Abstract

This article shows how some of the limned letters exchanged between the British court and “Eastern princes” throughout the early modern period may be considered as diplomatic gifts and counter-gifts, by looking into their careful manufacture, the ceremonials around them and their political purpose. The first part of the article is devoted to the advent of this richly ornamented correspondence in Elizabethan England before its perpetuation and near-codification under the reign of James I. The second part of the article proposes a material and visual analysis of these letters in terms of both creation and reception, in order to compare them with other diplomatic gifts. Finally, the article looks at some of the limners responsible for decorating these letters, as well as the techniques they used, the better to understand how the curious art of limning lent itself particularly well to this intense international conversation and exchange of gifts and counter-gifts in epistolary form.

Abstract

The present paper explores the various types of painters and artists mentioned by John Webster in The Duchess of Malfi. Much like the poisoned portrait in The White Devil, some of the painted and sculpted images that appear in The Duchess of Malfi seem endowed with equally terrifying power over whoever looks at them. Why do some pictures become perfidious in the tragedy? The play recurrently offers descriptions of how images are designed, focusing on the very material from which they are made and upon which they are impressed. Starting from an analysis of the material circumstances of picture-making as shown or described in the play, my contention is that Webster emphasizes the difference between metal crafts and ductile materials, which in turn opens onto a reflection upon time and sound in the creative process, thereby accounting for the pictures’ varying degrees of agency and toxicity.

Abstract

The present article explores the polysemy of “lustre” in two treatises on limning by Nicholas Hilliard and Edward Norgate. It first lists all uses of the word in these texts in order to offer historically specific definitions of “lustre” in both the practice and theory developed by these specialists of portrait miniatures. This preliminary investigation concludes on the essential although non-intrinsic link between colour and lustre, which finally leads to the study of the mimetic import of a word taken alternately or simultaneously as a technique and a concept.

Abstract

Following his arrival at Jahangir’s imperial court, Thomas Roe – the first duly accredited English ambassador to India – presented the Emperor with a miniature by Isaac Oliver, a gift deemed worthy of the occasion by Wazir Asaf Khan. As he recalls and writes about the episode, Roe explains that he had taken with him ‘a pickture of a frend of myne that I esteemed very much, and was for Curiositye rare, which I would giue his Maiestie as a present, seeing hee so much affected that art.’ The Mogul Emperor’s ‘Cheefe Paynter’, upon discovering Oliver’s work and hearing Roe’s public paean to the artist’s skills, wagers he can paint as well as the English limner. The quality of the copies accordingly brought to Roe some days later is such that the episode ends with James’s ambassador being offered to ‘choose any of these Coppies to show in England wee are not so unskillfull as you esteeme us.’Although this lesson in ethnocentrism has often been discussed and commented upon by historians, one question still remains partly unanswered: why would the ambassador choose a miniature, of all formats, to (re)present himself and his country? Starting from this highly revealing moment of political performance and negotiation in The Embassy, I would like to enquire into the techniques and significance of limning to try and understand why miniatures would feature both among curiosities and political negotiations between East and West.

Abstract

Although Tom Stoppard’s Arcadia only seems to share a title with Sidney’s Elizabethan pastoral romances, the two works prove to raise common questions. The present article does not aim at uncovering echoes of Sidney’s Arcadias in Stoppard’s play but explores the Arcadian place as a contradictory space built upon jarring geographical and literary assumptions. From Sidley Park to Kalander and Basilius’s houses, Arcadian country-houses convey both a poetic potential and a political reflexion on their foundations. Hinging upon recent criticisms voiced by cultural materialists, the frontiers and boundaries of both representations of the Arcadia are here questioned and paralleled.

