Introduction No studies have prospectively explored the association between the use of tobacco or cannabis use and the age of onset of depressive or anxiety symptoms, and no studies have identified the peak ages and ranges of onset of these symptoms among tobacco and/or cannabis users. Aims and Methods This is a secondary analysis of Texas Adolescent Tobacco and Marketing Surveillance System data, waves 9–14 (2019–20121). Participants were in 10th grade, 12th grade, and 2 years post-high school (HS) at baseline (wave 9). Interval-censoring multivariable Cox proportional hazards models were fit to assess differences in the estimated age of onset of depression and anxiety by tobacco and cannabis use while adjusting for covariates. Results We found that lifetime or ever cigarette, e-cigarette, and cannabis use had an increased risk of an earlier age of onset of depressive and anxiety symptoms across the three cohorts, and the youngest cohort was the most differentially impacted by substance use. Between ages 18 to 19 years in the 10th-grade cohort, between ages 20 to 21 years in the 12th-grade cohort, and between ages 22 to 23 years in the post-HS cohort, the estimated hazard function (or cumulative incidence) for reporting depressive and anxiety symptoms almost doubled among lifetime cigarette, e-cigarette, and cannabis users. Conclusions Tobacco and cannabis users should be screened for mental health problems at an earlier age, especially those aged 18 years and younger, and provided with age- and culturally appropriate resources to prevent or delay the onset of anxiety and/or depression symptoms. Implications The study’s findings indicate that tobacco and cannabis use is directly linked to the early onset of depressive and anxiety symptoms among youth. This highlights the significance of early screening and substance use interventions, particularly for youth aged 18 years and younger, as they are disproportionately affected by both substance use and mental health problems. School-based interventions that are age- and culturally appropriate hold promise as they enable youth to seek professional help early, and in a supportive environment. Intervening early in substance shows promise in reducing the likelihood of developing mental health problems at a young age.

In this exploratory analysis, we assessed whether nutrition modified the association between prenatal exposure to tobacco and childhood cognition/behavior among 366 Colorado-based mothers and their offspring (born ≥ 37 weeks with birthweights ≥ 2500 g). Interaction by folate ( 5 months, but not for shorter durations. Our findings support the need for smoking cessation campaigns throughout pregnancy and throughout the postpartum period breastfeeding to reduce neurobehavioral risks in the offspring.

Community health assessment and improvement planning processes (CHA/CHIP) are often challenged with developing health actions that reach across a large community, city or county and that incorporate locally informed issues and place-specific strategies. In co-learning about approaches for enhancing CHA/CHIP processes through youth stakeholder input, a partnership of academic and community leaders came together to create The Youth-Led Community Health Learning Initiative (YLCHLI), a 1-year pilot initiative aimed at identifying health needs and assets in partnership with youth leaders and two central Texas communities.To describe our approach, key findings, and lessons learned in implementing the YLCHLI in two different organizational settings: a high school-based setting and a community-based organization setting.Guided by a community advisory board and the Mobilizing for Action through Planning and Partnerships framework, the YLCHLI incorporated a mixed methods design consisting of quantitative community health indicator analysis for topics identified in the Austin/Travis County CHA followed by a youth-led qualitative assessment of selected health issues via methods that included participatory mapping, data walks, and photovoice.Youth-informed findings provided rich insights and context for understanding disparities in selected health issues, including identification of social and environmental barriers to physical activity, healthy eating, health services, and mental health, and locally informed recommendations for community health improvement.High school health science tracks and community- based organizations represent promising settings for fostering community partnerships and youth engagement in identifying local health needs and opportunities that can enhance community health improvement planning and contribute to positive youth development.

INTRODUCTION: Research has demonstrated disparities in depressive symptoms among people who are marginalized. However, more work should examine depressive symptoms through an intersectional lens, recognizing that multiple systems of privilege and oppression interlock to create unique struggles where multiple marginalized identities meet. Recent methodological developments have advanced quantitative intersectionality research using multilevel modeling to partition variance in depressive symptoms to person-level sociodemographic variables and intersectional-level social strata. The purpose of this study is to leverage these methods to examine trajectories of depressive symptoms among young adults in Texas through an intersectional lens. METHODS: Multilevel modeling was used to examine the longitudinal trajectories of depressive symptoms among 3,575 young adults from 24 colleges in Texas assessed seven times between Fall 2014 and Spring 2018. Intersectional identities included sex, race/ethnicity, and sexual and gender minority identities. The model examined time nested within individuals and individuals nested within intersectional social strata. RESULTS: Young adults in Texas experienced an increase in depressive symptoms from 2014–2018. Those with female, Hispanic, AAPI, Other race/ethnicity, or LGBTQ+ identities experienced more depressive symptoms. After controlling for the main effects of the sociodemographic variables, 0.08% of variance in depressive symptoms remained attributed to the effects of intersectional identities. CONCLUSION: Evaluating disparities in depressive symptoms through an intersectional lens offers a more complete description of the epidemiology of depressive symptoms. Communities and institutions that serve marginalized people should consider the elevated burden of depressive symptoms that marginalized people may carry, and integrate culturally competent psychoeducation, assessments, and therapies where possible.

Supplementary Tables 1-2 from Exposure to Smoking Imagery in the Movies and Experimenting with Cigarettes among Mexican Heritage Youth

