As the CT scans for this study specifically targeted tracheal morphology, visualization of internal morphology of organs and internal structures was generally not possible. Therefore, determining the specific tissues supplied by a given trachea is challenging. However, some structures appear to have a particular tracheal morphology, such as muscle fibers and some other structures, and the detail afforded in the Anisolabis scan allows for some possibilities. For example, A 3-VLT-Vi begins by branching from A 3- VLT and proceeding anteriorly. Just before reaching the anterior end of the abdomen; however, A 3-VLT-Vi splits into several smaller tracheae that turn posteriorly to form a cone, most likely the tracheation of a portion of the alimentary canal, possibly the proventriculus. Additional detail is observable in the terminalia, specifically the cerci. As mentioned previously, extensive tracheation of A 7 and A 8 is for musculature controlling the forceps, and two tracheae are seen extending into the cerci. A 8-DLT-Cr is supplied by A 8- DLT, which arcs ventrad and posteriorly into each side of the forceps, and a second trachea A 8-VLT-Cr from A 8- VLT, reaching basically straight posteriad to cross over A 8-DLT-Cr into the cerci. DESCRIPTION: HEAD: H-DCT and H-VCT similar diameter; H-DCTs curve inward slightly such that left and right tracheae nearly touch before turning laterally outward on entry to head capsule; H-VCTs both proceed straight into head. Euborellia (Anisolabididae: Anisolabidinae) is one of the most speciose genera of earwigs (Dermaptera), and its species-level classification is difficult. To settle the classification of brachypterous species with abbreviated tegmina recorded from East and Southeast Asia, we examined the morphology and reproductive isolation of three tentative Euborellia species, and analyzed the DNA barcoding region of the mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase subunit I (COI) gene. The observed complete reproductive isolation among the three Euborellia taxa and considerable differentiation in the COI sequences clearly show that each should be treated as a separate species. Based on morphology, distribution and the DNA sequence, we identify Euborellia sp. 1 of Malaysia as E. annulata (Fabricius), a circumtropical cosmopolitan with no records of a fully winged form. Samples from Ioto Island (= Iwo-jima Island: Ogasawara Islands, southern Japan) were also identified as this species. Euborellia sp. 3, from the main islands of Japan, was generally larger and lacked a Y-shaped pigmented area on the penis lobe, which is characteristic of Euborellia sp. 1. We propose reinstating E. pallipes (Shiraki) as the oldest name for this taxon. Euborellia sp. 2, even the brachypterous form, can be distinguished from these two species by its paler coloration (particularly the femora), ecarinate post-abdomen, and the shape of the male genitalia (parameres). We tentatively identify this species as E. philippinensis Srivastava based on the morphology of the brachypterous form, although the macropterous form cannot be distinguished from E. femoralis (Dohrn).

Insecticide poisoning is one of the causes of death in wild birds. One of the insecticides that are often used is a pyrethroid. This study aims to determine the succession of insects in birds intoxicated by pyrethroid pesticide. This research was conducted in Dramaga campus, IPB University, Bogor, Indonesia. One quail (Coturnix coturnix japonica) was used as a control which was killed by manual neck dislocation, and one bird was treated orally treated with acute dose pyrethroid pesticide. Cadavers are placed in insect traps until they reach the skeletal stage of decomposition. Insects that enter the trap are collected every 6 hours for 24 hours, from the first day until the whole process of decomposition of the carrion reaches the skeletal stage. Then the insects are identified and counted. The results showed that the cadaver decomposition process in the treatment group took longer than the control group. In the control group, insects arrived for approximately 138 hours after the cadaver was placed, while the treatment group took approximately 324 hours. The types of insects in these two groups are relatively the same, namely flies (Order Diptera: Calliphoridae, Muscidae), cockroaches (Order Dictyoptera: Blattidae and Blaberidae) and Sarcophagidae), beetles (Order Coleoptera: Scarabidae), ants (Order Hymenoptera: Formicidae), earwigs (Order Dermaptera: Anisolabididae). Chrysomya megachepala was the dominant insect over the others and was always present from the early stages to post-decay in control and pyrethroid treatment.

