The influence of intraspecific trait variation on species interactions makes trait-based approaches critical to understanding eco-evolutionary processes. Because species occupy habitats that are patchily distributed in space, species interactions are influenced not just by the degree of intraspecific trait variation but also the relative proportion of trait variation that occurs within- versus between-patches. Advancement in trait-based ecology hinges on understanding how trait variation is distributed within and between habitat patches across the landscape. We sampled larval spotted salamanders (Ambystoma maculatum) across six spatially discrete ponds to quantify within- and between-pond variation in mass, length, and various metrics associated with their relationship (scaling, body condition, shape). Across all traits, within-pond variation contributed more to total observed morphological variation than between-pond variation. Between-pond variation was not negligible, however, and explained 20-41% of total observed variation in measured traits. Between-pond variation was more pronounced in salamander tail morphology compared to head or body morphology, suggesting that pond-level factors more strongly influence tails than other body parts. We also observed differences in mass-length relationships across ponds, both in terms of scaling slopes and intercepts, though differences in the intercepts were much stronger. Preliminary evidence hinted that newly constructed ponds were a driver of the observed differences in mass-length relationships and morphometrics. General pond-level difference in salamander trait covariation suggest that allometric scaling of morphological traits is context dependent in patchy landscapes. Effects of pond age offer the hypothesis that habitat restoration through pond construction is a driver of variation in trait scaling, which managers may leverage to bolster trait diversity.

Abstract The carbon stock, biomass, and CO2 emissions in woody species play crucial roles in understanding and managing ecosystems. Understanding these aspects is crucial for sustainable forest management, conservation, and mitigating the impact of woody species on global carbon dynamics and climate change. This study examined the nexus between carbon stock, biomass, and CO2 emission of woody plant composition in disturbed and undisturbed areas in Southwestern Nigeria. The study involved the random establishment of plots in the disturbed and undisturbed areas and, in each plot, the woody plants were enumerated and identified to the species level. The results showed that total biomass (102.645 Mg ha-1), total carbon stock (51.323 Mg C ha-1), and total CO2 emission (188.354 Mg C ha-1) values of tree species in undisturbed plots were higher than the values of total biomass (70.768 Mg ha-1), total carbon stock (35.384 Mg C ha-1), and total CO2 emission (129.859 Mg C ha-1) recorded in disturbed plots. The results also revealed that total biomass (0.123 Mg ha-1), total carbon stock (0.061 Mg C ha-1), and total CO2 emission (0.225 Mg C ha-1 ) values of shrub species recorded in disturbed plots were higher than values of total biomass (0.067 Mg ha-1), total carbon stock (0.034 Mg C ha-1) and total CO2 content (0.124 Mg C ha-1) recorded in undisturbed plots, respectively. The findings showed that in undisturbed and disturbed plots of shrubs, biomass, carbon and CO2 emissions have a strong positive correlation of 1.000**. While biomass, carbon, and CO2 emission have a very strong positive correlation (0.999**) in undisturbed plots of trees, the biomass, carbon, and CO2 emission have moderate to strong positive correlations (0.458** to 0.974**) in disturbed plots of the tree. The study concluded that while biomass, carbon stock, and CO2 emission values of tree species were higher in undisturbed plots than in disturbed plots, the biomass, carbon stock, and CO2 emission values of shrub species were lower in undisturbed plots than in disturbed plots. It also concluded that the main purpose of establishing reserve forests is not totally achieved as human activities occurring in reserve forests still contribute to the increment of climate change.