Background: Smoking experimentation in Mexican American youth is problematic. In light of the research showing that preventing smoking experimentation is a valid strategy for smoking prevention, there is a need to identify Mexican American youth at high risk for experimentation.Methods: A prospective population-based cohort of 1,179 adolescents of Mexican descent was followed for 5 years starting in 2005–06. Participants completed a baseline interview at a home visit followed by three telephone interviews at intervals of approximately 6 months and additional interviews at two home visits in 2008–09 and 2010–11. The primary endpoint of interest in this study was smoking experimentation. Information about social, cultural, and behavioral factors (e.g., acculturation, susceptibility to experimentation, home characteristics, and household influences) was collected at baseline using validated questionnaires.Results: Age, sex, cognitive susceptibility, household smoking behavior, peer influence, neighborhood influence, acculturation, work characteristics, positive outcome expectations, family cohesion, degree of tension, ability to concentrate, and school discipline were found to be associated with smoking experimentation. In a validation dataset, the proposed risk prediction model had an area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC) of 0.719 (95% confidence interval, 0.637–0.801) for predicting absolute risk for smoking experimentation within 1 year.Conclusions: The proposed risk prediction model is able to quantify the risk of smoking experimentation in Mexican American adolescents.Impact: Accurately identifying Mexican American adolescents who are at higher risk for smoking experimentation who can be intervened will substantially reduce the incidence of smoking and thereby subsequent health risks. There is growing evidence that an adolescent's decision to try cigarettes is influenced by level of exposure to movies in which smoking is portrayed. Less is known about how ethnicity affects this process. We examined whether acculturation and/or country of birth influence the relationship between exposure to smoking imagery in the movies and experimenting with cigarettes among Mexican origin youth. We prospectively followed 1,328 Mexican origin adolescents ages 11 to 13 years at baseline. We assessed which of 50 movies (randomly selected from a pool of 250 popular contemporary movies released from 1999 to 2004 and content analyzed for smoking) adolescents had seen. Smoking behavior was assessed at baseline and at 6-month intervals over 24 months. Ten percent of the adolescents had experimented at baseline; 17% tried subsequently. Multivariate analyses revealed, as exposure to smoking imagery in the movies increased, the chances of having ever experimented [adjusted odds ratio (AOR) = 1.27; 95% confidence interval (CI), 1.10-1.48] and of being a new experimenter (AOR = 1.19; 95% CI, 1.01-1.40) increased, equivalent to a 4.2% increased risk of ever and a 3.0% increased risk of new experimenting for each additional quartile of movie exposure. This effect was moderated by country of birth. For Mexican-born youth, exposure to smoking imagery in the movies was the strongest independent predictor of new experimentation (AOR = 1.52; 95% CI, 1.14-2.05). For U.S.-born youth, we observed a ceiling effect: the percent of experimenters increased with increasing exposure, and then flattened. Among Mexican-born youth, exposure to smoking imagery in the movies may be an important part of the acculturation process associated with smoking initiation. Background: Established psychosocial risk factors increase the risk for experimentation among Mexican origin youth. Now, we comprehensively investigate the added contribution of select polymorphisms in candidate genetic pathways associated with sensation seeking, risk taking, and smoking phenotypes to predict experimentation.Methods: Participants (N = 1,118 Mexican origin youth) recruited from a large population-based cohort study in Houston, TX, provided prospective data on cigarette experimentation over 3 years. Psychosocial data were elicited twice—baseline and final follow-up. Participants were genotyped for 672 functional and tagging variants in the dopamine, serotonin, and opioid pathways.Results: After adjusting for gender and age, with a Bayesian False Discovery Probability set at 0.8 and prior probability of 0.05, six gene variants were significantly associated with risk of experimentation. After controlling for established risk factors, multivariable analyses revealed that participants with six or more risk alleles were 2.25 [95% confidence interval (CI), 1.62–3.13] times more likely to have experimented since baseline than participants with five or fewer. Among committed never-smokers (N = 872), three genes (OPRM1, SNAP25, HTR1B) were associated with experimentation as were all psychosocial factors. Among susceptible youth (N = 246), older age at baseline, living with a smoker, and three different genes (HTR2A, DRD2, SLC6A3) predicted experimentation.Conclusions: Our findings, which have implications for development of culturally specific interventions, need to be validated in other ethnic groups.Impact: These results suggest that variations in select genes interact with a cognitive predisposition toward smoking. Supplementary Tables 3-4 from Exposure to Smoking Imagery in the Movies and Experimenting with Cigarettes among Mexican Heritage Youth

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the contexts in which college students use e-cigarettes and marijuana, perceptions about the benefits and harms, and health effects of use. PARTICIPANTS: College student e-cigarette and marijuana ever users (n=20; 18–21 years old) from the Texas Adolescent Tobacco and Marketing Surveillance System (TATAMS). METHODS: Participants completed a one-hour long online interview about their experiences using e-cigarettes and marijuana. Thematic content analysis in NVivo identified prominent themes. RESULTS: Vaping nicotine and marijuana were preferred and perceived as normal, trendy and useful in circumventing smoke-free campus policies. Preference for nicotine versus marijuana fluctuates during the academic school year in response to campus restrictions and work and school-related activities. College students commonly experienced health effects (shortness of breath, wheezing) attributed to vaping, did not perceive their use as very harmful, and perceived their use as a college-related phase. CONCLUSIONS: Findings have implications for college-based health education, resources, and smoke-free policies.

A growing number of reptiles are being kept as companion animals in private households, this has resulted in a concomitant rise in welfare concerns. Poor welfare has been linked to a lack of the emotional attachment in other groups. The aim of this study was to investigate owner attachment to pet reptiles, grouped as lizards, snakes, and tortoises. The Lexington Attachment to Pets Scale (LAPS) questionnaire was administered online to a self-selected sample of 2992 adult reptile owners, including 1281 owners of both reptiles and dogs. The latter responded first for reptiles and then for dogs. Findings revealed evidence of an emotional attachment towards reptiles that was within the range of those observed in traditional pets. In addition, owners had a stronger attachment to lizards than snakes or tortoises and were also more attached to snakes than tortoises. Owners with both dogs and reptiles showed significantly higher attachment scores to their dogs than to reptiles. However, attachment scores for dogs were higher than those found in other studies. This work reveals strong evidence for a human-reptile attachment and suggests that instances of poor welfare may not result from a lack of attachment but rather a lack of knowledge.

