The establishment of the piscivorous lionfishPteroisspp. in the Western Atlantic and wider Caribbean is a well-documented example of a successful marine invasion. Recently, lionfish have been shown to colonise a wide range of ecosystems and tolerate a wider range of salinities than previously thought. In the present study, lionfish were maintained in aquaria under differing salinity treatments (10, 20 and 37 psu) similar to those they might experience in an estuarine ecosystem. The effects of long-term hyposaline exposure on growth, metabolic rate, maximum food consumption and digestion were examined. Consistent with previous studies, lionfish were able to survive in hyposaline conditions for extended periods of time. However, lionfish in the most hyposaline treatment (10 psu) exhibited reduced growth under low food conditions, lower maximum metabolic rate, lower aerobic scope, lower maximum food consumption, took longer to digest a standardized meal size and occupied a greater percentage of their aerobic scope during digestion. Results suggest that (1) given the ability of lionfish to tolerate low salinity, updated range expansion models should incorporate salinity data to improve accuracy of predicted range expansion and (2) the invasion of lionfish into low salinity ecosystems, although a serious concern, will not likely lead to the same level of population increase observed for coral reef habitats due to the physiological costs associated with living in low salinities.

Feeding performance represents a suite of kinematic events and behaviors that achieve the ecologically relevant task of nutrient acquisition. Quantitative accounts of feeding kinematics in large wild sharks are scarce but essential in understanding the ecomorphology of feeding in selachian fishes. This study presents quantitative and qualitative data on bite kinematics and feeding behavior in the Bull Shark, Carcharhinus leucas, using high-speed videography of wild specimens at Cape Eleuthera, The Bahamas. Our results support the hypothesis that bites of carcharhinid sharks, including C. leucas, follow a stereotyped sequence of kinematic events. However, there are interspecific variations in timing and duration of these events. The mean bite duration of 46 recorded bites by Bull Sharks approximately 1.4 m to 1.6 m in total length was 0.29±0.006 s. Bite duration did not vary significantly among the seven study animals, although it was negatively correlated with the angle, or pitch, at which sharks approached food items. The timing of upper jaw protrusion during the bite was correlated with the proximity of conspecifics. We discuss our results in the context of interspecific comparisons of bite performance among macrophagous, ram-feeding elasmobranchs and conclude that body size alone is not sufficient to explain interspecific variations in bite duration. We also discuss the benefits of field-based studies of feeding in sharks as an important complement to more traditional lab-based studies of performance.

REPLYING TO H. Murua et al. Nature https://doi.org/10.1038/s41586-021-03396-4 (2021) Our previously published paper1 provided global fine-scale spatiotemporal estimates (1° × 1°; monthly) of overlap and fishing exposure risk (FEI) between satellite-tracked shark space use and automatic identification system (AIS) longline fishing effort. We did not assess shark mortality directly, but in addition to replying to the Comment by Murua et al.2, we confirm—using regression analysis of spatially matched data—that fishing-induced pelagic shark mortality (catch per unit effort (CPUE)) is greater where FEI is higher. We focused on assessing shark horizontal spatiotemporal overlap and exposure risk with fisheries because spatial overlap is a major driver of fishing capture susceptibility and previous shark ecological risk assessments (ERAs) assumed a homogenous shark density within species-range distributions3,4,5 or used coarse-scale modelled occurrence data, rather than more ecologically realistic risk estimates in heterogeneous habitats that were selected by sharks over time. Furthermore, our shark spatial exposure risk implicitly accounts for other susceptibility factors with equal or similar probabilities to those commonly used in shark ERAs3,5.