A new species of the genus Epilandex Hebard, 1927, Epilandex vignai sp. nov., is described based on material from Sulawesi, Indonesia. The habitus and diagnostic characteristics are illustrated, and the taxonomic position is discussed. An identification key for all recognised Epilandex species is provided.

A new species of the genus Mongolabis, M. bochkovi sp. n., is described from northern Vietnam. A detailed morphological description and notes on the biology of the new species are given. Diagnosis of the genus Mongolabis is emended. Mongolabis interjacens (Anisyutkin, 1998), comb. n., M. incrassatus (Anisyutkin, 1998), comb. n., M. incurvatus (Anisyutkin, 1998), comb. n., M. fusoideus (Anisyutkin, 1998), comb. n., and M. dealbatus (Anisyutkin, 1998), comb. n., originally described in the genus Anisolabis, are transferred to Mongolabis.

Synthetic insecticide application is one tactic for reducing boll weevil, Anthonomus grandis grandis Boheman (Coleoptera: Curculionidae), infestations during the cotton, Gossypium hirsutum L., reproductive stage. We assessed the susceptibility of the boll weevil and its natural enemies to ethiprole (mode of action 2B), a phenylpyrazole insecticide, and diagnostic concentrations of ethiprole indicative of boll weevil susceptibility. Differences in the lethal concentrations of ethiprole were calculated with susceptibility ratios based on LC50 ranging from 2.89- to 10.34-fold relative to a natural susceptible population. The lowest and the highest recommended field rates of ethiprole, 100 and 200 g a.i./ha, produced residues that caused 83.3% and 93.7% mortality of weevils caged with cotton leaves from field-treated plants for 8 d. We found that ethiprole was less toxic than fipronil to the boll weevil parasitoid Bracon vulgaris Ashmead (Hymenoptera: Braconidae) and to the red imported fire ant, Solenopsis invicta Buren (Hymenoptera: Formicidae), while fipronil was highly toxic to both. Adult earwigs, Euborellia annulipes Lucas (Dermaptera: Anisolabididae), were relatively tolerant to ethiprole and fipronil at the highest field rates. Pooled LC50-and LC95-concentrations of ethiprole calculated from studied populations were used as diagnostic for boll weevil mortality, and the outcome fitted to the expected mortality for boll weevil populations from different locations serving for further control failure assessment. Ethiprole appears to be suitable for boll weevil control with low impact on natural enemy communities.

This study aimed to determine the composition and relative abundance of soil insects associated with lucumo (Pouteria lucuma L.) trees growing in the agricultural fields of the Universidad Nacional Agraria La Molina in Lima, Peru. In total, 12 pitfall traps were installed in a 5-ha lucumo field and samples were collected on a weekly basis for approximately 4 months (March–June). Insects in each sample were separated into morphotypes, and the number of individuals in each morphotype and date of collection were recorded. The collected insects were then identified at the Entomology Museum laboratory in Lima through comparison with museum samples and with the help of identification keys. Individuals in the orders Orthoptera (families Acrididae and Gryllidae), Dermaptera (Anisolabididae), Coleoptera (Carabidae, Staphylinidae, Tenebrionidae, Scarabaeidae and Elateridae), Blattodea (Blatellidae) and Hymenoptera (Formicidae) were identified. Among the Coleoptera, Tetracha chilensis (Laporte, 1834) (Carabidae) was the most abundant species; furthermore, Staphylinidae of the subfamily Oxytelinae and the families Elateridae (Conoderus spp.), Tenebrionidae (Epitragopsis sp.) and Scarabaeidae (Ataenius sp.) were identified. Additional taxa identified were as follow: Gryllus assimilis (Fabricius, 1775) (Gryllidae) in Orthoptera, Euborellia annulipes (Lucas, 1847) (Anisolabididae) in Dermaptera and Linepithema spp. in Hymenoptera.

