The Indochina Peninsula (ICP) has a critical effect in shaping the Asian summer monsoon (ASM). However, the seasonal responses of the ASM to the ICP are not fully understood. This study employs a 18 atmospheric general circulation model to examine the different contributions of the ICP's orography and land-sea contrast to the ASM during the early and late summer. Results indicate that the orographic effect increases South Asian rainfall and reduces the rainfall over the South China Sea (SCS) and North China in early summer, but its influence on monsoonal circulation and rainfall is limited to East Asia in late summer. The impact of the ICP's land-sea contrast is basically opposite in the two summer stages. With the presence of the ICP, SCS rainfall is enhanced but South Asian rainfall is weakened in early summer. In late summer, however, rainfall from the ICP to the northwestern Pacific is strikingly reduced, accompanied by intensified rainfall over South Asia. Relatively, the orographic effect seems to be more important in modulating the South Asian monsoon in early summer, while the land-sea contrast is dominant in strengthening the SCS monsoon and suppressing the northwest Pacific monsoon via the interaction between the induced local circulation and multilevel ASM subsystems. In late summer, the orographic effect on the ASM is much weaker compared to the land-sea contrast, which plays a critical role by shifting the subtropical high southwestward and through the "thermal adaption" feedback mechanism. The atmospheric circulation changes dramatically over a few days before and after the onset of the South Asian monsoon in spring. It is accompanied by the annual maximum surface heating over the Tibetan Plateau. We conducted two sets of experiments with a coupled general circulation model to compare the response of atmospheric circulation and wind-driven circulation in the Indian Ocean to the thermal forcing of the Tibetan Plateau before and after the monsoon onset. The results show that the Tibetan Plateau's thermal forcing modulates the sea surface temperature (SST) of the Indian Ocean and the meridional circulation in the upper ocean with opposite effects during these two stages. The thermal forcing of the Tibetan Plateau always induces a southwesterly response over the northern Indian Ocean and weakens the northeasterly background circulation before the monsoon onset. Subsequently, wind-evaporation feedback results in a warming SST response. Meanwhile, the oceanic meridional circulation shows offshore upwellings in the north and southward transport in the upper layer crossing the equator, sinking near 158S. After the monsoon onset, the thermal forcing of the Tibetan Plateau accelerates the background southwesterly and introduces a cooling response to the Indian Ocean SST. The response of oceanic meridional overturning circulation is limited to the north of the equator due to the location and structural evolution of the climatological local Hadley circulation. With an acceleration of the local Walker circulation, the underlying zonal currents also show corresponding changes, including a westerly drift along the equator, downwelling near Indonesia, offshore upwelling near Somalia, and a westward undercurrent. In this study, we systematically evaluate the intra-seasonal oscillation (ISO) associated with the Asian summer monsoon region in coupled general circulation models (GCMs) participating in the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) Fifth Assessment Report (AR5). Results show that most of the models simulate reasonable climatological circulation patterns in boreal summer, but insufficient precipitation over the Bay of Bengal (BOB) and western North Pacific summer monsoon region. Most models underestimate the variance of 12_90-day ISO mode but overestimate the percent variance of 12_90-day ISO accounting for raw precipitation anomalies. There remains a wide gap between model simulations and observations in the simulations of eastward-propagating ISO (30_80-day), while the models perform better in the northward propagation of the 30_80-day mode and the westward propagation of the 12_24-day mode. In addition, mean state circulation, atmospheric internal dynamic process, air-sea interactions and model resolution have varying degrees of impacts on the ISO simulation. The local Hadley and Walker cell biases are investigated in this study, which might relate well with the precipitation bias in models. Within the similar background of vertical easterly shear, few models have the capacity to simulate the equivalent barotropic vorticity to the north of the convection centre. Furthermore, many models have difficulty in reproducing the strong air_sea interactions over the Indian Ocean and the BOB. Our results indicate that simply improving model resolution is not an effective method to obtain more reasonable propagation characteristics of the ISO, especially for eastward propagation. This paper reviews progress in the study of Tibetan Plateau (TP) climate dynamics over the past decade. Several theoretical frameworks, including thermal adaptation and the TP sensible heat (SH) driving air-pump, have been developed to identify the mechanisms responsible for the circulation anomaly produced by thermal forcing of the TP. Numerical simulations