REPLYING TO A. V. Harry & J. M. Braccini Nature https://doi.org/10.1038/s41586-021-03463-w (2021) Our global analysis1 estimated the overlap and fishing exposure risk (FEI) using the space use of satellite-tracked sharks and longline fishing effort monitored by the automatic identification system (AIS). In the accompanying Comment, Harry and Braccini2 draw attention to two localized shark–longline vessel overlap hotspots in Australian waters, stating that 47 fishing vessels were misclassified as longline and purse seine vessels in the Global Fishing Watch (GFW)3 2012–2016 AIS fishing effort data product that we used. This, they propose2, results in misidentifications that highlight fishing exposure hotspots that are subject to an unexpected level of sensitivity in the analysis and they suggest that misidentifications could broadly affect the calculations of fishing exposure and the central conclusions of our study1. We acknowledged in our previously published paper1 that gear reclassifications were likely to occur for a small percentage of the more than 70,000 vessels studied, however, here we demonstrate that even using much larger numbers of vessel reclassifications than those proposed by Harry and Braccini2, the central results and conclusions of our paper1 do not change.

Biofouling is a significant issue on marine aquaculture pens and is conservatively estimated to contribute to 15% of production costs. With a global increase in the demand for sustainable aquaculture products a search for sustainable non-toxic alternatives to chemical treatment and manual removal of biofouling organisms, such as biological control, are becoming more sought after. In the laboratory experiments Caribbean spider crabs (Maguimithrax spinosissimus) exhibited nocturnal patterns of activity. They consumed between 3.3 and 4.16% bodyweight (BW) of algae in 22–24 °C water, and between 5.61 and 8.55% BW in 26–28 °C water. Although this species is primarily herbivorous they also readily consumed whole fish (Lutjanus apodus). The spider crabs were placed on a heavily fouled, unoccupied SeaStation 3000 cage offshore of Eleuthera, The Bahamas, to determine their ability to remove fouling organisms. Large crabs (382 g – 1344 g) confined in mesh cages on the outside of the pen effectively removed between 40% (after two weeks), and 90% (after four weeks) of fouling organisms. Crabs were more effective at removing growth than manual scrubbing by a diver. Grazing by the crabs was non-discriminatory, with no significant change in the proportional makeup of epibionts at the end of the trial. The survival rates of crabs inside the cage varied between 50% and 55% when not including escapees, and between 66% and 94% when including escapees during 3 to 6 month trials, with no significant decline in health status (blood protein levels). The Caribbean spider crab is a good candidate both economically and environmentally for controlling biofouling on aquaculture cages, could be used in multi-trophic aquaculture systems, and marketed as an environmentally friendly seafood.

Somatic growth is an integrated, individual-based response to environmental conditions, especially in ectotherms. Growth dynamics of large, mobile animals are particularly useful as bio-indicators of environmental change at regional scales. We assembled growth rate data from throughout the West Atlantic for green turtles, Chelonia mydas, which are long-lived, highly migratory, primarily herbivorous mega-consumers that may migrate over hundreds to thousands of kilometers. Our dataset, the largest ever compiled for sea turtles, has 9690 growth increments from 30 sites from Bermuda to Uruguay from 1973 to 2015. Using generalized additive mixed models, we evaluated covariates that could affect growth rates; body size, diet, and year have significant effects on growth. Growth increases in early years until 1999, then declines by 26% to 2015. The temporal (year) effect is of particular interest because two carnivorous species of sea turtles-hawksbills, Eretmochelys imbricata, and loggerheads, Caretta caretta-exhibited similar significant declines in growth rates starting in 1997 in the West Atlantic, based on previous studies. These synchronous declines in productivity among three sea turtle species across a trophic spectrum provide strong evidence that an ecological regime shift (ERS) in the Atlantic is driving growth dynamics. The ERS resulted from a synergy of the 1997/1998 El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO)-the strongest on record-combined with an unprecedented warming rate over the last two to three decades. Further support is provided by the strong correlations between annualized mean growth rates of green turtles and both sea surface temperatures (SST) in the West Atlantic for years of declining growth rates (r = -.94) and the Multivariate ENSO Index (MEI) for all years (r = .74). Granger-causality analysis also supports the latter finding. We discuss multiple stressors that could reinforce and prolong the effect of the ERS. This study demonstrates the importance of region-wide collaborations.

