Im Zuge der aktuellen Diskussionen zur Autonomie bzw. dem Gestaltungsanspruch von Schule, der Notwendigkeit einer ganztägigen Betreuung sowie einer zunehmenden Orientierung an der „optimalen“ Entwicklung des Kindes kommt der Schulwahl seitens der Eltern eine hohe Relevanz zu. Im Artikel werden die Motive von Eltern zur Schulwahl anhand von Befragungen (N=255, N=418) an dem staatlich genehmigten Schulversuch Universitätsschule Dresden (USD) explorativ dargelegt und diskutiert. Bei nahezu 90 % der Eltern werden das Schulkonzept sowie die passende Entwicklung für das eigene Kind als Hauptmotive betont. Diese Befragungsdaten wurden durch inhaltsanalytische Auswertungen offener Antworten untermauert. Die USD unterscheidet sich demnach deutlich von ‚klassischen‘ staatlichen Schulen, an denen pragmatische Gründe wie insbesondere die Wohnortnähe als Motiv für die Schulwahl genannt werden.

IntroductionPrevious aesthetic research has set its main focus on visual and auditory, primarily music, stimuli with only a handful of studies exploring the aesthetic potential of linguistic stimuli. In the present study, we investigate for the first time the effects of personality traits on phonaesthetic language ratings.MethodsTwenty-three under-researched, “rarer” (less learned and therefore less known as a foreign language or L2) and minority languages were evaluated by 145 participants in terms of eroticism, beauty, status, and orderliness, subjectively perceived based on language sound.ResultsOverall, Romance languages (Catalan, Portuguese, Romanian) were still among the top six erotic languages of the experiment together with “Romance-sounding,” but less known languages like Breton and Basque. Catalan and Portuguese were also placed among the top six most beautiful languages. The Germanic languages (Swedish, Norwegian, Danish, and Icelandic) were perceived as more prestigious/higher in terms of status, however to some degree conditioned by their recognition/familiarity. Thus, we partly replicated the results of our earlier studies on the Romance language preferences (the so-called Latin Lover effect) and the perceived higher status of the Germanic languages and scrutinized again the effects of familiarity/language recognition, thereby calling into question the above mentioned concepts of the Latin Lover effect and the status of Germanic languages. We also found significant effects of personality traits (neuroticism, extraversion, and conscientiousness) on phonaesthetic ratings. Different personality types appreciated different aspects of languages: e.g., whereas neurotics had strong opinions about languages' eroticism, more conscientious participants gave significantly different ratings for status. Introverts were more generous in their ratings overall in comparison to extroverts. We did not find strong connections between personality types and specific languages or linguistic features (sonority, speech rate). Overall, personality traits were largely overridden by other individual differences: familiarity with languages (socio-cultural construals, the Romanization effect—perceiving a particular language as a Romance language) and participants' native language/L1.DiscussionFor language education in the global context, our results mean that introducing greater linguistic diversity in school and universities might result in greater appreciation and motivation to learn lesser-known and minority languages. Even though we generally prefer Romance languages to listen to and to study, different personality types are attracted to different language families and thus make potentially successful learners of these languages.

Henri Lefebvre’s concepts of everyday life and revolution The aim of this article is to analyse the concept of everyday life, which was used by Henri Lefebvre to build his theory of overcoming the alienation – both on the individual (as the theory of moments) and collective (in his concept of revolution as a popular festival) level. In the basic structures of everyday life Lefebvre saw the fundaments of spontaneity, human creative power that is capable of forcing its way through the alienating structures and that makes the total subjugation impossible. Moreover, placing the theory of revolution inside the concept of everyday life allows to draw particular attention to the importance of human consciousness in a revolutionary struggle. In the end, however, it seems that the categories introduced by Lefebvre, even though they create a good fundament for the discussion about the possibility of the human emancipation, cannot fully explain the phenomenon of the revolution.

