Purpose To treat water pollution, especially the contamination resulted from organic dyes has aroused significant attention around the world, this study aims to prepare the metal organic framework (MOF) materials hybridizing with poly(p-phenylene terephthalamide) (PPTA) by means of a facile refluxing method and to systematically investigate adsorption performance for anionic dye Congo red as target molecule from aqueous solution. Design/methodology/approach The MOF materials hybridized by PPTA were fabricated by virtue of a facile refluxing method, characterized by thermogravimetric analysis, X-ray powder diffraction, Fourier transform infrared and pore structure. Findings The results showed that pseudo-second-order kinetic model could better describe the adsorption process for all the four materials, whereas Elovich model also fitted the process for the hybrid materials with PPTA. Adsorption isotherm analyses indicated that Langmuir isotherm could be used to describe the adsorption process. Introduction of appropriate amount of PPTA could enhance the adsorption affinity of the MOF materials for Congo red, and the maximum adsorption capacity could reach as high as 1,053.41 mg/g while that of the MOF material without PPTA was 666.67 mg/g, indicating introduction of PPTA could change the microenvironment of the MOF materials and increase the adsorption sites, leading to high adsorption efficiency. Research limitations/implications The microstructure of MOF hybridized materials in detail is the further and future investigation. Practical implications This study will provide a method to prepare MOF materials with high efficiency to treat anionic dyes like Congo red from aqueous solution. Originality/value Owing to the special characteristics of PPTA and similar to carbon tube, PPTA was introduced into MOF material to increased corresponding water stability. Because of aromatic ring and amide group on the surface of PPTA, the adsorption efficiency of the hybridized MOF material with appropriate amount of PPTA was greatly enhanced.

The present study was initiated to investigate the geochemical features and associated pollution risks of selected heavy metals in sediments near an active copper sulfide mines, south China. These results indicated that legacy contamination in sediments were mainly Cd (11.9 mg/kg), Cu (0.106%), Pb (0.189%), Zn (0.0958%), and As (0.158%). Furthermore, the geochemical variability of most elements, ranging from 5.66% for K2O to 24.99% for Cd, was relatively lower. On the spatial scale, the variation patterns of multi-elements did not show a decreasing trend. The multivariate statistical analysis revealed that the significant enrichment of the studied elements was mostly related to the geochemical background and anthropogenic sources. Besides that, the stable climate might have positive influences on the leachability patterns of heavy metals in sediment profiles. According to the results of the potential ecological risk index (PERI), Cd, Cu, Pb, and As were identified as the riskiest elements due to their rather higher contribution ratios to pollution risk. In response to continuous exposure risks, the significant enrichment of these mining-derived elements should be preferentially concerned. Finally, some reasonable action is proposed for aquatic environment protection.

To identify specific imaging and clinicopathological features of a rare potentially malignant epithelioid variant of renal lipid-poor angiomyolipoma (E-lpAML).A total of 20 patients with E-lpAML and 43 patients with other lpAML were retrospectively included. Multiphase computed tomography (CT) imaging features and clinicopathological findings were recorded. Independent predictors for E-lpAML were identified using multivariate logistic regression and were used to construct a diagnostic score for differentiation of E-lpAML from other lpAML.The E-lpAML group consisted of 6 men and 14 women (age median ± SD: 39.45 ± 15.70, range: 16.0-68.0 years). E-lpAML tended to appear as hyperdense mass lesions located at the renal sinus (n = 8, 40%) or at the renal cortex (n = 12, 60%), with a "fast-in and slow-out" enhancement pattern (n = 20, 100%), cystic degeneration (n = 18, 90%), "eyeball" sign (n = 11, 55%), and tumor neo-vasculature (n = 15, 75%) on CT. Multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that the independent predictors for diagnosing E-lpAML were cystic degeneration on CT imaging and CT value of the tumor in corticomedullary phase of enhancement. A predictive model was built with the two predictors, achieving an area under the curve (AUC) of 93.5% (95% confidence interval (95%CI): 84.3-98.2%) with a sensitivity of 95.0% (95%CI: 75.1-99.9%) and a specificity of 83.72% (95%CI: 69.3-93.2%).We identified specific CT imaging features and predictors that could contribute to the correct diagnosis of E-lpAML. Our findings should be helpful for clinical management of E-lpAML which could potentially be malignant and may require nephron-sparing surgery while other lpAML tumors which are benign require no intervention.• It is important to differentiate renal epithelioid lipid-poor angiomyolipoma (E-lpAML) from other lpAML because of differences in clinical management. • E-lpAML tumors tend to be large hyperdense tumors in the renal sinus with cystic degeneration and "fast-in and slow-out" pattern of enhancement. • Our CT imaging-based predictive model was robust in its performance for predicting E-lpAML from other lpAML tumors.

The potential environmental implications of a Pb (Lead)-Zn (Zinc) sulfide tailing impoundment were found to be dependent on its geochemical characteristics. One typical lead-zinc sulfide tailing impoundment was studied. Ten boreholes were set with the grid method and 36 tailings were sampled and tested. According to the results of metal content analysis, the tailing samples contained considerably high contents of heavy metals, ranging from 6.99 to 89.0 mg/kg for Cd, 75.3 to 602 mg/kg for Cu, 0.53% to 2.63% for Pb and 0.30% to 2.54% for Zn. Most of the heavy metals in the sample matrix showed a uniform concentration distribution, except Cd. Cd, Pb, Zn, and Mn were associated with each other, and were considered to be the dominant contributors based on hierarchical cluster analysis. XRD, SEM and XPS were employed for evaluation of the tailing weathering characteristics, confirming that the tailings had undergone intensive weathering. The maximum potential acidity of the tailings reached 244 kg H2SO4/ton; furthermore, the bioavailability of heavy metals like Pb, Cd, Cr, Cu, and Zn was 37.8%, 12.9%, 12.2%, 5.95%, and 5.46% respectively. These metals would be potentially released into drainage by the weathering process. Analysis of a gastrointestinal model showed that Pb, Cr, Ni and Cu contained in the tailings were high-risk metals. Thus, control of the heavy metals’ migration and their environmental risks should be planned from the perspective of geochemistry.

The separation and enrichment can be targeted to enrich the rare and precious metals in fly ash and reduce the cost of leaching and recovering of fly ash. Regarding their different properties, the single-component separation was used to obtain uncompleted burned carbon, glass microbeads, minerals, and other characteristic components from the ash. Also, the mineral composition of each component was analyzed by electron microscopy. The metal minerals were mainly concentrated in the mineral components. Besides, the electron probe micro-analysis shows that the Pt content in the minerals of fly ash was significantly correlated with the metal contents of Ni and Cu. After the obtainment of the characteristics of fly ash metal enrichment, the heavy minerals with Cu, Ni, Pt, Pd, and other target metal elements were enriched by gravity separation and flotation. The enrichment coefficients of Cu, Ni, Pt, and Pd were 1.45, 1.33, 1.90 and 1.60, respectively, and the recovery rates were 77%, 81%, 97% and 88% respectively. Since the yield of heavy minerals obtained by separation was 62.24%, it indicated the physical separation method could significantly reduce the cost of leaching and recovering of fly ash metal resources.
