In the Mediterranean region, some areas of the Vesuvius National Park (southern Italy) are subjected to a severe anthropogenic impact, especially during spring and summer seasons. The continuous trampling of tourists and buses leads to the formation of “dust-clouds”, exposing plants, especially along the paths, to a great deposition of powder particles on leaves. The aim of this study was to analyze if the dust deposition induces changes in leaf morpho-anatomical and eco-physiological traits of the alien, invasive, species Robinia pseudoacacia L., with particular attention to the photosystem II (PSII) efficiency. We selected plants located near the paths with a high deposition of dust (HD) and plants far away from the paths (low deposition, LD), and tested them over three dates along summer. We analyzed PSII photochemistry, photosynthetic pigments content, and leaf functional (e.g., relative water content and leaf dry matter content) and morpho-anatomical traits (e.g., parenchyma thickness, mesophyll density). HD plants presented a more efficient PSII activity, indicated by the higher quantum yield of PSII electron transport (FPSII) (9%) and electron transport rate (ETR) (38%) in the end of July. Dust deposition also reversibly altered photosynthetic pigments concentration and some lamina traits, adjustable in the short-term (e.g., intercellular spaces and phenolics distribution). We hypothesize that HD leaves were shielded by dusts which would protect their photosynthetic apparatus from the excess of light.

Dendrochronology, the science of dating tree rings in the wood, defines in which calendar year a particular tree ring was formed. The method can be used to determine the age and authentication of wooden musical instruments. We present a protocol describing how to perform a dendrochronological analysis on stringed instruments and how to interpret the dating. The protocol describes the basic steps in the analysis of top plates, which are usually made of Norway spruce (Picea abies) or, more rarely, silver fir (Abies alba). First, the top plate is carefully inspected, and then the tree ring widths are measured directly on the instrument using high-resolution images. After completing the measurements, a tree ring sequence of the instrument is created, and, in the next step, dating is performed with a number of reference chronologies of the tree species from different geographical areas and instruments. The specialists who date the instruments also invest work in creating reference chronologies. The dendrochronological report provides the dating of an instrument as a calendar year (end date), indicating the year in which the last (most recent) tree ring on the top plate was formed when the tree was still alive. The end date represents the terminus post quem, the year after which the instrument was made or before which it could not have been made. To estimate the year of manufacture, one must consider the time required for wood drying and storing and the number of tree rings removed during wood processing. This protocol is intended to help those commissioning such an analysis to better understand how the analysis is performed and how to interpret the dendrochronological reports in terms of the age, origin, maker, and authenticity of the instrument.

Wood in outdoor applications is exposed to abiotic and biotic factors. If we want to slow down the decay, the wood must be protected. In the past, biocidal products based on copper, chromium, and boron compounds (CCB) were one of the most important solutions for wood protection under extreme conditions. Although CCB is in practice no longer used in the EU, it can serve as a reference for the evaluation of new biocidal products. At the field test site of the Department of Wood Science and Technology, Biotechnical Faculty, an experiment has been carried out under real conditions for 14 years, in which impregnated samples are exposed to the weather according to a double-layer test. In the case of treated wood, we often find that the wood decays faster than expected. In this work we want to determine what contributes to decay based on the analysis of decayed impregnated wood from the field test site. The results show that sufficient retention and penetration of the active substances into the wood ensures the planned service life.

Les na prostem je izpostavljen delovanju abiotskih in biotskih dejavnikov. Če hočemo njihovo delovanje upočasniti, moramo les zaščititi. V preteklosti je bil biocidni proizvod na osnovi bakrovih, kromovih in borovih spojin (CCB) ena najpomembnejših rešitev za zaščito lesa v ostrih pogojih izpostavitve. Kljub temu, da se CCB v EU praktično ne uporablja več, lahko služi kot referenca za vrednotenje novih biocidnih proizvodov. Na terenskem polju Oddelka za lesarstvo Biotehniške fakultete že 14 let poteka poskus v realnih pogojih, kjer so impregnirani vzorci izpostavljeni vremenskim vplivom v skladu z dvoslojnim testom. Pri zaščitenem lesu pogosto opažamo, da les propade hitreje kot je pričakovano. V okviru tega prispevka želimo na podlagi analize razkrojenega s CCB impregniranega lesa s terenskega polja Oddelka za lesarstvo ugotoviti, zakaj je prišlo do prezgodnjega razkroja. Rezultati kažejo, da ustrezno življenjsko dobo zagotavljata ustrezna retencija in penetracija aktivnih učinkovin v les.