Microplastics (MPs) are recognised as an emerging environmental problem that needs to be carefully monitored. So far, MPs have been widely recorded in marine and freshwater ecosystems. Still, few studies have focused on MP occurrence in terrestrial ecosystems, although soils are suspected to be one of the main MP reservoirs. To test a non-invasive method for assessing MP contamination in terrestrial ecosystems, we analysed the pellets of a top terrestrial predator, the barn owl (Tyto alba). Sixty pellets were collected from three agricultural areas (20 pellets each) and analysed to assess both barn owl diet and MP content. Thirty-four MPs were confirmed by micro-Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (μ-FTIR) analysis in 33% of the pellets (min-max 1–5 MPs per pellet). Most of the detected items were microfibres (88.2%). Polyethylene terephthalate, polyacrylonitrile and polyamide were the most abundant polymers. One of the three sites was significantly less contaminated. In the two sites with the highest MP occurrences, barn owl diet was characterised by predation on synanthropic rodents, particularly brown rats (Rattus norvegicus), which may indicate habitat degradation and increased exposure to MPs. Analyses also suggest that Savi's pine vole (Microtus savii) is the prey least at risk of MP contamination, probably due to its strictly herbivorous diet. We argue that the analysis of barn owl pellets may represent a cost-effective method for monitoring MP contamination in terrestrial ecosystems.

Microplastics (MPs) are nowadays abundant, persistent, and ubiquitous in the environment, representing a new threat for terrestrial, marine, and freshwater ecosystems. Although anuran populations and species are globally declining, the effect of MP exposure on this taxon has been poorly investigated. With the aim of assessing the effects of microplastic exposure on the defensive responses of Italian agile frog (Rana latastei) tadpoles, we exposed them to three different concentrations (1, 7, and 50 mg L−1) of a mixture of plastic polymers (HPDE, PVC, PS, and PES) for 2 weeks. Then, we measured the total distance covered by individual tadpoles before and after exposure to tadpole-fed dragonfly larvae (Aeshna cyanea) cues. As expected, predation risk sharply lowered the total distance travelled by tadpoles; however, MP concentration did not affect their defensive performances. We also collected data on tadpole development, activity, and mortality. In contrast with previous experiments, neither tadpole growth nor mortality varied with MP concentration. Our results indicate that the intensity of MP effects on growth and development may depend on tadpole size, with large tadpoles being less susceptible to the negative effects of MP exposure.

The diet of the kingfisher Alcedo atthis is usually studied by collecting pellet pools from the nest after breeding. This collecting method is very efficient but has some drawbacks which include invasiveness and restriction to the reproductive period. To overcome these limits, here we propose the collection of pellets under resting sites. Although requiring a large number of surveys to find suitable resting sites and obtain sufficient sample size, this method is minimally invasive and allows a precise estimate of the relative frequency of prey items per pellet and the assessment of kingfisher diet also outside the breeding period. The methodology was applied to an Italian kingfisher population (River Ticino, northern Italy) between March and October 2019. Resting sites were identified in 15 out of 54 sampling stations, from which 133 pellets were collected. By comparing diagnostic remains, 478 preyed individuals were identified including mainly fish (94.4%) ranging in total length between 21 and 105 mm. Fish availability of the River was assessed. The fish community included 49 species, of which 22 (45%) were non-native. Kingfishers preyed on the most widespread and abundant native species, while the contribution of exotic fish was lower than expected. However, the overall consistency of prey use and availability suggests that the analysis of kingfisher pellets represents an additional method for monitoring the composition of freshwater fish communities and man-induced changes across broad geographical scales.

Previous research has reported avian plastic ingestion in marine bird species. Yet, while research attention on plastic pollution is shifting from marine to freshwater ecosystems, very few information on plastic ingestion is available for freshwater birds. Here, we examined the presence of microplastic in regurgitated pellets of the common kingfisher (Alcedo atthis) collected along the Ticino River (North Italy). In total, 133 kingfisher’s pellets were examined between March and October 2019 from 54 transects along the river. Plastic elements were detected and identified by visual inspection followed by μ-FTIR and SEM-EDS. Overall, we found 12 (micro)plastics from at least three different polymers in 7.5% of the pellets. This study provides the first report of plastic uptake of this bird species. It highlights the importance of spectroscopic techniques in plastic monitoring studies in order to avoid misidentification of items found. Documenting the presence of plastic ingestion by top carnivores such as fish-eating birds is necessary to understand the pervasiveness and impact of (micro)plastic pollution in food webs of freshwater ecosystems.

