1. End of the World Boundaries for Chiral Quantum Gravity Theories

Abstract

We describe the construction of large classes of explicit string theory backgrounds corresponding to 6d and 4d chiral theories with end of the world boundaries, and describe the strong coupling phenomena involved in gapping the chiral (but non-anomalous) sets of fields, such as strongly coupled phase transitions or symmetric mass generation. One class of 6d constructions is closely related to chirality changing phase transitions, such as those turning heterotic NS5-branes into gauge instantons, in flat space or orbifold singularities. A class of 4d models exploits systems of IIB D3-branes at toric CY3 singularities with an extra $\mathbf{Z}_2$ involution related to $G_2$ holonomy manifolds in the mirror type IIA picture, which we explicitly describe in terms of dimer diagrams., Comment: 50 pages + appendices

Abstract

This paper analyses the set of scientific publications in open access, other than journals (monographs, conferences proceedings, teaching materials and grey literature), published by Spanish public universities, studying their volume, documentary typology, level of description and open access policies with the aim of measuring their degree of incorporation and compliance with the principles of Open Science. An exhaustive review of the disposed material in open access by these publishers has been carried out, which has allowed to make a diagnosis of their level of open access publishing. Grey literature is the most common documentary type followed by the monograph, in the open publication of these publishers that does not reach even 5% of the average editorial production. The results allow us to conclude that the academic publishing, and more specifically the academic books in open access, still has a very reduced presence within the editorial production of these institutions., Comment: 10 pages, in Spanish language, 3 figures, 4 tables

6. End-coupled random lasers: a basis for artificial neural networks

Abstract

Light interference in strongly disordered photonic media can generate lasers where random modes are amplified in unpredictable way. The ease of fabrication, along with their low coherence caused by multiple small-linewidth peaks, made random lasers (RL) emerging, efficient, speckle-free light sources and a means to achieve spectral super-resolution. With potential to become a mature and accessible technology, their complex system's nature furnishes endless opportunities to unveil fundamental physics, since they can act as elements of optical network architectures. To date no experimental studies have analyzed the optical interaction between independent resonators in networks of RLs. Realizing RLs with a pumped strip joining two rough mirrors, we experimentally investigate and numerically simulate the emergence of networks when, by sharing scattering centers, RLs become coupled. We prove that the emission of a single RL can be manipulated by the action of others in the network, giving rise to substantial peak rearrangements and energy redistribution, fingerprint of mode coupling. Our findings, involving a few coupled RLs, firmly set the basis for the study of full-grown photonic networks. Abstract

Banjarmasin is the capital city of South Kalimantan Province and has a low topography, and is traversed by the Barito River. In addition, Banjarmasin City is also a Java Sea route, so it has a high level of vulnerability to sea-level rise. During the rainy season, most of the Banjarmasin area, especially the riverside, is affected by flooding. Floods in Banjarmasin, not only in quality but also in quantity, have reached a very serious level when viewed from the magnitude of the impact caused by the flood. For flood disaster management in Banjarmasin City to be more integrative and effective, Urban Flood Disaster Risk Management is carried out. This study aims to identify hazards, assess community vulnerability to risks, develop preparedness and mitigation plans, implement plans, monitor, evaluate, revise and update plans (plans). This study presents a review of literature studies in Flood Risk Management by approaching it through a review of problem identification. The methodology used in developing a methodological map is used to analyze the results to find directions for further research. Based on the analysis, it can be concluded that the approach that can be taken is to tend to use a combination of literature and policy documents and be examined and refined through interviews with stakeholders, shareholders, and those involved in policymaking. Future research will support contributions in flood risk management for urban flooding. Banjarmasin merupakan ibu kota dari Provinsi Kalimantan Selatan dan memiliki topografi yang relatif rendah serta dilalui oleh sungai Barito. Selain itu, Kota Banjarmasin juga menjadi jalur laut Jawa, sehingga mempunyai tingkat kerentanan yang tinggi terhadap kenaikan muka air laut. Ketika musim hujan, sebagian besar wilayah Banjarmasin terutama di daerah pinggiran sungai terdampak banjir. Banjir di kota Banjarmasin tidak hanya secara kualitas tetapi juga secara kuantitas sudah mencapai level yang sangat serius jika dipandang dari besarnya dampak yang diakibatkan oleh banjir. Agar penanganan bencana banjir di Kota Banjarmasin lebih integratif dan efektif maka dilakukan Manajemen Risiko Bencana Banjir Perkotaan. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengidentifikasi risiko bahaya, melakukan penilaian kerentanan komunitas terhadap risiko, mengembangkan kesiapsiagaan dan rencana mitigasi, implementasi rencana, monitoring, evaluasi, revisi dan memperbarui rencana (plan). Penelitian awal ini menyajikan tinjauan studi literatur dalam studi Manajemen Risiko Banjir dengan melakukan pendekatan melalui tinjauan identifikasi masalah. Metodologi yang digunakan adalah pengembangan melalui peta metodologi yang digunakan untuk menganalisis hasil untuk menemukan arah penelitian selanjutnya. Berdasarkan analisis, dapat disimpulkan bahwa pendekatan yang bisa dilakukan adalah cenderung menggunakan metode kombinasi antara literature dan dokumen kebijakan dan diperiksa serta disempurnakan melalui wawancara dengan pemangku kepentingan, pemegang saham dan yang terlibat dalam pembuatan kebijakan. Penelitian masa mendatang seperti ini yang akan mendukung kontribusi dalam manajemen risiko banjir untuk banjir perkotaan.