Introduction Although emotional symptoms and sensation seeking are recognized as important risk factors for tobacco use among youth and young adults, to date, their joint influence on tobacco use has not been examined. Methods Data used in this study are from the Texas Adolescent Tobacco and Marketing Surveillance study, a population-based cohort. At baseline, in 2014, participants were in the 10th grade. Mixed-effects logistic regression models examined associations between emotional symptoms and sensation seeking in 2014 and odds of past 30-day cigarette and e-cigarette use in 2018. Interactions between emotional symptoms and sensation seeking were examined to assess whether one modifies the effect of the other on cigarette and e-cigarette use. Results After adjusting for age, sex, race/ethnicity, school type, and ever use of cigarettes or e-cigarettes at baseline, adolescents with high emotional symptoms (AOR cig =1.97; 95% CI:1.07–3.60, and AOR e-cig =1.68; 95% CI: 1.06–2.66) and with high sensation seeking tendencies (AOR cig =2.05; 95% CI: 1.03–4.10, and AOR ecig =1.68; 95% CI: 1.02–2.76) had significantly higher odds of past 30-day cigarette and e-cigarette use four years later compared to adolescents with low emotional symptoms and low sensation seeking tendencies. The interaction was significant (p=0.01) for e-cigarette use only; among low sensation seekers, adolescents who reported high levels of emotional symptoms were at increased risk for past 30- day use (AOR e-cig =3.43; 95% CI: 1.38–8.51), and among adolescents with low emotional symptoms, high sensation seekers were at increased for risk for past 30-day use (AOR e-cig =3.50; 95% CI: 1.54–7.91). Conclusions It is important for tobacco use prevention programs to consider both behavioral risk factors – sensation seeking and emotional symptoms – in an integrative way, to target high risk subgroups and thereby increase the efficacy of existing effective intervention strategies in order to curb tobacco use among youth and young adults.

BackgroundFetal exposure to tobacco increases the risk for many adverse birth outcomes, but whether diet mitigates these risks has yet to be explored. Here, we examined whether maternal folate intake (from foods and supplements) during pregnancy modified the association between prenatal exposure to tobacco and with preterm delivery, small-for-gestational age (SGA) births, or neonatal adiposity.MethodsMother–child pairs (n = 701) fromHealthy Startwere included in this analysis. Urinary cotinine was measured at ~ 27 weeks gestation. Diet was assessed using repeated 24-h dietary recalls. Neonatal adiposity (fat mass percentage) was measured via air displacement plethysmography. Interaction was assessed by including a product term between cotinine (thpercentile [1077 µg/day]) in separate logistic or linear regression models, adjusting for maternal age, race, ethnicity, education, pre-pregnancy body mass index, and infant sex.ResultsApproximately 26% of women had detectable levels of cotinine. Folate intake was significantly lower among women with cotinine ≥ LOD as compared to those with cotinine p = 0.01). Folate modified the association between fetal exposure to tobacco with neonatal adiposity (p for interaction = 0.07) and SGA (p for interaction = 0.07). Among those with lower folate intake, fetal exposure to tobacco was associated with lower neonatal adiposity (mean difference: -2.09%; 95% CI: -3.44, -0.74) and increased SGA risk (OR: 4.99; 95% CI: 1.55, 16.14). Conversely, among those with higher folate intake, there was no difference in neonatal adiposity (mean difference: -0.17%; 95% CI: -1.13, 0.79) or SGA risk (OR: 1.15; 95% CI: 0.57, 2.31).ConclusionsIncreased folate intake during pregnancy (from foods and/or supplements) may mitigate the risk of fetal growth restriction among those who are unable to quit smoking or cannot avoid secondhand smoke during pregnancy.

Continuous treatments propensity scoring remains understudied as the majority of methods are focused on the binary treatment setting. Current propensity score methods for continuous treatments typically rely on weighting in order to produce causal estimates. It has been shown that in some continuous treatment settings, weighting methods can result in worse covariate balance than had no adjustments been made to the data. Furthermore, weighting is not always stable, and resultant estimates may be unreliable due to extreme weights. These issues motivate the current development of novel propensity score stratification techniques to be used with continuous treatments. Specifically, the generalized propensity score cumulative distribution function (GPS-CDF) and the nonparametric GPS-CDF (npGPS-CDF) approaches are introduced. Empirical CDFs are used to stratify subjects based on pretreatment confounders in order to produce causal estimates. A detailed simulation study shows superiority of these new stratification methods based on the empirical CDF, when compared to standard weighting techniques. The proposed methods are applied to the “Mexican American Tobacco use in Children” (MATCh) study to determine the causal relationship between continuous exposure to smoking imagery in movies, and smoking behavior among Mexican-American adolescents. These promising results provide investigators with new options for implementing continuous treatment propensity scoring.

Visual illusions have been widely used as a tool to study animal visual perception. In many cases, identical experimental procedures were adopted to make highly controlled interspecific comparisons. However, reducing methodological variability may prevent reliable comparisons because a certain methodology could be more suitable for some species than others. This study sought to build on previous work that investigated the perception of the Delboeuf illusion in reptiles. Reptiles were presented with trials composed of 2 different-sized food portions on 2 identical plates in which they were expected to maximize their food intake. In contrast to the bearded dragons (Pogona vitticeps), tortoises (Chelonoidis carbonaria) performed poorly in all conditions and therefore no firm conclusion regarding their perception of the illusion could be made. Such results could be due to cognitive challenges or due to the experimental setup, because descending a ramp is demanding for the tortoises. In this study, we adopted the same experimental paradigm but in a flat apparatus. Tortoises significantly discriminated the larger food portions in baseline trials, however, their performance did not differ from chance in illusory trials revealing that, under these conditions, they are not sensitive to the Delboeuf illusion. This nonperception could be ascribed to different factors, such as poorer discrimination ability or a low sensitivity to contrast and assimilation phenomena. Our study highlights the importance of additional investigation to better understand the nature of null results, taking in consideration the ecological needs of the species before drawing any conclusions about its abilities. 1. Wild animals are used in scientific research in a wide variety of contexts both in situ and ex situ. Guidelines for best practice, where they exist, are not always clearly linked to animal welfare and may instead have their origins in practicality. This is complicated by a lack of clarity about indicators of welfare for wild animals, and to what extent a researcher should intervene in cases of compromised welfare. 2. This Primer highlights and discusses the broad topic of wild animal welfare and the ethics of using wild animals in scientific research, both in the wild and in controlled conditions. Throughout, we discuss issues associated with the capture, handling, housing and experimental approaches for species occupying varied habitats, in both vertebrates and invertebrates (principally insects, crustaceans and molluscs). 3. We highlight where data on the impacts of wild animal research are lacking and provide suggestive guidance to help direct, prepare and mitigate potential welfare issues, including the consideration of end-points and the ethical framework around euthanasia. 4. We conclude with a series of recommendations for researchers to implement from the design stage of any study that uses animals, right through to publication, and discuss the role of journals in promoting better reporting of wild animal studies, ultimately to the benefit of wild animal welfare.

