1. High velocity solid dust impacts on tiles of tokamak-relevant temperature

Abstract

Runaway electron incidence on plasma facing components triggers explosive events that are accompanied by the expulsion of fast solid debris. Subsequent dust-wall high speed impacts constitute a mechanism of wall damage and dust destruction. Empirical damage laws that can be employed for erosion estimates are based on room-temperature impact experiments. We use light-gas gun shooting systems to accelerate solid tungsten dust to near-supersonic speeds towards bulk tungsten targets that are maintained at different temperatures. This concerns targets cooled down to $-100^{\circ}$C with liquid nitrogen and targets resistively heated up to $400^{\circ}$C. Post-mortem surface analysis reveals that the three erosion regimes (plastic deformation, bonding, partial disintegration) weakly depend on the target temperature within the investigated range. 2. Validity and Reliability of Concept Inventory Test in Human Physiology

Abstract

Biology education plays a vital role in nurturing the understanding of learners about the intricacy of life. Various efforts have emerged to strengthen learning biological concepts but there were still studies that showed that learners have low mastery in some aspects. To determine how well students understood various biological topics, including human physiology, Concept inventory tests (CIT) were used. The concept inventory test may be able to spot students' misconceptions and ultimately lead to improved comprehension. The crafted CIT developed with the aid of a table of specifications based on Bloom's taxonomy of cognitive domain was assessed according to its validity and reliability. In validation, content validity and item analysis were considered while reliability test was employed through Cronbach's alpha. Distractor analysis was also performed to determine possible source of misconception per item. The CIT was administered to 120 senior high school STEM students (50.8% from the private schools, 37.5% in regular public schools and 11.7% from public schools with special programs in science). The results displayed high content validity with a mean of 4.83 for content validity and an average Aiken's validity coefficient of 0.98. It also highlighted that the test is moderately difficult with the test difficulty of 0.58, as well as, discriminatory with a discriminating level of 0.46. After item classification, 63 items were retained (39 accepted, 24 for revisions) and Chronbach's alpha ([alpha]=0.74) indicated good internal consistency. The concept inventory test propounds to be a good classroom test science with minor items to be revised.

3. The Finiteness Problem for Automaton Semigroups of Extended Bounded Activity

Abstract

We extend the notion of activity for automaton semigroups and monoids introduced by Bartholdi, Godin, Klimann and Picantin to a more general setting. Their activity notion was already a generalization of Sidki's activity hierarchy for automaton groups. Using the concept of expandability introduced earlier by the current authors, we show that the language of $\omega$-words with infinite orbits is effectively a deterministic B\"uchi language for our extended activity. This generalizes a similar previous result on automaton groups by Bondarenko and the third author. By a result of Francoeur and the current authors, the description via a B\"uchi automaton immediately yields that the finiteness problem for complete automaton semigroups and monoids of bounded activity is decidable. In fact, we obtain a stronger result where we may consider sub-orbits under the action of a regular, suffix-closed language over the generators. This, in particular, also yields that it is decidable whether a finitely generated subsemigroup (or -monoid) of a bounded complete automaton semigroup is finite.

Abstract

PLATO (PLAnetary Transits and Oscillations of stars) is ESA's M3 mission designed to detect and characterise extrasolar planets and perform asteroseismic monitoring of a large number of stars. PLATO will detect small planets (down to <2 R_(Earth)) around bright stars (<11 mag), including terrestrial planets in the habitable zone of solar-like stars. With the complement of radial velocity observations from the ground, planets will be characterised for their radius, mass, and age with high accuracy (5 %, 10 %, 10 % for an Earth-Sun combination respectively). PLATO will provide us with a large-scale catalogue of well-characterised small planets up to intermediate orbital periods, relevant for a meaningful comparison to planet formation theories and to better understand planet evolution. It will make possible comparative exoplanetology to place our Solar System planets in a broader context. In parallel, PLATO will study (host) stars using asteroseismology, allowing us to determine the stellar properties with high accuracy, substantially enhancing our knowledge of stellar structure and evolution. The payload instrument consists of 26 cameras with 12cm aperture each. For at least four years, the mission will perform high-precision photometric measurements. Here we review the science objectives, present PLATO's target samples and fields, provide an overview of expected core science performance as well as a description of the instrument and the mission profile at the beginning of the serial production of the flight cameras. PLATO is scheduled for a launch date end 2026. This overview therefore provides a summary of the mission to the community in preparation of the upcoming operational phases.