Abstract People with end‐stage kidney disease (ESKD) often exhibit impaired cardiac structure and function, which may contribute to poor exercise capacity. This study used multimodal exercise testing to investigate the central and peripheral mechanisms of exercise limitation in adults with ESKD, also comparing in‐centre hemodialysis (ICHD) to home hemodialysis (HHD). Seventeen adults (55.5 ± 14.5 years; n = 14 male; n = 12 HHD) participated. Resting cardiac examinations, followed by submaximal cycling cardiopulmonary exercise testing (CPET) and functional exercise testing, revealed cardiac structural abnormalities (increased left ventricular mass) and cardiac injury. Aerobic fitness in adults with ESKD was low, with pulmonary oxygen uptake (V̇O2) at the gas exchange threshold (GET) occuring at 39 ± 8% predicted V̇O2peak. O2 pulse, an estimate of stroke volume (SV), was higher in HHD at rest (p = 0.05, ES = 0.58) and during unloaded cycling (p = 0.05, ES = 0.58) compared to ICHD. However, thoracic bioreactance derived SV at the GET was significantly higher in adults receiving ICHD versus HHD (p = 0.01, ES = 0.74). In adults with ESKD, cardiac output was positively associated with V̇O2 at the GET (r = 0.61, p = 0.04). This study highlights prevalent exercise dysfunction in adults with ESKD undergoing dialysis, with potential distinct differences between in‐centre and home hemodialysis, mechanistically linked to underlying cardiac abnormalities.

Purpose: The growing adverse effects of agrochemicals on environmental health and safety warrant an examination of ecologically safe alternatives for weed control. The objective of this study was to determine the effect of rice-husk waste on the growth performance and weed management (WM) of Ocimum sanctum. Method: In a randomized complete block design with three replications, nine weed management (WM) methods were assessed. These methods included black, red, and transparent polyethylene mulches; rice-husk; sawdust; hoe-weeding at 30 days after transplanting (DAT); a one-time application of 0.2 kg/ha Haloxyfop-P at 30 DAT; daily weeding; and no-weeding. Data were collected on weed parameters and growth attributes of Ocimum sanctum. All data were subjected to analysis of variance. Results: The use of rice-husk mulch resulted in the most significant (pDaily-weeding>Hoe-weeded>Rice-husk>Haloxyfop-PEHS>Red-polyethylene>Sawdust> Transparent-polyethylene>Control in WCE at 10 WAT. Conclusion: The study revealed that rice-husk mulch was the most effective in enhancing the growth and yield attributes of Ocimum sanctum, ranking fourth in weed control efficiency (WCE) at 72.60%, following black polyethylene (BP) mulch (100%), daily-weeding (96%) and hoe-weeded (95.7%). Highlights · The study revealed that black polyethylene mulch exhibited the highest weed control efficiency exceeding 90%, and recorded complete weed suppression (11%) at 10 weeks after application. · Higher weed species diversity was observed in plots subjected to hoe-weeded, rice husk mulched, and post-emergence herbicide treatments, suggesting that weed management techniques can influence the composition of weed flora. · Mulching with rice-husk significantly improved several growth parameters of Ocimum sanctum, including leaf number, number of branches, plant height, stem girth, canopy diameter, and leaf yield,when compared to other weed control methods. · Organic waste recycling practices such as use of rice-husk as mulch offer an effective, sustainable, eco-friendly, and cost-effective option for weed management in crop fields. · Medicinal herbs like Ocimum sanctum can be cultivated effectively using rice-husk mulch which provides advantages such as soil moisture retention, weed suppression, and improved growth performance.

Abstract This study identifies fungi associated with Euwallacea fornicatus and determines whether these fungal species play the role of primary symbiont. E. fornicatus adults that emerged from the branches of infested trees in Okinawa main island, Japan, were collected and used to isolate fungi. Fusarium kuroshium and Penicillium citrinum were the most dominant fungal associates of females and males, respectively. F. kuroshium was much more frequently isolated from the head, including mycangia (fungus-carrying organs), of females than any other body parts. We inoculated healthy mango saplings with F. kuroshium or F. decemcellulare, both of which were symbionts of E. fornicatus females infesting mango trees. F. kuroshium decreased leaf stomatal conductance and rate of xylem sap-conduction area and increased length and area of xylem discoloration of the saplings, thereby weakening and killing some. These results suggest that F. kuroshium, a mycangial fungus of E. fornicatus, inhibits water flow in mango trees. This study is the first to report that F. kuroshium causes wilt disease in mango trees and that it is a primary fungal symbiont of E. fornicatus.