Introduction The aim of this study was to determine whether Electronic Nicotine Delivery Systems (ENDS) device type (disposable devices, replaceable cartridges, and refillables) at initial or first ENDS use predicts subsequent initiation of combustible tobacco products (cigarettes, hookah, cigars) among adolescents and/or differentiates between those who initiate use of both ENDS and combustible tobacco products at the same time. Methods The study examined data from the Texas Adolescent Tobacco and Marketing Surveillance System (TATAMS), a longitudinal population-based cohort of students in major metropolitan areas of Texas (n = 3907; N = 461 069). Data were collected every 6 months, from 2014 to 2018; 33.9% (n = 1324; N = 151 784) of the sample initiated ENDS use across this period. Unadjusted and adjusted logistic regression models were used to assess the odds of initiating combustible tobacco products at a subsequent or similar wave as ENDS initiation, given initial ENDS device type. Results After adjusting for sociodemographic factors, the odds of initiating combustible tobacco use subsequent to ENDS initiation were significantly lower among those who reported using Cartridges as their initial device type compared to those who reported Refillables as their initial device type (adjusted odds ratio = 0.42 [0.18–0.98], p = .05). In addition, after controlling for sociodemographic variables, the odds of initiating combustible tobacco use in the same wave as ENDS initiation were significantly higher among those who reported using Cartridges as their initial device type, compared with those who reported Refillables as their initial device type (adjusted odds ratio = 2.31 [1.05–5.10], p = .04). No significant differences were found in adjusted models when Disposables were compared to Refillables and Cartridges to Disposables. Conclusion ENDS device type differentiates between adolescents who start using combustible tobacco products at the same time as initial ENDS use, or subsequently. Implications Previous research has shown ENDS use predicts subsequent combustible use among adolescents, but there is lack of research on the role of specific ENDS device types and the timing of initiation. Findings from this longitudinal study show that initiation of combustible tobacco product use varies by initial ENDS device type among adolescents. These findings can become a focal point for developing interventions for adolescents and could have regulatory implications for ENDS products.

Introduction: Body image dissatisfaction (BID) has been inversely associated with breastfeeding initiation particularly among women with obesity. However, less is known on BID and the association with maintaining breastfeeding in Mexico, where breastfeeding rate is decreasing across ethnic subgroups. Therefore, we explore this gap of knowledge in diverse ethnic subgroups across levels of maternal weight status. Methods: Data were derived from the Mexican National Health and Nutrition Survey (Encuesta Nacional de Salud y Nutrición [ENSANUT] 2012), and 10,466 women aged 20–49 years were included. Breastfeeding (0), and 37% had obesity (BMI ≥30 kg/m(2)). In the multivariable analysis, for each one-unit increase in the BID score, the adjusted odds of breastfeeding (≥6 months) decreased by 6% (odds ratio [OR] = 0.94, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.89–0.99). After stratifications, only among women with obesity, a greater BID score was associated with lower odds of breastfeeding duration by 24% (OR = 0.76, 95% CI: 0.64–0.89) in indigenous and by 10% (OR = 0.90, 95% CI: 0.82–0.98) in non-indigenous women. Conclusions: Mexican women with a higher BID score reported lower odds of breastfeeding duration (≥6 months). Body image concerns should be integrated into a health promotion curriculum to mitigate their negative effect particularly in certain segments of the populations, such as women with obesity and among indigenous women.

Despite being observed throughout the animal kingdom, catching a moving object is a complex task and little is known about the mechanisms that underlie this behavior in non-human animals. Three experiments examined the role of prediction in capture of a moving object by pigeons. In Experiment 1, a stimulus moved in a linear trajectory, but sometimes made an unexpected 90oturn. The sudden turn had only a modest effect on capture and error location, and the analyses suggested that the birds had adjusted their tracking to the novel motion. In Experiment 2, the role of visual input during a turn was tested by inserting disappearances (either 1.5 cm or 4.5 cm) on both the straight and turn trials. The addition of the disappearance had little effect on capture success, but delayed capture location with the larger disappearance leading to greater delay. Error analyses indicated that the birds adapted to the post-turn, post-disappearance motion. Experiment 3 tested the role of visual input when the motion disappeared behind an occluder and emerged in either a straight line or at a 90oangle. The occluder produced a disruption in capture success but did not delay capture. Error analyses indicated that the birds did not adjust their tracking to the new motion on turn trials following occlusion. The combined results indicate that pigeons can anticipate the future position of a stimulus, and can adapt to sudden, unpredictable changes in motion but do so better after a disappearance than after an occlusion.

The Internet plays a central role in the daily life of most adolescents. Despite the numerous potential benefits the Internet affords, it can also lead to problematic behaviours. This study analyses several risk and protective factors associated with online gambling among a Spanish representative sample of students aged 14–18 years old (N = 37,486). Ordered logistic regression estimates show a positive and increasing association between online gambling prevalence and the frequency by which adolescents report cyberbullying victimization. However, having caring parents, having less disposable income, not participating in sports, and reading for entertainment appear as protective factors.