Wood identification of barbecue charcoal from commercial packages of three retailers (B1, B2, B3) in Slovenia and Croatia was performed with help of Confocal Laser Scanning Microscopy (CLSM). CLSM enabled us to image key identification features of charcoal wood that were compared with light micrographs of wood from the reference collection. Product B1 contained charcoal made exclusively of beech wood (Fagus sylvatica) and the declaration indicated the address of the producer, in Serbia which allowed traceability of the wood. The selection of wood species in product B2, consisted of red oak (Quercus cerris or Q. rubra), black locust (Robinia pseudoacacia), and cherry (Prunus avium), which could originate from Serbia, and it did not contain tropical wood as stated on the package. Product B3 contained wood from at least four (sub)topical species which could not be exactly identified to species/genus level. The declaration on the product did not allow traceability of wood. As the risks of illegal logging are high for wood of (sub)tropical origin, our results support the initiative that the monitoring of the charcoal trade should be covered by the EUTR - European Timber Regulations.

Forests are under great pressure due to climate changes. It is forecast that the importance of Mediterranean type forests will significantly increase. Among various types of oak species, pubescent oak (Quercus pubescens) will likely gain ecological and economic importance in the region south of Alps. Although this wood species is well known, there are not much data available about chemical properties and durability. A comprehensive analysis of extractives and durability against wood decay fungi was therefore performed. The results of the chemical analysis revealed that heartwood contains up to 20% of the extractives, with considerable amounts of phenols, including a fairly high concentration of Gallic acid (GAc). Anatomical structure, with high frequency of tylosis, resulted in good water exclusion efficacy. The presence of biologically active extractives and superior water exclusion efficacy resulted in good durability, as shown by basidiomycetes tests. Based on the laboratory data, factors that determine the service life of wood were calculated. Data indicate superior performance in above-ground applications.

We present xylem formation in Norway spruce (Picea abies (L.) Karst.) in 2015 at Panška reka, near Ljubljana, Slovenia (ca. 46°00'N, 14°40'E, 400 m a.s.l.) with a temperate climate. The research was a part of a long-term project, which involves different sites and tree species. We measured the widths of cambium and the formation of xylem growth rings with differentiating cells in postcambial (PC) and secondary wall formation (SW) phases, and mature cells (MT). The results for 2015 were compared with those for previous years (2009%2011) in the same species and site, and with the published data from wood formation studies in conifers from all over Europe. The latter were used in two-factor regression models which confirmed the effects of latitude and altitude on the critical dates of onset, end, and duration of xylem production. The models thus helped us to predict/reconstruct phenology of wood formation in conifers in Europe Študija prikazuje nastajanje lesa smreke (Picea abies (L.) Karst.) v rastni sezoni 2015 na rastišču Panška reka v bližini Ljubljane (pribl. 46°00'N, 14°40'E, 400 m n.v.). Raziskava je del večletnega projekta spremljanja nastajanja lesa več drevesnih vrst na različnih rastiščih. V okviru raziskave smo spremljali širino kambijeve cone ter nastajajoče branike lesa, kjer smo ločili celice v fazah postkambialne rasti (PC) in nastajanja sekundarne celične stene (SW) ter zrele (MT) celice. Rezultate smo primerjali z ugotovitvami študije, opravljene na smreki z istega rastišča v rastnih sezonah 2009%2011 ter s podatki, objavljenimi za več vrst iglavcev z različnih rastišč po Evropi. Primerjave smo uporabili za izdelavo regresijskih modelov z dvema neodvisnima spremenljivkama. Modeli so potrdili vpliv zemljepisne širine in nadmorske višine na kritične datume začetka in konca ter na trajanje nastajanja lesa. Research Highlights: The antifungal assay confirmed that knotwood extractives of Scots pine inhibit the growth of wood decay fungi. Heartwood extracts of black locust were found to be much stronger free radical scavengers than the extracts of Scots pine. The extracts were deposited in the lumina and on the wall surface of cells in the impregnated sapwood. Impregnation of the sapwood blocks with Scots pine and black locust extracts reduced the fungal decay of wood. Objectives: Hydrophilic extracts of Scots pine knotwood and black locust heartwood were chemically analyzed, tested for antifungal and antioxidant properties and used for impregnation of beech and Scots pine sapwood. Materials and Methods: Scots pine knotwood and black locust heartwood were extracted, and obtained hydrophilic extractives were chemically analyzed. Extracts were analyzed for antifungal properties with the in vitro well-diffusion method. The free radical scavenging activity of wood extracts was measured colorimetrically. The retention of the extracts in the impregnated sapwood blocks was evaluated with microscopy and gravimetry. A decay test was performed with the mini block test. Results: Almost half of both Scots pine knotwood and black locust heartwood hydrophilic extracts obtained were described by phenolic compounds. The extracts were deposited in the lumina of cells and on the cell wall surface. Extractives of Scots pine knotwood had good inhibitory properties against white- and brown-rot fungi. On the other hand, extractives of black locust heartwood were found to be good radical scavengers, better than knotwood extractives of Scots pine. The extracts of Scots pine knotwood and black locust reduced the fungal decay of the tested sapwood blocks. Conclusions: The results of this research show that the less-valued knotwood of Scots pine and heartwood of black locust are a potential source of antifungal and antioxidant agents for bio-based wood preservatives.