Abstract

With the increasing prevalence of security incidents, the adoption of deception-based defense strategies has become pivotal in cyber security. This work addresses the challenge of scalability in designing honeytokens, a key component of such defense mechanisms. The manual creation of honeytokens is a tedious task. Although automated generators exists, they often lack versatility, being specialized for specific types of honeytokens, and heavily rely on suitable training datasets. To overcome these limitations, this work systematically investigates the approach of utilizing Large Language Models (LLMs) to create a variety of honeytokens. Out of the seven different honeytoken types created in this work, such as configuration files, databases, and log files, two were used to evaluate the optimal prompt. The generation of robots.txt files and honeywords was used to systematically test 210 different prompt structures, based on 16 prompt building blocks. Furthermore, all honeytokens were tested across different state-of-the-art LLMs to assess the varying performance of different models. Prompts performing optimally on one LLMs do not necessarily generalize well to another. Honeywords generated by GPT-3.5 were found to be less distinguishable from real passwords compared to previous methods of automated honeyword generation. Overall, the findings of this work demonstrate that generic LLMs are capable of creating a wide array of honeytokens using the presented prompt structures., Comment: 12 pages

6. Quantum Information reveals that orbital-wise correlation is essentially classical in Natural Orbitals

Abstract

The intersection of Quantum Chemistry and Quantum Computing has led to significant advancements in understanding the potential of using quantum devices for the efficient calculation of molecular energies. Simultaneously, this intersection is enhancing the comprehension of quantum chemical properties through the use of quantum computing and quantum information tools. This paper tackles a key question in this relationship: Is the nature of the orbital-wise electron correlations in wavefunctions of realistic prototypical cases classical or quantum? We delve into this inquiry with a comprehensive examination of molecular wavefunctions using Shannon and von Neumann entropies, alongside classical and quantum information theory. Our analysis reveals a notable distinction between classical and quantum mutual information in molecular systems when analyzed with Hartree-Fock canonical orbitals. However, this difference decreases dramatically, by approximately 100-fold, when Natural Orbitals are used as reference. This finding suggests that wavefunction correlations, when viewed through the appropriate orbital basis, are predominantly classical. This insight indicates that computational tasks in quantum chemistry could be significantly simplified by employing Natural Orbitals. Consequently, our study underscores the importance of using Natural Orbitals to accurately assess molecular wavefunction correlations and to avoid their overestimation. In summary, our results suggest a promising path for computational simplification in quantum chemistry, advocating for the wider adoption of Natural Orbitals and raising questions about the actual computational complexity of the multi-body problem in quantum chemistry.

Abstract

Gravitational waves from black-hole merging events have revealed a population of extra-galactic BHs residing in short-period binaries with masses that are higher than expected based on most stellar evolution models - and also higher than known stellar-origin black holes in our Galaxy. It has been proposed that those high-mass BHs are the remnants of massive metal-poor stars. Gaia astrometry is expected to uncover many Galactic wide-binary systems containing dormant BHs, which may not have been detected before. The study of this population will provide new information on the BH-mass distribution in binaries and shed light on their formation mechanisms and progenitors. As part of the validation efforts in preparation for the fourth Gaia data release (DR4), we analysed the preliminary astrometric binary solutions, obtained by the Gaia Non-Single Star pipeline, to verify their significance and to minimise false-detection rates in high-mass-function orbital solutions. The astrometric binary solution of one source, Gaia BH3, implies the presence of a 32.70 \pm 0.82 M\odot BH in a binary system with a period of 11.6 yr. Gaia radial velocities independently validate the astrometric orbit. Broad-band photometric and spectroscopic data show that the visible component is an old, very metal-poor giant of the Galactic halo, at a distance of 590 pc. The BH in the Gaia BH3 system is more massive than any other Galactic stellar-origin BH known thus far. The low metallicity of the star companion supports the scenario that metal-poor massive stars are progenitors of the high-mass BHs detected by gravitational-wave telescopes. The Galactic orbit of the system and its metallicity indicate that it might belong to the Sequoia halo substructure. Abstract