Abstract Background Virulence determinants are crucial to the risk assessment of pathogens in an environment. This study investigated the presence of eleven key virulence-associated genes in Vibrio cholerae (n = 111) and Vibrio mimicus (n = 22) and eight virulence determinants in Vibrio alginolyticus (n = 65) and Vibrio parahaemolyticus (n = 17) isolated from six important water resources in Eastern Cape, South Africa, using PCR techniques. The multiple virulence gene indexes (MVGI) for sampling sites and isolates as well as hotspots for potential vibriosis outbreaks among sampling sites were determined statistically based on the comparison of MVGI. Result The PCR assay showed that all the V. cholerae isolates belong to non-O1/non-O139 serogroups. Of the isolates, Vibrio Cholera (84%), V. mimicus (73%), V. alginolyticus (91%) and V. parahaemolyticus (100%) isolates harboured at least one of the virulence-associated genes investigated. The virulence gene combinations detected in isolates varied at sampling site and across sites. Typical virulence-associated determinants of V. cholerae were detected in V. mimicus while that of V. parahaemolyticus were detected in V. alginolyticus. The isolates with the highest MVGI were recovered from three estuaries (Sunday river, Swartkopps river, buffalo river) and a freshwater resource (Lashinton river). The cumulative MVGI for V. cholerae, V. mimicus, V. alginolyticus and V. parahaemolyticus isolates were 0.34, 0.20, 0.45, and 0.40 respectively. The targeted Vibrio spp. in increasing order of the public health risk posed in our study areas based on the MVGI is V. alginolyticus > V. parahaemolyticus > V. cholerae > V. mimicus. Five (sites SR, PA5, PA6, EL4 and EL6) out of the seventeen sampling sites were detected as the hotspots for potential cholera-like infection and vibriosis outbreaks. Conclusions Our findings suggest that humans having contact with water resources in our study areas are exposed to potential public health risks owing to the detection of virulent determinants in human pathogenic Vibrio spp. recovered from the water resources. The study affirms the relevancy of environmental Vibrio species to the epidemiology of vibriosis, cholera and cholera-like infections. Hence we suggest a monitoring program for human pathogenic Vibrio spp. in the environment most especially surface water that humans have contact with regularly.

Abstract The proliferation of antibiotic-resistant bacteria and antimicrobial resistance is a pressing public health challenge because of their possible transfer to humans via contact with polluted water sources. In this study, three freshwater resources were assessed for important physicochemical characteristics as well as heterotrophic and coliform bacteria and as potential reservoirs for extended-spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL) strains. The physicochemical characteristics ranged from 7.0 to 8.3; 25 to 30 °C, 0.4 to 93 mg/L, 0.53 to 8.80 mg/L and 53 to 240 mg/L for pH, temperature, dissolved oxygen (DO), biological oxygen demand (BOD5) and total dissolved solids, respectively. The physicochemical characteristics mostly align with guidelines except for the DO and BOD5 in some instances. Seventy-six (76) Aeromonas hydrophila and 65 Escherichia coli O157: H7 isolates were identified by preliminary biochemical analysis and PCR from the three sites. Among these, A. hydrophila displayed higher frequencies of antimicrobial resistance, with all 76 (100%) isolates completely resistant to cefuroxime and cefotaxime and with MARI ≥ 0.61. The test isolates showed more than 80% resistance against five of the ten test antimicrobials, with resistance against cefixime, a cephalosporin antibiotic being the highest at 95% (134/141). The frequency of the detection of the resistance genes in the A. hydrophila isolates generally ranged between 0% (bla SHV) and 26.3% (bla CTX-M), while the frequency of detection among the E. coli O157:H7 isolates ranged between 4.6% (bla CTX-M) and 58.4% (bla TEM). Our findings indicate that the distribution of antibiotic-resistant bacteria with diverse ESBL-producing capabilities and virulence genes in freshwater sources potentially threatens public health and the environment.