The final purpose is to clarify how Posthumanism, when adopting a feminist and a gender sensitive perspective, diverges by transhumanism for its understanding of bodies and matter, its approach to science, its objectives.

Since invasive alien species are one of the main causes of biodiversity loss in the region and thus of changes in ecosystem services, it is important to find the best possible solution for their removal from nature and the best practice for their usability. The aim of the study was to investigate their properties as components of wood-plastic composites and to investigate the properties of the wood-plastic composites produced. The overall objective was to test the potential of available alien plant species as raw material for the manufacture of products. This would contribute to sustainability and give them a better chance of ending their life cycle. One of the possible solutions on a large scale is to use alien wood species for the production of wood plastic composites (WPC). Five invasive alien hardwood species have been used in combination with polyethylene powder (PE) and maleic anhydride grafted polyethylene (MAPE) to produce various flat pressed WPC boards. Microstructural analyses (confocal laser scanning microscopy and scanning electron microscopy) and mechanical tests (flexural strength, tensile strength) were performed. Furthermore, measurements of density, thickness swelling, water absorption and dimensional stability during heating and cooling were carried out. Comparisons were made between the properties of six WPC boards (five alien wood species and mixed boards). The results showed that the differences between different invasive alien wood species were less obvious in mechanical properties, while the differences in sorption properties and dimensional stability were more significant. The analyses of the WPC structure showed a good penetration of the polymer into the lumens of the wood cells and a fine internal structure without voids. These are crucial conditions to obtain a good, mechanically strong and water-resistant material.

Microwave modification can increase the permeability of wood by delaminating and rupturing its anatomical microstructures at their weak points. A high degree of intensity of microwave modification can cause significant structural damage to the microstructures of wood, resulting in poorer strength properties. The objective of this study was to evaluate the changes in the anatomical structure of Norway spruce (Picea abies (L.) Karst.) heartwood and sapwood after microwave modification in order to develop the most effective treatment in terms of applied energy without causing significant structural damage. Analysis with light and scanning electron microscopy were performed to evaluate the effect of microwave treatment for two different energy intensities, moderate and high intensity. The results indicated structural changes in the tracheid cells. Microscopy showed varying degrees of modification within the wood microstructure, with the heartwood samples showing a greater anatomical distortion compared to their sapwood counterparts. Furthermore, the samples were subjected to pycnometric density measurements, which indicated a reduction in skeletal and absolute density after microwave modification, for both high and moderate intensity treatment on sapwood and heartwood samples. With increasing microwave energy, a gradual increase in specific pore volume and porosity percentage of the samples were also detected.

