Abstract

Strategies to address the decline and marginalization of rural areas are emerging as a central issue of European and national policies. Yet, the conceptualization of decline and the recognition of forms of decline specific to distinct rural areas, resulting in conditions of intra-rural divide, are fundamental aspects for developing place-based and targeted strategies. The article thus focuses on the concept of intra-rural divide. It introduces the categories of declining, adapting, stabilizing, and developing regions as spatial clusters that present specific population trends and require specific place-based policies. These policies are defined as adaptation, mitigation, and development strategies. The aim of the study is to develop a procedure, based on a set of indicators of population trends and population structure, to investigate the impact of active decline resulting from out-migration and legacy decline resulting from demographic imbalances produced by past migration. The objective is to understand the intra-rural divide and identify clusters of declining transition and prosperous rural areas. Six Italian regions were selected as study areas, including Abruzzo, Basilicata, Calabria, Campania, Molise, and Puglia. The Municipalities are selected as the unit of analysis. The global trend towards the growth of urban population poses the issue of the public space influence on outdoor practices of different subjects. Urban public space is the carrier of an ever-increasing number and density of users. Walking, both as a form of transportation and as a vector to physical activity and social interactions, emerges as a fundamental category of behaviour. The proposed research develops a theoretical and methodological framework for assessing walkability of the urban space. Building on concepts of capability and affordance, walkability is herein conceptualized in terms of the effect of affordances incorporated into the built environment on individuals' propensity to walk for different purposes. Abstract

Starting from the Late Republican and First Imperial ages, the Roman Mediterranean has seen the development and transformation of urbanised areas due to the newly gained stability conferred by the so-called Pax Augusta. This phenomenon has significant consequences in transforming pre-existing urban structures and establishing a large number of newly founded urban areas. This study aims to address a gap in the existing literature by developing a method to analyse the configuration of historical urban sites to understand the social and cultural antecedents of the transformation and development of urban areas in the Roman era. The study builds on Space Syntax theories and techniques to develop an analytical protocol that combines syntactical analysis and statistical analysis to measure and compare spatial, visual and social relationships in four urban Roman sites in the Mediterranean. The selected areas of study are the urban sites of Nora and Cosa in Italy, of Timgad in Algeria and of Thuburbo Maius in Tunisia. The study areas include planned urban sites constituted by a grid structure (Cosa and Timgad) and cities with continuity of life (Nora and Thuburbo Maius) formed by an organic inspired spatial layout. 50. Design, Synthesis and Study of Novel Glycoconjugate Organometallic Complexes as Potential Anticancer Agents

Abstract

An important application of coordination chemistry consists in the design of metal complexes with anti-tumor activity. The advantage of this methodology lies in the control of the properties of the compounds, through the wide choice of the metal, its oxidation state, the number of coordination and the relative geometry. Within this frame, the present PhD thesis proposed the design of new organometallic complexes containing carbohydrate-derived ligands. The presence of a sugar fragment can have several beneficial effects on the resulting species, by enhancing the biocompatibility, water solubility and selectivity (Warburg Effect). Platinum anticancer drugs are regularly used in clinical therapy, despite the serious issues related to their administration. Therefore, in recent years several efforts were performed for searching valid alternative metallodrugs. In the first part of the PhD, organometallic platinum complexes were studied, by exploring different oxidation states, molecular geometries, and type of glycoconjugate ligands. Particular attention was given to coordinatively saturated Pt(II), by far less represented than square planar Pt(II), and octahedral Pt(IV) species. The synthesis, the structural characterization, and the study of the reactivity in miming-biological conditions were performed, followed by preliminary investigations of the in vitro cytotoxicity and of the mechanism of action. The results allowed to individuate key structural features that influenced the anticancer properties of the designed compounds. The last part of the PhD activity was carried out at the École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL, Switzerland) under the supervision of Prof. Paul Dyson. In this frame, glycoconjugation was extended to ruthenium and gold organometallic scaffolds, considered valid alternative to more represented platinum ones.