The legend of the “kraken” has captivated humans for millennia, yet our knowledge of the large deep-sea cephalopods that inspired this myth remains limited. Conventional methods for exploring the deep sea, including the use of nets, manned submersibles, and remotely operated vehicles (ROVs), are primarily suited for studying slow-moving or sessile organisms, and baited camera-traps tend to attract scavengers rather than predators. To address these issues, unobtrusive deep-sea camera platforms were developed that used low-light cameras, red illuminators, and bioluminescence-mimicking lures. Here, we report on several opportunistic deployments of these devices in the Wider Caribbean Region where we recorded several encounters with large deep-sea squids, including the giant squid Architeuthis dux Steenstrup 1857, Pholidoteuthis adami Voss 1956, and two large squid that may be Promachoteuthis sp. (possibly P. sloani Young et al. 2006). These species were recorded between depths of 557 and 950 m. We estimate the Mantle Lengths (ML) of Promachoteuthis were ~1.0 m, the ML of the Pholidoteuthis was ~0.5 m, and the ML of the Archtiteuthis was ~1.7 m. These encounters suggest that unobtrusive camera platforms with luminescent lures are effective tools for attracting and studying large deep-sea squids.

Comprehension of ecological processes in marine animals requires information regarding dynamic vertical habitat use. While many pelagic predators primarily associate with epipelagic waters, some species routinely dive beyond the deep scattering layer. Actuation for exploiting these aphotic habitats remains largely unknown. Recent telemetry data from oceanic whitetip sharks (Carcharhinus longimanus) in the Atlantic show a strong association with warm waters (>20°C) less than 200 m. Yet, individuals regularly exhibit excursions into the meso‐ and bathypelagic zone. In order to examine deep‐diving behavior in oceanic whitetip sharks, we physically recovered 16 pop‐up satellite archival tags and analyzed the high‐resolution depth and temperature data. Diving behavior was evaluated in the context of plausible functional behavior hypotheses including interactive behaviors, energy conservation, thermoregulation, navigation, and foraging. Mesopelagic excursions (n = 610) occurred throughout the entire migratory circuit in all individuals, with no indication of site specificity. Six depth‐versus‐time descent and ascent profiles were identified. Descent profile shapes showed little association with examined environmental variables. Contrastingly, ascent profile shapes were related to environmental factors and appear to represent unique behavioral responses to abiotic conditions present at the dive apex. However, environmental conditions may not be the sole factors influencing ascents, as ascent mode may be linked to intentional behaviors. While dive functionality remains unconfirmed, our study suggests that mesopelagic excursions relate to active foraging behavior or navigation. Dive timing, prey constituents, and dive shape support foraging as the most viable hypothesis for mesopelagic excursions, indicating that the oceanic whitetip shark may regularly survey extreme environments (deep depths, low temperatures) as a foraging strategy. At the apex of these deep‐water excursions, sharks exhibit a variable behavioral response, perhaps, indicating the presence or absence of prey.

Species invasions are a widely-recognized threat to regional and global biodiversity. Lionfish (Pterois spp.), are an invasive marine fish that have been shown to reduce the recruitment and biomass of native reef fish throughout the Caribbean. Recently, it has become clear that lionfish are able to colonise a wide range of ecosystems (mesophotic reefs to brackish estuaries to mangroves) and tolerate a wider range of salinities than previously thought. Estuarine ecosystems often experience hyposaline conditions and act as critical foraging habitats for many ecologically and economically important species. Using a habitat competition experiment at two salinity treatments (10 practical salinity units (psu) and 37 psu control) we investigated the potential effects of lionfish on native Schoolmaster snapper (Lutjanus apodus; a tropical fish species found in high abundance in estuarine ecosystems). Schoolmaster snapper showed a 62% and 47% reduction in cover use when in the presence of lionfish in the 10 psu and 37 psu treatments, respectively. Further, five of the seven behaviours investigated during the interaction period, where both lionfish and snapper had access to the shelter, showed a significant reduction at low salinity, suggesting physiological or behavioural impairment of lionfish at low salinity. Because estuarine habitats are disproportionately important habitats for juvenile fishes, even physiologically or behaviourally compromised lionfish are likely to have some impact.