This paper is devoted to the problem of approximating non-linear Stochastic Partial Differential Equations (SPDEs) via interacting particle systems. In particular, we consider the Stochastic McKean-Vlasov equation, which is the McKean-Vlasov (MKV) PDE, perturbed by additive trace class noise. As is well-known, the MKV PDE can be obtained as mean field limit of the empirical measure of a stochastic system of interacting particles, where particles are subject to independent sources of noise. There is now a natural question, which is the one we consider and answer in this paper: can we obtain the SMKV equation, i.e. additive perturbations of the MKV PDE, as limit of interacting particle systems? It turns out that, in order to obtain the SMKV equation, one needs to study weighted empirical measures of particles, where the particles evolve according to a system of SDEs with independent noise, while the weights are time evolving and subject to common noise. The work of this manuscript therefore complements and contributes to various streams of literature, in particular: i) much attention in the community is currently devoted to obtaining SPDEs as scaling limits of appropriate dynamics; this paper contributes to a complementary stream, which is devoted to obtaining representations of SPDE through limits of empirical measures of interacting particle systems; ii) since the literature on limits of weighted empirical measures is often constrained to the case of static (random or deterministic) weights, this paper contributes to further expanding this line of research to the case of time-evolving weights., Comment: 62 pages

Abstract

Lagrangians can differ by a total derivative without altering the equations of motion, thus encoding the same physics. This is in general true both classically and quantum mechanically. We show, however, that in the context of open quantum systems, two Lagrangians that differ by a total derivative can lead to different physical predictions. We then discuss the criterion that allows one to choose between such Lagrangians. Further, starting from the appropriate QED Lagrangian, we derive the master equation for the non-relativistic electron interacting with thermal photons upto second order in the interactions. This case study lends further phenomenological support to our proposed criterion.

Abstract

Several Tensor Basis Neural Network (TBNN) frameworks aimed at enhancing turbulence RANS modeling have recently been proposed in the literature as data-driven constitutive models for systems with known invariance properties. However, persistent ambiguities remain regarding the physical adequacy of applying the General Eddy Viscosity Model (GEVM). This work aims at investigating this aspect in an a priori stage for better predictions of the Reynolds stress anisotropy tensor, while preserving the Galilean and rotational invariances. In particular, we propose a general framework providing optimal tensor basis models for two types of canonical flows: Plane Channel Flow (PCF) and Square Duct Flow (SDF). Subsequently, deep neural networks based on these optimal models are trained using state-of-the-art strategies to achieve a balanced and physically sound prediction of the full anisotropy tensor. A priori results obtained by the proposed framework are in very good agreement with the reference DNS data. Notably, our shallow network with three layers provides accurate predictions of the anisotropy tensor for PCF at unobserved friction Reynolds numbers, both in interpolation and extrapolation scenarios. Learning the SDF case is more challenging because of its physical nature and a lack of training data at various regimes. We propose to alleviate this problem based on Transfer Learning (TL). To more efficiently generalize to an unseen intermediate $\mathrm{Re}_\tau$ regime, we take advantage of our prior knowledge acquired from a training with a larger and wider dataset. Our results indicate the potential of the developed network model, and demonstrate the feasibility and efficiency of the TL process in terms of training data size and training time. Based on these results, we believe there is a promising future by integrating these neural networks into an adapted in-house RANS solver.

