In this paper, we present the Cloud Property Graph (CloudPG), which bridges the gap between static code analysis and runtime security assessment of cloud services. The CloudPG is able to resolve data flows between cloud applications deployed on different resources, and contextualizes the graph with runtime information, such as encryption settings. To provide a vendor- and technology-independent representation of a cloud service's security posture, the graph is based on an ontology of cloud resources, their functionalities and security features. We show, using an example, that our CloudPG framework can be used by security experts to identify weaknesses in their cloud deployments, spanning multiple vendors or technologies, such as AWS, Azure and Kubernetes. This includes misconfigurations, such as publicly accessible storages or undesired data flows within a cloud service, as restricted by regulations such as GDPR.

Many organizations are still reluctant to move sensitive data to the cloud. Moreover, data protection regulations have established considerable punishments for violations of privacy and security requirements. Privacy, however, is a concept that is difficult to measure and to demonstrate. While many privacy design strategies, tactics and patterns have been proposed for privacy-preserving system design, it is difficult to evaluate an existing system with regards to whether these strategies have or have not appropriately been implemented. In this paper we propose indicators for a system's non-compliance with privacy design strategies, called privacy smells. To that end we first identify concrete metrics that measure certain aspects of existing privacy design strategies. We then define smells based on these metrics and discuss their limitations and usefulness. We identify these indicators on two levels of a cloud system: the data flow level and the access control level. Using a cloud system built in Microsoft Azure we show how the metrics can be measured technically and discuss the differences to other cloud providers, namely Amazon Web Services and Google Cloud Platform. We argue that while it is difficult to evaluate the privacy-awareness in a cloud system overall, certain privacy aspects in cloud systems can be mapped to useful metrics that can indicate underlying privacy problems. With this approach we aim at enabling cloud users and auditors to detect deep-rooted privacy problems in cloud systems.

As cloud services become central in an increasing number of applications, they process and store more personal and business-critical data. At the same time, privacy and compliance regulations such as GDPR, the EU ePrivacy regulation, PCI, and the upcoming EU Cybersecurity Act raise the bar for secure processing and traceability of critical data. Especially the demand to provide information about existing data records of an individual and the ability to delete them on demand is central in privacy regulations. Common to these requirements is that cloud providers must be able to track data as it flows across the different services to ensure that it never moves outside of the legitimate realm, and it is known at all times where a specific copy of a record that belongs to a specific individual or business process is located. However, current cloud architectures do neither provide the means to holistically track data flows across different services nor to enforce policies on data flows. In this paper, we point out the deficits in the data flow tracking functionalities of major cloud providers by means of a set of practical experiments. We then generalize from these experiments introducing a generic architecture that aims at solving the problem of cloud-wide data flow tracking and show how it can be built in a Kubernetes-based prototype implementation., 11 pages, 5 figures, 2020 IEEE 13th International Conference on Cloud Computing (CLOUD)

Objective Dietary proteins raise blood glucose levels; dietary fats delay this rise. We sought to assess the insulin amount required to normalize glucose levels after a fat- and protein-rich meal (FPRM). Methods Sixteen adolescents (5 female) with type 1 diabetes (median age: 18.2 years; range: 15.2–24.0; duration: 7.1 years; 2.3–14.3; HbA1c: 7.2%; 6.2–8.3%) were included. FPRM (carbohydrates 57 g; protein 92 g; fat 39 g; fibers 7 g; calories 975 Kcal) was served in the evening, with 20 or 40% extra insulin compared to a standard meal (SM) (carbohydrates 70 g; protein 28 g; fat 19 g; fibers 10 g; calories 579 Kcal) or carbohydrates only. Insulin was administered for patients on intensified insulin therapy or as a 4-hour-delayed bolus for those on pump therapy. The 12-hour post-meal glucose levels were compared between FPRM and SM, with the extra insulin amount calculated based on 100 g proteins as a multiple of the carbohydrate unit. Results Glucose levels (median, mg/dL) 12-hour post-meal with 20% extra insulin vs. 40% vs. insulin dose for SM were 116 vs. 113 vs. 91. Glucose-AUC over 12-hour post-meal with 20% extra insulin vs. 40% vs. insulin dose for SM was 1603 mg/dL/12 h vs. 1527 vs. 1400 (no significance). Glucose levels in the target range with 20% extra insulin vs. 40% were 60% vs. 69% (p=0.1). Glucose levels Conclusions We recommend administering the same insulin dose given for 1 carbohydrate unit (10 g carbs) to cover 50 g protein.