Quercus ilex L. dieback has been recently reported at numerous Mediterranean sites. Wood and phloem formation dynamics and tree-ring series of anatomical traits can be used to evaluate growth conditions of trees. We monitored cambial activity in Q. ilex trees growing at a site in southern Italy in order to assess how xylem and phloem production are affected by harsh seasonal climatic variation during a dry year. We followed xylogenesis by counting the number of cambial cells and detecting the occurrence of post-cambial cells throughout the year. As phloem did not show clear growth rings and boundaries between them, we followed the development of phloem fibres—their morphological traits during development and the distance from the cambium served as a reference point to evaluate the phloem production during the year. We detected a multimodal pattern in cambial activity, with wood production in three periods of the year and consequent formation of intra-annual density fluctuations (IADFs). The lowest production of xylem cells was observed in the dry late spring and summer period (likely due to the low water availability), while the highest occurred in autumn (the wettest period). Although we could not differentiate between early and late phloem, the analysis of phloem traits was useful to follow the dynamics of phloem production, which is generally difficult in Mediterranean tree species. We found cambial production of phloem throughout the year, even in the periods without xylem production. The results showed that if tree growth was constrained by environmental limitations, the ratio between xylem to phloem cells decreased and, in the most severely affected trees, more cells were formed preferentially in the phloem compared to xylem. We also briefly report the way in which to solve technical problems with tissue preparation due to extreme hardness and to the peculiar structure of Q. ilex wood and outer bark.

Identifikacijo lesa oglja iz treh trgovin v Sloveniji in na Hrvaškem smo opravili s pomočjo konfokalne laserske vrstične mikroskopije (CLSM). Predstavili smo slike in opise ključnih znakov za identifikacijo lesa oglja in lesa iz referenčne zbirke. Izdelek B1 je vseboval oglje iz lesa bukve (Fagus sylvatica) in deklaracijo z natančnim naslovom proizvajalca iz Srbije, ki omogoča sledenje izvora lesa. Izdelek B2 je vseboval oglje iz lesa enega od rdečih hrastov (Q. cerrisali Q. rubra), robinije (Robinia pseudoacacia) in češnje (Prunus avium). To potrjuje, da pošiljka ne vsebuje tropskega lesa, kot je navedeno na deklaraciji in da verjetno prihaja iz Srbije. Izdelek B3 je vseboval les iz vsaj štirih (sub)tropskih lesnih vrst, ki jih ni bilo mogoče natančno določiti. Ker so tropske vrste za oglje pogosto nezakonito posekane, se pridružujemo pobudi, da bi v Evropi nadzor trgovine z ogljem morali vključiti v Uredbo EU o lesu - EUTR

Temporal variability of leaf senescence (autumn phenology) was observed in 2020 in 11 European beech (Fagus sylvatica) trees in Tivoli, Rožnik and Šišenski hrib Landscape Park in Ljubljana, Slovenia, previously this year observed also for spring phenology. General leaf colouring (LC) BBCH94 occurred, between 19 and 24 October 2020, with lower inter-individual variability than that of leaf unfolding (LU), BBCH11. The trees had active leaves (LC-LU) between 177 and 199 days. In only 3 trees total leaf fall (LF), BBCH97, occurred before 19 November 2020. LC of the tree included in the long-term monitoring program of the Slovenian Environment Agency ARSO occurred on 24 October 2020. This is 7 days later than 65-year average of the same tree/location and is ascribed to weather conditions. Investigation of tree tissues showed that the width of the last formed tree-ring in the wood varied between 0.39 and 9.61 mm and in phloem between 0.09 and 0.26 mm and that the tissues reflect health condition of the trees. V letu 2020 smo spremljali jesensko fenologijo listov 11 dreves evropske bukve (Fagus sylvatica) v Krajinskem parku Tivoli, Rožnik in Šišenski hrib v Ljubljani, Slovenija. Pri istih drevesih smo spomladi spremljali proces olistanja. Splošno obarvanje listov (LC), BBCH94, je nastopilo med 19. in 24. oktobrom 2020, v ožjem časovnem intervalu kot spomladansko olistanje (LU), BBCH11. Drevesa so imela aktivne liste (LC-LU) od 177 do 199 dni. Samo s 3 dreves je do 19. novembra 2020 odpadlo vse listje (LF), BBCH97. Pri drevesu, ki je vključeno v dolgoletni program spremljanja fenologije listov Agencije Republike Slovenije za okolje ARSO, je obarvanje listov nastopilo 24. oktobra 2020, kar je za 7 dni kasneje od 65-letnega povprečja za isto drevo / lokacijo. Raziskave drevesnih tkiv so pokazale, da je znašala širina zadnje branike v lesu med 0,39 in 9,61 mm in v floemu med 0,09 in 0,26 mm in da tkiva nakazujejo zdravstveno stanje dreves.

