The Minimalist Program launched by N. Chomsky (1995) inspired reductionist accounts of Control phenomena, which tried to eliminate ‘PRO’ from the theory of grammar, treating it as a trace (copy) of movement (Martin 1996; O’Neil 1997; Hornstein 1999 et seq.). Such movement theories of Control are directly challenged by the use of inflected infinitives in Brazilian Portuguese (BP), as shown in Modesto (2010). Many supporters of the movement theory, however, have denied the empirical argument, making the claim that inflected infinitives “are not natural in BP” (Rodrigues & Hornstein 2013: 307), not belonging to BP’s “core grammar”. This study, then, presents two experiments in which production of nonfinite inflection is implicitly elicited in a pseudoword oral completion task. Participants from different linguistic geographic varieties (the cities of Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo) heard the pseudoverb in its gerundive form and were then prompted to insert the pseudoverb in a sentence frame that would be compatible with both uninflected and inflected infinitive forms. Our results show 73.3% of participants inflected the infinitive to some degree when indirectly primed to do so, and that 40.9% did so, even when not primed. Results also show that while linearly distant plural markings (on the subject) did not influence behavior, adjacent morphosyntactic plural markings (on secondary predicates, for instance) did slightly increase the probability of inflection. Both priming effects and sensitivity to morphosyntactic context seem to indicate that nonfinite inflection is a productive, albeit variable, feature of BP speakers’ I-grammar.

Testes de imagem cerebral mostram que depois da alfabetização, durante o reconhecimento de grafemas surge uma ativação na região ventro-occipito-temporal esquerda: a VWFA. Acredita-se que a VWFA impacte o mosáico de regiões vizinhas envolvidas no reconhecimento de objetos, lugares, parte do corpo e faces. Ela também influencia a região que abriga o reconhecimento dos sinais da fala. Esse estudo testa crianças nas fases pré e pós alfabetização, procurando correlatos comportamentais para esses achados neurofisilógicos. Encontramos impacto positivo da alfabetização no processamento da fala, mas, perda de acuidade provisória no reconhecimento de faces dos participantes recém-alfabetizados.

Este artigo reporta uma experiência acadêmica que teve lugar durante o segundo semestre letivo de 2018, na disciplina Introdução à Linguística, obrigatória para o curso de Graduação em Letras da Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ). Durante parte da disciplina, implementamos uma atividade inspirada no método Aprendizagem Baseada em Projeto (PBL – Project-Based Learning), para abordarmos um item do conteúdo programático: a Hipótese Sapir-Whorf (HSW). A HSW tem duas premissas básicas: (i) A língua que falamos e pensamos molda a maneira como percebemos o mundo; (ii) a existência de vários sistemas de linguagem implica que as pessoas que pensam nessas diferentes línguas devem perceber o mundo de forma diferente. Utilizando a estrutura da PBL, os alunos montaram um experimento envolvendo 22 falantes nativos de russo e português para verificar a versão forte da HBS. O experimento, embora com pequeno número de participantes e uma metodologia básica, seus achados nos permitiram observar que a avaliação dos pressupostos da HSW não podem ser descartados e merecem permanecer em uma agenda de pesquisa que se interesse em olhar para os fenômenos linguísticos de forma mais abrangente e menos dogmática.

Dados na literatura mostram que estruturas geradas por recursividade direta (RD) aparecem mais tardiamente que as geradas por recursividade indireta (RI). O presente estudo aborda esta questão, ao comparar o desempenho de crianças de 4 e 5 anos, diante de encaixamento recursivo de 2 e 3 PPs locativos em estruturas RD e RI. Na tarefa de pareamento sentença-figura, os participantes tiveram maior acurácia pareando as sentenças RD. RI ficou no nível da chance. Os tempos de resposta (TR) foram maiores nas condições RD e o número de PPs não foi relevante. Crianças de 5 anos tiveram proporcionalmente mais acertos para RD e RI e TRs maiores, indicando maior engajamento na tarefa. Sugerimos que a dificuldade da interpretação semântica restritiva, a interface memória/sintaxe e a ausência de marca morfológica de RI para PPs locativos em PB sejam fatores atuantes no baixo desempenho frente à RI.