Objectives: In this study, we examine the prevalence and demographic, social, and behavioral characteristics associated with college students' exposure to and engagement with tobaccorelated social media, in a diverse sample from the Marketing and Promotions Across Colleges in Texas Study (N = 4384). Methods: We used multiple logistic regression to examine cross-sectional associations between characteristics and exposure and engagement. Results: Overall, 30% of students reported past 30-day exposure to tobacco advertising on social media. Exposure was greatest for e-cigarette advertisements on Facebook. A total of 23% reported engagement. Anti-engagement activities, like posting links to anti-tobacco messaging, were more prevalent than pro-engagement. Racial/ethnic minorities, 2-year college students, dual/poly-users, higher social media users, students with friends who use tobacco, and students with higher depressive symptoms were significantly more likely to report exposure. Racial/ethnic minorities, sexual/gender minorities, 2-year college students, dual/poly-users, higher social media users, and students with higher depressive symptoms were more likely to report pro-engagement. Sexual/gender minorities, non-users and dual/poly-users (vs single-product users), higher social media users, students with friends who use tobacco, and students with higher depressive symptoms were more likely to report anti-engagement. Females were more likely to report hookah advertising exposure and anti-tobacco engagement. Conclusions: We discuss the regulatory and practical implications.

This study extends the truancy literature by exploring correlates of both committing truancy and the numbers of days truant among Spanish secondary school students. The study incorporates cyberbullying, peer truancy and parenting style as key predictors. Several count data regression models are estimated using a nationally representative survey of Spanish students (N = 37,476; Mage = 15.73; 50.9 % females). The results suggest that cyberbullying and parenting style play a significant role in a student’s decision to commit truancy, while peer truancy plays a significant role in both the decision of whether or not to commit truancy (OR = 1.61) and the number of days truant (IRR = 1.41). These results suggest that reducing cyberbullying and promoting specific parenting styles may serve to reduce truancy, and that this direct effect or reduction could be further increased indirectly via peer or social multipliers.

Objectives: Multiple-tobacco product (MTP) use is common among adolescent tobacco users. Low positive affect is a risk factor for e-cigarette use and combustible tobacco smoking. In this study, we examine the longitudinal relationship between positive affect and MTP use in a diverse cohort of adolescents in Texas. Methods: We analyzed 6 waves of biennial data (fall 2014-spring 2017) from the Texas Adolescent Tobacco and Marketing Surveillance (TATAMS) system. Participants were 3868 sixth-, eighth-, and tenth-grade students in urban Texas, at enrollment. Multinomial logistic regression models examined the longitudinal relationship between positive affect and categories of MTP use, controlling for sex, race/ethnicity, past 30-day alcohol use, cohort, survey wave, and peer tobacco use. Results: The sample was comprised of 4.6% single-product users, 1.7% dual-users, and 0.7% poly-users. Each unit decrease in positive affect was associated with increased risk for single- (RRR: 1.29; 95% CI: 1.16-1.44), dual- (RRR: 1.35; 95% CI: 1.11-1.64), and poly- (RRR: 1.98; 95% CI: 1.54-2.54) use, relative to non-use. Similarly, each unit decrease in positive affect was also associated with increased risk for poly-tobacco use relative to single- (RRR: 1.53; 95% CI: 1.19-1.97) and dual- (RRR: 1.47; 95% CI: 1.11-1.95) use. Positive affect did not differentiate between single- and dual-use. Conclusion: We observed a gradient relationship between low positive affect and greater number of tobacco products used. Findings reinforce the association between poor mental health and tobacco use during adolescence. Prevention efforts may need to incorporate methods of addressing low positive affect.

Use of electronic nicotine delivery systems (ENDS) increased significantly after 2017. The increase is attributed to a surge in popularity of vape pods containing nicotine salts, which are high nicotine concentration ENDS that may heighten risk for dependence. However, little is known about changes in ENDS dependence before and after the 2017 surge. We examined the trajectory of ENDS dependence among young adults from 2014 to 2019.Participants were 1700 18-25-year-olds (57.6 % female) from 24 Texas colleges who reported past 30-day ENDS use in at least one of eight study waves. ENDS dependence was assessed at all waves with one item, use of ENDS within 30 min of waking. A discontinuous growth curve model was fit to test the hypothesis that the ENDS dependence trajectory would increase only after 2017, from 2018 to 2019. The model included socio-demographic and cigarette dependence covariates RESULTS: The proportion of young adults reporting ENDS dependence ranged from 2.3 % in 2014 to 8.2 % in 2019. Results from the discontinuous growth curve model indicated that the ENDS dependence trajectory was flat from fall 2014 to spring 2017. However, the post-2017 trajectory, from spring 2018 to spring 2019, was positive and significant indicating that the proportion of young adults reporting ENDS dependence increased after 2017.The increase in ENDS dependence after 2017 likely resulted from the surge in popularity of vape pods containing nicotine salts. These vape pods are a disruptive technology that may result in more young adults developing nicotine dependence symptoms than do earlier generation devices.

There is much evidence in mammals and birds demonstrating the importance of providing sufficient space to allow captive animals to exhibit natural behaviours, however, little such evidence exists for reptiles. The aim of this study was to ascertain whether enclosure size impacted on the behaviour and welfare of captive corn snakes (Pantherophis guttatus). Snakes (N = 12) were housed in enclosures that were either 2/3 their length (small) or longer than the length of the snake (large) for c.32 days. Their welfare was assessed through observations of the animals in their enclosure and behavioural tests; after completing these tests, each animal was switched to the other housing condition (order counterbalanced across individuals) and received the same welfare assessment. Following the second set of behavioural tests, all animals received a preference test. When housed in large enclosures, snakes were found to be more active and spent time stretched out - a behaviour that was not possible in the small enclosure. The behavioural tests revealed few effects of space provision; however, when given a choice, snakes showed a clear preference for the large enclosure whilst active, although this preference was not observed while resting. These findings suggest that providing a larger enclosure is beneficial to the behaviour and welfare of captive snakes. Not providing sufficient space to allow snakes to fully elongate appears to thwart a behavioural need and thus impacts negatively on their welfare. We therefore recommend that captive snakes be kept in an enclosure longer than their body length.