Mediterranean trees and shrubs form intra-annual density fluctuations (IADFs) in tree rings as a sign of their plasticity in wood formation in response to intraseasonal variations of environmental conditions. Different species show a different aptitude to form IADFs, due to their diverse ability to cope with climate stressors, since the occurrence of IADFs may affect plant hydraulics. Dendroecology and quantitative wood anatomy were used to characterise IADFs in Pinus pinea and Arbutus unedo co-occurring at a Mediterranean site in Italy. The relations between climate parameters (i.e. temperature and precipitation) and intra-annual tree-ring traits (i. e. IADF frequency and conduit size) were analysed to highlight the main triggers for IADF formation and their functional role.Data showed that both species are characterised by a high plastic response to climate and formed a high frequency of L-IADFs (occurrence of earlywoodlike conduits in latewood). The two species, although forming the same type of IADFs, showed different sensitivity to environmental factors. Pinus pinea showed a high dependence of tracheid size on temperature, while Arbutus unedo was more sensitive to precipitation in spring and autumn. Arbutus unedo promptly developed more than one IADF per year in response to rainfall events following drought periods.The overall results were useful to compare the aptitude of the two species in forming IADFs and to highlight the factors priming their formation. This is useful to understand wood growth reactions to environmental drivers and to evaluate the adaptive capabilities in these two species, and thus to predict forest reactions after climate changes.

Survival of forest tree species in semi-arid environments such as the Mediterranean area is threatened by the increase in harsh drought conditions. Therefore, better knowledge of the eco-physiology of Mediterranean species and their growth responses to climatic factors is needed to develop strategies for sustainable management.The studies of cambial activity and wood formation can provide information on tree growth and physiological responses to variations in intra-annual climatic parameters, helping to answer questions related to tree performance and plasticity under changing environmental conditions.Our aim was to investigate cambium production in holm oak (Quercus ilex L.) as one of the most widespread evergreen oaks in Southern Italy. We studied the response of cambium activity throughout the particularly dry year 2017. We collected tissues from tree stems every two weeks by sampling microcores containing phloem, cambium and xylem. For the analyses, thin cross sections of the microcores were analysed under a light microscope to identify the timing of cambial production, xylogenesis and phloem formation. We detected the period in which the cambium was active, as well as the period in which the cambium was not productive. We interpreted the cambial response to climatic conditions at the site during the period of observation.The observed pattern of xylogenesis differed from the expected bi-modal pattern typical for Mediterranean species which usually results in Intra-annual Density Fluctuations (IADFs) in tree-rings. In Q. ilex we observed only one peak of cambial activity, likely due to the low water availability during the year 2017.The obtained results provide useful information supporting the forecasting of the wood-growth responses to expected climate change. Moreover, we gained technical experience on optimal preparation of thin sections of problematic tissues, which is especially challenging in Q.ilex due to high hardness of the peculiar wood structure making the investigations of xylogenesis very challenging in this species.

