBioSensing. Obejmuje ona zarówno materiał wcześniej niepublikowany, jak i wdrożenie, na obszarze polskiej części Puszczy Białowieskiej, metod analizy danych teledetekcyjnych, które zostały już szeroko przedstawione w licznych publikacjach naukowych.

Tree species composition maps derived from hyperspectral data have been found to be accurate but it is still unclear whether an optimal time window exists to acquire the images. Trees in temperate forests are subject to phenological changes that are species-specific and can have an impact on species recognition. Our study examined the performance of a multitemporal hyperspectral dataset to classify tree species in the Polish part of the Białowieża Forest. We classified seven tree species including spruce (Picea abies (L.) H.Karst), pine (Pinus sylvestris L.), alder (Alnus glutinosa Gaertn.), oak (Quercus robur L.), birch (Betula pendula Roth), hornbeam (Carpinus betulus L.) and linden (Tilia cordata Mill.), using Support Vector Machines. We compared the results for three data acquisitions—early and late summer (2–4 July and 24–27 August), and autumn (1–2 October) as well as a classification based on an image stack containing all three acquisitions. Furthermore, the sizes (height and crown diameter) of misclassified and correctly classified trees of the same species were compared. The early summer acquisition reached the highest accuracies with an Overall Accuracy (OA) of 83–94 per cent and Kappa (κ) of 0.80–0.92. The classification based on the stacked multitemporal dataset resulted in slightly higher accuracies (84–94 per cent OA and 0.81–0.92 κ). For some species, e.g. birch and oak, tree size differed notably for correctly and incorrectly classified trees. We conclude that implementing multitemporal hyperspectral data can improve the classification result as compared with a single acquisition. However, the obtained accuracy of the multitemporal image stack was in our case comparable to the best single-date classification and investing more time in identifying regionally optimal acquisition windows may be worthwhile as long hyperspectral acquisitions are still sparse.

Disturbances caused by biotic and abiotic agents are inherent processes of forest ecosystems and often play a key role in forming the ecosystems themselves. However, they also may negatively affect wood production and alter ecosystem services. Thus, precise and up-to-date spatial information on invasion presence and dynamic is essential when planning protective and sanitary actions. Gathering such data is still challenging if large areas, with limited access, are affected. This study addresses this issue by suggesting a GIS-workflow based on high-resolution multi-temporal remote sensing data to describe the spread of a bark beetle outbreak by mapping dead trees on a single tree level and estimating timber losses associated with the infestations in the Polish part of the Bialowieza Forest (BF) in 2015. Along with field inventories, airborne hyperspectral data were collected in 2015 at three acquisition dates: 2–4 July, between August 24th and 27th and between 1st and 2nd October with a HySpex VNIR-1800 camera. Airborne laser scanning data were collected during 2–5 July 2015 using a Riegl LMS-Q680i scanner. The analysis consisted of three steps: (i) hyperspectral images were used to stratify the area into living vegetation and all other classes (including dead trees); (ii) a single tree delineation was performed and individual tree volumes were calculated based on a volume ∼ height allometry; (iii) the delineated trees were assigned as either living trees or dead trees (snags). Based on these data bark beetle dynamics between the three time steps were analysed. The results show that the Ips typographus outbreak in BF in 2015 was very dynamic. The volume of dead standing spruce detected in subsequent dates was as follows: July – 503 410 m3; August – 640 692 m3; October – 737 978 m3 New groups of dead trees in the flat landscape of Bialowieza forest appeared preferably but not only in the immediate vicinity of trees classified as dead in the previous period. New infestations were also identified over 100 m away from earlier infested trees. On the other hand, we could not identify any tendencies in terms of the spread direction which makes the prediction of the spread-dynamics challenging in our study area.

The Białowieża Forest (BF), a unique ecosystem of historical significance in central Europe, has a long history of assumed human settlement, with at least 200 known archaeological sites (until 2016). This study uncovers new evidence of the cultural heritage of this unique forest area using Airborne Laser Scanning (ALS) technology combined with traditional archaeological field assessment methods to verify the ALS data interpretations and to provide additional evidence about the function and origin of the newly detected archaeological sites. The results of this study include (1) a scientific approach for an improved identification of archaeological resources in forest areas; (2) new evidence about the history of the human use of the BF based on ALS data, covering the entire Polish part of the BF; and (3) an improved remote sensing infrastructure, supporting existing GIS (Geographic Information System) systems for the BF, a famous UNESCO Heritage site. Our study identified numerous locations with evidence of past human agricultural activities known in the literature as “field systems”, “lynchets” and “Celtic fields”. The initial identification included more than 300 km of possible field boundaries and plough headlands, many of which we have verified on the ground. Various past human activities creating those boundaries have existed since the (pre-) Roman Period up to the 13th century AD. The results of this study demonstrate that past human activities in the Polish part of the Białowieża Forest had been more prevalent than previously believed. As a practical result of the described activities, a geodatabase was created; this has practical applications for the system of monument protection in Poland, as well as for local communities and the BF’s management and conservation. The more widely achieved results are in line with the implementation of the concept of a cultural heritage inventory in forested and protected areas—the actions taken specify (built globally) the forms of protection and management of cultural and environmental goods.