Abstract

My contention in this paper is to try and probe into King Lear’s heath and Antony and Cleopatra’s « Nilus » as the only true — if moving and changeable — spaces for vision to occur. The visual field metaphor as such is thus to be replaced by that of a visual and paradoxically invisible space. Such uncommon « places » allow the audience to experience vision as a necessarily incomplete perceptual process. One is carried away within the very sensory texture of the world so that no hindsight or proper perspective can ever be drawn. By displaying a proto-phenomenological conception of optics, these two plays invite the reader to peer beyond and through them from a historical point of view. One may indeed sense the distant though lingering influence of Lucretius and Giordano Bruno’s views on vision and perception. The very word « influence » proves all the more telling when bearing in mind its former and original cosmological meaning whereby it applied to the liquid emanation of stars, accounting for their impact on the sublunary world. The main transformation undergone by vision in Shakespeare’s plays consists in having metaphors of flowing and liquefied matter to describe perception instead of resorting to the traditional scholastic tradition of rays of light and fire. Not only do Shakespearean eyes subvert the then common solar « burning » visual fields, they also lead to a radically anti-Aristotelian definition of space as being infiltrated by time and therefore submitted to the changing phases of the « moist star ».

9. Exchanging Royal Portraits Between France and England in the 1570s: The Politics of Scale

Abstract

This article centres around Nicholas Hilliard and Sir Philip Sidney’s discussion of scale and proportion, as it is reported in The Arte of Limning. I argue that although the conversation has heretofore mainly been read as an echo of Sidney’s interest in Continental humanistic art theories, it may also allude to previous diplomatic and political negotiations between France and England in which the two men were involved. Looking into diplomatic correspondence and various portraits by the Clouets and Nicholas Hilliard, one quickly realises how the expression of age and height was central to all forms and formats of political portraiture on both sides of the Channel, thereby making it even more crucial and possibly challenging for artists working on smaller scales. I thus turn to Hilliard’s description of his workshop procedure to see how he incorporated such issues of scale into his own practice. This finally leads me to analyse the importance of time in all measurements—as empirical as they may be—favoured by the limner and reassess the profoundly political issue of discerning a tall man from a little man on pictures in small volume.

Also exploring Shakespeare’s borrowings, Anne-Valérie Dulac turns to optics and takes Love’s Labour’s Lost as her departure point. She first reminds us that in her Study of Love’s Labour’s Lost, published in 1936, Frances Yates repeatedly mentions the importance of Ahazen’s optical theory in grasping the play’s many references to light, eyes, and vision. Dulac first deals with two mistakes made by Yates in her rather short description of the 1572 edition of the Opticae Thesaurus, a compendium including a truncated Latin version of Alhazen’s treatise along with Witelo’s Perspectiva. She then demonstrates that this was due to the fact that, at the time when Yates was writing, historians of science had not yet shown as forcefully how different the translations of the Kitab al-Manazir (The Books of Optics) are, or, in other words, how different Alhazen is from Alhacen and Ibn al-Haytham. Dulac eventually looks into the Latinised version of Alhazen’s optical theory to enquire into whether it could shed light on some of the most intricate metaphorical networks of the play.

Abstract

The present article aims at showing how Sir Philip Sidney’s two versions of the Arcadia deal with the issue of masculinity. Patricia Fumerton’s propositions about the parallels between Hilliard’s miniatures and Sidney’s sonnets are here confronted to the two pastoral romances, which seem to have retained a rather similar approach to the idea of ornament. The issue of disguises and ornamental attributes of one’s sex in the old and new Arcadia, compared with the limner’s vision of the same, thus turn to prove central in understanding the fascinating complexities of sex in Sidney’s original and revised works.

Although a number of more or less recent studies of Love’s Labour’s Lost have documented the optical dimension of vision and light-related metaphors in the play, little has been said about how visual perception also relates to a network of economic transactions. The present article explores the ways in which the economy of vision in Love’s Labour’s Lost gives rise to a paradoxical vision of economy. Si la dimension optique des métaphores de la vision et de la lumière ont déjà fait l’objet de plusieurs études plus ou moins récentes consacrées à Love’s Labour’s Lost, le lien qui unit la perception visuelle aux nombreuses transactions économiques qui jalonnent la pièce a plus rarement été isolé et analysé. Le présent article retrace la façon dont l’économie de la vision dessine aussi une vision paradoxale de l’économie.