We investigated the effects of temperature on the functional response of Euborellia annulipes (Lucas) (Dermaptera: Anisolabididae) preying on Plutella xylostella (L.) (Lepidoptera: Plutellidae) larvae. Predation rate, type of functional response, attack rate (a'), handling time (T-h), and maximum predation rate (T/T-h) of the predator were estimated using seven prey densities and three thermal conditions. The functional response of E. annulipes to P. xylostella was temperature-dependent, type III under the lower temperatur (18 degrees C and 25 degrees C), and type II at 32 degrees C. We observed increasing values of a' in 25 degrees C and 32 degrees C, decreasing values of Th and highest T/T-h as the thermal condition increased. Our findings suggest that E. annulipes could be effective to control P. xylostella under different thermal conditions, however its predation behavior changes according to temperature variation. A new earwig species of Chelisoches Scudder, 1876, C. chongqingensis Ye & Chen sp. nov. is reported from Chongqin City of China. The new species is characterized by the distinct metallic luster on the elytra and by the pygidium shape of the female. Descriptions and illustrations of both the male and female of the new species are provided. Another species, Platylabia major Dohrn, 1867, is redescribed based on material collected from Guangdong and Fujian provinces.

Four new fossil earwig nymphs, Hirtidiplatys cardiophyllus gen. et sp. nov., Acanthodiplatys leptocercus gen. et sp. nov., and Tytthodiplatys ortholabis sp. nov. in Diplatyidae, Robustipygia calvata gen. et sp. nov. in Pygidicranidae, and one specimen unassigned to a genus which might belong to Anisolabididae, are described and figured from the mid-Cretaceous amber of Myanmar. Hirtidiplatys cardiophyllus gen. et sp. nov. and A. leptocercus gen. et sp. nov. represent the second and third earliest records of Diplatyidae, and are distinguished from other recorded nymphs in Cretaceous amber and modern lineages by the structure of their antennae and legs.

Based on samples collected during surveys of Brazilian cave fauna, seven earwig species are reported: Cylindrogaster cavernicola Kamimura, sp. n., Cylindrogaster sp. 1, Cylindrogaster sp. 2, Euborellia janeirensis, Euborellia brasiliensis, Paralabellula dorsalis, and Doru luteipes, as well as four species identified to the (sub)family level. To date, C. cavernicola Kamimura, sp. n. has been recorded only from cave habitats (but near entrances), whereas the other four organisms identified at the species level have also been recorded from non-cave habitats. Wings and female genital structures of Cylindrogaster spp. (Cylindrogastrinae) are examined for the first time. The genital traits, including the gonapophyses of the 8th abdominal segment shorter than those of the 9th segement, and venation of the hind wings of Cylindrogastrinae correspond to those of the members of Diplatyidae and not to Pygidicranidae. This is the first synopsis of cave-dwelling earwigs of Brazil, one of the most species-rich areas of Dermaptera in the world.

An update on the taxonomy and geographic distribution of Iberian Anisolabididae (Dermaptera) is provided. Former catalogues reported in the Iberian Peninsula three genera of Anisolabididae: Aborolabis, Anisolabis, and Euborellia. A revision of 487 specimens of Iberian and North African Anisolabidoidea permit to exclude the genus Aborolabis from the Iberian fauna, the re-assignation of inland Euborellia annulipes Iberian records to Euborellia moesta, and the exclusion of Aborolabis angulifera from Northwestern Africa. Examination of type materials of Aborolabis mordax and Aborolabis cerrobarjai allows to propose the treatment of A. cerrobarjai as a junior synonym of A. mordax. The diagnostic characters of Euborellia hispanica are included within the local variability found in E. moesta. I propose that E. hispanica should be treated as a junior synonym of E. moesta.