15. Construction of EFL Teacher Educators' Knowledge Base in a Teacher Education Program in Nicaragua

Abstract

The purpose of this qualitative phenomenological study was to understand and describe the sources of Nicaraguan EFL teacher educators' knowledge base, the types of knowledge and skills that constructed their knowledge base, and the relationship of this knowledge base and classroom practices in a teacher education program at a Nicaraguan University. This study presents a literature review on the sources of knowledge and knowledge base of EFL teacher educators in the field of language teacher education. I used a purposeful sampling technique to select both the research site and the six EFL teacher educators who participated as research participants in this study. Data were collected from three sources: a curriculum analysis, six one-shot semi-structured interviews, and a document analysis to lesson plans, syllabi, and assessment instruments used by the research participants. To analyze the data collected, I used the qualitative data analysis model proposed by Miles, Huberman, and Saldana (2014). As a mode of findings, I describe the sources of knowledge, a categorization of knowledge base and skills that Nicaraguan EFL teacher educators possess as well as the relationship they identified between their knowledge base and their teaching practices in EFL teacher education classrooms. Findings revealed that Nicaraguan EFL teacher educators possess sixteen types of knowledge and fourteen types of skills that resulted from eight sources of knowledge, among which English proficiency, own experiences as language learners, subject knowledge, pedagogical knowledge, teaching experience in EFL teacher education programs, assessment knowledge of language student teachers, and knowledge of students' L1 seem to be the most important when it has to do with actual teaching in language teacher education classrooms. In addition, according to the findings, the process of becoming an EFL teacher educator may take many years. It begins with the professional coursework teacher educators take in their language teacher education programs where they first become English teachers. It continues with teaching experiences either in high schools, English teaching centers, or universities. Their professional knowledge as teacher educators is completed through the interaction with EFL preservice student teachers in teacher education classrooms, in which their previous pedagogical, linguistic, and teaching experiences as EFL teachers is transformed. In other words, their professional identity as EFL teacher educators is developed as they begin teaching in EFL teacher education programs. Pursuing this further, this study presents some pedagogical implications based on the findings that can help improve the quality and preparation of EFL teacher educators in Nicaragua. Finally, it offers some avenues for more research regarding the knowledge base of EFL teacher educators in Nicaraguan teacher education programs. Abstract

In his post on Empyre, Michael Angelo Tata coined the term, “eject.” Alluding to Walter Benjamin’s notion of an artifact generated from “the technological innovation of mechanical reproducibility,” Tata suggested that the e-ject “creates a culture industry by making culture maximally mobile, available to even the lowest social strata.” Questions raised in this statement focused on whether or not such an object is “genuine” to how one goes about “collecting” “commodif[ying], and discussing it.” This presentation extends that discussion by focusing on the ephemeral nature, genres, and criticism of electronic objects in a roundtable discussion led by members of the Electronic Literature Organization. Thus, the theorization of e-jects looks specifically at those objects that have a literary quality but that are not reproducible in print-based contexts.

Abstract

Abstract Although the ability of humic (HA) and fulvic acids (FA) to improve plant growth has been demonstrated, knowledge about the mechanisms responsible for the direct effects of HA and FA on the promotion of plant growth is scarce and fragmentary. Our study investigated the causal role of both root PM H+‐ATPase activity and ABA in the SHA‐promoting action on both root and shoot growth. The involvement of these processes in the regulation of shoot cytokinin concentration and activity was also studied. Our aim was to integrate such plant responses for providing new insights to the current model on the mode of action of HA for promoting root and shoot growth. Experiments employing specific inhibitors and using Cucumis sativus L. plants show that both the root PM H+‐ATPase activity and root ABA play a crucial role in the root growth‐promoting action of SHA. With regard to the HA‐promoting effects on shoot growth, two pathways of events triggered by the interaction of SHA with plant roots are essential for the increase in root PM H+‐ATPase activity—which also mediates an increase in cytokinin concentration and action in the shoot—and the ABA‐mediated increase in hydraulic conductivity (Lpr).

