The thin Hf(sub 0.6)Si(sub 0.4)O(sub x) and Hf(sub 0.3)Al(sub 0.7)O(sub x) films, which are fabricated by metal-organic chemical-vapor deposition and atomic-layer-deposition techniques, are characterized using monoenergetic positron beams. The results show that positron annihilation parameter is sensitive to change in the matrix structure of amorphous high-k materials and can be used to determine process parameters for the fabrication of high-k gate dielectrics.

The kinetics of diffusion-controlled triplet-triplet annihilation (TTA) and simultaneous delayed fluorescence (DF) of meso-tetraphenylporphyrin (TTP) in thin films (1-100 nm) of n-decanol (DEC) were studied. The apparent rate of TTA in neat DEC and further temperature decrease down to 260 K whereas that in DEC monolayers does not exist.

Research was conducted to examine thermal donor (TD) formation and annihilation at temperatures above 500 degrees c in Czochralski (CZ)-grown silicon. CZ-grown Si samples with an initial total TD concentration of ~5 x 10 to the 15th power/cm3 were used to study the annihilation of TDs. Results indicate that a model in which the individual TDx centers are represented by oxygen clusters of different sizes consistently explains the experimental data.

Research was conducted on production and annihilation defects caused by 50 eVSi irradiation of (2x1)-terminated Si(001) using molecular dynamics and quasidynamics simulations. Exchange epitaxy events were observed. Further observations also revealed that primary residual lattice defects were split andhexagonal interstitials. Experimental data provided sufficient information on projectile incorporation, surface reactions, defect formation, residual defects, trajectories and defect annihilation.

A Large Angle Multiplicity Detector (LAMD) system composed of 240 ion implanted silicon photodiodes arranged in 12 pad arrays was developed to measure the charged particle multiplicity distributions from the energetic antiproton beam. The design and performance of the LAMD system were evaluated using extensive bench tests. Results show that the system can accurately measure multiplicity distributions.

The annihilation process of a VBL pair caused by the injection of a BP, one of the processes proposed for VBL write function in the VBL memory, was investigated by micromagnetic calculation in three dimensions. The BP, which was nucleated on the film-top surface (near the write conductor) at the center of the VBL pair, was observed to move down inside the film while annihilating the VBL pair. When the current in the write conductor was large, the BP appeared not only on the film-top surface, but also within the film and on the film bottom surface.

Numerical simulation is used to examine the influence of various annihilation processes on the laser threshold current density of a multilayer organic laser diode. The analysis has shown that the ratio of the rate coefficients for single-triplet and triplet-triplet annihilations is vital for the total number of singlet excitons being quenched by triplet excitons.

A method for quantification of annihilation rates is developed based on measurements of diffusional profile spreading of a foreign species by using isotropically labeled silicon implanted into a silicon matrix. The maximum-likelihood estimation provides rigorous estimates of the annihilation rates and the associated confidence intervals.

A Q-tensor method is used to model a grating-aligned zenithally bistable nematic device in two dimensions. The flexoelectrically driven switching between the two ground states is shown to occur through the creation and annihilation of pairs of defects, and the sign and magnitude of the voltage thresholds demonstrated to depend on the relative dielectric permittivity of the grating material.

The temperature stability of vertical Bloch lines (VBL) in the domain walls of three kinds of hard domains in uncompressed states is investigated. The general rule of the VBL annihilation under the influence of temperature in the walls of hard domains is found.

A study was conducted, by using the Lorentz transmission electron microscopy and micromagnetic simulations, to investigate the magnetic properties of flat permalloy cylinders. The result reveals that the magnetization reversal of the cylindrically shaped dots is determined by the formation and annihilation of magnetic vortices.