Dermaptera (earwigs) from the Anisolabididae family may be important for pest control but their taxonomy and status in Australia is poorly studied. Here we used taxonomic information to assess the diversity of southern Australian Anisolabididae and then applied cox1 barcodes as well as additional gene fragments (mitochondrial and nuclear) to corroborate classification and assess the monophyly of the putative genera. Anisolabididae morphospecies fell into two genera, Anisolabis Fieber and Gonolabis Burr, based on paramere morphology. Combinations of paramere and forceps morphology distinguished seven morphospecies, which were further supported by morphometric analyses. The morphospecies were corroborated by barcode data, all showed within-species genetic distance &lt, 4% and between-species genetic distance &gt, 10%. Molecular phylogenies did not support monophyly of putative genera nor clades based on paramere shape, instead pointing to regional clades distinguishable by forceps morphology. This apparent endemism needs to be further tested by sampling of earwig diversity outside of agricultural production regions but points to a unique regional insect fauna potentially important in pest control.

Dermaptera is a relatively small order of free-living insects that typically feed on detritus and other plant material. However, two earwig lineages - Arixeniidae and Hemimeridae - are epizoic on Cheiromeles bats and Beamys and Cricetomys rats respectively. Both of these epizoic families are comprised of viviparous species. The monophyly of these epizoic lineages and their placement within dermapteran phylogeny has remained unclear. A phylogenetic analyses was performed on a diverse sample of 47 earwig taxa for five loci (18S rDNA, 28S rDNA, COI, Histone 3, and Tubulin Alpha I). Our results support two independent origins of the epizoic lifestyle within Dermaptera, with Hemimeridae and Arixeniidae each derived from a different lineage of Spongiphoridae. Our analyses places Marava, a genus of spongiphorids that includes free-living but viviparous earwigs, as sister group to Arixeniidae, suggesting that viviparity evolved prior to the shift to the epizoic lifestyle. Additionally, our results support the monophyly of Forficulidae and Chelisochidae and the paraphyly of Labiduridae, Pygidicranidae, Spongiphoridae, and Anisolabididae.

Extensive research was undertaken from 2010 to 2013 that focused upon the invertebrate fauna occurring in greenhouses of the botanical and zoological gardens in Czech Republic and Slovakia. Occurrences of the alien earwig, Euborellia annulipes (Lucas, 1847), were found in three greenhouses in Czech Republic, and these findings are the first to document established populations in Central European greenhouses. The spectrum of foods consumed by E. annulipes was studied with a post-mortem analysis of the gastrointestinal tract contents. Based on the analyses, we can conclude that E. annulipes is an omnivorous species that, in greenhouse conditions, predominantly feeds on plant tissue. Despite the fact that E. annulipes also feeds on invertebrates, our study points to a small proportion of such food in its diet under free-choice conditions in greenhouses. According to the large portion of plant tissues in the species’ diet, it could potentially be a pest of cultivated plants, especially seedlings and young plants with soft tissue.

Herons (Ardeidae) frequently breed in inland forests and provide organic material in the form of carcasses of prey (that they drop) and chicks (that die) to the forest floor. Such allochthonous inputs of organic materials are known to increase arthropod populations in forests. However, the exact species that show numerical responses to allochthonous inputs in heron breeding colonies remains unclear. Very few studies have clarified which factors determine numerical responses in individual species. We used pitfall and baited traps to compare the densities of arthropods between forest patches in heron breeding colonies (five sites) and areas outside of colonies (five sites) in central Japan. The density of all arthropods was not significantly different between colonies and non-colony areas. However, significant differences between colonies and non-colony areas were found in four arthropod groups. Earwigs (Dermaptera: Anisolabididae), hister beetles (Coleoptera: Histeridae), and carrion beetles (Coleoptera: Silphidae) were more abundant in colonies, while ants (Hymenoptera: Formicidae) were less abundant in colonies. We detected numerical responses to heron breeding in two earwig, one histerid, five silphid, and one ant species. Chick and prey carcasses from herons may have directly led to increases in consumer populations such as earwigs, histerids, and silphids in colonies, while microenvironmental changes caused by heron breeding may have reduced ant abundance. In the Silphidae, five species showed numerical responses to allochthonous inputs, and the other two species did not. Numerical responses in individual species may have been determined by life history traits such as reproductive behaviour.