Objectives: Purpose of study is to explore the roles religiosity and fatalistic beliefs play in diabetes management among newly, currently, and long-term enrolled Mexican-American participants in a Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) chronic care management program.Methods: In 2017, study participants (n = 15) completed a semi-structured interview in their preferred language (English or Spanish). Sample was stratified by amount of time individual had been enrolled as a participant of the Salud y Vida program: newly, currently, or long-term. Interviews assessed religious beliefs, beliefs concerning the cause(s) of diabetes, perceived relationship between religiosity and fatalistic beliefs with T2DM management, and the appropriateness of discussing such topics with a health professional. Interview responses were analyzed using ATLAS.ti 8.Results: Themes identified included: perceived autonomy over diabetes prognosis, motivators for self-care, discussions of personal beliefs in the healthcare setting, and the church's role in diabetes management.Conclusions: Among this sample, religiosity and religious fatalism played a complex role in coping with and managing diabetes. Long-term enrolled and male participants expressed beliefs of divine control over health, and a connection between religiosity and health behavior. Long-term enrolled participants felt religious and fatalistic beliefs may be suitable and beneficial to discuss in the healthcare setting.

While the effect of drought on plant communities and their associated ecosystem functions is well studied, little research has considered how responses are modified by soil depth and depth heterogeneity. We conducted a mesocosm study comprising shallow and deep soils, and variable and uniform soil depths, and two levels of plant community composition, and exposed them to a simulated drought to test for interactive effects of these treatments on the resilience of carbon dioxide fluxes, plant functional traits, and soil chemical properties. We tested the hypotheses that: (a) shallow and variable depth soils lead to increased resistance and resilience of ecosystem functions to drought due to more exploitative plant trait strategies; (b) plant communities associated with intensively managed high fertility soils, will have more exploitative root traits than extensively managed, lower fertility plant communities. These traits will be associated with higher resistance and resilience to drought and may interact with soil depth and depth heterogeneity to amplify the effects on ecosystem functions. Our results showed that while there were strong soil depth/heterogeneity effects on plant‐driven carbon fluxes, it did not affect resistance or resilience to drought, and there were no treatment effects on plant‐available carbon or nitrogen. We did observe a significant increase in exploitative root traits in shallow and variable soils relative to deep and uniform, which may have resulted in a compensation effect which led to the similar drought responses. Plant community compositions representative of intensive management were more drought resilient than more diverse “extensive” communities irrespective of soil depth or soil depth heterogeneity. In intensively managed plant communities, root traits were more representative of exploitative strategies. Taken together, our results suggest that reorganization of root traits in response to soil depth could buffer drought effects on ecosystem functions., Soil depth, and depth heterogeneity in grassland could have consequences for ecosystem function and response to drought, but so far have been overlooked in experimental designs. In a greenhouse study, we examined the interaction between plant species diversity, soil depth heterogeneity and drought for a range of ecosystem functions. We showed that soil depth directly alters plant root trait expression, which has a cascading effect on the response of the community to drought.

In humans and rats, changes in mood and affect are known to occur during pregnancy, however it is unknown how gestation may influence mood in other non-human mammals. This study assessed changes in pigs’ judgment bias as a measure of affective state throughout gestation. Pigs were trained to complete a spatial judgement bias task with reference to positive and negative locations. We tested gilts before mating, and during early and late pregnancy, by assessing their responses to ambiguous probe locations. Pigs responded increasingly negatively to ambiguous probes as pregnancy progressed and there were consistent inter-individual differences in baseline optimism. This suggests that the pigs’ affective state may be altered during gestation, although as a non-pregnant control group was not tested, an effect of learning cannot be ruled out. These results suggest that judgement bias is altered during pregnancy in domestic pigs, consequently raising novel welfare considerations for captive multiparous species.

A systematic review is a valuable and influential research method that aims to identify and synthesize all literature relevant to the research question at hand. A well-conducted systematic review benefits the scientific community by providing a summary of all the existing evidence as well as generating new hypotheses and highlighting gaps in the literature. However, when a systematic review does not adhere to the recommended guidelines, it may introduce selection bias and generate false conclusions. Here, we present a commentary on a systematic review by the scholars Morley-Hewitt and Owen titled ‘ A systematic review examining the association between female body image and the intention, initiation, and duration of postpartum infant feeding methods (breastfeeding vs. bottle-feeding)’ that included nine peer-reviewed articles but missed at least eight other peer-reviewed articles that aligned with their study aim, and therefore introduced selection bias in the review. To complete the missing piece, we provide a short summary of these additional articles and describe how they align with this systematic review.

1. The use of plant traits to predict ecosystem functions has been gaining growing attention. Aboveground plant traits, such as leaf nitrogen (N) content and specific leaf area (SLA), have been shown to strongly relate to ecosystem productivity, respiration, and nutrient cycling. Further, increasing plant functional trait diversity has been suggested as a possible mechanism to increase ecosystem carbon (C) storage. However, it is uncertain whether belowground plant traits can be predicted by aboveground traits, and if both above- and belowground traits can be used to predict soil properties and ecosystem-level functions. 2. Here, we used two adjacent field experiments in temperate grassland to investigate if above- and belowground plant traits are related, and whether relationships between plant traits, soil properties and ecosystem C fluxes (i.e., ecosystem respiration and net ecosystem exchange) measured in potted monocultures could be detected in mixed field communities. 3. We found that certain shoot traits (e.g., shoot N and C, and leaf dry matter content) were related to root traits (e.g., root N, root C:N, and root dry matter content) in monocultures, but such relationships were either weak or not detected in mixed communities. Some relationships between plant traits (i.e., shoot N, root N and/or shoot C:N) and soil properties (i.e., inorganic N availability and microbial community structure) were similar in monocultures and mixed communities, but they were more strongly linked to shoot traits in monocultures and root traits in mixed communities. Structural equation modelling showed that above- and belowground traits and soil properties improved predictions of ecosystem C fluxes in monocultures, but not in mixed communities on the basis of community-weighted mean traits. 4. Synthesis: Our results from a single grassland habitat detected relationships in monocultures between above- and belowground plant traits, and between plant traits, soil properties and ecosystem C fluxes. However, these relationships were generally weaker or different in mixed communities. Our results demonstrate that while plant traits can be used to predict certain soil properties and ecosystem functions in monocultures, they are less effective for predicting how changes in plant species composition influence ecosystem functions in mixed communities.