Abstract

We show that the freeness problems for automaton semigroups and for automaton monoids are undecidable by giving a reduction from Post's Correspondence Problem. This construction seems to be quite versatile and we also immediately obtain that the problems of testing whether a given automaton semigroup (monoid) is (left) cancellative or whether it is equidivisible are undecidable. We also obtain that it is undecidable whether a given map extends into a homomorphism of automaton semigroups. Finally, we adapt our construction to show that it is undecidable whether a given automaton generates a free monoid whose basis is given by the states (but where we allow one state to act as the identity). In the semigroup case, we show a weaker version of this statement.

We use photometric metallicity estimates for about 700000 stars in the surroundings of the Sun, with very accurate distances and 3-D motions measures from Gaia DR3, to explore the properties of the metal-poor (-2.0<[Fe/H]<= -1.5; MP) and very metal-poor ([Fe/H]<= -2.0; VMP) stars with disc kinematics in the sample. We confirm the presence of a significant fraction of MP and VMP stars with disc-like orbits and that prograde orbits are prevalent among them, with prograde to retrograde ratio P/R ~3. We highlight for the first time a statistically significant difference in the distribution of the Z-component of the angular momentum (L_Z) and orbital eccentricity between prograde and retrograde disc-like MP stars. The same kind of difference is found also in the VMP subsample, albeit at a much lower level of statistical significance, likely due to the small sample size. We show that prograde disc-like MP and VMP stars display an additional component of the |L_Z| distribution with respect to their retrograde counterpart. This component is at higher |L_Z| with respect to the main peak of the distribution, possibly hinting at the presence of a pristine prograde disc in the Milky Way. This hypothesis is supported by the results of the analysis of a large sub-sample dominated by stars born in-situ. Also in this case the prevalence of prograde stars is clearly detected at [Fe/H]<= -1.5 and their |L_Z| distribution is more skewed toward high |L_Z| values than their retrograde counterpart. This suggests that the seed of what will eventually evolve into the main disc components of the Milky Way may have been already in place in the earliest phases of the Galaxy assembly., Comment: Accepted by A&A. Abstract

In recent decades, the research community has focused on younger generations' technology readiness, known as The Digital Natives Debate. At the higher education level, this debate led to studies on the quality of digital technology use among undergraduate students. However, empirical investigations on how digital literacy programs can support students' academic practices are still lacking. This paper presents the results of a project-based learning approach in higher education to enhance digital literacy skills in teaching. The findings demonstrate large effect sizes in favor of operational, information-navigation, social, creative, and critical skills, providing evidence that project-based learning can significantly improve digital literacy skills and support academic learning in higher education. 23. The Effects of Age and Learning with Educational Robotic Devices on Children's Algorithmic Thinking

Abstract

Educational Robotics is increasingly used in elementary-school classrooms to develop students' algorithmic thinking and programming skills. However, most research appears descriptive and lacks experimental evidence on the effects of teaching interventions using robotics to develop algorithmic thinking. Using the robots Dash and Dot, this study examined algorithmic thinking development in groups of children aged 6, 9, and 12. The results showed a statistically significant main effect between the age of students and algorithmic thinking skills and a statistically significant main effect between intervention and algorithmic thinking. In conclusion, the findings underscore the necessity of providing learners with structured, scaffolded activities tailored to their age to effectively nurture algorithmic thinking skills when engaging in Dash and Dot activities. Abstract