Background Cognitive impairments are related to deficits in primary auditory and visual sensory processes in schizophrenia. These impairments can be remediated by neuroscience-informed computerized cognitive trainings that target auditory and visual processes. However, it is not clear which modality results in greater improvements in cognition, symptoms and quality of life. We aimed to investigate the impact of training auditory versus visual cognitive processes in global cognition in patients with schizophrenia. Methods Seventy-nine schizophrenia participants were randomly assigned to either 40 h of auditory or visual computerized training. Auditory and visual exercises were chosen to be dynamically equivalent and difficulties increased progressively during the training. We evaluated cognition, symptoms and quality of life before, after 20 h, and after 40 h of training. ClinicalTrials.gov (1R03TW009002-01). Results Participants who received the visual training showed significant improvements in global cognition compared to the auditory training group. The visual training significantly improved attention and reasoning and problem-solving, while the auditory training improved reasoning and problem-solving only. Schizophrenia symptoms improved after training in both groups, whereas quality of life remained unchanged. Interestingly, there was a significant and positive correlation between improvements in attention and symptoms in the visual training group. Conclusions We conclude that the visual training and the auditory training are differentially efficient at remediating cognitive deficits and symptoms of clinically stable schizophrenia patients. Ongoing follow-up of participants will evaluate the durability of training effects on cognition and symptoms, as well as the potential impact on quality of life over time.

An eye-tracking and an electrophysiological experiment using a sentence/picture matching task were carried out in order to assess whether there would be significant differences between semantic restrictiveness properties of Prepositional Phrases (PPs) vis-à-vis those of Relative Clauses (RCs), attached as modifiers respectively to a local PP or to a non-local DP (e.g. the horse with the parrot with brown spots/the horse with the parrot that has brown spots). Two hypotheses were entertained, namely, (i) an operator construction such as an RC would be construed non-locally, that is, would attach high as a default, even if there is semantic bias attracting it to a low attachment; (ii) a light constituent (PP) has no prosodic autonomy and will be more available to local attachment and therefore would tend to attach locally as a default, even if there is semantic bias attracting it to a high attachment. Results in both experiments were in favor of the hypotheses and we speculate whether they could be more deeply grounded into the representational alternatives projected by linguistic theory itself.

This study zooms in on the specialization of visual processing that underlies grapheme and word form processing, and presents an electrophysiological experiment performed with 8th graders in a public state elementary school. The methodology of Event Related Brain Potential (EEG-ERP) was used to collect and analyze the N170 component, a neurophysiological signature sensitive to grapheme and word form processing. The test results indicated that, in this group, higher performance in grapheme recognition was not associated to a reduced difference between ERP wave amplitudes in response to word and false font stimuli, but instead to a clear left lateralization of print sensitive N170 responses. Differently from most ERP studies that uses the grand-averaging of all participants’ ERP responses, the current analysis also investigated individual performance of participants. In this modality, the varying levels of intensity and lateralization of the neurophysiological response indicate that a large portion of the participants remain in the process of obtaining reading fluency long after having started to learn how to read. The qualitative correlation between performance and the degree of lateralization is, thus, a novel and promising measurement involving the N170 component as a descriptive and predictive tool in the monitoring of reading acquisition stages.

Este artigo se propõe a discutir o tema da iconicidade-arbitrariedade linguística (Saussure, 1916) no contexto de pré-alfabetização. Antes da instrução explícita, a criança pode se perguntar como decodificar a relação fala-escrita e uma das hipóteses por vezes nutrida é de cunho icônico: há pareamento entre o tamanho da palavra escrita e da coisa que ela representa (PIAGET, 1962). No âmbito arbitrário, há trabalhos que demonstram que crianças a partir de 3 a 9 meses de idade, fase pré-fala, já são capazes de compreender muitas palavras e até pseudopalavras geradas em ambiente de teste e, portanto, não icônicas (LIMA, 2009; WAXMAN & LIDZ, 2006; WAXMAN ET AL, 2009; SHI, 2014). Contudo, para indivíduos surdos, alvo de nosso interesse, que usam língua de sinais como L1, reconhecidamente mais icônica, quais estratégias default de pareamento são usadas antes da instrução formal? Essa é a pergunta que o presente estudo busca responder. Um teste experimental foi elaborado a fim de verificar a preferência de crianças surdas e ouvintes na escolha de palavras e pseudopalavras escritas na representação da mesma articulada, por meio de um vídeo, observando, assim, se fatores icônicos pesam mais significativamente no pareamento letra/som do que fatores arbitrários. ---DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.31513/linguistica.2018.v14n3a25508