Since nanoplastics are currently considered potentially hazardous to the environment and human health, reliability of studies on nanoplastic exposure becomes crucial. However, analytical challenges limit our understanding of their formation and detection, thus hampering their biological interactions assessment. Here we provide a combined approach to quantitatively and qualitatively detect the release of nanoplastics in water matrix and, in particular, to measure direct exposure of consumers by simulated use of drinking water plastic bottles. We measured that the polyethylene sealing of the bottles released particles with a size distribution ranging from few hundreds nanometers up to about one micron and estimated a mass release in the order of few tenths of nanograms per opening/closing cycle. We observe that mechanical stress alters the physical-chemical characteristics of the generated secondary nanoplastics and degrades the material properties compared to the original bulk source, thus complicating their spectroscopic chemical identification. Our findings demonstrate that understanding material degradation processes is therefore crucial for identifying and quantifying nanoplastics in real samples. Moreover, methods allowing quantitative studies on the release of nanoplastic as a source of exposure are considered essential for proper assessment of their potential health hazards and to promote improvements in consumer products plastic packaging design.

BackgroundThree-dimensional (3D) structured organoids are the most advanced in vitro models for studying human health effects, but they have been applied only once to evaluate the biological effects associated with microplastic exposure. Fibers from synthetic clothes and fabrics are a major source of airborne microplastics, and their release from dryer machines is still poorly understood.ObjectivesIn this study, we aimed to establish an in vitro organoid model of human lung epithelial cells to evaluate its suitability for studying the effects of airborne microplastic contamination on humans. Furthermore, we aimed to characterize the microplastic fibers (MPFs) released in the exhaust filter of a household dryer and to test their interactions and inflammatory effects on the established lung organoids.MethodsThe polyester fibers emitted from the drying of synthetic fabrics were collected. Morphological characterization of the fibers released into the air filter was performed by optical microscopy and scanning electron microscopy (SEM)/energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy (EDS). The organoids were exposed to various MPF concentrations (1, 10, and 50 mg L−1) and analyzed by optical microscopy, SEM, and confocal microscopy. Gene expression analysis of lung-specific genes, inflammatory cytokines, and oxidative stress-related genes was achieved by quantitative reverse transcription–polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR).ResultsWe successfully cultured organoids with lung-specific genes. The presence of MPFs did not inhibit organoid growth, but polarized cell growth was observed along the fibers. Moreover, the MPFs did not cause inflammation or oxidative stress. Interestingly, the MPFs were coated with a cellular layer, resulting in the inclusion of fibers in the organoid.DiscussionThis work could have potential long-term implications regarding lung epithelial cells undergoing repair. This preliminary exposure study using human lung organoids could form the basis for further research regarding the toxicological assessment of emerging contaminants such as micro- or nanoplastics.

Microplastics are practically ubiquitous and pose a serious survival challenge for many species. Most of the exposure experiments for determining the toxicological effects of microplastics were performed with a microplastic varying little in shape and size (often purchased microplastic beads), but few studies deal with non-homogeneous samples. We analyzed the effect on Xenopuslaevis larva on the early development of polyester fibers, PEFs, taken from a dryer machine in which 100% polyester fabrics were dried after washing. Three concentrations were tested. The results showed that the gastrointestinal tract, GIT, was the most affected system by PEFs which modified the normal shape of the intestine with an EC50 96 h value of 6.3 µg mL−1. Fibers were observed to press against the digestive epithelium, deforming the normal architecture of the gut, sometimes pushing deep into the epithelium until piercing it. Physical GIT occlusion was observed in a concentration-dependent manner. However, no other damages were registered. No mortality was observed, but PEF-exposed larvae showed a significant reduction in their mobility. The results of the present paper suggest that environmental samples with their heterogeneity may have adverse effects on X. laevis development.

Plastic debris and microplastics (MPs) evolve into an urgent problem for environmental contamination. Until now, many sources have been identified and nearly all the environmental compartments are subject to MP contamination. Plastic pollution has become of concern as potential threat to human health, too, as MPs were also in food and drinking water. Sources of MP ingestion by humans have already been discussed in several studies [1, 2, 3]. Moreover, recent studies [4, 5, 6], attracted the attention of researchers and the general public as they confirmed the presence of MPs in bottled drinking water.