This study reports on four species of mites in the family Histiostomatidae phoretic on the Australian giant earwig, Titanolabis colossea (Dohrn) (Dermaptera: Anisolabididae). The species included are Histiostoma australiense Mahunka 1975, H. feroniarum (Dufour 1839), H. humiditatis (Vitzthum 1927) and H. titanolabi sp. nov. The previously unknown adults of H. australiense are described from specimens reared in laboratory culture.

Dermaptera includes the ‘lower’ subgroups Pygidicranidae, Diplatyidae, and Karschiellidae, the more derived ‘higher’ Dermaptera Apachyidae, Labiduridae, Anisolabididae, Chelisochidae, Forficulidae, and Spongiphoridae (the three latter forming the Eudermaptera), and the epizoic Hemimeridae and Arixeniidae. The female genitalic region of Dermaptera shows a wide morphological range. As documented previously, it is highly complex and morphologically diverse in the ‘lower’ families. In the ‘higher’ and the epizoic Dermaptera it is strongly modified and reduced, but morphological data are sparse, and entirely lacking for Eudermaptera. Herein the female genitalic region is described for six species of Forficulidae (Forficula auricularia, Anechura bipunctata), Chelisochidae (Chelisoches morio), and Spongiphoridae (Sphingolabis hawaiiensis, Spongovostox semiflavus, Marava arachidis). S. hawaiiensis is ovoviviparous or viviparous, M. arachidis is ovoviviparous, the remaining species are oviparous (no data on S. semiflavus). The female genitalic region is overall quite similar in these eudermapterans, but there are differences in many details. Morphology is compared among these species and a list of 27 characters is compiled; this forms the first step towards using female genitalic characters in forthcoming phylogenetic studies and taxonomic work on Eudermaptera. The female genitalia show different specialisations in the two sampled (ovo)viviparous species, including the presence (M. arachidis) vs. absence (S. hawaiiensis) of a spermatheca. This indicates that (ovo)vivipary evolved independently in these taxa. Morphology in the eudermapterans is briefly compared with that in ‘lower’ dermapterans, and the morphological interpretation of the eudermapteran gonopore and genitalic sclerites is discussed.

Provisioning the young is an important form of insect parental care and is believed to improve the survival and growth of the young. Anisolabis maritima Bonelli (Dermaptera: Anisolabididae) is a cosmopolitan species of earwig that shows sub-social behavior in which the females tend clutches of eggs in soil burrows. The defensive and provisioning behaviors of these females were examined in this study. When disturbed, maternal individuals abandoned the nest less than non-maternal individuals. Females brought food to the nest after their eggs hatched, and the survival of the nymphs was increased by provisioning. Even when mothers were removed, providing food to the nymphs increased survival as well as when the nymphs were provisioned by the mother. These results show that A. maritima mothers provision the nymphs and that this provisioning improves their survival.

Giles' (1974) claims that the Hemimerina have closer affinities with the Forficulina-Arixenuna complex than with any other orthopteroid order is confirmed by detailed studies of his own data. The Arixenuna are shown to have close affinities with the Labudae within the Forficulina. The Forficulina and the Hemimerina have more distant affinities than most previous authors have suggested. The Forficulina is composed of two sister groups, which are each given infra-ordinal status, namely the Pygidicranidea for the pygidicranid earwigs and the Forficulidea for the rest. The Forficulidea is seen to be composed of two mutual sister groups at super-family level, namely the Labioidea for the Carcinophoridae, Labudae and the Arixenudae and the Forficuloidea for the Labiduridae (sensu stricto), the Chelisochidae and the Forficulidae. Within the Labioidea, the Labudae and the Arixenudae are seen as possible sister groups. The classification of the lower taxonomic levels along Hennigian lines is a matter for further investigation.