In this squib, we present a brief summary on Executive Functions (FEs), a group of cognitive abilities that allow us to identify problems, establish goals and action plans towards solutions. We focused on their development in children and on how the lack of such functions might interfere in children’s engagement in linguistic experiments. Since, from the point of view of the child-participant, experiments do not have immediate purpose and do not favor their immediate well-being, children often lose interest and fail to engage in experimental tasks. Experiments might turn into boring activities to children whose FEs have not yet developed. As an alternative to mitigate these problems, we proposed that experimenters should consider the quality and ecological validity of experiments, thus avoiding large data loss, through playfulness and repetition of tasks especially concerning online experiments. To illustrate our suggestion, we report two alternative experiments that involve roleplaying tasks, which successfully engaged participants, incurring in minimal data loss. --- DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.31513/linguistica.2018.v14n3a25509

Resumo: Este trabalho tem como objetivo investigar, a partir da perspectiva da linguística experimental, o uso da iconicidade como estratégia de leitura provisória utilizada pelas crianças, durante a fase de pré-alfabetização. Contrastamos o recrutamento de iconicidade com a noção de arbitrariedade linguística default, como proposta por Saussure. Para testar a interação dessas duas apostas cognitivas - iconicidade e arbitrariedade - em crianças de três faixas etárias, 4, 5 e 6, propomos um experimento do tipo role-playing a fim de verificar se esses participantes usam relações icônicas para guiá-los em uma tarefa de pareamento entre figura e palavra escrita. Nossos resultados mostram que a iconicidade é um recurso usado por algumas crianças, especialmente as menores, de 4 anos, que tendem a estabelecer uma relação motivacional mais clara entre o tamanho dos objetos e o tamanho da palavra que os nomeia. Verificou-se que a iconicidade ainda persiste como estratégia de leitura em algumas crianças de 6 anos de idade, quando estão na idade de se engajarem em um programa formal de alfabetização. Diante desses resultados discutimos as implicações da escolha do método de alfabetização, seja favorecendo a leitura global ou a decodificação grafema-fonema, em relação, principalmente, a essas crianças, que tendem a preservar a estratégia icônica por mais tempo. Abstract: This article aims at investigating, from the perspective of experimental linguistics, the use of iconicity as a provisional reading strategy used by children during the pre-literacy phase. In the background, we contrast the recruitment of iconicity with the notion of default arbitrariness in language, as proposed by Saussure. To test the interplay of these cognitions, we propose a role-playing experiment with children from three age groups, 4, 5 and 6, in order to verify if these participants use iconic relations to guide them in a task of pairing figure to written word. Our results show that iconicity is a first-hand resource used by some children, specially 4 year-olds, who tended to establish a clearer motivational relationship between the size of objects and the size of the word that names them. Nevertheless, iconicity persists as a strategy in a few 6 year-olds, on the brink of attending literacy class. Considering these results, we discuss the implications of choosing a literacy method, either favoring global reading or grapheme-phoneme decoding, specially for the kids who tend to preserve the iconic strategy longer.

This article aims to review a current and comprehensive overview of the studies dedicated to the investigation of the neurocognitive basis of reading acquisition. Even though reading is an activity established from socio-cultural pressures, resulting from explicitly arduous learned processes and formal instruction, the literature indicates that it learning takes place under natural cognitions, similar to what happens in the auditory processing of speech signals. Here, we discuss these perspectives, seeking to signal how these neuroscience and psycholinguistics discoveries can and should impact the teaching of reading making this learning more effective, in order to contribute to the construction of the individual's autonomy and citizenship.