Gaia's readout window strategy is challenged by very dense fields in the sky. Therefore, in addition to standard Gaia observations, full Sky Mapper (SM) images were recorded for nine selected regions in the sky. A new software pipeline exploits these Service Interface Function (SIF) images of crowded fields (CFs), making use of the availability of the full two-dimensional (2D) information. This new pipeline produced half a million additional Gaia sources in the region of the omega Centauri ($\omega$ Cen) cluster, which are published with this Focused Product Release. We discuss the dedicated SIF CF data reduction pipeline, validate its data products, and introduce their Gaia archive table. Our aim is to improve the completeness of the {\it Gaia} source inventory in a very dense region in the sky, $\omega$ Cen. An adapted version of {\it Gaia}'s Source Detection and Image Parameter Determination software located sources in the 2D SIF CF images. We validated the results by comparing them to the public {\it Gaia} DR3 catalogue and external Hubble Space Telescope data. With this Focused Product Release, 526\,587 new sources have been added to the {\it Gaia} catalogue in $\omega$ Cen. Apart from positions and brightnesses, the additional catalogue contains parallaxes and proper motions, but no meaningful colour information. While SIF CF source parameters generally have a lower precision than nominal {\it Gaia} sources, in the cluster centre they increase the depth of the combined catalogue by three magnitudes and improve the source density by a factor of ten. This first SIF CF data publication already adds great value to the {\it Gaia} catalogue. It demonstrates what to expect for the fourth {\it Gaia} catalogue, which will contain additional sources for all nine SIF CF regions.

Abstract

Context. Strongly lensed quasars are fundamental sources for cosmology. The Gaia space mission covers the entire sky with the unprecedented resolution of $0.18$" in the optical, making it an ideal instrument to search for gravitational lenses down to the limiting magnitude of 21. Nevertheless, the previous Gaia Data Releases are known to be incomplete for small angular separations such as those expected for most lenses. Aims. We present the Data Processing and Analysis Consortium GravLens pipeline, which was built to analyse all Gaia detections around quasars and to cluster them into sources, thus producing a catalogue of secondary sources around each quasar. We analysed the resulting catalogue to produce scores that indicate source configurations that are compatible with strongly lensed quasars. Methods. GravLens uses the DBSCAN unsupervised clustering algorithm to detect sources around quasars. The resulting catalogue of multiplets is then analysed with several methods to identify potential gravitational lenses. We developed and applied an outlier scoring method, a comparison between the average BP and RP spectra of the components, and we also used an extremely randomised tree algorithm. These methods produce scores to identify the most probable configurations and to establish a list of lens candidates. Results. We analysed the environment of 3 760 032 quasars. A total of 4 760 920 sources, including the quasars, were found within 6" of the quasar positions. This list is given in the Gaia archive. In 87\% of cases, the quasar remains a single source, and in 501 385 cases neighbouring sources were detected. We propose a list of 381 lensed candidates, of which we identified 49 as the most promising. Abstract

The third Gaia Data Release (DR3) provided photometric time series of more than 2 million long-period variable (LPV) candidates. Anticipating the publication of full radial-velocity (RV) in DR4, this Focused Product Release (FPR) provides RV time series for a selection of LPVs with high-quality observations. We describe the production and content of the Gaia catalog of LPV RV time series, and the methods used to compute variability parameters published in the Gaia FPR. Starting from the DR3 LPVs catalog, we applied filters to construct a sample of sources with high-quality RV measurements. We modeled their RV and photometric time series to derive their periods and amplitudes, and further refined the sample by requiring compatibility between the RV period and at least one of the $G$, $G_{\rm BP}$, or $G_{\rm RP}$ photometric periods. The catalog includes RV time series and variability parameters for 9\,614 sources in the magnitude range $6\lesssim G/{\rm mag}\lesssim 14$, including a flagged top-quality subsample of 6\,093 stars whose RV periods are fully compatible with the values derived from the $G$, $G_{\rm BP}$, and $G_{\rm RP}$ photometric time series. The RV time series contain a mean of 24 measurements per source taken unevenly over a duration of about three years. We identify the great most sources (88%) as genuine LPVs, with about half of them showing a pulsation period and the other half displaying a long secondary period. The remaining 12% consists of candidate ellipsoidal binaries. Quality checks against RVs available in the literature show excellent agreement. We provide illustrative examples and cautionary remarks. The publication of RV time series for almost 10\,000 LPVs constitutes, by far, the largest such database available to date in the literature. Abstract

