Abstract

Patch testing is the standard procedure used to diagnose allergic contact dermatitis. It is an in-vivo test, which reproduces the reaction to a contact allergen. This in-vivo test aims to reproduce the elicitation phase of allergic contact dermatitis and is performed applying allergens under occlusion on the skin under standardized conditions. These guidelines for the best practice in performing patch test have been developed by an Italian group of experts taking in account the Italian legislation and local pharmacological governance. Guidelines are adapted from the original article under the guidance of the European Society of Contact Dermatitis (ESCD) and on the basis of the SIDAPA guidelines.

Abstract

Atopic dermatitis (AD) therapeutic approach calls for a long-term treatment. Treatment options for AD have recently undergone a revolutionary change by the introduction of the first biologic drug. Availability in daily practice of the last version of international AD guidelines, taking peculiarities of the country into account, can contribute to good clinical practice in Italy. To adapt European Dermatology Forum (EDF) guidelines for AD to the Italian medical–legal context, the EDF guidelines were assessed independently by two independent Italian renowned experts in the field and further integrated with articles published and systematically reviewed before May 2019. The first draft was collegially corrected and updated by the members of the SIDEMAST, ADOI, and SIDAPA. Recommendation levels (A; B; C; D) were graded based on the evidence levels (1–4). The adapted guidelines presented here focus on topical and systemic therapies in AD patients, both children and adults. As opposed to previous Italian guidelines, they include indications about biologics. New relevant evidence available from very recent literature and peculiarities of the Italian medical and legal context have been integrated in the revision process. If compared to general guidelines for AD not adapted to a specific national and cultural context, a revision for specific Italian needs is now available: It comprises the option of implementing the new biologic treatments and is likely to provide an important contribution to the improvement of clinical practice in Italy. Cooperation between patients, dermatologists, allergologists, and pediatricians remains mandatory in AD management. The authors of the present revision recommend an update of the Italian guidelines to be performed at least every second year.

Abstract

The influence of Bactrocera oleae attack on the quality of the oil during the ripening of olives was investigated. Four olive samples of the Chemlal cultivar at different stages of ripening, identified by the colour of the skin and pulp, and with different levels of attack, were harvested and extracted. The results show that both attack by B. oleae and the degree of ripening affected the quantitative and qualitative composition of the oil. The extent of the changes was much greater when the olives were attacked and harvested at an advanced stage of maturity. The main changes involved the quality chemical indexes, pigment concentration, phenol and volatile fractions, and consequently, the organoleptic characteristics. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Variable quantities of leaves were added to ripe olives prior to extraction to determine their effect on the quality of the resulting olive oil. The addition of 1-3% w/w leaves improved the organoleptic quality. An increase in trans-2-hexenal aldehyde content occurred, giving the pleasant flavor of 'freshly cut grass.' This compound was produced by the enzymatic breakdown of 13-L-hydroperoxide of linolenic acid in leaf homogenates. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Monovarietal virgin olive oils (VOOs) are very effective to study relationships among sensory attributes, the compounds responsible for flavour, and factors affecting them. The stimulation of the human sensory receptors by volatile and non-volatile compounds present in monovarietal virgin olive oils gives rise to the sensory attributes that describe their peculiar delicate and fragrant flavours. The formation of these compounds is briefly illustrated and the influence of the agronomic and technological factors that affect their concentrations in the oil is examined. The relationships between compounds responsible for the olive oil flavour and sensory attributes are discussed. 28. Characterization of Seven New Hydrocarbon Compounds Present in the Aroma of Virgin Olive Oils.

Abstract

Seven isomeric hydrocarbons were detected in the volatile fraction of three samples of virgin olive oil. Chemical ionization mass spectrometry was used to assign the molecular formulas. Their structures were confirmed by comparison of retention time and mass spectral data with those of a synthetic sample obtained by pentene radical coupling. A final characterization of each chromatographic peak was done by means of a chiral capillary column to distinguish the optically active compounds from the isomers without chiral centers. For the quantitation the recovery factor in the oily matrix during the extraction of the volatile fraction was obtained using a related chemical, the commercially available beta-citronellene. On the basis of the previous literature and the present experiments a tentative rationalization of the involved biochemical pathway is proposed.