RESUMO Objetivo Verificar os benefícios do Treinamento de Memória de Trabalho em DVD para idosos. Método Participaram do estudo 16 voluntários com idade superior a 60 anos (média etária de 67,43 anos) sem queixas de perda auditiva, problemas neurológicos ou psiquiátricos, avaliados inicialmente com o MEEM e posteriormente com a avaliação específica para memória de trabalho. Em seguida, os quatro participantes que não tinham disponibilidade para comparecer à Universidade formaram o grupo controle e os doze restantes foram incluídos no grupo experimental. O grupo experimental foi exposto aos três DVDs que compõem o primeiro conjunto de exercícios e reavaliado com o teste específico para memória de trabalho em intervalos regulares. O grupo controle também foi submetido às reavaliações nos mesmos períodos do grupo experimental. Resultados Enquanto o grupo controle não apresentou qualquer alteração nas avaliações, o desempenho no teste de memória do grupo experimental melhorou significativamente após a apresentação dos DVDs. Além disso, o grupo experimental relatou os benefícios do treinamento para suas atividades cotidianas. Conclusão O estudo demonstra os benefícios do Treinamento de Memória de Trabalho em DVD para idosos, que se revela uma ferramenta promissora para novos estudos longitudinais com populações maiores. Methods Sixteen volunteers aged over 60 years (67.43 years on average), without hearing loss complaint nor neurological or psychiatric disorders participated in this study. All participants were evaluated by the MMSE and a dedicated working memory assessment. Among these, four participants, unable to go to the University formed the control group, while the other twelve were included in the experimental group. The participants in the experimental group were exposed to the first three DVDs with exercises, having been periodically reassessed by the dedicated working memory assessment. The control group participants were submitted only to the reassessments at the same periods as the experimental group. Results The assessments of the control group did not present any changes, while those in the experimental group significantly improved their results after exposure to the DVDs. Moreover, the experimental group participants reported the benefits of the training for their daily life activities. Conclusion The present study demonstrates the benefits of the Working Memory Training on DVD for the elderly. These results indicate that the cognitive working memory training may be a promising tool for new longitudinal studies with larger populations.

We argue that this effect is not related to aspectual features, and that event-duration semantics is accessed during Sentence Processing. We ran a self-paced reading experiment in Brazilian Portuguese whose sentences contain events with an average duration of a few minutes. These sentences were inserted in durative contexts that became the experiment’s conditions following a Latin Square design: control condition (minutes), subtractive (seconds), iterative (hours) and habitual (days). Higher RTs were measured at the critical segments of all experimental conditions, except for the habitual context. The results corroborated our hypothesis while defying the psychological reality of habitual coercion. To better observe the habitual coercion condition, we now present a reanalysis of Sampaio et al. (2014) data. The present analysis confirms the results of our tests. Aplicamos um experimento de leitura auto-monitorada em Português Brasileiro, cujas sentenças contém eventos com duração média de alguns minutos. Estas sentenças foram inseridas em quatro condições durativas, seguindo uma distribuição fatorial (quadrado latino):condição controle (minutos), subtrativa (segundos), iterativa (horas) e habitual (dias). Nossos resultados indicam maiores RTs nos segmentos críticos das condições experimentais, exceto em relação a condição habitual. Esses resultados confirmam nossa hipótese, porém, põem em cheque a realidade psicológica da coerção habitual. Assim, para melhor observar os efeitos dessa condição, procedemos uma reanálise dos dados de Sampaio et al. (2014), que finalmente veio confirmar o resultado de nosso teste.

RESUMO: Esse artigo tem como propósito revisar os fundamentos, hipóteses, objetivos e propostas de implementações computacionais da Gramática Gerativa, sob uma ótica interdisciplinar que inclui além da Linguística, a Epistemologia, a Neurociência da Linguagem, a Biologia e a Evolução das Espécies. O artigo defende que, não obstante as atualizações que a Gramática Gerativa assumiu em seus 60 anos de existência, há uma coerência profunda das suas ideias principais, o que torna as muitas alterações e versões hipóteses de trabalho legítimas para um mesmo corpo teórico. PALAVRAS-CHAVE: Gramática Gerativa; computação sintática; fundamentos teóricos; Além da Adequação Explicativa; evolução das espécies.

International audience; Hierarchical or indirect recursion can be found in different domains of human language and thus, it has been claimed to be the only part of language that is specific to humans (Hauser, Chomsky, and Fitch 2002). However, in the past decade, both the claims that, recursion is the central component of the “narrow faculty of language” and that, it should be present in all languages have been the object of intense debate (cf. Pinker & Jackendoff, 2005; Everett, 2005). This debate triggered the exploration of new frontiers in the examination of embedded structures, which have been examined in acquisition and in processing and have been shown to be implemented through a wide array of linguistic resources in different languages. This paper presents an acoustic description and a neuro-psycholinguistic analysis (ERP/EEG) of an uncommon cognitive device to embed relative clauses. It is implemented in Karajá, a Macro-Je language spoken in Central Brazil, which uses pitch accent to signal relativization: (i) [tori do‟rode] „the white man arrived‟ versus (ii) [tori doro‟de] „the white man who arrived‟, first described in Ribeiro as stress shift (2006). The major interest in studying this phenomenon is because in Karajá, more than structuring envelopes for acts of speech, prosody codes directly onto the central syntactic algorithm of recursion. We found evidence in favor of a stronger facilitation to process a coordinated structure than a recursive structure. We found smaller RTs and amplitudes in the EEG related to the coordinated conditions versus the embedding conditions. Also, it seems that even though embedding is harder to launch, hierarchical structuring makes it easier to process in the third embedding, when comprehenders learn they are in an embedding mode. Coordination, on the other hand, being a default, is easier to launch, but it seems to become progressively harder as it does not benefit from hierarchical structuring.