Aims. To describe two potential options for the Source Environment Analysis pipeline, SEAPipe, for the Gaia mission. This pipeline will enable the discovery of sources which are new to Gaia, in the sense that they were not found by the on-board detection algorithm. These additional sources (secondaries) are discoverable in the vicinity of those Gaia sources (primaries) that were found by the on-board detection. Methods. The main algorithmic steps required are described; the 2-dimensional image reconstruction of 1-dimensional transit data, the analysis of these images to find the additional sources present, and the determination of the mean positions, proper motions, parallaxes and brightness of these sources. Additionally, the Monte Carlo simulations used to characterise the performance of the pipelines are described. Results. The performance of the two options for SEAPipe, the vanilla and image-subtraction versions, are compared. Their selection functions are computed in terms of the magnitude of the secondary sources and their angular separations from their corresponding primary source. The completeness and purity of the resultant catalogue of secondary sources as found by each of the pipelines, given the expected magnitude distribution of the primary sources and the magnitude and angular separation distributions of the secondary sources, is also presented. Abstract

Hardware-efficient empirical variational ans\"atze for Variational Quantum Eigensolver simulations of Quantum Chemistry suffer from the lack of a direct connection to classical Quantum Chemistry methods. In the present work, we propose a method to fill this gap by introducing a new approach for constructing variational quantum circuits, leveraging quantum mutual information associated with classical Quantum Chemistry states to design simple yet effective heuristic ans\"atze with a topology that reflects the correlations of the molecular system. As first step, Quantum Chemistry calculations, such as M{\o}ller-Plesset (MP2) perturbation theory, firstly provide an approximate Natural Orbitals basis, which has been recently shown to be the best candidate one-electron basis for developing compact empirical wavefunctions (Ratini, et al 2023). Secondly, throughout the evaluation of quantum mutual information matrices, they provide information about the main correlations between qubits of the quantum circuit, enabling the development of a direct design of entangling blocks for the circuit. The resulting ansatz is then utilized with a Variational Quantum Eigensolver (VQE) to obtain a short depth variational groundstate of the electronic Hamiltonian. To validate our approach, we perform a comprehensive statistical analysis by simulations over various molecular systems ($H_2, LiH, H_2O$) and apply it to the more complex $NH_3$ molecule. The reported results demonstrate that the proposed methodology gives rise to highly effective ans\"atze, surpassing the standard empirical ladder-entangler ansatz in performance. Abstract

We use the spectro-photometric information of ~219 million stars from Gaia's DR3 to calculate synthetic, narrow-band, metallicity-sensitive CaHK magnitudes that mimic the observations of the Pristine survey, a survey of photometric metallicities of Milky Way stars that has been mapping more than 6,500 deg^2 of the northern sky with the CFHT since 2015. These synthetic magnitudes are used for an absolute re-calibration of the deeper Pristine photometry and, combined with broadband Gaia information, synthetic and Pristine CaHK magnitudes are used to estimate photometric metallicities over the whole sky. The resulting metallicity catalogue is accurate down to [Fe/H]~-3.5 and is particularly suited for the exploration of the metal-poor Milky Way ([Fe/H]<-1.0). We make available here the catalogue of synthetic CaHK_syn magnitudes for all stars with BP/RP information in Gaia DR3, as well as an associated catalogue of more than ~30 million photometric metallicities for high S/N FGK stars. This paper further provides the first public DR of the Pristine catalogue in the form of higher quality recalibrated Pristine CaHK magnitudes and photometric metallicities for all stars in common with the BP/RP information in Gaia DR3. We demonstrate that, when available, the much deeper Pristine data greatly enhances the quality of the derived metallicities, in particular at the faint end of the catalogue (G_BP>16). Combined, both catalogues include more than 2 million metal-poor star candidates as well as more than 200,000 and ~8,000 very and extremely metal-poor candidates. Finally, we show that these metallicity catalogues can be used efficiently, among other applications, for Galactic archaeology, to hunt for the most metal-poor stars, and to study how the structure of the Milky Way varies with metallicity, from the flat distribution of disk stars to the spheroid-shaped metal-poor halo. 30. Switching to Virtual Classes: Exploring Teacher Readiness under the 'New Normal'