Mexican-origin adolescents have a high prevalence of obesity. Research is needed to understand how family context may shape adolescent BMI. This study examined longitudinal associations of family functioning variables with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's modified BMI z-score (BMIaz) in 1175 Mexican-origin adolescents, and explored interactions with acculturation. Adolescents (50% female, aged 11–13 y in 2005–06) were identified from an ongoing cohort study of Mexican-origin adults in Houston, TX, and were assessed three times from 2005–06 to 2010–11. In multivariate linear mixed models stratified by gender, we assessed longitudinal associations of family cohesion and family conflict with adolescent BMIaz and explored interactions with language acculturation. We disaggregated the between- (mean) and within-person (individual deviation) components of family cohesion and family conflict to assess the effects on BMIaz. Approximately one-third of adolescents were obese at baseline, and BMIaz declined during the study. In girls, higher mean family cohesion and conflict were associated with steeper declines in BMIaz. Parental linguistic acculturation modified the relationship between within-person deviation in family cohesion and BMIaz in girls, such that high parental U.S. acculturation was associated with a stronger inverse association. There were no significant associations in boys. These findings highlight the potential importance of the family context to female adolescent BMI and the promise of addressing family context in obesity-related interventions.

E-cigarettes are the most commonly used tobacco product among youth and young adults in the US. Limited research has examined how stress impacts e-cigarette use among young people. We examine the longitudinal associations between perceived stress scale (PSS) score and e-cigarette use behaviors among a diverse cohort of emerging adults. We analyzed two waves of data collected in Fall 2019 (baseline) and Spring 2020 (6-month follow-up) of the Texas Adolescent Tobacco and Marketing Surveillance (TATAMS) system. Participants were classified into three mutually exclusive subsamples at baseline: (1) n = 1177 never e-cigarette users; (2) n = 806 ever but not current (past 30-day) e-cigarette users (i.e., ever users); and (3) n = 257 current (past 30-day) e-cigarette users. Three multivariate logistic regression models examined the relationship between PSS at baseline and: (1) initiation among never users; (2) progression to current use among ever users; and (3) continuation among current users, at 6-month follow-up. PSS scores were standardized using z-scores. Models controlled for race/ethnicity, sex, age, ever marijuana use, and ever use of other tobacco products. Mean age ranged from 18.6 to 19.4 among cohorts. Risk for e-cigarette progression among ever users (aOR: 1.30; 95%CI: 1.01–1.69) and e-cigarette continuation among current users (aOR: 1.33 (95%CI: 1.01–1.75) increased with each unit increase in PSS score at baseline. PSS at baseline was not associated with e-cigarette initiation among never users. PSS predicted greater risk of e-cigarette progression and continuation but not initiation among a diverse cohort of emerging adults. E-cigarette prevention and cessation strategies should consider perceived stress an important risk factor for e-cigarette use during emerging adulthood.

Family history of metabolic conditions is a primary factor for clinicians to consider when administering preventive care. Sharing this information with healthcare providers proactively is therefore important to individual health outcomes. This brief report seeks to identify factors associated with sharing family history with healthcare providers in individuals of Mexican heritage. Data were obtained from a health education intervention study conducted during 2008–2010, which recruited 497 adult participants from 162 multigenerational households in Houston, Texas to receive family history-based risk feedback generated by Family Healthware™. Households were randomized to receive a pedigree of metabolic conditions or a pedigree coupled with supplementary information about one’s personalized risk assessment and behavioral recommendations. Participants completed two follow-up surveys at three and ten months post intervention, respectively. Analysis based on 296 participants from 147 households who read but did not share their feedback at three-month follow-up suggests benefits of providing personalized risk assessment and tailored behavioral recommendations in addition to a simple pedigree. Participants receiving supplementary risk feedback are more likely to share it with family members at three-month follow-up, which is associated with increased sharing and willingness to share risk feedback with healthcare providers at ten-month follow-up. The findings highlight the importance of family relationships in medical information disclosure in Mexican American adults. Future interventions should capitalize on family relationships in health education and promotion programs for optimal prevention of metabolic conditions in at-risk populations.

Odour detection animals are required to learn many individual odours during training. Most organisations and agencies use single-odour (sequential) training, where animals learn one odour followed by another. However, this method may not be optimal for learning or for detecting target odours when they are mixed with other substances, which is an inevitable occurrence when animals are actively deployed in the field. Here, we used a Go/No-Go procedure to investigate the impact of three different training methods upon rats’ ability to identify target-odours alone and within mixtures. A sequential group were trained with odour A followed by odour B or vice versa; a compound group were trained with odours AB presented as a single stimulus; and an intermixed group were trained separately on both odours A and B within a session. Following training, all groups were tested for their responses to A, B, and AB, as well as these odours combined with a novel odour C: AC, BC, ABC. Responses to the test stimuli significantly differed between groups (p = 0.002). The intermixed group generalised significantly better than the sequential (p = 0.005) and compound (p = 0.014) groups; and the compound group generalised significantly better than the sequential group (p = 0.023). These findings have important implications for the training of animals used for odour detection. They provide strong evidence that an intermixed training method may be more effective than the generally employed method of sequential single-odour training.

AIMS To examine the longitudinal trajectory of young Texan (US) adults' electronic nicotine delivery systems (ENDS) use from 2014 to 2019, and to determine if there are changes in the trajectory among younger and older young adults post-2017, when vape pods surged in popularity in the United States. DESIGN Nine-wave longitudinal study, with 6 months between each of the first eight waves and 1 year between the last two waves. Discontinuous, or piecewise, growth curve models were used to test the hypotheses that (a) the overall current/past 30-day ENDS use trajectory would decline from 2014 to spring 2017 but then increase from fall 2017 to 2019, and (b) the increasing trajectory from 2017 to 2019 would occur only for younger participants, but not older participants. All models included socio-demographic covariates of sex, race/ethnicity, type of college attended at baseline (2- or 4-year) and time-varying age. SETTING AND PARTICIPANTS A total of 5218 students (aged 18-25 years at baseline; 63.7% female) from 24 colleges in the five counties surrounding Austin, Dallas/Fort Worth, Houston and San Antonio, Texas, USA. MEASUREMENTS Participants completed on-line surveys regarding past 30-day ENDS use at all nine waves. FINDINGS Current ENDS use significantly declined from 2014 to spring 2017 [odds ratio (OR) = 0.63, 95% confidence interval (CI) = 0.59-0.68], and then significantly increased from autumn 2017 to 2019 (OR = 1.14, 95% CI = 1.01-1.29). Further examination indicated the increase in current ENDS use from autumn 2017 to 2019 occurred only for younger [-1 standard deviation (SD) below the mean age, 22.6 years old], but not older (+1 SD above the mean age, 26.2 years old), participants. CONCLUSION The surge in the popularity of vape pods in the United States in late 2017 may have contributed to increasing use of electronic nicotine delivery systems among younger young adults (below 22.6 years) from late 2017 to 2019.