O presente estudo avalia se o modo como acessamos as palavras é influenciado pela estrutura do léxico; mais especificamente, se há diferenças na forma como reconhecemos palavras simples e compostas do Português Brasileiro (PB). Para isto, aplicamos dois testes de acesso lexical a 80 participantes para determinar (i) se há diferenças nos tempos de reação e acurácia de resposta entre palavras simples e compostas, e (ii) se essas diferenças se correlacionam com a frequência de uso dessas palavras. Os resultados do experimento 1 fornecem evidências para ocorrências de decomposição no reconhecimento de palavras compostas do PB. No entanto, as latências de resposta das palavras de altas frequências dos experimentos 1 e 2 confirmam as predições de modelos de listagem plena. Para explicar esses resultados sugerimos um mecanismo de acesso lexical em rota dupla, em que cada tipo de palavra é acessado mais rapidamente dependendo da sua frequência e de propriedades morfológicas. The present study aims at verifying whether the way we access words is influenced by the lexicon structure of the language; more specifically, whether there is any difference in the way we recognize Brazilian Portuguese (BP) single and compound words. Two lexical decision tests were applied to eighty participants to determine (i) whether there are differences in mean reaction times and response accuracy between simple and compound words, and (ii) whether these differences correlate with the frequency of use of these words. Results of Experiment 1 provide evidence that there is a role for decomposition in the recognition of BP compounds. However, latencies of high frequency words in lexical decision tests 1 and 2 are consistent with predictions of full listing models. To explain these results we suggest a double route mechanism of lexical access, by which each word type will be more quickly accessed depending on its frequency and morphological properties.

Resumo: Este artigo trata do processamento de sentenças com interrogativas-QU de sujeito e de objeto em português brasileiro1 (PB). Especificamente, investigou-se a Assimetria Sujeito-Objeto nesse tipo de sentença, partindo-se de resultados anteriores com a técnica de leitura automonitorada (OLIVEIRA; MAIA, 2010; OLIVEIRA, 2013). Foram utilizadas as técnicas de rastreamento ocular (eyetracking) e eletroencefalografia (EEG) como ferramentas de diagnóstico do processamento linguístico em tempo real. O objetivo era buscar evidências sobre o modus operandi do parser durante o processamento das funções de sujeito e de objeto em sentenças interrogativas-QU no PB e verificar se há discrepâncias entre as técnicas utilizadas. Os resultados revelam diferenças interessantes, permitindo discernir os níveis de análise representacional, algorítmico e implementacional, na direção da clássica proposta de Marr (1982). Abstract: This article deals with the processing of subject and object WH-sentences of Brazilian Portuguese (BP). Specifically, it investigates the subject/object asymmetry in this type of sentence, following previous results using self-paced reading technique (OLIVEIRA; MAIA, 2010; OLIVEIRA, 2013). Eyetracking and electroencephalography (EEG) techniques were used as diagnostic tools for real-time linguistic processing. The goal was to find evidence of the modus operandi of the parser during the processing of subject and object syntactic functions in Brazilian Portuguese WH-sentences and verify if there are discrepancies between the techniques. The results allow discerning the levels of representational, algorithmic and implementation analysis, in the direction of the classical proposal of Marr (1982).

A recursividade, um cálculo implementado através da inserção de um constituinte dentro de outro, é amplamente reconhecido como uma capacidade cognitiva fundamental. Uma discussão interessante sobre o tema gira em torno da especificidade do domínio dessa cognição, ou seja, se ela está nas bases da capacidade de linguagem ou se é parte integral de recursos cognitivos gerais e é posta em ação na linguagem como um fator externo. Naturalmente, é primordial para essa discussão saber quando a recursividade é adquirida. Este estudo quer contribuir para esta discussão ampla, concentrando-se na aquisição de uma instância recursiva - a dos sintagmas preposicionais (PPs) em Português do Brasil. Os resultados apontam para a faixa etária de 4 anos como sendo a idade em que a recursividade começa a ser processada de forma significativa.