Abstract

The recent global pandemic necessitated a shift which compelled educators to embrace online modalities. The authors examined the preparedness of teachers for this transition in three key domains: material readiness, home environment readiness and psychological disposition readiness. Survey data, gathered from 219 Filipino educators via an online questionnaire, revealed noteworthy insights. Most respondents registered a lack of confidence in internet connectivity and admitted not having household surroundings conducive to work-from-home arrangements. Despite some educators expressing readiness for online instruction, a prevalent theme emerged wherein a majority demonstrated unwillingness to assume the role of 'digital teachers'. This study posits that while transitioning to non-traditional spaces like the online platform is imperative in times of global pandemic, being mindful of the myriad of readiness issues faced by educators is equally important to ensure a truly meaningful and effective online teaching experience.

31. Reading and Creating Books: Bridging the Distance from Stories to E-Stories

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to investigate the impact of a two-phase intervention programme meant to reinforce comprehension of the structural framework of stories among 92 preschool children (aged 4-6 years) over 4 months. During the first phase, the children were called upon to produce their own original stories following the "Story Grammar" pattern, while in the second phase, based on their previous training on the structural framework of stories, they were trained to produce digital stories using the web2 tool "StoryJumper." Both phases of the intervention programme included a combination of verbal and visual aids. The quantitative analysis of the data showed that the intervention programme significantly improved children's ability to comprehend the structural elements of stories and to create organized, comprehensible stories. Following our expectations, the children's new knowledge on the structure of stories was transferred to their digital creations. The implementation of the intervention programme helped substantive questions emerge about the formation of a multi-level strategy which would effectively support the transfer of knowledge and skills from a traditional to a digital environment through processes that are meaningful for children.

Abstract

The ultimate impact of labor market discrimination depends not only on whether employers discriminate but also on job seekers’ responses to (expected) discrimination. We ran three field experiments with 2,200 job seekers to study these responses in the context of Rio de Janeiro’s favelas. In this sample, over 80% of job seekers overestimate anti-favela discrimination, as we measure it in a new audit study. We partnered with a private firm with real job openings to estimate how expected discrimination affects job application behavior and interview performance. Interview performance is 0.13 SD higher for job seekers randomly told that their interviewer would know only their name, as opposed to their name and address. In contrast, average job application rates are unaffected by (i) removing the need to declare an address at the application stage, and (ii) information that we did not find evidence of discrimination in our audit study. White job seekers are an exception since removing the need to declare an address increases their application rates. The effect of expected address visibility at the interview also concentrates on white job seekers. This heterogeneity may be because, with hidden addresses, white job seekers can pass for non-favela residents. Passing is harder for non-whites (a majority in favelas, but not outside), who might also expect racial discrimination anyway. Our findings show that expected discrimination may affect job seekers’ search, especially in in-person interactions.

33. Mechanically-primed voltage-gated proton channels from angiosperm plants.

Abstract

Voltage-gated and mechanically-gated ion channels are distinct classes of membrane proteins that conduct ions across gated pores and are turned on by electrical or mechanical stimuli, respectively. Here, we describe an Hv channel (a.k.a voltage-dependent H+ channel) from the angiosperm plant A. thaliana that gates with a unique modality as it is turned on by an electrical stimulus only after exposure to a mechanical stimulus, a process that we call priming. The channel localizes in the vascular tissue and has homologs in vascular plants. We find that mechanical priming is not required for activation of non-angiosperm Hvs. Guided by AI-generated structural models of plant Hv homologs, we identify a set of residues playing a crucial role in mechanical priming. We propose that Hvs from angiosperm plants require priming because of a network of hydrophilic/charged residues that locks the channels in a silent resting conformation. Mechanical stimuli destabilize the network allowing the conduction pathway to turn on. In contrast to many other channels and receptors, Hv proteins are not thought to possess mechanisms such as inactivation or desensitization. Our findings demonstrate that angiosperm Hv channels are electrically silent until a mechanical stimulation turns on their voltage-dependent activity.