The main goal of this research is to shed further light on the sensitivity of the vegetation indices to spatial changes of stand parameters. The analysis was done within mountain forests in the Sudetes and the Beskids in southern Poland. Some 1327 stands were analysed with more than 70 percent of spruce contribution in the species composition. The response of selected vegetation indices was verified in relation to the alterations of spruce participation, stand height, volume, stand density and diameter. The following indices were analysed: Normalized Difference Vegetation Index, Normalized Difference Red Edge Index, Green Normalized Difference Vegetation Index and Wide Dynamic Range Vegetation Index. Indices were calculated based on the Rapid Eye (Black Bridge) images. All the analysed stand characteristics influence the values of vegetation indices. In general: mean height, diameter at breast height, volume and spruce participation are the most negatively correlated with the indices. Density is a variable that, in general, cannot directly be used for indices correction, because it is hard to find any stable trend. NDRE is the most stable index for the analysis of stand characteristics.

W dniach 12–14 marca 2019 r. w Instytucie Badawczym Leśnictwa odbyła się XI Sesja Zimowej Szkoły Leśnej (ZSL), której tematem było „Zastosowanie geoinformatyki w leśnictwie”. Współorganizatorem Sesji była Dyrekcja Generalna Lasów Państwowych. Merytoryczne aspekty XI Sesji zostały przygotowane i opracowane przez Radę Programową Zimowej Szkoły Leśnej w składzie: prof. dr hab. Andrzej Grzywacz, prof. dr hab. Jacek Hilszczański, dr inż. Krzysztof Janeczko, prof. dr hab. Andrzej Klocek, mgr inż. Jacek Przypaśniak, mgr inż. Marek Roman, dr inż. Jacek Sagan, dr hab. Krzysztof Stereńczak, prof. IBL (przewodniczący), mgr inż. Adam Wasiak, prof. dr hab. Tomasz Zawiła-Niedźwiecki. Rada Programowa określiła nie tylko zakres problematyki XI Sesji, ale także propozycje tematyczne referatów zamawianych oraz wytypowania ich autorów. W trakcie XI Sesji referaty wygłosili zaproszeni goście zagraniczni reprezentujący Remote Sensing Research and Consulting Ltd. (Szwajcaria), Wyższą Szkołę Techniczną w Zurychu (Szwajcaria), Norweski Uniwersytet Przyrodniczy – NMBU, Federalny Instytut Badawczy Lasu, Śniegu i Krajobrazu (Szwajcaria), Uniwersytet we Fryburgu (Niemcy), Uniwersytet Florencki (Włochy), Instytut Geografii i Geoekologii i Instytut Technologii w Karlsruhe (Niemcy), Instytut Lasu im. Sukaczewa Syberyjskiej Filii Rosyjskiej Akademii Nauk, Federalne Centrum Badawcze «Krasnoyarsk Science Center SB RAS» i Syberyjski Uniwersytet Federalny (Rosja) oraz Uniwersytet w Cambridge (Wielka Brytania). Poza gośćmi z zagranicy na Zimowej Szkole Leśnej wystąpiło szerokie grono autorów z Polski, prezentujących wiele przykładów wykorzystania geoinformatyki w leśnictwie. W tym miejscu składam serdeczne podziękowanie autorom za przygotowanie i wygłoszenie interesujących referatów, a także za opracowanie tekstów wystąpień, które znajdą Państwo w niniejszych materiałach posesyjnych. W XI Sesji ZSL wzięło udział prawie 400 osób reprezentujących m.in.: kierownictwo Lasów Państwowych oraz jednostki organizacyjne PGL LP i Ministerstwo Środowiska. Najliczniejszą grupę słuchaczy Szkoły stanowili zarówno geomatycyreprezentujący szeroko rozumiany świat nauki, jak i firmy zajmujące się wdrożeniami i praktyką, pracownicy nadleśnictw oraz biur urządzania lasu i geodezji leśnej, na co dzień korzystających z narzędzi geoinformatycznych. Liczne grono stanowili przedstawiciele ośrodków naukowych, a także studentów polskich wydziałów leśnych.