The aim of this work was to prove a process temperature of 45 °C as a practical alternative to commonly applied mesophilic (37 °C) and thermophilic (55 °C) anaerobic digestion (AD). Regarding methane production, no differences were found between the three temperature regimes. However, the maximum possible loading rate at 45 °C exceeded that at 37 °C and 55 °C. Pathogen inactivation at 45 °C was higher than at 37 °C and similarly efficient as at 55 °C. At each process temperature, a unique microbial community established. In addition, the archaeome at 55 °C was dominated by hydrogenotrophs, while at 37 °C and 45 °C it was dominated by acetotrophs. For the investigated substrate mixture, liquid cattle manure with wheat straw as co-substrate, 45 °C turned out to be preferable for AD. For other substrates, these findings still need to be confirmed.

Plastic particle ingestion has become of concern as a possible threat to human health. Previous works have already explored the presence of microplastic (MP) in bottled drinking water as a source of MP intake. Here, we consider the release of MP particles from single-use PET mineral water bottles upon exposure to mechanical stress utilizing SEM plus EDS, which allows the implementation of morphological and elemental analysis of the plastic material surface and quantification of particle concentrations in sample water. The aim of this study was to better evaluate the sources of MP intake from plastic bottles, especially considering the effect of daily use on these bottles such as the abrasion of the plastic material. For that, we analysed MP release of PET bottlenecks and HDPE caps on their surfaces after a series of bottle openings/closings (1 x, 10 x, 100 x). Furthermore, we investigated, if the inner surface of the PET bottles released MPs, counted particle increase of the water and identified MPs in the PET bottled water after exposing the bottles to mechanical stress (squeezing treatment; none, 1 min, 10 min). The results showed a considerable increase of MP particle occurrence on the surface of PET and HDPE material (bottlenecks and caps) after opening and closing the bottles. After 100 times the effect was impressive, especially on caps. Moreover, great differences exist in cap abrasion between brands which uncovers a discrepancy in plastic behavior of brands. Interestingly, particle concentrations in the bottled mineral water did not significantly increase after exposure to mechanical stress (squeezing treatment). The morphological analysis of the inner wall surface of the bottles supported this observation, as no stress cracks could be detected after the treatment, implying that the bottles itself are not a consistent source of MP particles after this extent of mechanical stress. However, chances of MP ingestion by humans increase with frequent use of the same single-use plastic bottle, though only from the bottleneck-cap system.

Over the last 8 years, we have developed and evaluated a continuous-flow total artificial heart (CFTAH) comprising two rotary blood pumps. To understand the physiologic effects of nonpulsatile circulation, we evaluated the CFTAH in 65 calves for 90 days or less. We describe our experience with 29 calves that survived for 7 days or more. The calves received dual axial-flow (n = 24) or centrifugal-flow (n = 5) pumps. Several iterations of customized atrial cuffs were developed to facilitate an adequate anatomical fit. Pressures (arterial pressure [AoP], pulmonary artery pressure [PAP], left atrial pressure [LAP], and right atrial pressure [RAP]) and pump parameters were continuously monitored. Hematologic and biochemistry values were analyzed. After each case, a necropsy was performed. The calves survived for 7-92 days (mean, 24 days). Pressures were 94 ± 14 (AoP), 25 ± 8 (PAP), 14 ± 6 (RAP), and 16 ± 6 (LAP) mm Hg. Pump flow was maintained at 9.1 ± 1.7 L/minute (right) and 9.4 ± 1.9 L/minute (left). Hematologic and biochemistry values remained acceptable. Eight animals underwent treadmill evaluations, in which oxygen consumption (VO2) was comparable with physiologic total-body VO2. In the two animals that survived to 90 days, the end-organs appeared unremarkable at autopsy, and the CFTAH circuits were free of thrombus. Our results show that a CFTAH can maintain a large animal physiologically and hemodynamically for up to 90 days with continuous flow.

