1. Non-linear tides and Gauss-Bonnet scalarization

Abstract

In linear perturbation theory, a static perturber in the vicinity of a Schwarzschild black hole (BH) enhances [suppresses] the Gauss-Bonnet (GB) curvature invariant, $\mathcal{R}_{\rm GB}$, in the high [low] tide regions. By analysing exact solutions of the vacuum Einstein field equations describing one or two BHs immersed in a multipolar gravitational field, which is locally free of pathologies, including conical singularities, we study the corresponding non-linear tides on a fiducial BH, in full General Relativity (GR). We show that the tidal field due to a far away, or close by, static BH creates high/low tides that can deviate not only quantitatively but also qualitatively from the weak field/Newtonian pattern. Remarkably, the suppression in low tide regions never makes $\mathcal{R}_{\rm GB}$ negative on the BH, even though the horizon Gaussian curvature may become negative; but $\mathcal{R}_{\rm GB}$ can vanish in a measure zero set, a feature qualitatively recovered in a Newtonian analogue model. Thus, purely gravitational, static, tidal interactions in GR, no matter how strong, cannot induce GB$^-$ scalarization. 2. Spin-induced scalarization and magnetic fields

Abstract

In the presence of certain non-minimal couplings between a scalar field and the Gauss-Bonnet curvature invariant, Kerr black holes can scalarize, as long as they are spinning fast enough. This provides a distinctive violation of the Kerr hypothesis, occurring only for some high spin range. In this paper we assess if strong magnetic fields, that may exist in the vicinity of astrophysical black holes, could facilitate this distinctive effect, by bringing down the spin threshold for scalarization. This inquiry is motivated by the fact that self-gravitating magnetic fields, by themselves, can also promote "spin-induced" scalarization. Nonetheless, we show that in the \textit{vicinity of the horizon} the effect of the magnetic field $B$ on a black hole of mass $M$, up to $BM\lesssim 1$, works \textit{against} spin-induced scalarization, requiring a larger dimensionless spin $j$ from the black hole. Abstract

The most accurate model to describe the gravitational interaction is the well-known theory of General Relativity. Several observational evidences corroborate the legitimacy of the theory compared to the older Newtonian gravity. General Relativity furthermore predicts the existence of gravitational waves, i.e. spacetime ripples produced by accelerated masses. Thanks to a connected network of interferometers called LIGO/Virgo, gravitational waves from the coalescence of massive and compact astrophysical bodies have been measured directly. These recent observations paved the way to a completely new route to test the gravitational interaction. The possibility of using gravitational waves to obtain a deeper understanding of open problems within General Relativity motivates the work developed in this thesis. Each part is essentially devoted to challenging the current model of gravitation, sometimes including yet undiscovered new matter fields, and other times modifying the theoretical framework of General Relativity. In the first part of this manuscript, I discuss the astrophysical consequences of the presence of scalar fields permeating galaxies. A detailed picture of the interaction of massive black holes and scalar dark matter structures is provided. The second part is dedicated to the analysis of the generation and propagation of gravitational waves. As an example, I examine the close limit approximation as a promising tool to investigate the collision of extreme compact objects. 4. CLAP for modified gravity: scalar instabilities in binary black hole spacetimes

Abstract

The close limit approximation of binary black hole is a powerful method to study gravitational-wave emission from highly non-linear geometries. In this work, we use it as a tool to model black hole spacetimes in theories of gravity with a new fundamental scalar degree of freedom. As an example, we consider Einstein-scalar-Gauss-Bonnet gravity, which admits as solution the Schwarzschild geometry as well as black holes with scalar hair. Accordingly, we find scalar perturbations growing unbounded around binary systems. This "dynamical scalarization" process is easier to trigger (i.e. occurs at lower values of the coupling constant of the theory) than the corresponding process for isolated black holes. Our results and framework highlight the fundamental role of the interaction during the collision of compact objects. They also emphasize the importance of having waveforms for black hole binaries in alternative theories, in order to consistently perform tests beyond General Relativity., Comment: 8 pages, 2 figures. Abstract

The ability to model the evolution of compact binaries from the inspiral to coalescence is central to gravitational wave astronomy. Current waveform catalogues are built from vacuum binary black hole models, by evolving Einstein equations numerically and complementing them with knowledge from slow-motion expansions. Much less is known about the coalescence process in the presence of matter, or in theories other than General Relativity. Here, we explore the Close Limit Approximation as a powerful tool to understand the coalescence process in general setups. In particular, we study the head-on collision of two equal-mass, compact but horizonless objects. Our results show the appearance of ``echoes'' and indicate that a significant fraction of the merger energy goes into these late-time repetitions. We also apply the Close Limit Approximation to investigate the effect of colliding black holes on surrounding scalar fields. Notably, our results indicate that observables obtained through perturbation theory may be extended to a significant segment of the merger phase, where in principle only a numerical approach is appropriate., Comment: 16 pages, 4 figures. 6. The response of ultralight dark matter to supermassive black holes and binaries