Spatially explicit information on tree species composition of managed and natural forests, plantations and urban vegetation provides valuable information for nature conservationists as well as for forest and urban managers and is frequently required over large spatial extents. Over the last four decades, advances in remote sensing technology have enabled the classification of tree species from several sensor types. While studies using remote sensing data to classify and map tree species reach back several decades, a recent review on the status, potentials, challenges and outlooks in this realm is missing. Here, we search for major trends in remote sensing techniques for tree species classification and discuss the effectiveness of different sensors and algorithms based on a literature review. This review demonstrates that the number of studies focusing on tree species classification has increased constantly over the last four decades and promising local scale approaches have been presented for several sensor types. However, there are few examples for tree species classifications over large geographic extents, and bridging the gap between current approaches and tree species inventories over large geographic extents is still one of the biggest challenges of this research field. Furthermore, we found only few studies which systematically described and examined the traits that drive the observed variance in the remote sensing signal and thereby enable or hamper species classifications. Most studies followed data-driven approaches and pursued an optimization of classification accuracy, while a concrete hypothesis or a targeted application was missing in all but a few exceptional studies. We recommend that future research efforts focus stronger on the causal understanding of why tree species classification approaches work under certain conditions or – maybe even more important - why they do not work in other cases. This might require more complex field acquisitions than those typically used in the reviewed studies. At the same time, we recommend reducing the number of purely data-driven studies and algorithm-benchmarking studies as these studies are of limited value, especially if the experimental design is limited, e.g. the tree population is not representative and only a few sensors or acquisition settings are simultaneously investigated.

A series of novel chalcones and bis-chalcones containing boronic acid moieties has been synthesized and evaluated for antitumor activity against the human breast cancer MDA-MB-231 (estrogen receptor-negative) and MCF7 (estrogen receptor-positive) cell lines and against two normal breast epithelial cell lines, MCF-10A and MCF-12A. These molecules inhibited the growth of the human breast cancer cell lines at low micromolar to nanomolar concentrations, with five of them (1-4, 9) showing preferential inhibition of the human breast cancer cell lines. Furthermore, bis-chalcone 8 exhibited a more potent inhibition of colon cancer cells expressing wild-type p53 than of an isogenic cell line that was p53-null.

Chalcones and their derivatives have been shown to have potent anticancer activity. However, the exact mechanisms of cytotoxic activity remain to be established. In this study, we have evaluated a series of boronic chalcones for their anticancer activity and mechanisms of action. Among the eight chalcone derivatives tested, 3,5-bis-(4-boronic acid-benzylidene)-1-methyl-piperidin-4-one (AM114) exhibited most potent growth inhibitory activity with IC50 values of 1.5 and 0.6 microM in 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide assay and colony formation assay, respectively. The cytotoxic activity of AM114 was shown to be associated with the accumulation of p53 and p21 proteins and induction of apoptosis. Mechanistic studies showed that AM114 treatment inhibited the chymotrypsin-like activity of the 20S proteasome in vitro, leading to a significant accumulation of ubiquitinated p53 and other cellular proteins in whole cells. In vitro studies showed that AM114 did not significantly disrupt the interaction of p53 and murine double minute 2 protein. It is noteworthy that AM114 as a single agent was preferentially toxic to cells with wild-type p53 expression, whereas combination of this compound with ionizing radiation (IR) significantly enhanced the cell-killing activity of IR in both wild-type p53 and p53-null cells. Together, these results indicate that the boronic chalcone derivative AM114 induces significant cytotoxic effect in cancer cells through the inhibition of the cellular proteasome and provide a rationale for the further development of this class of compounds as novel cancer chemotherapeutic agents.

TFDA is readily prepared from the reaction of fluorosulfonyidifluoroacetic acid with trimethylsilyl chloride, and it is a very effective and efficient source of difluorocarbene for use in addition reactions to alkenes of a broad scope of reactivities. Acid-sensitive substrates may require an additional purification step involving treatment of the distilled TFDA with sufficient Et3N to remove the acid impurity. Other trialkylsilyl fluorosulfonyldifluoroacetates can also be prepared, and they have been found to have reactivities similar to TFDA. The triethyl derivative, TEFDA is more convenient to prepare in a pure state and has similar reactivity to TFDA. Thus, it may prove to be a superior reagent. (C) 2003 Elsevier B.V. Despite recent advances in our understanding of the biological processes leading to the development of cancer, there is still a need for new and effective agents to help bring this disease under control. One of the oldest and most effective strategies for developing new chemotherapeutics is the isolation and evaluation of chemicals of natural origin. The importance of natural products for drug discovery has been impressive: One has to only look at the number of clinically active drugs that are used in cancer therapy to see how many are either natural products or are based on natural products. It is also apparent that materials from natural sources are excellent probes (indicators) for cellular targets that, when modulated, may have a deleterious effect upon the survival or proliferation of tumor cells. And the search goes on. Sesquiterpenes are a class of naturally occurring molecules that have demonstrated therapeutic potential in decreasing the progression of cancer. These molecules are 15-carbon isoprenoid compounds that are typically found in plants and marine life. Although this class of compounds has frequently provided encouraging leads for chemotherapeutics, they have not been evaluated as potential anticancer agents. In this review, we provide a current overview of sesquiterpenoids that have potential as anticancer agents.