Taking into consideration differences in syntactic configurations underlying the verb-complement merge operation, this experiment investigates three series of sentences containing incongruous and congruous merges. The aim is to relate syntactic specificities to the resulting ERP morphologies. Conditions tested required three types of computations: local merge, local merge depending on inheritance of semantic properties from an antecedent and merge performed at distance (WH-displacement). A total of 240 experimental sentences (80 for each condition) and 240 distractor sentences were generated in Brazilian Portuguese. Using a kinetic presentation protocol, sentences were displayed to each of 25 subjects, while the raw EEG was acquired at 20 derivations. Signal processing techniques were used to estimate the individual ERP for each anatomic region. Series 1 involving strictly local computations resulted in classic parietal N400s, whereas the inheritance stimuli elicited two peaks in the parietal and central region ERPs. Series 3—WH-displacement—presented earlier and more salient cortical responses. The different ERP morphologies resulting from each condition are consistent with a model in which language processing results from task-specific computations involving different neurological subsystems.

Resumo: A referencialidade e um topico que sempre renova o interesse da linguistica teorica e experimental. Isso porque as referencias sao recursos fundamentais das linguas naturais que estabelecem uma relacao entre a lingua no cerebro e as coisas do mundo la fora. Este experimento investiga duas condicoes referentes a mecanismos de referencialidade: uma relaciona-se a um NP nao especifico na posicao do sujeito e a outra se relaciona a um NP que denota tipo influenciado por um contexto especial de Conhecimento do Mundo. A comparacao entre as duas condicoes nas suas versoes congruente e incongruente revelou que a Condicao do Conhecimento do Mundo apresentou um ERP (N400) com latencia mais curta. Ja que as sentencas sao percebidas em uma ordem linear e que o sujeito em portugues (lingua SVO) vem na frente, aqui se propoe que o acesso ao sujeito pragmaticamente saliente na sua posicao sentenca-inicial abre, logo de inicio, uma moldura pragmatica e pode restringir a selecao no verbo-complemento, fazendo com que o merge verbo-objeto se de de forma mais rapida. Isso pode explicar porque o N400 relacionado aos estimulos do Conhecimento do Mundo apareceu mais cedo do que na Condicao de Controle. Adicionalmente, encontrouse um ERP positivo em torno dos 600 ms apenas presente nos estimulos da Condicao de Conhecimento do Mundo e ausente na Condicao de Controle. A interpretacao deste achado e que o pleno acesso ao conteudo pragmatico que esta no sujeito so ocorre apos o merge do complemento ao verbo. Abstract: Referring is a permanently hot topic in theoretical and experimental linguistics since references establish the fundamental relationship between parts of language in the brain and things out there in the world. This experiment investigates two conditions pertaining to reference mechanisms: one relates to a generic NP in the subject position and the other to an NP that is influenced by a special World Knowledge context. The comparison between the two conditions in their congruous and incongruous versions depicts a shorter latency for the N400 ERPs of the World Knowledge stimuli. Since linguistic input gradually reaches the reader from left to right, we propose that the access to a pragmatically salient subject in its sentence-initial position, by opening a window into World Knowledge, may restrict selections in the verb-complement merge more speedily than pragmatically unmarked subjects. This may explain why the N400 related to the World Knowledge stimuli appeared earlier than that of the Control Condition. Additionally, we found a later positive ERP around the 600ms only present in the World Knowledge stimuli and absent in the Control condition. The interpretation of this finding is that full access to the pragmatic contents of the subject only takes place after the verb complement merge. O Transtorno do Déficit de Atenção/Hiperatividade (TDAH) é o diagnóstico psiquiátrico mais frequente entre crianças com problemas de aprendizagem. Os sujeitos com TDAH apresentam problemas de memória operacional, portanto, levantamos a hipótese de que o grupo com TDAH não apresentaria o mesmo desempenho em tarefas de leitura que o grupo controle. Realizamos cinco experimentos psicolinguísticos, utilizando metodologia on-line, com o objetivo de diferenciar o processamento da leitura do processamento metalinguístico e, desta forma, especificar a natureza da dificuldade dos portadores de TDAH. Ambos os grupos obtiveram índices de acertos similares, porém as latências foram significativamente maiores para o grupo de sujeitos com TDAH, demonstrando que eles têm a capacidade de chegar a um mesmo resultado, porém necessitam de mais tempo do que o grupo controle. Este resultado sugere que pode haver um problema de processamento da linguagem intrínseco ao TDAH. Attention-Deficits/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is the most frequent psychiatric diagnosis in children with learning disorders. Individuals with ADHD usually present working memory difficulties. We raise the hypothesis that people with ADHD wouldn't have the same performance in reading tasks, compared to a control group. Five psycholinguistic experiments using on-line methodology were applied. The aim was to distinguish between the processing of reading and metalinguistic processing, in order to identify the nature of the linguistic impairments in ADHD volunteers. Both groups obtained similar accuracy rates, but latencies were significantly higher for the ADHD group than for the controls, demonstrating that ADHD subjects are able to achieve the same results, but that they need more time than the control group. This result suggests that there is a language processing problem intrinsic to ADHD individuals.