Antennae with 21 antennomeres (in holotype antennae incomplete, with 19 antennomeres); antennomere 1 long, narrowed basally, widened terminally, as long as antennomeres 2���4 combined; antennomere 2 transverse, wider than long; antennomere 3 longer than antennomere 4. Antennomeres 2���6 cylindrical, other antennomeres conical. All antennomeres pubescent. Pronotum (Fig. 1) smooth, a little longer than wide, parallel-sided; anterior margin nearly straight; lateral margins straight; posterior margin convex. Median sulcus fine but distinct. Meso- and metanotum transverse, wider than long, smooth, mesonotum posteriorly convex, metanotum broadly emarginate. Median sulcus visible on mesonotum and metanotum. Sternal plates typical for genus. Tegmina and wings entirely absent. Legs comparatively long, uniformly yellowish; femora stout; tibiae covered with thick and fine setae; length of metatarsomere 1 nearly equal to metatarsomeres 2 and 3 combined. Abdomen (Fig. 1) sparsely punctate. Tergites (with the exception of the ultimate tergite) convex, somewhat widened posteriorly; lateral glandular folds visible on tergites 3���4. Tergites 7���8 with a low blunt lateral longitudinal ridge, not developed in some specimens. Ultimate tergite transverse, sides convex, slightly narrowed posteriorly, and slightly depressed medially, with a visible median longitudinal furrow; lateral longitudinal ridge rugose, posterior margin in middle slightly concave. Penultimate sternite narrowed posteriorly, with rounded, weakly emarginated posterior margin (Fig. 2). Pygidium flat. Male forceps asymmetrical, right branch more curved in distal fourth than left branch; both branches subcontiguous and stout at base, gradually tapering apically, nearly straight in basal two-thirds, followed by a slight curve inwards; apices gently hooked, inner margin finely crenulated, dorsally trigonal in basal half, depressed posteriorly. Genitalia (Figs. 3���6) with short parameres, 1.2 times longer than wide, broadened in middle and narrowed apically, external margin convex, internal margin gently emarginated in basal fourth. Longer genital lobe, 1.8 times longer than length of paramere, with two apical, weakly sclerotized denticulated pads (Fig. 5). Virga very long, approximately 2.5 times longer than the entire body (in holotype 4.6 cm). Tip of the virga and seminal vesicle as seen in Fig. 6. Female. (Figs. 7���9). Comparable to male in most characters except penultimate sternite is narrowed posteriorly, with posterior margin broadly rounded (Fig. 8); female forceps have simple and straight contiguous branches (Fig. 9). Eggs. (Fig. 10). White, smooth, ellipsoid, 1.2 mm length and 0.95 mm width. Nymphs. 1 st instar (Figs. 11���15) light brown to brown, head darker and shiny, mandibular palps light to yellow-brown, antennae light brown except antennomere 7 white or yellowish, legs light brown to brown, femora dark-striped, last tergite and forceps reddish brown. Head as wide as long, postfrontal and coronal sutures distinct. Pronotum and metanotum dorsal to median sulcus. Nymphs of instars 2���5 with many characteristics of 1 st instar nymph, but differin in body size and number of antennomeres (Table 1). In addition, the order of the white or yellowish antennomere differing: 2 nd instar, antennomere 10; 3 rd instar, 12 or 13; 4 th instar, 13 or 14; 5 th instar, 15 or 16. Nearctic species Euborellia peregrina (Mj��berg, 1904) and Euborellia antoni (Dohrn, 1864) are similar but differ in shape of the pronotum (widening posteriorly) and shape of the male forceps and genitalia. Etymology. The name ��� arcanum ��� is derived from Latin, meaning ���the mystery��� or ���the secret���, and reflects an unknown country of origin as well as manner of introduction into Europe.