demonstrate that the thermal effects of large-scale orography, including the Tibetan and Iranian Plateaus (TIP), are crucial for the formation of the East Asian and South Asian summer monsoons (SASM) because the surface SH of the TIP is the major driver of the water vapor transport required for the genesis of the north branch of the SASM.The large-scale orography of the TP affects the Asian climate through thermal forcing in spring and summer, and mechanical forcing in winter. The TP forcing can also influence the Asian summer monsoon (ASM) onset over the Bay of Bengal (BOB) by enhancing the BOB warm pool at the surface and by modulating the South Asian High (SAH) in the upper troposphere. On intra-seasonal timescales, the TP thermal forcing significantly modulates spring rainfall in southern China and generates the biweekly oscillation of the SAH in summer. Despite climate warming, the atmospheric heat source over the TP, particularly the spring SH, exhibits a clear weakening trend from the 1980s to 2000s. This weakening of the spring SH contributed to the anomalous 'dry in the north' and 'wet in the south' rainfall pattern observed over East China. Unprecedented changes in the climate and environment have been observed in the three poles, including the North Pole, the South Pole, and the Third Pole--Tibetan Plateau. Although considerable data have been collected and several observation networks have been built in these polar regions, the three poles are relatively data-scarce regions due to inaccessible data acquisition, high-cost labor, and difficult living environments. To address the obstacles to better understanding the unprecedented changes in the three poles and their effects on the global environment and humans, there is a pressing need for better data acquisition, curation, integration, service, and application to support fundamental scientific research and sustainable development for the three poles. CASEarth Poles, a project within the framework of the "CAS Big Earth Data Science Engineering" program of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, aims to construct a big data platform for the three poles. CASEarth Poles will be devoted to 1) breaking the bottleneck of polar data curation, integration, and sharing; 2) developing high-resolution remote sensing products over the three poles; 3) generating atmospheric reanalysis datasets for the polar regions; 4) exploring the synchronization, asynchronization, and teleconnection of the environmental changes in the three poles; 5) investigating the climate, water cycle, and ecosystem dynamics and the interactions among the multispheres in the polar regions and their global effects; and 6) supporting decision-making with regard to sea ice forecasting, infrastructure, and sustainable development in polar regions. This article provides a comprehensive review of the global monsoon that encompasses findings from studies of both modern monsoons and paleomonsoons. We introduce a definition for the global monsoon that incorporates its three-dimensional distribution and ultimate causes, emphasizing the direct drive of seasonal pressure system changes on monsoon circulation and depicting the intensity in terms of both circulation and precipitation. We explore the global monsoon climate changes across a wide range of timescales from tectonic to intraseasonal. Common features of the global monsoon are global homogeneity, regional diversity, seasonality, quasi-periodicity, irregularity, instability, and asynchroneity. We emphasize the importance of solar insolation, Earth orbital parameters, underlying surface properties, and land-air-sea interactions for global monsoon dynamics. We discuss the primary driving force of monsoon variability on each timescale and the relationships among dynamics on multiple timescales. Natural processes and anthropogenic impacts are of great significance to the understanding of future global monsoon behavior. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper attempts to provide some new understanding of the mechanical as well as thermal effects of the Tibetan Plateau (TP) on the circulation and climate in Asia through diagnosis and numerical experiments. The air column over the TP descends in winter and ascends in summer and regulates the surface Asian monsoon flow. Sensible heating on the sloping lateral surfaces appears from the authors’ experiments to be the major driving source. The retarding and deflecting effects of the TP in winter generate an asymmetric dipole zonal-deviation circulation, with a large anticyclone gyre to the north and a cyclonic gyre to the south. Such a dipole deviation circulation enhances the cold outbreaks from the north over East Asia, results in a dry climate in south Asia and a moist climate over the Indochina peninsula and south China, and forms the persistent rainfall in early spring (PRES) in south China. In summer the TP heating generates a cyclonic spiral zonal-deviation circulation in the lower troposphere, which converges toward and rises over the TP. It is shown that because the TP is located east of the Eurasian continent, in summertime the meridional winds and vertical motions forced by the Eurasian continental-scale heating and the TP local heating are in phase over the eastern and central parts of the continent.