Abstract

L’histoire des sciences, sous l’impulsion des travaux pionniers de Roshdi Rashed en France, par exemple, a récemment exploré les canaux de transmission de la science arabe à l’Europe latine dès le Moyen Âge. Ces échanges ont été particulièrement fructueux dans le cas de l’optique, dont l’œuvre d’Ibn al-Haytham a déterminé le développement ultérieur en Europe. Le motif obsédant de l’œil, qui hante les sonnets composés en Europe à l’époque moderne, porte-t-il en son cœur des traces de ces circulations ? À l’appui des Sonnets de Shakespeare, le présent article retrace les possibles résurgences de la théorie intromissioniste telle qu’elle apparaît chez Alhacen dans la matière poétique du texte shakespearien. Historians of science such as Roshdi Rashed in France have recently uncovered the prominent part played by Arabic scientific works circulating around Europe from the Middle Ages onwards. In this regard, the history of optics proves remarkably telling inasmuch as Ibn al-Haytham’s groundbreaking treatise served as a major source of inspiration to later European scientists. Can the recurring eye motif in early modern poetry be seen as echoing these scientific negotiations? The present paper, using Shakespeare’s Sonnets, is an attempt at finding echoes of Alhacen’s intromission theory within Shakespeare’s poetic material.

L’art de la miniature reste le domaine privilegie, dans le second xvie siecle, des artistes anglais. Nicholas Hilliard, representant le plus eminent de cette pratique picturale, echappe tout a fait a l’ideal defendu par Alberti, Vasari ou Durer de la peinture comme fenetre transparente donnant a voir l’illusion parfaite du monde visible. Mais Hilliard, loin de nier la primaute du milieu transparent dans l’acte perceptif, en concoit en realite une image peut-etre heritee partiellement de l’optique d’Ibn al-Haytham qui classe la transparence parmi les categories renouvelees du visible.

International audience; Berowne’s feeble defense, when challenged by the King, that his vow to fast and remain celibate for three years at the court of Navarre was made “in jest” (I.i.54) ushers in a pattern of authorial obfuscation concerning whether characters’ statements are to be taken at face value or as jokes. Though Shakespeare withholds conclusive textual evidence, such indeterminacies cannot easily be shrugged off as “hors-texte”, as they are given prominence in the play by providing backbone to the plot, which can broadly be read as the women’s attempt to gauge the young men’s seriousness and reliability, and also through alignment with contemporary legal debates around the issues of criminal intention and equity. With its invocation of courtroom hermeneutics, the play suggests that performative reconstruction is the key to establishing a fictional speaker’s intention. Such reconstruction, in the playhouse as in the courtroom, implies a projection of new standards onto an old text. Ultimately, then, Love’s Labour’s Lost’s dubious jests highlight the contigency of moral values, and their fragility.; Lorsque le roi de Navarre rappelle à Berowne qu’il a juré de passer trois années de jeune et de célibat à la cour, celui-ci répond que ce serment n’était que simple boutade. Sur le même modèle, on relève dans la pièce une récurrence d’énoncés dont le niveau de sérieux est difficile à jauger. Si le texte ne permet pas de trancher, ces ambiguïtés ne peuvent pas non plus être reléguées au « hors-texte », dans la mesure où la pièce les met en exergue, d’abord en les associant au mouvement de l’intrigue (qu’on peut assimiler aux efforts déployés par les quatre jeunes femmes pour éprouver le sérieux des jeunes lords), mais aussi en les rapportant aux discussions juridiques de l’époque portant sur l’intention criminelle et sur l’équité. Par son invocation de l’herméneutique juridique, la pièce laisse entendre que c’est à travers un processus de reconstruction qu’apparaît l’intention du locuteur. Que ce soit au tribunal ou au théâtre, une telle reconstruction sous-entend une projection de normes nouvelles sur un texte ancien. En définitive, les plaisanteries ambiguës de Love’s Labour’s Lost mettent en évidence la contingence des valeurs morales, ainsi que leur fragilité.