We evaluated the effects of steady state flow and perfusion on end-organ function in a long-term calf model. The animal received a continuous-flow total artificial heart (CFTAH) that we created from two axial-flow ventricular assist devices. Pump flow, blood pressure, and other pump parameters were monitored throughout the study, as were arterial blood gas and hematologic values, including neurohormone levels. Some hematologic values were mildly abnormal transiently after surgery but returned to acceptable levels within the first week. During the 90-day study, the calf showed no signs of hemolysis or thrombosis. Its mental function remained normal, as evidenced by the animal's interest in its surroundings and response to stimuli. End-organ and vasomotor function was not adversely affected by 90 days of steady state flow. This was the first study in which CFTAH support of an animal model was maintained for this duration.

Background We used contrast pericardiography during fluoroscopy to facilitate intrapericardial navigation in pigs. Methods In 8 juvenile pigs, we performed standard, noncontrast-enhanced fluoroscopy of the heart in an attempt to identify the location of the left and right atrial appendages, the atrioventricular (AV) groove, the coronary sinus, the superior and inferior vena cavae, and the right ventricular outflow tract. Then we injected ionic contrast into the pericardial space and repeated fluoroscopy. A subjective scoring sheet was used to grade the fluoroscopic image. Guided by the enhanced image, we placed a cardiac restraint device (CRD) around both ventricles. After 4 weeks, the pigs were humanely euthanized, and we examined the position of the CRD to verify that we had correctly identified the AV groove as well as the gross and histologic effects of intrapericardial contrast on the heart. Results Cardiac structures that were not visible on standard fluoroscopy could be delineated with substantially better clarity after intrapericardial injection of contrast. Postmortem examination showed that the CRD was positioned correctly at the AV groove and that contrast pericardiography was not associated with adverse topical effects. Conclusions Contrast pericardiography is a technique that greatly enhances one's ability to visualize the location and configuration of cardiac structures. We used this technique to accurately locate the AV groove and to aid us in the successful placement of a CRD. Improved fluoroscopic visualization of intrapericardial structures may facilitate the development of limited access and percutaneous intrapericardial interventions.

Although current continuous-flow total artificial hearts (CFTAHs) are much smaller than previous models, venous kinking may still occur after device implantation, especially in smaller animals. By inserting a self-expanding stent at the site of venous narrowing in a sheep model implanted with a CFTAH, we were able to restore the normal venous geometry and dramatically increase the CFTAH output. Because this percutaneous approach avoids the challenges associated with reoperation in these cases, it may be useful to other CFTAH investigators.

Notopterygium roots (Qiang Huo) have been used in traditional Chinese medicine for treating colds, inflammatory diseases like rheumatoid arthritis, and as an analgesic. The anti-inflammatory activity of the roots of Notopterygium incisum has been evaluated by testing the inhibitory activity on nitric oxide production by inducible nitric oxide synthase. The apparent authenticity of the sample was checked by DNA sequence comparison. Using activity-guided isolation, different compounds were isolated and structurally characterized by means of NMR and mass spectroscopy. Eight polyacetylenes could be identified and were tested on their inhibitory activity on nitric oxide production in RAW 264.7 mouse macrophages using the Griess assay. Different 3-hydroxy allyl polyacetylenes exhibited significant activity (IC50: 8-acetoxyfalcarinol, 20.1 µM; falcarindiol, 9.2 µM; 9-epoxyfalcarindiol, 8.8 µM; and crithmumdiol, 23.6 µM).

OBJECTIVE: To increase applicability and stability of aortic valve repair, a three-dimensional aortic annuloplasty ring has been developed for intra-annular placement. The goal of this study was to test the safety of this device with in vivo implantation in the calf model. METHODS: In 10 chronic calves, the HAART annuloplasty ring was sutured to the aortic valve annulus using cardiopulmonary bypass. The animals were recovered and followed for 1–2 months. Serial echocardiography was used to evaluate valve competence, and contrast aortograms and CT angiograms were obtained in selected animals. After completion of follow-up, each animal was euthanized, and aortic endoscopy was performed under water distension in five. Full autopsies with histologic examinations were performed. RESULTS: All animals survived surgery. Two were euthanized in the first week for complications, and the remaining eight calves were followed uneventfully for the 1–2 months. Serial echocardiography showed completely competent valves in all but one animal, in which the ring was intentionally up-sized to test the sizing strategy. Contrast aortographic and CT angiographic findings were similar to the echocardiograms. Postmortem examination showed proper seating of all rings with endothelialization at 1–2 months. All valves demonstrated good leaflet coaptation and no abnormalities. CONCLUSIONS: In vivo testing of a three-dimensional aortic annuloplasty ring in a chronic calf model proved to be very successful and safe. Using the sizing and implant strategies developed, human trials seem indicated.