In previous work, we have developed an approach for characterizing the long-term dynamics of classes of Biological Interaction Networks (BINs), based on "rate-dependent Lyapunov functions". In this work, we show that stronger notions of convergence can be established by proving structural contractivity with respect to non-standard norms. We illustrate our theory with examples from signaling pathways.

To this end we analyse the interplay of dissipativity and optimal control, and propose novel recursive approaches for the solution of so called shifted Bellman Equations.

Abstract

This paper introduces small-gain sufficient conditions for $2$-contraction of feedback interconnected systems, on the basis of individual gains of suitable subsystems arising from a modular decomposition of the second additive compound equation. The condition applies even to cases when individual subsystems might fail to be contractive (due to the extra margin of contraction afforded by the second additive compound matrix). Abstract

Refugee and migration crises has been an integral part of the continuous and successive crises that the world has been experiencing. Media has played a crucial role in shaping public opinion over migration and asylum-seeking. Within this context, this paper aims to discuss Greek media coverage of the migrant shipwreck off the Greek coast of Pylos, in June 2023, in which more than 600 people mostly from Syria, Egypt, and Pakistan are thought to have drowned. Based on data from a quantitative content analysis and a sample of news stories stemming from the online version of five Greek news media outlets, representing diverse political spaces, a broader set of criteria for content analysis, including the absence of refugee and migrant voice in media content, dehumanization, absence of solutions and context, among many others, was used in order to explore how the Greek media framed what has been labeled as one of the deadliest migrant shipwrecks in the Mediterranean. Results revealed (i) frames of dehumanization, (ii) insufficient reporting of injustice and discrimination stemming from (state) structures and practices, and an (iii) overemphasis on migrant smuggling.

Abstract

Background: The risk of hepatocarcinoma in HCV cirrhotic patient responders after treatment with DAAs decrease, but HCC still occurs. A correlation between specific miRNAs and the development of hepatocarcinoma have been highlighted. Aim: To investigate miRNA expression in HCV-infected cirrhotic patients treated with DAAs, regarding whether or not they developed HCC at follow-up. Methods: A total of 73 outpatients with HCV-related cirrhosis treated with DAAs were enrolled, 28 of which had HCC. Samples were collected at the start and at the end of treatment. In the screening phase, 172 miRNAs were analyzed at baseline. Differentially expressed miRNAs were validated in the entire cohort. Results: In the validation phase, at baseline and in patients treated for 12 weeks, miR-28-5p was confirmed to be more highly expressed in the HCC group compared to the non-HCC group. In all of the patients treated for 12 weeks, at end of the treatment we found a significant downregulation in miR-132-3p, miR-133b-3p, miR-221-3p and miR-324-3p. In the HCC group, miR-28-5p was significantly downregulated after DAA therapy as well as in HCC patients treated for 24 weeks. Conclusion: In the HCC group, miR28-5p was differently expressed both at baseline and at the end of therapy with DAAs. This difference in expression should suggest its involvement in HCC development.

Abstract Background The diagnostic and prognostic relevance of Human Leukocyte Antigen B-27 (HLA-B27) in Axial Spondyloarthritis (AxSpA) is undeniable, with 70% of Ankylosing Spondylitis (AS) patients carrying the B27 gene, contrasted with a mere 4.35% in the general population. Flow cytometry (FC) and Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) have emerged as the predominant techniques for routine HLA-B27 typing. While various studies have compared these methods, none have catered to the unique characteristics of the Brazilian demographic. Therefore, this research aims to compare FC and PCR in a Brazilian cohort diagnosed with AxSpA.
