In the convulsive Muromachi period, a double phenomenon of permanence and change occurs in the culture of Japan. The ancestral cult of nature, the search for beauty and harmony, is superimposed on austerity, simplicity and awareness of the impermanence of things that results in a dark state of mind, a renunciation of color and a "separation" or refuge in the arts as "paths of peace" (painting, architecture, gardening, tea ceremony, crafts, Nō theater, poetry), in the face of a society in permanent conflict, obtaining, in apparent contradiction, an enormous development, however parallel to the "arts of war" (iaidō, kyudō, kendō...); both paths that, surprisingly, the latter converted into paths of peace, subsist and are practiced today, thus demonstrating universal values., En el convulso período Muromachi se produce en la cultura de Japón un doble fenómeno de permanencia y de cambio. Al ancestral el culto a la naturaleza, búsqueda de la belleza y armonía, se superpone la austeridad, simplicidad y consciencia de la impermanencia de las cosas que repercute en un oscuro estado de ánimo, una renuncia al color y un “apartamiento” o refugio en las artes como “caminos de paz”, (pintura, arquitectura, jardinería, ceremonia del té, artesanía, teatro Nō, poesía), frente a una sociedad en permanente conflicto, obteniendo, en aparente contradicción, un enorme desarrollo, no obstante paralelo a las “artes de la guerra”(iaidō, kyudō, kendō…); caminos ambos que, sorprendentemente, estos últimos convertidos en caminos de paz, subsisten y se practican hoy en día, demostrando así valores universales.

We present an oceanographic research fiberglass reinforced polyester vessel of medium size (19.5 m length x 5.4 m beam) and plug-in hybrid propulsion complemented by a power generation system based on solar panels with polycrystalline cells connected to a charger and two wind turbines connected to their control systems. The objective of the present text is, beyond the intuition of the beauty present in the ceremony of the traditional Japanese archery (kyūdō), to reflect on the different pathways of study of this art, taking as a starting point notions of Western aesthetics and a possible common grounds with Oriental aesthetics., El presente texto pretende, más allá de la intuición de la belleza de la ceremonia del tiro con arco tradicional japonés, (kyūdō), reflexionar sobre las vías de estudio de este arte a partir de las nociones de la estética occidental y un posible ámbito común con la estética oriental.

New monitoring technologies are being progressively implemented in open-ocean and coastal observatories. The Mediterranean Sea is a well-known, reduced-scale ocean, an ideal natural laboratory to study global ocean processes, in particular those associated with meso- and submesoscale variability, interactions with mean flows and associated ecosystem response. SOCIB, the Balearic Islands Coastal Ocean Observing and Forecasting System, is one of such observatories, a multiplatform distributed and integrated system, a facility of facilities that extends from the nearshore to the open sea. SOCIB profits from the strategic position of the Balearic Islands at the Atlantic/Mediterranean transition area, one of the “hot spots” of biodiversity in the world’s oceans, and also of societal needs in islands where preservation of the environment is essential to assure both residents’ welfare and the competitiveness of the tourist sector. SOCIB is unique in that, from peer-reviewed excellence, its mission and objectives are science-, technology-, and society-driven. These types of new marine infrastructures, because of their critical mass and sustained funding, are presently establishing new ways of international cooperation, leading to major science breakthroughs, innovations in oceanographic instrumentation, and new ways of more efficient and science-based coastal and ocean management. We describe the major elements and structure of SOCIB and present some recent scientific, technological, and society-related results that are of relevance at a global ocean scale.