We evaluated the in vivo performance of the Innovamedica pneumatic ventricular assist device (VAD), a new prototype of a simple, low-cost device for hospital circulatory support programs. We implanted the Innovamedica VAD in 6 sheep (weighing 55 to 91 kg). The inflow cannula was placed in the left ventricle, and the outflow cannula was anastomosed to the descending thoracic aorta. After heparinization (3mg/kg), we initiated the pump and monitored its hemodynamic performance for 6 hours. In a subsequent study we implanted the device for left ventricular support in two sheep for a 30-day period. We evaluated device performance based on implantation procedure, hemodynamic performance, and hematological impact. We monitored hematological and biochemical variables, and we assessed hemolysis. In the short-term experiments, the pumps maintained a mean blood flow of 4.4 ± 0.8 L/min. During support, mean arterial blood pressure was 76 ± 15 mmHg. The overall average concentration of plasma free hemoglobin was 5.11 ± 0.6 mg/dl compared with a baseline value of 4.52 ± 0.7 mg/dl. In the 30 day trials, mean blood output was 4 l/min ± 0.2, plasma free hemoglobin was 5.9 ± 4 mg/dl for the 30 day period excluding the first 48 hours. Warfarin/Aspirin anticoagulation was used after the first 72 hours with an average INR of 2.9 for the entire test period. Post-mortem showed no blood clots or any significant tissue damage to brain, lungs or kidneys. The devices operated without any significant adverse events in all of the experiments. The Innovamedica VAD was easy to implant and de-air and was found to be effective, reliable and biocompatible.

The development and clinical use of continuous-flow left ventricular assist devices (LVADs) stimulated our interest in developing a total heart replacement with continuous-flow rotary blood pumps. We constructed a continuous-flow total artificial heart (CFTAH) from 2 HeartMate II axial-flow LVADs and used this CFTAH to replace the native heart of a calf. The purpose of this experiment was to study the effects of total continuous flow on physiologic parameters at rest and during exercise after the animal recovered from surgery. We monitored pulmonary and systemic pump performance, and we assessed arterial blood gases, hemodynamic and biochemical variables, and neurohormone levels during the 7 weeks of CFTAH support. At day 36 after CFTAH implantation, the calf was exercised on a treadmill at increasing speeds for 40 minutes; total oxygen consumption, pump flow, blood pressure, and respiratory rate were monitored. Baseline hematologic levels were altered postoperatively but returned to normal by 2 weeks. We saw no signs of hemolysis or thrombosis during CFTAH support. The calf had a normal physiologic response to treadmill exercise. The animal gained weight and appeared to function normally during the study. The CFTAH operated within design specifications throughout the study. Homeostasis, end-organ and vasomotor function, and the ability to exercise are not adversely affected by 7 weeks of totally pulseless circulation in a calf.

Chronic ventilatory support may be required for survival after total artificial heart (TAH) implantation in calves. However, prolonged or repeated intubation may negatively affect a calf's ability to eat, drink, ruminate, and stand after surgery. To mitigate these limitations, we performed tracheotomies on 23 consecutive calves at the time of TAH implantation. The tracheostomies served as the primary route for ventilatory support and airway management. Tracheostomies were left in place for up to 25 days (mean, 7 +/- 7 days) and were well tolerated. Prolonged presence of a tracheostomy facilitated cleaning of the airway secretions and did not inhibit the calf's ability to stand, eat, or drink. The calves survived from 2 to 49 days (mean, 8 days). Twenty-two calves that maintained their tracheostomies died of causes unrelated to airway management. The calf that had the tracheostomy removed on day 25 died of respiratory arrest on day 49. At necropsy, we found that severe tracheal stenosis had developed at the tracheostomy site. In calves, an elective tracheotomy can be a valuable adjunct to TAH implantation or other procedures that might require prolonged ventilatory support or airway access, but care should be exercised if the tracheostomy is removed to ensure that the calf does not develop late tracheal stenosis.