A local tree-ring chronology of sessile oak (Qercus petraea) was constructed for the site Klanec pri Kozini (KLA), Slovenia (45.59° N, 13.92° E, 450 m a.s.l.) located on the Karst edge on the transition from the sub-Mediterranean climatic to temperate Continental zones. The chronology is 93 years long and covers the period 1925–2017. A comparison with four local oak chronologies from Slovenia and 38 from the surrounding countries (distance 65–220 km) showed that KLA agreed best with the local oak chronology of Rožnik, Ljubljana (ROZ), and two other oak chronologies from central Slovenia (the surroundings of Novo mesto and Ljubljana), one from Croatia and one from Austria. Dendroclimatological analysis showed that the main factor affecting tree-ring variation is June temperature (negative effect) and March precipitation (positive effect), which to a great extent explain the relation to other chronologies. The negative effect of June (maximal) temperature has become increasingly significant in the last few decades, which can be ascribed to warming related to ongoing climatic change.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Mediterranean trees have patterns of cambial activity with one or more pauses per year, leading to intra-annual density fluctuations (IADFs) in tree rings. We analysed xylogenesis (January 2015–January 2016) in Pinus pinea L. and Arbutus unedo L., co-occurring at a site on Mt. Vesuvius (southern Italy), to identify the cambial productivity and timing of IADF formation. METHODS: Dendrochronological methods and quantitative wood anatomy were applied and enabled IADF identification and classification. KEY RESULTS: We showed that cambium in P. pinea was productive throughout the calendar year. From January to March 2015, post-cambial (enlarging) earlywood-like tracheids were observed, which were similar to transition tracheids. The beginning of the tree ring was therefore not marked by a sharp boundary between latewood of the previous year and the new xylem produced. True earlywood tracheids were formed in April. L-IADFs were formed in autumn, with earlywood-like cells in latewood. In A. unedo, a double pause in cell production was observed, in summer and winter, leading to L-IADFs in autumn as well. Moreover, the formation of more than one IADF was observed in A. unedo. CONCLUSIONS: Despite having completely different wood formation models and different life strategies, the production of earlywood, latewood and IADF cells was strongly controlled by climatic factors in the two species. Such cambial production patterns need to be taken into account in dendroecological studies to interpret climatic signals in wood from Mediterranean trees.

Research was done to develop the optimal method of wood surface preparation for scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Since 2018, environmental scanning electron microscope (ESEM™) FEI Quanta 250 has been installed at the Department of Wood Science and Technology in Ljubljana. We tested several methods for the pre-preparation and cutting of wood surfaces for SEM analyses. The samples had been either dried, soaked in water and frozen, impregnated with paraffin or simply moistened before cutting. We analysed wood surfaces obtained by splitting, sawing, planing, sanding and cutting on a sliding microtome with different blades. The effect of gold coating on the SEM image quality was also evaluated. Best results were obtained by cutting a pre-moistened surface on a sliding microtome with a low profile replaceable blade and gold coated afterwards. Determined methodology is technically less demanding, not time consuming and obtains results that satisfy needs for wood anatomy research at magnifications up to 12.000x. Guidelines for the optimal preparation of samples were prepared, and theoretical and practical basis for investigations of wood anatomy using SEM were provided. The method was afterwards used in analyses of invasive alien plant species – investigating their anatomical structure in the framework of the AlienPLAntSpEcies - APPLAUSE project (Urban Innovative Actions initiative). It was demonstrated that the use of the SEM opened new scope in detailed investigations of the wood structure and properties., Istraživanje je provedeno kako bi se razvila optimalna metoda pripreme drvne površine za pretražnu elektronsku mikroskopiju (SEM). Od 2018. na Odsjeku za znanost i tehnologiju o drvu u Ljubljani instaliran je uređaj za pretražnu elektronsku mikroskopiju u uvjetima okoliša (ESEMTM) FEI Quanta 250. Proučavali smo nekoliko metoda za pripremu i rezanje površine drva za SEM analizu. Uzorci su sušeni, potapani u vodi i smrzavani te prije rezanja impregnirani parafi nom ili samo navlaženi. Analizirali smo površine drva dobivene cijepanjem, piljenjem, blanjanjem, brušenjem i rezanjem na mikrotomu različitim oštricama. Također je proučavan utjecaj zlatnog premaza na kvalitetu SEM fotografi ja. Najbolji rezultati dobiveni su rezanjem prethodno navlažene površine na mikrotomu, i to zamjenjivim noževima niskog profi la, nakon čega je površina drva pozlaćena. Primijenjena je metodologija tehnički manje zahtjevna, ne oduzima mnogo vremena, a dobiveni rezultati zadovoljavaju potrebe istraživanja anatomije drva pri povećanju i do 12 000 puta. Sastavljene su smjernice za optimalnu pripremu uzoraka te je postavljena teorijska i praktična osnova za istraživanje anatomije drva primjenom SEM-a. Metoda je potom primijenjena za istraživanje invazivnih biljnih vrsta – za ispitivanje njihove anatomske strukture u sklopu projekta AlienPLAntSpEcies – APPLAUSE (Urban Innovative Actions). Potvrđeno je da je upotreba SEM-a otvorila novo područje u detaljnim istraživanjima strukture i svojstava drva.