Untersucht wird, wie der um 1920 erschienene fünfte Band der Nesthäkchen-Serie von ELSE URY typische Elemente des Backfischromans mit der Thematisierung der deutschen Revolution von 1918/1919 zu einer teils heterogenen, teils stimmigen Erzählung verbindet. Dazu wird das Konzept der Serie erläutert und als Teil der Modernisierung und Politisierung des Mädchenbuchs im späten Kaiserreich beschrieben. Die textnahe Lektüre konzentriert sich auf die bürgerliche Sicht der Revolution, den Klassenkonflikt und die Debatte um Schülerräte als den wichtigsten Aspekten dieses ‚Revolutionsromans für junge Mädchen‘. The fifth volume of ELSE URY’S Nesthäkchen series, published around 1920, combines typical elements of the “Backfischroman” (teenage girl novel) with motifs of the German Revolution of 1918/1919 and creates a partially heterogenic and partially homogenic narrative. In this context the idea behind the entire series is presented and the way in which the series became part of the process of modernization and politicization of books for girls in the late Empire is discussed. The analysis shows how the text focuses on the revolution, class conflict, and debates on student councils from a bourgeois perspective, foregrounding them as the most important aspects of the “revolutionary novel for young girls”. Przedmiotem artykułu jest zbadanie, w jaki sposób opublikowany około 1920 roku piąty tom serii Nesthäkchen ELSE URY łączy typowe elementy Backfischroman (powieści dla dorastających dziewcząt) z tematem rewolucji niemieckiej 1918/1919, tworząc częściowo heterogeniczną, częściowo jednolitą narrację. W tym kontekście przedstawiono koncepcję serii i pokazano, w jaki sposób wpisywała się ona w proces modernizacji i upolitycznienia książek dla dziewcząt u schyłku Cesarstwa Niemieckiego. Analiza samego tekstu skupia się na burżuazyjnym spojrzeniu na rewolucję, konflikcie klasowym i debacie wokół rad uczniowskich jako najważniejszych aspektach tej ,powieści rewolucyjnej dla młodych dziewcząt’.

Objective Traditionally insulin dosage is focused on the carbohydrate amount of meals. We investigated the influence of a fat- and protein-rich meal in the evening on glucose concentration over night in adolescents with type 1 diabetes. Research design and methods Fifteen patients, mean age 16.8 [standard deviation (SD) 2.9] yr participated in the study. Mean glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) was 6.9 (range: 6.0–8.9) %. On two consecutive days the patients received a standard meal (SM) and a fat–protein-rich evening meal (FPRM). The carbohydrate amount remained identical and insulin was adjusted to this carbohydrate amount with the individual carbohydrate bolus. Glucose was measured continuously over night with the Enlite sensor and the Guardian system (Medtronic) during the following 12 h after the meal. Results Glucose area under the curve (AUC) for SM was 1400 (SD 580) mg/dL/12 h and for FPRM 1968 (SD 394) mg/dL/12 h (p 150 mg/dL, for FPRM it was 3 and 48%. Conclusions Twelve hours after a FPRM glucose concentration is significantly higher. Dietary counseling should include the effect of protein and fat on glucose levels in adolescents with type 1 diabetes. The data indicate clearly a need for additional insulin for fat–protein-rich meals.

The frequency of remating in Drosophila melanogaster is affected by both genetic and ecological factors. We studied the remating behaviour in one European (Italy) and one African (Uganda) Drosophila simulans population using six highly polymorphic microsatellite markers. Despite that the populations were genetically distinct (F(ST) = 0.18) and originated from very dissimilar ecological settings with different population densities, we inferred a very similar mating pattern. The remating parameter alpha was similar in both populations (a = 1.3-1.4). No more than two distinct paternal genotypes per family were detected in each population.

The actions of mammalian insulin-like growth factors (IGF-I and IGF-II) and insulin on skeletal growth of the axolotl,Ambystoma mexicanum,were examined by monitoring thein vitrouptake of [35S]sulfate by cartilage. Both growth factors stimulated sulfate uptake significantly at a concentration of 13 nM.The increase after incubation with 130 nMinsulin was similar (uptake ca. 160% of control), but the effect was not significant. Further, the binding of125I-IGF-I and125I-IGF-II was studied in the skeletal tissue by quantitativein vitroautoradiography. Specific binding sites for both growth factors were localized in the perichondrial tissue.125I-IGF-II binding sites were saturated at the used doses. Scatchard and Hill plots demonstrate heterogeneous binding sites exhibiting positive cooperativity. IGF-II was more effective than IGF-I in competitively displacing both labeled ligands. Insulin only slightly affected the binding at the highest concentrations. These results indicate that the insulin-like growth factors regulate skeletal growth in urodeles as in mammals.

The influence of various mammalian hormones and growth factors on the skeletal growth in the clawed toad was examined in vitro by monitoring the uptake of [ 35 S]sulfate by tadpole's hindlimbs. Autoradiographic studies demonstrated that the isotope was mainly incorporated into the cartilage. Sulfate uptake was significantly stimulated by 13 nM insulin-like growth factor I (IGF-I) in all experiments. The effect of 13 nM IGF-II was statistically significant only in approximately 50% of the experiments. Insulin was inconsistently effective. A significant stimulation was found using 1300 nM insulin. Neither prolactin and growth hormone nor the thyroid hormones thyroxine and triiodothyronine affected the [ 35 S]sulfate uptake in vitro . The results indicate that cartilage growth in amphibians is mainly stimulated by IGF-I and to a less extend by IGF-II like in mammals.