This study measured spatial distribution of marine debris stranded on beaches in South Eleuthera, The Bahamas. Citizen science, fetch modeling, relative exposure index and predictive mapping were used to determine marine debris source and abundance. Citizen scientists quantified debris type and abundance on 16 beaches within three coastal exposures (The Atlantic Ocean, Great Bahama Bank and The Exuma Sound) in South Eleuthera. Marine debris, (~2.5 cm or larger) on each beach was monitored twice between March–May and September–November 2013 at the same locations using GPS. Approximately, 93% of all debris items were plastic with plastic fragments (≤2.5 cm) being the most common. There were spatial differences (p ≤ 0.0001) in plastic debris abundance between coastal exposures. Atlantic Ocean beaches had larger quantities of plastic debris by weight and by meter (m) of shoreline. Stranded plastic may be associated with Atlantic Ocean currents associated with leakage from the North Atlantic sub-tropical gyre.

Effective ocean management and the conservation of highly migratory species depend on resolving the overlap between animal movements and distributions, and fishing effort. However, this information is lacking at a global scale. Here we show, using a big-data approach that combines satellite-tracked movements of pelagic sharks and global fishing fleets, that 24% of the mean monthly space used by sharks falls under the footprint of pelagic longline fisheries. Space-use hotspots of commercially valuable sharks and of internationally protected species had the highest overlap with longlines (up to 76% and 64%, respectively), and were also associated with significant increases in fishing effort. We conclude that pelagic sharks have limited spatial refuge from current levels of fishing effort in marine areas beyond national jurisdictions (the high seas). Identifying the driving forces behind oceanic pelagic shark movements is key to a bet- ter understanding of their life history. Some oceanic pelagic shark species have been shown to ag- gregate in specific regions to mate and/or exploit abundant food resources. The oceanic whitetip shark Carcharhinus longimanus, a subtropical, ectothermic, oceanic pelagic shark that has experi- enced severe population declines, aggregates seasonally around Cat Island (CI) in The Bahamas. Large pelagic teleosts (e.g. billfish, tunas, and dolphinfish) are abundant in this region and oceanic whitetips are anecdotally reported to feed heavily on recreationally caught teleosts. However, it was unknown whether feeding habits at CI substantially differ from longer-term feeding habits. We used tag-recapture to assess site-fidelity of adult oceanic whitetips to CI and stable isotope analysis (SIA) of 2 different tissues (blood plasma and white muscle) to compare short- and long-term feeding patterns. The relatively high recapture rate (20.3%) confirmed that individual whitetips ex- hibit site-fidelity to CI. The aggregation consisted of adult individuals; females were more common, more than half were gravid, and no physical or behavioral evidence of mating or parturition was ob- served at CI. SIA-based Bayesian mixing model estimates of short-term (near CI) diets showed more large pelagic teleosts (72%) than in long-term diets (47%), showing a spatiotemporal differ- ence in oceanic whitetip feeding habits. This suggests that availability of large teleost prey is a possible mechanism underpinning site-fidelity and aggregation of whitetips at CI. These results provide insight into the function of one of the last known aggregations of this once-abundant top predator.

Species invasions have a range of negative effects on recipient ecosystems, and many occur at a scale and magnitude that preclude complete eradication. When complete extirpation is unlikely with available management resources, an effective strategy may be to suppress invasive populations below levels predicted to cause undesirable ecological change. We illustrated this approach by developing and testing targets for the control of invasive Indo-Pacific lionfish (Pterois volitans and P. miles) on Western Atlantic coral reefs. We first developed a size-structured simulation model of predation by lionfish on native fish communities, which we used to predict threshold densities of lionfish beyond which native fish biomass should decline. We then tested our predictions by experimentally manipulating lionfish densities above or below reef-specific thresholds, and monitoring the consequences for native fish populations on 24 Bahamian patch reefs over 18 months. We found that reducing lionfish below predicted threshold densities effectively protected native fish community biomass from predation-induced declines. Reductions in density of 25–92%, depending on the reef, were required to suppress lionfish below levels predicted to overconsume prey. On reefs where lionfish were kept below threshold densities, native prey fish biomass increased by 50–70%. Gains in small (6 cm) size classes of native fishes translated into lagged increases in larger size classes over time. The biomass of larger individuals (15 cm total length), including ecologically important grazers and economically important fisheries species, had increased by 10–65% by the end of the experiment. Crucially, similar gains in prey fish biomass were realized on reefs subjected to partial and full removal of lionfish, but partial removals took 30% less time to implement. By contrast, the biomass of small native fishes declined by50% on all reefs with lionfish densities exceeding reef-specific thresholds. Large inter-reef variation in the biomass of prey fishes at the outset of the study, which influences the threshold density of lionfish, means that we could not identify a single rule of thumb for guiding control efforts. However, our model provides a method for setting reef-specific targets for population control using local monitoring data. Our work is the first to demonstrate that for ongoing invasions, suppressing invaders below densities that cause environmental harm can have a similar effect, in terms of protecting the native ecosystem on a local scale, to achieving complete eradication.