Fluctuations in climatic conditions during the growing season are recorded in Mediterranean tree-rings and often result in intra-annual density fluctuations (IADFs). Dendroecology and quantitative wood anatomy analyses were used to characterize the relations between the variability of IADF traits and climatic drivers in Pinus pinaster Aiton and Quercus ilex L. growing at sites with different water availability on the Elba island in Central Italy. Our results showed that both species present high xylem plasticity resulting in the formation of L-type IADFs (L-IADFs), consisting of earlywood-like cells in latewood. The occurrence of such IADFs was linked to rain events following periods of summer drought. The formation of L-IADFs in both species increased the hydraulic conductivity late in the growing season, due to their larger lumen area in comparison to &ldquo, true latewood&rdquo, The two species expressed greater similarity under arid conditions, as unfavorable climates constrained trait variation. Wood density, measured as the percentage of cell walls over total xylem area, IADF frequency, as well as conduit lumen area and vessel frequency, specifically in the hardwood species, proved to be efficient proxies to encode climate signals recorded in the xylem. The response of these anatomical traits to climatic variations was found to be species- and site-specific.

In Mediterranean ecosystems, some natural areas are exposed to severe anthropogenic impact. Especially in summer, the considerable number of tourists visiting such areas, often with vehicles, causes deposition of dust over the vegetation due to formation of powder clouds, also favoured by wind erosion, high temperature, low precipitation and incoherent soil structure. The main aim of this study was to analyse whether the deposition of dust can induce changes in leaf anatomical functional traits and in the efficiency of photosynthetic apparatus in Centranthus ruber, a species widespread in Mediterranean ecosystems. Leaf morpho-functional traits were quantified in plants growing at sites characterised by high (HD) and low (LD) dust deposition, in periods with high anthropogenic impact. Analyses included quantification of chlorophyll fluorescence emission parameters, photosynthetic pigment concentration as well as stomatal size and frequency, leaf lamina thickness, quantification of intercellular spaces and phenolics in the mesophyll through microscopy. The overall analysis suggested that the different conditions of dust deposition induced different adjustment of morpho-functional traits in leaves of C. ruber. High dust deposition shielded the leaf lamina, protecting the photosynthetic apparatus from excess light and favoured plant photochemical efficiency. Leaves exposed to low dust deposition showed higher accumulation of phenolic compounds, protecting chloroplast membranes and characterised by high thermal dissipation of excess light. Such adaptive phenomena can affect vegetation dynamics due to possible different species-specific plant responses, resulting in different plant competitiveness under the limiting conditions of Mediterranean environments.

Determining the effect of a changing climate on tree growth will ultimately depend on our understanding of wood formation processes and how they can be affected by environmental conditions. In this context, monitoring intra-annual radial growth with high temporal resolution through point dendrometers has often been used. Another widespread approach is the microcoring method to follow xylem and phloem formation at the cellular level. Although both register the same biological process (secondary growth), given the limitations of each method, each delivers specific insights that can be combined to obtain a better picture of the process as a whole. To explore the potential of visualizing combined dendrometer and histological monitoring data and scrutinize intra-annual growth data on both dimensions (dendrometer → continuous; microcoring → discrete), we developed DevX (Dendrometer versus Xylogenesis), a visualization application using the “Shiny” package in the R programming language. The interactive visualization allows the display of dendrometer curves and the overlay of commonly used growth model fits (Gompertz and Weibull) as well as the calculation of wood phenology estimates based on these fits (growth onset, growth cessation and duration). Furthermore, the growth curves have interactive points to show the corresponding histological section, where the amount and development stage of the tissues at that particular time point can be observed. This allows to see the agreement of dendrometer derived phenology and the development status at the cellular level, and by this help disentangle shrinkage and swelling due to water uptake from actual radial growth. We present a case study with monitoring data for Acer pseudoplatanus L., Fagus sylvatica L. and Quercus robur L. trees growing in a mixed stand in northeastern Germany. The presented application is an example of the innovative and easy to access use of programming languages as basis for data visualization, and can be further used as a learning tool in the topic of wood formation and its ecology. Combining continuous dendrometer data with the discrete information from histological-sections provides a tool to identify active periods of wood formation from dendrometer series (calibrate) and explore monitoring datasets.