Abstract

Scalar fields can give rise to confined structures, such as boson stars or Q-balls. These objects are interesting hypothetical new "dark matter stars," but also good descriptions of dark matter haloes when the fields are ultralight. Here, we study the dynamical response of such confined bosonic structures when excited by external matter (stars, planets or black holes) in their vicinities. Such perturbers can either be plunging through the bosonic configuration or simply act as periodic sources. Our setup can also efficiently describe the interaction between a massive black hole and the surrounding environment, shortly after the massive body has undergone a "kick", due to the collapse of baryonic matter at the galactic center. It also depicts dark matter depletion as a reaction to an inspiralling binary within the halo. We calculate total energy loss, and linear and angular momenta radiated during these processes, and perform the first self-consistent calculation of dynamical friction acting on moving bodies in these backgrounds. We show that the gravitational collapse to a supermassive black hole at the center of a Newtonian boson star (NBS) is accompanied by a small change in the surrounding core. The NBS eventually gets accreted, but only on times larger than a Hubble scale for astrophysical parameters. Stellar or supermassive binaries are able to "stir" and expel scalar from the NBS. For binaries in the LIGO or LISA band, close to coalescence, scalar emission affects the waveform at leading $-6$ PN order with respect to the dominant quadrupolar term; the coefficient is too small to allow detection by next-generation interferometers. Abstract

In general relativity, Maxwell's equations are embedded in curved spacetime through the minimal prescription, but this could change if strong-gravity modifications are present. We show that with a nonminimal coupling between gravity and a massless vector field, nonperturbative effects can arise in compact stars. We find solutions describing stars with nontrivial vector field configurations, some of which are associated to an instability, while others are not. Abstract

The direct detection of gravitational waves crowns decades of efforts in the modelling of sources and of increasing detectors' sensitivity. With future third-generation Earth-based detectors or space-based observatories, gravitational-wave astronomy will be at its full bloom. Previously brushed-aside questions on environmental or other systematic effects in the generation and propagation of gravitational waves are now begging for a systematic treatment. Here, we study how electromagnetic and gravitational radiation is scattered by a binary system. Scattering cross-sections, resonances and the effect of an impinging wave on a gravitational-bound binary are worked out for the first time. The ratio between the scattered-wave amplitude and the incident wave can be of order $10^{-5}$ for known pulsars, bringing this into the realm of future gravitational-wave observatories. Abstract

The grand challenges of contemporary fundamental physics---dark matter, dark energy, vacuum energy, inflation and early universe cosmology, singularities and the hierarchy problem---all involve gravity as a key component. And of all gravitational phenomena, black holes stand out in their elegant simplicity, while harbouring some of the most remarkable predictions of General Relativity: event horizons, singularities and ergoregions. The hitherto invisible landscape of the gravitational Universe is being unveiled before our eyes: the historical direct detection of gravitational waves by the LIGO-Virgo collaboration marks the dawn of a new era of scientific exploration. Gravitational-wave astronomy will allow us to test models of black hole formation, growth and evolution, as well as models of gravitational-wave generation and propagation. It will provide evidence for event horizons and ergoregions, test the theory of General Relativity itself, and may reveal the existence of new fundamental fields. The synthesis of these results has the potential to radically reshape our understanding of the cosmos and of the laws of Nature. Abstract

The grand challenges of contemporary fundamental physics-dark matter, dark energy, vacuum energy, inflation and early universe cosmology, singularities and the hierarchy problem-all involve gravity as a key component. And of all gravitational phenomena, black holes stand out in their elegant simplicity, while harbouring some of the most remarkable predictions of General Relativity: event horizons, singularities and ergoregions. The hitherto invisible landscape of the gravitational Universe is being unveiled before our eyes: the historical direct detection of gravitational waves by the LIGO-Virgo collaboration marks the dawn of a new era of scientific exploration. Gravitational-wave astronomy will allow us to test models of black hole formation, growth and evolution, as well as models of gravitational-wave generation and propagation. It will provide evidence for event horizons and ergoregions, test the theory of General Relativity itself, and may reveal the existence of new fundamental fields. The synthesis of these results has the potential to radically reshape our understanding of the cosmos and of the laws of Nature. The purpose of this work is to present a concise, yet comprehensive overview of the state of the art in the relevant fields of research, summarize important open problems, and lay out a roadmap for future progress. This write-up is an initiative taken within the framework of the European Action on 'Black holes, Gravitational waves and Fundamental Physics'.

Abstract

The grand challenges of contemporary fundamental physics-dark matter, dark energy, vacuum energy, inflation and early universe cosmology, singularities and the hierarchy problem-all involve gravity as a key component. And of all gravitational phenomena, black holes stand out in their elegant simplicity, while harbouring some of the most remarkable predictions of General Relativity: event horizons, singularities and ergoregions. The hitherto invisible landscape of the gravitational Universe is being unveiled before our eyes: the historical direct detection of gravitational waves by the LIGO-Virgo collaboration marks the dawn of a new era of scientific exploration. Gravitational-wave astronomy will allow us to test models of black hole formation, growth and evolution, as well as models of gravitational-wave generation and propagation. It will provide evidence for event horizons and ergoregions, test the theory of General Relativity itself, and may reveal the existence of new fundamental fields. The synthesis of these results has the potential to radically reshape our understanding of the cosmos and of the laws of Nature. The purpose of this work is to present a concise, yet comprehensive overview of the state of the art in the relevant fields of research, summarize important open problems, and lay out a roadmap for future progress. This write-up is an initiative taken within the framework of the European Action on 'Black holes, Gravitational waves and Fundamental Physics'.