Abstract

—Tomato, which is scientifically known as Solanum lycopersicum, is a widely cultivated plant in the nightshade family, Solanaceae. It is an important source of food, both fresh and in processed form, and is grown in many parts of the world. However, tomato plants are prone to various diseases, which can significantly reduce their yield and quality. Early detection and prediction of these diseases can help in timely treatment and management which can ultimately lead to higher crop productivity. Machine learning techniques have shown promise in detecting and predicting plant diseases. This approach can be used to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of tomato cultivation and can have a significant impact on the agricultural industry. The use of machine learning algorithms can increase the efficiency of tomato cultivation. In this study, we present a machine learning-based approach for the detection and prediction of tomato leaf diseases. We use a dataset of images of tomato leaves infected with different diseases such as tomato yellow curl virus, bacterial spot, and late blight along with healthy leaves, to train a Random Forest model. The model is then tested on a separate dataset to evaluate its performance.&nbsp

32. Low-Dose Radioiodine Ablation in Patients with Low-Risk Differentiated Thyroid Cancer

Abstract

Aim:Based on the response criteria of the 2015 American Thyroid Associations guidelines, our objectives were to ­determine the response rate when using a low dose of ­131-I GBq in patients with low-risk differentiated thyroid cancer (LRDTC) and the influence of clinical and analytical variables on the prediction of complete response. Methods:We performed a multicentre and longitudinal study, including patients who were operated for LRDTC and who underwent radioiodine remnant ablation with a low-dose of 131-I. All patients were assessed at 6–12 months, and their status was classified as complete (excellent response) or incomplete response (structural incomplete, biochemical incomplete or indeterminate response). Various factors including age, gender, histology, tumour focality and size, stage, time from surgery to treatment, type of thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) stimulation, preablation serum thyroglobulin (pTg), antiTg antibodies (pAntiTgAb) and TSH (pTSH) levels were also analysed in order to predict the complete response rate. Results:Of 108 patients, 79.6% achieved complete response and the remaining showed incomplete response (2.9, 5.5 and 12% due to biochemical incomplete, structural incomplete and indeterminate response respectively). Six patients received a new dose of 131-I. Tumour size and pAntiTgAb were the only factors related to therapeutic response (p= 0.03 and p< 0.01, respectively). However, pAntiTgAb was the only independent factor related to complete ­response. Patients with complete response showed lower pTg than those with incomplete response (5.1 ± 12.9 vs. 11.2 ± 25 ng/mL) although without statistical significance (p = 0.14). There was no significant difference in the response rate depending on the thyrotropin stimulation methods. Conclusions:A low dose of 131-I was sufficient for reaching a complete response at 6–12 months of follow-up in the majority of patients with LRDTC. Tumour size and pAntiTgAb variables were related to therapeutic response.

33. Hardware-Efficient Digital Autotuning for Integrated Switched-Mode Battery Chargers

Abstract

Parameter variations and unpredictable operating environments heavily impact the control performance of battery chargers in mobile device applications. To address this challenge, a comprehensive and simple autotuning system has been developed. The autotuning algorithm presented in this work aims to maximize the crossover frequency of the control loop while maintaining stability margins. The key innovations behind this approach are the use of a single-tone injection, single-node measurement, and the decomposition of the response signal into in-phase and quadrature projections. This autotuning approach results in significant savings in computational hardware resources, as it requires virtually no memory and has a low number of signal processing components. The effectiveness of the algorithm has been experimentally verified on a field-programmable gate array (FPGA)-based controller and demonstrated on an integrated battery charger prototype. The proposed autotuning algorithm is only 73% larger than the standard proportional–integral control system and consumes just 3.2% resources of the FPGA chip (Cyclone V with 15 880 adaptive logic modules).

Abstract

Polyester polymer concretes can substitute conventional concretes based on their usually good mechanical strength, adequate physical properties, and high resistance against aggressive chemical environments. They also show a high potential for using recycled targets in their manufacturing. This paper analyzes the fresh and cured properties of polyester polymer concretes containing two metallurgical wastes, namely: ladle slag and alumina filler. Both targets require a higher resin dosage than sand. The standard consistency test showed a low representativeness of the recycled fresh mixes’ workability. The ladle slag and alumina filler samples showed a higher length plastic shrinkage than those containing sand. All of the targets obtained cured density values in the range of 1.589−1.912 g/cm3. From a mechanical point of view, the sand and alumina filler containing polyester polymer concretes reached 11.02 and 10.93 kN, respectively, of flexural strength, while the ladle slag samples showed the best result with 19.31 kN. In the compressive strength test, the sand and alumina filler combinations reached 106.16 and 104.21 MPa, respectively, while the ladle slag achieved 160.48 MPa. The flexural and compressive elasticity modulus showed similar trends related to the resin content.