Biologging and tracking instruments provide valuable, remote surveillance on otherwise unobservable marine animals. Instruments can be consumed (ingested) by predators while collecting data, and if not identified, the retrieved dataset could be assigned to the incorrect individual and/or species. Consumption events of instruments, such as pop-up satellite archival tags and data loggers that record ambient light, are typically identified by negligible light levels and visual assessment of data records. However, when light-level data are not available (e.g., environments below the euphotic zone, instrument model), instrument consumption is not easily discernible. Instruments that record concurrent, time-series temperature and depth data provide detailed information on the ambient temperature in the water column. However, if the instrument is consumed, the temperature profile may dissociate from the depth profile, providing evidence and a means for detecting consumption. To quantify the dissociation between time-series depth and temperature profiles, we applied the cross-correlation function to evaluate the time delay and uncoupling between time-series depth and temperature profiles, suggestive of instrument consumption. Given that instruments may be consumed midway through the deployment duration, we extended the cross-correlation function to systematically slide across time-series profiles, sequentially considering subsets of data, to infer time of consumption. This method was applied to datasets from both deep-water (disphotic and aphotic) and epipelagic (euphotic) environments to evaluate instrument consumption. Results were dependent on ambient environment, data sampling rate, predator physiology, and function parameters. Utilization of the cross-correlation function objectively indicates potential instrument consumption events without the bias induced by subjective methods such as visual assessment of tag-recorded data, and does not require the simultaneous collection of light-level data. This methodology aids in the appropriate biological interpretation of tag-recorded data, ensures that data are not attributed to the incorrect species, and can be used to authenticate data during the validation process. Additionally, it is particularly useful for contrasting datasets from comparable studies (i.e., same location and species) and is applicable across taxa and electronic biologging instrument variations.

Oceanic whitetip sharks (Carcharhinus longimanus) have recently been targeted for conservation in the western North Atlantic following severe declines in abundance. Pop-up satellite archival tags were applied to 11 mature oceanic whitetips (10 females, 1 male) near Cat Island in the central Bahamas 1-8 May 2011 to provide information about the horizontal and vertical movements of this species. Another large female was opportunistically tagged in the U.S. Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ). Data from 1,563 total tracking days and 1,142,598 combined depth and temperature readings were obtained. Sharks tagged at Cat Island stayed within 500 km of the tagging site for ~30 days before dispersing across 16,422 km(2) of the western North Atlantic. Maximum individual displacement from the tagging site ranged from 290-1940 km after times at liberty from 30-245 days, with individuals moving to several different destinations (the northern Lesser Antilles, the northern Bahamas, and north of the Windward Passage). Many sharks returned to The Bahamas after ~150 days. Estimated residency times within The Bahamas EEZ, where longlining and commercial trade of sharks is illegal, were generally high (mean = 68.2% of time). Sharks spent 99.7% of their time shallower than 200 m and did not exhibit differences in day and night mean depths. There was a positive correlation between daily sea surface temperature and mean depth occupied, suggesting possible behavioral thermoregulation. All individuals made short duration (mean = 13.06 minutes) dives into the mesopelagic zone (down to 1082 m and 7.75°C), which occurred significantly more often at night. Ascent rates during these dives were significantly slower than descent rates, suggesting that these dives are for foraging. The sharks tracked appear to be most vulnerable to pelagic fishing gear deployed from 0-125 m depths, which they may encounter from June to October after leaving the protected waters of The Bahamas EEZ.