Animals are exposed to different visual stimuli that influence how they perceive and interact with their environment. Visual information such as shape and colour can help the animal detect, discriminate and make appropriate behavioural decisions for mate selection, communication, camouflage, and foraging. In all major vertebrate groups, it has been shown that certain species can discriminate and prefer certain colours and that colours may increase the response to a stimulus. However, because colour is often studied together with other potentially confounding factors, it is still unclear to what extent colour discrimination plays a crucial role in the perception of and attention towards biologically relevant and irrelevant stimuli. To address these questions in reptiles, we assessed the response of three gecko speciesCorrelophus ciliatus, Eublepharis macularius, andPhelsuma laticaudato familiar and novel 2D images in colour or grayscale. We found that while all species responded more often to the novel than to the familiar images, colour information did not influence object discrimination. We also found that the duration of interaction with images was significantly longer for the diurnal species,P. laticauda, than for the two nocturnal species, but this was independent from colouration. Finally, no differences among sexes were observed within or across species. Our results indicate that geckos discriminate between 2D images of different content independent of colouration, suggesting that colouration does not increase detectability or intensity of the response. These results are essential for uncovering which visual stimuli produce a response in animals and furthering our understanding of how animals use colouration and colour vision.

Objectives This study examines the relationships between recall of exposure to digital marketing of smokeless tobacco, via the internet and social media, and subsequent initiation of smokeless tobacco use at one-year follow-up, among young adult never users of smokeless tobacco in Texas. Methods Data were from waves 6 (Spring 2017) and 7 (Spring 2018) of the Marketing and Promotions Across Colleges in Texas Study (Project M-PACT); a longitudinal study of two- and four-year Texas college students. Participants were 2731 young adult never smokeless tobacco users (ages 20–32) with complete data at both assessment periods. A multi-level, multiple logistic regression model was applied, accounting for school clustering, to examine the relationship between recall of exposure to digital marketing of smokeless tobacco at baseline (wave 6) and smokeless tobacco use initiation at one-year follow-up (wave 7). Analyses controlled for important baseline covariates (socio-demographic factors, other marketing exposure, other tobacco product use). Results Overall, 14.6% of never smokeless tobacco users reported exposure to smokeless tobacco marketing via digital media. Exposure to digital marketing of smokeless tobacco at baseline was associated with greater odds of smokeless tobacco use initiation among young adult never users (AOR: 2.14; 95%CI: 1.12 – 4.06) at one-year follow-up. Conclusions Findings reveal exposure to smokeless tobacco marketing via digital media was common. Further, there appears to be a strong relationship between this exposure and subsequent smokeless tobacco use among young adult never smokeless tobacco users.

This study explores the perceptions and motivation for weight loss among participants who completed a free community-based weight loss program in a predominantly Hispanic and low-income region along the US-Mexico border using a Self-Determination Theory (SDT) perspective. This manuscript is timely as qualitative research on the effect of motivation as a factor in behavioral interventions to reduce overweight or obesity is currently lacking. Individual semi-structured interviews were conducted with 20 participants (80%, n = 16 female) who completed a community weight-loss intervention to assess motivation for weight loss and participating, and the role of social support and self-efficacy in weight loss. Directed content analysis was used with SDT guiding the questions and subsequent theme analysis. The findings communicate perspectives of participants relevant to 8 prominent themes. The regulation types and constructs related to SDT included: non-regulation, external regulation, introjected regulation, identified regulation, integrated regulation, and intrinsic regulation as well as competence and relatedness. Participants mentioned external sources of motivation, such as wanting to improve their physical appearance, and motivation due to financial incentives. Fewer participants reported intrinsic motivators, which the literature suggests are more likely to create lasting change and improved health behaviors. Understanding the motivation for behavior change and completion of weight loss programs is essential to help participants reach their goals effectively and sustain weight loss. A greater emphasis during weight loss programs on the motives for individuals to lose weight may help improve outcomes in weight-loss interventions. Additionally, increasing strategies targeted at enhancing intrinsic motivation for weight loss may be beneficial.

Objective To examine the relationship between current cigarette smoking patterns and three established risk factors for suicide using nationally representative data of high school students in the United States. Methods We analyzed cross-sectional data from the national Youth Risk Behavior Surveillance Survey (YRBSS)–United States, 2017. Multivariable, logistic regressions examined the association between 3 cigarette smoking behaviors [i.e., past 30-day cigarette (n = 13,731), frequent (n = 1,093) and heavy (n = 880) smoking] and 3 risk factors for suicidal outcomes [feeling sad or hopeless, suicidal ideation, suicide plan] assessed over the previous year. Results Among high school cigarette smokers, smoking 11 or more cigarettes per day (i.e., heavy smoking) was associated with 3.43 (95% CI: 1.69, 6.94) greater odds of reporting feeling sad or hopeless, 2.97 (95% CI: 1.60, 5.51) greater odds of reporting suicidal ideations, and 2.11 (95% CI: 1.34, 3.32) greater odds of reporting having ever planned a suicide attempt, controlling for covariates. Conclusions Our study shows that it is not simply cigarette smoking, but heavy cigarette smoking that is a risk factor for suicidal outcomes among adolescents. Public health implications A comprehensive plan is needed to accommodate heavy adolescent smokers who are at increased suicidal risk.