The N400 component is the most famous ERP component in linguistic studies. It has a negative amplitude peak at approximately 400ms after stimulus onset. It has been reported in the last 30 years in connection with the attempt of the verb to integrate its complement. It is also related to lexical access in general and to participants’ response when incoming words do not match predictable candidates in online processing. This study focuses on the sensitivity of the N400 to early information from outside of the verb-complement scope, (contained in an adjunct in the left periphery of the sentence). Using supporting adjunct information as a condition, this study tries to unveil the sensitivity of the N400 to data that is not part of the core structure of the event. Our hypothesis is that the information in the adjunct position is not taken into account in the same time-frame of the event and, indeed, the analyses involving several pre-tests with varying SOAs, showed no difference in the N400 component for sentences with relevant adjunct information when compared to those with irrelevant adjunct information. ************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************ Em que contexto o contexto importa? Um estudo de ERP com sentencas em portugues brasileiro Resumo: O componente N400 e o ERP mais famoso em estudos eletrofisiologicos da lilnguagem. O N400 tem amplitude negativa aproximadamente aos 400ms apos estimulacao. Nos ultimos 30 anos, o N400 tem sido relacionado ao esforco de o verbo de integrar o seu complemento. Ele tambem esta relacionado com o acesso lexical e a frustacao da previsibilidade do falante ao antecipar a proxima palavra durante o processamento online. Procuramos explorar a sensibilidade do N400 a informacao precoce fora da arena verbo-complemento (um adjunto na periferia esquerda da sentenca). Utilizando informacao acessoria, como condicao, este estudo tentara desvendar a sensibilidade do N400 para dados que nao sao parte do evento. A hipotese e que as informacoes na posicao de adjunto nao seriam levadas em conta no mesmo espaco de tempo da informacao do evento. De fato, as analises, que envolveram varios pre-testes com diferentes SOAs, nao mostraram diferenca nos parâmetros do N400 para frases com informacoes relevantes no adjunto comparados aqueles com informacao irre- levante. An interesting fact about language cognition is that stimulation involving incongruence in the merge operation between verb and complement has often been related to a negative event-related potential (ERP) of augmented amplitude and latency of ca. 400 ms - the N400. Using an automatic ERP latency and amplitude estimator to facilitate the recognition of waves with a low signal-to-noise ratio, the objective of the present study was to study the N400 statistically in 24 volunteers. Stimulation consisted of 80 experimental sentences (40 congruous and 40 incongruous), generated in Brazilian Portuguese, involving two distinct local verb-argument combinations (nominal object and pronominal object series). For each volunteer, the EEG was simultaneously acquired at 20 derivations, topographically localized according to the 10-20 International System. A computerized routine for automatic N400-peak marking (based on the ascendant zero-cross of the first waveform derivative) was applied to the estimated individual ERP waveform for congruous and incongruous sentences in both series for all ERP topographic derivations. Peak-to-peak N400 amplitude was significantly augmented (P < 0.05; one-sided Wilcoxon signed-rank test) due to incongruence in derivations F3, T3, C3, Cz, T5, P3, Pz, and P4 for nominal object series and in P3, Pz and P4 for pronominal object series. The results also indicated high inter-individual variability in ERP waveforms, suggesting that the usual procedure of grand averaging might not be considered a generally adequate approach. Hence, signal processing statistical techniques should be applied in neurolinguistic ERP studies allowing waveform analysis with low signal-to-noise ratio.