Abstract A smart artificial intelligent system (SAIS) for Acinetobacter density (AD) enumeration in waterbodies represents an invaluable strategy for avoidance of repetitive, laborious, and time-consuming routines associated with its determination. This study aimed to predict AD in waterbodies using machine learning (ML). AD and physicochemical variables (PVs) data from three rivers monitored via standard protocols in a year-long study were fitted to 18 ML algorithms. The models’ performance was assayed using regression metrics. The average pH, EC, TDS, salinity, temperature, TSS, TBS, DO, BOD, and AD was 7.76 ± 0.02, 218.66 ± 4.76 µS/cm, 110.53 ± 2.36 mg/L, 0.10 ± 0.00 PSU, 17.29 ± 0.21 °C, 80.17 ± 5.09 mg/L, 87.51 ± 5.41 NTU, 8.82 ± 0.04 mg/L, 4.00 ± 0.10 mg/L, and 3.19 ± 0.03 log CFU/100 mL respectively. While the contributions of PVs differed in values, AD predicted value by XGB [3.1792 (1.1040–4.5828)] and Cubist [3.1736 (1.1012–4.5300)] outshined other algorithms. Also, XGB (MSE = 0.0059, RMSE = 0.0770; R2 = 0.9912; MAD = 0.0440) and Cubist (MSE = 0.0117, RMSE = 0.1081, R2 = 0.9827; MAD = 0.0437) ranked first and second respectively, in predicting AD. Temperature was the most important feature in predicting AD and ranked first by 10/18 ML-algorithms accounting for 43.00–83.30% mean dropout RMSE loss after 1000 permutations. The two models' partial dependence and residual diagnostics sensitivity revealed their efficient AD prognosticating accuracies in waterbodies. In conclusion, a fully developed XGB/Cubist/XGB-Cubist ensemble/web SAIS app for AD monitoring in waterbodies could be deployed to shorten turnaround time in deciding microbiological quality of waterbodies for irrigation and other purposes.

Category: Other Introduction/Purpose: The purpose of this study is to compare rates of recurrent toe-walking following operative intervention between idiopathic toe walkers and toe walkers with associated sensory processing/autism spectrum disorders. Methods: An IRB-approved retrospective review of patients at a single pediatric institution who underwent surgical treatment for toe-walking over a 12-year period was conducted. Children with peripheral or central neurologic disorders, muscle disorders, congenital foot/extremity deformities, prior ankle/foot surgery, and those not managed with an isolated triceps surae procedure were excluded. The remaining patients were divided into those with idiopathic toe-walking (ITW Group) and those with toe- walking associated with sensory processing/autism spectrum disorders (SPD Group). Recurrence of toe walking and need for additional surgery for recurrence were compared between cohorts. Recurrence rates and subsequent operations were assessed for each group. Multivariate regression and Fischer exact test were used to evaluate differences in group characteristics. Results: 106 patients met inclusion criteria. 29 patients (27%) had an associated sensory processing disorder, the remaining 77 patients comprised the ITW group. There were no differences between groups in length of follow-up (p=0.08) or type of initial surgery performed (p=0.48). The SPD group contained a significantly greater percentage of males (75% vs 56%, p=0.01) and were younger at the age of index surgery (8.5 vs 10 years, p=0.03). At an average follow-up time of 1.2 years, 11 patients (10%) developed clinical recurrence, of whom, 4 underwent a subsequent intervention. The SPD group had significantly higher rates of recurrence than idiopathic toe walkers (24% vs 5%, p=0.009). Multivariate regression analysis demonstrated that an underlying sensory processing disorder was an independent predictor of recurrence (p=0.018, OR=7.5). Conclusion: Clinical recurrence following the surgical treatment of toe-walking is over seven times greater in children with autism spectrum and/or other sensory processing disorders than idiopathic counterparts.
